I’m your new Editor for Bahrain Confidential and l’d like to take this opportunity to thank former Editor, Melissa Nazareth for her kind words and support. As far as introductions go, I’m Jayne Green (oops, I’ve already mentioned that!) I’ve lived in Bahrain for just over a year now and I can speak shway Arabic. I always have that age-old vendetta with local barista’s about my name, I always reply “It’s Jane with a Y, I’m not a plain Jane y’see”, this is usually accompanied with the typical eye rolling expression of my partner who feels this phrase is somewhat of a slogan for my life. Anyways, since being born and bred into the cold realms of the North East of England I feel that Bahrain has welcomed me and my badly circulated limbs with open arms. I was glad that my expectations and ignorance of a sandpit were sharp dashed on arrival. I love the fact that you can travel from one side of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the other in less than two hours, yet, experience so much. Bahrain Confidential supported me as a reader by revealing some of these golden gems in and around the Island. So, I feel that it’s certainly went full circle and I am excited about being part of this amazing team. Feel free to contact me on any of our social media platforms and I look forward to your feedback/comments. Shukran...!

“And me... Angela!” Hi, I’m Angela the new Editorial Assistant. Coming from a journalism background, I’m very excited to be fulfilling my dream of writing. Bahrain has always been home to me – the rich history along with the skylines and sunsets swept me off my feet when I first came here at the age of nine. It was a whirlwind romance then but I am now back for good to experience the Kingdom with an open heart.

Dragon City The Kingdom’s largest wholesale and retail hub celebrates Chinese New Year.

G

ong Xi Fa Cai! As the Chinese New Year commenced to mark the lunar year, it is a time where Chinese culture shines from almost every part of the world. Rooted in its culture for thousands of years, the popularity of this tradition has grown tremendously since its revival recently. To celebrate this occasion, Dragon City organised a thrilling event, giving shoppers the opportunity to immerse in a unique cultural experience. The celebration just doesn’t stop for Dragon City as they celebrated their first anniversary with an extravagant and exciting range of activities. It definitely was an entertaining and enjoyable moment for everyone. Dragon City brings China to your doorstep through an authentic oriental experience. On top of the visually pleasing aesthetic and Oriental feels of the mall, I was struck by the unrivalled variety of products at the best prices around. The whole mall was festively adorned with a beautiful light display both within the premises as well as outside Dragon City, befitting the spirit of the occasion. Entering the mall certainly felt like an authentic trip to Beijing’s

Forbidden City. The atmosphere was electric and I couldn’t help but feel like I was part of something special. During the event, the ladies who were wearing traditional Chinese attire were interacting with the crowd. The set-up was very stimulating as everywhere you looked was adorned in the colour red which is believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Families were gathered around to participate in this wonderful immersion of culture. A photo booth representing

the Year of the Rooster was also present for visitors to take pictures, indeed making their visit a truly memorable one. Dragon City prides itself in being the first of its kind project in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It includes Dragon Mall, Dragon Apartments, Dining Village, and an allocated area for warehouses. It is also home to more than 787 commercial units, effectively making it the largest wholesale and retail trading centre in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Located South-West of Diyar Al Muharraq, it is strategically located in close proximity to Bahrain’s International Airport, the state-of-the-art Khalifa Bin Salman Port and the Capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, Manama, making it ideal and providing easy access to customers from both the Kingdom and beyond. With that being said, Dragon City proves to be a flagship destination not only for visitors but also for traders and retailers alike. n For more information, call Tel +973 3229 6366

by Mobeena Inam, poet and writer living in Bahrain Maid mania everywhere Yet for me, not one to spare Looking here and searching there Suddenly I spot a pair Loud and clear then comes a voice Rising in the traffic noise “Madame, Madame, how much you pay? When will be my holiday? What’s your nationality? How many in your family?” In disbelief I turn to say: ‘But who are you? And what’ll you do? Are you interviewing me? Or am I interviewing you?’ Unabashed she gives a smile,

Récital 20 Astérium

B

ovet creates some of the most masterfully crafted timepieces out there. The Récital 20 Astérium seamlessly continues the tradition set by the Récital 18 Shooting Star®, reprising the characteristic shaped case to present an unprecedented mechanical display that showcases the volumes and decoration of the timepiece. Moreover, the diptych now formed by these two timepieces takes us on a genuine philosophical journey to the edges of time and space.

