his December, Fuel Events in association with House of Noir, one of London’s most exclusive invitation-only theatrical event concepts, will bring Noir Privé, the most sensual masquerade ball of our age, to Bahrain and the GCC for the first time. Britt Sanja Jusic, Founder & CEO of House of Noir, will fly down spectacular, top London performers and one of London’s most internationally recognised female DJs for this event. The DJ will play her unique blend of deep bass house sounds. House of Noir launched in London, in 2012, and within a short span of time had a massive fan following. In fact quite a few event organisers even ‘copied the ideas’. “What set us apart from most others at the time is that we offered unique, immersive, multi-sensory theatrical experiences complete with visuals, sounds, scents, sensual fire acts and more,” says Britt. “Guests were not mere spectators but enjoyed interacting with the performers.” That is something Britt

Noir Privé even caters to clients looking to host exclusive private and corporate events. House of Noir’s exclusive soirees witness around 200 to 300 guests, all VVIPs. It’s also worth mentioning that the performances are carefully created, pre written and well rehearsed, highlighting the brand’s commitment to quality.

For instance she used to be afraid of accepting big investments. “Handling investors’ money is a responsibility, which brought with it a certain pressure to ensure a successful event,” she says. Today, Britt is confident than ever before and leads a carefully recruited, highly skilled team few of which will accompany her during her visit to Bahrain for the much-awaited launch – stay tuned!

events SWEET JILLY DESIGNS This festive season, buy an Eastern inspired tunic for a good cause! Jill Boggiss, who lives on the Island, is a lover of all things fashion. She fell in love with the vibrant textiles from the many stores in Bahrain, and creative tailoring found here, when she came to the Kingdom 9 years ago. Jill then decided to fashion stylish clothes for ladies who want something special, not run of the ‘mall’, but can’t wade through the fabric stores themselves, and who want a piece that wont cost the earth. She got together with a few tailors and recently even organised a charity pop up, ‘Kaftans for a Cause’, the proceeds of which were used toward Bahrain’s popular ‘Biryani Party’. In the future, Jill hopes to combine her love for fashion with her other two passions – photography and travel – and focus her collections around the places she visits. “I also love to use pre-loved pieces of fabric,” she says. “People have donated scarves for up cycling and I’ve been given pieces of embroidery cut from pieces of Indian clothing no longer worn. I love the idea of something so loved it’s impossible to throw it away. These elements will be part of the next collection, so, if you have any you don’t want and are happy to raise some funds to keep the party going, let me know!”

Clean Up Bahrain is a new social initiative by Ahmed Khan, a Pakistani living in Bahrain. The 17-year old has a detailed 5-year plan for his non-governmental, not-for-profit initiative, which hopes to transform Bahrain’s environment through recycling, reducing pollution, erecting lawns and educating the masses. Frances Stafford, who lived in Bahrain for six years but now shuttles between Berlin and Bahrain, launched her new fashion label, Black Anaar, on the island. The symbol of Black Anaar’s eponym, created in Bahrain, comes from the myth surrounding the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden and the subsequent first dressing of Adam and Eve. The name was fostered by the contemporary myth that Sumerians described Bahrain (ancient Dilmun) as the Garden of Paradise. The ‘Anaar’ - meaning pomegranate in Farsi, Urdu, Hindi and other ancient languages, was later changed to an ‘Apple’ for Western indoctrination. Originating in the region between the Himalayas and Egypt, the pomegranate tree has been cultivated since ancient times in the Arabian Peninsula. The pomegranate shared symbolic commonalities between nations and religions through its connection to the divine, femininity, and cycles. The reference to Black alludes to mystery, the alternative and the subversive. It is this reference to sharing and appropriation between cultures, traditions, global patterns and modes of expression that is explored in the label.

Meet the face behind Bahrain Confidential’s stunning front covers! Yulia is a media sales manager during the day but spends most of her days off shooting (with her camera of course!). The social butterfly loves Bab Al Bahrain and Manama souq for their exotic, hidden locations and authenticity. She also loves photographing outside Bahrain National Theatre because of the natural lighting, contemporary set up, and amazing views beside turquoise waters. “One thing I find inspiring about Bahrain is the many different people living here, their personalities and styles,” she says, adding that Bahrain’s diversity and openness to creative expression makes it a fine destination for photographers to explore.

George enjoys snapping away at Al Areen Wild Life Centre especially the bird park in the middle of the centre.

