Stop thinking in terms of “to-do” lists! Get away from a time-and-effort mindset. Sure, you are busy, everyone can count on you, and you are exhausted at the end of the day. But the truth is that this kind of lifestyle means you are living a reactive life.

Review Junkie

Dear Boo Hoo – please don’t cry! We understand that the heart wants what the heart wants. Actually we’re wondering why the rest of our dear readers who didn’t win a prize AT ALL didn’t come to us with their tiny little rant. By the way there are some really awesome brunches happening around town – turn to the back pages to check out Bahrain 101 listings – and when you do go, have a glass of grape on us, will’ya!

Dear Cool Punk – you write very well for someone who doesn’t read much! Fancy an internship with us? And thanks for reminding us how hard we work. Did you know that the reading statistics, apparently are one book per child per year in the Middle East as opposed to 15 books per child per year in the UK? Well, we do our bit to encourage the reading habit by publishing informative and entertaining stories – but will keep your suggestion in mind.

Dear Writer – how we envy your dream job. Sadly, it’s called a ‘dream’ job for a reason Any way, we’ll give you a shout after all our full-time writers have enjoyed a review tour at least once. In the meantime, why don’t you share a few samples of your work on info@arabianmagazines.com and yeah, we sincerely hope all your dreams come true.

I won one of your competitions but am unhappy. I actually wanted to win a five-star dinner – was that so difficult to accommodate? I appreciate the magazine’s gesture for having picked me as one of their winners but some good food would’ve made me happier. Boo Hoo

I was going through a few of your magazines and boy, do you have black print crawling all over it! I don’t have the time to read so much and to be honest no one else does either. Why don’t you just have more competitions – wink wink! – and a few short articles may be? Cool Punk

Tell us what you think, email us on info@arabianmagazines.com

Late Endings David Hollywood’s short poem this month suggests that by simply reflecting upon lost opportunities and then acknowledging them we have the chance to fulfill our aspirations - if we do it now - because it is never too late. To procure a feeling, not too late, Is to start what’s inchoate, And then to know it’s here as fate, Is to feel, appreciate, That what we harvests, not too late.

GITEX 2015

October 2015

Founders Ahmed Alsaba, Nazar Abubaker and Marcel Al Mutawa were inspired to come up with this idea when they got tired of not knowing what to do every weekend. They call Vitee an events discovery app which allows you to search for fun activities in Bahrain in real time and even shows you events that are happening closest to you. Vitee currently features fun to-do stuff by few of the most popular event promoters in Bahrain including Coral Bay, The RitzCarlton Bahrain Hotel & Spa, Malja and more!

What started out as an idea is now an official business running through the support of Rukn and has created jobs for fresh graduates in the Kingdom. Vitee is a great example of dedication and ambition by Bahraini youth.

HEYA-BEYA

This century-old tradition is a common practice in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia but also popular across the GCC. Children are encouraged to watch over their plants for days before casting them into the sea on the eve of Eid Al Adha. Considered the first lesson of sacrifice in the life of a child, Heya-beya is said to date back to the Dilmun era.

W

hen I see Huey for the first time during the interview, what strikes me about his personality is his humility and simplicity. It’s commendable for someone who has achieved so much at such a young age! Born as Abdulrahman and better known today as Huey Flava, this selftaught B-Boy has been dancing for the past 9 years. When asked what inspired him to take to this art form, he says, “I once watched a few kids dancing in the garden and it all started from there.” Huey is also into house dance but his niche is break-dance. So, how does he learn? After all, everyone needs to learn from someone. “When I travel for regional competitions, I attend workshops conducted by international artists who have a lot of knowledge and experience.” So far Huey has travelled to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and around the Middle East. When he’s not competing, Huey is

