A Legacy of Greatness A Tribute to One of the World’s Longest Serving Prime Ministers, HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.

T

he Kingdom of Bahrain mourns the passing of HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, who was one of the longest serving prime ministers in the world. Today, we are honouring his memory, legacy and significant developmental achievements to the island.

Prince Khalifa has served as the Prime Minister of Bahrain since 1970, taking office over a year before Bahrain's independence on August 15, 1971. In the late 1950’s and the outset of the sixties, late HRH the Prime Minister took up many key posts like presidency of the Education Council, chairmanship of the Monetary Council and the Administrative Council and more. His assumption of a wide range of

responsibilities played an essential role in establishing the nucleus of the state’s government body, launching the development march and laying a solid foundation for Bahrain’s economic growth. HRH Prince Khalifa has served as the Prime Minister of Bahrain since 1970, taking office over a year before Bahrain's independence on August 15, 1971. During the early years of his service as a prime minister, Bahrain saw a rapid development especially when the Kingdom sought to move beyond its dependence on oil. He worked on improving the living conditions of citizens and developing various economic sectors. He was one of the leading figures in making Bahrain a financial, service and tourism hub. HRH Prince Khalifa was not only a good politician but also a charismatic person. According to our sources, he enjoyed going on walks regularly as it gave him the opportunity to meditate and ponder on the issues that concern him. He had an affinity for agriculture, horticulture and was interested in birds and wildlife. He was also interested in ancient artifacts such as weapons and cars. However, the hobby that Prince Khalifa loved was drawing and photography.

These glimpses of the “old life” we once had, are also considered as signs of safety according to the expats we recently spoke with. “I am surprised at how the government swiftly responded to the virus starting the announcement of first case of COVID-19”, said James from the US. “However, I am more amazed at how the citizens and residents have full trust that the authorities’ move is for the good of the people”.

I am surprised at how the government swiftly responded to the virus starting the announcement of first case of COVID-19. The proactive measures taken early on by the concerned authorities are just one of the many reasons expats in Bahrain can rejoice and feel safe. “I feel secure. I am happy for my family here in Bahrain but I am worried for my fellow Filipinos who are in our home country right now”, said John. “We would like to plan a trip back to the Philippines but not until the virus is under control there”, he added.

18 Bahrain Confidential November 2020

Meanwhile, Muhamed, a Pakistani national said that it would be “appreciated if Bahrain communicated more about the support they can provide for expats who have been displaced or those who work low-paying jobs”. A number of expats like Muhamed, raised their exasperation online regarding the hardships of being laid off work during the pandemic. “Our monthly bills don't stop despite us not having work. Sometimes we consider going back to our country but we feel like the safety conditions aren’t as good there”, a dilemma Ana posted on social media. Grace, an expat from India felt that the restrictions imposed in Bahrain were appropriate and proportional to the threat brought by the coronavirus. She said she’s “happy to be living here when the pandemic took place”. She also added that the healthcare system here is a “precious asset” as it is easily accessible and available to anyone. Bahrain has announced early March that COVID-19 treatment is free for both residents and citizens. The Health Ministry also conducts daily coronavirus testing for free at several health centers, sports clubs and local markets. Overall, these expats relate to one another with their hopes of Bahrain being a COVID-free country sooner than later. n

Innocence and Experience Chanel launches its FW 2020 collection, Candeur et Expérience: Act II.

T

he changing face of femininity is something that Gabrielle Chanel understood all too well, having done more than most to shape a paradigm shift rom one version of womanliness to another. And so it was in her own story, the ingénue of the convent orphanage has become the worldly Mademoiselle of Rue Cambon. Letting character dictate what is seen was a touchstone for Chanel – and similarly for Lucia Pica, CHANEL Global and Creative Makeup and Color Designer. In the CANDEUR ET EXPÉRIENCE: ACTE ll collection, Lucia Pica plays with different ideas of character and femininity mainly through the medium of the colour most associated with the gender: pink. Here, the duality of women and femininity is emphasised, from innocence to experience. Pink is subverted, moving from a petulant innocence to provocation and transgression, travelling away from the merely pretty, to be something far more audacious and radical. This collection takes as its starting point LES 4 OMBRES eyeshadow palette Candeur et Expérience, from LE ROUGE • COLLECTION N°1 of Fall 2016. Wanting to explore the connotations, concepts and meanings behind the palette further, Lucia Pica builds a whole collection expanding on the themes of this product. From the dewy ingénue pink of the BAUME ESSENTIEL Rosée, to the stark dualities of light and dark femininity in LE VERNIS, the recurring passage from innocence to experience is evoked. n

A capitalist with an agenda

H

aving started my journey into activism at the age of 20, I got myself into a world I had no prior connection with. From designing and running social media awareness campaigns, to accidentally becoming a “food blogger, it was all new, exciting, and eye-opening.

As activists, I think the notion of making money through activism is almost a social taboo outside the motif of donations. However, I think I started off strong with my campaign, in that, I was working with businesses in the angle of promoting their products. Essentially offering marketing services in exchange for monetary sponsorships which I used to raise awareness over different online platforms, workshops, and talks which I conducted for free aimed at the public.

