Rami Al Ali Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of internationallyrenowned designer, Rami Al Ali.
SS17
What sparked your interest in fashion? I had always been interested in fashion from a very young age and I knew that my career would always take a creative route. I moved to Damascus where I studied Visual Communications at the College of Fine Arts and it wasn’t until my graduation project, where I decided to conduct a fashion show, that I realised fashion would form a big part of my future.
Bahrain Confidential May 2017 27
Fashion Who inspires you most in fashion? Anyone who stands out? I’m always inspired by designers that have a very clear message, identity and aesthetic. I follow a few that have a steady evolution within these 3 aspects: Giambattista, Valli&Delpozo
How would you describe your style? My personal style is very classic but with a slight twist. I like to invest into timeless pieces that will stand the test of time. n
My personal style is very classic but with a slight twist. I like to invest into timeless pieces that will stand the test of time.
How has your cultural root influenced your designs and collections? Syrian design is all about focusing on the little details that make up the bigger picture, such as the ornate patterns in mosaics, or the beautiful Arabic shapes in architecture. I try and use this idea in my designs by ensuring I always pay very close attention to the finer details – from the fall of the fabric to the placement of a sequin. These features elevate my designs to create something special and unique.
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your own line? The biggest lesson I have learnt is to stay consistent to the brands focus/ethos each season; this gives your brand a strong identity and you build a core customer base. I have also learnt to stay motivated and whatever curve balls may come my way to think of it as a challenge and a way of improving.

The CG Method‌
Have you heard of it?
Lorraine Massey invented the curly girl method and it is a method in which you go SHAMPOO FREE to give your curls/waves some ultra moisture. Instead of shampooing you cowash (wash your scalp with conditioner) and you condition and style your hair with silicone free and sulfate free products.
32 Bahrain Confidential May 2017
How to wash and style
1
STEP
CLEANSE
3
STEP
Gently scrub and stimulate the entire scalp with fingertips (no nails!) and conditioner. The friction will lift residue, sweat & oil to be rinsed out.
How often should you cleanse? Wavy - You may use regular shampoo, but only once a week. Always condition before & after using shampoo. Curly - Cowash with water and conditioner once a week or every 10 days. Coily - In between cowash days, wet your hair and go straight to Step 2.
2
DRY & STYLE Bend forward & blot dry by cupping curls in a towel never wring or disturb your curls. Then air-dry. If you’re in a hurry, use a diffuser. Scrunch gel from ends toward the scalp, starting at the nape and working up, scrunch the top layer last. Clip the roots for lift. Wavy – Encourage your curls to form with extra scrunching or by doing pin curls. Curly – When hair is completely dry, bend forward and fluff from underneath to create lift. Don’t touch the top layer to avoid frizz. Coily – While Lorraine recommends a wash & go, you can style your hair however you like. Just try to avoid heat.
The dos and don’ts of the CG Method DON’T USE • • • •
Shampoo Heat styling tools Combs & brushes Sulfates – namely sodium lauryl sulfate & ammonium laureth sulfate • Non-water soluble silicones • Alcohol • Fragrance
STEP
DO USE
CONDITION
✔
• Gentle cleansing ingredients - cocamidopropyl betaine and decyl polyglucose • Emollients - Shea butter, olive & vegetable oils • Proteins - wheat, wheat germ or soy • Humectants - panthenol, vegetable glycerine, sorbitol • Moisturizers - amino acids & aloe vera • Styling gel ingredients - PVP and PVP/VA
Smooth conditioner over hair in sections, until all hair has been coated with conditioner. Let the water distribute the product evenly. Wavy - Rinse your hair for just a few seconds, if a little bit of conditioner is left on the hair that’s ok. Curly - You can either rinse or leave the conditioner in at this point, depending on how much moisture you need. Coily - If you have time when conditioning, wrap your hair and apply heat for 15 minutes for a moisture boost. Rinse completely to avoid a visible film.

Be your own
#EyeEnvy Lifestyle and beauty blogger Tulin Meric Sahin gives Bahrain Confidential a tutorial for the perfect look this Ramadan.
1. Apply eye shadow base to even out skin texture and tone. I used 'Soft Ocre' by Mac. 2. Using a smudger brush, apply the shade 'Buck' on the inner and outer corners of the upper eyelid. 3. Blend those two corners into the upper crease using the same brush, trying to leave a 'bracket' effect where the centre of the lid is free from shadow. 4. Apply the same colour using a pencil brush on the entire lower lash line starting from the outer corner towards in inner corner. Blend the colour outwards at the outer corner of the eye. 5. Apply the colour 'Darkhorse' with a soft shader brush just above and in the crease blending gently as you go along. 6. Using a small flat shader brush apply the colour 'Half Naked' on the centre of the lower lid sandwiched inbetween the 'bracket' that was first created. 7. Blend gently and softly till all colours merge well with each other. 8. Use the shade 'Creep' with a short angled brush and apply it by gently pressing in then blending into the lower lash line starting from the outer corner in. 9. Using a black eyeliner create a soft wing. 10. Apply the pencil tight into the lash line all along the upper lid. 11. Using the same short angled brush, smudge the pencil out from side to side allowing the excess product on the brush to emphasize the flick for the wing. 12. Use the same brush with whatever product is left over from the pencil onto the lower lash line concentrating on the outer edges. 13. Apply your favourite mascara not forgetting your lower lash line also. My current favourite is Upward Lash mascara by Mac. n

