eing healthy and fit is not a fad or a trend, it is a lifestyle. Health is arguably the cornerstone of a balanced life – without it, you will not be able to live your full potential in any area. In this guide, we share informative tips and useful pieces of advice for you to achieve a happier, healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle. Bahrain Confidential’s Health and Wellnesss Guide that will help you meet your personal goals and improve the quality of your life. We’ve got you covered!

Health

“Live in rooms full of light. Avoid heavy food. Be moderate in the drinking of wine. Take massage, baths, exercise, and gymnastics. Fight insomnia with gentle rocking or the sound of running water. Change surroundings and take long journeys. Strictly avoid frightening ideas. Indulge in cheerful conversation and amusements. Listen to music.

Health

Body, Mind & Soul Eat Well. Drink Well. Be Well. Contrary to popular belief, eating healthy is not only about dieting, eating less or depriving yourself of the foods you love. It is a case of eating more of what your body needs and less of what it doesn’t. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, cook meals at home and reduce your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates – these will improve your mood and lower your risk for health issues. Staying hydrated is also vital! Water helps flush your systems of waste products and toxins. Every cell,

16 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

tissue and organ in your body needs water to work properly. While it’s true a tall glass of water is the best known way to stay hydrated, there are plenty of alternative options (watermelon, celery, cucumbers, etc.) if you don’t like the taste of tap or couldn’t be bothered with bottled water.

Health Get moving! Being active has numerous health benefits, both physically and mentally. There are many types of physical activities including swimming, running, jogging, walking and dancing! Regardless of what you do, regular exercise and physical activity help pave the way towards a healthier and happier lifestyle, no matter the age. A recently-published study has provided strong evidence that regular exercise is very beneficial for the health and functioning of the brain in the over 50s.

“The part can never be well unless the whole is well. - Plato Disconnect

Stay positive

Technology has great benefits however; it is obvious that everyone is developing an unhealthy attachment to it. Find time to unplug and disconnect from your devices and the social world. Researchers found out that powering-down helps remove unhealthy feelings of jealousy, envy, and loneliness. Set aside protected time of each day for direct interaction with people or for solitude and meditation.

Train your mind to see the good in everything. Be the energy you want to attract. Optimism is linked to decreased feelings of loneliness and increased pain tolerance.

Treat yourself Indulgence isn’t always a terrible thing. Chronic stress, even just from your daily life can cause health problems like heart disease, depression and other disorders. Make it a habit of combating stress by unplugging and taking a few moments to breathe. Do something for you! It can be a relaxing spa session, makeover or even some DIY treatments at home. These small indulgences can have multiple benefits like the release of happy chemicals, improvement of productivity, lower stress levels and better self-esteem.

Barefoot Breakthrough... What you need to take your fitness one step further.

H

ave you ever felt a bit uncomfortable in your shoes while training? Even if you know you bought the right size and the most comfortable pair of shoes you could find in the market? Well, that’s probably your body trying to tell you something.

Since the birth of the human race, people have been walking around and living their lives with their bare feet. Our feet were made to touch the surfaces around us, they were not created to be confined in a tight environment or locked in a shoe that disconnects them from their surroundings. Keeping your feet always covered or cushioned in shoes, sandals, or slippers weakens your foot’s senses, and hinders your body’s ability to have the nervous reactions that naturally occur from the movements in your feet. It also weakens the muscles in the bottom of your foot, as your foot becomes dependent on the

18 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

environment created by your shoes – the cushioning in the heel of the shoe and the boundaries in the insole where the foot is limited to move. By allowing your feet to be free while you move or train – you are permitting your body to reach its maximum potential by using its natural stabilizers in the feet, which will give you more balance, and naturally improve your form, improve your flexibility, and as a result help you improve your muscle activation. If you have certain postural misalignments or any physical conditions, you’d need to consult with your doctor before changing your footwear. Also, if you’ve been wearing shoes with support for so many years, you might need to start with replacing these shoes with others that have less support, especially in the heel, until you can gradually train barefoot. You can also consider starting to apply this

with sports that have less impact in the beginning such as weight training and slowly progress towards more intense exercise such as plyometric training after developing more balance, stability, and muscle strength over time. From a personal experience with myself and with my clients, I recommend barefoot training but suggest that you do it gradually and wisely to result in happier feet and a stronger body. Believe me, once you go barefoot, you’ll never want to train any other way! ith all the hustle and bustle that our daily lives bring, it takes a toll on our mind, body, and soul. Spa InterContinental is the perfect sanctuary, a respite away from the crazy world where you can gather your thoughts and relax. Just recently, the spa has opened two new massage rooms that offers an oasis of tranquility. As soon as we opened the door to the spa, we felt a sigh of relief. With an abundance of treatments to choose from, Spa Manager Lolita Sarengo guided us on

