HELLO AND GOODBYE… After four years as the Editor of Bahrain Confidential, this is my final Editor’s introduction. For someone who always wanted to be a columnist, I found journalism – or maybe it found me. Looking back, every day in past four years has been both challenging and beautiful. It is with a heavy heart that I write this note but I am also excited about what the new year brings for me. I am only leaving because I am starting a new chapter in my life – I am getting married and will be moving back to India with my future husband. I will be handing the editor’s duties over to my replacement, Jayne Green. I am sure that the magazine will do well under her leadership. So now, though I’m saying “goodbye”, I am also saying “hello”. I will be corresponding with BC and will continue to write for the magazine as an Op-ed Contributor. It has been an honor and a privilege to have been a part of your lives and I wish you the very best in everything!

Artists being filmed for Bahrain Sessions

Making a Scene Bahrain has a vibrant art and culture scene driven by the many talented people living here. In this feature, we bring you an inclusive list of local initiatives and venues that work toward putting artists, musicians, photographers, storytellers… in the spotlight. BAHRAIN SESSIONS Bahrain Sessions is an initiative inspired by the many hidden talents on the island, be it musicians, artists, poets, interior designers or others. Founders, Jody Peck, a photographer with great experience in travel photography and a talent in portraying Bahrain’s music scene in his own unique editing style, and Esam, a videographer with diverse experience in the field, are connected to a vast network of musicians and artists on the island and abroad. Together they conceptualised 20 Bahrain Confidential January 2017

this idea into a platform and community on Youtube for anyone in the country to show off their skills to a wider audience. “For instance,” Jody says, “there is an elderly Bahraini with a very distinct British accent who has been cleaning cars in the same car park for the past 30 years. He has funny, organic, heart warming stories, from his adventures, which are somewhat nostalgic to most people. As filmmakers, it is our duty to emphasise the relevance of this person’s experiences to a wider audience and it is these

connections that give Bahrain its unique vibe.” Bahrain Sessions culminated its first edition on Bahrain’s National Day with a small gathering of people – participants and contributors. The duo hopes to hold another event on the same day next year to celebrate yet another whole year's worth of filming, only bigger and more diverse. Bahrain Sessions

GCC FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS Nothing can escape the sharp eyes of a photographer with a mission to capture hidden treasures that the naked eye misses. The GCC Food Photography Awards provides young and aspiring photographers a platform to showcase their work and get noticed. Though the initiative was launched in 2013 as a nature and travel photography contest, the first food photography edition, in 2015, was a big hit leading to a second one, in 2016, themed ‘Celebrating Good Food’. Anita Das, an Indian motoring and photography enthusiast living in Bahrain, stood out, among other talented shutterbugs, as the winner. Anita shot all her images in Bahrain at the Central Market and Karannah Farms. “My inspiration for

these photos was not only nature but also the people who work behind the scenes to add to its beauty,” she says. Anita finds the workshops and photo walks conducted by Photoaward ME very helpful and tells us that photographers, Thanooj Thampy and George Mathew, who are also the Founders of this project, are

always ready to clear doubts and advise. “Even if we aren't in a workshop, I can drop them a message on social media and they respond immediately.”

POLO GASTRO PUB

Daniel Cochran of Belly of Paris during a live performance by the band at Polo Gastro Pub

While most venues host DJs and international acts, Polo Gastro Pub dares to be home to local grown bands. Stephano Fernando, the pub’s Outlet Manager tells us that it is his travels when he was younger and the memories of local bands on those trips that inspired this decision. “The island’s music scene is only building and we want to contribute,” he says. “You will be surprised to know that there is a great demand for live band shows in Bahrain especially, if they are local. We have many supporters to the idea and I’ve seen them grow steadily but rather slowly.” Polo Gastro Pub has the concept of no-cover charge on entrance to encourage attendance. “We do not charge our guests to watch the bands, rather we provide entertainment to thank them for their patronage.” Stephano admits that getting up to speed with the equipment and type of service needed to host a live event was a challenge. That said, he believes Polo Gastro Pub offers an experience different to most others in Bahrain. “I can confidently say we are the only venue hosting local musicians every weekend.” The pub has a range of exciting events lined up for January including its popular comedy nights, which it hopes to bring back. @Polo Gastropub

MALJA BAHRAIN Translating to ‘shelter’, Malja is aptly christened considering it offers artists a place to be and thrive. The synonymous to all-things-creative space, tucked away in Amwaj, celebrates its second anniversary this month. Established on 16th January 2015, Malja has been bringing local culture and art to the forefront, making it part of the everyday life of Bahrain. When international sensation and rock guitar icon, Bumblefoot, visited Bahrain, he was invited to host the Kingdom’s first major international ‘guitar clinic’ at Malja. Clockwork and Malja co-organised the session, Bumblefoot’s Living Room, where resident musicians were exposed to different styles and guitar techniques, and interacted with each other as well as Bumblefoot.