It probably has to do with my economics background, seeing as I evaluate the world and my decisions through the model of opportunity costs (what you must forgo in order to get something). The innate fault in that is it’s not as scientific of an approach being that we are irrational human beings. However, I admit this, along with my entrepreneurial mindset, helped me incorporate financial benefits into my social work and convince various stakeholders in the campaign of the same.

My solution was to leverage knowledge, trends, and data to help businesses expand plant-based and sustainable offerings. Thus encouraging and enabling people to make better choices for their health and the planet while making it profitable for businesses to do so. I’d like to think I’ve seamlessly transitioned from activist to a capitalist with an agenda. n

Two years and many shifts in strategy later, I focused more on the importance of economic forces to enable social movement. This is what I’ve learned; as activists we raise awareness through educating people on different social issues and hope they change behavior

However, capitalism is always one step ahead as they have abundant resources to maintain or sway public opinion and “control” or at it’s worst, have a higher propensity to influence behavior and consumption through subconscious mass advertising tactics, lobbying state and national policies in their interests at the detriment of public and environmental health. The plant-based sector is steadily growing, so I had to ask myself, where my time and resources are most

A few minutes west of Bahrain, Al Areen Palace & Spa by Accor is a kiss of paradise – a beautiful destination tucked away from the hustle bustle of the city center.

There are three kinds of villas that cater to different guests: Desert Pool Villa, Royal Pool Villa and the Family Pool Villa.

The resort boasts 78 uniquely designed pool villas that feature an open air heated swimming pool and jet-pool, a sprawling master bedroom, and en-suite facilities that include an oversized infinity bathtub. There are three kinds of villas that cater to different guests: Desert Pool Villa, Royal Pool Villa and the Family Pool Villa.

Arriving at the hotel The check-in process was just as seamless as all of our previous stays. We were greeted with friendly staff who looked after us exceptionally until check-out. We admired the beautiful waterways and scenic ambiance on our way to our villa. The sounds of nature accompanied us while we excitedly waited for what is yet to come!

Enjoying the amenities Our villa left us mesmerized with its Arabian charm and sophistication. It was a beautiful blend of classic Middle Eastern architecture and stylish contemporary accents. But what we really loved about the villa was the privacy that it evoked – staying there felt very intimate without feeling confined.

The in-villa amenities were superb and the expanse of the place was just what we needed for a time to disconnect. We spent a couple of hours lounging in or by the picturesque pool and listening to birds chirping!

Indulging in the cuisine We had our meals brought to us in the villa. Our server, Rio, even put on a performance for us! We had a massive seafood platter along with some refreshing mocktails for dinner. For breakfast, we had one of the highlights of our stay – the floating breakfast. It was beautifully laid out and was very Instagram-mable! This type of breakfast is popular in hotels in Bali but we were very impressed that it is also available in Bahrain!

Overall, our stay at Al Areen was one of the best (if not, the best) getaways we’ve had without having to jump on a plane. Everything including the smallest of details was just perfect. Food Court Ethics vs. Manners You've seen it; and you’ve probably done it, too: I’m talking about leaving a tray of wrappers and leftover food at a mall's food court.

away his, and my other friend left everything there looking like a tornado went through it. Being me, I had to call him out on it (in what can only be described as banter in colorful vocabulary); he argued that the person cleaning has a job indoors, in air-conditioning, and is able to support themselves and their families by clearing tables; and if everybody cleaned up after themselves, they'd lose their bread and butter…. Interesting.... I never thought of it from that perspective before; I'm a firm believer of assimilation and not expecting my culture or my way of life to be accommodated when I travel or move; as hard as it was not to clean up after myself, I always understood that that’s how it’s done here.

N

ow that Covid restrictions are loosening and indoor dining is open again; I ventured out with friends to wander aimlessly at one of the malls, just like we did in the pre-Corona days. After smelling all the candles and window shopping at every store, we ended up at the food court and ordered a feast from the fast food joints there. When we finished, I collected my trash and neatly placed it on my tray; my friend got up and threw

My other friend disagreed, using language and calling us names that I cannot directly quote here; he argued that it’s about manners and cleanliness. The drive home was interesting as the debate continued; all the points were valid and I didn’t believe any of us was in the wrong here, but I definitely did not expect the day to end with a debate on malls’ food court ethics and manners. n By Bahrain Food Reviews BFR is a food blogger and meme connoisseur /bahrainfoodreviews /Bahrain.food.reviews

Turning Over a New Leaf 52-year old Bahraini homemaker, Balqees Abdulla recounts how going vegan saved her life.

“I

had read that eliminating dairy from one’s diet helps,” says Balqees who decided to embrace veganism owing to chronic health issues. She had suffered from uterus related complications for 10 long years, leading to anemia. But only four months after she switched to a plant-based diet, her results came back normal. It’s been almost four years since she turned over a new leaf (pun intended) and Balqees is loving her new life.