24 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

what would be the best one to try. After all, a relaxing day wouldn’t be complete without a blissful pampering session in one of Bahrain’s best spas. Upon a few minutes of consultation, Lolita suggested that we try their Bruno Vassari Senses Candle Massage. While waiting for our massage therapist, we were offered refreshing cucumber and lemon water. Soon after,

two lovely ladies named Juanita and Lida escorted us to our respective rooms and we knew that it was all about pampering from that moment on. The thought of melted candle wax on your body may not seem inviting and may not strike you immediately. I was a little

Feature hesitant at first because I was not sure what to expect but trust us now when we say that it is one of the best ways to relax! Candle massage is a relaxing massage using candles that melt into massage oil after it has been lit up. The heat aids muscle relaxation, while the smooth massage melted away not only physical tension but also my internal stress as well. My therapist, Lida, noticed the tightness in my shoulders, caused by slouching over my computer in concentration, and eased the knots out expertly, and I loved the thick, buttery oil that left my skin feeling richly moisturised. The process intrigued, surprised and overwhelmed our senses with a unique scent along with a warm and silky touch.

Within moments, the warmly-blended oils transformed our skin to a glowing smoothness! It was truly a unique sensory experience. The Bruno Vassari Senses candle massage is a candle that changes into a soft massage oil with a high moisturising effect when heated. It has three different scents: Fleur d’Ambre, Jasmine and Monoi. The Fleur d’Ambre, has a sweet aroma and is very soothing. It gives a stimulating fragrance that will help you obtain calmness. It is broadly used in beauty treatments, because the juice of their mature seeds have positive properties for skin and hair. The jasmine oil is known for improving mood, overcoming stress and balancing hormones. Lastly, the Monoi massage candle contains an exotic and delicate perfume, that transmits its calming, toning and smoothing properties. According to Lolita, “the massage candles have healing and soothing properties while the aroma uplifts the mood, making one feel very content and calm”. At

Aside from the candle massage, Spa Intercontinental is offering a wide array

of Bruno Vassari treatments including Anti-Cellulite & Firming Treatment, Body Firming Treatment, Full Body Scrub and several personalized packages perfectly tailored to your liking. Feeling serene and silky-soft, we headed out to check the fitness centre and swimming pool. We stepped out into a dazzling bright but crisp sunshine and basked into its loveliness. cleanings and exams. This is one of the most effective ways to detect the early signs of gum disease.

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum and other diseases

There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Other research show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive

gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

How to prevent it?

Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Ask HV Holistic... Charlie Answers: I would like to start by commending you for looking for a long-term way to change your life, rather than a ’quick fix’. You’re already on the right track. Maintaining motivation can be exceptionally hard, so here’s a few of my top tips. l Set yourself achievable and progressive targets, to measure your success. l Stick notes around your house, fridge, desk, mobile phone, car and anywhere that will keep you on track. Write down ‘WHY’ you want to keep going. What are you working out for? Remind yourself of why you started, and it will be easier to remember to keep going. lWorkout, walk, run, swim or make energetic love first thing in the morning. Statistically, you’re more likely to put off working out the later in the day that you leave it. It’ll also motivate you to eat well throughout the day, get your endorphins buzzing, and improve your productivity during the day. l If you really can’t workout first thing in the day, schedule your workouts in your diary as a priority to your day. Make your fitness as much a part of your daily routine

28 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

as brushing your teeth. It really is that important. l Plan your meals, track your calories and only deviate from the plan once a week. It’s easy to let cheat meals turn into cheat days, which often turn into weeks, and weeks into months. Before you know it, you’re nearing the end of the year, and convincing yourself that you’ll really do better next year. We all know that the definition of madness is repeating the same action and expecting a different result… l Don’t underestimate the benefit of investing in new clothing, equipment, music, headphones, motivational apps, books – anything that fills you with enthusiasm for maintaining momentum is good. Find a new gym, an online coach or a sports club. Get involved with healthy hobbies, rather than falling from one social event to the next. l Limit your time on social media or watching TV for example. It’s easy to lose several hours a week being completely unproductive. Try and see working out as your new ‘down time’. You’ll feel better for it, both mentally and physically.