26

practicing with other Bahrainbased B-Boys. “Practice is very important and I try to dedicate more than two hours a day,” he says. So what’s a typical day like for Huey? “I have a full-time job after which I head to Malja in the evening and meet the boys. If I’m too tired I just head home and practice in my room.” When asked about the most difficult part of being a dancer, Huey says, “It can get tough when there aren’t too many shows happening. All we do during this time is practice which can be a tad bit demotivating. But a good B-Boy never stops dancing, no matter what!” There are very few break-dance competitions in Bahrain and Huey believes there is a need for the right people to come forward and support dance and art in general. “Thanks to Malja we now have a formal space to practice in but an exclusive studio for dancers would be great! Also, international dancers need to be flown

in to conduct workshops so local dancers like us can learn and get new perspectives – that’s how we grow.” We talk about his experience at the Red Bull BC One Cypher. Why do you think you won? Well, breaking is not just about flips, it’s about dance and innovation. You need to know the basics – toprock moves, footwork, freezes, and powermoves – and once you’ve aced them you must try to bring your essence to the dance. In addition to his day job and being a competing B-Boy, Huey also teaches aspirant break-dancers. “I get invited by local gyms to teach kids and have about 10 students now.” He goes on to share a few tips with B-Boys and B-Girls: practice, practice, practice! And be open to criticism no matter how good you think you are because that’s the only way you’ll learn.

We lead such stressful lives, working long hours at office, taking care of the kids and running errands for the house each day. Every now and then it’s wise to take a break so that we don’t burn out. In addition to enjoying treatments influenced by ancient Indonesian, Indian and Thai methods of rejuvenation, FSHBB has a well equipped, unisex gym which is one of the first in the region to offer antigravity yoga.

Spa-licious Member!

What’s trending?

FSHBB provides the best possible offers to valued guests who enlist in an exclusive membership programme. We found out what all the classy people on the island are swearing by at FSHBB. SODASHI! Used to describe wholeness, purity and radiance, the Sanskrit word ‘sodashi’ was adopted by the skincare product line’s Founder, Megan Larsen who has a unique background in aromatherapy, biochemistry and Ayurveda. These products contain only the purest essential oils for rejuvenation, care and nurture. However, one particular ingredient stands out among the rest, oud. An extremely rare, expensive natural oil derived from a resin that can only be found in the heart of ancient trees, this oil has myriad qualities and is effectively used in medicines, ceremonies, perfumes and now, beauty products. The oud treatments at The Spa are locally-inspired as the oil is native to the Middle East.

Health Updates Developments in Cancer Treatment • New short-term breast cancer risk prediction models that aim to help increase cancer detection are underway. There are two approaches: a rule-in approach for identifying women who are excluded from current breast MRI screening guidelines but have a higher risk of developing or harboring hidden breast cancers, which can be detected by breast MRI; and a rule-out approach for women with an elevated lifetime cancer risk but no imminent risk. Image features related to bilateral asymmetry of mammographic tissue density and/ or MRI tissue enhancement signals of the left and right breasts of the same woman will be analysed to the models. Researchers will assemble a large and diverse image database for which nearly 10,000 images will be studied over a five-year period. • Finding and treating breast cancer in its earliest stages can oftentimes lead to a cure. For most women with early-stage breast cancer, a lumpectomy is performed followed by weeks of radiation therapy to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Intra-operative radiation therapy, or IORT, focuses the radiation on the tumor during surgery as a single-

46 Bahrain Confidential October 2015

dose, and has proven effective as whole breast radiation.

Fast-track, Anti-attack

• Chemotherapy, the only form of treatment available for treating some cancers, destroys cancer cells and harms healthy cells at the same time. A promising new approach for advanced cancer selectively delivers cytotoxic agents to tumor cells while avoiding normal, healthy tissue.

Angiotensin-receptor neprilysin inhibitor, or ARNI, has been granted “fast-track status” by the FDA because of its impressive survival advantage over the ACE inhibitor enalapril, the current “gold standard” for treating patients with heart failure. The unique drug compound represents a paradigm shift in heart failure therapy.

Blood Tests without Needles!

Suicide Headache

Have the days of needles and vials come to an end? The new art of blood collection uses a drop of blood drawn from the fingertip in a virtually painless procedure. Test results are available within hours of the original draw and are estimated to cost as little as 10% of the traditional Medicare reimbursement.