George, after having worked for 10 years with top names in Middle East’s publication industry, decided to start his own photography business. Carrying a diverse, creative portfolio including artistic images and advertising to portraiture and fashion photography, he specialises in editorial and food photography. “My all time favourite location for shoots is La Fontaine,” he says, adding that the 150 years old restored Bahraini traditional house has the ability to turn into a magical world for any photographer with its perfect lighting, rustic walls and arty décor. George also enjoys snapping away at Al Areen Wild Life Centre especially the bird park in the middle of the centre. Culture, the Pearling Trail in Muharraq and A'ali Pottery are a few local elements that inspire the work of this shutterbug who believes friendly and honest Bahrainis make this small island a great destination.

A passionate documentary and travel photographer, Rasha loves capturing culture, architecture and traditional ways of living. “Moving objects and vibrant colours are what keep my photos alive,” says the avid traveller, who was born and raised in Muharraq. It’s no wonder that Muharraq is her favourite place to photograph, as she believes it has the essence of old Bahrain and brings back fond childhood memories. Rasha also produces multimedia stories, merging still photography with ambient sound and musical tracks. A successful finance professional, Rasha admits that every day is a battle between her left and right brain. In addition to participating in exhibitions and conducting workshops in Bahrain, Rasha has a few international accolades under her belt including being one of the eight Arab photographers to compete in the National Geographic Abu Dhabi reality TV show in 2014.

Mark picked up a camera for the first time purely by chance and the rest, as they say, is history. A lover of all things creative, the photographer and filmmaker got his first big break when he participated in VIVA Bahrain’s National Film Festival and won! His passion for the lens spurred him on to enroll in a local filmmaking competition that saw original submissions by the cream of Bahrain’s talented lot. The short film by Mark and his team was shortlisted and aired at Dana Cinemas. More recently, Mark was selected among other top photographers, to exhibit at Malja’s first photography open call. “The space beside the financial harbor is my favourite,” says Mark, adding that he shot two of his award winning photos there. Mark believes Bahrain is always changing and never fails to offer something new. The self-described street photographer loves to explore the by lanes in Manama souq thanks to the rich culture one can find there. “People are very friendly in Bahrain,” he says, “and when I ask them permission for my street portraits, they oblige with a smile”

Summer is a well known photographer in Bahrain and recently added yet another star to her creative portfolio by curating Bahrain’s popular artistic space, Malja’s, first exclusive photography exhibition. Specialising in newborn and child photography, she loves working in her studio that is built for this genre. But when she is not working in her studio, Summer loves working at the Bahrain fort. “I love its gorgeous architecture and historical elements,” she says, adding that there is a lot of natural light to work with. Summer also enjoys photographing families, outdoors – parks and gardens – as this gives children the freedom to run and play. Bahrain’s cosmopolitan nature inspires her work and the island’s geographical diversity – historic sites and dessert to beaches and greenery – is why she believes Bahrain is paradise for photographers.

Rami Al Ali

Rami Al Ali design house presents a dreamy collection this season, glancing through years of sartorial transformation on the aisle. Running the gamut of classical, streamlined silhouettes and ultra-romantic full skirts, the dresses are carefully constructed employing new techniques and redefining traditional aesthetics. Multi-layers of tulle and organza confer opulence and drama, while intricate beading and embroidery sculpt the female figure, for a modern touch. While crystals, lace, embroidery, and appliqued florals maintain the feminine code of the house, extending an exquisite display of elegance and finesse, the colour palette of off-white, beige and champagne, delivers a contemporary message overall.

Carolina Herrera

Oscar de la Renta FW’16

Carolina Herrera SS’17

The Carolina Herrera SS’17 collection is characterised by a sophisticated, fashion-forward touch. Distinguished by the floral signature, most of Herrera’s bridal gowns are meticulously worked with beautiful flower motif appliqués and reembroidered lace layered over nude tulle. Even if used so many times, it’s amazing how this particular touch of floral highlights the effortless elegance and femininity that the designer tries to focus on. Combining exquisite fabrics with unique details and an unrivalled craftsmanship, Carolina’s spring collection explores romance like never before.

Carolina Herrera

Marchesa SS’17

The Marchesa SS’17 collection is fully engaged with delicate bloom gently draped around the dresses. Starting their maneuver from lightweight tones and style, the designers manage, nonetheless, to come up with a delicate fullness dominating the gowns. With detachable skirts and peplums, Marchesa is definitely following the latest bridal trends. However, the line remains blessed with a unique style. Its inventiveness is all about 3D floral and was highly garnished by pastel color material such as rose tulle, ivory and silver threadwork or even silverthreaded lace.