I really want to commit to a healthier lifestyle but, I’ve tried in the past and haven’t been able to stick at it for more than a few weeks. What is your best advice for helping me make changes to my body over the long term?

l Set your phone screen saver to a positive motivational picture. No one wants to see a bad picture of themselves every time they pick up their phone, but if you have a goal physique in mind, seeing this image on repeat will prompt you to persevere. l Make yourself accountable to another person. A trainer, a friend, your family – whatever works for you. Not all of the points above will resonate, but pick two or three and commit to those. Reward yourself when you do well, and don’t lose hope if you have bad days. There is no shame in trying to better yourself, so never, ever give up. n

Men The focus on reinventing classics continues in menswear, taking a fresh and casual approach. The nod to architecture is referenced in the collection’s industrial palette of slate blue, charcoal grey, midnight green and cream. The tones are offset by a strong presence of red, inspired by the Italian architecture studio Pedevilla’s use of red pigmented concrete at a Tyrolean fire station. Outfits are styled together with tonal colour blocking and dark shades that create undefined border lines.

Women The influence of tailoring is evident in the collection; garments are reimagined with a modern twist. Taking its inspiration from the lines of architecture and industrial references, the collection experiments with the proportion of silhouettes and details – featuring exaggerated lapels, cuffs and vents, sharp pleats inspired by press folds and the use of geometric shapes. Accessories are also inventive and forward-thinking. Available all season at City Centre Bahrain.

Performance Driven Porsche launches third generation of the Cayenne.

P

orsche is introducing the third generation of the brand’s successful SUV. A completely new development from the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer, the Cayenne combines typical Porsche performance with excellent everyday practicality. Powerful turbo engines, a new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox and new chassis systems, alongside innovative display and control concept with increased connectivity take both sportiness and comfort to a next level. At market launch, there are two newly developed six-cylinder engines to choose from: The Cayenne’s 340 hp (250-kW), three-litre turbo engine delivers 40 hp (29 kW) more than the previous model. The 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine in the Cayenne S, which reaches speeds of up to 265 km/h, brings it up to 440 hp (324 kW) – an increase of 20

34 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

hp (15 kW). Equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the new Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. Based on the iconic 911 sports car, the brand’s SUV has been enhanced visually and features mixed tyres, as well as rearaxle steering for the first time. On-road capabilities of the model are also further improved thanks to active all-wheel drive as standard, Porsche 4D Chassis Control, three-chamber air suspension and the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) electronic roll stabilisation system. Despite its significantly extended range of standard equipment, the Cayenne S weighs up to 65 kilograms less than its predecessor and remains perfectly suited to off-road use.

Dynamic design language:

firmer design and larger wheels The appearance of the Cayenne has been further enhanced in line with the Porsche Design DNA. The enlarged air intakes at the front are clear indicators of the increased performance. Meanwhile, the new horizontal light edges result in the SUV appearing wider and more athletic, even when stationary. The luggage compartment volume has been increased by 100 litres and now offers 770 litres capacity. The wheels are one inch larger in diameter, with wider tyres on the rear axle for the first time, emphasising the improved driving dynamics.

Faster on the road, even more impressive on rough terrain The Cayenne’s expanded range of

Car Review improved performance and comfort, is due in no small part to the new eight-speed Tiptronic S gearbox. Shorter response times and sportier ratios in the lower gears enhance both on-road performance and off-road capability. At the other end of the spectrum, the long-transmission eighth gear ensures low torques, optimised fuel consumption and relaxed driving.

New developments: rear-axle steering, air suspension, roll stabilisation Providing the optimal basis for the active chassis systems, which are analysed and synchronised is the integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control system. The system works in real time, optimising handling even further. For the first time, the Cayenne is available with electric rear-axle steering – a system tried and tested both in the 911 and the Panamera – improving agility on bends and stability when changing lanes at high speeds. The reduced turning circle also makes every day handling of the SUV easier.

New Sport Chrono Package with PSM Sport The new Cayenne offers even more potential when it comes to sporty performance. Porsche has redeveloped the Sport Chrono Package based on the model of the sports car, with the Mode button on the steering wheel, a clear indicator of this approach. As well as the Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, the driver can select an individually configurable mode.

Reduced weight means lower fuel consumption and even more driving pleasure Sports cars need a lightweight construction, so similarly to the 911 and the Panamera, the new body of the Cayenne also uses an intelligent combination of alloy and steel.

Digital evolution: Porsche Advanced Cockpit and new PCM With this new generation, the Cayenne is writing the next chapter in the relationship between driver and vehicle. The Porsche Advanced Cockpit is fully integrated into the sporty, luxurious atmosphere. At the heart of the new display and control concept is a 12.3-inch full-HD touchscreen from the latest generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM), launched last year with the new Panamera. A range of digital functions can be operated intuitively – including by voice control.

