Going Out

Be Our Guest Bahrain Confidential chatted with the region’s premier golf and leisure destination’s executive chef about what makes them stand out.

E

xecutive Chef Paul Gindra, who hails from Durban South Africa has been working at the Royal Golf Club for three years now. Paul has a vast experience by being in the hospitality industry for 17 years. His award-winning career spans several continents including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Namibia, South Africa and Ireland. He was formerly overseeing the openings of hotels in different countries, focusing on the successful launch of their restaurants.

Having been trained in the Southampton City College for three years in the UK, Paul has gained formal knowledge regarding the art and science of culinary preparation. He has also won numerous notable awards during his career including being the national winner of 2008 MLA Black Box Culinary Challenge, and winning gold, silver and bronze medals in the 2008 Culinary Olympics in Germany. However, this success wasn’t handed to Paul in a silver platter. He started from a humble beginning of being a dishwasher and then a waiter at the De Vere Hotels

in UK. His eureka moment happened when he saw the food they’re serving in comparison to the simplistic recipes in Durban. “It was a saffron potato and truffle terrine and it was an art of itself”. After that, he begged the general manager every day for a few months to train him. He believes that passion is a must along with long hours of working hard even if it meant having no social life. In order to give back, Paul molds and excels people’s culinary portfolios essentially developing them. “Something special can be done”, he said. He wants to give opportunities for them to excel in international standards which in return, gives him a great sense of achievement as well. Whether you’re looking for a traditional roast or just an ice cold signature blend of cappuccinos, the Royal Golf Club has a dining experience just for you. The Links Restaurant stands out and is successful as it is accessible to everyone. It is still the best international restaurant for three years running. Paul has taken over as

Guests will be more relaxed while adoring a spectacular golf course view and a live performance of contemporary and jazz blues from Ahmed Al Qasim. n For info and reservation, call Tel. +973 1775 0777

he use of bronze has a long and renowned nautical his- tory. For centuries, ships have relied on this metal alloy for its exceptional strength and resistance to rust and erosion. Even when it is in constant contact with salt water, bronze shows hardly any signs of corrosion, making it an excellent choice for the case of the new adventurous Eterna KonTiki Bronze Manufacture Limited Edition.

Iconic design In celebration of this important anniversary, the new Eterna KonTiki Bronze Manufacture Limited Edition continues the magnificent story of the KonTiki adventure with a bold and highly recognizable design. Triangular luminescent hour markers are contrasted against a jet-black, granite-patterned dial that provides excellent legibility, while a unidirectional rotating bezel frames the dial with a decompression gauge. This decompression function provides divers with a useful backup to their diving computers as it indicates how long they can stay under water without needing to decompress. With a water-resistance of 200 metres, the Eterna KonTiki Bronze Manufacture is ready for adventures both on the surface of the water and at the depths of the ocean. The diving style has not been neglected either, as the timepiece is fitted with a waterresistant leather strap that is durable and comfortable and whose dark brown colour brings out the warmth of the bronze case. This special collection dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the KonTiki expedition is limited to 300 pieces and is the perfect partner for today’s explorers who need a sty- lish timepiece that they can rely on as they embark on their very own adventures. n Available at Asia Jewellers

Helping make children’s wishes come true.

E

stablished in 2011, The Dreams Society was formed with the goal of bringing joy to children affected by terminal illness or by a debilitating disease, by making their treasured dreams come true. Such illnesses include (but are not limited to) cancer, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Through a series of un-biased and objective interviews with these children, they aim to understand the child’s most desired dream and work on finding a way to make it come true. The Dreams Society believe that children who are ill should have the same opportunity to experience joy and happiness as all children. Dreams Society operates with complete integrity and dependability to ensure that the child has an unforgettable experience, and that the parents and family can share their joy. By making these dreams possible, not only they are brightening the days of the children for they are also creating meaningful memories that their families will treasure in their hearts forever. The Dreams Society believe that children who are ill should have the same opportunity to experience joy and happiness as all children. Annual Carnival took place at Funland and 500 children were invited to attend with their families. It truly was a fun-filled Saturday because of the amazing activities available for children including bowling, ice skating and billiards. Bahrain Ice Hockey Club supported and assisted the children at the ice rink. The excitement didn’t stop there because there were more engaging

