The exhibition will be on until 31st October at InTouch Clinic-Al Wesam Center–Janabiya.
What inspired your first exhibition in Bahrain?
It's an interesting story. I had hurt my knee and was at the InTouch Clinic for a check-up. I noticed they had artwork displayed and asked them if I could share my photographs. The rest, as they say, is history. The theme for Vanishing Bahrain & Other Images has really evolved from my love affair with architecture, which I studied for my undergraduate degree. Traditional Arabian architecture has inspired me ever since I first came to the Gulf in the mid1970s as a child. This meant I was immediately drawn to places such as Muharraq and to find areas exquisitely restored to such a high standard was a real blessing. I've been trying to capture that beauty ever since.
What do you love about the Bahrain that’s ‘vanishing’?
I think it’s just the simplicity and the harmony with human scale that I love. The raw materials of traditional architecture place structural limits on the architect, which modern day materials do not. But rather than producing boring buildings, it does the exact opposite. It produces forms and patterns, which are familiar to us, on a scale we can comprehend and with a human touch that can literally, in some plasterwork, be seen in the craftsmanship. Hardly any of that is evident in the Bahrain that will remain if these structures vanish or are not used to inspire the future.
One thing you could bring back?
Walking. I think the car and motorised transport has decimated our dwelling places. Go to the restored areas of Muharraq and you will find, even in the height of summer, streets that are cool. The materials and mass of the buildings allows for shade, airflow and shelter. Even quiet voices can be heard as people walk the alleyways, children can play in safety, and neighbours live in real community with one another. Once people decide to drive instead of walk, buildings become obstacles instead of shelters, alleys become inconvenient instead of welcoming and the urban landscape is laid waste. A pedestrianised Muharraq would be the jewel in the crown of Bahrain.
How has Bahrain inspired you as a photographer and person? Arch, Shaikh Ebrahim Center, Muharraq The Shaikh Ebrahim Center is the focus of a number of beautifully restored buildings on the heritage Pearling Trail in Muharraq. It’s used for a variety of events celebrating culture throughout the year. As such, it’s an extremely important focal point for preserving the vanishing heritage of Bahrain. With a lens only as wide as 28mm and a very narrow alleyway to work in, the resulting image was a product of the constraints I was working with. It shows the arch and the mashrabiya it shelters towering over the viewer, but also gently enfolding them in the beauty of its craftsmanship.
As a photographer it continually inspires me from the bustling souqs to even the raw industrial areas of dirt and dust. For such a small place, the vitality and variety is truly amazing. But it's not just that. The most important thing is that someone like me can come here with very little photographic experience and then find himself showcased in a

national publication such as yours and have his own solo exhibition within two years of arriving. Because of that, the photography the nation inspires can be accessed and seen by everyone. This is evidence that Bahrain really is one big village where everyone knows everyone else. I've visited every Gulf nation except Oman and lived in three of them. Bahrain is by far the one where I feel most welcome and at home. It has changed me greatly as a person, but that's another story for another day!
You've travelled to 80 countries! What are the highlights?
Iceland for the sheer, raw, death-provoking beauty of the landscape, Japan for the meticulous precision of every aspect of its fascinating culture and Papua New Guinea for showing me that the purity of the world prior to industrialisation still exists. A few photographs from my visit to Georgia are part of this exhibition too.

Fort, Riffa The combination of the simplicity of form of traditional Arabian architecture is perfectly complemented by the raw purity of the sunlight here. Riffa Fort provides great examples of this, standing as it does on one of Bahrain’s few hills and thus free of the shade of any surrounding buildings.
art
Bicycle, Muharraq While on a day’s shooting in Muharraq, I unexpectedly came across this open gate. My eye was immediately drawn to the bicycle, the clothes hanging on the lines and the way that the whole composition invited my gaze deeper into an open-air courtyard that seemed to double as a fair-weather living room. I limited my intrusion to this one shot, very grateful that I had my wonderful 14-24mm, wide-angle lens with me. There are increasingly fewer spaces left in Bahrain where this kind of architecture is common; to lose it would be to lose a level of intimacy modern buildings simply don’t provide.
Skyline, Seef So much of Bahrain’s heritage may already lie under buildings like these, but while land is reclaimed for them, as it is in Seef, there is no reason why Bahrain should not benefit from both forms of architecture. It’s all a matter of planning.