How Ready Are You for
Ramadan? Clinical Dietician Diana Nakhle shares her tips to prepare for Ramadan…
D
ays are passing by so quickly! Just before you realise it, Ramadan will soon knock at your door; That month of the year where you do not only abstain from food and drinks for certain hours, but you fast for a purpose. It’s quite hard to deal with all the changes all at a sudden on the first day of Ramadan, especially the headaches, indigestions, hunger, and tiredness. This is why following a pre-fasting regimen and planning will make the whole transition a lot easier and will lessen the symptoms you might experience.
metabolism. But during Ramadan you will not have the time to eat all your regular snacks. In the lead up to Ramadan, get used to eating 3 main meals with as less snacks as possible.
Reduce your food intake
That headache you get if you didn’t drink your morning coffee or tea cup on time, will definitely feel worse while you are fasting if you haven’t prepared your body in advance. The key is to gradually decrease your intake of coffee and caffeinated beverages throughout the day to train your body to function caffeine free during daytime. First, reduce the intake to one coffee a day, then switch to decaffeinated coffee, and finish up by cutting your daily intake all together.
Knowing that fasting is almost close, without realizing you start to eat more thinking you want some reserve for all the long fasting hours. However, over eating prior to Ramadan, will contribute to some weight gain, increase in appetite, and will make first days of fasting the hardest. Instead, start by reducing the quantity of one meal at a time.
Exclude Snacks Eat small healthy snacks in between your meals to keep you full and stimulate your
40 Bahrain Confidential May 2017
Eat Breakfast Early As a preparation for Suhour, the pre-dawn meal before the fast begins, start having your breakfast earlier from now even if you are not hungry. The purpose is to get your body and stomach used to the new routine and when to expect food.
Cut Down on Caffeine
Regulate your Sleep Start by putting your alarm a little earlier
each morning, as a result you will have an early sleep at night.
Pre-Ramadan Fasting days In order to gain control over your actions, stomach and desires, practicing fasting days will ease your fasting adaptation. In the run up to Ramadan, choose two days per week to fast, and start gradually increasing the days as we approach the Holy month. This Time of the year requires a lifestyle change, both spiritually, mentally and physically. As you are still energetic and fully focused, plan ahead your meals to avoid last minute hassle and control your cravings so it won’t affect what your body actually needs. Change your lifestyle in advance and maybe permanently you will be stopping some bad health habits. Wishing everyone a Holy month full of faith and spirituality! Ramadan Kareem n

R
atmanee Wongsangmoung known as “Gigi” is the resident senior therapist at The RitzCarlton Spa, Bahrain. Gigi is one of the original staff members and her welcoming aura instantly made me feel that I was in good hands. Just as well really since I’d just booked in for a massage!
After indulging in some complimentary ginger tea and completing my initial consultation I was advised that I would benefit from their ‘Thai inspired massage’
“I ensure that my guests leave satisfied and I follow up with them even after they leave the spa. I try to go that extra mile to deliver the true Ritz Carlton experience” – Gigi, Senior Spa Therapist
that would be personalised for optimum results against my particular ailments. As I was led through to my treatment room I couldn’t help but pause at various points to ogle the chic furnishings which just scream authenticity as opposed to a garish rendition of the latest gadgets. They keep things simple whilst not scrimping on quality or atmosphere. After all, little things mean a lot! As I lay down on one of the Thai beds in a private treatment room I was advised of the importance of warming the muscles as Gigi set away rhythmically applying pressue with a Thai herbal that was made up of 24 various herbs wrapped in unbleached cotton cloth. Each herb has specific healing properties including anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, detoxifying, and skin cleansing properties. By using pressure points Gigi was able to control different forms of chronic pain that have unfortunately reared their head over the years. I was intrigued by Gigi’s
acupressure as it involves knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine, internal organs and systems of the body. Gigi’s continuous surprises talents didn’t cease to amaze me as she further combined my treatment with reflexology. This is where Pressure points found in these areas correspond to organs and tissue that normally cannot be reached by a normal massage. By stimulating a pressure point the corresponding area will experience a beneficial effect through the reflex of the nervous system. This also influenced the flow of my ‘qi’ (energy) by stimulating certain points with pressure. I was treat to elements of acupressure to manipulate these points alongside reflexology; a traditional Chinese medicine therapy focusing on relieving stress in our bodies by working specifically with hands and feet. Just recently, Bahrain Confidential had the lovely chance to catch up with the Kuwaiti stunner to get to know her better…
What does a typical day in your life look like? A typical day would be running around for work, checking emails, and living off of cappuccinos.
What is your must-have beauty staple that is always in your handbag? Why? I always carry with me a lip moisturiser to avoid chapped lips, especially during the summer.
Did you have a business plan as far as your social media following was concerned? When I started Instagram, I did not go into it thinking it would be this huge and I would get this number of following. I am very grateful for each supporter because without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
What has been your biggest challenge to date? Staying myself. Thankfully, my family keeps me sane and humble.
What is next on your radar? Many big and exciting things, stay tuned! We will surely stay tuned on what’s next for Fouz! n
Do what you love and post the things you like, and just be yourself.
What is your favourite thing to do in Bahrain? I really enjoy meeting my followers from Bahrain.
What was your first job? Before social media, I was working and teaching in Kuwait University.
What tip can you give our readers for maximising their social media presence? Do what you love and post the things you like, and just be yourself.