Street art at Block 338 & Inset: A live music performance at The Nest

THE NEST Al Riwaq art gallery, in Adilya, in addition to its lovely displays by resident artists, is well known for its popular project, The Nest. Inspired by the abundance of local talent, Al Riwaq launched the very successful Market 338 in 2010, Bahrain’s first ever design market. This showed the Kingdom’s potential for public art events, and in 2012, Al Riwaq launched Alwan 338, which focused on eliminating boundaries to art. In 2014, Al Riwaq merged the best of both these worlds and launched The Nest. The third edition of this much-loved annual event had Block 338 buzzing with the island’s artsy folk. In addition to creative workshops, live music performances, film shows and talks, the festival transformed the area into a live art hub with graffiti and installations.

BLUR! A Review

The original BLUR! piece was created before Aline came to Bahrain and what was created with our group was an "installation version", specific to this cultural context. The BLUR! adaptation, created specifically during The Nest, was a space wherein the performers and the audience were guided to a physical exploration. Imagine a space flooded with fog where you only see parts of people’s bodies, and your guides are silent. It creates a disambiguity in a way because this show does not explain anything to you, it allows you to see, hear, and think for yourself.

As part of The Nest hosted by Al Riwaq Art Space, French contemporary artist, Aline Landreau, flew down to Bahrain to conduct the BLUR! workshops. The Nest is a public art programme sponsored by Al Riwaq Art Space that turns Adliya’s streets into public art spaces and invites the community to gather and engage in various art programmes from November to December. As part of their drive for innovation, and excellence, they have invited several experts to give workshops to the community. One of these was Aline Landreau, joined by her collaborator Bruno Pocheron who took care of the lights and technical set-up for the event. The workshops and subsequent

performance of BLUR! were sponsored by the French Embassy. The Getty Institute refers to contemporary art as art that is made and produced by artists living today, who “work and respond to a global environment that is culturally diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted”. In this landscape, Aline has created BLUR! which is symptomatic of the need for human interaction and appreciation of simple tactile sensations: sound, sight, and smell.

She has participated in exhibitions at the Bahrain Exhibition Center, La Fontaine Art Center, Durrat Marina, Dana Mall, The Diplomat Hotel, and Mashq Art Gallery. As one of the performers, I felt intrigued and I find myself with a heightened sense of experience after the programme. The people who watched the show either loved it or were confused. I guess this speaks of how art allows us to question things, and it creates a conversation from artist to community, from spaces to movement. I am looking forward to the next big thing that Al Riwaq has in store.

This allowed her the freedom to use bolder accents in her work without looking ostentatious. Her art works range from two dimensional to three dimensional fine arts, décor and jewelry. She says that her work is influenced by the process of the material she uses: every one of it goes through a metamorphosis by fire. Karli has started working on several large pieces with new techniques and we are all excited about what the new year brings.

Fashion SMART TIPS TO DRESS THINNER: • Thick in the middle? Add a fell-fitted jacket to give your body shape and hide your tummy. Biker jacket are the rage this season. • Wrap a long stole around your neck in a way that it covers your middle, distracting from the paunch. • If you’re pear shaped, define your waist with a skinny belt. • Thunder thighs can be cleverly hidden under a chic dress made from structured fabric that clinches about your waist, coming in close to your body and then gently draping out. • A deep V-neck hides a heavy bust. Throw in a long chain with a heavy pendant reaching your belly and ‘lift the weight off your chest’!

For Autumn/Winter ‘16 PAUL SMITH embraces his past, exploring some of his design signatures including stripe, print and tailoring. Stripes are recurring, woven into cashmere knitwear and running the length of tailored coats. Tailoring cloths are engineered to incorporate Lurex pinstripes and micro hounds tooth. Dinosaur prints and knitted jacquards peep from beneath the layers, while digitally printed peaches on technical bomber jackets reference Paul’s pioneering use of photo printing techniques. Embracing the free spirit of the late-60s and early-70s, lip-shaped fastenings on leather belts and tasseled loafers are finished with toadstool and peace sign charms. Outerwear is a focus. The Epsom coat is the centerpiece of the collection and is presented in a multitude of ways: sheepskin and cashmere, peaked lapels and notched lapels, single and double-breasted. Coats are styled on top of layers of classic tailoring and colorful knitwear, trousers are often flared and heeled leather boots extend above the ankle. Paul’s longstanding passion for cycling informs the color palette where contrasting shades of peach and bright green often form stripes that are reminiscent of the vividly colored knitted jerseys worn by the heroes of the sport.

Available from Paul Smith shops, paulsmith. co.uk and selected accessories retailers.

Great Health

Health Updates

IS RUNNING GOOD FOR YOUR KNEES? Whether you’re a sports aficionado or a regular runner, you might be wondering if the longstanding pounding from running is actually good for your knees. A new study suggests that running lowers knee inflammation and may even protect against arthritis. Contrary to popular belief, running appears to reduce knee joint inflammation, not increase it according to a study from Brigham Young University. Co-author Matt Seeley, PhD, said in a press release that the idea that long-distance running is bad for your knees might be a myth.

