FOR RESTLESS SLEEPERS NEW & EXCLUSIVE… Francesca Ruffini Stoppani, the spirit behind the brand FRS has transformed a personal passion into a collection which every season evolves naturally with a creative flow. To dress “in pajama” is not for her an affectation, a capricious styling or an eccentric game- on the contrary it is a considered attitude, which privileges comfort and elegance while being timeless. Francesca is inspired for the spring summer collection by Japanese landscapes, a sublime world of delicate beauty. A past rich of fragile elegance, saturated of reservedness and silence. Antique imagery become elaborated in artistic prints, which elongate like shadows on fluid kimonos – which are a leitmotiv of the collection, naturally derived from the traditional Japanese dress which was worn to host and entertain. A simple and sharp fit, extremely modern and versatile, which can effortlessly accompany jeans or an evening dress.

World’s #1 Dry Shampoo Church & Dwight Co. Inc. Join Forces with AREEN Middle East to Make Iconic British Brand Batiste Available Across the Gulf.

Tadah - It’s finally here! Oh my was I excited to hear that BatisteTM, World’s #1 dry shampoo brand was officially launching their product line across the Middle East. I can honestly say that this has been a beauty staple for me from about the age of 10 and I was thrilled to be invited to the official launch that took place at Soh Art + Beauty in Galleria Mall, Dubai. A registered trademark of Church & Dwight Co. Inc., Batiste is currently one of the fastest growing shampoo brands in the UK & in the world. Between us lovelies, it’s easy to see why!

World’s #1

Dry Shampoo

Beauty

Fouz Al Fahad

Fouz Al Fahad Kuwaiti Celebrity Beauty Blogger Fouz was very approachable and spoke so passionately about the brand that I found myself having an authentic girly giggle with her about all things beauty based. Speaking about the brand, Fouz Al Fahad said: “Maintaining great looking hair can be a challenging mission because of our active lifestyles. Batiste has become an essential hair care product for me. I travel so frequently with little time to get ready or touch up my hair do, and when I need a quick fix, I can always count on Batiste to refresh and restyle my hair whenever, wherever. I truly believe that it can prove to be a life saver for women who are on the go with busy schedules.”

At the heart of all Batiste™ Dry Shampoos is an innovative starch based ‘no water needed’ formulation which helps absorbs dirt, grease and product build up when massaged through dry hair. Designed for a busy lifestyle, it helps refresh hair in 1 minute without water in three easy steps: spray into roots, massage into hair, and brush to style. The entire range is specially formulated to instantly fix and revitalize greasy, dull and lifeless hair; add volume to thin, flyaway hair and add texture and body to hair required for styling.

AREEN Middle East Me, Myself and Hair Invited guests were asked to try out the product first-hand and were offered instant hair makeovers. Being the wallflower that I am I of course volunteered to try out one of the five variants of fragrances. This consisted of: Blush, Original, Oriental, Cherry and Floral. One of the inhouse hairdressers instantly set to work on my hair and I’m pleased to say that it was instantly revived from its usual limp state and my hair adorned a delicate scent. Added bonus if you’re in a smoking area and you just need that instant refresh! If you haven’t tried this innovative product, I promise you that you will be converted instantly, as it is simply the fastest yet easiest way to great looking hair with minimal effort. As I chitchatted my way amongst fellow guests it was heart warming to know that I wasn’t the only addict who would stock up on dry shampoo when ever I was travelling outside of the country. Phewf! My luggage allowance can now be utilised for my love of shoes.

Speaking about the brand’s plans in the Middle East, Mr. Shadi Khudr, and Regional Marketing Manager at AREEN Middle East said: “Batiste Dry Shampoo is an excellent addition to our product portfolio. We are confident that this market will receive the brand very well as it instantly refreshes hair and is a perfect product to use between washes for instant gorgeous & fresh hair. In the coming months, we will be looking at making the fragrance line available to consumers as widely as possible. Additionally, we will be looking to bring more products from the other ranges offered by the Batiste brand”. The Batiste Dry Shampoo range will be available in all major retail outlets such as Al Jishi Pharmacy, Carrefour, Panda & Boots across Bahrain at approximately 3.4BD for a 200ml aerosol bottle. A small price to pay for beauty perfection! n

Coffee Talks Bahrain Confidential experiences the expertly crafted coffee, tasty food and smooth jams at the Ministry of Coffee.