Transcending Boundaries
Art
Bahrain Confidential explores the mind of Geneva-based Bahraini artist, Farah Monfaradi. What motivates you to get up in the morning? I usually have deadlines for client art works to be delivered. At present I have been commissioned by the Swiss Red Cross (SRC) to create a unique art piece for a charity auction, where the proceeds will aid the displaced children refugees in camps in Lebanon. A great motivator as this is a subject close to all our hearts right now. I have no lack of motivation in my artistic career. There is always something, whether
46 Bahrain Confidential May 2017
its an exciting new project or idea, or preparing for an art exhibition or meeting a deadline.
Which artwork do you most identify yourself with? I identify myself with every piece of my art, it comes from me and is a part of me & my life experiences. I have a lot to say and love to use the power of words and texts on canvas. At the moment the piece that resonates the strongest is entitled SOLACE. It is a huge "wall" of art. It is a deeply spiritual work that unites us in our suffering. We have all suffered at some
Art
point in our lives, and this art work is about RELIEF. The words are taken from Surat Al-Inshirah where God promises us after suffering there shall be relief. It is a wall of prayer and hope. A work that transcends borders, religions, race & cultures.
What does art mean to you? Art for me is a form of self-expression, it is my therapy, my pleasure and my compulsion! If I have something to say I need to expel it either on a canvas or in another form of media. I feel compelled to bring awareness to events around me, whether on the news, social media or in daily life, through my art. I pay homage to my middle-eastern heritage that is so deeply imbedded in me, as well as expressing my liberal European upbringing through my art.
How has technology change your artistic process? For now, I use very little technology in my art process. I would say at most I use photoshop in my photographic works. But generally, I am "old school", practicing paints, gels and textures on canvas; using the artistic skills of gold-leaf work (gilding); and restoring antique frames and flags for use in my art.
Can you describe your artistic process? How do you know when an artwork is finished? In every art series the process is similar,
I identify myself with every piece of my art, it comes from me and is a part of me & my life experiences.
I am affected emotionally in some way by a topic and need to create around that emotion or thought. For example, my latest series using crocodile skulls is entitled "This is not a handbag" was inspired by a scandal involving a large fashion house and their "alleged" cruelty to crocodiles in the killing process to use their skin. I try to honour these magnificent creatures in their deaths. (No animals are harmed in the making of my art). With the written canvases I never complete the canvas with words and always leave a space, as I feel no "story" is ever finished. With my flags in the process of solidifying the flag to create the effect of floating in the wind, I look at the way the wind "blows" on that day and when I find it pleasing I stop. My flags are unique, and the wind never blows the same way twice! There is always a danger of over-working any art piece, but for me knowing the art work is finished is aesthetic and instinctual and this applies to all my art works. n You can reach her at: farahmonfaradi.com info@farahmonfaradi.com

People & Life
BAH-BOMBAH As I held her in my hands, after ten minutes of intense labour, all I could think of was, ‘I’m in love with the shape of you’. She wasn’t perfect but I was so proud of my small littlewheatish creation. My first…. …baked chapatti. What were you thinking? There was a time when Indian girls were considered ripe for marriage the moment they learned to roll and cook perfectly round, soft chapattis (flat bread made from wheat and roasted on a griddle). It didn’t matter if they hadn’t hit puberty; if they were old enough to make phulkas(light and fluffy chapattis usually fried without oil),they were old enough to say ‘I do’. Thankfully, times have changed or else my parents would have been convicted of child marriage. In my defence, the mister is a big fan of my chapattis. I say this because he often recommends we have them with guacamole and salsa. Apparently, ‘they’re crunchy like tacos’. Then again, I’m not sure he means it as a compliment because this one time, after we’d tippled on a weekend’s eve, he told me that someday my chapattis would be the death of him – well, no true story ever started with a salad, now, did it?The following morning though,he denied having said anything like that. I’ve still not been able to figure out if he implied death by eatingone or me throwing one at his head, the odds being when I find his wet towel on my side of the bed.

A year ago, when I learned I would be relocating and by extension leaving my then current job as Editor, I was ecstatic! Yes, you read it right. Oh come on, of course I was sad that I would have to take a short break from my career in writing which I’m so passionate about; but ecstatic because I was thrilled by the idea of being a homemaker. It’s been 4 months (my probation period?) since I took to my new role and even though being a housewife is physically and emotionally demanding, not to mention, an often, unfortunately, thankless job, it’s rewarding in its own way. Being fiercely career-oriented, I know I will miss the adrenaline rush of a 9 to 5 someday and get back to the grind but until then I’m happy doing what I do. I don’t understand why some women feel they aren’t contributing enough just because they don’t work out of a cubicle. I’m not judging those who prefer full time office jobs to being at home but all I’m saying is in case you don’t have one because you can’t find the right profile or have had to quit for medical or other reasons, don’t belittle yourself. Managing one’s home is no less than managing a business – we are entrepreneurs in every sense of the word – we take financial risks because we give up our financial independence, in the hope of earning a profit i.e. a happy family. And that’s exactly what I told Mrs. X, a curt woman in her 50s who rolled her eyes at me saying ‘so, you’re telling me you’re an entrepreneur’. Yes, I am, but I prefer the term homemaker, please. n

