Bahrain will host Jewellery Arabia, one of the biggest luxury events in the region, from the 22nd to the 26th of November. Safe to say life comes full circle, considering that Bahrain’s pearling industry dates back to the Dilmun era when pearling trade was at its peak. Even in the recent past, right up to around 1929, it was a prospering business until the oil industry came about. That said, there are pearl divers, though very few, to this day.

Bahrain has a rich past, if you care to explore. The Bahrain National Museum is a great place to start if you’re new to the island or even if you’ve lived here forever; a pop-up exhibition ‘Intersections’, which will be on until the end of December, offers a new and interesting interpretation of the existing display. Go discover the pearl of Dilmun and you’ll be surprised at how deep rooted in history and tradition this small little island is!

Black & White

ON HER EXHIBITION… The title of the exhibit is Periodical Reincarnation. It's a tongue in cheek literal description of what the art is, but also fairly aptly describes my reinvention into an artist. I love magazines and my collages feature unique pictures I come across on their glossy pages. As a bit of a collector, but knowing I can't afford to have most of the design surroundings I'd prefer, it's hard to read a magazine and not covet or find deep beauty in something entirely out of reach. So I collect photos as recognition of their (virtual) value; my favorite colour, for example. There are millions of magazines being issued world-wide, with millions of images of, say, a wall papered in cashmere of some gorgeous shade, and millions of those "walls" being thrown away once the magazine is read. I feel the desire to pay homage to these images, many

of which may never be used again once their fashionable season has passed, and create something beautiful that respects their inner value even if their inner value is simply being a great shade of blue.

ON HER CREATIVE BACKGROUND… I’m not formally trained as an artist but am well read in art history and have absorbed knowledge on design through personal research. Never though have I contemplated being artistic. Creating and inventing, yes. Art? Not once. I come from a very creative tinkering family background but didn’t execute my ideas until quite recently. Guess I just needed to find a way to create what I see without having to learn the rules, and it's gratifying to feel this sort of re-connection to my family.

ON HER STYLE… My artwork is primarily single medium collage. I’m a bit of a dilettante, so my pieces are abstract more as a result of my lack of drawing ability than by design. I don’t have an idea before hand how the piece is going to turn out. I simply categorise unique images by color, light to dark, types of patterns or subject. I love detail; for instance, when I’m in a museum, I don’t take pictures of entire images, rather I’m drawn to a fold of a garment in a painting, or the toe of an embroidered shoe peeking from under a robe. Designs, textures and colours also inspire me. Two of my favourites are Opal (read green-blue) and botan (read halfway between orange and pink), which stems from my favourite Japanese rice candy as a child.

ON BAHRAIN… Bahrain, for such a small place, feels like it is somewhere where your ideas can be manifested more easily and more fully than anywhere I've ever lived, and this is amazing!

LUXURIOUS ADORNMENTS & THEIR HISTORY

Visit the Asia Jewellers’ kiosk at Bahrain’s largest jewellery exhibition, Jewellery Arabia, from 22nd to 26th November.

BUCCELLATI OPERA COLOR COLLECTION Opera is inspired by Italian Renaissance culture: the ideal of absolute symmetry as expressed by the flower, which is both its symbol and a recurring motif. This makes Opera a work of art, characterised by sinuous, fine lines and harmonious forms, with eye-catching decorative effects formed by alternating solids and voids. The collection features bracelets, necklaces and chokers, rings, and earrings, and now the luxurious long chains.

BUCCELLATI BRACELETS AND CUFFS The so-called cuff bracelet is the contemporary version of the old slave bracelets, dating back to the Roman period, when they were the symbol of man’s devotion to woman, and it also recalls ancient Egypt, where the bracelets mainly had a religious and spiritual meaning and were executed with bones, stone or wood. Buccellati’s cuff bracelets perfectly show all the most important engraving techniques used, and they are the result of an entirely hand-made execution, with unique finishings.