B

eing an expat can be hard at times therefore my lovely Bahraini friend introduced me to THE hippest spot in Bahrain to indulge my caffeine addiction alongside everything quirky. The Ministry of Coffee has recently opened in Sanad and has created a following among local ladies since. This charming coffee shop aims to provide a space for those who want to sip and talk over coffee in a cosy setting. Amidst the trendy interiors and the ambiance of an urban living room where conversations can ensue, the Ministry of Coffee has brought back the comforting feel of a shared cup of coffee. An upstairs seating area is also available to accommodate more guests. I particularly adored the eclectic music of all the rock legends that we know and love playing in the background. Aside from the trendy vibe of the Ministry of Coffee, they are offering a creative menu with meals and special drinks to keep your taste buds ticking over. What’s even more commendable is the pocket-friendly price of everything! You can either enjoy freshly baked pastries with your caffeine of choice (using only handpicked premium coffee beans from Italy) or just indulge in their tasty salads, bagels or sandwiches. Everyone can also switch up their routine and try their Mate Tea served with an exclusive straining straw – the first of its kind in Bahrain. The Mate Tea is rich in antioxidant and has incredible health benefits. Refuel at the Ministry of Coffee before the F1 with their array of beverages! Happy Hours are available from 3pm to 6pm, 7 days a week for a limited time only. Ministry of Coffee is currently offering Buy 1 get 1 free on all drinks and 50% off food orders. On the 1st of May for Labour Day, anyone who buys a cup of coffee and tags on them in it on Instagram will receive a voucher for their next free hot drink. People & Life

A

s a child, I loved long drives. I’d sit in the back seat of our Corolla, looking out the window, feeling liberated as the wind caressed my face and played with my hair. We’d cruise along Bahrain’s sunbaked highways, the cassette player serenading us. Though fully aware of neatly trimmed bushes and tall lampposts punctuating the seemingly neverending divider, and forming a mirage, I’d get lost in my own world. It was here that I’d find myself in ways that I never could otherwise. After all these years, road trips continue to nourish my higher self, if I may. I recently took one such trip; I’d tagged along with him to one of Mumbai’s busiest industrial areas. We were inching forward in chock-a-block traffic when a young man, no more than 35, caught my attention. He was running from one vehicle to another, wearing close to broken rubber slippers and holding a red plastic tub. Mercury rising and six wheelers belching smoke didn’t help his situation. I saw him get rejected multiple times before he struck a deal; a quick exchange of a fresh, green cucumber for cash and he was off to seek another parched soul, victim to Bombay’s merciless summer.

Pit stop at a local soda waalaah’s to drink Bombay's beloved fresh lime soda laced with chaat masala (spice) available at any retail store in Bahrain

BAH-BOMBAH

How much trouble some people take to earn life’s basic necessities that many of us take for granted! We see young and even old Bahraini men selling water at street lights ever so often. Parking lots are always milling with the expat car cleaner looking to make a quick buck. Fruit sellers, local and expat, selling watermelons on roadsides are another example. May be we can’t help them all but we sure can make a difference to at least one of them. How are you going to change a life today? Art

The Victory Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of the artist behind “The Victory” and the “Muse” series. What motivates you to get up in the morning? Once I was sitting in Starbucks Paris on a rainy day and I saw a pigeon running in the rain with its legs without using its wings, it ran through a puddle of water and splashed it everywhere. The Pigeon then somehow managed to come into Starbucks where I was, wet as hell still running like a chicken and every one was mortified. Soon enough it ran out and in to the rain again. SO, to answer the question, I find that being curious makes life worth living.

Art quickly they have nothing in common except an unusual circumstance where both are titled magicians by trade. Conversations about Art amongst artists nowadays flow in the same manner. Everyone is different and every one is also an artist. Personally speaking, I believe that Art is an act of conviction. But, this applies to me only.

