Write Here, Write Now Hi, I was surprised to see so many interesting articles in your magazine. It’s a rarity in this part of the world where magazines publish images and listings. You guys have a great set of contributors who share their expertise in an entertaining and informative way. Long live good print! Lea Thanks, Lea. We are always working toward not being a run of the mill magazine. There’s a debate about whether print is on its way out and will online magazines replace it. To that we say – yes, bad print is, but news worthy print is here to stay!

Quintessential Collector’s Piece The Watch Boutique, a newly opened luxury boutique in Bahrain presents a timepiece that will take you into the future- Welder, since 2075. 22

July-Summer Edition 2015

sheer luxury

The Italian brand, Welder, is the definition of class and elegance in a Welded manner. Welder shows that big and bold is not equal to loud and bling. Rather big and bold needs to be subtle and tough. This watch doesn’t talk about timepieces from the past; rather it provides you, in metal and movement, what timepieces in the future will look like. It speaks highly of the labour of welding and the attention to toughness. A prominent casing style in the range of Welder watches is a dash of metal-born and rugged colours that stretch across the watch case and in some models, seep into the dials, unevenly and unconfined. The core of Welder seems more welded into its brand psychology. Many models have two and more separate movements in them, which let you, wear two and more time zones on your wrist. In the single movement watches, you can find chronograph movements for accuracy in short time measurements and many models with a simple single time movement (commonly called a three-hander). Even the most plain and simple Welder watches carry beauty and details of construction in case, dial, leather and rubber straps. “Some provide the feel of a cowboy’s belt and another of a ransacked leather pouch of a medieval age.” Welder is exclusively at The Watch Boutique, Seef Mall. Finding Your Creative Expression

introduces 'The Mural Lady', Michelle Pfeiffer Your Life:

When I was about 18 years old, I remember walking into the kitchen and announcing with full enthusiasm to my parents that I wanted to be an artist. My father didn’t like the idea. I compromised and studied graphic design at Humber College in Ontario. I graduated with Honours in June 1981, after which I worked in the advertising business for about 10 years. I couldn’t let go of this deep feeling inside that I wanted to paint. So in 1989, I enrolled at the Ontario College of Art 4 year fine art and experimental art program. Simultaneously, I embarked on a spiritual journey and learned to meditate. Exploring and discovering myself through creativity and spirituality made it the best years of my life. I felt alive and full of joy like a “kid in a sandbox.” Creativity naturally poured out of me, it was then that I thought-I want to share this process with others.

Your Interest In Murals:

I have painted on every imaginable surface- from furniture to shoes. So walls are just another surface to paint on. There are a lot of walls to paint in Bahrain! I love bringing colour and beauty where ever I can. I love transforming what others would consider garbage and making it beautiful again, especially oId furniture. 24

July-Summer Edition 2015

art space Murals represent community to me. I enjoyed painting outside at the Al Reem Centre in Riffa, (even though it was hot.) What better way to get to know a culture and connect to the community. I talked to people in everyday life, young and old. I love the conversations and reactions that I get, and how it opened up their feelings to creative conversations.

The Story Of Your Murals:

I have always loved symbols. The first mural that I painted at the Al Reem Centre in Riffa portrays the Hamsa (hand) an ancient symbol used in India, Middle East and Africa. It is a symbol of protection against evil. In this mural, the hand is giving blessings of love. The way we protect ourselves from negative energy is by always blessing people. It’s a reminder to always see the good in someone and good will come to you. In my meditation practice we call this the power of good wishes. The wings are a symbol of lightness, happiness and freedom. When you give positive energy to others, your heart will feel free and light.

The second mural was a work in progress. I had a strong intuition, so I got the idea to do a garden, but the meaning started to unfold as I painted. Each flower in the garden is one of us. We are all beautiful unique flowers in God’s garden. Then people passing started to add positive sayings and words according to how the garden made them feel. “Follow your heart.” “Success doesn’t come to you, you have to go for it.” “ Be grateful to the Creator.” “ Your own paradise inside you.” “Random acts of kindness.” “Stay calm.” Love Happiness Hope Dream July-Summer Edition 2015 25

Michelle Pfeiffer

“I want to be remembered as someone colourful, openhearted, loving and fun. Someone who can take the most boring task and make it fun and creative. To always find a solution to any situation instead of being the source of the problem. Someone who inspired people to take creative risks and to find their own unique creative expression.” – Michelle Pfeiffer

Your inspiration:

As long as I can remember I have loved colours, light, nature, beauty, harmony, esthetics, and bringing order to chaos. I just want to make everything beautiful, sometimes I think our world is so ugly and it disturbs me so I want to paint everything. My inspiration comes from nature, travel, music, my imagination and the teachings from my meditation path. I focus on God as the light of my inspiration, as much as possible I give Him the credit for anything I do. This keeps the ideas coming and the creative energy flowing and helps my intuition guide the process. Music also really inspires me. The words of songs open my heart when I am painting.