The Bovet 1822 technicians opted to map out the stars and constellations visible from the Earth on a translucent blue quartz, on which they are laserengraved before being coated in Super-LumiNova® to create a trueto-life sky. To ensure utmost realism, the highest stars in the sky are depicted at the top of the dome while the lowest stars on the horizon appear on the periphery of the display aperture. The front of the timepiece unveils some new additional indications. The hours are displayed on a 24-hour dial that is positioned beneath the night sky and visible through the translucent blue quartz. The lower left and right-hand sections of the night sky overlook two double hemispheric indicators. On the left, a hemispheric precision moon phase lingers above the equation of the time indicator. For greater accuracy and precision, the Récital 20 Astérium is driven by an annual calendar calculated on a 365.25-day cycle to reflect the real duration of one full terrestrial orbit. On the right, the retrograde minutes are displayed on the periphery of the power reserve and its ten days of autonomy. Finally, the seconds hand is driven by the patented double face flying tourbillon. Despite its complexity, setting this timepiece is as quick and easy as for a timepiece with a simple calendar mechanism. The same applies when determining the position of the stars in the sky. To

do this, simply point the arrow of the sky map hand northwards. Only sixty Astérium® movements will be manufactured across all versions, including requests for unique pieces. Collectors can choose from red gold, white gold or platinum cases, which can be customized by the Manufacture’s artisans in a tradition that has distinguished BOVET 1822 for 195 years. The scent of a free spirit – with L’Insoumis, Lalique reinvents the most masculine of fragrance families, but also the most fundamental, since it originated modern perfumery: the fougères, which blend aromatic freshness with the subtle potency of ambery woods. A perfect balance of the abstract and the figurative – the bottle of L’Insoumis plays on the contrast between streamlined modernism and opulent luxuriance of its motif: an unfurling fern whose stylized curves evoke the lush vegetation of a mysterious forest.

Dylan Blue is the essence of the Versace man today. It’s a fragrance full of character and individuality, an expression of a man’s strength and also his charisma. This perfume is highly distinctive with a fragrant woody aroma and exquisite qualities of natural citrus, bergamot and grapefruit combined with modern hints of fig leaf to give a Mediterranean freshness. Dylan Blue definitely sets off the intense and seductive character of the man wearing it.

My Love Affair with

Cath Kidston O By Jayne Green

ne Christmas at my inlaws I felt myself gravitate towards a set of quirky vintage inspired cutlery and it instantly spiked my inquisitive nature. Strange? Yes. Life altercating? Most definitely! In this fleeting moment I began my love affair towards the brand, Cath Kidston. With the need to know more, I started a quick google search and was in awe of their collection of modern vintage designs. Cath herself founded her first store in 1993, selling ironing board covers and she’s most certainly came a long way since then! They now produce anything and everything composing of four core departments; fashion, accessories, home and kids. All are their very own witty prints and quintessentially British designs.

When I first visited Bahrain in November 2015, I was disappointed to know that my addiction would have to dissolve and I wouldn’t be able to add to my already established collection, much to my partners delight (and wallet) I must add! This could have been a deal breaker as to whether or not I moved to Bahrain long-term, but, as I packed my suitcase adorned with a collection to rival most stores my thoughts of moving to a new country quashed any negative thoughts. I’ve always embraced the romanticist notion that absence only makes the heart grow fonder… or at least I told myself. My addiction was reignited when City Centre Mall opened up its doors to Bahrains first

Feature Cath Kidston store. This officially opened in March 2016, so, as you can imagine I was overwhelmed! A few years ago, I sent a rather cringey email to their inbox pitching to them about expanding their range to feature cat accessories that could be branded ‘CATh KITston’. In fairness they were very polite and eloquent in their response, but, alas, this will not be stocked. I believe that people are becoming more aware about where the products they are buying are sourced. A quick look on their website allowed me to delve further in to their work ethos, and they have a ‘modern slavery act’ which is quite refreshing in

Stepping into one of our stores you immediately know where you are, our distinctive style and welcoming family atmosphere stands us apart from the rest of the high street. - Cath Kidston this day and age. This ensures that their suppliers adhere to the highest standards of ethics and demonstrate safe working conditions. Pop in store or peruse over their website for further info and share the love with friends and family. Everything just screams cosiness but doesn’t degrade on style. All of this and more, in a simplified yet welcoming format – what more could you want? It almost felt like I’d sat down for a pot of tea with an old friend. How very…erm...? British! n

Look 10 years younger

Go Hoop-la

E

veryone from Beyoncé to First Lady Michelle Obama is hot for Hula-Hooping, so why not give it a go?

After 30 minutes you will burn 150 to 250 calories per workout. Complete three times a week for four weeks and you’ll lose 3 to 6 inches all over your body. Yep, muffin top included!

Youth is often associated with power, vibrancy and dynamism. These tips will help you look younger.

Only wear clothes that fit Oversized, baggy, or too tight clothes only make you look like you’re lousy or trying too hard. Wearing clothes that fit you to a T will make you look more polished, and slimmer. Plus, if you know that your clothes look good on you, you instantly feel more confident.