Some of your artworks were seen as thought-provoking, what do you aim to communicate through your art? When I was sixteen I created a watercolour piece about Adam and Eve naked in a garden for the Bahrain Art society. I never meant to draw nudes or religious themes, I also was not intentional about provoking the public, my only intention at the time and perhaps still continues today - was/is to experience being confirmed in my sense of self through the process of Drawing/Art. At the time I was asked to take down the nude work and of course I was the teenage scandal. This theme of innocently provoking the public has continued till this day, I naturally provoke with out meaning to. To answer your question, I am not sure I have an intentional theme I wish to communicate. But I do have various interests and topics I am passionate about that generally relate to being female.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I love the whole of Bahrain, my favourite place is the farmer's market in winter and the Cinema in Summer. I really enjoy a life of solitude, I love being with my self traveling and spending quality time with my family. n

Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? I identify with my 8mx3m large scale drawing with the stampede of horses titled "The Victory" Have you ever heard of the saying "It doesn't matter if you win a battle if you lose the war" or vice versa... The Victory is a representation of that. My work is mostly personal and

autobiographical however, since moving to Paris last year, I am reinventing my artistic style.

What does art mean to you? If Cinderella's fairy godmother was having a conversation about her conviction to create magic to some other magician who specialises in card tricks - you realise very

hotography... you don’t need to be adept with a pencil or fluent with a paintbrush, the world’s your canvas. In short, photography is an art form almost anyone can enjoy from a mobile phone user to a pro SLR owner. To this end, Bahrain Arts Society's Photoclub is empowering the Kingdom to improve their photographic skills by focusing on “creativity through the lense”. How? Firstly by example, with an inspiring exhibition of images by the Photoclub”s esteemed members. Many of whom have won international awards and accolades. Secondly via encouragement, through a series of workshops held by the Nikon

Youngsters especially will be invited to enter one of the competitions perhaps “Creative Selfies”, “ My Friends” or “Architecture At The Harbour” all subject’s youngsters can relate to via a mobile phone camera. However, let’s not forget photography has a rich heritage; Haider Rafeé has amassed a vast collection of historic cameras, 80 of which he will be exhibiting at the Festival. Some more than 100 years old. Antiques that captured Bahrain’s past, perhaps the first oil well opening, the sea lapping the shoreline at Bab-al-Bahrain or swimming in fresh water springs at Adahri Park. All reminders of the power of photographs to evoke a nostalgic moment in time, frozen in a second – captured - then timeless for immortality.

Perhaps that’s the essence of the Photographic Festival, a vision to awaken the power of evocative imagery and stimulate the desire to capture life’s significant moments - more imaginatively. The inaugural Bahrain Photographic Festival 2017 which will take place from 10th to 20th April with a full program of events daily from 11am till 8pm. The Festival is being held on the 2nd floor of Harbour Gate within Bahrain Financial Harbour.

People & Life

The Race Track Gulf Aiste A Daubaras shares her eclectic musings in a light, yet warm-hearted fashion.

I

t is a well-known fact that every self-respecting Monaco citizen rents out their apartment during the week of the Grand Prix for a king's ransom, escaping the noise and the herds of motorsport enthusiasts for some peace and quiet. Well, on this tiny island, we do exactly the opposite, as it’s the only time in the social calendar, when our Kingdom comes alive. Bahrain is buzzing with various events, private parties and corporate entertainment. We invite our friends from near and far; immersing ourselves in a whirlwind of adrenaline and exhaust fumes that Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix brings in its wake. The bars and clubs are heaving, the businesses are booming... or so we would hope. Comparing our major annual event with Monaco's F1 allows us to wonder, “Why doesn’t it attract more motorsport lovers from all over the world?” To get a full picture, I decided to ask a friend, who, as a race-car manager, he got to know every race-track in the world, better than the back of his own hand. Sadly, it turns out that the impression we have made is in fact not all that dazzling.