Your personal Cayenne – more customisation, more online services The new PCM introduces an enhanced

The adaptive air suspension (standard in the Cayenne S) with new three-chamber technology significantly increases the spread between a sporty, firm connection and the driving comfort expected of a touring car. Just as before, the system enables adjustments to the ground clearance on rough terrain. With the optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation, sporty drivers benefit by changing from a hydraulic to an electric system.

level of interaction. Alongside the start screen and main menu being adjustable to the driver’s needs, up to six individual profiles can also be configured. As well as a large number of interior settings, a preference data is stored on specifications for lights, driving programmes and assistance systems. Is it the way it looks?

A

udi claimed that the latest models are a significant improvement on the previous generation. The Q5 is by far, and away, one of Audi’s most successful models other than the A4. The Ingolstadtbased carmaker has built a $1.3 billion factory at San Jose Chiapa, Mexico to produce the new generation of the Audi Q5. “The first Audi Q5 was for many years the world’s best-selling SUV in its class. It was no easy task to design its successor, but

36 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

that is precisely why it is so very exciting,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management at AUDI AG.

Evolution, not revolution. Audi tell us that they have kept to the DNA of the previous model. Many people won’t notice the differences from its predecessor just by looking at it. The Q5 retains its handsome stance and elegant proportions drawing inspiration from its low-slung siblings the A4 and A5. With the new Q5, Audi set the bar a notch higher.

Bahrain Confidential went to Oman to test drive the new Audi Q5 and SQ5. Among the great innovations are the quattro drive system with ultra technology, highly efficient engines, the air suspension with damper control, and a comprehensive line-up of infotainment and assistance systems. The weight was also reduced – depending on the engine – by up to 90 kg over the preceding 1st-generation Audi Q5. Typical with German cars, they evolve over time so there’s not a revolutionary change in its appearance.

Car Review Spacious and versatile The all new Q5 has a new grille, a wider front and bigger wheel arches. Inside, there’s a new dashboard which is flatter and wider. The interior offers a lot of space for 5 persons, and it surpasses the previous model in key dimensions. Audi takes a lot of pride in the new and improved ergonomic design which helps to make driving a much more comfortable experience.

Audi takes a lot of pride in the new and improved ergonomic design which helps to make driving a much more comfortable experience.

Inside the car, it has a phone box for wireless phone charging and has an iPhone friendly interface. Apple will decide which app it shows – for example it won’t show Facebook or YouTube for obvious reasons (and if I need to spell it out, it would be dangerous if you’re driving with those sorts of apps). There’s a lot of storage space in the cabin; you can get a litre bottle of water in the door compartment which is unusual. Also,

the cup holder can heat coffee and cool water which is a nice touch.

Can it handle off-road? The new Audi Q5 combines the sportiness of an Audi sedan with a versatile character and a highly variable interior. Driving all four wheels is a 252-hp turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a seven-speed automatic. Audi is touting the new model as a vehicle that has the “sporty

characteristics of a sedan with the offroad capabilities of an SUV.” We drove off-road in it but it is really designed for normal driving conditions. However, if you want to drive off-road, it can handle the business – we took it out on some pretty rough terrain and it handled everything beautifully. The Q5 comes with an offroad setting, accessible through it Drive Select mode toggle, which locks the drivetrain into all-wheel drive.

An important contribution to the driving dynamics of the SQ5 is also the new electromechanical power steering adjustment.

electromechanical power steering adjustment. Optionally available is the dynamic steering, which varies its ratio depending on the speed and steering angle.

Even Sportier: The All New SQ5 We had the chance to drive the new SQ5. Before I drove that, I thought everything was in a Q5, why pay the extra money for an SQ5… until I got in it. The SQ5 is the sportier version and wow! What a difference it made. The second generation SQ5 starts with the same steel unibody as the new Q5 but it is a different monster all together. The SQ5 has that key ingredient in any Audi S model: more power. The old SQ5’s supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 gives way to a new turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. The new six makes the same 354 horsepower as before, but torque rises by 23 lb-ft to

369 and peaks nearly 3000 rpm sooner in the rev range. As before, an eightspeed automatic is the only transmission choice, and all-wheel drive is standard. The quattro permanent all-wheel drive contributes to the sporty handling. Customers can choose from two extension stages of springs and damping. The chassis with damper control offers a very wide spread between comfort and dynamics, which the driver can select via Audi drive select. In addition to adjusting damper control, the new adaptive air suspension can be used to vary the ride height of the car body over five stages. An important contribution to the driving dynamics of the SQ5 is also the new