Reduce stress With a high-pressure job, kids to put through college, mortgage and other things to pay; the idea of reducing stress might seem a bit laughable. But, if you don’t take the time to reduce stress now, this could lead to severe anxiety, stroke, and/or heart attacks later on. Another plus of stress management is less worry and frown lines on your face, which makes you, look more attractive.

Meditate Far from being just some new age mumbo-jumbo, meditation has science-backed proof that it’s good for you. If you’ve missed your wallet or forgotten your keys, for the 100th time, its time to close your eyes and say “Om”. Meditation improves your mental clarity, memory, and brain function; bringing down stress levels and keeping you in the present. Bonus: the sense of balance and happiness from meditation keeps you young.

Power Train Power training can improve your posture and help you avoid injury. When you train explosively, the fast twitch-fibers in the body that help build muscle and increase metabolism; and makes you excel in sports are activated. Having a great physique will also work to help you look younger.

Sleep well Sleep allows the body’s storehouse to repair itself, increasing its strength and stamina. Also, go to bed a little hungry. Hitting the sack on a full stomach can slow down your metabolism and negatively interfere with sleep cycles. n

For a good workout, you need to buy a hoop for an adult, which is larger and heavier, therefore, easier to use than the kind made for kids. If you're a newbie, aim for one that's at least 40 inches in diameter and weighs 1 to 2 pounds. Stand inside the hoop with your right foot forward, holding the hoop against your lower back. Keeping your pelvis tucked, shoulders squared, and chest lifted, bend your knees slightly and give the hoop a good counterclockwise spin around your waist, making sure it's level. If this feels awkward, try putting your left foot forward and spinning the hoop clockwise. To keep the hoop moving, shift your weight quickly between your front and back legs, moving your hips backward and forward. If you feel the hoop beginning to drop, stand up straighter and push the front of your hip into the hoop as it comes around. Stand with your feet a bit wider than shoulder-width apart and parallel to each other. Give the hoop a good spin, and rock your hips from side to side so the hoop hits on the sides of your waist. Make sure your abs are tight, with chest and head lifted. The more power you put into each push, the faster the hoop will go! n Best of luck!

s I entered the InterContinental Regency Bahrain I was taken aback by the sheer grandeur of the place. Whilst I was looking up and soaking in my surroundings one of their staff members politely directed my partner and I to the lift. As the lift started to ascend to the Spa InterContinental, situated on the 10th Floor, I was excited albeit a little apprehensive about my massage. Unfortunately, I have been in other establishments where their ‘relaxed’ atmosphere is nothing short of hectic, with a gaggle of voices outside the room. Alas, my concerns were quickly dashed as the doors opened and my senses were awoken with the delightful smell of lemongrass. The smiling receptionists who welcomed my partner and I instantly put me at ease. They advised us of the four treatment rooms (2 couples and 2 singles) and asked us what our preference was. We decided on one of the couples’ rooms. We were then introduced to our masseuses who asked relevant questions about what we wanted to achieve from

our session, alongside querying if there were any specific areas that we would like them to focus on. As we stepped in to the couples massage room I couldn’t help but smile. Rose petals surrounded the delicately furnished room, it was so romantic yet subtle. Our masseuses provided us with a mash-up of two massage techniques to allow optimum results. This was a nice touch as it was evidently bespoke towards our needs and the knots in our backs definitely benefited from this! The whole process was so relaxing and they only use award-winning luxury European brand ‘Bruno Vassari’ alongside a collection of other natural products, such as fruits, seeds, chocolate and yoghurt. No wonder it smells as nice as it feels! They asked minimal yet relevant questions about their pressure without disturbing the ambience. This prompt is important, as I’ve sometimes felt that it’s inappropriate to raise my concern for fear of upsetting the masseuse and just “put up” with their technique.

Once our session was complete we were asked if we wanted to use their steam room or use the attached shower room to freshen up. Afterwards I met their spa manager ‘Lolita Sarengo’ to ask about any offers that they had ongoing. She happily proceeded to tell me that couples can enjoy a 50 minute massage accompanied by a complimentary body scrub throughout the month of February, all for the discounted price of 55bd. Also, why not share the love and purchase one of their gift vouchers as a treat? This also provides you with the added bonus of a further 30% off any treatment. As we were leaving we were offered refreshing detox water and were advised of the importance to hydrate after a massage. InterContinental Spa truly has thought of everything! n For reservations Tel +973 17208355 Open daily 8am to 10pm

Love

People & Life

Aiste A Daubaras shares her insider's knowledge about the food of love.

is in the Gulf the main ingredient of your Valentine's feast... should be your hart, and plenty of it!