60 Bahrain Confidential April 2017

This has nothing to do with our excellent facilities. Our circuit is quite interesting and challenging from a technical viewpoint. The dust from the desert and the overheating of the tyres, resulted in its conversion into a 'night race', therefore posing an interesting challenge for both support teams and their drivers. There was also some mention of the importance of 'smelling' the grip level, but he lost me right there, so I shall not dwell further on that. Despite all these exciting features, we are still perceived with a rather lukewarm enthusiasm. As it turns out, our audience is a bit of a let down due to their evident lack of motorsport comprehension. European viewers, on the other hand, tend to have an extensive F1 knowledge, recognising differences in drivers' styles and techniques, and the teams know it, which affects the atmosphere on the track as well. Let's be honest, most of us indeed go to the races just to see and be seen, to eat and drink, and meet our friends. Interestingly enough, simultaneously I am writing an article for one of the London magazines about the horse racing attendance etiquette, and among other things, shall be offering the same advice

– please do your homework. The race is not just a background for a social chitchat. People are putting an enormous amount of work for it to happen, so the least we, viewers, can do is learn to appreciate it. Even a little background knowledge, makes the spectators’ role all the more exciting. Besides, you can also proudly tell any overseas guest, that we do not need to be compared to Monaco Grand Prix; we have enough unique features to make Bahrain F1 stand out in its own way. Just that the audience needs to pull up their socks... well, just a little bit. n

sia de Cuba has nestled its Latino roots in to the heart of Block 338, Adliya and it’s easy to see why tongues have already started wagging. The buzz is certainly justified as even when you walk in to the premises you are captivated by the peculiar, yet awe-inspiring décor. It is creatively made up of brickwork, ornate furnishings with a floor-to-ceiling

64 Bahrain Confidential April 2017

plant wall feature to provide an outdoor courtyard vibe, which is outstandingly stunning. Highly regarded Cuban-born and educated executive chef Luis Pous is at the very core of the kitchen and his menu allows for an eclectic, yet overwhelmingly delicious array of dishes. The original ‘mash-up’ compliments Asian techniques and

ingredients, with a traditional Cuban food. During his five years as Executive Chef at Asia de Cuba Chef Pous has been instrumental in the brands growth and has created a range of signature dishes that are celebrated internationally. China Grill Management (CGM), a company founded by Jeffery Chodorow over 25 years ago has opened up Asia de Cuba within Gallery 21, Block 338, Adliya, Bahrain and you will not be disappointed. Chodorow’s inspiration was based on Havana’s Chinatown neighbourhood, “El Barrio Chino de la Habana” after he fell into conversation with a customer, a young woman from Cuba whose parents owned a street-corner Chinese restaurant in Havana. She spoke of the favourite dishes of her childhood, things like fried rice with avocado and plantains After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and then its Law School, both with honors, Jeffrey practiced law for several years before becoming a successful real estate developer.

Going Out the idea of the hotel restaurant from a mere guest amenity to dining destination; a restaurant within a hotel rather than a hotel restaurant.

Highly regarded Cuban-born and educated executive chef Luis Pous is at the very core of the kitchen and his menu allows for an eclectic, yet overwhelmingly delicious array of dishes.

Jeffery warmly greeted us and explained his background that derived from his lifelong love of dining which led him to open Manhattan’s venerable China Grill in 1987, just for fun. It just celebrated its 27th anniversary, making it one of New York's most iconic restaurants. Recognizing the success of China Grill South Beach, world-renowned hotelier Ian Schrager asked Jeffrey to re-launch his Blue Door restaurant at Miami’s Delano hotel. Within a year, Blue Door was named one of America’s Best New Restaurants by Esquire Magazine, going on to become one of the world's most financially successful and iconic hotel restaurants, and a Miami mainstay. The Schrager/Chodorow joint venture proved to be a wildly successful partnership. The opening of Asia de Cuba at Morgans in New York (with it's iconic first of it's kind sharing table) in 1997 was followed in 1999 by Asia de Cuba and Seabar at Mondrian in Los Angeles, and Asia de Cuba at St Martins Lane in London, eventually becoming the exclusive Food & Beverage partner of Morgans Hotel Group—an expansion into numerous other Morgans hotels which transformed