happenings like face painting, arts and crafts and henna. On top of that, up to 70 games were created for the children to participate in. The Happy Box Bahrain have also donated Happy Boxes that was presented to some of the children. Seeing their smiling faces definitely concreted the event as a great success. Bahrain Confidential is proud to be the official media partner of The Dreams Society and the kids certainly enjoyed posing for our photographer. Upcoming events include #30dreamsin30days during Ramadan and also The Dream Society’s Annual Ghabga at The Gulf Hotel on the 1st of June 2017. There is definitely nothing more wonderful than people who go out of their way to make life beautiful for others. After all, the purpose of human life is to serve and to show compassion. #OneStepCloser Bahrain Confidential interviews Shakofa Asghar, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management at HSBC in Bahrain. Can you tell us what a typical day in your job role looks like? A typical day starts very early with a review of all the emails that need response, feedback from the frontline team and an update on the calendar for the day. That normally is done while drinking a nice warm cup of coffee. And I do not have too much time before the first meeting starts. In the retail business there is never much time for rest and I try to lead by example and show my teams the importance of pro-active thinking and customer centric actions.

Elite Seef Residence & Hotel opened up its doors to Bahrain Confidential.

Families were enjoying basking in this escapism, whilst others simply found refuge in the ‘Sip & Dip’ bar and individuals were seen to be enjoying shisha in the backdrop of the live entertainment. The Mr was certainly impressed with the large outdoor screen as he was already brainstorming future get-togethers for the World Cup and other major sporting events. The food allowed for a good nights sleep alongside the hugging comfort of the bed itself. As I awoke,I was thankful for the continental breakfast in bed that was deliveredto our room with a wide array of fresh fruit and delicatessens. I could definitely get used to the luxury of being looked after!

A

fter a whirlwind week of meetings I was looking forward to recharging my batteries with an overnight stay at Elite Seef Residence & Hotel. Our late check-in wasn’t an issue and the reception staff warmly greeted us. As we entered our pool-view suite I couldn’t help but smile, as I looked around at the spacious, well furnished and air conditioned rooms I knew that I was going to be able to finally unwind. There was also a comfortable seating area with satellite TV and a DVD player. My belly started to rumble; therefore I decided to have a nose about the poolside on a quest for food. I needn’t have worried as we sat down we were quickly attended to with knowledgeable waiting staff from IL Giardino restaurant that serves international cuisine. We decided

on an array of cold Lebanese Mezze and salads for starters, melt-in-your-mouth mixed grill platter for our main course and we managed (just)to finish our feast off with a “Death by Chocolate’ dessert, that you just HAVE to try. As I looked around at The Oasis, aptly named for it’s scenic greenery, with its open-air garden and it’s large heated swimming pool I just knew that I’d stumbled upon something special.

After breakfast, we enjoyed a session in the fully equipped Gym and decided to pop downstairs for a refreshing dip in the heated pool. Certainly one of the best ways to refresh yourself for the day ahead! Our stay was topped off by enjoying a freshly brewed cappuccino in one of Elite’s tucked away areas on the private rooftop. Perfect for oiling yourself up for a session of sunbathing alongside a refreshing beverage and a spot of shisha There truly is something for everyone to enjoy and with competitive pricing – why wouldn’t you treat yourself? n

Mobeena Inam imparts her knowledge about the artist behind the exhibition, OUT OF TIME.