DELMA KLONDIKE CHRONOTEC

Mastering speed and design for almost a century From its luxury-finished ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic movement to its tachymeter function, the Klondike Chronograph was designed to make men’s hearts beat just a little bit faster. This collection highlight from the traditional Swiss brand Delma has been created with attention to detail and the highest level of technical precision – and is sure to be an international hit thanks to its stylish, edgy design. With its high-quality Klondike Chronotec chronographs, Delma, a family-owned Swiss company founded in 1924, has called on its long experience: here, traditional watchmaking expertise and craftsmanship perfectly complement contemporary design. This watch is ideal for anyone whose tastes run not only to a fast-paced lifestyle but also to pleasure and great design: it is perfectly at home on a boat, in a fast car, 200 meters below the sea or at a party by the pool.

Detailed, precision processing The screw-in case back allows a clear view of the ETA Valjoux 7750 mechanical movement, a masterpiece of Swiss watchmaking with circular-grained bridges and blued screws. The 42-hour power reserve and the automatic winding mechanism ensure precision. A tachymeter, day/date-display, the indestructible, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and particularly the easy-to-read, luminous-coated hands delight men who are prepared to take on any challenges life might throw at them. Quite simply: a beautiful watch There’s no question that the Delma Klondike Chronotec’s craftsmanship, functionality and technology are impressive. And optically? Straightforward. Sporty yet elegant. The 44-mm case in stainless steel or coated with PVD yellow gold? The dial in white or black? It’s all a matter of personal taste,

as is the choice of a genuine leather strap with a crocodile pattern or a bracelet in partly-polished, partly-matt stainless steel. Details like the rotor decorated with Geneva stripes are simply quite beautiful and reflect the chronograph’s Swiss heritage. Watchmaking expertise for almost 100 years Since Delma was founded by Adolf and Albert Gilomen in Lengnau, Switzerland, it has launched a number of landmarks to great acclaim both from the public and from watchmaking experts. The symbiosis of traditional Swiss craftsmanship and contemporary design has long attracted countless quality-aware and value-conscious men and women around the globe. The pursuit of perfection and the chance to enhance watchmaking history remain the foundations on which Delma is building its future.

Its 44 mm case comes in steel or with yellow-gold PVD plating, is available with a stainless steel bracelet or genuine leather strap, and is water-resistant to a depth of 200 meters. For more information, please visit Delma online on www.delma.ch

BUCCELLATI A Century of Talent & Passion

T

radition, skills and excellence in handcrafting, creativity and the highest quality materials: these are the values that have always been central to Buccellati, a long-established family firm that creates Italian-designed jewellery.

Andrea with his daughter Lucrezia

A BRIEF HISTORY Mario Buccellati, the founder of the family business, did his apprenticeship at a very young age at the famous jewellers and goldsmith’s Beltrami & Besnati, where he was fascinated by all of the metals and stones and the use the craftsmen made of them. Having a knack for drawing and an inquisitive mind, he quickly became one of Italy’s highly respected jewellers and goldsmiths of the period and garnered a prestigious clientele. He even revived and emphasised the use of ancient tools and traditions to bring his creations into being. Soon he started to work for various Royal Families of Italy, Spain and Egypt, and supplied ornamental objects to The Pope and the great cardinals of Rome. Mario Buccellati also had some very entrepreneurial skills and, considering his success at Italian level, he decided to spread

Gianmaria Mario Buccellati 34 Bahrain Confidential November 2016

the business so, in 1925, he opened two additional stores, one in Rome and one in Florence. In 1951, Mario decided to expand the house of Buccellati internationally and ventured into the American market. When Mario Buccellati passed away, in 1965, four out of his five sons took over the family business, and among them Gianmaria (1929-2015) passionately learned the meticulous craftsmanship, and notably the driving force behind Buccellati. In 1966 Gianmaria took over the management of the workshops and the creative side of the company. Buccellati is the Italian “bottega” of Renaissance times brought into the 21st century: Mario first, then Gianmaria, and now his son Andrea with his daughter Lucrezia.