We were fortunate enough to sample Dishes at the new restaurant including red snapper ceviche with Thai chili, red onion, cilantro and plantains and tuna with seared foie gras, orange, Asian pear and malanga chips. My personal favourite was the ‘Vaca Frita’ consisting of fried and shredded skirt or flank steak. It was topped with sauteed onions and served with rice and black beans Some of the small plates include shrimp churros with sesame and coconut curry; braised beef short rib ropa vieja spring rolls with rocoto sweet and sour sauce; chicken chicharrones, served either traditional or with honey-soy glaze and an Asia de Cuba top seller, tunapica tartare with crispy wontons, Spanish olives, almonds, currants and avocado ceviche. Simply amazing! Jeffery affectionately talked about visiting Cuba where he had to partake in 4 cultural activities on a daily basis including where he was unable to have fish in any of the restaurants, as they weren’t able to take the boats out. By chance, on an afternoon stroll luck was on his side and he was able to purchase a fish from a street vendor. This was much to the restaurant chefs’ delight as he agreed to cook for him. Jeffery also expressed his bewilderment of trying to obtain an Internet signal in a “five star premises’, one of which he added would not be listed as even a 1* elsewhere. You can’t help but respect his honesty that he is most certainly not a chef, and he doesn’t elude to this fact either. One thing that is apparent is that he prides himself on consistency throughout Asia de Cuba; however, this is not the case as far as décor is concerned as each ‘branch’ has an entirely different layout and design. He even went as far as hiring a top scientist to devise a plan to ensure that their crispy seaweed dish would in fact stay crispy amidst humidity. Now, that’s the type of dedication I like to hear! I queried if there was anything that he didn’t like on the menu and he kindly responded, “No, I like everything or else it wouldn’t be on the menu” That’s good enough for me! n

Land of the Two Seas “Land of Two Seas – a historic novel and a spy thriller based on Bahrain...,” typed the pretty young lady on her mobile, as the… Book launch got under way at Jashanmal, City Center, on the 19th of February 2016. “Let me tweet this before you sign my copy. Thousands will come to know of your book,” she said with a charming smile. We did not know each other. Yet Anne’s enthusiasm for my book, a thriller set in Bahrain during World War 2, overwhelmed me. In 1940, the year in which my story unfolds, the British India Steam Navigation Company ferried passengers between Bombay and Bahrain, once a week. Due to the absence of deep sea channels leading to the port, the ship berthed some seven miles from Bahrain’s coast. Passengers were offloaded into dhows that finally brought them to Mina Manama – the island’s thriving port at that time. Latest models of American automobiles like Dodge, Plymouth and Cadillac graced the island’s roads alongside the Arabian White Ass, which was still an important mode of transport.

At the very outset of the war, Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the then ruler of Bahrain, had pledged his support to Great Britain and contributed a princely sum of money toward its war effort. This probably earned the island kingdom the wrath of Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator who was spreading his tentacles into North Africa and eyed the Middle East. On 19th October

1940, BAPCO’s oil refinery escapes narrowly as three aircrafts of the Italian Airforce stage a daring attack on Bahrain. Before the reverberations of the bombs that rained from the sky that night could die down, a conspiracy theory – leading to the air raid – had raised its head on the island. The entire Arabian Gulf suddenly finds itself at risk of being drawn into the war. This and other events that occurred in Bahrain during that period, form the backbone of my book, “Land of Two Seas,” which is essentially a fiction. In the four years that I took to write this book, I felt that I had rediscovered this country. The eagerness with which readers have sought this book throughout last year, has provided me with immense satisfaction and has inspired me to write more on the unique island nation that is Bahrain. n

Tai Chi and its Benefits Have you ever heard of “Tai Chi”? Most likely Yes. It is an ancient art of stylised movements, when put together they create the smoothest and most gracious…

Tai Chi also depends on breathing, which makes it a great way to fight stress. It is different from Yoga, but it also requires slow and deep breathing. It is a type of meditative movement that gives you the benefits of both worlds: Physical, and spiritual.

Tai Chi movements are slow and fluid, which helps improving the balance, they also are powerful and continuous which improves the flexibility and muscle strength, with very minimal stress on the joints, which makes it great for all ages. Its effect on the mind is remarkable too, as it needs a huge amount of focus, and it relies on the coordination of the lower and upper body in perfecting the movements. Tai Chi treats the brain itself like the muscle it is, the more you use it, the stronger it gets.