I

t is indeed a very rare occurrence, but I do sometimes pity the opposite sex, especially when the gift-giving occasions, such as Valentines day, are rapidly approaching. Imagine what a mammoth task they are facing in figuring out what their Beloved might want to receive, as any self respecting Beloved in question... doesn't know herself what she wants. Or even if she thinks that she knows what might please her that minute, by the time, lets say, the coveted sent is presented in front of her, she would be struggling to hide her disappointment, as she has gone off perfume completely... about five minutes ago ... and now wants a handbag. Our task, dear Ladies, is much easier in that regard. The truism that a way to a man's heart lies through his stomach, is undoubtedly true. And what better occasion to put our witchcraft in good use, than a romantic Valentine's day meal. And in my view, if you do something, do it right, so I decided to seek advice from the very best and the most knowledgeable. Luckily for me, my dear friend Valter Piergiovanni, the Head Chef at the Capital Club Bahrain, is a true wizard of his art and a passionate Italian to boot. And he gladly agreed to share his expertise with me, so I could pass it on to you, my dear Readers.

64 Bahrain Confidential February 2017

Turns out, if you combine a pinch of knowledge with a dash of imagination, it is not that complicated after all. These with a sweet tooth could rummage in their cupboards for some chocolate, which helps to release the 'love chemical', and is very easy to serve (just melt it and make a retro chocolate fondue or sprinkle on some pudding). Or one could just drizzle fresh figs (which, for centuries, were associated with love and fertility) with some honey, as it contains the boron mineral and boosts oestrogen and testosterone levels in our blood. Those with a penchant for the more "greener" diet, would be delighted to learn, that potassium and vitamin B packed avocados or folic acid and mineral rich asparagus can also help to jazz things up without sabotaging your calorie intake. And for the ultimately adventurous ones, Mr. Piergiovanni recommends the classic aphrodisiac- the oyster (or any shellfish, as they are all packed with Zinc, a mineral that significantly increases testosterone levels). But all this scientific gibberish aside, I could not help but second our Chef's opinion, that is not what you cook rather than how you cook, that matters. Having been cooking for 38 years, he says he always 'cooks every single dish with passion and love, and that's the only way to make the moment memorable and your loved one happy". In other words,

And some 'insider information'... of what Mr. Piergovanni has up his sleeve for his Beloved: a simple menu but cooked with love. Oh, lucky her... Starter: Lobster Ceviche Elegantly presented steamed lobster tail with clarified butter for dipping. Tossed with lime juice, shallot, jalapeĂąo and cilantro marinade. Main course: Sailor-Style Mussels A light dish of mussels cooked in briny, aromatic broth flavoured with shallots, leeks, garlic and wine, served with aioli toasted bread. Dessert: No-Bake ChocolateNutella "Cheesecake" A lovely layered dessert (a base of Oreo crumbles, topped with Nutella and chocolate cream cheese and garnished with some whipped cream, more crushed Oreos and toasted hazelnuts) can be any chocolate lover's fantasy. n

Breakfast at the Fort Shakshuka, Balaleet, Sautéed Potatoes, Zinjibari, Kebab, Mahyawa, Fool and Lobia served with Khaboos!... The array of food on the wooden tray indeed looked like a meal fit for a king. Farid, the friendly young man from Comilla in Bangladesh, did not mind explaining to me the various Middle-Eastern recipes that he had grown so accustomed to, while serving diners at the restaurant inside Riffa Fort. “Shakshuka is a scramble of tomato, eggs and chilli; Balaleet is Vermicelli with egg, Mahyawa is prepared out of dried fish….,” he went on eagerly. As he spoke, Arabic music drifted in from the replica of an archaic radio, complete with knobs and dials. Enclosed by thick sand-stone walls dating back to the early 19th century on three sides and a glass façade towards the courtyard, the restaurant transported us back to a time when the place served as the residence of Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh, the then ruler of Bahrain. Outside, a sprawling, glassbalustraded wooden porch, projected from the rocky cliff overlooking Hunainiyah valley. It provided a brilliant panoramic view of the settlements below to those who had braved the chilly winter breeze for a breakfast in the open. The crenelated watchtower and outer wall of the fort, from behind which archers once scanned the countryside for invaders, seemed to stand guard over them.

Strolling through the maze of rooms, I and Mita could not help but admire the skilful planning of the fort that had enabled the housing of, both, the Emir’s army and his family within the same complex.