Audi is offering the new Q5 and SQ5 in 12 different exterior colours (plus Audi Exclusive). Three newly configured equipment lines are available – base, sport and design, in addition to, the S line sport package, design selection and the S line exterior package. They influence the overall appearance. In the design line, contrasting grey add-on parts emphasize the rugged character of the new SUV, while the sport equipment line of the Audi Q5 has parts fully painted in the exterior colour. ParkPoint provides its valet parking services to a number of locations on the island such as Bahrain City Centre, Seef Mall, Adliya’s Block 338, as well as numerous hotels and restaurants. ParkPoint also provides parking management to a number of parking lots. Inspired by a desire to revolutionize parking technology, Al-Khan launched ParkPass, a membership scheme to provide both convenience and savings to its members. They may not even be aware that there’s a perfectly good car park available at the rear. The app will allow all users, whether they are ParkPass members or not, to access information about available parking areas – that’s got to be a good thing in terms of easing traffic congestion and solving parking issues.” Al-Khan is now in discussions with several banks interested in making ParkPass

W

ith its elegant presence, Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa offers its guests a sanctuary away from the daily humdrum of life. Just recently, the remarkable hotel appointed its new general manager, Rocco Santopietro. The dynamic hotelier brings to Ramee over three decades of hospitality experience. Rocco began his career in Gstaad, Switzerland at the Palace Hotel in 1978. Over the years, he worked with recognised names in Switzerland, Greece, UK, Italy, France, Romania, The Far East, Antigua and North Africa. He has also worked with some of the world’s top branded hotels including The Dorchester, Mandarin Oriental, Starwood and Wyndham.

You need to be a jack of all trades and preferably a master of some.

be a specialist. You need to be a jack of all trades and preferably a master of some. Once upon a time, in the old days, being a GM was only about interacting with customers – providing luxurious rooms, excellent service, and offered a good night’s sleep for the guests. But over the years, it has evolved. Rocco said that one of his key goals is to continue to grow the hotel’s position within the local, regional and international markets. Rocco mentioned that the role of being a general manager in Bahrain is not an easy one. There are more hotels; there’s a lot of competition. Particularly, when we were meeting, it has just been announced that there are 55 four and five-star hotels planned to open in Bahrain by the end of 2018 – this meant the doubling of supply. The big question was where would the demand come from and how do hotels best compete in such a market? When asked where he thinks the demand of people be coming from, his reply was “this is what I was wondering”. He added that there is a consolidation of hotel brands worldwide and this has allowed hotels to target new customers and grow in cities.

An enduring aspect of the Italian culture is their love affair with fast cars and true enough, Rocco’s hobbies include racing cars. Until recently, he was competing in the Ferrari 458 challenge. In his youth, Rocco wanted to be a DJ – in fact, he was one but his father stopped him, saying that he needed a proper job. Because of this, he decided to be in the hospitality industry and has worked his way up from then.

As a general manager, Rocco believes that it is very important to be able to read people; you must be able to do more than just talk, you must listen, understand and interpret the responses you receive. This ability is one of his strengths, according to him. One example is that when he deals with staff, he always tests them to find their strengths and weaknesses – ideally so that he can focus on their strengths while also work with their weaknesses. For the customers, he needs to be able to empathize and understand their perspectives in order for him to do the right thing.

The role of general manager has never been unmoving. With a big title and a changeable job description, general managers, as a rule, tend to be quick to adapt. On being a modern general manager, Rocco strongly believes that you have to be a “jack of all trades”. In this complex generation, you can’t afford to just

In our conversation, Rocco often referred to Antigua and the time he spent there. Antigua is one of the two major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Ringed with coral reefs, the island is known for its many sandy beaches. He seems to have a genuine love for that island. He said that in

many ways, Antigua is similar to Bahrain although there are a lot more beaches in the former. The “tourist seasons” in Bahrain are very strange, he commented. Typically, between June and September, this island only has a few tourists visiting. When asked about what he’s currently working on, he says that the latest project is a membership card. He went to elaborate that the membership card costs BD75 and provides a discount on all the outlets of the Ramee Grand, a free night stay, as well as special entrance to its clubs including Ibrida. He says that it’s an easy sale “the card almost sells itself” because it’s such good value for money. Rocco is thrilled to be in the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa and is looking forward to continue the hotel’s repute as one of the leaders in luxury. n

Man of the

Hour Bahrain Confidential speaks with the Bahrain Jewellery Centre’s Director, Mohammed Shirazi about success, luxury, and what’s next.

T

hough it is rapidly approaching its 40th year, high-end marque Bahrain Jewellery Centre hasn’t lost its shine. It has grown from a small unit in the Souk to an exclusive dealer for the world’s most renowned watches, jewellery, leather goods and fashion. The company’s long history, loyal customer base and excellent after sales service have propelled them to their position as leaders in the market. Here, it’s Director Mohammed Shirazi talks to Bahrain Confidential about what makes it so special.

Tell us more about yourself and what you’re doing as a Director of BJC.