Cluster headaches are said to be one of the most torturous medical conditions, in part because there are very few effective options for relief. In fact, the agony can be so extreme, this syndrome is also known as “suicide headache,” because many sufferers end up taking their own lives. Thanks to a Norwegian study, the search for an effective treatment may finally be over! Seven doctors studied the behavior of Botox on 10 cluster sufferers over the course of 24 weeks. The number of headaches suffered was significantly reduced, with five out of 10 patients experiencing at least a 50 per cent reduction in attack frequency. Botox works by blocking nerve signals, preventing them from contracting which may have stopped the pressure build-up in the sphenopalatine ganglion.

Leadless Cardiac Pacemakers Since 1958, the technology involved in cardiac pacemakers hasn’t changed much. A silver-dollar-sized pulse generator and a thin wire, or lead, inserted through the vein kept the heart beating at a steady pace. Leads, though, can break and crack, and become infection sites in 2 per cent of cases. Vitamin-sized wireless cardiac pacemakers can be implanted directly in the heart without surgery and eliminate malfunction complications and restriction on daily physical activities.

EXCLUSIVE

Breast Cancer Research Bahrain Confidential talks to Dr Lamia Ebrahim & Dr Suzanne Abbas of the Radiology Department at Salmaniya Medical Complex about the challenges the disease imposes and the need of the hour. Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer related deaths in women worldwide. Today, the average age of patients in Arab countries appears to be far younger and the sickness at a more advanced stage than in western countries. This has important implications on screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Statistical data among Arab nations is scarce – this is critical for implementing effective and specific management strategies.

What are the challenges we face?

No two breast cancers are alike and there is a large degree of genetic diversity within individual tumors. Patients do not all respond in the same way to cancer treatment. This makes diagnosis and tailoring individual treatment strategies, challenging.

What is the need of the hour?

New targeted therapies are needed. Genetic profiling of cancer stem cells can improve the clinical management of patients which could enhance the development of personalised anticancer therapy. Population screening and

48 Bahrain Confidential October 2015

genetic testing of high risk groups plays an important role too. Further, having a comprehensive cancer registry will enable the adaptation of new health policies, and the implementation of effective and specific cancer control strategies. It will also enhance comparative communication between peers. Advances in breast cancer imaging and intervention are a key component in disease management. Imaging also enables objective evaluation of potential therapies, which will improve patient outcome. On this note, we would like to thank Think Pink for their significant contribution toward the new MRI scanner and molecular imaging suite currently being installed at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC). This will surely serve a large patient population.

How can our readers help?

We can all help by spreading awareness. Patient education can be achieved through a variety of channels like health care providers, media, breast cancer survivors and community leaders. Breast care programmes can include child care services, home care, transport services,

financial support, community support centers that include volunteers and support groups. Early diagnosis and treatment is key; the Ministry of Health provides accessible screening services and has highly qualified and specialised staff to help the community. We also need to overcome the social and cultural barriers which hinder patients from seeking adequate medical advice. Funding and training local research is an important and ongoing strategy which is highly supported by the Ministry.

Are there any newly applied interventional techniques?

Yes – the recent application of new image guided interventional procedures in the Radiology department at SMC such as stereotactic core biopsies, and the introduction of breast marker clips. These are less invasive, less time consuming, and more cosmetic as compared to surgery and will boost patient confidence and improve compliance. SMC is a pioneer in adapting these techniques in the country.

The Changing Face of Muharraq Urbanising Bahrain’s ‘Second Capital’ At the turn of the millennium, a vision emerged for a new, sustainably-developed city for the Kingdom of Bahrain; which would make the previously unrealised dream of owning a high-quality home of their own, possible for thousands of families. That vision was Diyar Al Muharraq, which is now becoming a reality, opening doors for investors from all over the world to bring new concepts and brands to Bahrain. At the heart of that vision is Marassi Al Bahrain (MAB), the mixed-use waterside urban community that will sit on the South-Eastern shores of Diyar Al Muharraq. Ten years ago, Bahrain was radically different from the modern and diverse regional hub we see today. With one central business district, the island shores finished close to the airport runway in Muharraq, and finance options for expatriates or lower-income individuals to purchase property were limited. There was a need for internationally competitive

urban real estate options on a significant scale for the property sector to keep pace with Bahrain’s modernisation. Thus, Diyar Al Muharraq was conceived with MAB now being the cornerstone of that solution. A highly distinguished urban project by Eagle Hills, a private investment company headquartered in Abu Dhabi, MAB is a smarty city spread over 876,000sqm. Think stunning hotels and restaurants; clean, light and airy apartment building; buzzing business centres; and sports, leisure and entertainment facilities – all within one community.