Staying Cool Sweaty old summer is heading right this way and short of picking up sticks and relocating to just south of Siberia‌ There's absolutely nothing we can do about it. So my advice is to start planning ahead of time i.e. right now, to ensure that come July, you'll still look and feel like the coolest kid on the block. BOOM! Probably the most important thing to get right, is your wardrobe. Let's face it - we're ALL going to get a little hot under the collar at some point when that temperature gauge hits the big 5-0. And it's just so hard to be fabulous when you're feeling rivers of sweat running down your back, knowing that it's doing so on full display. Eeek!

Make sure your hotweather wardrobe consists of colours that conceal e.g. blacks and whites, as well as fabrics that breathe, such as lovely linens and cool cottons. Of course anything you put on your face should be similarly light. Keep makeup matte by taking the time to prep with a good primer and set with a spray before stepping out. Pop a packet of blotting papers in your purse to prevent the dreaded summer-time shine. And don't forget the sunscreen. It's the best thing you can wear to ensure that your face doesn't start to resemble that slouchy leather bag slung over your shoulder. Apply generously and reapply throughout the day.

indoors. Even walking outside can become a health hazard, potentially resulting in sunstroke or heat rash - both of which are nothing short of nasty. And then there's the dreaded sunglass fog phenomenon, which usually hits at the same time humidity peaks. Try wiping a tiny dab of shaving foam over the lens as prevention. But most importantly, don't let the extreme heat get you down, and stay cool peeps! n

How F1 helped me fit in on two continents I grew up watching the Formula One with my parents at a very young age. When they announced that they would be moving to the Kingdom of Bahrain‌ I didn’t exactly know what to think at first. Then they told me about the Bahrain International Circuit and I immediately perked up. Not knowing anyone in a foreign country is quite daunting, but when you have a sport to talk about, everything just seems to fall into place.

NASCAR tracks in the world, Bristol Motor Speedway. This is where I have spent hours trying to persuade NASCAR fans to give F1 a chance. Little over 7,000 miles away, at the Bahrain International Circuit, I have spent hours convincing F1 fans to watch NASCAR with the same fervor.

When I first visited Bahrain in April 2013, I nearly wept at the thought of missing the F1 by just two days. However, I could make many friends by simply striking up a conversation. When I moved to the Southern United States in 2014, I had no idea that my F1 knowledge would help me fit in.

Motorsports have always been a part5 of my life. I have been blessed with new friends and family because of F1 and NASCAR. n

NASCAR and F1 are completely different, but living in the south, NASCAR is the obvious choice for the most popular Motorsport. I fell in love with a local who shares my love for F1 racing, but he also loves NASCAR, so we compromised and now we watch both!

As a little girl, I always said that I will one day measure my success by whether I go to a F1 race. Bahrain not only offered me this opportunity, but gave me lifelong friends.

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.

Gum and other diseases

There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. Other research show that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive

gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.

How to prevent it?

Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Through the Lens Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Bahrain-based photographer, Kevin Andrews.

What motivates you to get up in the morning? The thought of freshly brewed coffee and bright sunny Bahrain skies.... although it has been raining more than usual this year

You have traveled a lot of places and took many photographs during your course of work. Which photograph do you most identify yourself with? Great question, I have never thought about that. It's more of a feeling I have while I'm out shooting a location. I have been fortunate enough to travel around the world and observe different cultures. There isn't one in which I felt more drawn to, they are just different... unique...existing perfectly in their own environment. That is what I like to capture, just moments in time from individual places around the world that

Feature normally wouldn't be documented otherwise. That is what leaves me satisfied, a place I can identify with and the memory that I was in a specific place at a specific time, capturing a certain moment. And then to share that with others...I think that's cool.