ROGER DUBUIS VELVET BY MASSARO
The Velvet by Massaro trilogy is a runway-ready line-up of three 88-piece limited models with an undeniable gift for exalting feminine charm and elegance. Pearly iridescence The homage paid to the platinum blonde bombshell Lana Turner is entirely worthy of her femme fatale image. This model encircles the wrist with a distinctive Massaro silver strap featuring a row of pearls running down the centre, evoking the shimmering lustre of those its namesake loved to string around her neck, as well as the pristine whiteness of her unforgettable turban.
Birds of a feather The version dedicated to the Greta Garbo is instilled with an aura of mystery, expressed through black feathers delicately crafted by Laurence Le Constant and cleverly interwoven into the dusky strap, as well as the black lacquered dial with tone-on-tone charcoal markings evoking the elusive brunette nicknamed “The Swedish Sphinx”.

For those who love time-travel.
The Shooting Star Tourbillon is perfectly designed for travel because the corrector enables the hour disk to be adjusted without affecting the minutes, seconds, universal time or indexed time zone. The pushpiece is simply pressed and the watch is easily readjusted to the latest time zone being visited. Based on the principle that observing the stars has served as a basis for defining time since the dawn of humanity, Pascal Raffy and his watchmakers deliberately looked through the wrong side of their
loupes. They were able to gain enough distance to observe the rhythm of the earth’s revolutions on its axis – and of its elliptical journey around its star, or indeed the ceaseless circles drawn by its natural satellite, the moon. The twentyfour time zones that divide our planet longitudinally, albeit in an abstract and arbitrary fashion, seem almost visible from such a distance. It was this broader universal vision that governed the development of this timepiece. Seen from space, the spherical shape of the

Earth enables us to observe only half of the surface at a time. Thus was born the idea of representing the entire globe in a single hemisphere. A cartographer was specially commissioned to design this atypical and hitherto unknown 3D map of the world. Thanks to this ingenious solution, the earth’s surface can be seen in its entirety, without changing point of view and enables us to tell the time in all regions of the globe simultaneously.

