THE CRAZY ART OF ANNA THACKRAY

The Best of Bahrain

BAHRAIN BD2 KSA SR20 KUWAIT KD2 OMAN RO2 QATAR QR20 UAE DHS20

Publisher & Editor-in-Chief: Nicholas C. Cooksey

First of all...

Acting Assistant Editor: Melissa Nazareth

It’s the time of the year when most of us start wondering if we were right making those new year resolutions. What seemed like a cakewalk just a month back looks like a tall order now. In fact, I was browsing through the internet the other day when I came across a factoid, 17th January is considered to be ‘Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day!’

Editorial & Contributors David Hollywood John Ridley Maria Sorger Angela McDonough Rita Moussallem Nadine Compton Craig Heslop Abdul Wahab

The problem here is not the resolutions themselves but the unrealistic expectations we have from ourselves, year after year after year. It’s about time we got real and treated ourselves with some respect. For starters, keep the commitments you make yourself. And the only way to do it is setting small goals. For instance, instead of saying, ‘I will read four books every month’, try ‘I will read 3 pages before I go to bed each night’; or instead of ‘I will become size 0 in a month’, try ‘I will jog for 15 minutes thrice a week’. That way our mind sticks to its decisions because it’s not under pressure and we also start enjoying the whole process.

So, let’s march ahead (pun intended) this (still very new) year, ditching those Facebook memes, which say ‘resolutions are made to be broken’ – because no, they are not!

The Secret of Language

– Stay Poet and Rhymester By David Hollywood

As we all know, poetry is far more powerful in its description than any other force of communication except music, which it sits alongside, and so verse requires far fewer words than prose to make a persuasive impact. Who would deny this? Consequently we all talk too much, when we shouldn’t!

The secret of language, Is never to say……..! If the hopes in your head, Feel like plans on display. And when the advantage, Of ‘minding’ the proof, Combines with affection, For freeing the truth.

The Dream is a charming interpretation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A comical tale of fairies, mismatched lovers, and a mischievous sprite, this is Frederick Ashton’s enduring one-act ballet. Tickets BD10, which can be used as credit at the restaurant.

Then meanings are heedless, Of your said hidden proof,

And quips are just grievous, When thoughts aren’t aloof. Stay poet and rhymester, Of words that convey, The meaning you write, That eludes us today. A miser of lyrics, Says more in a name, Than all the specifics Of reasoned acclaim.

MY BAHRAIN Ali Shams, a Bahraini novelist, tells us about his latest book release, and why people are the best libraries.

Is your new book, The Transcendent, inspired by your experiences? It would be difficult to say no. For sure, an author’s work is always influenced by his or her own experiences. A good writer, however, tries to see things from the characters’ perspectives as well; this backed by other people’s experiences, research and free imagination help to create richer, multidimensional art.

My Challenges…

Time is always a constraint especially with a full time job and family. Another challenge is transforming the scenes in my head into words, without suppressing myself but at the same time leaving room for my readers’ imagination to come into play.

I'm currently working on…

I’m working on the second edition print of my Arabic book. It’s about a Khaliji man,

12 Bahrain Confidential February 2016

Jameel, who visits an imaginary place, Zafara, where he socialises with people and discovers new characters that we don’t encounter in everyday life. The book aims to challenge social norms in a comical frame and I’m working on a few structural changes to make it more appealing to readers.

My favourite libraries in Bahrain…

My New Year resolutions…

My typical weekend…

I have a New Year project, which I hope to finish in 2 years time. I've also resolved to dedicate a certain time of the day for writing.

The best libraries are people because every individual has a story to tell and we can learn something from everyone. I share real life experiences, and latest research and readings with my close friends, such discussions spark imagination and creativity.

Books I like to read…

Family gatherings, a long walk with my lovely wife, chatting over a cup of latte, and having a juicy steak for dinner. I also love entertaining my charming daughter with new experiences, or even watching a movie at home with some nachos and a spicy tomato dip.

Now reading…

You can find Ali's books in Jashanmal Bookstores, Bahrain Duty Free and few others.

Mystery, science fiction, or any book that makes me wonder. Saud AlSanousi from Kuwait and Mohamed Sadiq from Egypt are two young Arab writers whose works I recently came across and admire.