f you like standing out in the crowd, you will love Manish Arora’s Resort 2017. Colourful and vivacious best describes this collection, which was displayed during a fashion show at the Saks Fifth Avenue store in City Centre Bahrain. Alongside the new range, a few pieces from the designer’s last show were also exhibited. As this was Manish’s first visit to the island, he brought a local touch to his clothes by designing exquisite abayas and kaftans exclusive to Bahrain and the Middle East. It’s worth mentioning that most pieces leave enough scope for modest fashion.

Manish Arora talking to media members. The designer is wearing a watch which is his own creation.

fashion capitals like London and Paris in addition to India. Currently, he shuttles between Delhi, where he has his studio and design team, and Paris, where he lives and participates in shows. “Paris has been home for almost a decade and I love everything about this place,” said Manish who believes that the city polished him and is instrumental in making him the refined designer he is Manish often refers to his own heritage for inspiration. Being the first Indian designer to grace the ramp at Paris Fashion Week, he wanted to take his country and all that it represents with him, and express that in his clothing. “I didn’t want to design something just to please the west." But Parisian fashion is more minimalistic in contrast to

Manish’s fashion aesthetic. So, how did he manage to find a common ground? "Paris tells you when to stop. Every millimeter counts here be it in terms of length or fittings." As a brand, ‘Manish Arora’ believes that wearing the range must bring a sense of joy and a feeling that ‘life is beautiful’ (Manish was wearing a bracelet with the saying). Though Manish is a fun lover, which was evident from his talks and body language, he is serious about his work. “Fashion is a job like any other,” he said. “Most people mistake it to be glamorous, and it is, but only for those who wear or experience it; for us designers, it is about being disciplined.” That said, Manish finds time to do the

things he loves like watching movies and TV series. He even makes it a point to go to Goa for New Years, every year, since he was 17 or 18. Manish was here on a short trip but he loved the island and hopes to visit again. “I’ve hardly moved out because we’ve been so busy preparing for the fashion show but I find the sea surrounding the island to be breathtaking,” he said, adding that he appreciates how the country takes care of its culture and history; its architecture, for instance. Is there anything about the Kingdom that will feed into his designs, ever? “I understand that gold thread work is unique to Bahrain and would love to explore that sometime.”

HUDA’S MESSAGE: I am scholastically inclined and fashionable with a big heart for the needy. I started my career in medicine and eventually wound up in hospitality, the luxury hotels segment to be precise, because I enjoyed it the most. From being a simple girl in the administrative department to Director of Human Resources and working across brand chains, I have consistently climbed the ladder of success and discovered myself in the process. I’m an advocate of women empowerment and believe that I’ve have exemplified to other women that gender

can never be a hurdle to achieving our dreams. After being Director of Human Resources for almost five years, I’ve been assigned as Director of Talent & Culture. I’m proud to say that I am the only female on the Executive Committee at Sofitel Bahrain, sharing one goal “No Guest Leaves Unhappy”. Being a people oriented person has only helped me further in my career. I love designing as well and founded the elegant Lala Helena fashion line for abayat and jalabiyat. My gorgeous daughter Helena, who is my motivation,

HEALTH CHEK V

icky and Hessa, living in Bahrain, are the Founders of HV Holistic Health and Corrective Training (HV) centre in Seef. Offering customised programmes based on intense consultations, HV has a carefully picked team of highly qualified and experienced people who are also CHEK certified. Jemma and Charoltte are wellness coaches at HV. Further, the centre is affiliated to functional medicine specialist, Carole Symons, from Biolab in the UK, who works very closely with the team.