PROCESSED MEAT MAY WORSEN ASTHMA Researchers say that eating processed meat might make asthma symptoms worse. A recent study published in the Thorax Journal found out that consuming high portions of processed and cured meats (four times a week) could worsen asthma. The study was conducted to nearly 1,000 French adults and among the people with asthma, higher meat consumption was connected to worsening their symptoms. Processed meats have already been linked to cancer and it wouldn’t hurt not to indulge in sausages and ham regularly.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR LOWERS BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS Apple cider vinegar is known to have a wide range of benefits over the decades. Research found out that consuming apple cider vinegar seems to help regulate blood sugar. A study published in the Diabetes Care looked at men and women with type 2 diabetes and found out that those of them who took two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before bed with a snack had lower blood sugar levels the next morning. This was in comparison to when the participants ate the same bedtime snack paired with two tablespoons of water.

FLOATATION THERAPY Float tanks, isolation tanks or sensory deprivation tanks are getting much popularity recently. Floatation therapy is inducing deep relaxation and positive health effects in soundproof tanks with salt and warm water. Some of the claimed benefits range from recovering from stress to relieving pain.

Great Health CUTTING CALORIES THROUGH SWITCHING TO DIET SODA Switching to diet soda seems to be the perfect solution to balance out a meal. Most people try to lessen their calorie intake by choosing a nonsweetened drink. Although this might look effective, an article published in the International Journal of Obesity found out that consumption of calorie-free beverages has minimal influences on total daily energy intake. Researchers found out that the people who had zero-calorie drinks tried to compensate the sugar they never had by eating slightly more on their following

meals, while the ones who had the sugary drink didn’t keep overeating for the rest of the day.

The study concluded that higher levels of optimism during hospitalization were associated with reduced mortality over a two-decade follow-up period.

OPTIMISTS MAY LIVE LONGER AFTER HEART ATTACK A study in Israel suggests that optimistic people are more likely to survive decades following a first heart attack than those who are less optimistic. The study team writes in Mayo Clinic Proceedings that the results don’t prove that optimism extends life, but doctors should nevertheless consider including optimism training in patients’ rehabilitation after heart attacks.

EBOLA VACCINE Merck Sharp & Dohme developed a vaccine which is highly effective in preventing humans to be infected by Ebola. In 2015, the experimental vaccine was given to people in Guinea who were in contact with people who were infected with Ebola. The vaccine was developed in Canada and is now being fast-tracked by both US and European regulatory agencies. The recent study published in The Lancet is a historical success in the field of health.

SUPERFOODS 2017 Cauliflower Locally produced varieties of this humble yet nutritious veg are available at supermarkets and open farm markets. Pulse the florets to eat as cauliflower ‘rice’ or bake it whole for a low- carb and calories meal rich in fiber, Vitamin C, folate, potassium and anti-cancer compounds called glucosinolates. Omega 3 Foods No Bahraini meal is complete without seafood. Literally meaning ‘Two Seas’, Bahrain is surrounded by waters abounding in fish packed with Omega 3. Further, several roasteries and organised retail stores sell nuts rich in these essential acids. Watermelon Water Watermelon water, like coconut water, contains natural

electrolyte minerals. It’s especially high in potassium, which has the benefit of keeping blood pressure in a healthy range. It also contains lycopene - one of the most powerful and protective antioxidants found in plants. Turmeric is an exotic spice heavily used in Bahraini cuisine alongside saffron, cardamom, cloves, sumac and others. The local souqs or even supermarkets sell this condiment containing curcumin, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin has also been shown to help relive the pain of arthritis, injuries and even dental procedures.

Goat Meat A staple in Middle Eastern cuisine, it is low in fat and higher in protein than some meats. It’s also higher in iron than beef or lamb. Sunflower Protein Bahrainis snacking on sunflower seeds is so common, it borders on social stereotype. Available at any supermarket, these are rich in proteins essential for building, healing and repairing body tissue. A source of vital antibodies and hormones, they are a great mid- meal treat too.

Doors of

Bahrain

Bahrain- based South African artist, Leanne Marshall, captures these beautiful ‘witnesses of the past’ and strongholds of the times gone by, which are slowly disappearing from the architectural scene.

L

eanne got her first camera while still at school and that’s when photography became a passion – wildlife photography under high African skies, travel photography at iconic destinations across five continents and, since moving to Bahrain, street photography. “For a photographer, Bahrain has much to offer: narrow streets and colorful souqs, dhows and fishing boats, skyscrapers and archeological digs, sunrises and sunsets, forts and castles, and especially, beautiful camels.” says Leanne. The artist believes that pictures are to be composed in the camera. Relying on capturing the essence of the subject with very little, or no, manipulation of the photograph, Leanne captures everyday views in a way that is both natural and striking.

Bahrain Through Postcards titles ublished viously p re p ' is n k at You kes a loo Melissa ta

Younger generations may never experience the thrill of writing letters and sending out postcards. Younis Hashim Al Kooheji’s new book enkindles fond memories of these yesteryear traditions. Melissa Nazareth talks to the former Chairman of the Bahrain Philatelic Society over cups of flavourful Arabic qahwa.

the Kingdom’s political, cultural and social history as well as its human and urban development over the years. “I was inspired by my friend, Ali Raees, who published a similar edition for Kuwait,” says Younis, adding that the book features his own collectables as well as a few from

friends and fellow members of the Bahrain Philatelic Society, especially his friend Saleh Al Hassan.