THE CHRONICLES OF SHAMAL 14 Bahrain Confidential February 2016

art space Anna Thackray is a British artist living in Bahrain. One look at her work and you know she rides the dark side like a boss. Bahrain Confidential finds out the latest scoop on Shamal, her comic book trilogy, and what inspires her to use local themes in a time when most artists go with internationally popular ones.

Tell us a little about Shamal. I have created 3 books in the Shamal Trilogy and the latest book is the edited improved version of the story combined into one book • The Awakening of Shamal. No time to waste! Chapter 1 • The Feuding Shamal. War is Peace! Chapter 2 • The Conquering Shamal. The Endless beginning! Chapter 3 • The Chronicles of Shamal What inspires you to use local themes in your stories? I complete 8 years in Middle East and Bahrain, next month. I love stories and especially listening to Bahraini’s share their stories with me. It was impossible not to be inspired by the tales and hence the creation of my comicbook. What challenges did you face in the process of creating Shamal? I studied Fine Art, not Comic/Animation Art, so the toil that brought Shamal Comic

books reflects the frustration and happiness experienced when I paint or sculpt. I did this on my own, for 39 months sometimes working 12 hours a day. I did this because it is art! What more functional and perfect medium is there but the power of telling a story with pictures… isn’t that what a painting or sculpture sets out to achieve anyway? How is your comic book different from most others? This comic book is unconventional; I purposely tried not to follow the current trends in comic book design. I wanted it to be unique and created in isolation. Therefore most of the reference images are of my close family or me. For instance all the hands in the book are my own. Further, my husband’s mum inspires a major good character in the book.

Share a few interesting folklores you have learned from your interviews with locals. There are quite a few. An interesting one is "Um Humar, the mother of the donkey (read Mother Donkey) who is a half human and half donkey woman, and would get any child that stays out late. I was told by a great friend that the whole story is that this woman was once normal but then when her blaring donkey got killed by people of the village she got mad, so mad that she turned into a donkey and took revenge on the villagers. The stories I have been told also mention that the Tree of Life is not to be visited after dark. Then there is the story about the sweet water; the water, which sprung forth from the sea and is indeed a fact; a lot of stories are attached to these life-giving waters Any artists whose work you closely follow? Wow, there are so many... In Bahrain there are quite a few amazing street artists, Moe Alaabar, for instance. Moe created an owl, which is featured in my book (see newspaper image on bottom left). Huvil Art is another artist I follow and contemporary ones like Tamadher Ali. I even like the work of poets like Laala Kashef Alghata and others. My inspiration comes from Lichtenstein, Edward Hopper, Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith and many more. Any surprises for the New Year? In 2016, I take the Shamal comicbook to the rest of the world and so there are quite a few ambitious plans. Everyone needs to know this awesome country, Bahrain, with its unique culture and landmarks; therefore I could be considered Bahrain’s self-appointed ambassador. The story itself continues and Shamal is presently looking for the new villain in Dubai... however don’t worry, his base will always be here in Bahrain, and to where he will return following his travels.

Anna studied and completed her B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art and Painting in 2006 at Winchester School of Art, Southampton University in the UK. Visit desert-comic.com to check out more of her work. @althackray

(L-R) Ascia and Sofia share a candid moment

Bahraini handbag designer, Sofia Al Asfoor and renowned fashion blogger, Ascia hosted a styling session at Saks Fifth Avenue!

Bahrain Confidential sat down with Sofia Al Asfoor to talk about her latest Shield collection. What are the qualities of a woman who truly represents the Shield collection? “Shield" represents the powerful woman celebrating her beauty and sensuality, and having a strong heart, body and soul. A celebrity/public figure who best portrays your brand? Queen Rania of Jordan and Angelina Jolie. Why is leather your most favorite fabric to work with? My love affair with leather began around the same time I started designing handbags. I work with a

variety of leathers from calf to exotics; the natural characteristics of this fabric speak for itself. It love working closely with tanneries to achieve what, in my opinion, is the most luxurious product. Why did you launch this collection at Saks Fifth Avenue? I was searching for a retailer who understood the market and audience I was designing for. Saks Fifth Avenue understands my approach to luxury, perfectly.