Photo of the Indian School girl
Mama Mariam
What motivates you to get up in the morning? Morning coffee with my family.
You have traveled a lot of places and took many photographs during your course of work. Which photograph do you most identify yourself with? A picture of a school girl I took when I was in Jodhpur, India in 2008. She hovers above me in my studio; and reminds me to be strong and look at life directly in the eyes.
What does photography mean to you? What first drew you to take photos? Photography has surrounded me since I was a child; I owned my first camera when I was barely 6. Then I discovered a suitcase filled with my Mother's old
negatives; I can still remember the smell of chemicals on them; I was hooked.
How important is it for photographers/artists to “connect” with their subjects? Very important because our art is our reflection. One must become one with their subjects and then the magic happens.
How has technology changed your artistic process? Very much so. I started out with analog cameras, film, darkrooms and chemicals to literally expose an image on paper. Now instead of a darkroom I use photo shop and output digital prints. What’s important to remember is not the technique or equipment that makes the difference. It's the vision of the person
making the art that makes it work or not.
Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? Bahrain to me is special on so many ways. Really, every angle and place in Bahrain has its own nostalgic beautiful quality. For me, the 2 places that endear me the most are Manama Souq and Muharraq; so much to see and experience with a beautiful mix of ethnicities mingling with each other. Truly a feast for a photographer’s eye. n

A Cut Above the Rest Bahrain Confidential explored the mind of culinary master and world-renowned restaurateur, Wolfgang Puck. Why Bahrain? We decided 7 or 8 years ago to expand internationally and the opportunity finally came – the first two restaurants were in London and Singapore, then came along Dubai and Bahrain. We opened first in Dubai because it was situated in a pre-existing hotel. It took a while before we opened up one in Bahrain, but I have found out over the last two years since we opened that it actually was a great decision.
How involved are you with the staff as far as Wolfgang Puck is concerned? Certain things are standardised but I want the chef to be creative as well. It doesn’t have to be exactly like what I show but
52 Bahrain Confidential May 2017
I want people to be creative and really figure out something on their own. I also think it is important that they are not getting bored in what they’re doing.
Do you have a particular favourite dish that you just could not ‘not have’ on your menu? I like change a lot. I like evolution. One of the reasons why we’re still in business and still doing well after 35 years is that we change. Our business is a little bit like fashion – if someone does the same thing they did three years ago; nobody will buy what they are selling. In food, we try to retain a part of it – comfort. As long as we change and have something different and interesting, people will love it. I think we always try to be both: innovative whilst having a great sense of comfort.
Do you think people from Bahrain have different taste buds per se as opposed to others? It’s always a gradual educational phase – in art, fashion, music or whatever it is, we learn as we go along. My taste buds changed over the years, I eat spicier food now than I used to. I grew up in Austria where we used salt, pepper and a few herbs, but, when I moved to LA, different restaurants use chilli and spices. My palate is used to that stuff now. I think everybody’s taste buds change.
Where did your love for cooking come from? My mother. She was a chef at a hotel during the summertime and she cooked at home in the wintertime too. She was
Feature
a very good cook; we grew up poor but she could make a lot of dishes with way little money. When I was 12 or 13, I always went in the hotel to visit her and when I was 14, she got me an apprenticeship as a cook. I didn’t really like it at first. It is when I went to L'Oustau de Baumanière in France that cooking sparked my interest. I met the owner who was aged 72 and was still really passionate about food. I was in awe of his passion and I then realised that I wanted to be like him.
What’s your comfort food? Something you can wrap up in 5-10 minutes max?
Certain things are standardised but I want the chef to be creative as well. It doesn’t have to be exactly like what I show but I want people to be creative.
I have way too little stock in my refrigerator. I don’t like things to be wasted but we always have vegetables. I bring some food from the restaurant to my home and then I cook it. It might be a simple fish or something which I butterfly, remove the bones and parch with some olive oil. I then season it with salt, pepper and mix it with a lot of fresh herbs. I chop the herbs finely, mix it with breadcrumbs, put that on top and just put it underneath the broiler. In 5 minutes, I have a delicious fish; just a little lemon to finish it up and that’s it. For me, food in a way is something sacred. I don’t really eat junk or cheap food because I know most of it is not good for my body.
Does your wife cook at home? Sometimes. She’s in fashion which she doesn’t do often now, especially when we had kids. For the last three to four years, she had been working with me. She really rearranged all of our things. She’s like a
creative brand director.
If you had your last dinner, what would it be? Anything with truffles and some really good wine… and maybe some good chocolate afterwards.
What can you say is the biggest challenge that you have faced in your career? The biggest challenge for me was when I was young. I was 14 when I left home and my stepfather always told me that I was good for nothing. When I left home, the chef I worked for in a small hotel also told me I was good for nothing after three weeks and fired me but I didn’t take no for an answer so I just went back the next day. I was hiding at the vegetable cellar and the chef came down two weeks later and saw me. He reiterated that he had already fired me, but, I told him that I’m not leaving which pushed him to call the owner of the hotel. They had sent me to another hotel and there it started to get better. That was really the hardest thing for me but after that, it just started to get better and better so today, I can’t complain anymore. There’s always challenges but I love challenges.
What has been your biggest achievement? It is the fact that we opened in 1982 and we are still successful until now. Last year, Spago had its best year ever. Normally, restaurants come and go but we are still here and I think that’s really a great experience. n