Mohammed Shirazi

44 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

Bahrain Jewellery Centre is a family business and I am from the second generation, from my father, Abdulrazak Shirazi. BJC was established in 1978. I came into the business in 2004. My responsibilities included looking over the company’s operation as a director, buying merchandise and liaising with our clientele. It’s a very exciting time for BJC as we are expanding and opening up new boutiques.

Feature What do you enjoy most about what you do? The thing I enjoy most is working with beautiful watches. Next, would be interacting with our clients.

What is it that you love about watches? Some of the timepieces from Mohammed's collection.

The workmanship. A watch is something of an engineering marvel. I smile when I look at them.

What makes a great watch brand? History, professionalism, and rarity. The brand has to be careful in creating its models. Rarity makes the brand more exclusive. The story, tradition and exclusivity value are what makes a great watch brand – everything else follows.

What is the watch that has a biggest place in your heart? It is the watch that my late father gave to me. It is a beautiful Baume & Mercier. That watch has a sentimental value to me as my father used to wear it all the time. Whenever he removed the watch, he said “I can’t breathe without it”. For me, it is a very special watch. That is elegance for me.

Any trends that you observe in watches? Mohammed's most prized watch from his late father, Abdulrazak Shirazi.

Luxury in a watch can be seen in its sleekness, eloquence and charisma.

Watches are getting smaller in size again. For nearly twenty years the fashion in men’s watches has been for them to be as big as 45-47 mm. Now they’re going back to 37-38 mm. I think that is the ideal size for a watch. The attraction to smaller timepieces driven by the popularity of the vintage continues to grow. Luxury brands are also presenting smaller collections which are easier for people to apprehend.

Do you see any threats to the watch industry

from technology? No, a quality watch lasts for generations. The Swiss endured almost the same circumstances before in the 70s with the so called “Quartz Crisis”, and Swiss watches have bounced back brilliantly and enjoyed decades of up trending sales. I think that the watchmaking industry will never die.

What’s your favourite new watch on the market? To be honest, I really like the Patek Philippe World Time Platinum 5131.

How do you define luxury; in watches and in life? Luxury in a watch can be seen in its sleekness, eloquence and charisma. It is not a single thing, but the sum of many parts put together and the realization of what those aspects amount to. In life, luxury for me is happiness.

Any future projects planned? The upcoming Jewellery Arabia is the major one. BJC has been a participator in Jewellery Arabia since its launch in 1992. Our stall covers an impressive area of over 2500 sq. metres, the largest one in Jewellery Arabia. BJC has always been the prime motivating force behind this showcase and we feature a wide array of luxury brands from Patek Philippe to Breguet, Harry Winston, Frank Muller, Lange & Sohne, Hublot, Jaeger Le Coultre, Barthlay and Tag Heuer. We have recently redesigned and re-opened our monumental store at the Manama Souk. Also, we are set to open a multi-brand store in Oasis Mall. In terms of expansion, we are set for now. n

Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahraini artist, Ruby.

F

rom an early age, Ruby emulated other artists to better understand the creation of their art. Having seen Ruby’s passion for drawing, her family encouraged her development and aptitude for art. Sketching remained her manner of expression until 2013 when she began experimenting with colour and took art courses to appreciate the fundamentals of painting. Inspired by music and dance, Ruby combines figurative and abstract styles into her artwork. She links painting to music and this influence is particularly evident in her Flamenco and Ballet pieces. Ruby depicts the dancer at the very climax of the dance. “I use colour to illustrate the emotions of the subject matter and the movement to show rhythm”. Ruby often paints women from her memories she saw at ballets, operas and concerts— their solemn attitude, ominous thoughts, on pointe movements evoke emotion from her canvases. “I feel I succeeded as an artist when a viewer lingers in front of one of my paintings and becomes entranced”.

Art

Ruby mostly paints in the mornings and early afternoon, when the natural light is best in her art studio. She alternates between oil and acrylic paints, however, she prefers using acrylic paint. “My paintings are colourful, because I want it to reflect the emotions of the subject matter. Painting is a wonderful way of communicating that transcends language barriers” pausing “my dream is to become a full time artist”. Ruby AlAwani lets us in for an interview…

What motivates you to get up in the morning? The aroma and taste of my first coffee, of course! :)

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? I relate most to my Flamenco pieces. Flamenco is a powerful dance demonstrating a fierce and proud femininity. I love its emotional intensity, expressive use of arm movements and rhythmic stamping on the floor.

I strive to capture the purpose of art in my paintings to perpetuate emotional beauty Ruby AlAlwani

yet at least. Every painting begins with a concept. I typically observe something that gets my creativity flowing. Sometimes I sketch the composition to capture the major details of the subject. Then I make a second sketch in colour. Other times I sketch directly on the canvas and I let my emotions flow and see where it takes me. I know my Artwork is finished when I feel any additional brushstroke on the canvas would ruin it.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why?