A Challenge For The Future:

I find every project I do has it’s own challenges. I never repeat the same thing and I always wonder will an idea as good as the last one come. There is an endless flow of creative energy inside and I am learning to trust it especially when I work spontaneously in front of the public. For more information, call Michelle on Tel. +973 35937094 or email: michelle@artwithheart.net or visit www.artwithheart.net 26

BENEATH YOUR FEET Melissa Nazareth scours the island for the oldest, authentic thread heads.

L

egend has it, that Cleopatra had her first encounter with Julius Caesar when she arrived at his feet rolled up in an Oriental carpet. Eager to take advantage of Caesar’s anger toward Ptolemy, Cleopatra had herself smuggled secretly into the palace and slipped past Ptolemy’s guards hiding in the carpet that Apollodorus the Sicilian was carrying.

History & Origin

All legends apart, history suggests that Oriental rugs (‘rugs’ has been used throughout this article to mean rugs and carpets though there are differences between both in terms of dimensions) have been around for centuries. For instance, the craft of rug weaving existed in Iran – formerly known as Persia – in ancient times as evident by the 2500-year-old Pazyryk carpet, dating back to 500 B.C. Also, the first documented evidence on the existence of Persian rugs comes from Chinese texts dating back to the 224–641 AD. Again, the fragments found in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian tombs are proof that flat weaving was well developed more than 4000 years ago. Further, historians confirm that weaving of pile rugs existed in the Middle East and other parts of central, northwest, and eastern Asia long before 2000 BC. Oriental rugs are not just adornments for floors; the ancient nomadic tribes used them as insulators for their

28

July-Summer Edition 2015

tents. Today, many collect second hand rugs of great value, frame them and hang them as art on their walls. Over the years, culture and tradition has influenced rug weaving as a craft. Travellers took their designs with them to the places they went to. For instance, Chinese designs like dragons can be found on Persian rugs and these came through the silk route.; the American Saruk design came to Iran in the 1920s. ‘Oriental’ is the broad term used for rugs that are made in Asian countries such as China and Vietnam in the east, Turkey, Maghreb, Cyprus and Iran in the west, the Caucasus in the north, and India and Pakistan in the south. They are organised by origin: Persian rugs, Pakistani rugs, Arabian rugs, Anatolian rugs, Kurdish rugs, Caucasian rugs, Central Asian rugs, Turkestanian rugs, Chinese rugs, Tibetan rugs and Indian rugs.

Where in Bahrain?

The oldest shop in the Kingdom, Bradran, has been dealing in oriental rugs since 1935. Located in the lane just before Gold City in Manama souq is its wholesale shop which supplies to other shops including their branches in Moda Mall and Al A’ali Mall. Bradran sells handmade rugs including Soumak (a rug made in the neighborhood of Shemakha in Azerbaijan, distinguished by a flat, napless surface and loose

local

threads at the back) and Kilim (a flat-woven rug made in Turkey, Kurdistan, and neighboring areas) which come in from Iran, Turkey, Kashmir (India) and Pakistan. If you’re a collector of Oriental rugs, you’ll know that second hand ones which are 40 years old and above fetch exorbitant amounts; some can be 100 years old or more and worth 20 to 30 million dollars! Bradran has been an avid collector for years and even has a fragment of a rug from the 16th century – it has a dragon design and originated in the Karabakh region in Iran. A couple of rugs from the 19th century are also part of their varied collection. Bradran has a tight network of rug makers who it is in close contact with for both, brand new and used rugs. In line with the many shops, once you enter Manama souq – Bab Al Bahrain - is the 2-decade old, Ali Baba Cave Antiques selling a beautiful collection of antiques including Oriental rugs. The owner here vows by his Iranian rugs and tells me that based on his experience they are more durable than those of most other origins. Typically, a traditional Iranian rug is tied with a single looping knot (Persian or Senneh knot), while the traditional Anatolian rug is tied with a double looping knot (Turkish or Ghiordes knot). The process of 'double knotting' in the latter results in a slightly more block like image compared to that in the former. Anatolian

style weaving also reduces the number of knots per sq cm. Today, it is common to see rugs woven in both Turkey and Iran using either of the two knot styles. Dotting the lane by Ferrari Center in Adliya aka 'shawarma alley', are a few more shops selling authentic, handmade rugs. These sprouted during the 1960s and have maintained their local and touristic clientele – Europeans, Americans, and high profile Arabs and Asians – to date.

How to decide authenticity and value?

Authenticity is key when investing in Oriental rugs. A thumb rule would be to turn the rug over – if the design is visible from the underside as well, it’s the real deal. The more the number of knots per square inch, the higher the value of the rug as it takes more time to make it – the best rugs have around 600 to 700 knots per sq inch. A rug which is 2x3 to 5x7 feet may take 6 months to 1 year if 1 person is working on it. Bigger ones with 2 to 3 people working on them may take up to a year and half. The value also

How unique or rare a rug is depends on the number of pieces of the same rug produced in a city or by a tribe. Naturally, the rarer it is, the higher the value.

depends on the material. For instance, prayer rugs always use silk and are pretty expensive compared to those made of cotton or wool. Another factor affecting value is the origin – there are many cities and tribes that make rugs. Their designs and colours vary from each other as every culture has a different influence on the craft of rug weaving. For instance, Isfahan uses black borders with colour inside, Na’in uses beige borders with either blue or green on the inside and Qum – rugs from the holy city in Iran – come only in pure silk, are 3x5 feet, and cost anything from BD700 to BD3,000.