Sai li ng with t h e B e S t Delma Shell Star Automatic aboard the New York Vendée Race, probably the toughest and loneliest 10 days a man can experience. From the moment the Statue of Liberty disappears on the horizon each of the skippers has to rely on himself and his equipment. No external aid and no stopovers are allowed, except in an emergency or for repairs. Sleeping is only possible when weather conditions are stable and the rudder can be left to the autopilot. At night the only light sources are the stars above, if the heavens are open, the glow of electronic instruments and the luminous hands of a reliable watch. Offshore sailing is adventurous and a true test for man and material, an undertaking where great skill, precision and robustness are the essentials for success. The World’s best skipper Swiss watch brand Delma founded in 1924 is the official timekeeper of the challenging New York-Vendée Transatlantic Race, one of the five regattas constituting the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championship. The five highly qualifying races that make up for the Ocean Masters World Championship 2015/2016 are the Fastnet Race, the Transat Jacques Vabre, the Transat Saint Barth – Port-La-Fôret, the New York-Vendée and the most demanding of them all, the Vendée Globe. All of these races have a moving history behind them, and it is for the first time that they are united under one single roof, the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championship. The five sailboat races
32 Bahrain Confidential September 2016
are always performed with the 60 foot IMOCA class yachts and comprise different distances. Some of them are sailed single-handedly, others in teams of two. The one sailor that collects the most points in all of these races can be considered the World’s best skipper. Over 1000 people have climbed Everest, over 500 have been into space … but less than 100 have ever sailed single-handed non-stop around the world. From Big Apple to Sables d’Olonne The first New York-Vendée Transatlantic solo race, that was held this spring, took singlehanded skippers from Big Apple to the French harbor of Sables d’Olonne on the Atlantic coast. This most demanding feat can be considered a preparatory testing run for the Vendée Globe that takes sailors around the world on a solo journey that lasts from 80 to 100 days. Both cities are iconic, New York being the symbol of progress and daring reflected by the skippers, Les Sables d’Olonne being the birthplace of the 60 feet IMOCA class boats used in this race. On the 29 th of May 15 boats started Downtown Manhattan at the foot of One World Trade Center to begin a journey across the Atlantic whose 3100 nautical miles take an average of 10 days to sail. It is probably the 10 most demanding and lonely days a human being can experience.
A true divers’ watch The Delma Shell Star Automatic is an iconic model of the Swiss brand. The model was first introduced in 1975, a true divers’ watch with a unidirectional turning bezel for divers to determine the length of decompression phases. The new edition of this timeless steel watch is an ideal companion for a long journey across the Atlantic. Its automatic movement guarantees function in harshest conditions as its only energy-source is the activity of its wearer. Being on the move almost 24 hours a day there is no danger the skipper’s watch might ever stop. Its 42-hour power reserve makes sure the watch will continue working even if put aside during a rest. Its unidirectional turning bezel with a clearly legible color-coded minute-indexation in anodized aluminum is a great aid for timing short actions like following a course for a certain time. The watch’s imposing size of 44mm gives it the character of an instrument and makes it highly legible in adverse conditions. Why a divers’ watch for sailing? Divers’ watches are the most rugged constructions in the horological world. Not only are they water-resistant, but they are also built to withstand harshest conditions. Their steel cases must oppose the water pressure that increases with every foot a diver descends, and they have to resist eventual
adventure
mechanical shocks without leaking, as a diver’s life depends on this, his most important instrument. The new Delma Shell Star has been engineered to be water-resistant to a depth of 500 meters. Even if you’re never going to dive that deep it means this watch has a huge reserve of stability. Jumping into cold water with a sun-heated watch, for example, means much more stress than letting it quietly sink to 100 meters of depth.
a given point of view. From deviations the sailor can calculate his boat’s present longitude. The polar star helps him to determine his latitude, as long as he is sailing in the northern hemisphere. These two values determine his position at large. Of course, modern raceboats are equipped with the latest GPS -technology. However, in the case of an electric breakdown a pro will be able to navigate using a compass, a sextant and his precise watch.
Thus a divers’ watch is the ideal companion for almost any sport, but especially water sports. On a sailboat a wristwatch is constantly exposed to the elements, to heat, cold and to shocks from hitting objects. Despite the high technical requirements, Delma’s engineers were able to equip the watch with a see-through back to give free sight on the beautifully decorated automatic movement.
Important: The helium valve The new Delma Shell Star Automatic is equipped with a so-called helium valve. It is a device that becomes important when divers spend some time aboard an underwater station or a submarine. The atmosphere they are breathing there contains helium, a gas whose atoms are much smaller than the ones that make up oxygen. Helium atoms will penetrate any watch, simply slipping past rubber gaskets. When divers surface and leave their vessel their watches still contain the gas that now wants to leave the small space as qu ickly as possible. The helium valve is the quickest passage to escape, protecting the watch from excessive inner pressure.
Why is a precise timekeeper so important? As soon as the coast has vanished on the horizon a sailor has no more fixed points of reference since everything afloat is moving in one or the other direction. The only external reference points left to be consulted now are the stars and the sun. But from the observer’s point of view they are moving, too. However, their movement is regular and can be foreseen. Thus star charts show the skipper where certain stars are supposed to be at a given time from
An iconic watch as a valuable trophy for the winner The Frenchman Jérémie Beyou was the first of the fifteen contenders who entered the harbor
of Sables d’Olonne in the French Vendée region. He had been on the open sea during 9 days and 16 hours and 52 minutes, covering 3460 nautical miles (6408 km) with an average speed of 14.85 knots (27.5 km/h). A 60-foot boat may sound huge, but in the middle of the Atlantic it becomes a nutshell. Boat and skipper are exposed to high waves and to gales that could blow a man off his feet. Moving around on a deck that is in constant motion is a feat. Going overboard at speeds over 15 knots can be deadly. To determine his best path Beyou constantly had to observe the weather and be prepared to change his plans at any given time. He wasn’t able to cross the Atlantic in a straight line, but to zig-zag his way following the best winds, tacking and gybing when he had the winds against him. It is easy to imagine his relief when after nine days he finally discerned the French coast on the horizon and was greeted by boats that accompanied him on the last few miles to the harbor. Stepping on firm ground after almost ten days, greeting his family and friends were his most emotional rewards. Being presented a special limited edition Delma Shell Star as a personal trophy will be an incentive to go face his next adventure: the Vendée Globe. www.delma.ch