Today, we are constantly busy with life and forget to spend time with our loved ones.” Younis’ family makes it point to get together every weekend and he hopes for everyone in Bahrain to do the same.

PRIZED POSSESSION We further discuss Younis’ hobby and he tells me that when he started, he used to collect stamps from all over the world but eventually shifted focus to Bahrain and other Arabian countries. I am happy to discover he has few from India (my motherland), which are about 50 years

old. “The oldest stamps from my collection are the ones closer to my heart,” he says, adding that the first Egyptian and Arabian stamp issued in 1866 is one of his prized possessions. ‘Bahrain Through Post Cards’ features collectables from 1936 to 1986 (50 years). Younis also has some from after the period but decided not to publish them in this book.

As we come to the end of our conversation, Younis asks me if I’d like to have another cup of qahwa and I politely decline. “Shake the cup like this,” he says, tipping the cup on to one side and then the other, really fast. “It’s the custom to say you’ve had your fill.”

ACCOLADES Speaking of future plans, Younis hopes to get another book, with pictures of old Bahrain, published sometime in 2017. “I have over a thousand photos,” he says. Younis also intends to participate in more exhibitions and asks you, my lovely readers, and me to watch out for the one by the Bahrain Phliatelic Society, this year. People & Life

Into the

Wildfire

Do you have a life situation that’s grieving you? Noor Shirazie’s creative way with words can turn your pain into poetry. That’s exactly how the first book in her debut series, Into the Wildfire, came about. The Australian-Pakistani-Iranian author studied at Bahrain School and calls the island her second home. We caught up with this blogger turned author during her recent trip to Bahrain.

Noor sketched this front cover where one hand is holding on tightly, while the other has already let go. It symbolises how we try to clutch onto those who have either chosen to move forward or had no choice but to leave. To create this, Noor took a photo of her hands and used that as a reference point.

TELL US MORE ABOUT MOURNING DEPARTURES. Mourning Departures is the first of four titles in the Into the Wildfire series. I began writing in 2012 and posted my work online through social media sites, Tumblr being the most prominent. After gaining a viewership of 19,900 people, I decided to publish my work into a collection. It features poems based on my own personal experiences, as well as those that reflect the stories of others. People would write to me on Tumblr with issues they were going through, and they would ask me to turn their situation into a poem. This was part of the reason I decided to publish this series to speak on behalf of those that may not be able to articulate their hardship.

WHAT GOT YOU TO WRITE THE BOOK? This book came about after writing thousands - literally, thousands - of short poems on Tumblr. I began writing after a particular friendship ended and realised how natural it felt to turn to that creative outlet. I also had feedback that my poems had helped readers of my blog.

YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE? The knowledge that every piece is written because of a lesson. Whether that lesson was based on a positive or negative experience, it is out there to help whoever reads it. Poetry 68 Bahrain Confidential January 2017

allows you to read a piece that may mean one thing to you and something completely different to someone else. Half the magic of writing lies within the reader.

MOURNING DEPARTURES P.43

HOW HAS BAHRAIN INFLUENCED YOU?

I am falling into despair, unable to determine whether to hold on or let your phantom slip further away.

Bahrain, to this day, feels like a second home. The culture feels familiar, as does the city and the heartwarming people within it. In some of my writing, I touch on the importance of a sense of belonging, of community, of the physical definition of home. It wasn't until I found myself in a brand new city - Boston - for college that I understood what I took for granted in Bahrain.

WHAT ARE THE 2ND, 3RD, AND 4TH TITLES IN THE SERIES ABOUT? The second title will be about topics that people suffer internally, for the most part. These include topics like anxiety, depression, insecurity, and loneliness. The third is about your turning point, finding a way back to sanity, and healing. Lastly, the final book will be about your personal revolution, recognising that you are good enough, channeling self-love back into yourself, and taking charge of your identity. The manuscripts for these are ready and I hope to publish them soon.

It taints everyone I know. Everyone begins to resemble you, and yet, they will only plant weeds where you once grew a bed of roses. Who knew you and I were so horribly brittle? I am broken glass. I am the questions you leave unanswered in the corner of the room. I am a fragment of what I worked so hard for. Damn you for stealing away so much of who I once was.

Mourning Departures encompasses topics like abandonment, insecurity, abuse, selflove, reinvention, companionship, and independence. It is available on Amazon, Createspace, Magrudy, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and Alibris. eBook prices may vary. Her second book, Into the Wildfire: Battle Scars is now available for purchase on Amazon.

B

ahrain Development Bank celebrates the success of Bahraini entrepreneurs who, with belief and confidence, brought their ideas to life and strived to better their success. Their stories serve as a motivation to institutions like ours that serve to broaden the entrepreneurial base, expand the national human resources and provide further employment opportunities with a view to diversifying the economic base of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

JAMIL SALMAN - SAFA POULTRY FARM From being a conventional poultry to the largest poultry farm in Bahrain, Safa Poultry Farm has won many awards, including Frankfurt City Award for using the latest technology in the Middle East. It is a story of ambition and dedication,

which started out with Jamil Salman’s dream to create a legacy in the world of entrepreneurship. Since childhood, he was determined to be self-employed and work tirelessly to carve a name by developing a project that would create value for himself and his country. The business enabled him to teach his kids the value of independence and selfsufficiency. Jamil Salman notes that his strong relationship with Bahrain Development Bank contributed to the success of his business; it was with their full support and financing, that he was able to achieve valuable milestones in managing a variety of projects, creating job opportunities for Bahrainis, and providing a healthy and modern environment for poultry farming. “We are lucky in Bahrain as everyone has access to opportunities, and support

in every aspect of doing business,” says Jamil Salman. “I would advice every entrepreneur that they should be willing to face the inevitable challenges with passion, determination, integrity, and relentless work to achieve their goals.”