We take a look at a few famous celebrities who own Oriental rugs. 1 Ben Affleck and wife, Jennifer Garner choose an antique Persian rug for their Savannah home. 2 Johnny Depp has a large Persian rug in his bedroom. 3 Maroon 5 singer, Adam Levine combines his large Persian rug with a purple velvet sofa. 4 TV presenter, Ellen Degeneres is very knowledgeable about large Persian rugs and has more than one in her beautifully decorated villa. Karoline Huber

IWC Schaffhausen Brand Director for Middle East & India The romantic new watches for women by IWC Schaffhausen’s new collection, The Portofino Midsize Collection brings the highest level of class and romance to the crowd. Jenny Thomas sat down with Karoline Huber for her full IWC story. So Karoline, you’ve been with IWC for a while now, what has your journey been like?

My journey started a lot earlier actually, when my father gave me an IWC watch when I was young. I fell in love with the watch and here I am, years later working for the brand that drove me to love watches and its process. My IWC journey has been exciting and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities to experience the various cultures and the various people. It has been a good journey and I love every part of it.

Tell me a little of the travelling exhibition of IWC Schaffhausen’s Portofino Midsize Collection.

Sometimes, the simplest designs tend to be the most romantic ones. The Portofino collection is slightly different than the other collections. They have smaller faces and more feminine touches like diamonds and sparkles and a moon face. The design was inspired by the glamour of the Italian Riviera during the 1950s and 60s. You can see that level of elegance through the mother-of-pearl dial and the little diamonds. All the watches in this collection are iconic. It’s a watch that isn’t complicated by functionalities, is a beauty by itself and is easy-to-wear.

The luxury industry in the Middle East is…

Ever Growing and Inspiring. The Middle East is a place where heritage and tradition are of great importance. So, mix that along with modern style. It’s a good combination to be in. The ME takes luxury and fashion seriously. So, to be in that kind of atmosphere has helped the brand evolve greatly in the region.

Plans for the future.

A lot of good things are in place for the near future. The year has definitely started off well with the re-launch of the Portofino Midsize Collection. We will be hosting a lot more interactive events, because it’s always wonderful to sit down and chat with people who admire the brand. IWC Schaffhausen is available at MODA Mall and City Centre Bahrain 32

Behind The Perfume Christopher Chong, Creative Director of Amouage Perfumes

Early morning conversations over a cuppa in the lobby of St. Regis Doha. That is how the Creative Director of Amouage Perfumes, Christopher Chong and Jenny Thomas got to talk about their mutual love for scents. Your journey with Amouage, how did it all start?

Well mostly by luck and chance. Amouage wanted fresh blood, ones that were preferable not from the industry. They wanted a person who would focus on the art of perfumes, innovation and one who wouldn’t hesitate to take a daring path. That was when I was brought into the picture, brought in to make one perfume, and I haven’t stopped since.

What is your inspiration behind your creations?

I have a very personal process to creating a scent. A lot of my inspiration comes from my musical background and my passion and love for the Opera, which is also my inspiration behind the Library Collection. I try to convert my thoughts and feelings into a story, which then transcends into the choices and mixtures of the different smells. A lot of my choices are also based on my experiences during travels.

Tell me about the brand new addition to the Library Collection- Opus IX.

Amouage’s ninth volume in the Library Collection, Opus IX, speaks of the human nature of love and sacrifice, which as I have mentioned earlier is inspired by one of Opera’s greatest romances, Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, an adaptation of the novel La Dame aux Camelias, ‘The Lady of the Camellias’. So, in a nutshell, Opus IX in its own way tells a story of betrayal and redemption as it is portrayed by the iconic Maria Callas in the 1958 Lisbon production of the Opera.

The structure and composition of Opus IX.

Opus IX is a beautiful interpretation of the Camellia flower (which was created especially for the fragrance as the flower in its natural form is odorless). When fused with black pepper and jasmine, the camellia accord reveals a warming, free-spirited aura in the top notes. The middle notes are gaiac wood, beeswax and leather that are combined with the woody, floral fragrance created by a base of grey amber, vetiver and civet. Opus IX’s bottle is a deep red with specks of gold. The tome-shaped box is designed with two interpretations of the Camellia flower: ^/ ?$" Z/1À( /# +/" / / /%"+ / /( 1( % / $ /7"( À / /3 7 Z/ ^/ /&( : /# +/#à +/( +/ 3 9 (/ / $ / $ (/%"+ / /( 3 / $ /+ % (À " / / betrayal. 34

ADAM BALUCH

‘YOUR’ CONCEPT OF LIVE LOOPING. The main piece of equipment I use for Live Looping is a RC300 loop station. All my instruments (guitar, keyboard, trumpet and vocals) go through this. I essentially record sections of what I am playing and repeat them and then record different instruments over the top to create a live band sound with actually just me. It involves using my feet a lot, as I have to record the sections using a pedal on the loop station.