Flavours on 2 situated in the Downtown Rotana provides a refreshing twist on the ‘typical’ brunch.
A
fter a long week at work I was excited to unwind at Flavours on 2 at their Friday brunch from 12pm until 4pm. After experiencing other brunches in Bahrain I had an idea of what was in store, however, I was pleasantly surprised that the Downtown Rotana surpassed my usual perception of a brunch.
This is an absolute MUST as far as brunches are concerned and with Ramadan approaching you’d be wise to make the most of it! So, whatever the excuse occasion, make sure it’s at Downtown Rotana. From the moment we entered the building we were met with smiling staff that led us to the lifts.Flavours on 2 is the culinary heart of the hotel offering all-day dining choices from an international buffet to an à la Carte menu. An open-style kitchen and live cooking stations bring a lively atmosphere into the restaurant. As we were seated, knowledgeable waiters advised us of the beverages that were on offer including an overview of the different food stations available. My mouth was salivating overtime at this point and I needed to tuck in. After all, they do say food is the way to anyone’s heart! Whilst exploring the diverse culinary cultures at Flavours on 2 we were indulged further by an on-going live performance of their resident saxophonist. This entwined with the backdrop of stylish furnishings and the contemporary setting with live

cooking stations is nothing short of magnificent. My fellow guests and I were in absolute awe when we soaked in all that was available to us. Their contemporary buffet spread is most definitely a feast for your eyes, with international dishes such as Oriental, Asian, Western, with a wide display of sushi and sashimi, fresh seafood and live stations. There is definitely something to satisfy all appetites and tastebuds. Children will also have a great time with their own modern supervised ‘Kids Room’ filled with toys and games for all ages. Free valet parking is also available. All of the above at an affordable cost of BD26* including selected beverages and BD21* including soft drinks and juices, you also have free pool access until 7pm – added bonus! n

The day started out byus checking in at the La Ville Hotel on Dubai’s City Walk, a globally recognised luxury and hospitality hotspot. We had an exceptionalgourmet dinner with our fellow guests, who included the Roll-Royce Motor Cars team, renowned social media personalities, and key influencers from around the region. Among them were brand ambassador

Highly progressive and exceptionally luxurious, the boutique is a staging point for one-of-a-kind examples of Rolls-Royce Bespoke motor cars. The 7,300 square foot boutique is home to an Inspiration Studio, Bespoke Atelier, Interactive Spirit of Ecstasy, Pinnacle Café and Virtual Reality Configurators. It also embodies the brand’s commitment to effortlessly integrating itself into the lifestyle of its patrons.

were briefed on the mountain drive route. After the crash course, the group headed towards the cars we would drive to The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Resort in Ras Al Khaimah. The selection of cars included theDawn, Ghost, Wraith and Rolls-Royce current range – the Black Badge Series which is a new incarnation of the brand’s marque. This series denotes a special line of motorcars that come with higher performance and are outfitted more preciously, with a darker overall aesthetic. The original plan was to drive along Jebel Jais, one of the finest mountain roads in the world. It has become a magnet for enthusiastic drivers, sightseers and extreme athletes. I’ve done it before with McLaren where I had the most fun. Jebel Jais is the GCC’s answer to the NürburgringNordschleifecircuit in Germany better known as “The Ring”. Unfortunately, there has been huge amounts of rain which has swept away the lower parts of the road so we took alternate routes. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop the pleasure and the drive was still as remarkable.
THE DAWN Despite the warning of a slight drizzle, we drove the stunning Rolls-Royce Dawn – the
only convertible in the lineup. The Dawn’s alluring presence is unmistakable, right from the very first counter. Striking and assertive, its charm and charisma draw you in. Four individual seats offer matchless comfort and an elegant aesthetic which our group including Daniella Rahme were able to enjoy. Quality Over Quantity Bahrain Confidential interviews Matthias Hellweg, the General Manager of Ramada Adliya. Can you describe what a typical day in your job looks like?
Matthias Hellweg
I usually start the day with a sumptuous breakfast as breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a solid foundation for a busy day ahead. In addition, it is the best way to observe and to be in first contact with the guests, as every guest is having breakfast. At 8:30am, we have a morning briefing with the management team where the hotel performance of the previous day is reviewed and general issues are being discussed. The interesting thing about my job is that after the morning briefing there is no certain routine, every day is different. Of course there’salso a couple of meetings with guests, suppliers, contractors and team members daily.
What motivated you to go into the hospitality industry? I studied history and philosophy at university and financed myself by working as a part time waiter at the weekends in restaurants

and bars. After my studies I decided to shift my career and I did an apprenticeship with InterContinental Berlin. I found it fascinating to work with people and the hospitality industry gives you the chance to explore the world.
What do you think sets Ramada Adliya apart from the other hotels in the region? Ramada Adliya is the oldest branded hotel on the island, this year we will celebrate our 40th anniversary. We are a matured hotel with 100 employees from which more than 60% are with us for more than 10 years. Guests can be sure they’ll be in good hands and will receive professional service. We are well known for our hospitable approach and our standards as well as for the value for money.
At work, what puts a smile in your face? Interacting with guests and staff includes often funny situations as well but the biggest smile is of course, when you feel you are successful and the efforts of strategic planning are paying off.
What advice would you offer to those who are inspired to become successful in the hotel industry? You need to love what you are doing, you need to dedicate a lot of time to your job, and you need a positive mindset.
What is your favourite place to visit in Bahrain? I love breakfast on Friday’s at the Orangery Tea Room, it feels like being on vacation. n