Your latest collection, ‘Beyond’, is inspired by the idea of what exists beyond the world of controlled perfectionism. Are you a perfectionist?
In a way, I think we all are, and that’s how the collection stemmed out of the idea of letting go of controlled perfectionism and reaching out for something ‘beyond’ that, beneath that surface of life’s external beauty, and finding beauty in that indefinable realm of all things raw and absolute.

The Amal Al Mulla girl is someone who embraces her own perfections and imperfections combined as a whole. She is beautiful, strong and sensitive. She is not about a certain age or what she does in life but about feeling good within herself. My designs are about individuality and to celebrate how great women can be by truly being themselves.

The interweave theme pervades bikers, trenches, blazers and dresses, through to accessories, closures and belts of exquisite leather in plain, padded and quilted styles. Natural and refined, the style is defined by the detailing and contrasts of exquisite saddlery. The designs come to life through a geometric patchwork technique and defined interweaving. More irregular, ultra-artisanal, gipsy tartan interweaving pervades in jackets, trenches and mini kilts. The iconic geometric pattern is realised in bags and recalled once more on jacquard knits. READING GULF
Aiste A Daubaras spills the beans on her guilty pleasure.
I
f ever asked, what my uttermost guilty pleasures are, I somewhat bewilder people, by proclaiming that it is alas, not the crispy champagne bubbles, nor is indeed my partiality to exquisite shoes, and neither my weakness for good quality macaroons... in truthfulness it is just a simple joy of curling up on a sofa with a good book and submarining myself in the different worlds of gone-by days, passionate dramas of their characters, exotic locations or glamorous Old World hotels, inhaling it all along with aromas of foreign spices, refined smells of expensive perfumes, light sea breeze or fresh scent of dewy meadows... It is intoxicating to be swept along into the unique and different realities that each book helps me to discover. Rather not at all surprising, as I hail from a rather studious family, where reading a quality bed-time story was a non-negotiable rule, regardless of the busy social schedule of my parents; and also sharing the love of reading with my husband, accumulating masses of volumes in our wake wherever we move. However
soon people like us, including my lovely editor Melissa, will have to be entered up as endangered species, as, sadly, the reading culture, is rapidly dying among young generations all over the world, and more so, as it transpires, here in Bahrain. I had a pleasure of sharing my concerns on this dear to my heart subject with two acclaimed Bahrain-based authors, Noor Al Noaimi and Rohini Sunderam. Undoubtedly, we all agree, that modern youth has way too many distractions, in the form of TV shows, video games, cartoons and 'dummied down' versions of classic books, that neither stimulate young minds, nor help to broaden their vocabulary. And evidently one of the main causes of this fast spreading 'disease', quite often, is a lack of the right example at home. "When children walk in on their parents reading, the respect for the written page will grow,” says Noor. “The process is easy, give children time, take them to libraries, let them explore.” Rohini seconds Noor’s opinion and says, "Reading is a habit
that needs to start at a very early stage in childrens’ lives. To encourage it, a parent needs to make time and create a nurturing environment around reading. Make it a special bedtime treat..." It is never too late, nor too early to amend this. Just pick an engaging book and curl up with your kids, luring the young minds into the inexhaustible magic world of the written word...