A Glimpse of the Future

MAB’s Sales Centre will open to the public in Q4 2015. Customers will then have access to all elements of the project including the 2,000sqm Exhibition Centre, 600m-long strip of white sandy beach, outdoor movie screenings, playground zones, gardens and other amenities.

Shop in Style

Shopping can never go out of style! MAB’s 250,000sqm retail space spilling onto the 1km white sand-beaches that bound the site, on completion, will comprise the largest integrated retail experience in the Kingdom. It will be interconnected with two world-class hotels - The Address & Vida, both offering exclusive access to beaches and a waterfront promenade, and spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf.

New-To-Market Hospitality

Eagle Hills are keen to enhance Bahrain’s hospitality offering, and recently announced that there will be two newto-market brands operated by Emaar Hospitality Group within MAB - The Address Hotels + Resorts and Vida Hotels and Resorts. Bahrain is their first regional expansion outside the UAE.

What the well-designed smart city will look like 54 Bahrain Confidential October 2015

real estate “Marassi Al Bahrain will have significant benefits for the Bahraini economy, in terms of both job creation and boosting tourism. People are given more confidence in the project due to our partnership with Eagle Hills, who have a track record of creating smart urban hubs.” – Dr Maher Al Shaer, CEO of Diyar Al Muharraq & Managing Director of Marassi Al Bahrain The Address will feature 110 rooms, with oceanfront restaurants and lounges, meeting facilities, a spa & wellness centre, outdoor pool and deck areas. Guests will have direct access to the lifestyle mall and a dedicated beachfront area managed by the hotel. A few nights stay doesn’t seem enough? There will be 130 residential serviced apartments at the hotel, ranging from 1 to 3-bedrooms, overlooking the waterfront and available for purchase as well as rental. Vida Marassi Al Bahrain hotel is a smarthotel concept, and will have 160 rooms - or ‘smart-hubs’ - intended to let inspiring minds connect. Also on the beachfront, with direct access to the lifestyle mall and offering sea-facing views, the hotel’s amenities will include elegant dining destinations, poolside F&B, a business centre, a spa & wellness centre, and outdoor pool. Vida Hotels and Resorts will also manage 140 branded serviced residences of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom units.

What the plush lifestyle malls will look like

What the restaurants alongside beaches, with stunning views will look like

Sustainable Green Development

Developed to the highest standards of sustainability, MAB focuses on minimising waste and maximising natural cooling through innovative design and carefully considered urban planning. 170,000sqm of open space and park areas will create a lush verdant heart within an urban centre.

An Investor’s Dream

Upon completion, MAB will be home to 22,000 residents and provide commercial facilities to employ over 1,200 people. The smartly designed architecture of the development will combine traditional, local and regional cultural elements with contemporary facilities, envisioning a timeless style.

Though the region does not lack real estate investment opportunities, the track record of Eagle Hills, as a developer, instills confidence that the stalled projects we have sadly come to expect, are a million miles away from Marassi’s development plan. New regulations in the Kingdom’s real estate sector that were introduced to prevent half-finished developments have been on Marassi’s radar from the start, and all funds are already in place to take it to completion. Phase 1 of the project will be finished in 2019, and 51 per cent of the land is being offered for development to investors – within the master guidelines of course.

From there, 25 selected finalists will go head to head at Dubai Autodrome to be assessed on all aspects of their driving ability and car control by a panel of judges, including Infiniti Red Bull Racing Test & Reserve driver Sebastien Buemi. One Middle East winner will then join winners from Russia and the UK for the ultimate prize. They will be trained in the Infiniti Red Bull Racing simulator at the team’s factory in Milton Keynes, then flown to Dubai to test drive a real, fully race specification Formula One car with personal guidance from Daniil Kvyat. After that, they will experience a VIP hospitality weekend for two at the Grand Prix from the 27th – 29th November. The ‘Ultimate Drive’ campaign will close on 10th October. Fitness Talk

Pop Culture ME

Craig Heslop shares tips on the right way to burn lard.