The Beach Dress
Gulf
Aiste A Daubaras shares her eclectic musings in a light, yet warm-hearted fashion.
W
hen back in January, whilst a sunny beach weather was only a distant dream, one of the leading Bahraini dailies published an article announcing that “legal action could be taken against people who wear “indecent clothes” at public beaches and parks in Northern Governorate”, needless to say, it caused a bit of a stir in the local social media (well, according to Bahrain standards, anyway). Quite understandably, as such is our human nature, that we do not like to be told what to do. But this discussion got me pondering… do we indeed know how to dress for the beach? When anyone asks me for a style advice, I always advocate “less is more” maxim. But alas, by no means, should this be applied to the attire one wears sur la plage. Why? Simply because, and it pains my own vanity to admit it, perhaps only 0.7989 percent of entire population falls in the category of being toned, slim and under twenty-five. The rest of us, mere mortals, are better off concealing certain assets rather then flaunting them; and in my view, by doing so, significantly winning in the aesthetic looks stakes.
Just imagine, how an eye-catching, colourful sarong or a bold printed kaftan can adorn one’s beach appearance, whilst cleverly concealing something one might not be so eager to put on display. And it would also protect your modesty, should you accidentally bump into, say, your boss or that snooty,
“swimwear should protect your modesty” and your beach behaviour and dress “should be governed by consideration for others…
presumptuous lady from your charity circuit. Because, when you think about it, the beach is, in fact, a public area, where you strip down to the equivalent of your underwear. Nobody is saying, that you should not expose any bear skin. Do that by all means, when lying down and sunbathing. But parading up and dawn the beach in thongs, micro-briefs or anything that goes transparent upon the contact with a water, might have a whiff of, what French call, de mauvais goût. As my favourite etiquette Bible “Debrett’s A-Z of modern manners” very simply, yet
cleverly states, that “swimwear should protect your modesty” and your beach behaviour and dress “should be governed by consideration for others”. Interestingly enough, when I asked a few native Bahrainis about their view on this beach-dress restriction, not surprisingly, the majority asserted that they appreciate different cultures and feel that all of us, cohabitating on this tiny, sunny island, should learn to adapt to each other’s way of living and respect individual choices. See, all very friendly and nice. The question remains, do we… always… respect ourselves, by making certain choices as far as beach attire is concerned? Because whichever way you look at it, one can not negate the fact that being dressed appropriately and considerately, for any occasion, is one of the most important aspects of self-respect. So splash elegantly this summer… and do not forget your sunscreen! n

It is a special place for it is where tomorrow’s champions get their first taste of pure racing joy. BIKC offers a wide range of experiences for the avid karter, including a Formula One-inspired Mini Grand Prix. It can also accommodate night racing, as the facility boasts a series of flood lights of 150 lux located all over the track. The different track layouts allow two tracks to be run simultaneously, one dedicated for kids from 7 to 12 years of age while the second will be hosting teenagers and adults from 13 years of age.

We headed to the BIKC with a group of guys one afternoon to try this thrilling activity. Afterarrivingat the BIKC,we registered on the system and signed a disclaimer form (legal guardian’s signature is required for drivers below the age of 18). After the registration and payment, we proceeded to the changing rooms to get ready for the experience. The helmets, racing suits, gloves and balaclavas was provided by the BIKC. Once geared up, a track coordinator talked us through thetrack specifications, safety measures and explainedhow to operate the karts securely. There were two types of karts at the circuit: 9 HP and 13 HP. A single 15-minute drive costs BD10 for a 9HP kart and BD13 for a 13HP kart. If you want to experience the fun for a bit longer, a 2x15-minute drive costs BD18 for a 9 HP kart and BD23
for a 13 HP kart. As you finish a lap, the scoreboard shows you the time of your completion which makes the race more competitive for everyone. The experience was really fantastic because everything is properly laid out. There were moments we bumped and crashed on each others karts but it was astoundingly safe. Karting brings out the most competitive nature of everyone – the guys were surprisingly quick and really committed. Not only is this an enjoyable interactive activity because it’s also an adrenaline infused workout. Who knew driving a go kart could go a long way (literally and figuratively)! n