Peter Copping infuse his gorgeous bridal collection with a ready-towear influence, reinterpreting styles from his spring 2016 runway with a bridal twist — and a particular focus on separates. Delicate embroidery — such as pearls, pale pink floral appliqués, sequins and bugle beads stitched together to create flower shapes — cover sheer bateau necklines and voluminous ballskirts, creating a soft, ethereal and distinctly feminine mood. A couple of sheer lace tops, done in short-sleeve and halter versions with ribbon ties, could be styled over column gowns or worn on their own with Copping’s frothy tulle skirts, one of them covered in hand-cut rosettes.

SEASON’S FRAGRANCES DALI HAUTE PARFUMERIE PARIS Uniting the art and fragrance worlds, and crafted in the purest fine perfumery tradition, the unique and exclusive collection of Dalí Haute Parfumerie fragrances was destined to exist. It is inspired by the jewellery creations of Salvador Dalí, which perfectly represent the genius of this extraordinary artist.

THE DALI FABULOUS COLLECTION Parfums Salvador Dali combines four of the most celebrated fragrance bottles – Dali Le Parfum, Dalissime, Eau de Rubylips (for women) and Salvador (for men) – in an exquisite, rare and precious collection ’The Dali Fabulous Collection’. ‘Dali le Parfum’ was the first artist’s fragrance, created in 1983 by Salvador Dali.

BAHRAIN WEDDINGS Interesting FACTS How to wish the bride & groom: Alf Mabrook OR Menna Almaal Wa Mennch Aleyal What to gift: Gold and Oud are usually gifted. In the past, people even gifted date palm trees! Few do even today. What to wear: Bahraini ladies traditionally wear the

Thawb Annashil and gents the Althawb, Algotra and Albisht. If you don’t have one, evening gowns and formal suits for gents also work. Where to sit: Typically, ladies and gents sit separately; ladies in the Alfarsha and gents in the Almajlis. Traditional Practices: When the bride walks in, ladies usually

ululate. It is believed this wards off evil. When the groom visits the Alfarsha, accompanied by his bride, to greet lady guests, the ladies usually wear their hijab. Other traditions include throwing sweets, coins and mashmoom (plant with medicinal and other good properties, native to Bahrain) on the groom and bride. Traditional wedding music is also played and songs are sung. Henna Party: A henna party, only for women, is hosted when women spend the night singing and dancing. In the olden days, the groom used to apply henna too, but today most grooms don’t. Typical perfumes used: Oud is primarily used and includes oud oil and oud bukhoor. Typical sweets served: Bahraini halwa, zalabia, khanfaroosh, nuts will always be served at every Bahraini wedding.

You can visit the Bahrain National Museum to further discover the beautiful traditions surrounding Bahraini weddings. www.suzhoudress.com

STARRY GULF Sometimes, it pays to be tiny, says Aiste A Daubaras.

W

hen I heard through the grapevine that Bolshoi Ballet would be touring Bahrain, I could scarcely believe my ears. That would be the equivalent of Madonna coming to perform in our tiny island, as indeed, Bolshoi is the Madonna, or should I say, “Prima-donna”, of the ballet world. However, after last seeing them perform in London, I was not that hugely impressed, and kept dampening everyone’s enthusiasm with my skeptical 'We shall see"... Also inevitably, one could not help but wonder how and what this most famous troupe would present us with, seeing that we do not have an orchestra pit, nor a resident orchestra, and it was quite unlikely to assume, that they would drag any stage decorations for two performances only. I needn’t have worried. The performance, which was righteously called 'Stars of Bolshoi Theatre', did not need either the orchestra or any cumbersome stage settings, as it had the most important ingredient - the truly exceptional and excellent dancers in vast abundance. How did they manage to lure such a starry cast to our tiny island, I do not know. One can only speculate, that the dancing wanders were enticed by a promise of an abundant sunshine (as it had been snowing for nearly a month in Moscow). But never mind the expected resident dancers, to everyone’s surprise and delight, as a guest star, along came the

famous, or rather infamous, Ivan Vasiliev (following his loud exit from Bolshoi, now a treasure of American Ballet Theatre); prancing onto the stage with a mighty force at the end of the first part (as a very convincing Acteon, opposite a lovely Diana in the extract from “ La Esmeralda’), and even before descending from his first leap, immediately winning the hearts of all the ladies in the audience with his charming smile. I, personally, spent an entire performance with my jaw gaping open in a very unladylike manner. But what a delightful spectacle, with an elegant backdrop befitting each number cleverly achieved by lighting, and comprising of such crown jewels, as poetical balcony scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, feisty pas de deux from “Le Corsaire”, the head spinning duet form “The Flames of Paris”, a gripping variation of “Don Quixote” and a dramatic final dance of “The Dying Swan”, just to mention a few. And somewhere in the midst of this breathtaking performance, I realised, that the reason why I was left with a rather lukewarm impression after having seen an entire production of ‘The Flames of Paris” in London, was the fact that there were simply too many distractions... the somewhat out-of-line backup dancers, the stage set, the props, the story line... Here

we had the very essence, the concentrated extract of the best of the best... presented to us by the best. Et voilà! Never in my life had I a privilege to witness such a pure, undiluted perfection. So you see, the moral of my story is, that sometimes it pays off to be tiny and obscure, and not having an orchestra pit.... just as long as you can offer some sunshine and warm hospitality...And I can only hope, that we shall keep turning on our modest charms as often as possible in the future.