WHAT IS A CHEK PRACTITIONER? A CHEK practitioner is a health professional who is an intern of the CHEK institute, an American company created and headed by Paul Chek. He or she is trained to identify what is essential to achieving and experiencing health and wellbeing through a series of specific assessment technologies and interview technologies. He or she then uses the data collected to carefully construct a programme focusing on diet and nutrition, lifestyle and exercise

and other factors. All programmes are tailor made to meet individual needs – one shoe doesn’t fit all.

SERVICES AVAILABLE HV offers a range of services right from diagnostics and consultation – even over Skype – to postural assessment and training. Clients include those aiming to lose weight right up to the more advanced athlete. Further, HV has successfully healed diseases, back pain and knee problems. Clients are free to train with HV instructors or use their customised programmes at their respective gyms. There is no membership concept and so you only pay for the services you want – payment is per consultation. Moreover, clients can speak to their instructors over phone in case of any queries long after they’ve left the centre. HV also does education seminars and is already working alongside some great teams in Bahrain.

30-DAY METABOLIC RESET Nutrition plays a huge part and though

HV doesn’t follow crazy diets, clients are advised a 30-Day Metabolic Reset. During this period, they avoid certain food items including dairy and grains, and have more rooted vegetables and salads instead. Once the 30-day period is up, foods are gradually introduced and this helps clients identify what’s right and not for them.

Age Gulf Aiste A Daubaras wonders how and when the Western civilisation lost respect for the old age.

W

henever mention of Bahrain creeps up into a conversation with any well-seasoned business traveller, first thing they would enthusiastically point out that indeed our airport has the fastest Fast Track in the world. And that it is not an exaggeration, as nowhere else you can check-in (whilst comfortably siting at the check in desk), pass the passport control and clear off the security (without a single person queuing in front of you) in five minutes flat. And to set one off in a good mood, the slogan above the exit door wishes you a “Bon voyage” (why in French, I would not be able to answer, but suppose it is a part of the overall amusement). However, during my most recent trip, all that bonne humeur promptly evaporated, as I approached the boarding gate and witnessed a group of noisy and brash western youngsters unceremoniously pushing out of their way a lost-looking elderly local couple, who timidly and uncertainly where trying to figure out the boarding procedure. Although it was such a fleeting episode, and hardly anyone noticed it, this made me quite pensive during the entire turbulent flight. Unable to shake off the image of the bewilderment in the eyes of

56 Bahrain Confidential November 2016

the elderly couple, I sat wondering how and when did the Western civilisation lose the respect for the Old Age. Too preoccupied with chasing the Eternal Youth, spending thousands and thousands on fancy beauty products and undergoing painful ant aging treatments, we leave the care of our elderly to the institutions and fail to instill a due regard for seniority, neither by teaching nor by example, to our youngsters. On the other hand, there are hardly any “old people’s homes” in the Islamic world, as caring for one’s parents is considered to be an honour and a blessing. But please, don’t get me wrong; Muslim women do take care of their appearance, perhaps even more than their Western counterparts, just that the final outcome is slightly different. Whilst a lady in the West is losing her confidence and stance in the workplace and society with every new appearing wrinkle, a spare ounce of fat or a strand of grey hair, and no amount of facelifts can help her overcome these insecurities and social prejudice; a Muslim woman, on the other hand, will always command a respect of her family, no matter how the passing years would adorn her appearance, as mothers are particularly respected in this culture. And although Christian faith also

teaches ‘to honour thy father and thy mother”, unfortunately we seem to have lost the grasp of the order of our priorities somewhere along the way. Too busy worshiping at the altar of the Youth Cult, we forgot that we shall be old ourselves one day. As it was said by the Holy Prophet, that “If a young man honours an elderly on account of his old age, Allah appoints someone to honour him in his old age”. Or as one would say in good plain English, “What goes around comes around”.

58 Bahrain Confidential November 2016

Every girl dreams of her fairy tale wedding. She did too. She has been married for 5 years and though she had the most unromantic wedding – signing a piece of paper – it is the least of her worries. Her life is a complete mess and she doesn’t remember the last time she was happy or interacted with people. She sits in the house the whole day and lives in fear of what’s going to happen next.

