Bu Maher Fort Want to discover more about Bahrain’s interesting pearling history? The Bu Maher Fort Visitor’s Center is the starting point to discovering more about that!

uilt in 1840, Bu Maher Fort is steeped in seafaring and pearling history. The fort forms the first stop in the historical pearling path having once served as the main fishing harbor and gateway to and from the sea.In 2012, the fort was identified as part of the Bahrain pearling trail, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The center contains a three-dimensional display that guides the viewer though the history of the path and the houses which formed it from the early beginnings to the main pearling traders. The fort was constructed in 1840 although its origins likely come from a Portuguese fortification from the 16th century. An analysis of artefacts from the fort by an excavation team from Oxford Brookes University have suggested the site may have been first occupied from the Ummayad or early Abbasid era.
The fort was constructed in 1840 although its origins likely come from a Portuguese fortification from the 16th century.
There was also evidence of the site periodically being submerged underwater. The rectangular fort with four circular towers was built by Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and served as a sister fort to Arad Fort, guarding the passageway of Muharraq Bay. In 1868, the fort was destroyed by British warships intervening in the Qatari–Bahraini War. The visitor’s center can be accessed via the sea by boats that depart from Bahrain’s National Museum harbor and a pedestrian bridge in Muharraq.n

Art
Odd Art Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Dana Baqer, a Bahrain-based artist creating trippy and attention-grabbing digital artworks posted on Instagram. In this conversation, we talk about her creative process, inspiration, and advice for aspiring artists.
12 Bahrain Confidential January 2022
Art
W
ho are you and what motivated you to get into art? I’m Dana, just a regular 19-yearold with a big passion for art. Growing up, I’ve always been involved in creative processes, may it be music, painting, photography, orliterature. However, for the past year, my focus was on digital art. The main motivating factor that got me into art is knowing how it works. Something about taking a fragment of your imagination then creating something visible is fascinating to me. Can you describe your artistic process? I guess my artistic process starts off with an idea; even one that’s vague. I gather my references, and just start creating. It doesn’t always turn out the way I envision it to be at first, but I keep at it and layer whatever feels right. It’s mostly just impromptu work where the brainstorming happens during the process, instead of before. What themes are you exploring? The pieces I make are definitely odd and none of them really has a theme with the style I have. Nevertheless, I would say that I am drawn to exploring the ‘unusuality’ of people. If we’re talking about art movement though, I would definitely love to incorporate surrealism in my future pieces. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw my inspiration from other artists. Seeing the art that they put out and how dedicated they are to their work always get me going. Inspiration never really has a home; it could come from anywhere at any time without even knowing it. What does art mean to you? Art, to me, is, quite frankly speaking, everything. From the music we play in our cars, to the buildings we see outside – the world is made up of what used to only be in the imagination of man – but is now right in front of us. To be human means art. What advice would you say to aspiring artists? Keep going. It’s a struggle for many to consistentlybe involved and producing art, trust me, I’ve been there, and I still am sometimes. But if art is something you really want to build for yourself and your career, then I’d suggest to find a motivating factor and stick with it. n

Local band
releases their first single on over a year!
14 Bahrain Confidential January 2022
Feature
B
ahrain-based band, “Do You Really Like It”, announce their much anticipated latest single “Are You Lost”, the first in over a year.
Playing together since 2017 and released their first EP in the same year, the band has gone to be featured in various articles, shows, podcasts and more, cementing their already memorable mark on the Bahraini music scene, as well as transcending across the region. The band consists of Abdulla Mahmood, Debbi Francisco, and Sean Fernandes.
Lockdown has really given us the opportunity to explore new sounds, and experiment a little more with the music we want to put out.
Frontman and lead guitarist, Abdulla Mahmood announced their latest since “Long Distance” stating how the pandemic had really allowed the group to focus and take their time when recording their music. He states, “Our last since was released well over a year ago, and we felt that I really epitomised what we were all going through at the time, in fact, what the world was going through. It was at the start of the first lockdown, and everything felt like it was a “long distance”, whether it was with family or friends, or even your place of work with your colleagues. I felt like we were successful in allowing our listeners to interpret the song the way they wanted to”.
Since the start of the pandemic and the release of their last single, the band continued to work on their music, focusing on recording new songs and material in what hopes to be their new album. Speaking on the new album, Abdulla continued to touch upon their new direction, saying “Lockdown has really given us the opportunity to explore new sounds, and experiment a little more with the music we want to put out. We hope that our fans, followers and listeners will enjoy what we have in store”. The band had also hinted on some key surprises and changes in the group, claiming to introduce some new faces, playing a huge role in the new direction, and style of music they are heading towards. “Do You Really Like It” announced that they will be coming back to their live shows, which have grown to be quite “electric, memorable and unlike any band you have seen in the local music scene”, says Abdulla Mahmood, with more announcement relating to that coming soon, which can be found on their website, or social media. Their music can be found on all streaming platforms, and on their website. n