YOUR FIRST EP – ‘ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS’. Answers To Questions is a snapshot of 10 years of music for me. It includes tracks that I wrote way back through to this year. So it represents a lot of change and evolution, but mostly a strong identity for the Adam Baluch ‘sound’. Essentially, this is something I want to share with people and see what they think of

it. I have been playing in and outside the UAE for years and during those gigs, I have included original tracks in my sets, but I have never spent time professionally recording them. It is all about finding the right time and I figured the right time was now! It took me three months to professionally record the EP. I have been wanting to get music out for years but it isn’t a cheap thing to do if you want it done properly, and it was also important to make sure I had the right team of people around me.

PERSONAL JAM. I really do listen to everything. In my sets, I play anything from hip-hop to soul to house remixes.

PERFORMANCE MEMORIES. I enjoyed playing in Bahrain a month ago when I was on a two-week tour with The Wailers. I had never been

there, and didn’t know what to expect, but it went well and I got a really great response.

GIGS OUTSIDE THE GCC. I am looking forward to playing in Ibiza. I have 4 gigs lined up and I want to see how my music works with a young, club environment. It’s great to raise your profile as a musician. There are so many people from around the world that visit Ibiza and well, they are all generally into music.

THE DREAM COLLABORATION. Dave Matthews Band or The Roots. They are great musicians and that’s what I appreciate.

talent

Each month, we bring you one ordinary reader who wows you with his/her extraordinary talent. This month we put...

Tarryn Pods

In The Spotlight Standing at an international ranking of 898 out of 2872 racers after completing 3 rounds of the 2014-15 championship season, Tarryn is off to a great start! In December 2014, she competed in the Red Bull Kart Fight in the Kingdom and was the only woman in the top 40 out of 400 to qualify; she finished 12th in her heat setting (for setting personal best time). She also finished 5th in the SWS sprint race and 6th overall for the 2014-15 season (the new season started in June this year).

home. “My uncle and I were banned from playing because we hated losing!” She still hates losing and hopes to make that sentiment work in her favour when she is racing. Tarryn also spent her childhood horse riding with friends. She had her own horse and participated in a few district level competitions. “Horse riding helped me focus.” Tarryn used to love insects as a child and collected them in her lunch box for her teacher to see! She has had a short stint at a veterinary clinic too.

What NOBODY knows about Tarryn?

Great start! But what next?

Having already done sprint races, Tarryn looks forward to compete in endurance races in the near future. “My team, the Racing Falcons, is hoping to do an endurance race in Dubai, in September this year,” she says. “I practice at least once in two weeks and hope to be more aggressive on the track because that’s what the sport demands.”

“I love art and used to be involved in it for a good 7 to 8 years back in South Africa,” she says. “I took up art design in high school.” She hopes to get back to it someday but is currently focused on her racing and teaching as it takes up most of her time. Tarryn hates being cold. “It’s one of those funny things about me,” she says, smiling. “I don’t like it when people play with the air conditioner in my classroom.”

Teacher by day…

“My heart’s with Ferrari!”

High-octane lifestyle, both on and off the track, best sums up the life of this South African racer. A teacher by profession, Tarryn spends her morning mentoring 3 year-olds. “They can be a handful and that’s an understatement,” she says. “They ask me tonnes of questions and though it’s challenging I love my job.” Tarryn has also worked in a senior position at a bank for 7 years when she lived in South Africa. When she travelled to Bahrain previously to watch the F1, she fell in love with the country and decided to make a permanent move. She believes she was lucky enough to get a teaching job.

Travel, Horse Riding & Board Games…

Tarryn loves travelling to new places and has been to Brasil, Mexico, Egypt, Dubai, Oman, France, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Greece, the UK, and the USA - NYC, Boston, New Mexico, Florida, Washington - so far. As a child, she loved board games and says that her dad used to bring many

“When I first started following motor sport in 2004, Michael Schumacher was still driving for Ferrari,” says Tarryn. “I fell in love with everything the team stands for – it has been into motor sport for the last 60 years, is a manufacturer and has this rich history and legacy.” Tarryn loves the colour red too! “I like Fernando Alonso as a driver but my team is Ferrari,” she continues. “I like his style of driving and that he is willing to take a chance when most drivers aren’t. He drives every lap like it’s his last and has a spirit that doesn’t give up! Vettel is great too.”

Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix…

“I loved the event as a whole,” says Tarryn who thinks it’s a great idea to have a night race for a number of reasons. “But they used the V6 engines,” says a disappointed Tarryn. “Previously they used the V8 engines and 2005 was when they last used the V10 – you could hear the karts going all the way round the circuit!”

