Inmarsat Aviation is bringing freedom to the skies with high-speed and reliable inflight connectivity!

I

n a world more connected and tech-driven than ever before, the aircraft was, not too long ago, one of the only places on Earth where we couldn’t access the internet. Now, with the launch of seamless and reliable inflight broadband brought to passengers by Inmarsat’s GX Aviation, technology is finally ready to meet the passenger demand in the Middle East.

flight tracking solution from Inmarsat. It utilises satellite technology to provide the exact real-time location of the airline’s aircraft in latitude and longitude. Also, Qatar Airways will be the first Middle Eastern megacarrier to offer GX Aviation to passengers onboard of more than 130 of its flagship aircraft. Two thirds of all airlines in the region are expected to operate connected aircraft by 2019.

Middle Eastern carriers are already embracing the connected aircraft, investing heavily in new technologies to ensure passengers have access to inflight Wi-Fi on their fleets. Just recently, Qatar Airways has activated a real-time global

on-board connectivity experience on par with mobile broadband services on the ground.

Necessity or Luxury? Inflight connectivity enables passengers to communicate seamlessly through a global satellite network. It is changing the airline industry and revolutionising passengers’ expectations of the on board experience. Passengers now expect the same levels of connectivity and access to online services whilst they are 30,000 feet as they receive on the ground. With that said, 60% of all passengers believe inflight Wi-Fi is a necessity, not a

luxury. 81% of Middle Eastern passengers would pay for inflight connectivity even on short-haul leisure flights, rising to 85% for long-haul business flights. Over half (56%) of passengers who have experienced highquality inflight Wi-Fi rate it higher on their list of priorities than inflight entertainment when choosing an airline.

children entertained during flights. Globally, parents travelling with children are also more likely on average to connect multiple devices to make sure that the whole family is entertained and occupied for the duration of the flight.

Some people might think think that inflight connectivity has a disadvantage but its advantages weigh more than the negatives.

Inmarsat is transforming the global aviation industry by bringing complete connectivity to every aircraft and flight path in the world. It is the only provider with a complete next generation HTS network spanning the world. Definitely bring freedom to the skies! n

A lifesaver for families Inflight connectivity is making life easier for parents when it comes to keeping

The ability to connect to personal devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablet now sits within the top 3 considerations when choosing an airline, behind ticket price and airline brand. With airlines in every market racing to install or upgrade their Wi-Fi offering, passengers will have a choice to opt for an airline that offers high-quality broadband, and will soon turn their backs on airlines not offering this. Over a third of Middle Eastern Respondents (36%) said they would stop using their preferred airline within the next year if it did not offer connectivity enabling them to stream or browse online without interruption.

Remaining Connected In today’s ever connected world, the airplane is one of the few places where we get a few hours’ respite from our mobile phones. Now, you can send and receive e-mails, keep your Facebook and Instagram page up-to-date or stream movies while soaring through the air. You will instantly get connected (unless of course, you don’t want to).

Flights no longer mean a waste of time For many frequent fliers, the plane has been the last sanctuary for calm and reflection before the next onslaught of meetings. For as long as you are in your flight, you were theoretically unreachable, placed with only a handful of choices like reading, listening to music, sleeping or even watching an occasional bad movie.

Our industry is in the business of freedom. We help people to explore the planet, to do business globally, to bridge cultures with friendships and understanding, and to enjoy better lives through the prosperity that connectivity creates. - Alexandre de Juniac,

Director General and CEO, IATA

Car Review

The ‘Safest’ Car Ever Made

T

he Volvo XC60 sits right at the heart of the big-selling mid-size crossover crowd. It’s handsome and luxurious and it wraps you in a safety blanket as comprehensive as the Swedish welfare state. I am very impressed with the Volvo XC60 as there were big improvements on its previous models. We got the chance to drive it along the mountainous roads which were planned in advance for us by Volvo. If you’re going to test out one of the safest cars ever built, you won’t find many better places to do it than on these roads. This rather shows confidence in the car because we had to overtake quite often slower movement traffic.

The Volvo XC60 seemed to think that it was a sports car. The mid-level T6 goes about its work with undramatic flair. With standard all-wheel drive and an

42 Bahrain Confidential October 2017

8-speed automatic, the 316-horsepower turbocharged and supercharged 6-cylinder emits power evenly across its rev range. The plug-in T8 delivers 400 hp and around 20 miles of electric-only range. It's the strongest of the lineup.

Volvo has always been considered as ‘boxy but safe’ but now they’re sporty but ultra-safe.