What does art mean to you? Art in itself is subjective. However, to me art is a form of expression and a challenge to the senses. Through my paintings I strive to perpetuate emotional beauty. Painting allows me to release stress and project it onto a canvas.

Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished?

Adliya is my favourite. Block 338 has become a cultural centre and hub for different forms of art; from street art to exhibitions. Additionally, Adliya’s restaurants provide a wonderful and diverse culinary experience. n For more information: rubzgallery@gmail.com

Limitless Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahraini artist, Areej Rajab.

T

o celebrate Bahraini artist Areej Rajab's newest collection, The Ministry of Culture Bahrain presents a series of never-before-seen original, abstract impressionist paintings on canvas. Limitless is a testament to Rajab's unobtrusive approach and offers a candid look at how the subtleties of the artist’s surroundings inspire her. Areej Rajab is an artist who is, unusually and quite utterly, unbound by the forces of

52 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

genre and style. For Rajab the job of art is to inspire, not to imply. Her audience is her meaning maker. Her work is characterized by dynamic brush strokes, shifting planes of color and pulsating forms. Rajab's paintings are a window into the mind of an artist who has sought order in a chaotic world, she somehow manages to find pattern in the abstract works she creates. The exhibition will feature two collections of work. The first is a series of paintings that are intoxicatingly stained and layered,

Art reworked over and over several visits to the same canvas. Their colours are bright and plentiful, yet there is a muted quality to them that evokes a dream-like state. Each feels like a memory recalled after many years, pulled forward from some lost corner of the mind – a faded recollection of a once vivid event.

window to another dimension. Creating art work offers me a tremendous release of energy. It’s almost a relief to put brush to canvas, it gives me a sense of freedom I can find nowhere else. My mind opens and sometimes I feel like I am just the vessel through which creativity passes – a conduit for the power of art.

The second series is the artist’s latest work. Here we see Rajab return to a more suggestive style, though these works differ quite obviously from those in the first series they are both gestural in their abstraction. Although the viewer is unable to pick out any clearly defined scene, there is still landscape present in these pieces. They bring about a feeling that we are surveying something, through a particularly hazy, soft-focus lens.

Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished?

The private view will take place on Tuesday 7th November from 7-10pm. The exhibition will run through until Thursday 23rd November 2017. Don’t miss it.

What motivates you to get up in the morning? Every morning I am motivated by the thought of ‘a new day is a new adventure’ and wonder about what new experience or creation will be possible today. The morning is a busy time in my studio; it is when I prepare mixes and textures to be used later on my canvases.

different reasons. Every part of it carries a certain memory of a certain phase in my life which I hold dear. To chose just one town, a single area, a certain coastline or a favourite restaurant, it is impossible! n

My artistic process starts in my mind. I seize on inspiration from the subtleties of life that surround me - passing conversations, the parallel between light and shade, a child’s laughter, flowers as they begin to bloom – I see these things and I am suddenly compelled to begin painting. After I’ve been blessed with artistic inspiration, I begin by starting to mentally paint the piece, going through each of the layers inside my head. This provides me with the basis to prepare my canvas according to those initial steps. Then it’s time for me to start painting, to start that process of self-discovery.

Which part of Bahrain is your favorite and why?

Areej Rajab

Bahrain is a very small island, therefore every part of it is my favorite and for

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? Each piece of artwork I create identifies with me at that particular moment of time, and continues to evoke those memories and recollections whenever I view it again. It is really difficult for me as an artist to choose a favourite painting, or to chose one which I identify most closely with, as every piece represents a personal experience or emotion. To me each colour has a unique character and I feel as if emotion flows through me as I apply these colours to my canvas. My highest and lowest points are reflected in my artwork, and so I consider my artwork collections to identify with me as a whole.

What does art mean to you? To me art is a healing process. It’s a

BAH-BOMBAH Melissa Nazareth writes from her shores in Bombay to ours in Bahrain.

M

ost of you must be recovering from a Halloween hangover. Every year, hotels in Bahrain throw lavish parties that attract a bee-line and social media is awash with party enthusiasts flaunting creative guises. What has now evolved into a fun celebration is thought to have been influenced by Celtic folk customs and beliefs,