How Fit Are You For Life? By Craig Heslop

Craig Heslop

To label you as fit, you must first look at the demands of your lifestyle. Do you sit for many hours each day? This is a particularly stressful demand on a normal body and requires conditioning to minimise its effects. If you are desk jockey, it is likely that your hips are guided up, your butt is weak and your posture is poor. Let’s do something about this before it is too late!

Roll your feet - use a stick to roll and massage tight fascia in your soles

A

component of fitness in my world is the ability to breeze through each day and still have energy left in the tank. As noted, excessive sitting is not natural, but that doesn’t mean you cannot be fit. Follow these three steps for three months and good things will happen. Please note, three months is the shortest time required to make long-term improvements. There is no such thing as a quick fix in the real world. If you cannot commit, you might as well turn the page now. Step one involves the basic principle of walkabout. This involves a thirty minute walk outside in the morning and another one in the evening. The reason for this is to open up your tight hips, wake up your butt plus improve your posture. Excuses for not walking every day include watching television, the hot summer and insufficient time. I 58

bottom squa

will let you provide suitable solutions to these excuses! Step two includes breaking the sit! This means you avoid sitting for more than one hour at a time. You can break the sit by taking a five minute walk or doing the three mobility drills seen in the picture. Pro–longed, undisturbed sitting has many ill-affects on the body including unfavourable hormone release and reduced metabulisation of fat. Set yourself an alarm on your phone or computer and commit to frequent movement. Step three involves sporadic moments of bottom squatting. This can be seen in the picture above. It is critical to promote a good range of motion through the ankles, knees and hips. Ask a young child to bottom squat and they will show you that it is easy. Sitting at a desk for many years can undo this instinctual ability. Ideally, you should be able to get your hips below your knees, your

t

heels on the floor and your back up straight in neutral. If you cannot achieve this, don’t worry. Just keep practising or join us at the jungle! These three steps are simple but to maintain consistency is not easy. If you can be amongst the few who can stay honest then good things will happen to you. It is as simple as walkabout, break-the-sit and bottom squads. To be fit is to move freely and have reserve energy when need. An unnatural lifestyle can disrupt the desire to be fit. Take the necessary steps to counter today’s unnatural lifestyle.

OUR CONSCIOUSNESS Our values are demonstrated by our actions. Actions begin as thoughts, feelings and emotions. Clear definitions of the different aspects of consciousness are necessary to understand the origins and processes of our thinking. It is also necessary to establish the link between the state of human consciousness or self-awareness and the decline or rise in human values.

T

he Raja Yoga Meditation provides in depth teachings about consciousness from the understanding that this is the self. The self is considered as the soul. The word soul is used interchangeably with consciousness and with spirit. All three words are also used to denote the conscious self, that is, the eternal, immortal, self-aware inner being and animating force. Although some spiritually inclined people have had visions of the soul, visions do not provide them with knowledge of it. The soul is truly a star. There are as many souls as there are human beings. The body of a person is visible with the eyes but the soul can be seen only with divine vision. People have different facial features but souls are not different in appearance. All are the same: a point of light. It is just the role of every soul that is different. Human beings are large or small whereas souls are not of varying sizes. The size of the soul is the same. A soul is eternal and imperishable. In today’s world, one moment people are living together in harmony

60

July-Summer Edition 2015

and the next moment they are violently against each other, because they do not know about spiritual relationships. The ongoing task is to consider you to be a soul. Avoid getting trapped in false ego, which is also called body-consciousness. The prime obstacle in developing and cultivating human values is that globally we live in a materialist culture in which almost all individuals are strongly habituated to body-consciousness and realities experienced through sense perception. The most important fundamental concept is that the human soul is the self who is aware of existing. The human soul is only able to be conscious of its individual and separate existence when incarnated in a human body. You are either aware of yourself as a soul, or you are aware of yourself as a body. True consciousness is when the soul is aware of itself as a soul. You say, “I am the soul and this is my body”. False consciousness is when the soul is aware of itself as a body. Then you say, “I am my body”. This is an illusion because the soul is not its body. In true

consciousness positive qualities and values fuel thoughts. In false consciousness negative qualities and anti-values fuel thoughts and passions. It is essential to distinguish between “Who am I?” and “What is mine?”, between the possessor and the possession, subject and object. The following articles aims to establish the primary of the soul over the body, soul-consciousness over bodyconsciousness and spirituality over materialism. When the primacy is reversed there is unsustainable imbalance. Soul-consciousness engenders balance. The consequences of these two mutually exclusive states of consciousness are far reaching. Soul-consciousness or true consciousness prompts spiritual qualities and values to occupy a dominant position within the awareness of any individual. On the other hand body-consciousness or false consciousness prompts the reverse. Individual awareness is then dominated by negative qualities and the tendency to give greater priority to material values. Spiritual values may be missing altogether. By practicing soul-consciousness you can