Beauty in the Gulf Aiste A Daubaras reveals her personal all time favourite in Bahrain. leaf and start afresh, as in “I shall definitely go on diet from next Monday’, “I’ve enrolled into a yoga class starting in April”, “We will cut chocolate and carbs in the New Year”… Eh, the magic clean slate and endless opportunities that await us in the promised land of “New Year”. And why not! Imagine if we had to drag around the gruelling weight of all our mistakes and transgressions, our progress and ability to move forward would be severely haltered. Therefore, I am a firm believer in “Manjana”, as anything is possible there…in theory, at least.

L

ong before Romans invented the calendar, that most of the world is using now, humans were trying to create a method for keeping track of days and larger divisions of time. And those schemes of timekeeping were and are not merely useful for counting days or months, they allow our weak human nature, again and again, to turn over a new

And thus, on the last strike of midnight, I too vowed to get into a rigorous new beauty regime and emerge at the end of this year looking all healthy and glowing and at least ten (ok, some) years younger. Clearly as important as eating reasonably healthy or exercising fairly often, I’ve discovered that, for a lady of a certain age, it is equally important to get regular facials (that’s apparently what French women do, according to the book “French Women Don’t Get Facelifts”). And coincidently, in my well-travelled opinion, one of the best places to get a good quality, attentive and customised treatment, is here, in our sunny little island. Big city beauticians seem to be too indifferent, overworked, underpaid,

or simply bored and demonstrably lacking any interest in their chosen profession. I am not saying that it is a rule without exception, rather more of an emerging current trend, but I did struggle to get a good facial last time visiting London. And although we, expats, more often than not, tend to compare things in favour of our home countries, let’s give praise where praise is due. Even without any official survey, just by a glimpse of a naked eye, one could say, we have perhaps the highest ratio of the hardworking, diligent and knowledgeable beauticians per capita. Wherever I went, whatever treatment I tried, never did I leave unsatisfied. My personal all time favourite, is unquestionably “Sparadise” at Elite Resort and Spa. But overall competition is tough, because there is so much to choose from, as the striving to please a customer is very genuine in this service orientated culture. What a difference does it make when a person takes pride in his trade and genuinely loves what he does. So let’s invent no excuses to delay our re-invention and rejuvenation; do let’s embrace The New Year with a spring in our step. And even if our energetic intentions will get a bit jumbled along the way, a good start is half of the work, isn’t it? Happy New Year, Happy New You!

People & Life

My son, almost 3 years old, loves broccoli! No, that’s not a joke, he really does... he also snacks on raw garlic and onions (great natural antibiotics), drinks fenugreek tea and loves spinach smoothies! This is not an accident or pure luck, I’ve worked hard for it. You see, clean eating is important in our household. However, living in Bahrain makes the matter 10 times more difficult; where do you get fresh, organic, GMO- free, glutenfree, wheat- free products on the island, without having to wander around hoping for a miracle?

All in all, it was also a great learning experience for the kids, as they explored and learned how fruits and vegetables make their way to our homes.

Defeat is not my thing and I never take NO for an answer; so, after months of trial and error, I finally came across the Peninsula Farm; a farm in the middle of nowhere that promises the best. A bunch of like-minded mums and I, along with our kids, decided to check it out. We were surprised by what we saw! The farm does not use pesticides (except for the rare occasions when it needs to use contact pesticide spray, which can be washed off) and it tests its products in independent labs to assure that the harvested plants have ZERO pesticide residue. Further, all seeds used are GMO free. The farm also has variety of lettuce, cherry tomatoes, capsicum, chilies, kale and micro-greens in addition to organic diary products.

From the many details, what caught our attention the most was the goat milk soap made from 3 ingredients only!

The water gushed through the two fissures in the ground... exactly as Abdul Nabi had described. From the rockprotected shore, some twenty meters away, I could hear its gurgle as it poured forth from the seabed. Just like Gilgamesh- the king of Uruk- must have heard, I thought, when he arrived in Dilmun in search of the fruit of immortality, more than four thousand years ago. I turned toward my left and saw the walls of Bahrain Fort glisten in the sunshine. To my right, Bahrain Fort Museum looked quiet and desolate that Friday morning. In the silence, the sound of water surging incessantly from the depths of the earth felt like music to my ears. Its sight was like a dream come true. Mesopotamians believed that there was an ocean of fresh water below the salty seas and the inhabited world where Enki, the God of wisdom, resided. The springs that formed below the sea gave Bahrain its name – the land where two seas meet. Even before Bahrain became renowned for its pearls, its sweet water springs drew trading ships that plied the Arabian Gulf to it. The first settlements on this island arose as watering ports for passing vessels more than four millennia ago. What ancient Dilmun envisaged as an ocean of fresh water, modern geological science classifies as aquifers, or porous water- bearing rocks below the earth’s surface. Several thousands of years ago, when Arabia was far wetter than it is today, the rainfall in the central part of the peninsula

found its way into an aquifer that sloped toward Bahrain. This continuous sub-terrain channel fed the fresh water springs of this island. The sea had receded a hundred meters from the rock-lined shore and it would be a good six hours before it returned again to cover

Though the tide was some distance away, I realized that time was ticking by.

the springs.