J

ehan Saleh, is a Bahrain-based Egyptian artist who has been actively contributing to the rich art scene in the Kingdom for the last 15 years. Having acquired a degree in Art Education in Egypt, she moved to Bahrain in 2002 and taught Art at a school before furthering her career as an Art Curator and Business Development Manager at Al Bareh Art Gallery in Adliya, where she has been working for over 10 years. Her upcoming exhibition, OUT OF TIME, will be on during Bahrain’s Spring of Culture festival 2017. It will present the works of twenty artists from across Europe

60 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

and the Middle East. Each artist will be exhibiting 5 artworks -in mixed media- on handmade natural paper. Jehan and co-Curator, Abdellah Ahaddaf, have collaborated and selected international artists from countries as diverse as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Japan, Spain and the Netherlands. Jehan’s concept for this exhibition is based on the idea that the artist step outside the constraints of time and disengage from worldly concerns in order to totally immerse in their creativity. The inspiration for this concept came in 2014, when

Jehan Saleh

she participated in the ‘8th Riudebitlles Art Biennial: Artwork on Paper’ in Sant Pere in Spain; a town renowned for producing hand-made paper from natural sources like cotton, leaves and flowers. Understandably, the exhibition was devoted to natural paper as the sole media for artists to work on and allowed Jehan the opportunity to tour papermaking factories and become familiar with this medium. Her own artwork, on Egyptian papyrus (‘Bardi’ in Arabic), was selected in the best 5 pieces exhibited and featured on the first page of the Biennial 2014 catalogue. Jehan also got ample opportunity to meet great artists from

Art around the world. “I learned a lot from them how to be humble”, she admits modestly in her soft-spoken style. Jehan’s illustrious success in Spain inspired her to curate her own exhibition in Bahrain, using the medium of natural, hand-made paper, and so began the idea for OUT OF TIME. It took hard work to select the 20 participating artists, of whom she is one. Two pieces by each artist will be displayed in free-floating style on the gallery walls.

Jehan’s concept for this exhibition is based on the idea that the artist step outside the constraints of time and disengage from worldly concerns in order to totally immerse in their creativity. All artworks are for sale and prices range between BD400 to BD1000. OUT OF TIME will be launched at Al Bareh Art Gallery on 7th March from 7-9pm, and will run until 30th March. The exhibition is open to the public and there are no entrance fees. n

I

n the part of the world that I hail from, the arrival of Spring was always heralded by the appearance of tulips. Suddenly it seemed that every gentleman was clutching a colourful bunch and rushing to greet his lady for International Women’s Day. Isn’t it symbolic that this celebration, which falls on the 8th of March, coincides with a wonderful season when our Mother Nature wakes up from a wintery slumber? Dousing amidst fresh blooms and wonderful colours, startling us year after year with her unique ability to renew and revive herself. However, ladies in Bahrain are somewhat luckier, since we can celebrate being a woman not only once a year, but, every night of the week, should we be so inclined, as nearly all hotels or bars in our island are holding Ladies Nights. They lure us with free drinks and enticing entertainment (apparently there are 35 Ladies Nights for one to try in Bahrain... talk about being spoilt for choice!). Presumably our charming presence is supposed to allure gentlemen to these venues. Except whoever came up with the idea was not that well au fait about the female logic (oh, and before you would try

serious and intellectual discussions about new haircuts and new clothes. As Mother Nature renews herself every Spring, every woman also needs to revive and update her look and wardrobe. So, essentially it all boils down to two major problems that trouble all women internationally…no room in ones wardrobe and nothing to wear!

PS. Inevitably it all ends on the dance floor with Cindy Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun”…where we truly become a force to be reckoned with.

to contradict me that such a thing exists, I guarantee that it does, only the concept is so complex that we ourselves sometimes struggle to get to grips with it). Where was I? Oh yes, the Ladies Nights! If you ever spot a lively gaggle (as we do indeed go to these things in gangs) laughing and chatting over cocktails, you will understand what I am talking about. No matter what age, status or nationality, we are all united by the privilege of being a woman. So, we meet up and share our joys and sorrows, our dreams and achievements, dissemble our men and relationships, and obviously immerse into

lexandra Novik-Khamis is an artist, art teacher, art mentor and art guide. She was born in Ukraine but has been living in Bahrain for seven years. Alexandra opened up an art studio, made several exhibitions and was recognized as one of the most successful businesswoman in Gulf since then.