AN EXCITING NEW JAG The Jaguar F-PACE S was built to be a performance car. Bahrain Confidential took it out for a test drive and it did not disappoint.

leek and sexy like Jaguar makes them, the F-PACE S also has a strong chassis built into a powerful, supercharged V-6 engine. What is special about this Jaguar is it’s a crossover, which means that it has the power of a sports car and the practicality and efficiency of an SUV. Since this is Jaguar’s first crossover release, it was also highly anticipated. The Glacial White F-PACE S looks very modern, with an all-white exterior and 20-inch Goodyear Fitted tires. The inside looks and feels classy. You get luxe leather seats and a roomy interior plus generous trunk space (a full 34 cubic feet of cargo space). Practical and powerful, this car would be perfect for people who need to transport two or more adults every day, but its crossover versatility can also make it workable for a variety of different situations. With its good looks, roomy interior, and dynamic driving character, the F-PACE S is a car that was worth the Jaguar crossover wait. What makes it more compelling is its competitive price.

To book your test drive, call Euro Motors Jaguar Land Rover at +973 1746 0460.

driver’s seat feels like a cockpit with its relatively high seating position, raised beltline, and long hood. The touchscreen infotainment system with driver assistance technology is easy to use and intuitive. It was fun driving this car. Jaguar put a lot of aluminum in the F-PACE S, which gives it its agility. The steering was sharp, and shifting was smooth even along curvy

roads. The body chassis and all-wheel drive system make for one powerful drive. I was driving on Sports mode most of the time, putting a heavy foot on the pedal. The satisfying thrum of the engines kept me revved all throughout. More than just aesthetics and flash, the F-PACE S is also a strong car able to tow 5,290 pounds. It can even venture off road.

interview

Bahrain in the Spotlight

Popular Bahraini musician, Ala Ghawas, and well-known Bahraini band, Likwid, collaborated, and represented the Kingdom at the Cairo Jazz Fest 2016. HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE AT THE CAIRO JAZZ FEST? Ala & Likwid: It was definitely a great feeling not just to participate, but to also open the three-day festival. It was also an honor to be the first group of musicians from Bahrain and from all GCC countries to ever perform at the festival, which has been running for eight years now. It was a great experience as a whole since we got to perform for a large crowd at the festival, and then later in a much smaller and cozier atmosphere at the Cairo Jazz Club. Both were certainly nights to remember.

HOW HAS BAHRAIN INFLUENCED YOUR LOVE FOR MUSIC? Ala & Likwid: We grew up in multicultural Bahrain in the eighties and nineties, there were a lot of local

80 Bahrain Confidential December 2016

musical acts then that were influenced by western music, like The Brothers, Osiris, Mirza Al Shareef, Ajras and many others. But we would all agree that The Brothers, especially, had the biggest influence on us individually and made us interested in rock, folk, jazz and pop music from Europe and the US at a relatively young age.

ANY CHALLENGES YOU'VE OVERCOME AND WANT TO SHARE WITH ASPIRANT MUSICIANS ON THE ISLAND? Ala & Likwid: Even with social media nowadays, getting recognition and exposure is quite tough. Still we were able to convince the festival organizers in Egypt by letting them hear our collection of original songs between both Ala Ghawas and Likwid, and by them viewing the videos of us performing

these songs live for the feature film "Ala Ghawas & Likwid: Live From Allston". So the point is, all musicians have to work hard and truly invest in themselves and their own original music, and good things will come in good time.

ANY SURPRISES FOR 2017? Ala: I'm currently very busy recording my 5th studio album. It's called "Tryst" and it's due for a release next summer. The album will be supported by a tour in the Middle East and the UK. Likwid: Since, some of our upcoming songs are already recorded and almost done; we will definitely release our second EP or most probably our first LP during 2017, which might feature collaborations with popular musicians and singers from Bahrain. We are also currently relocating Likwid Studios to a bigger location and we're very excited about that.