68 Bahrain Confidential February 2017

One of the rooms there had been the birthplace of Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, the ruler of Bahrain between 1869 and 1932. The still functional teakwood doors with intricately carved astragals, as also the wooden gargoyles in perfect working condition, spoke volumes of the effort that had gone into the upkeep of the structure, nearly 200 years after it served as the seat of governance of Bahrain. An ultramodern museum inside the fort premises took us on a journey into the kingdom’s past through videos, photographs and archaic documents. The treaty of friendship, which was signed inside the fort by Bahrain and Britain in 1820, was displayed on its walls. So were some of the weapons in use at the time and ornaments belonging to queens of that era. My visit to the place, one Friday morning last month, turned out to be a very fulfilling experience. Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Fort, where two of Bahrain’s rulers once lived, had succeeded in bringing to life a significant period in the history of the kingdom. n

The Land of Many Cultures Before being offered the chance to move to Bahrain with my work, I must confess I knew very little about the country... I knew of its existence and unlike many of my friends, I had a pretty good idea of where it was in the world. As most people would do when thinking of living in another country, I did some research; the internet can be a wonderful thing. I discovered on that famous website that has become a verb in our language, Google, the name Bahrain means ‘two seas.’ The exact reason for the name remains in dispute; whether it refers to the bays east and west, or the seas north and south, or even the fresh and salt waters, has probably been lost in the mists of time. But it was none of this that attracted my attention when I first arrived here, just over three years ago. My wife and I spent the first few weeks marvelling over the mix of people on the island. We had never seen so many nationalities in one place before. Although the United Kingdom supposedly has a multicultural society, it isn’t the same as here in Bahrain; ethnic groups tend to stay in groups and there are many areas of the UK where there are few people from outside of the country. Not so in Bahrain. Wherever you go, people from all over the world mingle with each other and this is where the rest of the planet should take note; we all get along – well, most of the time anyway. This prompted a post on Facebook at the end of last year;

Soon I decided to acquire the skills required for me to give my child the education he needed, while following this wonderful Montessori approach.

Lessons in general cover these subjects: Practical life, Science, Math, History, Language, Botany, Geology, Zoology, Geography, Sensorial and Ecology. What made this experience special is that I was teaching my son whatever I was learning and this made things much more fun and a lot easier. Chanelmama n

New Year’s Party Guests had fun celebrating the new year at Klub 360.

My mom was a teacher and I also worked as a one for a year. I was always drawn to playful learning and to always following the child - not the opposite. After some research, I decided to follow the Montessori pedagogy which is an educational approach developed by Italian physician Maria Montessori. This takes the child out of the traditional teaching system and puts him in a completely different environment, where he is the master of his destiny. He has all the freedom he needs to thrive and become a responsible, creative human being, armed with highly developed problem solving skills.

started an incredible journey that lasted a year and was rewarded with a Montessori teaching certificate.

However, I knew that I wouldn’t be sending him to preschool anytime soon. As a kid, I skipped preschool all together and started going to school at the age of six like most kids in my country. All I wanted was to keep my son with me and nurture him with all the love I had to offer until I felt he was ready for school. Soon I realized that my love wasn’t enough; as any toddler, he needed to learn new things, explore and test his limits.

Actions Speak Louder than Words Bahrain Confidential

explores the mind of street artist ‘Huvil’ What inspires you as an artist? The traditional part of my country, it is so beautiful and I feel that I fully immerse myself in my culture. There’s a great sense of pride.

Where did your passion of street art evolve from? I always wanted to produce art on a large scale, much more than an A4 piece of paper. It all started from my bedroom when I used a pencil to sketch on the wall.

Facebook or Instagram? Instagram – a picture can speak a thousand words.

What is your advice to anyone wanting to pursue street art? If you want to start always start with an idea, don't think of street art as the way of income at the beginning of your journey. Always try to be unique at your individual style ... make it a way of delivering a message to the people whilst also displaying its positivity

What is your motivation to get up on a morning? To produce better art and come up with new ideas that evolves my artistic outlook.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite place? Why? I enjoy Block 338 in Adliya as it's a place filled with a variety of events whilst also being a great place to socialise. n Huvil can be contacted Huvil.art@gmail.com @huvil

Dreams in Colour

Murals Make an imprint on your heart not just your home.

I

am a mother of two (Arthur aged 3 and Eirlys aged 4), full-time teacher, and I design and paint custom murals. Currently

Painting a mural for a client is a project that involves a lot of discussion and trust. After all, the wall can’t be exchanged! living in Al Khobar, I travel back and forth across the causeway regularly to make the most of what Bahrain has to offer and to visit my parents who work there. Starting up Dreams in Colour Murals happened on a bit of whim. I was living in Dubai, home on maternity leave, and

wanted to start up something all of my own. Painting canvases or doing pencil drawings as a business just didn’t seem to appeal. So I landed on the murals: creative, a bit quirky and so much fun! I was lucky to have a network of mums as an advertising platform and commissions started to come in regularly. Word of mouth led to some different and more challenging jobs, including a pamper salon in a children’s soft play centre. Painting a mural for a client is a project that involves a lot of discussion and trust. After all, the wall can’t be exchanged! I spend a while with the client looking at images (pinterest is a fantastic tool) and discussing what they have in mind. Then I begin sketching for them; sending sketches back and forwards, until we have an agreed design. Finally painting can start! I work using a variety of paints, as different styles of painting require different texture and opacity. Different wall surfaces can also pose a challenge and require a different consistency of paint to be made up. Putting the first paint stroke on the wall is one of my favourite parts of a project. The wall is no longer clean, the paint can’t be rubbed out or changed and there is no going back! I also love the way a mural completely transforms a space. Murals are a strange art choice. They are