64 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

Art Bahrain Confidential digs deeper into Alexandra’s life… What inspires you as an artist? The main inspiration in my life are the people I love – my family: my mom, dad, sister and my husband. I painted them so many times but I will never be tired of painting portraits of them. From artists I really take inspirations from classical art works of Salvador Dali, Van Gogh and Jean-Francois Millet and Vasily Perov. I love surrealistic realism with a touch of impressionism.

What artwork do you most identify with? My life is an artwork in itself - the most inspiring artwork. I knew that I will be artist even when I was a child. When I was young, my biggest dream was to have endless stock of canvases and colours so I can paint all the time.

Can you describe your painting process; how do you know when your artwork is finished?

P.S. Put your heart, mind, and soul

into even your smallest acts. This is the secret of success. I am an artist, and I am proud to say it. Don't be scared to show your talents and be sure in yourself. Don't feel shy to remind yourself about how great you are in something. It's not vanity, it is self-inspiration. No need to compare yourself, no need to show off. Try to be modest but inspirational. The balance in your talents and selfrealization is important. n

I always try to catch the beauty of the moment and paint it. Every art work is born – it is a long process of creating that’s why each piece is different. It comes unexpectedly, I never really know what kind of art work I will produce. And sometimes art piece is never finished, but then it is becoming unfinished interesting art.

What is your favourite colour and why? I love bright colours or “tasty” colours as I call it. However, purple is the royal and very emotional colour for me.

Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I love Bahrain. I traveled a lot, but Bahrain is the best place for living. My favourite place is where I live – Amwaj Islands. One of the biggest dreams is to live by the sea. The beauty and nature of Amwaj is inspiring me every day.

Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring! Spring is, for so many reasons, the best season of all. We finally get to say "byeeee" to miserable old winter with its foggy… mornings and super short days, but still have a long way to go before having to endure yet another of Bahrain's sweaty summers. Spring brings longer days, so there's enough time for me to walk my two little dogs after work before the sun sets. It also brings milder temps, so household heaters can be slid back into the spare room for yet another year, and in the evenings, dining by moonlight becomes simply magical. Another amazing thing about spring is what it symbolises. Rebirth. Renewal. Rejuvenation. And if that sounds familiar, it's probably because we begin each new year in almost the same way. Remember? It wasn't that long ago. We were all just a little more tired and a lot more emotional. So if you've slipped up on your recent resolutions, it's ok peeps. Spring very sweetly offers us a chance to try all over again, and this time, to hopefully make 'em stick.

And of course there's the fashion. Spring gives us a taste of what's to come in the warmer months, showing us what direction our summer style is headed. At this point spring/summer 2017 promises to be a beautiful one, with a renewed focus on shapely shoulders peeping above ruffled tops, and the softest shades of pastel. I'm particularly partial to the delicate dove grey hues that have found their wings this spring.

72 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

So as you can see, there are so many reasons to love spring. The trick now is to peel off that pasty winter skin, get your good self outdoors and make the most of every glorious springtime minute. n

Wet and windy, with a chance of palm trees For those of us who are working away from our birth countries, the first few months after arrival are spent adapting to a new way of life; new sights, sounds, smells, different ways of doing things, and of course, a new culture. Often the first topic of conversation in the United Kingdom, between friends and even strangers, is the weather; too windy, too calm, too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold, whatever it is, we won’t like it. The weather in my homeland changes so frequently it is almost always the centre of conversation; in Scotland, they say if you don't like the weather, wait for an hour and it will change!

In Bahrain, we soon noticed the main topic of discussion amongst our friends was not the weather, but the driving, and that is not a subject I want to get into just now. Recently, I had to return to the UK to see my father, who was ill. Once again, we talked about the weather. With grey skies, perpetual rain, a bitingly cold wind and daytime temperatures of 2º C, (yes, thermometers do go that low, and much lower, so I am told,) no wonder people want to discuss it. So, it was with a sigh of relief, I boarded the aircraft at Manchester to return to sunny, dry Bahrain, only to find when I stepped off the aircraft, the only

74 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

difference between here and Manchester was 15º C and palm trees; even the conversation had turned to the weather. Thank you, Bahrain, for making me feel so at home. n