interview
PUTTING BAHRAIN IN THE SPOTLIGHT Mohamed Isa, Bahraini entrepreneur and coach, co-authors ‘Success Blueprint’, a new motivational book, with international bestselling author Brian Tracy.
M
ohamed Isa’s story vows to inspire those pursuing their dreams with the odds stacked against them. How did a college undergrad whose first job was that of a janitor in UGB Tower go on to become the successful person he is today? “It started in 2002 when I decided to pursue my Certified Public Accountant degree in the US,” he says. “I was working in Dubai at the time and had to take a break to prepare. I flew down to Bahrain so I could spend those few weeks with my family. Unfortunately, I procrastinated and ended up taking the exam unprepared. After my exam, I popped by a local bookstore where I bumped into ’21 Secrets of Self-made Millionaires’ by Brian Tracy. It focused on how one needs to realise the cause of one's failure and counter it to ensure success. I realised the reason for my failure was not preparing well—a choice I regret to this day. I corrected my approach and made the cut in my second attempt!” Mohamed has enjoyed reading Brian Tracy’s work ever since. “Recently, a PR agency was looking for authors interested to contribute to ‘Success Blueprint’ alongside Brian Tracy. I saw this as a great opportunity to expand my portfolio. It was not an easy process. We had to submit our credentials and published works. I sent everything much before the deadline, and the rest as they say is history.” Mohamed expresses how thrilled he was when one of the editors who reviewed his contribution emailed him, “Very inspiring work!” He recommends the title, which focuses on how to succeed in personal and professional life, for high school and university students. “I’m sure it will be a bestseller,” he says, adding that he

interview was recently listed as one of America’s “Premier Experts” and is now certified to contribute articles in his field of expertise to publishers.
HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
“I took up my first job as a janitor to fund my education and once I got a scholarship I resigned. My salary was BD100 and I used it to buy my first Carolina Herrera perfume. From there, I went on to work for Unilever for BD1,200.” Mohamed recalls the words his uncle spoke to him— an encounter still etched on the tablet of his heart. “I got back home to find my uncle there. He greeted me, enquiring if I had taken up a cleaner’s job and said, 'This job will be the job that makes you a real man.' During my stint there, I met a gentleman who shared words of wisdom I never forgot: Education is education, what you do with it is up to you.” Mohamed is working on a book ‘How I went from Sweeping to Speaking’—quite an appealing title, we think—which focuses on this experience. The doctorate student is waiting to get his PhD before he approaches publishers.
WATCH OUT FOR!
Mohamed asks us to look forward to 3 more books on public speaking, which he is currently writing. One is intended to serve as a pocket guide, the other focuses on how to deal with 21 speaking situations and the third analyses speeches by famous people. He spills the beans on ‘3 Weeks with God’, a book inspired by his blog about his pilgrimage visits to Mecca, which is aimed to enlighten the Western world about the Holy Place as well as bust myths associated with it. I ask Mohamed if he has ever considered fiction. “Not really. I’m too realistic to read or write that genre but I would definitely like to complete reading John Grisham’s work to learn from his writing style.”
Tour Guide is another hat Mohamed wears. Where does he get time to do it all? “I’m proactive and disciplined,” he says. “I jot down ideas for articles and books before hand and usually write
Mohamed Isa shares a candid moment with Brian Tracy
“I took up my first job as a janitor to fund my education and once I got a scholarship I resigned. My salary was BD100 and I used it to buy my first Carolina Herrera perfume. during the morning hours. Sometimes, you look for inspiration and at other times, wait for it to come to you. Once, I was stuck in traffic and ended up penning down a 3-page poem sitting in my car!” When asked if he is a workaholic, Mohamed says he is just ambitious. “I believe in balance and always make it point to spend quality time with my family.” Fitness is something that helps him unwind, as do Thai massages. “I also love taking long walks at the beach near Financial Harbour; I got few of my best ideas there.”
“WHO WILL CRY WHEN YOU DIE?”
A lot of Mohamed’s work revolves around self-help. Most of the books he reads are also by coaches and trainers including Robin Sharma, Stephen Covey, Tom Peters, Deepak Chopra and Gladwell
Maxwell. So, does self-help actually work or is it an excuse to put off doing what you already know you’re supposed to do? “Self-help books are there to inspire. We all know what we’re supposed to do but do we do it? When we read about others’ success stories, we’re motivated to pursue our own goals.” We discuss how reading is scarce in this part of the world. “I always try to have a local context in my writing so people can relate to it and are spurred-on to read it.” We all have great potential and should try to realise it. Life is more than just getting a degree, securing a job, building a house and dying. We must strive to leave a part of ourselves behind. Like Robin Sharma aptly put it, “Who will cry when you die?”
LIST OF TITLES BY MOHAMED ISA
In 2010, while he was pursuing his management degree, he took up the challenge to write a book on investor relations, which met success, making him the first in his batch to achieve the feat. In 2013, he had his first collaborative, book-writing experience through the toastmasters network in the USA. The title focused on how anyone can be transformed into an effective speaker, and members were invited to contribute one chapter each. In 2014, he, as part of a group of certified world-class speakers and coaches, co-authored a book, which was conceptualised and went on shelves in barely 6 months. Launched in May, the 40-chapter title became an Amazon-bestseller in only 4 and half hours. Bahrain Confidential September 2016 55