achieve a stage of detachment, maturity and emotional balance. This evokes a higher quality of perception and response. The aim of meditation and spiritual study is to become morally and ethically able to live with others harmoniously, with love and respect. As you progress with meditation your conscience becomes gradually more refined and your inner standards or morality and ethics rise. Souls are many. Each one is individual and eternal. A soul is an infinitesimal pinpoint of self-aware, spiritual light. A soul can neither be created nor destroyed but its quality and strength are subject to change and degeneration over time. A soul is considered a divine creation because the positive energy of God, the Supreme Soul, influences and re-energises each soul when it has become totally depleted. Unlike matter, souls are conscient and therefore intelligent. They can absorb not only energy but also ideas, powers, spiritual values and qualities. A soul is incorporeal, indivisible and indestructible. During its cycle, it varies from a state of perfect purity to a condition of depletion and impurity according to both the quality of action performed through its material body and the degenerating effects of time. God is One. God is the Supreme Soul, the Omnipotent. Supreme Intelligence. God is incorporeal, eternal and indestructible, ever pure and, unlike souls, is immutable. God is the only soul who neither evolves nor degrades. God is the only soul who does not become bound to matter

and the cycle of rebirth, the only soul who remains self-aware for all time, and the only soul who dwells perpetually in the highest and most pure region or dimension beyond matter. God is the Rita Moussallem Sustainer of all souls of all religions, races and cultures. God is the source of all qualities, virtues, values and wisdom. These treasures are transferred to souls through meditation. Souls are then restored to full self-awareness and the perfection of their original purity. This transference of power, purity, values and qualities is considered the re-creation of the souls. Matter is everything that exists in the physical universe; it is the physical universe. Science has established that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. The quality of matter degenerates, known as the process of entropy, due to the effect of time and motion. The degeneration of the quality of matter also corresponds to the degeneration of the quality of human souls.

The Sense Of Touch

Last month Dr. Jamilla Al Qasser generally touched upon Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST). This month, we focus more on the effects of ‘The Touch’.

T

he Sense of Touch is basically from different pressure points, which help collect information from your brain through the sensation in your fingers.

scientists call, the whole body function. The whole body system lives in a more coherent way, a new perceptive. The whole brain functioning is associated with increase in creativity and problem solving ability.

When people undergo a lot of stress, the body system tends to get congested and over activated. Undesirable habits and tension due to long time stress is undoubtedly bad for health. Many ailments are partially or predominantly caused by stress, negative emotion or emotional trauma. That is exactly what happens to majority of the patients.

Isn't it amazing that we have an effective method for integrating the whole body with its high performance and functionality!

What do BCST therapists do?

BCST practitioners, on a daily basis, reconnect bio dynamically to the patient's healthy roots. In simple terms, the therapists once again find the connection of the body that cooperates with life force. Biodynamical potency tells where the patient needs work, where and when to support regulating the patient's system, how and what to do to achieve Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) self regulation. Through practitioner principles, tools and work approach, that process will achieve a balance, which then regulates and reactivates the patient’s internal system. This process means to find and achieve body synchronisation. The more balanced body state is called synchrony or synchronisation. It means as your body becomes more balanced, you tap more into what

64

July-Summer Edition 2015

With series of BCST sessions, the body creates a new way of structure that can easily handle the sense-feltperceptive touches. Now, the human life and health is dependent upon the craniosacral system, which is within the body. It is medically acknowledged as a natural, continuous body rhythm that promotes and maintains life in the body (along with the respiratory and circulatory systems). Craniosacral refers to the two ends of the Central Nervous System that we work with conventionally – the head and the tail end of the spine. The Central Nervous System (CNS ) consists of the brain, spinal cord, the spinal nerves and the related membranes and fluids that surround the nervous system. Working with and through the Central Nervous System allows the therapy to affect whole system. The craniosacral rhythm can be felt all over the body as a slow wave like motion. This rhythm is caused

by the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes and nourishes the brain and nervous system. The fluid is enclosed in membranes, which lines the bones of the head (cranium), passes down the vertebral column and attaches again at the sacrum – hence the name “craniosacral”. By gently touching areas of the head and body, a therapist can tune into the rhythmic fluctuations of the craniosacral system, working on it diagnostically and therapeutically. Craniosacral sessions enhance the natural flow and support the inner balance of a person’s system. A session typically lasts for 30 – 40 minutes. The client lays down on a session table as the practitioner works with gentle, listening touch and receptive perception. A series of sessions are recommended for a problem to be completely resolved. Due to its gentle nature, it is received well by infants, children and the elderly, This work is also beneficial in the absence of a problem as it brings a person into deep relaxation balance with the feeling of being nourished from within.