Why were you in Bahrain..? For the past four years, my parents have lived and worked in the Kingdom of Bahrain, while I’ve been traveling and studying in the Southern United States. Most Southerners that I’ve met, tend to have a fixed, rather negative perception of the Middle East. Despite social media and the Internet creating a world that seems welcoming to all, people still discriminate against those who are different from them. Some Southerners celebrate diversity, whilst others continue to question whether all Muslims are terrorists. One of these Southern Americans that might be considered ignorant of Islamic countries is my boyfriend. During our visit to Bahrain this past December, we were sitting in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in the Manama Souq in Bahrain, where I admired how my American boyfriend was devouring a bowl of mutabal. Scraping off every last drop of the eggplant goodness, he exclaimed how he loves this country. I remember how, a mere month before, he was dreading the terrifying Middle East, and to his utter surprise, he found one of the most welcoming and intriguing countries in the world.

From the moment I set foot on the small island nation, I was entertained and received an education on diversity.

f exercising more was one of your New Year’s Resolutions, chances are you’ve already given up or you’re already on the verge of doing so. A new study from the Iowa State University suggests that people with a health club membership exercise more, so you might want to consider joining in one.

Benefits Duck-chul (DC) Lee, an assistant professor of kinesiology and corresponding author of the paper, says the study found people who belonged to a health club not only exercised more – they also had better cardiovascular health outcomes. Those health benefits were even greater for people who had a gym membership for more than a year.

Members vs. non members Gym members were 14 times more aerobically active than nonmembers and 10 times more likely to meet muscle-strengthening guidelines, regardless of their age and weight. The results were similar in both men and women. Gym members overall had a more active lifestyle. Researchers say members were just as active outside the gym and in their daily lives, which contributed to better health outcomes like lowering the odds of being obese, lower resting heart rate and higher cardiorespiratory fitness. Elizabeth Schroeder, lead author and a former Iowa State graduate student, says while most people join a gym to lose weight, the research shows the many benefits of exercise. n

• Get more fiber at breakfast – if you choose a high-fiber

breakfast, you’re going to feel full sooner and eat less of it overall (oats are one good option).

• Cut back on cooking oil – when you’re sautéing vegetables

or cooking on a stovetop, one of the best things you can do is to use a nonstick cooking spray instead of putting oil in your pan. You can also sub in a few tablespoons of chicken, beef, or vegetable broth.

• Don’t eat in front of the TV – eating a meal while watching

the television unconsciously makes you overeat because we’re not paying attention to portion sizes and our brains may not fully register that we’ve eaten at all!

• Do more cooking at home – eating out may be the fast

option but it may help to know that home cooking on top of its other benefits, helps you cut calories. A study in the journal Public Health Nutrition found that people who cooked dinner six or seven nights a week consumed about 150 calories fewer per day than those who cooked once a week or less. n

People & Life Once upon a time there was a king who sent an Arabian horse to a king in Germany… At first, the horse had a hard time due to the big environment change – it could not eat and after a while, it struggled on how to walk on grass instead of sand. went through the same, but the good side is I get to know more about myself when I am alone. What I learned is that you are never truly alone when you meet good people. When you have someone who you can look into the eyes and feel like you can see their soul, then you are already at home. Home is inside of people’s hearts.

In the end, it’s just one world with different cultures – I do not see it the other way around.

After planning and giving my best shot, I went to Germany for an internship over a CrossCulture program at State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in Stuttgart. The objective of the project is to clarify the terminology of the conservation of wall painting and architectural surfaces among Europe conservation and restoration specialists and to get an excellent translation of the terminology. To put it simple, it is like a documentation of the used terms and standards for everyone in this field. Besides the workshop, I also got the chance to visit Moldovan monasteries that are registered in the world heritage list. This was amazing experience. It gave me the impression of the Byzantine drawing style which is more common in Eastern Europe. Those four days were amazing and Dr. Jakobs was simply someone who cared a lot for me, she always asked if I was okay, made sure that I enjoyed and helped a lot even without asking. I remember telling her about her kindness, and she told me that I needed to accept and learn to take because life is not always about giving. Simply watching her do what she loves and the way she does it always motivates me because of the way she focuses on drawing and gets creative