Interview with
Panos Panagis General Manager of The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa
S
tirring the ship at the helm for the past 5 years, Panos Panagis describes his journey at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa as exciting and rewarding. “We’ve made extraordinary changes at the hotel starting from our 14th floor Al Fanar Ballroom with a perfect match of it’s amazing views that was completed in 2011. Following that we renovated our Grand Ballroom that has been a feature in Bahrain’s business and social scenes for 3 decades. The aim of this renovation was to turn the Meeting and Events facilities into a state-of-the-art venue including the Grand Ambassador ballroom, as well as all other nine small meeting rooms. At the same time we wanted the final design to maintain the characteristics of the region with a contemporary hospitable Arabic feel. However, Panagis is in no doubt of where the hotel’s Meeting and Events strengths lie, “Whilst the newly renovated product plays a major part in attracting bookings, it is our personalised service and outstanding food quality that ensures successful events and repeat business,” he confirms.
FORTHCOMING OKTOBERFEST NIGHT
“Consequently running special themed events the Hotel has managed to create a following of guests that repeatedly come back to taste and experience the food, ambiance and service. The forthcoming major event will be the Oktoberfest night on 22nd September 2016. This is an annual cultural and culinary celebration event, taking place in Munich, Germany. It is the world’s largest Volkfest or people’s fair. It all begun back in 1810 and many cities around the world today celebrate the occasion based on the Munich model. I had the pleasure of joining the event in Munich several times and it is a great night to be experienced by many. A band has been invited to visit Bahrain from Munich to play the traditional music that is so much associated with the Oktoberfest.” 56 Bahrain Confidential September 2016
Panos Panagis
HANDS-ON LEADERSHIP
Not many know this: Panos Panagis is the only five-star General Manager on the island who lives with his family at the hotel’s premises. “Our lives evolve around the hotel,” he says, “It is not unlike being on theatrical stage at all times as you constantly represent the hotel.” Is being an on-premises General Manger impacted your role in any way? “More accessibility is an advantage. I tend to know most of our guests by name. It takes a lot of effort, to build and maintain such loyalty. This is the power of the team spirit. It’s been great so far and I look forward doing this for few more years.” Panos Panagis describes his style of leadership as one that is “well involved” and says that “The fact hotel has done well in the past three years is testament that the strategy is working.” On being asked to define the top 3 qualities someone in hospitality must have, he says, “Passion, engagement and commitment! Hospitality is a lifestyle.” Having said that, he also ensures work-life balance spending time with family and friends.
Having taken up the role of General Manager at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa, have there been any specific challenges that Panos Panagis has faced in this role? “There are challenges at every work place and it’s about finding the right balance.” he says. “I focus on driving the team forward with constantly training and coaching. The aim is to increase our ability to engage with our guests, understand their requirements and come up with the right solutions to ensure that their whole stay, and every single interaction of the service process, is positive. Developing talent is 1 of 4 main pillars of our company strategy.” Panos Panagis shed some light on the culture of the brand and says, “This hotel is known for a long time to having very friendly staff and as the General Manager I consider this to be my main aim”. He further defines the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa’s culture as ‘Every moment matters’.