Bahrain Confidential went to Turkey to test drive the new Volvo XC60. We drove by narrow, winding roads really fast. Some of the roads were bumpy but because of the double wishbone suspension, it took the bumps really well. The XC60 is a lot sportier than it looks. There’s a clear family resemblance to the XC90, but this is the sporty younger brother. Not too sporty, though. Volvo has cached all the XC90’s good data, and trimmed some fat from its code. Volvo says that they have a very unique approach to design which they call ‘Scandinavian’. This was shown in the first Volvo we tried that had, what Volvo calls, a “blonde” interior. Every part of the cabin feels nice to touch and look at, from the stunning faux driftwood trim on the dashboard to the cream leather and very light interior. I think that this is designed for dark Sweden in the winter, it cheers you up when you get in.

Car Review

Volvo say the XC60 is the best car they have ever built. Comparative cars are the BMW X3, the Audi Q5 and the MercedesBenz GLC. What distinguishes Volvo from these is that it is longer, wider, lower and has more legroom. Looking ahead in 2019, Volvo will become the first major car manufacturer to go all electric. Every Volvo model that will be launched from 2019 will have a hybrid (twin engine option) and they are also working on autonomous options. Volvo has always been known for its safe cars, but ever since it announced

its Vision 2020 initiative that aims to have zero fatalities in a Volvo car within the next three years, the company is pushing forward on all safety fronts, with technology at the forefront of its strategy. Their vision is that by 2020 no one – anywhere in the world - should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. That’s ZERO fatalities worldwide!!! n Volvo XC60 starting price: BD14,990 For more information, call Tel. +973 1773 6222

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum and other diseases

There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Other research show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive

gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

How to prevent it?

Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Obsessed with your fitness goals? You won’t believe it, but that might actually be holding you back!

H

ave you been working hard to reach a target weight or a specific body fat percentage and just can’t seem to reach

your target?

Well, guess what. The reason might be simpler than you think. We often tend to obsess over our end goal; the six pack, the number we want to see on the scale, or the fitness model we want to look like, but have you ever thought about how much focus and dedication you need to have on the PROCESS to get there? When I started my fitness journey, I weighed 86kg. My height is 157cm so I looked pretty chubby! And I’m just sugar coating here, I was actually obese! After struggling with weight gain and loss

over the years, at the age of 25, I finally decided to make a change in my life, a change that will stick once and for all. When I made that decision, I never thought about how much weight I needed to lose. In fact, I never even thought of a specific weight target that I wanted to reach. I just knew that would demotivate me from the start. So I decided to ignore the ‘final target’ in the beginning. I knew that if I committed to making gradual changes in my lifestyle, I’ll see progress. It’s a simple equation that makes perfect sense. If you focus on the process of choosing healthier foods and increasing the intensity of your physical activity, sooner or later the excess weight will come off. The timeframe in which that would happen, a week, a month, or even

a year, should never really matter. Implementing this ‘equation’ allowed me to see unbelievable results. And THAT’S what I began to obsess over.. PROGRESS. A year and a half later, I reached my ideal weight and transformed my life to become a fitness coach! So think about the next big goal you want to achieve, but remember that the process you follow will pave the way to your success! Like all things in life, you need to have some perspective when seeing this message. As trainers, we often hear people that are overweight, claiming that they ‘barely eat anything’ or that they ‘only eat salad’. Two weeks of an honest food diary later, and the truth emerges that they’re often over their calorie goal, and salad appears as a side to the burger and fries. It’s not that people are intending to be dishonest. Our brains are incredibly good at concealing painful truths especially from ourselves.

It’s true that the aesthetically blessed can get away with eating pizza, but on closer inspection, all isn’t always as it seems. If your Instagram eye-candy has a cheat day, it really is a cheat day, or even better: a cheat meal. They don’t let bad eating habits become the norm. Additionally, when they eat pizza, they’re probably eating one or two slices, rather than a family feast with a side of garlic bread. Add into the mix the fact that when you’re exercising effectively and frequently, you’ve got calories to play with, and a faster metabolic rate to deal with any excess. So you can understand how it’s not that life isn’t fair, it’s just that they’ve cracked the game

Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Snej Mommsen, the artist behind BluBear Animation.

Snej Mommsen

BluBear Animation Tell us more about BluBear Animation, how did it come about? To have my own motion design studio has been a huge dream of mine for as long as I remember. Growing up in Bahrain I continued to work on my art, inspired by the complex and vast world of animation. I took the opportunity to develop my skills further in England, where I received my degree in animation. During my time there I learned to appreciate the complexity of this craft, the limitless possibilities of design and how I can use the creative elements to tell a story effectively. I was really inspired by the diversity of art styles, animation and design and I wanted to bring it back to Bahrain. BluBear was created with the intention of bringing that experience and knowledge here.

54 Bahrain Confidential October 2017

I find that the majority of the time, when people hear the word ‘animation’, they immediately think of Disney, or the cartoons that they grew up with. However, motion design is incredibly versatile and multifunctional. It helps to create strong messages and relay them to a wider audience. It has the power to explain complex ideas in a short space of time in a clear and engaging manner, making people care about your message and share it within their social circle.