Have you any upcoming projects? If so, what? Why? I have two things that I’m concentrating on which is fashion photography and wedding photography. I love the creativity that you can do through a shoot – there are no limits to it. Weddings have always been my passion. To take these beautiful shots that people will look at for the rest of their lives whilst also being part of such an important day just makes you feel like a better person and I like that feeling. I have a couple of projects that are related to Bahrain. I try to do underwater photography and lifestyle photography. I’m trying to attract teenagers and new photographers to try something similar in which their own style will reflect. Once you do something you love, you’ll take care of all the things related to it and you seek more knowledge.

Have you any words of wisdom for anyone who wants to indulge in photography? If anyone wants to have photography as a career or a hobby, I just would love to tell them that, they shouldn’t worry about how the picture would look like and how similar they are to other photographers because photography is an open book. What’s really nice and what attracts people is the way you see things and that’s what makes people different from each. It’s always good to try new things. I’ve noticed that the weirdest ideas that I came up with and did a shoot with, were actually my best works which is surprising.

What is so special about Bahrain to you?

84 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

Bahrain is a very special island to me. I was born and raised in Bahrain and all my family and friends are here too. I’ve learned that this island is accepting to new talents. It’s a great place to live in – everything is easy, people here are very nice. I think there are many things not available in Bahrain but with time, I think our culture is so rich and accepting. I’ve noticed many changes in 2015 to 2017 and I’m aware that in 2019, there will be more changes. If you know how to have fun in the island and how to find something to do and just do it, it has an endless potential. n

People & Life Do your creative outlets ever cause conflict? They flow in and out of my life. … I’ve gone ridiculous amounts of time without painting or singing. I sometimes don’t feel the need to start up again as it seems more of a chore until one day there is an almost nagging need to do something creative and then I get fully immersed for a ridiculous amount of time all over again. I have to alternate between regular life stuff and then I tap in to my creative side later. I'm also currently singing at The Polo Gastropub which is another creative outlet for me.

Name a hidden gem in Bahrain. What and why? Hidden gem in Bahrain? I would say it’s this weird little kind of off the beaten path part of the beach in Durrah. Zeyad and I were there very recently and we managed to find almost an entire skeleton of a massive sea turtle, so, that was a really cool find. Also, on top of that it was relatively uninhabited which is really nice. Of course, there are developments going on, but, it’s so far away that no-one really goes there!

What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about most things. I don’t really like to do anything unless I’m passionate about it. I’m a passionate vegetarian to the point where the thought of eating meat makes me cry. I’m a passionate artist, I think everything should be beautiful, you should be surrounded by aesthetically pleasing things and do things that make you happy. I’m a passionate humanitarian as well; I’m passionate about a whole load of causes that genuinely keep me awake at night. I can’t really narrow it down.

What is so special about Bahrain to you? Bahrain has this kind of way of bringing you in. I’ve had the good fortune to live in so many places in the world that have all kinds of exotic and different things, although Bahrain is laid back in comparison it’s just this really relaxed great atmosphere, everything is comfortable and everything seems easy. It almost immediately feels like home and once you find the right people, your unique underworld here, it kind of…I don’t know… it hugs you. Zeyad actually made Bahrain more fun for me as I had a kind of a tough time transitioning since I was living in Arizona, but, once I met Zeyad he showed me the cool parts of the beach and the desert, that no one really goes to and I loved it all the more. n

Eman Veterinary Clinic Take the first step in protecting your furry friend.

I

was approaching the Burgerland roundabout in the right hand lane on Budaiya highway during very busy rush hour traffic when a little furry motion in the road caught my attention. I was very pregnant and due soon. I slowed down while I put my hazard lights on and quickly weighed my options. To my left was a huge truck. In one instant the driver of the truck realized it was a kitten in the road and he looked and motioned for me to proceed. He stopped the traffic with his large truck as I waddled out of my car to get the kitten. The truck driver gave a smile of approval and the busy traffic went back to normal. If the driver beside me had not stopped traffic, I would not have been able to safely save the kitten. This was a beautiful illustration that we can do more for animals when we work together than when we are alone and that we just need to look around ourselves to find those people. I love working with people to help animals and that is why I became a veterinarian.