Home is where you love the food Home. One syllable, two vowels, two consonants, endless definitions. One thing that I have found to be certain, is that home is not just a house. I grew up in South Africa, and after matriculating from high school, I have called many countries home. In 2013, Bahrain introduced a multitude of cultures and the food that they enjoy. Since then, I have moved to the United States to study journalism at a Southern university. I have become a skilled Southern cook in the past few years, in my opinion at least. I can make a perfectly smooth gravy to accompany fluffy brown biscuits. I can brew the freshest batch of sweet tea you have ever tasted and I can make corn bread melt into a steaming hot bowl of chili. But this article isn’t for me to brag about how many times I have botched a batch of biscuits, or how many times I mistakenly called them scones, before I learned how to cook like a true Southern Belle. Neither is this a story about how I have abandoned my culture as an African by preferring American food. On the contrary, food has helped me fit in. Food has been my medium of communication for many years. When I arrive in a new country, I learn as much as I can about the local cuisine, so that I can become accustomed to how my new friends make themselves comfortable. I had such an experience in Bahrain this last year when I

visited my parents for holiday. When I walked through the welcoming doors of Melissa’s Emporium in Maqabah, I felt transported back to a corner café in South Africa. Somehow, a shop in the Middle East made me feel closer to my South African heritage than I have felt in years. The smell of boerewors with sheba drizzled over the top, resting on a mound of mieliepap hit me square in the face and my mind instantly travelled thousands of miles away. It takes something as simple as a smell to remind you of home. When I was in that shop, I bought candy that I hadn’t tasted since I was a little girl. And I sit, in the United States, eating a box of Astro’s that I bought in the Kingdom of Bahrain. I have never felt more at home. n

Bahrain, be yourself Recently, I have had occasion to visit Dubai twice. The first time was for pleasure, to see the musical West Side Story, at the Opera House… Which I must say was a magnificent performance of one of my all-time favourite musicals. The second visit was always going to be a mixture of business and pleasure; attending the Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature. Again, an excellent event and if you ever get the opportunity to attend, do so. This wasn’t my first time in Dubai, but I still couldn’t help noticing the glitz and glamour of the place, and that got me thinking, a dangerous thing to do at the best of times. Beneath the fantastic architecture, fountains and theme parks, there appears to be little else. The culture is subservient to the Dirham, lost in the sparkling lights. Sure, the old quarter is still there, with its rambling souqs, but it feels more museum than market. Dubai IS a theme park. It’s the noisy cousin, you know the one, loud and always cracking jokes; nice to see for a while, but you wouldn’t want to live with him. Bahrain is different. Bahrain is the favourite Uncle, the one whose visits are eagerly awaited, the one with whom time spent is time treasured. Bahrain still retains a culture that is linked to a bygone era, when honesty and integrity were more important than a fast buck; when strangers were made welcome, irrespective of wealth, or creed. Bahrain has a charm of its own, is more welcoming and cosy, not as keen to separate you from your money as its neighbour across the Gulf.
80 Bahrain Confidential May 2017
Tourism is calling, and why not? Tourist dollars are important to any country, and we could certainly benefit from a few more offerings of events such as West Side Story, but be careful what you wish for. It is all too easy to get caught up in the excitement of bringing in something new, and not notice the changes you have made are not necessarily for the better. I think this is what happened in Dubai. Somewhere along the way something fundamental changed and no one noticed.
Cocktail Party Guests had a lovely evening at Le Méridien Bahrain City Centre’s cocktail party.

Fasting or Feasting? Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, is nearly upon us, and due to commence later this month… It is certainly a special time of year when Muslims worldwide get up extra early to start fasting with a pre-dawn meal and abstain from all food, drink (including water!), smoking, and physical intimacy, until breaking fast at sunset each day. Also strictly forbidden are outbursts of anger, bad language, backbiting, gossiping etc. This holy month is a spiritual training camp of sorts: an annual exercise in practicing and developing self-restraint and empowering ourselves from within. Giving charity and sharing our privileges with others- in the form of money, food or other acts of kindness- is also a vital requirement of this holy month. Refraining from normal fulfillments like food and drinkthat we all take so much for granted- is meant to instill the value of these blessings, and empathy for those less fortunate than ourselves, to whom a meager meal may be a luxury. It is ironical that so many people seem to go on a feasting frenzy under the premise of Ramadan. In stead of learning contentment with less and simpler food, the focus shifts to an obsession with food and over indulgence. All around, the sanctity of this blessed month is trivialized with a commercial agenda promoting lavish Iftars and Ghabghas everywhere. The fasting is used as an excuse for ‘feasting’! Ramadan is supposed to evoke an awareness of the spiritual dimension of our lives, and develop good habits like patience and prayer. Patience is
82 Bahrain Confidential May 2017
necessary to restrain from instant self-gratification and extra prayers are the norm throughout the month. This is in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Quran, which explicitly states: “Seek help through patience and prayer. It is indeed exacting, but not for those who are humble in their hearts” (2:45). Let us not forget the underlying purpose of fasting and desist the temptation to feast. n

Hello May, Hello Stu(dying) Well, it’s almost the end of the academic year, and if you’re a GCSE student such as myself, don’t worry – I feel your pain… Because it’s around this time of year that teachers and parents alike begin to not-sosubtly hint at the esteemed art of studying. Yesterday evening, for example, I studied Chemistry. It’s funny. I say studied.
I am a firm believer of taking it easy, and I think that it’s crucial for one to have a de-stressing hobby and/or activity. Plus, if you’re studying for nineteen hours a day with five hours reserved for sleep – hello, are you even human? Calm yourself.
For a solid minute and a half, I thought back to the textbook I’d glanced at hours ago, now laying open on my desk as I binge-watch season three of Reign that I just happened to commence two months before the most critical exams I’ve sat will come around the corner like a truck going at 90. Understand, studying has multiple interpretations when you’re sixteen.
If life on earth was 100% work, at least two-thirds of the population would be an inhabitant of mars, I assure you.
Obviously, I want to be more productive, more proactive. But I also want sleep. And it’s difficult, it really is, having to balance it all. Coursework, controlled assessments, revision, an online life, social life, life full stop. It’s very draining nowadays. Everyone has their own way of de-stressing. Some shop, some do yoga, others procrastinate until the pain goes away. I write. And it’s strange, because although the mere thought of writing up notes for Science or History makes me want to cry (I’m only half-joking), writing a new poem or a new chapter for a possible new book (hmmm) or even an article for a magazine is very much my de-stresser.