MOTHERHOOD She got pregnant few months into her marriage and hoped this would change things, in vain. It must have been the stress and depression that her baby died inside her. She needed immediate medical attention but her husband

thought otherwise. She waited forever to visit a doctor knowing all the while that if she didn’t get the foetus scraped off right away, her body would go into toxic shock and she could even lose her life. She was distraught and stayed up all night, crying. She vividly remembers her husband asking her to ‘shut up’. He even locked her in the bathroom to avoid hearing her scream; apparently it annoyed him. After three long months, he finally agreed to take her to the hospital and she wasn’t surprised that the doctor scorned him for such utterly irresponsible behavior. Time passed by and she conceived for a second time. Thanks to morning sickness, she was constantly throwing up and was

her story

Cleanliness is something she struggles with every day. It doesn’t help that her husband gets dirty on the job and comes home reeking of petrol and the smell of engines. Adding to the horror is his abominable sense of hygiene: he picks his nose and wipes it on the couch, he doesn’t shower regularly, he urinates in the backyard or pool – apparently they have six bathrooms! Sometimes, he just jumps into the pool with his clothes on and then sits on the couch, wet, and covered in urine. He defecates, thankfully in the toilet, but then comes out stark naked and slaps his rear end all covered in feces. There are times when he throws folded and ironed laundry everywhere and all she can do is watch her work for the day go down the drain. She even cut her hair off because her husband refused to buy her shampoo. After that, he started calling her ‘a fat little boy’ and is always saying demeaning, degrading things to her.

FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! She admits that she and her husband have a lot of fights and most of them end up with him screaming and hitting her, and her crying. Right in the middle of an argument, her husband doesn't think twice to hit or slap her because he feels she is ‘talking too much’.

SOCIAL ANXIETY She is desperate for connection and interaction. She has no family and the person who raised her (not a parent)

Have a calling for community service? WOMEN CRISIS CARE INTERNATIONAL BAHRAIN is once again inviting new members to join its growing team (70 and counting) of 'counsellors' and 'advocates' Founded by Mary-Justine Todd, Women's Crisis Care International (WCCI) is a global violence crisis center that seeks to help women around the world. It operates internationally, with a geographic focus on the Middle East and Africa. Specifically, WCCI always works with many local partners to implement culturally sensitive programming in all capacities.

Once, he asked her, as usual, to shut up because she was making conversation while he was watching television. She gave up, and walked into her room and shut the door. In a few seconds, he was at the door, banging on it. She quickly pulled the bed and propped it against the door to prevent him from entering. It’s quite a heavy bed and she has not idea how she managed to lift it because the next morning when she tried pulling it away from the door she couldn’t. She sat in the room for nine hours straight, with her dog, without any food or water,

One night when her husband was hitting her, the neighbours heard her scream. The next morning when they enquired, she told them that if they hear her screaming again they must call the police because she was being beaten up. The next time her husband hit her, she told him that the neighbours had found out. To her surprise, he started hitting their dogs instead and even threw them against the wall. She is really close to her dogs especially after she lost her babies. They are the reason she wakes up every morning. It’s worth noting that her husband got her the dogs because he believes ‘they are a replacement for the babies they lost’. Luckily, she has managed to find a foster home for one of them since that episode.

is dead. She sees herself all alone in a foreign country with a husband who doesn’t care. She has such horrible social anxiety and there isn’t a conversation where her husband doesn’t feature. Throughout the day she gets these sporadic needs to vent and that’s when she calls the WCCI Bahrain helpline. She has spoken to most of the volunteers and even met them in WCCI Bahrain’s office. She is now looking out for a job with their help, hoping to bring some sanity and order to her life.

asked to stay in bed so she didn’t exert herself. She made a bed on the bathroom floor with a blanket and few pillows to avoid getting up. The doctor even suggested she keep a bell next to her bed so she could ring it when she needed something. Initially, her husband offered to get her water and crackers but after a few weeks he told her it was a ‘bad investment’ – he believed he was feeding her only for her to throw up and so he stopped giving her food. car review

A New City Car The 2017 Toyota Prius

The 2017 Toyota Prius grows on you, says Nick Cooksey.