FESTIVE FLAVOURS:

SPICY BBQ CHICKEN

If this doesn’t make you a hit with your guests, we don’t know what else will!

G

o to all the fancy restaurants you want, but nothing beats a comforting, home-cooked meal. The festive season is busy and there’s no time to make elaborate dishes, but with TABASCO’s range of flavourful sauces, you can whip up a mouth-watering feast in half the time, using half the effort, while retaining the elements of a restaurant creation. TABASCO Sauce, named after the Tabasco River in Mexico, has tasted almost, if not exactly, the same for the past 140 years. A unique process involving the aging of the red peppers is what separates TABASCO from any other pepper sauce in the world. Red peppers are harvested, crushed, mixed with Avery Island salt, and aged in white oak barrels for up to 3 years before being drained and blended with strong, natural vinegar and stirred for several weeks. Once ready, it is strained again, bottled and shipped across the world.

Spicy BBQ Chicken

SPICY BBQ CHICKEN Makes 4 servings INGREDIENTS:

TABASCO ORIGINAL RED SAUCE Great With: It’s a classic ingredient in steak tartar and the iconic Bloody Mary. More recently it has received attention as a delicious addition to eggs, pasta sauces and pizza. TABASCO GREEN SAUCE Great With: It tastes good with anything from seafood to vegetables, dressings and fruit. A few dashes gives new zip to margaritas and piña coladas. TABASCO CHIPOTLE SAUCE Great With: It’s a natural fit for BBQ sauces and marinades, not to mention chili and soups. Adding a grilled flavour to the dish, it complements steak and meat dishes well. TABASCO HABANERO SAUCE Great With: It adds an adventurous zip to marinades and BBQ sauces, and brings out some big flavours in salsas and stews. TABASCO GARLIC SAUCE Great With: Whether it’s pizza and pasta or a dash on wings and in dips, this one appeals to those who like bold flavours with just a little heat.

Jawad Business Group is the sole distributor of TABASCO Sauce in Bahrain. For more recipes, visit www.tabasco.com 86 Bahrain Confidential December 2016

• 1/4 cup sesame seeds, toasted • 1/4 cup minced fresh ginger • 2 tablespoons sesame oil • 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar • 1 tablespoon TABASCO brand Original Red Sauce • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 (3 ½-pound) chicken, cut up

PREPARATION: • Combine sesame seeds, ginger, sesame oil, vinegar, TABASCO Sauce, soy sauce, garlic and salt in large bowl. Stir in chicken until well coated. Cover. Refrigerate at least 2 hours, turning occasionally. • Preheat grill to medium or oven to 450°F. Place chicken on grill rack or broiler pan. Cook chicken, basting frequently with TABASCO Sauce mixture, until the juices run clear when meat is pricked with a fork, 15 minutes on each side.

Winter Desserts Le Chocolat’s pastry chef, Ziad Durzi, a Jordanian living in Bahrain, unveils his range of artistic cakes.

W

inter calling! That’s the first thing on our minds when we see these 'sweet' works of art. The man behind the creations, Chef Ziad, has been fashioning cakes and pastries at Bahrain’s most popular French gourmet patisserie, Le Chocolat, for almost a decade. Though being a pastry chef involves long hours, standing, and the challenging task of consistently whipping up new ideas, Chef Ziad is passionate about baking. He looks to beautiful Bahrain for

inspiration. “Bahrain is quiet and peaceful, and I feel at home here,” he says, adding that he has been living on the island for the past 13 years. He goes on to tell us about one of his desserts, Rahash, which uses the Bahraini halwa. Loosely described, it is a ‘Halwa Crème Brûlée, unique to Le Chocolat’. Chef Ziad trained in Switzerland and France earlier this year. “It’s important to stay updated,” he says. “I am always looking up the latest baking and pastry making trends to be up to speed.” Chef Ziad believes that pastry

making, like fashion, has seasonal trends. For instance, he mentions that currently Nutella is quite the rage. That said, at Le Chocolat trends are followed keeping in mind local tastes and preferences. For instance, dark chocolate and Nutella are a hit with Bahrain. When Chef Ziad isn’t baking, he spends time with his family. “My wife is from Kenya,” he says. “I love the nature and safari experience there, and hope to make Kenya my next work destination.” Chef Ziad also walks every day to stay fit. Well, fitness must be a priority especially when one is surrounded by such amazing desserts all the time!

Visit Le Chocolat in Seef, Sa’ar Mall, Riffa, Enma Mall and Diplomatic area. For more info, visit www.lechocolatbh. com or call Tel. +973 1711 1144 or email info@jasmis.com @lecocolat_bh @thepastrychefziad