soul talk

Rita Moussallem throws light on how to connect with the Supreme. God is pure spirit, and incorporeal, which means He does not have any human form. The Supreme is like a radiant, invisible star of blissful light. God is a separate, distinct being who remains above and beyond, and is eternally free from bondage to the material world. God remains ever pure, the ocean of love, peace, power, knowledge and bliss. God dwells in the incorporeal dimension of light, the soul world, the home of souls beyond this material universe, a place of total silence. This is a timeless location beyond the dimension of matter and thoughts. It is the purest, most supreme region. In meditation, you carry your thoughts into that world of peace to recharge your inner being. Meditation I allow the body to sit quietly and turn my attention away from the physical

energies, focusing my energy inwards and with one thought: I reach my home, the world of light, and here, in this vast, infinite expanse of light, I can feel the presence of the supreme, the source of light, the unlimited, I enjoy the magnificence of God, the being of light. His light, bright and yet gentle, one filled with love and power. As God’s light reaches me, I know that although I had forgotten Him and gone very far away, He did not forget me. God’s light makes me aware of His love, for I the soul. God’s light is the light of love and I absorb this within my own being. God’s light awakens the latent memories I had forgotten, and as I awaken, I realise the eternal connection that I have with the Supreme. God’s light extends into infinity, but yet with God’s grace, I am able to see the source of light and focus my attention totally on the infinitesimal point of light,

and I find myself being pulled deep into this infinitesimal source, and I am filled with God’s light and might.

My Dubai Escape S By Jelena Piergiovanni

o I got a call from my girlfriend of 18 years that she was coming to Dubai from London for a week and I decided that it was a perfect opportunity to take off for the weekend and to have a girly catch up. I got ok from my husband and booked Fly Dubai. The flight was delayed and we landed in Dubai an hour late, and were welcomed by pouring rain. My luggage was drenched and there were endless cues outside the airport to catch a taxi. I finally reached my friends, who greeted me with a delicious and healthy lunch of salmon steak and salad. We started catching up and making plans for our first night out. We decided to have dinner at Toko Toko, a fancy Japanese restaurant at the equally fancy Hotel Vida. After enjoying a couple of drinks at the hotel pool bar we got a call from our girly crew from Bahrain to join them for dinner at Roberto's, a posh Italian restaurant, so we changed our plans and joined them. Again, waiting for taxi and then arguing with the taxi driver where to take us was a bore, but we got there. Roberto's has a great lounge/bar area with beautiful views of the city, great food, and superb music. The prices are very high (certainly when compared to

Bahrain). Dress code: red carpet. I felt underdressed with a glittery top and jeans and high heels, as all the women there seemed to be in long or short designer gowns, killer heals, and had amazing hair extensions! After the dinner we wanted to dance and decided to check out Pacha Club. We had amazing night of dancing to all sorts of hits from current to 90's anthems remixed. The atmosphere was boiling, the club was packed, and there was an amazing aerial show! Every time someone ordered a bottle of Champagne there would be a fireworks and procession of dancers carrying it. It was a night to remember, but my feet were so sore at the end I barely got to the cab. Next day we were torn between going to the beach and joining our Bahrain girls, or having lunch with our girls from Dubai and checking out City Center. We decided the latter. I didn't feel like sitting in the sun and really wanted to check out the shops in Dubai, and discovered I was just in time for huge sales! Everything was discounted 50-75 %!

Latter we went to Cielo for tapas. The hostess turned out to be Serbian, like me, so we had special treatment, though to be honest we were not very happy with the food. Never mind, it was a beautiful breezy night with lovely chill/lounge music (kudos to the Dj) and we relaxed and chatted with friends. Latter we decided to go to a proper club and were torn between White Dubai, a big club in Meydan, or Mahiki Club Dubai at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Our friend told us that on Tuesday in Whites they play techno. I am not a big fan of techno, so we opted for Mahiki - it was perfect! A great crowd in their 30's plus, and an amazing mix of house, black music, and Latino hits. Dubai seems like the Hollywood of the Middle East. You just get blown away by the amount of beautiful people that live here. Anyway, another night till 3am and my feet were so bad I was leaning on the wall. And still trying to dance! Next day we were feeling pretty tired but still had Dubai mall to cross of our check list. We took a taxi to the Souq Al Bahar opposite the mall to admire some local crafts. My friend ended up buying a beautiful silver handmade ring. Then we had coffee outside the mall and admired an afternoon performance of the great fountain show. Eventually the time came to return to Bahrain. After a tearful goodbye with my girls I left sad but hopeful we will catch up again soon, and grateful for these opportunities to meet and reconnect.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