What do you think makes BluBear Animation stand out from the other design and branding companies? Here at BluBear Animation we take

the branding and design elements and we bring them to life through the use of carefully selected use of colour and motion design. There is far more to animation that moving an element from point A to point B. A lot of thought and consideration goes into the motion design, so it reinforces the brand image and accentuates the design elements. All of the design elements are made from scratch, specifically tailored to each individual project and client requirements, and therefore I stay away from the use of templates. Whether the project is big or small, I like to go the extra mile when it comes to the final look & feel of the video. I focus on the design choices and how does the chosen style enhance the message and support the story visually. However, I also appreciate the tight deadlines that the majority of our clients have, and I put in 110% to meet those tight deadlines. When it comes to the style of animation, I choose not to stick to one. It is all about the client and what would work best for their specific project. Therefore, the client has more choice and more room to make their video more unique. Videos are growing in popularity over static images, so it’s important to create content that will captivate and entertain your audience, and make your business, brand, product or service stand out from the rest.

Of all the projects that you’ve worked on, which one are you proudest of and why?

I have a lot of pride in all of my projects, because each video is very unique and

requires so much creative input. However, if I had to pick one, it would be the seven-minute animated training video I’ve completed for City Centre Bahrain. It required a large range of design elements and unique colour combinations for various sections that were carefully considered in effort to enhance the script. The chosen style of the design and the overall look of the animation was also carefully considered as it had to be clear, coherent and most importantly- visually articulate what was being said in the script. It was both designed to be simple and clear enough to get its message across, as well as entertaining and aesthetically pleasing.

Due to the length of this video, it was crucial that all of those elements complimented each other and were consistent throughout. This project was both challenging and incredibly fun to work on.

People & Life Just last month, Bahrain participated in the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly held in China. Among a host of topics discussed, a special session addressed smart tourism. The Kingdom has already set foot in the right direction as far as this is concerned. The Bahrain Bus app launched in June this year is a case in point. Available on iOS and Android systems, the bilingual (Arabic and English) application provides information on all routes and bus stops and many features to make commuting convenient.

G

lobal tourism is at the crossroads with volatile economies and cultural clashes worldwide. There is no better time than now to actively discuss and pursue sustainable tourism. The United Nations designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Bahrain seems to be ticking all the right boxes. But what’s the next step?

Melissa Nazareth, Born in Bahrain, Melissa Nazareth lived on the island for three decades before moving to Bombay. Though miles away, she finds ways to connect to her first home. Twitter @melnazareth Instagram @melissanazareth

The island is also working towards promoting itself as more than just a recreation and shopping hub. It is pitching itself as the new destination for the Big Fat Indian Wedding. The Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) recently organised a familiarisation trip for 10 of India’s largest wedding planning agencies. Relevant local companies were also invited. Having witnessed one such grand affair earlier this year, the Kingdom has made a smart move by playing on its strengths – great connectivity between the two countries and ideal event venues and locations in addition to a welcoming environment with warm people and rich culture. That Bahrain is making commendable efforts is a given and the figures speak for themselves. Some 5.6 million tourists visited Bahrain in the first half of 2017, a 14 per cent increase from the first half of 2016, according to the BTEA. That being said, sustainable tourism is a community effort and will yield better results if the country’s rich human resource is tapped to the fullest. Again, there are many existing projects that ensure locals are part of the country’s tourism development plan; ‘Hurafuna’, the annual handicrafts festival hosted at Bab-Al-Bahrain is a great example. ‘Hurafuna’, literally translating to ‘our handicrafts’, brings together local artisans and craftsmen specialising in age-old, traditional Bahraini arts and crafts. It is held in the month of April, at the same time as the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix, to encourage sustainable tourism in terms of favouring businesses which conserve cultural heritage and traditional values. Further, the Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre and Crafts Industries Development Centre organise workshops and events to educate Bahraini youth and tourists about the many indigenous industries. The next step must be to inculcate teaching these local forms of art and craft in Bahrain’s schools and universities; may be even set up institutes that focus exclusively on such courses. Further, government scholarships for students who wish to pursue a career in related fields must be introduced. There is no dearth of creativity on the island and offering alternative career options will only give the local youth a chance to actively participate in the Kingdom’s development. It’s the best way to ensure that virtually every citizen is part of the process. I once interviewed a young Bahraini boy, on the organising team of Alwan 338 (the art and music fest hosted at Block 338). He had a degree in Agriculture from a Western university and aspired to use his learning and aptitude to develop Bahrain’s farming sector. This shows that there is a demand for such degrees and careers. Now, we must leverage this zeal to put Bahrain in the spotlight.n

It will feature an action station with trendy Copper Tandoors, dishing out famed authentic tandoori creations. A fine selection of breads from the tandoor to go along will also be offered. A carefully selected contemporary blend of authentic Indian beverages such as thandai, falooda, aam ka paana, lassi and chaas will surely tease the guests. On top of this, creative desserts will put a tasty twist on traditional Indian cuisine while staying true to its essence.