Nadine Compton discovers her ideal version of the region’s oldest appetiser.

There is a misconception that ‘the gym’ is the answer to weight problems. The truth is, it’s not. While hitting the gym helps people achieve weight loss goals, it does not address the root cause of obesity. In my opinion, lifestyle has the biggest impact on body size and shape, not food or programmed exercise.

Walk the Talk

The first principle of healthy living is ‘walkabout’. Slow aerobic activity is an efficient method to metabolise fat as a fuel source. Optimising vitamin D levels is another benefit. While the traditional Australian Aboriginals may have covered an average of 16km per day, that might be a little extreme for us today. The average westerner falls incredibly short of any distance that promotes optimal health – I’ve seen average figures of around 4km. A fifteen minute walk in the morning and evening would be great place to start.

Limited Technology Time

Technology makes our life easier but not necessarily better. Ask yourself three questions: Have you watched TV today? Have you checked social media today? Have you driven today? If you answered yes then you probably spend a lot of time on your rump. It is simply about being mindful of our actions and then being disciplined to follow the schedule. If you spend an hour each day at the gym- well done! Unfortunately, seven out of one hundred and sixty-eight hours is only 4 per cent of your week. What do you do during the remaining 96 per cent of your time? Surely, this is more important then labouring at the gym.

Live by the Light

It simply involves falling in line with natural circadian rhythm. Unless you are a honeybadger, you must be active during the day and sleep during the night. Even my chickens are diurnal and go to bed at around 7pm only to wake up at 5am without an alarm clock. Between 10pm to 2am, we secrete a growth hormone which enables us to build muscle, recover and metabolise fat.

For all the years that I’ve lived in the Middle East, I’ve never made my own hummus. I looked online for the perfect recipe and since I couldn’t find one, here’s one that I came up with that seems to hit the spot for me.

Ingredients

• 1 can (425gms) of chickpeas, rinsed and peeled • ¼ cup chickpea water from the can • 3 peeled garlic cloves • ¼ cup lemon juice • ½ tsp. salt • ½ cup tahini paste • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil When I was in grade 2, an Egyptian boy in my class came to school one day for 'show and tell' with his father and enough chickpeas for all the students in the room. His father said that when he was young, he and his friends would put chickpeas in their mouths and remove the shell with their teeth, shooting the peas at each other. (Cue: eighteen 7-year olds trying to do this, as their teacher tries to stop them in vain). As much as I wanted to do that for this recipe, I decided to just peel them by hand. You don't have to peel them of course; it just makes for a creamier hummus.

Directions

Using a food processor, blend the chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, and salt until smooth. Make sure you scrape the sides and bottom of the

container to catch any stray chickpeas that have escaped the chopping blade. Add the canned chickpea water, tahini paste, and extravirgin olive oil. Blend until creamy and well combined. Dribble more olive oil on top and sprinkle paprika. Add a spring of mint and a couple olives just to make it look pretty. Eat with pita bread and you're good to go! I was just happy that it tasted just the way I wanted it to.

Movie Reviews:

Confidential @ The Movies: The Man from UNCLE As a Guy Ritchie action-comedy, it works. The jabs at fictional representations of espionage are delivered with near perfect timing. They seem to have cherry picked all the things people imagine as from the era of the 1960s. The result is that the clothes are just too chic, the set pieces too on the nose. The fashion, the accessories... even the cars. Especially the cars! How could any depiction of the glamour of the sixties be complete without one Jaguar E Type? In our world where terrorist groups are committing heinous acts of barbarity that would put any of UNCLE's supervillain enemies to shame, where spy thrillers like "Homeland" had

to up the ante because reality is scarier than the fictional world they have created, where the James Bond 007 franchise lost its playfulness long ago and just keeps getting grittier and grittier. The movie is cast satisfyingly well enough, with Armie Hammer's Ilya Kuryakin projecting a cold lethality that may have been a bit much. Luckily, this is a bickering buddy movie, where Henry Cavill's Napoleon Solo balances things out with borderline insufferable calm smoothness. In all, "The Man from UNCLE" is an enjoyable espionage comedy and an escapist fare which just happens to be seemingly set in our past.

Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation The fifth time out for Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), and in many ways, it feels like writer/director Christopher McQuarrie was asked to make a movie that serves as a summing up of everything that's come before this, laying out various highlights from the previous films. Hunt is on the trail of a shadowy organization called The Syndicate, and seems to find himself outclassed at every turn, and pretty soon, he is a man on the run and underground. The kick of the movie is watching him start to slowly put his team back together. McQuarrie takes full advantage of the chemistry between Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise, who are a positively delightful comedy team, especially when grievous 100 Bahrain Confidential October 2015

bodily harm to one or both of them is involved. Oh‌ and you know that plane stunt that has been the cornerstone of the entire campaign for the film? That's the first eight minutes of the film. It's hilarious. It's gigantic. And it's not a spoiler. That's how you do it. McQuarrie understands the comic value of Cruise's size, and he knows that the bigger the thug he bounces off of Cruise, the funnier it gets. As with most of what he does, Cruise always feels like he's giving it everything he's got, and he continues to make Ethan Hunt's adventures interesting after two decades in the role.

5YOUTHINGS CAN DO TO BE

HAPPIER RIGHT NOW Most people are wrong about the things that will make them happy. Professor Paul Dolan says it’s acutally quite simple.

arning more money; bagging the fabulous job you have always wanted or travelling the world might seem like the key to happiness. But according to happiness expert Prof Paul Dolan, making simple changes are the key to bringing joy and purpose into your life. Dolan, a professor at the London School of Economics and government advisor on how to make the population more contented, claims that many of the things people believe will make them happy are fleeting and can actually alter their lives in a negative way. So although that coveted promotion may seem like the key happiness, it is likely to bring longer hours and more stress. Likewise travelling the world will separate people from loved ones. However he has identified five ways to be immediately happier. They are: 1. Listening to a favourite piece of music 2. Spending five more minutes with someone you like 3. Going outdoors 4. Helping someone else 5. Having a new experience Prof Dolan says: “It’s important to change what you do, not how you think. “You should listen to music that you like listening to. That has a substantial effect on your mood. Your brain literally lights up. There is no other stimulation like music to arouse the brain.

We’re really always happier if we are focussing on the person we are with and the thing we are doing right now. “You spend five minutes more with someone you like and go outdoors. And helping someone is important. Helping other people is a very selfish thing to do. It’s a great source of happiness for you. Just randomly help someone and see the difference. “And having a new experience is really important. The great thing about new experiences is they actually slow time down. It’s why life feels so slow for children because they are experiencing new things all the time. So if you want to slow down time then have as many new experiences as you can.” Prof Dolan also advocates the importance of ‘priming’ and suggests changing passwords to affirmations to help keep goals in the memory. So if someone wanted to stop spending money they could change their banking password to ‘stopspendingcash’.

Making public promises is also a good way at achieving goals, Prof Dolan recommends. So announcing a plan to lose weight, give up smoking or stop drinking so much on Twitter makes people more likely to keep it up. He believes it is important to ‘design’ an environment which makes happiness goals more achievable, even if it means cutting yourself off from friends who promote bad habits. “Most things we do are made through habit and auto-pilot because the brain is forming habit-loops all the time to make us more efficient. It’s why you can’t remember if you have locked the house or switched the gas off. “So it’s important to design an environment that makes happiness possible. Willpower won’t work. You need to make it easier to yourself. You need to think what makes you happy and work out how to change your environment to allow you do to that more easily. “So if meeting up with friends makes you happy then make it once a week on a Tuesday or once a month, because it’s far harder to opt out of something than to opt in.” “Most things we think will make us happy won’t. We’re really always happier if we are focussing on the person we are with and the thing we are doing right now. So make that something you enjoy.”