uniquely permanent (you can’t move them or take them down easily) and temporary at the same time (if you move home the mural is lost). People are often put off by the temporary nature of murals. Many of us, especially here in the Middle East, live transitory lives and our homes are often short-term. Murals cannot be put into the shipping container! However, I feel that this is part of the magic and sensation of murals. They are a little impractical and fanciful but so extraordinary and beautiful. n Lydia Rose Morgan Dreams in Colour Murals @dreamsincolourmurals facebook.com/dreamsincolourmurals behance.net/talemorgan2da9

Here is

Cairo

Listen with your heart to the voice of nostalgia and leave yourself back to the past.

A

hmed Emam is a Bahrain-based Egyptian visual artist who participated at the 43rd Bahrain Annual Fine Arts Exhibition. He received a BA degree in Fine Arts with a major in printmaking and pre-master’s degree in 2006 from Fine Arts from Cairo, Egypt. Since early 2004, Ahmed is working as an artist, graphic designer, interior designer and art director. He has won awards and acquisitions in Japan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Ahmed’s artworks seek to evoke ideas of loss, memory and nostalgia. He is born and raised in Cairo, the capital of Egypt. The busy city with its rich heritage and multiculture facets inspired him as an artist to explore the world around him and train his imagination to aspire to the undefined.

76 Bahrain Confidential February 2017

Entitled “Here is Cairo”, the key elements of his art installation are nostalgia, sound, eye of providence, globe, pyramids and infinity. “I am innately very nostalgic. I have always been fascinated with memory, nostalgia and sentiment embodied in certain things. The way people feel compelled to take photos, listen to sound the way tangible things contribute to our sense of identity throughout our lives”. Ahmed believes that personal subjective histories are not recorded in the same way that the history of countries are in history books; these unspoken histories exist in memories of others and the physical traces of their lives on the spaces and objects around them. Spaces and objects embody a beauty in the marks of time passing. “My artworks explore the way these tangible artifacts or emotional experiences of memory can intimately personify our identities”. By creating this artwork, Ahmed seeks to illicit a conversation with his viewer about desire for preservation of self-identity. Here is Cairo explores the magic of heritage in a new contemporary vision while giving ‘rebirth’ to old and traditional icons. Through his artwork, he tries to bring to life the beauty of old times, the depth of memorable images in a modern and unique vision. n For more information: Tel: +973 1729 9831 Email: Ahmed.Emam@culture.gov.bh

Exploring the mind of Bahraini Designer,

Khaleda Rajab

S

he considered making a career of it while studying her bachelor’s degree in Business at the University of Suffolk Boston.

Upon returning to Bahrain, she decided to take her passion seriously and took the first step of designing for fierce women who wouldn't leave the house without ensuring that their outfit would make a statement. Fast forward, a couple of years later, Khaleda opened her very own exclusive boutique aptly named ‘Khaleda Rajab Haute Couture’. One thing that has always remained paramount is that she wanted to appeal to the masses; she accomplishes this by creating pieces to suit every taste and budget. The designer took herself to new heights by also manufacturing her own textile and pattern on certain fabrics. Never a lady to sit still, she has also collaborated with other designers for her launch of sunglasses

Feature What inspires you as a designer? I get inspired from my surroundings. It's hard to explain, inspiration happens when I least expect it. I could be sipping on my morning coffee and suddenly there it happens from a ray of light or a structure that just simply catches my eye.

If you had to choose 3 things to take with you to a desert island, what would they be and why? Hmm, tricky question but I'll manage with 3 items: Water, sunblock and a backpack filled with clothes

Facebook or Instagram? Both, however I am more active on my Instagram account @khaledarajab

Name something that you are proud of? Why? I'm proud that I have achieved two brands in my business plan so far. I collaborated with two of my dream designer houses, Linda Farrow and Mawi Jewellery who are both based in the U.K. I always push myself and I have achieved everything that I have set out to.

Kiehl’s face wash Charlotte Tilbury face cream Benefit mascara Lip tint by Benefit

What is your motivation to get up on a morning? To start a new day everyday … that is the best feeling I get when I wake up everyday. Whether it's bad or beautiful, it’s no regret because I'm blessed with having days like these.

One thing that has always remained paramount is that she wanted to appeal to the masses; she accomplishes this by creating pieces to suit every taste and budget.