On Being My Mother Every teenage girl at some point in her life, have felt annoyed to no end by her mother, have rolled her eyes too many times, mortified by her mother’s actions…
Now and without noticing, her words became mine, her way of waking up earlier than anyone, to enjoy a cup of coffee and some silence became mine, her way of rushing through the day, from one task to another became mine, even her way of dozing off while watching a movie has become mine too! Isn't perspective amazing? Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive, they can also tell dentists a lot about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk of chronic disease. When your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems. Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.
Gum and other diseases
There is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies. gum problems which diseases include: diabetes, leukemia, oral cancer, pancreatic cancer, heart disease and kidney disease. Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.
How to prevent it?
Seeing a dentist regularly 3 times a year helps to keep your mouth in top shape and allows your dentist to watch for developments that may point to other health issues. A dental exam can also detect poor nutrition and hygiene, growth and development problems, and improper jaw alignment. Provide your dentist with a complete medical history and inform him or her of any recent health developments, even if they seem unrelated to your oral health.

Brightening up the Fitbit Alta HR
New iPhone
Apple launches a red version of iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition comes in a red matte aluminum finish.
The best fitness tracker for common people.
M
ove to the beat of you with a slim heart rate wristband that tracks activity, sleep and exercise. Fitbit’s new Alta HR is one most people would wear not just everyday, but all night – and guess what? It’s worth every penny. At a glance, the Fitbit Alta HR looks like it predecessor, Alta and has almost the same features as the Charge 2 but with better battery life and 25% slimmer. The addition of a new heart rate monitor means that the HR is better equipped for workouts and day-to-day activities. What’s more impressive is that it uses the continuous heart rate monitoring to track your sleep cycles, so it can tell when you’re awake and what stage of sleep you’re in – light, deep, or REM. It also provides diagrams and graphs that will share insights regarding the information. Insomniacs, rejoice! A focus on sleep, wellbeing and heart health is what makes it standout than the rest of the brand’s trackers. Additionally, the long battery life and stylish design combined with improving app software makes the Alta HR the best all-around fitness tracker for most people. n
J
ust recently, Apple introduced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition. This vibrant red aluminum finish was launched in recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (RED). Apple has released red versions of its products as a part of the program but this is the first red iPhone. This gives customers an unparalleled way to contribute to the Global Fund and bring the world closer to an AIDS-free generation. After years of waiting, Apple is finally giving us a new color option. “The introduction of this special edition iPhone in a gorgeous red finish is our biggest (PRODUCT)RED offering to date in celebration of our partnership with (RED), and we can’t wait to get it into customers’ hands,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. However, this striking finish for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus has features identical to the originals. You still get the same 4.7-5.5-inch Retina displays respectively, Apple’s latest A10 Fusion processor, a 12-megapixel iSight camera, and IP67 water-resistance. Apple’s last color change to its lineup also involved a new glossy jet black finish for the iPhone. n

A
fter news erupted of a self-style ‘grammar vigilante’ changing shop signs in the dead of night in the UK, I couldn’t help but think that Bahrain could do with such an activist. I can barely drive a kilometer without some misspelt sign making me chuckle, however, as ever, I’m thirsty for the reason behind it. Surely sign-makers (signers!?) should be able to provide such feedback to halt any further misdemeanours cluttering up Bahrain. For instance, ‘FAMOUSE SUPERMARKET’ in Bahrain is famous for all the wrong reasons. It comes as no surprise that this has been continuously reposted throughout social media; however, do they have the last laugh and is this misspelling a clever marketing ploy? After all, I’m now party to providing some free ad space. You’re welcome! For me, when someone conjures up a piece of content that they clearly haven’t read over and it is so messed up that people can’t understand it I can’t help but take it personally. I think it’s disrespectful at best. They’re telling me that they didn’t care enough to fix it in the first place. Obviously not everyone is skilled in grammar and spelling, but, most of us aren’t completely illiterate either. You just don’t care enough to fix it. It’s not worth your time. I’m not worth your time. If that’s the case, okay, but I’ll be over here sipping on my coffee finding someone who does care about me.
Obviously not everyone is skilled in grammar and spelling, but most of us aren’t completely illiterate either.
ANYWAYS, whilst I’m amidst this rant, why do we feel the need to throw around such words and phrases such as ‘exclusive’, ‘first of its kind’ and ‘pioneers of...’? This came to light whilst I was walking around the Gulf Property Expo and everyone was pitching how his or her new business venture would come equipped with a new innovative water feature or canal based transport. Obviously the increase in industry in Bahrain is nothing to be sniffed at, but (and it’s a big but)… surely these kinds of tag lines are borderline plagiarism? Should the CEO’s battle it out over rock-paperscissors or is that too much of a common sense approach?