AMAL YOUSIF ALMOAYYED Amal Yousif Almoayyed has been the Executive Director of Ashrafs since 1996. Under her leadership, the company has seen incredible success, and become one of the oldest and prestigious retailers and wholesale distributors in the Kingdom.

The journey so far… I love fashion and have a Bachelors in fashion designing with financial and management accounting from the UK. I started my own business as a designer in 1978 and eventually opened my boutique. By 1996, I had 7 stores and my brother, Farouk Almoayyed, also entrusted me with Ashrafs, which at the time wasn’t doing too well. It’s been a challenging journey, juggling my boutiques and Ashrafs but also a great learning experience.

wholesale business – which is the core of the company – but I learned. If you know the trade, you can ensure the work is done perfectly. • A business doesn’t grow from the top but the bottom, from the people who work for you. If your employees are content and fairly treated they will bring results. When I tookover Ashrafs, I had to make tough decisions and let go of a few staff. We now have a high percentage of very productive, hardworking local and expatriate employees. We’ve increased our percentage of Bahrainisation from 20 to 46 per cent since 1996. • Change is the only constant, so, accept it. For instance, at Ashrafs, we’ve updated our marketing style – today it’s all about social media. • Never stop learning. I’ve been in the market for over 2 decades now but I’m still learning something new each day.

Important lessons I’ve learned… • If you want to start a business, educate yourself in the field. When I tookover Ashrafs, I knew nothing about electronics, photography, giftware and

Message to youngsters… The youth need to learn the importance of hard work and love what they do. It’s not just about earning money but also making something of yourself.

Bahrain Confidential profiles the creative

52 Bahrain Confidential February 2016

Proudest achievement this year… I’ve always dreamed of a state-of-theart shopping centre for Ashrafs where good quality products for all budgets are available. I’m proud of having accomplished this with my team. In fact, one of our suppliers, Joseph Joseph told me that our display of their products is the best in the world. On mentors & role models… I’ve learned a lot about business from my dad, and after he passed away, my brother, Farouk. When it comes to life, my mother is my mentor - she is a giver. I also want to mention that my husband has been my strongest pillar and supported me to follow my dreams. How I unwind… Gardening helps me unwind, and meditation has also helped me in a great way. Surprises for the New Year Right now, I want to focus on our existing businesses. With the drop in oil prices, it’s wiser to be conservative.

HAPPY GULF

Everything in our lives should come in moderation, vices as well as virtues, says Aiste A Daubaras.

S

o now when we are safely in the second month of a fresh and crispy New Year, I think it is the right time to ask how our new year's resolutions are going... Aha... thought so... Well, it is truth universally acknowledged that gym and health-club membership subscriptions soar into stratosphere in January, and then equally rapidly plop back onto the mother earth as they collide with the busy routines of our demanding lives. And who came up with this Get-HealthyIn-January-Or-Be-Doomed-For-The-RestOf-The-Year deadline, anyway? These first months of a year can get quite nippy here, so we need warmth and comfort most of all. Well, when you think about it, isn't this just another commercial invention, imposed upon us, mere mortals, by cleverly scheming marketing gurus in order to put us into post-holiday guilt induced frenzy and rush into spending more on health products, gym gear, detox and diet supplements and all sorts alluringly packaged pills and potions, that in my humble opinion, can very well be replaced with a few simple things in life that we

tend to overlook just because they seem to be too simple to help us achieve this New-Healthy-Indulgent-Free-Persona. How can a protein shake made from the powder replace a fresh and fragrant home made meal partaken with your entire family at a nicely laid table... And how a solitary pounding on a treadmill in a airconditioned rubber-stinking gym be better for you then a relaxed and brisk walk with your partner, child or dog. And would any of the health supplements do more good to you than good old laughter... I shall not dwell long on boring scientific facts that laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infectionfighting antibodies, that it triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals, thus promoting an overall sense of well being... See, it is that simple! Oh, but my dear reader, I am not saying that you should never set foot into the gym or that you should flush all the vitamins from your health-cabinet down the sink. I think the trick is to find a right balance, to find the time to detox and diet when it suits your body, to find what foods

and workouts are good for you, but most importantly to find that golden middle between discipline and enjoyment! Isn't it just that everything in our lives should come in moderation... Vices as well as virtues... So laugh, eat and be happy!