Death is deeply mourned almost universally. Funerals are considered to be a sad affair in most cultures except for a few that in addition to grieving death, celebrate the life that the deceased lived, as part of their customs; the New Orleans’ jazz funeral, for instance. The question we must ask ourselves is ‘do we mourn for the dead or for ourselves because we must now live without them?’ What if we didn’t have to live without them? Cultural anthropologist, Kelli Swazey, observes Torajans’, an ethnic group living on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, funeral customs and learns that there are two aspects related to death: one, the biological death and two, the social process of transforming one’s relationship with the deceased. The Torajans don’t bury their dead immediately rather after weeks or months and sometimes, even years. During this period, the well-preserved body is placed in a special room and cared for – symbolically fed and included in family activities. The idea is that biological death doesn’t end the relation with the deceased who continues to be a part of the family, just not in bodily form. After the burial, an effigy of the deceased is placed in the village and symbolically speaks to the living from beyond the grave. Swazey points out that slowly and gradually enduring the transition in their relationship with the deceased allows Torajans to accept death as part of life rather than resent it. It’s natural for one to take one’s time to come to terms with the death of a loved one and then recreate a world with their memories. Kat Blais, Co-founder of Global Sanctuary for Elephants, blogs about their observation of their rescue elephants that seemed to wait, hang on until their friends were okay,

before they finally let go. She believes every elephant that crossed over led them not only to honour death but also embrace it as an integral part of life.

About 10 years ago, my friend suddenly lost his mother to cancer. It came as a shock to all of us who knew her and loved her for her cheerful and friendly personality. When we got together for her month’s mind mass (a Catholic prayer service to commemorate the deceased followed by lunch or dinner, hosted about a month after the person’s death), we fondly recalled and shared our experiences of her, over smiles, a few tears and her favourite kaju katli (Indian sweet made from cashew nuts). Those 30 days had slowly but surely helped us recreate our world with her memories and keep her alive forever. n

Pearl of the

Gulf

Aiste A Daubaras shares her eclectic musings in a light, yet warm-hearted fashion.

I

nterestingly enough, the first purchase we made after moving to this region... was a pair of diamond earrings. OK, not strictly true... We bought a coffee-maker first, but I am merely trying to highlight the fact, that jewellery is such an integral part of this culture (and besides it was my birthday...). We were still living on the other side of the causeway and it felt strange to be wearing abaya on each of our shopping outings. Stranger still was to see all the local ladies confidently browsing, trying, choosing and buying their own jewellery. Interesting, I thought, they have no freedom to drive, but have plenty of leeway to purchase sparkles at a wimp, whereas in the rest of world girls are waiting to be given their first pearls from their parents or women to be presented with a coveted piece by their beloved. However, despite cultural differences in choosing, acquiring and wearing... we all love a bit of twinkle. Therefore, Jewellery Arabia, for over 26 years, has been successfully attracting both sellers and customers from near and far and is truly a shining gem in our event calendar. Some come here to sell, some to buy, some merely to feast their eyes and to socialise, but all agree, that is not an event to be missed. On my first visit to Jewellery Arabia, I was pleasantly surprised to see, amongst others, a greeting written in my ‘tiny’ native language - Lithuanian. Further still, a first stand we stumbled upon, was a treasure-trove of Lithuanian amber, tended by a chatty chap from my motherland, who comes here for a week every year, and then spends the rest of it lazily fishing and living of his profits. People here like

58 Bahrain Confidential November 2017

Baltic amber, so it seems. Well, people here like all kind of gems. With a nearly 4 000-year-old proud history of pearl fishing and trading, this island was The Destination for pearl tradesmen and craftsmen, so no wonder that Bahrainis are true connoisseurs.

Much like Bahrain, Jewellery Arabia is a multicultural melting pot of nationalities and influences. And naturally Bahrain, affectionately known as The pearl of the Gulf, became home to the one of the most prestigious jewellery shows in the world. Here, not only best gemstones and pieces come on display, but also island’s apt and unique brand of friendly hospitality. “Much like Bahrain, Jewellery Arabia is a multicultural melting pot of nationalities and influences.”, tells me one of the organisers. I suspect a vast part of show’s popularity is due to the organiser’s capability to keep up with the changing

times and the melt of cultural, religious and social divides. They welcome and accommodate everyone, regardless the background or the size of the wallet. Well, that is modern, liberal Bahrain at its best. And those winds of change seem to be catching. Looks like next year will bring more lady-guests from across the causeway, as they not only will be able to indulge themselves in the acquisition of beautiful jewellery, but also to drive to the 2018 show themselves. Way to go!n

1. Make the dressing: Cover shallot rings with vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Let sit for 5 minutes to lightly pickle the shallots and infuse the vinegar. Add Dijon mustard and 3 tablespoons olive oil and, using a fork, whisk to blend. Season with salt and more pepper, if needed. 2. Bring a medium saucepan of water to a boil. Add chicken; cook at a bare simmer until it is cooked through, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a plate, and cut into 1/2-inch cubes; set aside. 3. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside. 4. Arrange chicken, tomato, cucumber, avocado, bacon and cheese on top of the lettuce. 5. Drizzle with the dressing and enjoy! n