What defines you as a designer compared to others? I always try to be different. I don't usually buy trends and wear them accordingly to how they are styled. I always like to put my own personal sense of style on everything. What's next for this aspiring fashionista? Only time will tell, but either way we're sure that she will blow us away! n

Just one more

Page… What was your inspiration for your latest published novel?

At the age of eleven, Dilara Nagib was writing. By fourteen, she was the Deputy Editor of her school’s magazine club. Fifteen, and she had expanded the journalism experience by starting an internship. Sixteen, and she had completed her debut novella It Stung and I Laughed.

Inspiration stemmed from various books I had read; The Silence of the Lambs, Divergent, and Me Before You all had massive impacts on the creation of It Stung and I Laughed – in different ways, but equally as important. I wanted to write something unique and unexpected, something that might perhaps shock people. That’s the stark beauty of words, I find: from the most trivial matter to the most significant plot device, anything and everything happens just under your fingertips. It’s all on you.

What has been the biggest challenge that you have faced? Perfectionism. Whether it was my writing style, the characters, or even the storyline itself – I must’ve rewritten the thing at least seventy times. There was that, and also the fact that people didn’t believe I was capable of being a published author – mostly due to my age. But as I progressed in my writing, I came to learn that I am my biggest enemy. It doesn’t concern me what other people think I can and can’t do. I wanted to write a book? I wrote a book.

Do you plan on pursuing writing as a career? This is available to purchase at www.amazon.com, authorhouse.com and barnesandnoble.com

80 Bahrain Confidential February 2017

Writing is not a secure career choice unless you’ve sold millions like J.K. Rowling. Things might not work out.

Things might. My life would probably be better had I decided that I wanted to be an engineer or a doctor. When writing full-time, there is a lack of stability and an abundance of uncertainty – which I love. I love not knowing what’s about to happen; I love not knowing what I’m going to do, or who I might meet. I love writing. And I can’t wait to pursue it.

Have you got any upcoming projects? If so, what? Like most kids my age, I’m currently preoccupied with school. At the end of this year, I’ll be sitting my GCSEs, and until then, I might write from time to time – but nothing huge until the summer break. I’ve been considering the likelihood of a second book.

How have you organised yourself throughout the creation of your book? That’s easy: I haven’t. I’ve been making things up as I go along. Probably not the most tactful approach. There were days where I was writing from eleven in the morning to four o’clock the next morning, and days where I didn’t even want to look at my laptop let alone touch it. Unfortunately, my organisation heavily depended on my mood.

What is your favourite book? No clue. There are so many great reads out there. I remember reading the first book from Darren Shan’s Cirque du Freak series for school when I was eleven. I finished all twelve books in eight days. As far as favourites go, Shan’s spider story was a legend. (Quite ironically, I have arachnophobia.) n

Dazzling NYE performance from acclaimed RnB artist Mýa

ome of you may have had the opportunity to party into the New Year with Mýa who performed at Ibrida, situated inside the Ramee Grand Hotel, Seef District. Being a personal fan of her work since her release of “Case of the Ex”, I was disappointed that I was unable to attend, as I had to return to the UK for the festive period. Mýa’s latest album ‘Smoove Jones’ has just been nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Album of 2016. This is especially exciting for her and her team, because she self funded it, executive produced it and released it through her own label Planet 9. This is her 12th overall project release and 8th independent project, not just a pretty face! Talking about her experience in Bahrain, Mýa warmly replayed her stay in the Ramee Grand Hotel where she indulged in several vegan options from their ground floor breakfast buffet remarking that it is “Always delightful for a vegan traveller!” She continued to explain how the facilities in Ramee Grand allowed her to unwind “I then made my way to the outdoor pool & hot tub for a bit of sunshine and R&R (rest and relaxation) to help me recover from the long flight from Australia.” The following day, December 31st, the day of excitement preparing for Ibrida's New Year's Eve bash with DJ John Dahlback, who had traveled all the way from Sweden!

was

performing and counting down to the second of new beginnings was so awesome! I hung out and partied with the DJs and the crowd all night until Ibrida closed. The next day, Mýa took full advantage of the hotel's gym & spa to start the New Year off right. “I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to experience more of the culture and shopping of course!" n … Us too!

he new Volvo S90 is Volvo Cars’ entry ticket to the premium sedan club and marks a giant step forward for Volvo Cars. The Swedish car maker is better known for its SUV’s and estates, but with the launch of the S90, Volvo is clearly intent on shaking up the premium sedan segment with its distinctive executive class sedan. Equipped with a host of new technologies ranging from cutting edge safety to cloudbased apps and services, the S90 is further proof of the Swedish brand’s continuing transformation. The S90 is Volvo’s new premium 4-door, 5-seat flagship sedan. Volvo is clearly intent on shaking up the premium sedan segment with its distinctive executive class sedan.