Balqees realized that a vegan diet not only kept her illness away and test results in check but also made her feel better.

Lifestyle changes can be challenging and Balqees admits that she did face some discouragement especially at family gatherings when she would be forced to try out non-vegetarian dishes. “I used to oblige and take small bites only to feel guilty and sluggish the next day.” Balqees realized that a vegan diet not only kept her illness away and test results in check but also made her feel better; she was far more

50 Bahrain Confidential November 2020

active, slept better and got rid of hair fall problems. These reasons motivated her to continue on the green path. Balqees recalls that she didn’t face any difficulties in terms of resources. “Vegan ingredients are easily available at reasonable prices in supermarkets in Bahrain,” she says, adding that the island is also home to many vegan restaurants including Plant Café in Hamala, Anais Café in Bu Ghazal and Eighty Thirty in Al Aali Mall. There are brands such as @chocoolatemaker on Instagram that deliver homecooked vegan meals including desserts and offer weekly and monthly packages too. The internet is a treasure-trove of recipes and Balqees started following Instagram accounts including @vegan. onlynajla, @vegan_nutrition_ and @loly_vegan where she got useful tips, which helped her create her own dishes. “There are a lot of alternatives,” she says, “from meatless burgers, nuggets and hotdogs to non-dairy cheese and milk (soya, almond and oats).” Balqees’ family is a huge fan of her vegan cakes, ice creams and chocolates but Balqees on the other hand prefers to stick to her salads and vegetables. She also recommends using less oil, and eliminating refined sugar and white flour from one’s diet. n The article is based on an interview by Melissa Nazareth

P

andesal is the quintessential bread roll of the Philippines; it is soft and fluffy and covered with breadcrumbs. La Merienda’s version of the classic bread has an irresistible flavor profile and an IG-worthy presentation. Just recently, we had the chance to talk to Maria Veronilla, La Merienda’s owner to know more. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What inspired you to create "La Merienda"? My name is Maria. I am 25-years-old and I'm the owner of La Merienda. ‘La Merienda’ started from my love for cooking and baking. The ube queso pandesal along with the other pastries I bake, used to be my meriendas (snacks). What is so special about your "Ube Queso Pandesal"? The whole thing is special since everything was made from scratch. However, what stands out most is my

52 Bahrain Confidential November 2020

There are a lot of home bakers in Bahrain offering their products at the moment, what makes you stand out from the rest? Creativity and passion. I try to revive and recreate old recipes and give them a twist as much as possible. The goodies that I come up with in La Merienda are actually inspired by either what I have enjoyed eating in the past or something that is underrated in the market. I'm looking at what everyone else is doing and I do the complete opposite. I do my best to be different, daring and inspirational. Do you have any tips for aspiring bakers? No one is born to be a great baker, one learns by doing. Experiment on old recipes and try to recreate them with your personal stamp. You'll never get bored when you try something new since limitations only exist if you let them. Where can our readers purchase your products? My products are currently available at Foodlab in Riffa and Indulge in Arad, Muharraq. On a different note, where is your favorite place in Bahrain and why? Zallaq. I grew up here and I love how tranquil the place is. It's like the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, plus, I love the beach! n

Profile

Name:

Amal Darwish

Profession:

Marketing and Community Affairs Manager at the American School of Bahrain (Founding Member)

A short talk with interesting people living in Bahrain!

Nationality: Bahraini

Personality Profile What made you want to pursue a career in marketing? I always had a passion for arts and creativity, but I also had a huge interest in analysis and processing Information. Hence, marketing was the perfect career for me because it satisfies my cravings for creativity and simultaneously allows me to analyze, plan and action. How is marketing in the education sector different? What makes it special? Working in the educational sector in itself is satisfying. Watching children learn happily and grow every day is very exciting. I find that to be especially true in the American School of Bahrain where students are provided with a very positive environment to learn and improve. Hence, I feel like I am working to “promote” a bigger cause; supporting education and helping parents find the suitable school for their children. In addition, I often find that children have a lot to teach us as adults. We all need, from time to time, to visit our inner child and keep it alive! How do you find balance between your professional and personal life? I love what I do and it makes it possible for me to multitask and enjoy the two worlds! Besides that, I make sure that I dedicate enough time for my friends and family and of course I try to treat myself

54 Bahrain Confidential November 2020

with a good “me time!”. This is when I practice my hobbies and feed my different interests. Having some balance helps you function better at work and at your everyday life. Can you recommend a must-try experience when visiting Bahrain? If you are new to Bahrain (or even if you are not!), try driving or walking through the old Bahraini villages. Speak to the traditional Bahraini people and experience the simple and less-sophisticated side of the modern lifestyle in this country. This will give you a relaxing state of mind and will help you discover the true essence of Bahrain. What’s one thing you can never live without? Faith would be the one thing I could never let go. With faith, everything else falls where it should be. Favorite book: Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead. This book is for Brene Brown who I admire. A saying/motto that you live by: “The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open.” Chuck Palahniuk. n