With an empty bottle in my hand, I stepped gingerly over the rocks that lined the edge of the sea. God only knew how many millions had done so before me, to collect the precious water that nature had gifted Bahrain.

People & Life

How was 2016 for you? You wouldn't believe the amount of people who've told me it was a bad year for them... and all for completely different reasons. My 2016 was actually pretty good, not too different from 2015, or 2014 for that matter. Pretty good, not brilliant, but certainly not the roughest year I've lived through. And yes, just like at the beginning of every other year, I'll be making a couple of New Year’s resolutions. But this time I’m confident that they’ll stick, because instead of making them when tired and emotional i.e. in the wee small hours of January 1st, I've already implemented them into my daily life. The first is all about discipline and strength, and pushing my body to its limits. Working out with a personal trainer for a few weeks was all I needed to be inspired to do this. It's increased my fitness and confidence, and left me feeling stronger and sexier than ever. Trust me - if you're stuck in a fitness rut, or have physical goals you'd like to reach, a personal trainer really is the way to go. The second is about not sweating the small stuff. This is easier said than done when stuck in school traffic but is definitely worth a whirl anyway. Surround yourself with good people, breathe fully and deeply,

do things that make you happy, and pick your battles. I’m 78 Bahrain Confidential January 2017

trying to keep mine firmly within the confines of my car. And the third is about springcleaning my closet, and not just in the spring. It's simple - whenever I buy a new piece of clothing, shoes or bag, I take any two of the above from my wardrobe and give them to charity. The benefits are threefold - the act of giving always gives me the feels, my closet is more streamlined, and shopping at the fabulous sales we enjoy on the island evokes less guilt than ever before. It's truly a win-win all round! Happy 2017, beautiful people!

Art as we know of it is something that we don’t acquire or learn, children know exactly how… to utilize a pencil or crayon before they actually know how to physically hold or handle the medium. Art therapy allows us to spontaneously create and express ourselves using different mediums with NO JUDGEMENT of how good/bad the picture looks. Nothing really matters but your actual existential creation. When you create something visually it’s when you actually reflect factors that are important in your life at that instant. That ‘way of seeing’ is translated through art expression and analysis in therapy through symbolism and interpretation. The work of art will depend on your perception and will act as a mirror reflecting how you see yourself and how you ignore other parts of yourself. People perceive pictures in different ways, but there are always symbolisms and explanation that only the creator can affirm. An art therapist is there to provide a safe environment for an individual to create and say visually which you will not normally express verbally. The visual part of your mind is active when you draw, and that also depends on the trust and safety of the setting you are physically in.

Art is like a mirror of your soul, your

personality your traits, it is just you. When issues are repressed they are blocked from your consciousness, which causes fear and anxiety because of the unknown and the unexplained. When you are aware of your perception, thoughts and feelings, you will be enlightened to your importance and meaning of your life. Your goodness, your development and your motivation reply only on your efforts and awareness to your current state of mind and the huge space you have to allow yourself inner freedom and acceptance.

People & Life

I was born and brought up in the Pennine Hills of Lancashire... in the North of England. At 300-400 metres above sea level, it is a place of bleak moors and rain. Winters, in the nineteen-sixties, I remember were harsh; 30cm of snow with 2m drifts were not uncommon; temperatures often failed to rise above 0°C during the day.

One time, I rode home from work in freezing fog, my eyelashes frozen and a sheet of ice falling from my chest as I dismounted my motorcycle. On other occasions, I would crack the ice from the seat of my bike before making my daily commute.

it is a heatwave, above 30°C, the roads will melt and the railways buckle. I lived in a land of cold and wet: I was a product of that land, able to endure those conditions.

to talk. I stopped walking and found myself at the bus stop. I’m not sure how I mustered all my courage but I did one thing that I didn’t think I would, got on to the big red bus, alone.

Last weekend, I was with my good friend and fellow author, Seumas Gallacher, selling our novels at the Bahrain Rugby Club Christmas Fair. The temperature was 18°C. After half an hour, I went to my car to get a fleece. Yes, a fleece, something that in the UK I would never dream of wearing until the polar bears shivered, and here I needed a fleece in temperatures that would be considered a fine summer’s day at home.

It all happened fast and the next thing I knew, the bus was already moving. I had no destination; I just had to follow my guts. I looked out of the window and wondered how I could have missed noticing the serenity of this country before. Suddenly, a stranger approached me. Maybe she noticed how sullen I was looking. She tried to start a conversation. I hesitated at first, but surprisingly, it was one of the best conversations I

Bahrain, what have you done to me?