T

he Prius is a distinguished car. It originally came out 20 years ago and only arrived in Bahrain now in its latest form. It’s famed as being a ‘green’ vehicle, that is ‘environmentally friendly’, and is a favourite car of Hollywood stars who would like to be known for their environmental sensibilities. The Toyota Prius was the first of its genre but since its inception other car manufacturers have gotten into the game. Its outward design gives it an unusual look. It has a sleek silhouette that you don’t normally see on the streets. The tagline of the Prius is “take everyone by surprise”, and it sure did that.

80 Bahrain Confidential November 2016

95% of all Toyota Prius models sold since 2006 are still on the road! While I was driving the car on the streets of Manama people were looking at me in a curious sort of way, probably because this was the first Prius they had seen in Bahrain. The interior is spacious with a cool looking

cabin and comfy seats as well as plenty of space in the trunk. If you’re in this car with a group, everyone has room to stretch out. Its interior slightly reminds me of the New Generation VW Beatle with its use of light colours and bare metals - although it doesn’t have the little flower pot - but here is a charging spaces for smartphones. When I first pressed the start button I wondered why the car wouldn’t start. It turns out I had indeed started it and the engine was already running but I just couldn’t hear it, it’s that quite and smooth. The Prius comes with the Toyota Safety Sense feature which has a pre-collision system that’s very helpful in tight situations.

car review Price Comparison Normally we put alternate cars in the range, but this time we just can’t think of any other car currently available in Bahrain that compares.

This is the ultimate utility vehicle, it’s not trying to be fancy yet is manufactured to the highest standard. It’s very practical and intuitive—an easy car to drive. It has three drive modes and I went on “Power” mode the whole time. It’s definitely not sports car performance but for the city, it’s good, and everything about its design maximises fuel efficiency.

Despite the competition from other manufacturers the Prius is still the benchmark others compare themselves against. It is the industry leader in its range and 95% of all Toyota Prius models sold since 1997 are still on the road. It will be interesting to see how this catches on in Bahrain since the price of petrol is on the rise and there’s beginning to be a change in mindset among the general populace.

PLANTS There are several reasons why adding plants to your interior décor can be a good idea. For starters, they kill dead space. Moreover, they add so much life and colour to your surroundings without competing with other hues in the scheme. Waikiki Kitchen

BAHRAIN

Bringing Polynesian oceanic goodness to our shores.

Chef Mohan Gurung

N

icknamed ‘baby face’ by his fans, Chef Mohan Gurung has been part of Waikiki Kitchen, Elite Crystal Hotel, since its inception, and played a stellar role in designing the restaurant’s menu. Specialising in seafood, he loves blending Asian and European flavours, a highlight of most of his creations. Sweet saffron, cardamom, sumac, zatar, local parsley, olives, vine leaves, labneh, and feta and halloumi cheese are a few of the local ingredients he enjoys cooking with. Chef Mohan believes Bahrain is a great place to live in with warm and friendly people. Waikiki Kitchen is a Polynesian restaurant and the cuisine, although very authentic, has its twists to suit the regional palate.

Hollywood superstar

Leonardo Dicaprio celebrates

his birthday month. Have you guys watched the Facebook video talking of Jack (played by the actor) in the movie Titanic being Rose’s inner voice? Do you agree?

Horoscopes Sagittarius (22 November - 21

December) - Collaborations and contracts will be an attractive focus point in November. There can be interesting offers and you could even negotiate or sign a partnership. The mysterious aspects, forbidden, exotic or taboo, of sexuality will be more attractive to you in this period.

Aquarius