My life passion is educating people about healthcare for animals and I am blessed that I have been able to do this in many different locations. In 1999, I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. I worked in

86 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

veterinary clinics in Illinois, California, and Texas. My husband was born and raised in Bahrain, so in 2007 I moved to Bahrain. I enjoy working as a veterinarian in Bahrain and in my free time, like to go to schools and talk with children about animal care and veterinary medicine. It is with great excitement that I recently opened Eman Veterinary Clinic. In honor of my educational passion for animals, I am hosting animal health veterinary education events. The events are times for anyone in the community to schedule a free 10 minute appointment with me to bring their pet in and ask whatever pet healthcare questions they may have. The next scheduled event will take place this month. Due to time constraints, no treatments are included and would need to be scheduled later. The appointments are meant to be educational. Just like people are in better health when they take good care of themselves, our pets are in better health when we take good care of them. Parents are encouraged to bring their children along with the family pet so everyone in the family can learn more about taking care of their pet. I am well experienced in working with dogs and cats and am also very experienced in pet birds, rabbits, and guinea pigs. n

A

s of December 2016, Tesla has sold over 186,000 electric cars worldwide since delivery of its first Tesla Roadster in 2008. The company has a goal of producing 500,000 cars annually in 2018. Following the company’s official entrance into the Dubai market, the Dubai Road & Transport Authority announced that it would be purchasing 200 of Tesla’s Model S sedans and Model X SUVs for use by the Dubai Taxi Corporation — the official taxi service operator in the emirate. The new purchase agreement was signed “on the sidelines of a summit in Dubai,” with Tesla’s Elon Musk and the Road & Transport Authority’s Chairman Mattar Al Tayer. California-based Tesla is accepting online orders from customers in the United Arab Emirates, a pop-up store in the Dubai Mall and a Tesla service center being built on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, which is due to open in July. Founder Elon Musk said that Tesla will

dirhams (~$75,000) for the Model S, and 344,000 dirhams for the Model X - not very different from the company’s pricing anywhere else. Presumably, the only differences from the US are due to shipping and import taxes/fees. Deliveries to the region are expected to begin by July.

was in Bali last month. What a lovely place; unpretentious and welcoming. The people here are so down to earth, and though driven by tourism, the island has a whole lot of nature to enjoy. No one can think of this popular holiday destination without recalling Elizabeth Gilbert’s freakishly successful book-made-into-amovie ‘Eat Pray Love’. The title explores the author’s journey from a bitter divorce to finding herself to ultimately finding love. I happened to read the sequel, ‘Committed’, in which Gilbert talks about how most women (she speaks for the average American woman but I believe her views hold true for the average Indian/ Arab woman too) hype marriages and weddings, making them the centre of their lives. Further, she shares her conversations with Laotian women, an elderly lady in particular, which help her realise that a broken marriage or spouse who falls short of expectations are not the end of the world and it’s ridiculous to let these dictate one’s very being. I tied the knot only a month ago and am glad I read this book before that because it polished my perception toward romantic relationships. I didn’t walk into my marriage with stars in my eyes. Don’t get me wrong, my husband is a lovely (and lucky!) man! That said, I haven’t lost myself making the transition from miss to missus. Growing as individuals first has helped us grow as a couple.

98 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

Aries (21 March – 19 April) – This

month will see expansion through philosophy, travel or education. It promotes the flow in your life so that things are easier than they have been in the past. You will find ways to express your unique identity in the outer world, preferably while promoting social justice.

Libra (23 September – 22 October) - This should be an exciting month; something long in the making will show signs of fruition. There are still some loose ends that need to be tied up, though. You are setting and achieving goals and you must also learn compassion to manifest your best results.

Taurus (20 April – 20 May) – You will be preoccupied in issues ranging from the mundane study of the budget to important discussions with partners over the need for greater intimacy. You may be organizing business issues related to an inheritance or your own legacy. You will back out of unviable professional commitments.