I would ride my motorcycle whatever the weather, all year-round, unlike many who at the first sign of adverse conditions would put their bike away for the winter. My work took me to the North-East of Scotland where, one winter, the temperature fell to -22°C overnight, shattering the windscreen of my car. Most of my life I have lived in a world where if the temperature rises above 20°C,

People & Life

My heart is full of stories about a plethora of local people who have glided into my psyche... as the inseparable part of my life’s experiences. As years pass by, my treasure of episodes of various tones and textures keeps getting voluminous. The launch of this series was on a burning- coal- hot road on a belching- fire- hot day about two decades ago. Our car sulked and stopped

Even as we were sitting clueless inside the car, there appeared a young Bahraini boy from nowhere.

without warning.

He smiled with the kind of joy you feel when you are taking a stroll in the most beautiful garden of the world and suddenly you chance upon your long lost best friend! His face was slightly familiar but the heat and the frustration blurred my sight enough not to recognise him. His “Salamaleku’m teechaar, how are you, fine? Any broblem?” in one breath - jerked me back into a conscious human being. The next thing I remember is that the car bonnet was open, some hot steam almost attacked his face and that he asked us to wait for a couple of minutes and disappeared. Before we could even connect the small dots of this sudden episode, he appeared again. This time he was not alone. Two rather heavy cans of

88 Bahrain Confidential January 2017

water were giving him bothersome company. He poured the water into the water tank without batting an eyelid over tons of sweat that drenched him. The bonnet of the car was suitably closed with another joyous smile. “You will be fine now teechaar” and he disappeared as inconspicuously as he had first appeared. His effortless help did surprise me at that point of time. But experience has proved that such acts come as naturally to Bahrainis as the sand on their land or the water in their sea. Long live this fountain of fizz called Bahrain!

A bayas are seen all around Bahrain, and throughout the rest of the Gulf... countries. The underlying paradigm of this Islamic dress is that women be dressed modestly and not make a public display of their body shapes. This concept – of a formal outer garment for the public domain – is quite similar and comparable to the full-length cloaks worn in Victorian England. Contrary to popular belief in the West, that such a garment is oppressive and represents female subordination; it is pleasantly astounding to discover (from discussions with Bahraini ladies) that they find donning an Abaya rather convenient and liberating. After all, it allows you an instant transformation, straight from your gym (in a track suit) to hitting Moda Mall! Dropping the kids off to school does not mean mum also has to get herself all dressed up before darting out in time; throw on an Abaya and she looks quite presentable, whilst still in her PJs. Beat that! Long, loose

Abayas are also – probably for practicality’s sake – traditionally, black; but the good news is that things are changing. The

designers’ refreshing take on the modest Abaya will have you grinning from ear to ear. Contemporary cuts and patterns, soft flowing fabrics like chiffons and georgettes, diverse styles and vivid colour combinations are not only aesthetically pleasing but are great on comfort. They offer a variety of styles befitting different occasions and incorporate multiple cultural references, from the humble Jilbabs to opulent Kimono cuts. From completely plain, basic machine-embroidered, embellished with hand-work, to fur-trimmed and Swarovski encrusted works of art, the modern twist on the modest Abaya has got the ladies spinning in delight and spoilt for choice.

and full-length,

Abaya is evolving into a chic fashion statement, influenced by international trends in haute couture. Upcoming

Car Review

IN THE MIDDLE EAST HUGH HASKELL-THOMAS TESTS RENAULT'S NEW FLAGSHIP SUV

A

t a sparkling ceremony in Dubai, on the 19th October, the new Renault Koleos made its Middle East debut, where it will launch before any other markets. This brand new 5 Seat SUV, the flagship of the range, is designed to rival the likes of the Kia Sorrento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander and others, is clearly focused on family buyers with its increased rear seat and load carrying spaces. At launch it will only have 5 seats, though there is a potential for a seven seat variant at a later date.

92 Bahrain Confidential January 2017

The new design, sitting on the same platform as the Nissan X-Trail, offers a modern, stylish profile that is much sleeker than most of its competitors. Newly designed LED driving and running lights complement the car and branding it as a member of Renault’s new fleet. Equally, the interior trim level reveal a complete makeover, with the 10 touchscreen in the centre of the dash together with heated/ ventilated seats (in some variants) being key differentiators in this highly competitive segment of the market.

On the technology front, the Renault designers did not stop there, providing complete control of the interior lighting, which can be altered to a myriad of colours. The Koleos also features the R-Link2 system that serves as a hub to control things like the Bose audio system, navigation, hands-free telephone use, and other driver aids such as Blind Spot warnings, self-parking, remote starting, etc. Overall the interior is luxuriously appointed and is certainly at the top of pile in its class. After spending a few hours with the car, both as driver and passenger, I had some