Hungry for More Interview with Chef Sara Aqel of Fi’lia Dubai.
16 Bahrain Confidential January 2022
Feature
W
e recently had the chance to sit down with Chef Sara Aqel, one of the leading young talents on Dubai’s food scene. Sara is the 25-year-old chef de cuisine of Fi’lia, the first female-led restaurant in Dubai. Tell us a bit about yourself. My name is Sara Aqel. I am a Palestinian but I grew up in Amman, Jordan. I studied culinary arts and worked in the industry at a young age. I trained under Chef Massimo Bottura and also worked at Burj Al Arab, Four Seasons Hotel Amman and in Hong Kong. I recently opened Fi’lia in here in Dubai.
It’s not about creating hundreds of textures and putting it on a plate, it’s about creating a relationship between the guest and the dish. Can you shed some light on your role atFi’lia and what you aim to bring to the table? Fi’lia is aMediterranean-Italian conceptwhich is also the first female-led restaurant in the region. What I do in Fi’lia is create a menu that is inspired by everyone that I have worked with. How was the experience of opening Fi’lia? It was great! I believe that there are no good or bad openings, honestly. It’s always full of challenges, good times, and laughter which make the experience great. Moreover, I had all the support that I needed from the
management and my team. I also fit into the place and the concept of Fi’lia very easily; it was meant to be. How do you make your dishes special? Mother nature is the true artist in my dishes. Most of our dishes in Fi’lia are extremely simple – you just need to get the right quality of the ingredients and put them all together. We are not changing the true art; we’re just framing it in a nice way. It’s not about creating hundreds of textures and putting it on a plate, it’s about creating a relationship between the guest and the dish. If one of our readers were to come here tomorrow to have dinner, what would you recommend? The Feta Al Forno which is oven baked feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, sourdough toasted bread. For the pasta, the Spaghetti al Pomodoro, and Pappardelle Al Ragu with braised veal ossobuco, tomato, orange gremolata and pecorino. As for dessert, the Pavlova and the Fi’liamisu. Is there any advice that you’d give to other aspiring chefs out there? Always be hungry for more; there’s never a point where you’re done. Whatever accomplishment you do, don’t say “I’ve got here, I’m done”. Also, don’t try to be the “next” thing. I think one of the reasons I’m here is because they saw my passion and trusted me. The world cannot resist authenticity. Do you have a particular motto or saying that you live by? Food is an expression of who we are. n

Meet the New Director of Food & Beverage at
The Royal Golf Club! Bahrain Confidential speaks with The Royal Golf Club’s newly appointed Director of Food & Beverage, Sandeep Pandey.
A
fter 16 years of experience in hospitality in the UAE, Sandeep Panday has decided to start his new journey and explore another GCC country – Bahrain. He assumed his position as Director of Food & Beverage at The Royal Golf Club in November 2021. Congratulations on your recent appointment. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? Thank you very much; I am extremely excited to take this role outside of the UAE. As Bahrain is very new to me, understanding the market, learning a new culture, and taking steps to make The Royal Golf Club a social hub are some things I am looking forward to. What are some of the trends you see impacting the hospitality industry? The hospitality industry has gone through a rough patch last 2-3 years for obvious reasons. However, there is a strong sign of V curve recovery. People have started going out, events are getting good attraction. Customers have become very health cautious. I see that plant base, vegan, keto and healthy food with calorie intake description is a new trend. How will you evolve the hotel’s already impressive F&B offerings? I would focus on creating an experience rather
18 Bahrain Confidential January 2022
than just focus around food & service. As I believe every hotel and restaurant has food & beverage, what matters is who provides an overall memorable experience. Are there any exciting news that you would like to share with our readers? What can we expect at the Royal Golf Club? Being new to Bahrain, it will be too early to share any plans, however, I believe in creating an experience and will focus on giving multiple reasons for golfers and non-golfers to use The Royal Golf Club F&B outlets as their social hub. Is there a motto/saying that you live by? Professionally: WIG- “Widely Important Goal” has been my 18 years of hospitality motto. Each decision made is evaluated by its impact on the three pillars of hospitality: 1. Associates 2. Guests 3. Owners Personally: “Whatever happens, I will be in my best mood”. n

Passion for Creativity Zeynep Oden Agagil
N
ot long ago, Zeynep Oden Agagil has joined Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor as the Director of Sales and Marketing. With over two decades of experience, she will help oversee the transformation of the property to Raffles Al Areen Palace Bahrain. We recently had the chance to talk to her to know her better… What made you want to pursue a career in marketing? From as early as I can remember, I have been surrounded by creativity and visual art. My mother is an artist, and my childhood memories are infused with color, creativity and interpretation. This inspiration cultivated a need and desire to constantly seek fresh and innovative ways of communicating my thoughts. This assisted my career enormously as it came natural to me to think outside the box and come up with well-thought-out creative ideas for campaigns. How do you find balance between your professional and personal life? I love what I do, and I enjoy every single day meeting amazing people in a culturally diverse environment. There is no single day that I would ask for a different life.
20 Bahrain Confidential January 2022
Being a mum three years back changed the way I interpret time. It is so important for me that every single minute that I am away from my daughter must be worth spent. Can you recommend a must-try experience when visiting Bahrain? Bahrain is so welcoming and so inspiring. I certainly recommend visiting the three UNESCO World Heritage sites here in the Kingdom of Bahrain because of their cultural value. Qal’at al-Bahrain (Ancient Harbour and Capital of Dilmun), Pearling Trail and Dilmun Burial Mounds. Walking in the streets of Muharraq is a must-do to experience to see how the traditional architecture meets contemporary. What’s something you can never live without? Passion and positivity. Favorite book: I love to read on psychology and philosophy novels, as well as biographies. Some of my favorite authors are Alain de Botton, Kursat Basar, Dogan Cuceloglu. A saying/motto that you live by: “Be the reason someone smiles today”. n