MY V-DAY STORY

We invited our readers to share their love stories and win a romantic dinner at Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa. Andrea Dias plucked up the courage to tell us how she got together with her husband, Movin Lewis, despite all the odds. Every day I’ve spent with Movin is a sweet memory; it’s very difficult to pick one. However there is one incident I’d like to share. This goes back to the time when I was dating my husband. At the same time, my parents and I were having talks about who I would marry. Like all parents they wanted the best for me. They were very concerned about him and I being the only children to our parents. Parents can get a little too possessive about their cubs sometimes! Movin tried to do everything to make them comfortable, in vain. They refused to give their consent

and after 2 years of trying to convince them, I’d lost all hope. But Movin calmed my nerves and assured me that he would never leave me. He was patient and understanding, and respected my parents, fully knowing that they didn’t approve of him. No points for guessing it was a happy ending after all! No, no, no we dint run away! We walked down the aisle with the consent of my parents who finally agreed. Two years after that beautiful wedding day, Movin continues to be my strength.

He gives me faith and confidence to overcome our challenges. And for this very reason and many more, I love and respect him! Just being honest – we were a tad disappointed to receive just one story before the magazine went to press! We really want to interact with our readers. Keep writing to us on info@ arabianmagazines.com or give us a shout on +973 1782 2350 and tell us what you’d like to read in YOUR magazine!

The Best & The Rest We ran a reader poll to recognise the best restaurants on the island. After going through all your emails, 1 reader was selected at random to enjoy a dinner for 2 at one of Bahrain’s popular restaurants. Unlike competitive sports, which have clear winners (and losers), restaurants cater to all sorts of niches and tastes. What appeals to some will not appeal to others. Bahrain Confidential believes it is misleading to proclaim any restaurant to be the ‘WINNER’. The reality is, there is THE BEST & THE REST. In this feature, we showcase a few of our readers’ picks of their favourite restaurants in Bahrain – everyone’s a ‘winner’!

THE SECRET TO WINNING AN ARGUMENT

IS RIDICULOUSLY SIMPLE

T

he insight comes from University of Colorado psychologist Philip M Fernbach in a paper with the telling title “Political Extremism Is Supported by an Illusion of Understanding.”

His theory: Political extremists might be a touch less extreme if they had to explain just how their favoured policy would create the changes they sought, as opposed to listing off the reasons that they’re right. For the experiment, Fernbach asked two groups of online participants to give their opinions on a variety of controversial and complex policy issues, such as healthcare and Iran.

Mind Hacks Detailed the Experiment:

One group was asked to give their opinion and then provide reasons for why

they held that view. This group got the opportunity to put their side of the issue, in the same way anyone in an argument or debate has a chance to argue their case. Those in the second group did something subtly different. Rather than provide reasons, they were asked to explain how the policy they were advocating would work. They were asked to trace, step by step, from start to finish, the causal path from the policy to the effects it was supposed to have. The results were striking. In line with Fernbach’s hypothesis, folks who gave their reasons for being right were just as convinced of their convictions after the experiment as they were beforehand. But the people who had to explain the mechanics of implementation had suddenly softer views. Not only that - they

also gave themselves a lower rating on their understanding of the subject.

The Two Takeaways:

 If you want to win an argument, ask your friend/colleague/partner/nemesis to explain how their perspective can be brought into reality.  If you want to remain convinced of your position, don’t just bring your reasons for why you’re right to the debate - make sure to bring along implementations too. But this kind of rhetorical humility is more rare than you think. “Freakonomics” coauthor and University of Chicago psychologist, Steven Levitt told us that in all of the consulting he’s done, one pattern is clear: “Businesspeople, especially in front of their bosses, have an almost unlimited ability to sit back and mint answers they don’t know.”