THE POWER OF COMPOUNDING C ompound interest is one of the greatest mathematical discoveries. Albert Einstein is believed to have commented that compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. It is the interest earned on interest. At the end of each year interest earned is added to the original amount and the amount is reinvested. Over a period of time, it produces much higher amount than simple interest. Thus money grows exponentially through the power of compounding. To understand compound interest, let's first look at the basic of all calculations, which is called "simple interest". With simple interest you only earn interest on the principal you invested initially. For example, if you invest $1,000 at 5% simple interest per year, you will get $50 per year. If you are invested for five years, the total amount you would get is $250, which makes your total value $1,250. Now, let's see how it works under the compound interest method. F = P( 1+i)

n

F= final amount including the principal. P = the principal amount. i = the rate of interest per year. n = the number of years invested. Applying the formula, say you have $1,000 to invest for five years at 5% compound interest. 5

F = 1,000(1+0.05) = $1,276.28 You can see that your $1,000 is worth $1,276.28 after five years compared to $1,250 under the simple interest method. The final amount will be much higher if the compounding frequency is half-yearly

68

July-Summer Edition 2015

or quarterly (as followed by banks in some countries on term deposits and loans). Thus, the power of compounding produces a snowball effect as earnings generate even more earnings. Time is a crucial element in compounding. Cumulative fixed deposits are a prime example of the compounding effect. Retirement accounts also provide a fine example as principal amount is allowed to grow for a long time on tax-deferral basis or without any tax incidence. The sooner you start investing, the better, as every day spent investing is a day your money is earning for you. You may wonder if the power of compounding is applicable in fixed income investments only. That's not the case. It works in any investment where compounding is applied. Hence it applies to stock market investments as well. Even though stocks do not pay annual interest as in the deposit shown in the above example, they do pay dividends on a periodical basis and their values tend to rise over time. Assume you bought stocks worth $1,000 and the value increases 5% after a year, then your investment is worth $1,050. If it rises 5% again next year the value of your investment rises to $1,102.50. The value becomes $1,157.63 at the end of the third year at the same rate of growth. The value rises to $1,215.51 and to $1,276.28 at the end of fourth and fifth year respectively at the 5% rise per year. Assuming you received an annual dividend of 5% on the stock during the investment period and you reinvested those amounts in the same stock, the total

Tholoor M. Thomas

account value increases to $1,610.51 at the end of five years. This way the power of compounding works in stock market investments also. While this calculation is true under the given assumptions, you should also be aware that any fall in the stock's price or dividend cut during the period will significantly reduce the final account value. However, given a longer time horizon, stock prices are supposed to deliver returns much higher than fixed income returns. Remember the power of compounding can make you richer, the earlier you start saving. Don't procrastinate on starting to save. Teach your children the art of compounding and get them on the compounding bandwagon as well. They will thank you for your advice once they reach your age.

Angela McDonough lists Europe's most lucrative destinations in a two-part feature.

Dinant, a town in Belgium

A country with so much to offer but with the current economic climate it’s not for the faint hearted so you won’t make a fast buck. This is definitely one for the long term and money can still be made whilst tourists are still visiting and the rental market is growing. So if you can afford to take on a bit of a risk then why not? It truly is a stunning country and fortune favours the bold!

BELGUIM No. 9

Growing in popularity with tourists and is it any wonder with so many historic towns and cities. They can also generate rental returns of at least 5.3% which is pretty impressive! Our advice is to invest in tourist accommodation with a guaranteed return and you won’t go far wrong. Some of Europe’s largest developers and best management companies are in Belgium at the moment so you have to ask yourself, why? We reckon it will move up the ranks quite quickly.

TURKEY No. 7

This country caught the eye of the keen investor a number of years ago with double digit growth surpassing the likes of China and India. However, things have definitely started to slow down which does provide more realistic returns. The risk is not too high and it’s not too late to make some money, just to do your research. Turkey is still in it’s infancy so it’s extremely important to go with a developer and management company that has a proven track record.

PORTUGAL No. 6

With beautiful green landscapes you can see why people make this both an investment and lifestyle choice. This is probably why the Golden Visa is growing in popularity. Invest €500K in property and you can obtain citizenship and free visa travel throughout Europe for your whole family. What’s not to like? The property market is fairly mature so they are totally geared up for the foreign investors that have been flocking here in their droves over the last number of years.

GERMANY No. 8

A new location for the sophisticated investor that’s looking to diversify their portfolio with net returns of at least 5% and VAT rebates from the government. Germany is still seen as a safe, stable and secure bet and as such is a firm favourite with the banks. Germans also like to rent their properties so the market is fruitful. Just keep your exit strategy in mind and select carefully. The legal system is robust and it is therefore very safe for foreigners to invest.

Stories of a Trailing Spouse Maria Sorger discusses the perks and challenges of a portable company.

E

very expat woman has heard it many times over “We are leaving, my company is moving me to Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Paris…” Wherever you may be going, this short and simple phrase is often welcome as you start to think of all the new places to see, new friends to make and exciting new adventures to be had. But it also means quitting your job, which was not easy to find in the first place, and starting the search all over again as you land in a new country. As an expat nomad or a trailing spouse it can sometimes be simpler to have your own business - one that is as movable as you are. I guess this is what people often refer to as a ‘portable company’. What this means is that you need to set up your business in the country you live in and do it in such a way that it can easily be moved. It all sounds very straightforward but there are challenges

“If you don’t plan on purchasing products or carrying inventory, your start-up costs can be kept to a minimum” along the way: you have to bear in mind whether the new country you will call your home is the right one for your type of business offering - will your product or service be marketable there? Will you be able to register your company? Do you need a ‘local’ partner? Will the name resonate well with the existing culture?