AMWAJ MAMAS
By Melissa Nazareth
An initiative to support stay-at-home mums (and dads!) all over Bahrain. Feeling the pressure because everyone around you is getting back to work and you’re not? Read on… Ouiam El Hassani is a Moroccan blogger living in Bahrain. This former Gulf Air flight attendant’s story will inspire those who have had to give up their careers to take care of family and constantly feel they aren’t contributing enough to the bigger picture. So, if you think you’re ‘just a stay-at-home mum’, think again! 74 Bahrain Confidential September 2016
feature
W
e have all had experiences that have changed us forever. Then there are those incidents that not only transform us but jolt us into realising how blessed we are to have a second chance at life. That’s exactly what happened with Ouiam, a career-oriented woman, who was thoroughly enjoying her life. She had a great circle of friends, a passion for fashion and the right job to drive it all. Around the same time, she met her husband, an Omani pilot–does it get any better? Yes, it does! Ouiam eventually moved to Rotana, the TV channel and even had a brief stint as an HR supervisor. When she decided to get married, she didn’t think life would take such a sharp turn. “It was not the same anymore but the real blow came when my husband and I had our baby.”
When I met her for the first time, she looked stressed with dark circles under her eyes. But ever since she’s joined Amwaj Mamas, she has told me more than once that her life has changed. Our group is her little corner where she can enjoy life on a personal level even if she has parental responsibilities. She can unwind, talk to other mums who will listen to and understand her. There is no fear of being judged because everyone is in the same boat.”
WHAT WE DO
But how is Amwaj Mamas different from similar groups in Bahrain? “Our group is non-profit. We don’t pay anything for the meet-ups. The products we’ve reviewed are based on goodwill after few companies approached us, and ones that I or the other mother’s already use and like.
“When you get pregnant, everybody tells you that life’s going to change,” she says. “But you can’t fully grasp the idea until you’re there. I had a traumatic birth; I was in the ICU and had 5 surgeries; I nearly escaped death.” When Ouiam woke up next to her little bundle of joy, she felt she had ‘lost her voice’. “For a long time, I wondered who I was and if I was doing enough to make a worthwhile contribution. All my friends were single and we didn’t have our families around, which made me terribly lonely.”
In addition to having weekly gatherings, Amwaj Mamas hopes to organise charity events like the Halloween party they hosted in October last year. “We raised about BD3000 to buy special wheelchairs for children with disabilities. It started off as a gesture and everyone wanted to contribute. We hardly had a month to put the event together and though we initially planned on collecting funds for one wheelchair, we ended up managing to pool enough for two!”
HOW IT ALL STARTED
Ouiam loves reading as much as fashion and writing. She is currently reading three books on self-help and nutrition. Talking of books, she is even working on a children’s book, which she intends to publish in the near future.
Ouiam decided to make the most of her ‘new life’ and started Amwaj Mamas in an attempt to get out of her shell. “It gave me an avenue to socialise with other mothers and we became great friends. Initially, we met once a week and enjoyed various activities including Montessori classes, excursions to exotic locations in Bahrain, picnics for our children, cooking and dance classes and more!” Were there any dads? “Once we organised a day at the pool for the kids and two fathers got their babies along. It was adorable!” Soon after she founded the group, Ouiam began blogging. “It was the most natural thing to do,” she says and confesses she has always loved writing. Why the name ‘Chanel Mama’? “Because I love fashion!” Amwaj Mamas has changed the lives of many women in the course of just a year. Ouiam shares an instance about one such mother who had back-to-back pregnancies. “Her husband works in Saudi and so she shoulders most of the responsibilities.
THE DREAM
“Being a mother is the best thing that happened to me. Not having a fulltime job is not the end of the road. You can take up anything you like even if it’s not a conventional job. It took me a while to realise this and so, I want to help parents who are in the same pit that I was in a while ago. I hope to do that with Amwaj Mamas! Amwaj Mamas meets up every Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Mums and dads with their lovely kids from all over Bahrain are welcome to join.