President & CEO, Volvo Car Group Håkan Samuelsson believes that with the launch of the XC90, they made a clear statement of intent. “We are now clearly and firmly in the game. With USD11 billion of investment over the past five years, we have not only reimagined what Volvo cards can be – we are now delivering on our promise of a resurgent and relevant Volvo Cars brand.” The new Volvo S90 comes equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot assist. The system gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to motorway speeds of around 130km/h and no longer needs to follow another car. Pilot assist is another step towards full autonomous drive – a key innovation area for Volvo.

Car News New Safety Function The S90 also introduces a world first function to City Safety – large animal detection – a system capable of detecting large animals such as elk, horses or moose, night or day. The technology offers an intuitive warning and brake support to help avoid a collision. The S90 also benefited from Volvo Cars’ recent investment in a highly advanced chassis simulator. The S90 will also come with a clean powerful T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain and one of the most luxuriously appointed interiors and connected infotainment systems in the large sedan segment. n For more information or to book a test drive, visit Motorcity showrooms in Sitra or call 17736222 or visit motorcity.com.bh

Leo (23 July – 22 August) – Artistic and creative talents, their development are likely focus of this period. Several aspects of life require your active presence so you might feel drained often. Virgo (23 August – 22 September) - The desire to pursue higher education or advanced training is stimulated, as is the urge to speculate, take risks and be more daring. You become more outgoing and assertive when travelling abroad, or dealing with those of a different race or culture.

would good for you to take up a creative hobby or go somewhere new to relax. You need to keep patience and tackle situations with your intellect and tact. Use your intuitive abilities, increase your spiritual awareness, investigate dreams and the occult.

Libra (23 September – 22 October) - You can use or develop skills to make you more independent in financial and other ways. Increased determination and willpower make you more demanding and critical. Romance through a chance encounter, or a sudden infatuation is very much a possibility.

Taurus (20 April – 20 May) Creative juices flow and romantic adventures move into the real world. Artistic energies can be grounded, for you are imaginative and even inspired. However, restrain your physical aggression and beware the consequences of overindulgence and risky adventures. Overworking your brain would only lead to exhaustion.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) - You should experience the highest inspirations, as well as the kind of dumb luck that comes from just being in the right place at the right time. The magic of illusion and imagination, enhanced spirituality, or investigating the paranormal can be enjoyable.

Gemini (21 May – 20 June) - Your

mental processes are energized. Filled with many new ideas, you have an urge to read more, gather all kinds of information and learn new things. You really need to communicate, as planning projects, attending meetings, running errands and taking short trips occupy all of your time.

Cancer (21 June – 22 July) -

This is a favourable period -- not just for the potential success of your efforts, but because they are likely to produce meaningful, long-lasting accomplishments. It is an auspicious time to initiate projects geared towards bringing benefits at a later time in your life.

Last Word

I

remember perusing the glossy pages of luxury lifestyle magazines including BC, as a high school girl. How I wanted to be a columnist! Getting paid to do what I love – writing – seemed to be the best thing in the world. I decided I would write for a living once I graduated; and then, life happened.

Destiny’s Child As children we are not afraid to dream. We don’t let ‘being realistic’ get in the way of listening to our hearts. I too was determined to pursue a career in writing, even though ‘for someone born in a middle class family this isn’t the most ideal choice.’ After all, ‘careers in the arts don’t pay bills like those in medicine or finance do.’ But over time I changed my mind and eventually opted for the safer choice; I went on to getting my degree in economics and accountancy after which I pursued my Masters in Business Administration, specialising in Marketing, only to wind up, six years later, as the Editorial Assistant of a lifestyle magazine – destiny has it’s ways!

Most adults would advise taking up subjects that ‘guarantee high paying jobs’ not realising that if a child pursues a degree in something she or he doesn’t have acumen for, she or he wont do well anyway. Isn’t it better to achieve excellence in a field that pays you a little lesser than some others rather than to wallow in mediocrity for a few extra bucks?

After all, ‘careers in the arts don’t pay bills like those in medicine or finance do.’ In addition to encouraging children to pursue what they are genuinely good at, it’s important to work toward establishing a culture where creative fields are supported: buy that inspired painting by a local artist instead of picking one from an organised retail store! Gift your children books written by local authors instead of gadgets by tech multinationals! Develop a taste for music by homegrown bands and cheer for them at gigs – if you’re a music lover, it’s not that difficult. One of the main reasons why careers in the arts are not encouraged as much as those in other fields is because it is challenging, if not impossible, to rake in the moolah. This needs to change. If you don’t have a New Year’s resolution already, here’s one you could use. Follow your he’art’! Why chase someone else’s dreams when you were born with your own? Like Master Oogway from the Kung Fu Panda movie said, we often find our destiny on the path that we choose to avoid it. n