What does photography mean to you? What first drew you to take photos? Growing up, I never thought of myself as

creative. No one ever told me I was either. But as a teenager, I was gifted an 'antique' 1974 Nikkormat SLR which quickly found its way into a dark drawer. It wasn't for another five years until I brought it back to life in a college photography class. This was the tipping point for me. But it was a decade in transition...from film to digital, I was lost in the mix and with the exception of taking a few shot here and there, really never rejuvenated that passion I had while developing prints in a dark room. Moving to Bahrain in 2013 was a new beginning for me in photography. I had finally hit my comfort zone, truly enjoying every aspect of making an image.

to me....and the end result indicated as much.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Ah the most difficult question for last. Fair enough but almost impossible to answer. I have found Bahrain to be an incredible tranquil place. I feel an overwhelming sense of calm when I am out alone, headphones on, setting up the tripod, waiting for another beautiful

sunset. At mosques and in the souqs, I have met the most interesting and friendly people. Unlike many other countries, I have never had a Bahraini turn me away for a photo...ever. They are some of the most kind and accommodating people that I have ever met, and I am grateful for the time I have had here. Coming back full circle, I think I enjoyed photographing dhows the most. They are just so unique to this part of the Gulf, and really help visualize a personal story about the Bahraini culture that still thrives today. n For more information: web: 500px.com/nukoland-photography nukolandphotography@gmail.com

How important is it for photographers/artists to “connect with their subjects? I think it makes all the difference in the world. I have photographed objects, locations, things, that just weren't exciting

Quality Attracts Quality

Can you describe what a typical day in your job looks like? What I love the most about it is that everyday is different. But normally when I do come in at the hotel, I like to go to the reception and just get a quick update and see if there’s anything urgent I should know about. Then, I like to go at the room service where breakfast is served just to see that everything is up and running. If there’s a big event, I normally walk by there as well to make sure that the day is set up and everything is running smoothly. Once that’s done, I go down to the office and have a quick look at emails, daily reports, etc. In the morning, we have a meeting with the management team and the operation team of the hotel where we go through events for the day and special arrivals, maintenance etc. I also make sure to have time allocated to meet and talk to guests at the lobby.

What motivated you to go into the luxury hospitality industry? I was very much into Economics when I was younger. As a little boy, my grandparents lived in a small village in the West Coast of Norway, which is very picturesque and beautiful. All the cruise

ships come in the summer months – that’s when I saw the captain with his hat, stripes and nice uniform. That’s the job I wanted as a little boy but I then learned that you have to study mechanical engineering to be the captain of the cruise ship which wasn’t my cup of tea. Studying Economics back in Sweden where I grew up, I realized that I wasn’t an office person to sit in an office job 8, 10, 12 hours a day. It kind of all went into place when I went into the hotel business where I could do human resource and marketing – that attracted me.

What do you think sets Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay apart from the other hotels in the region? I think Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay has the legendary service – there’s no doubt. We spend a lot of time training our people: developing and motivating their morale, trying to get them do the little extra things for the guests. That comes from having the right management culture in the building, where there’s actually a feel that the employees are empowered to do it. I would agree that a lot of people try to achieve that and we’re receiving

Feature feedback that Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is quite good in making it happen on a daily basis. The Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay has won a tremendous amount of awards within two years of its opening which is phenomenal. It’s my job now to continue building on that.

At work, what/who puts a smile in your face? One of the things that really, really, puts a smile on my face is when you are able to promote people whom you have previously worked with and mentored. It is a phenomenal feeling and it just makes me very proud.

What advice would you offer to those who are inspired to become successful in the hotel industry? It’s a business where you have to start from the bottom. You have to be willing – no matter what fancy hotel school you went to in the world. When you start, you have to be willing to roll up your sleeves and learn how to do it from the bottom.

What is your favourite place to visit in Bahrain? I loved exploring the island since I got here. One area which I really liked was the Bahrain Farmer’s Market on a Saturday morning. It’s just brilliant to go there and see the liveliness of the vegetables, fruits and products. On top of it, you come home with some of the best vegetables that you have on the island which is extraordinary. I really enjoy that.

What’s next?

Richard Raab

I have always been striving for excellence, which is more of a habit for me rather than an act.

The Avenues is part of the whole Bahrain Bay development. It will draw more foot traffic to the area and we’re looking at what is the potential transportation between The Avenues and the hotel is going to be. We’re also revamping and spicing things up at CUT Lounge by Wolfgang Puck where guests will be able to delight themselves in fine beverages, classic American bites along with live DJ entertainment.