local HOW WILL THIS EXPERIENCE CHANGE THINGS FOR VILLA MAMAS?
This is a huge milestone for Villa Mamas considering we planned and successfully executed the project in quite a short span of time. All thanks to the great team we have. We look forward to doing more pop ups internationally.
ANY SURPRISES FOR 2016?
We're planning for a second pop-up in London this December. Apart from that, Villa Mamas now has an official app you can download. I’m also working on the release of my cookbook, which will happen sometime this year, and the opening of Mama Gourmet, which is a whole new restaurant, attached to Villa Mamas.
#Villa Mamas London Pop-up Bahraini chef and restaurater, Roaya Saleh, started Villa Mamas in 2012 with a dream to share her family recipes with foodies on the island. Known to support Panos Panagis local farmers by using local produce, Villa Mamas is the 'first full service traditional Bahraini restaurant' and will host its second pop-up in London this December. HOW DID LONDON HAPPEN?
The idea to have an international presence has always been part of Villa Mamas’ expansion dream. It was very important for us to test the market first and find out people’s reactions. Hence the idea for a 5-day pop-up at Truc Vert restaurant in Mayfair.
WHAT WERE THE STAR DISHES AT THE POP-UP?
Usually pop-ups have small menus as they're
76 Bahrain Confidential September 2016
for a limited number of days but in this case we created a detailed menu; for breakfast we served; Eggy Tomato, Potato Egg, Mahyawa, Zaater Bread, Balaleet and Karak Tea; starters included Eggplant Explosion, Quinoa Salad and Mathrooba; lunch featured Chicken and Prawn Machboos, Lamb Shank, Margoog and Chilirooni; and dinner was Um Ali and Mahalabiya.
Roaya Saleh in London
VILLA MAMAS' ACCOLADES
Villa Mamas won ‘Best Family Restaurant’ and ‘Best Middle Eastern Restaurant in Bahrain’ awards in 2015 and ‘Best Restaurant in the GCC’ in 2016 by a reputed food and travel magazine in the region. This year it has been nominated in four categories!

E
veryone’s talking about Florence–La Maison Méditerranéenne, a quaint little restaurant at Bahrain’s popular Block 338. Set in a refurbished villa, the dining hotspot is inviting with a well-lit exterior. A beautiful garden complete with colourful flowers, hanging tree lights and a fountain make us wish for cooler climes when we can enjoy a nice al fresco dinner. The interior is equally impressive with rustic Mediterranean décor–floral upholstery, pastel walls, and other natural detailing– that instantly promises a feel-at-home experience. The warm and friendly manager and staff greet and invite us to choose a table we like. The service is great throughout with proactive waiters who ask if they can give us a refill of water or take the 86 Bahrain Confidential September 2016
order for our next course. We also meet the hospitable owners, a Lebanese and German duo who, with Florence, hope to do their bit for this beautiful island they call home. Our waiter is a pleasure to deal with and gives us an in-depth idea about the concept of the restaurant and food. We go with his recommendation of mocktails–a mango and passion fruit mojito and ginger and kafir lime concoction; both are stars! Florence serves a complimentary breadbasket, which consists of freshly baked saj bread accompanied by tapenade and pesto. Though the menu features a variety of Mediterranean dishes, there is an Arabic essence that runs throughout–there are local delicacies to choose from as well as numerous seafood options, a favourite among Bahrainis. For our appetisers, we place an order of crispy fried calamari and
fried brie balls, which work up quite an appetite for our main course, a portion of filet mignon served with two side dishes and a sauce of our choice; the butter parsley sauce steals the show for us. Our dessert is an unpretentious crepe with Kinder chocolate, berries and a scoop vanilla ice cream. All in all, it's a lovely Saturday evening. We believe Florence is definitely a must-try. Having said that, tucked away in one of the island’s busiest, competitive restaurant hubs, it is up for a tall order of not just impressing but also retaining Bahrain’s foodies.