Car Review

Starting at around BHD 7,500, the Koleos offers tremendous value for money. The sheer quality of its design and equipment levels a vehicle in a far higher price bracket. is high enough to allow for some serious off-roading if it gets the engine and gearbox to match. In the top of the range 4x4 model that we tested, delivers an all-wheel drive system that permanently monitors grip levels to guarantee optimal traction in any condition. It is very easy to use, with a control switch situated to the left of the steering wheel enabling the driver to select one of the three modes: 2WD, 4WD AUTO or 4WD LOCK without removing their hands from the wheel. In 4WD AUTO mode, the system permanently analyses conditions and grip levels and uses the information provided by its sensors to calculate the ideal front/ rear torque split. Up to 50 percent of available torque can be transmitted to the rear wheels if necessary. When travelling off-road, the 4WD LOCK engages permanent four-wheel drive to distribute available torque equally between the front and rear axles (50/50).

concern as to the comfort of the rear seats on a long journey as the rake of the seat back is not far off vertical, which has no doubt been done to increase the rear load space, however, the driver and passenger seats were truly excellent, most especially with the ventilation on full during a hot day’s driving. At this time, all of the Middle East’s variants will be supplied with the 2.5-liter, 170 horsepower engine. The power of this combined with the weight of the car and the CVT gearbox, the X-Tronic

transmission, which has been designed to enhance driving enjoyment and reduce fuel consumption compared with conventional automatic transmissions. In my opinion, the current drivetrain positions the car more as a City SUV than a desert basher. The performance is rather sluggish, as the Koleos is a heavy car, which needs at least another 50 horsepower to make it a usable desert warrior, or even to tackle day to day overtaking on single track roads. The ground clearance of the car, at over 210mm, perhaps provides a pointer to Renault’s destination for the model, as this

However, all of the minor complaints above must be balanced against the cars price. Starting at around BHD 7,500, the Koleos offers tremendous value for money. The sheer quality of its design and equipment levels a vehicle in a far higher price bracket. Taken as a package, it will give its competition a good run for their money and may even force others to rise to the Renault’s standards.

Rocks Ibrida Ireland’s number one DJ, Kaila Troy, returned to Bahrain for a second time. TCK Productions in collaboration with Ground Rulez organised the visit during which DJ Kaila played at Ibrida, arguably the island’s most happening club. “Ibrida is a great venue and hosts many stateside acts across genres including House, Hip-hop, Dance, and even live bands,” said Dwan from TCK Productions. Though Kaila loves listening to R&B and Reggae, she loves playing Hiphop, EDM, House and Afro beats as well. “Every genre brings out a different energy from the crowd and I love the energy of these genres.” Kaila believes that a lot goes into

being a good DJ. She loves meeting other DJs and learning something from everyone. Kaila has also played in Chicago, where she lives, LA, New Orleans, Florida, New York, London, France, India, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. “I might have a gig coming up in Tanzania soon,” she said. Talking of New Year surprises, Kaila hopes to get back to New York and work with Wyclef Jean on her first music production. “We hope to bring her back to Bahrain in 2017,” said Dwan of TCK Productions.

Last Word

not giving a #@*%

I

n my life, I have given a #@*% about many people and many things. I have also not given a #@*% about many people and many things. And those #@*%s I have not given have made all the difference. People often say the key to confidence and success in life is to simply “not give a #@*%.” Indeed, we often refer to the strongest, most admirable people we know in terms of their lack of #@*%s given. Chances are you know somebody in your life who, at one time or another, did not give a #@*% - and went on to accomplish amazing feats. Perhaps there was a time in your life where you simply did not give a #@*% and excelled to some extraordinary heights. Because when we give too many #@*%s, when we choose to give a #@*% about everything, then we feel as though we are perpetually entitled to feel comfortable and happy at all times, that’s when life #@*%s us. Developing the ability to control and manage the #@*%s you give is the essence of strength and integrity. We must craft and hone our lack of #@*%ery. This may sound easy. But it is not. Most of us, most of the time, get sucked in by life’s mean trivialities, steamrolled by its unimportant dramas. This is no way to live. So get your #@*%s together. When most people envision giving no #@*%s whatsoever, they envision a kind of perfect and serene indifference to everything. This is misguided. There’s absolutely nothing admirable or confident about indifference. People who are indifferent are lame and scared. They are afraid of the world and the repercussions of their own choices. Therefore, they make none. They hide from this unfortunate thing demanding their time and energy called life. When we say, “Watch out, the guy just don’t give a #@*%,” we don’t mean that the guy doesn’t care about anything;

106 Bahrain Confidential January 2017

on the contrary, what we mean is he doesn’t care about adversity in the face of his goals, he doesn’t care about upsetting some people to do what he feels is right or important or noble. Because they know it’s right. They know it’s more important than

Because when we give too many #@*%s, when we choose to give a #@*% about everything, then we feel as though we are perpetually entitled to feel comfortable and happy at all times, that’s when life #@*%s us.

them and their own feelings and their own pride and their own needs. They say “#@*% it,” not to everything in life, but rather they say “#@*% it” to everything unimportant in life. They reserve their #@*%s for what matters. Friends. Family. Purpose. Burritos. And because of that, because they reserve their #@*%s for only the important things, people give a #@*% about them in return. And in a strange way, this is liberating. We no longer need to give a #@*% about everything. This simplification actually makes us really #@*%ing happy. Eric Hoffer once wrote: “A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people’s business.” If you find yourself consistently giving too many #@*%s about trivial stuff that bothers you, chances are you don’t have much going on in your life. And that’s your real problem. Way too many #@*%s given.