Scorpio (23 October – 21 November) - Positivity, affirmations, being kind to yourself, celebrating your talents and successes – all of this will create fertile soil for your dreams to take root and grow. You will need to let go of any desire to have power over others and focus on developing your inner strength.

Gemini (21 May – 20 June) - This is a propitious time for you to begin new things, especially if they involve travel or communications. Give special attention to investments and other shared resources. Ease up on the energy output. Your physical body may feel sluggish and your primary focus should be on internal healing.

Sagittarius (22 November -21

Cancer

(21 June – 22 July) - You will feel the need to mature and to solidify your identity, in a new or additional field of work. Changes have come into your life through relationships with those who have minds of their own and they will teach you to set boundaries and claim your independence in a relationship.

Capricorn (22 December – 19 January) - You should be inspired to achieve greater spiritual understanding by clearing your mind of past thoughts. Being true to yourself will bring about the happiness you seek. Progress will be made and stability is just around the corner! Take this inspirational energy and put it to good use.

Leo (23 July – 22 August) - You might encounter a physical or emotional blockage that demands healing before you move forward. If you do not recognize your feelings, a situation may drop in from the sky that will remind you of circumstances of the past. You will be prone to overreact.

Aquarius (20 January – 18

Virgo (23 August – 22 September) - A new vision for your life will take its place as the month moves forward, but be patient. It will be your responsibility to maintain the opportunities you've been given. You will be adding new spirit to an ongoing relationship. Many possibilities for reaching people will develop.

December) - A pervading sense of ambivalence is creeping into your life just when you think it’s safe. You’ve been putting too much emphasis on some form of security: a relationship, job or lifestyle. It is holding you back as you’re overlooking an opportunity right in front of your eyes.

February) - Concentrate on your strengths and abilities and let go of what you cannot complete or what you don't possess. Start creating very specific financial plans and goals to get yourself there. It will help.get your life on track and put more trust in your own thoughts and ideas.

Pisces (19 February – 20 March) – You are in the midst of warmth, brightness, and beauty. Keep reaching for the skies, to stay connected with nature and grasp the full power of your capacity and set yourselves free from all restrictions. Work on self-care, selfassessment and the choices you need to make in life.

Last Word

T

hursday evening and the other half was in full holiday mode as I picked him up from school. Don’t worry, he’s a teacher!

The in-laws were already enroute to Dubai. Ordinarily, the thought of meeting in-laws would produce a certain sense of dread. Fortunately, they’re lovely, it’s the said other half that concerns me. As we parked the car in the overflow parking area we flagged down the shuttle bus to commute us to Bahrain Airport. As it rattled along the road I couldn’t help but observe the other passengers. Some were all suited and booted whilst others were casually adorning flip-flops that had seen better days. Either way, our common denominator was to not miss our flight. The airline we flew with seemed to be hesitant in checking people in. We overheard that the plane was overbooked (how? I do not know!), but, they continued to interrogate passengers as to whether or not their flight arrangements were necessary and offered alternate timings. Not what you want to hear whilst getting geared up for a quick transition.

Fight or Flight I did the usual browse in Duty Free where I was molested with smiling faces and attacked with perfume.

106 Bahrain Confidential March 2017

As we continued to line up to receive our boarding passes the conversation typically veered to the topic of how heavy our luggage would be. As the scales ascended I had an inner fist pump at bettering my other half’s’ abysmal guess. Alas, we were able to pursue our original route. Now, I don’t know about you, but there certainly seems to be a furor of confusion whilst going through baggage screening. Ladies adorned in a collection of jewels and gold genuinely looking surprised, amidst a pinch of wonder, as to why they are suddenly hearing a resounding beep from the scanners as they catwalk stomp through. This primal activity merely makes me chuckle to myself. Whereas, the other half flung off his belt like he was auditioning for The Full Monty, which certainly raised a few eyebrows… and a certain thud in the ribs from myself, for good measure. After that ordeal, I did the usual browse in Duty Free where I was molested with smiling faces and attacked with perfume. I certainly came out of that scenario smelling of roses. Now, which gate was I again? n