Health

Sounds easy right? With so many “diet, light, sugar and fat free products” available in the market that makes you think they are the healthiest to eat. However, most of these products are filled with artificial ingredients and refined sugars. Instead, stick to wholesome foods with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, unrefined carbohydrates, whole grains, and lean meats with moderate amounts of healthy fats, seeds and nuts.

Summer Bodies, Are You Doing It Right?

Clinical Dietician Diana Nakhle lets Bahrain Confidential in on the Do's and Don'ts...

I

t’s officially spring time! That time of the year where summer bodies are just around the corner. You start to panic because you want to look beach body perfect. Summer time is filled with lifestyle changes, and along with the new habits comes a big concern whether you are on the right healthy track.

What comes first into your mind is to search online for beach body programs, or follow a trendy strict diet plan, or grab any product being advertized as the safest easiest way of weight loss. While we all want perfect bodies, resorting to all these might leave you frustrated with a negative feeling about diet and fat loss as you have a short time to get in shape. First thing you have to do is to look at the situation from a different angle, your path for health and wellbeing and not just changing your body to be ready for summer. Ask yourself; am I nourishing myself well with a variety of food regularly throughout the day? Or am I just following food rules and

88 Bahrain Confidential April 2017

eliminating certain food? By starvation and deprivation, you will disrupt your metabolism and slow your results. Your focus should be on nourishing your body every 3 to 4 hours with balanced, nutritious meals and snacks.

It is so tempting the power media and commercials have over our minds, making us believe that a magic diet pill can give us the body we want without any effort. Don’t be fooled, as these damage your health and miracle pills don’t exist. You will not achieve any result without working hard for it, so start putting your effort into exercise and make that a regular habit. Always seek the help and support of a professional dietitian so that you won’t sabotage your heath for weight loss. Each body is unique in its own way, what worked for others might not be your right option. Remember that you decided to start the change not only for summer or any time phase, but for all year round. It is just the beginning of your lifestyle change. Find a motivation that keeps you going, as it is easy to lose weight, but maintaining the initial weight loss is harder. Once you feel nice and happy about what you are doing, there is no reason you cannot stay there if you’ve been shown the right way! n

Last Word

Driving me around the bend

I

t’s not the bonny Formula 1 drivers that grind my gears it’s the ongoing frenzy that is doughnut-ed around Bahrain.

No, I’m not talking about the constant phone calls that just have to be answered, nor am I talking about that snapchat that has to be taken at that very instant, but, I’m talking, or rather ranting about the incessant need to have 10 children acting as co-pilot to your usual commute. Seriously, is it just myself or is this just complete madness? In the UK you must make sure that any children in the vehicle that you’re driving are in the correct car seat. This is based upon their height or weight until they reach 135 centimeters tall or indeed their 12th birthday, whichever is first. Now, I think some people over here quite frankly need to, well, grow up! I for one have enough of an issue focusing on the road itself whilst driving, as I’m being tailgated, flashed or in fact being leered at, so this notion of an added distraction is quite frankly foreign. First of all, why? It surely cannot be a cultural stance as it’s essentially sacrificing the lives of their children if (heaven forbid) an emergency stop is required.

Has today’s technology got too advanced that children are reverting to a live simulation of the age-old wacky races?

106 Bahrain Confidential April 2017

Secondly, I get annoyed at the mere presence of my partner in the passenger seat never mind the thought of him clambering over me as I attempt to ignore him. So am I missing a track trick? Has today’s technology got too advanced that children are reverting to a live simulation of the age-old wacky races? Penelope Pitstop wouldn’t be impressed, that’s for sure. I’m sure a lot of this has to do with the way us British people have rules and regulations for anything and everything. Genuinely though, I’m just interested as to the logic behind this phenomenon. From a children’s stance I’m sure it is very fun and I can’t actually find any statistics as to whether or not this activity has lead to conflict on the road, but, surely any distraction breeds hazardous conditions? Let’s just leave the bold manoeuvres to the pro’s. Don’t all race at once, but any insights/answers on a postcard please or rather yet… feedback/ comments to my email. n