Maria Sorger

Generally speaking, companies offering a range of services – interior design, coaching, marketing, catering, party planning, website design, relocation services, online business, et al – are easily movable. If you don’t plan on purchasing products or carrying inventory, your start-up costs can be kept to a minimum - you can work from a small office or a rented business office. But in order to gain credibility in a new market you have to make sure you are an expert in your field and that you have the right qualifications for the job. One of the challenges that some businesses face is finding reliable suppliers and contractors – for example if you are an interior designer, you need to source out furniture stores and hardware stores, and have a list of qualified plumbers, electricians, painters and so on. Getting clients is a challenge too and the universal way to do it is network, network, and network. Start with your friends – women are fantastic at networking and spreading the word; join various organisations such as women groups, business organisations or societies; scan the local newspaper daily to find out what's happening in town, and of course use social the media platforms. And when your business is moving along smoothly, clients have come to rely on you, your profits are rising, it’s probably time to pack up and travel to another country where you will start the whole process all over again - each time equipped with additional knowledge and invaluable experiences. T

he Kingdom of Bahrain is participating at Expo Milano 2015 in Milan, Italy. Themed ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’, the expo runs up until 31st October and has 24 well trained, Bahrain-based volunteers representing the country. In an attempt to showcase the nation’s 5000-year old rich history, the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities commissioned a 2,000sq cm pavilion at the expo which is said to attract over 20 million visitors from all over the world. The pavilion presents an interpretation of relationships that tie the country’s agrarian heritage and culture together. The Pavilion – Archaeologies of Green Titled Archaeologies of Green, Bahrain’s pavilion is among 147 official participants. Archaeologies of Green is conceived as a continuous landscape of

fruit gardens that each contain a dominant fruit tree that is native to Bahrain and are intersected by a series of closed spaces that contain in turn a reception area, exhibition spaces and a café serving local Bahraini food. The spaces all overlook and frame the gardens, which form the main exhibition component of the pavilion and recount the rich agrarian heritage of the Islands. The centerpiece of the pavilion consists of 10 distinct fruit gardens, each containing trees native to Bahrain, bearing fruit at different times throughout the 6 months. The pavilion also showcases historic artefacts daring back thousands of years, each related to the deep-rooted agrarian traditions and legends that surround Bahrain as the location of the Garden of Eden and the Land of One Million Palms.

The pavilion is designed by architect, Anne Holtrop and landscape architect, Anouk Vogel, and built out of white prefabricated concrete panels; the pavilion will be moved to Bahrain at the end of the expo and rebuilt to serve as a botanical garden. World’s Most Overlooked Buildings Sometimes the lesser-known buildings are the most beautiful ones. They are worthy structures that often go without recognition. So, with the help of Lamudi, a Global Property Network, Bahrain Confidential shows you some of these stunning, yet overlooked structures from around the world.

Pakistan Monument Location: Islamabad, Pakistan Pakistan’s stunning flower-shaped national monument represents the country’s four provinces and three territories. From the air, the monument appears in the shape of a star and crescent moon - reflecting the symbols shown on Pakistan’s flag.

Islamic Development Bank

Museo el Castillo

Location: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Location: Medellín, Colombia

While the Kingdom Center Building is easily Saudi Arabia’s most recognisable building, the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah is just as noteworthy. Combining Islamic design with modern architecture, the structure is actually two individual towers united under a single roof structure to give the appearance of a single office building.

A French castle is the last thing visitors to Colombia’s second largest city would expect to see. Once the home of a wealthy family, the Museo el Castillo was built in 1930 in the style of a Gothic castle encircled with French-style gardens. The building now houses the belongings of its former tenants, including artwork and furniture.

travel Shwenandaw Monastery Location: Mandalay, Myanmar This historic Buddhist monastery is one of the best examples of traditional Burmese teak architecture and wood-carving in Myanmar. Also known as the Golden Palace Monastery, the structure is the only surviving building of the former Royal Palace built by King Mindon in the mid-nineteenth century.

Makoko Floating School Location: Lagos, Nigeria Built for the waterfront slum of Makoko in Nigeria’s largest city, the floating school is a pilot project that is designed to address the twin challenges of climate change and population growth in coastal Africa. The wooden school structure is built on a floatation platform made of plastic barrels and was produced using local materials and resources.

Pagaruyung Palace Location: Western Sumatra, Indonesia Pagaruyung Palace was the royal palace of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, the seat of the Minangkabau kings of West Sumatra. It is an example of traditional Rumah Gadang architecture, the style of housing built by the Minangkabau ethnic group. Originally built from timber, the palace has been destroyed by fire several times, most recently in 2007. These days it houses a museum and is a popular tourist destination.

Museum of Islamic Arts Location: Doha, Qatar Located on the Doha waterfront, the museum houses a large collection of Islamic art, as well as an education center and a library. The building’s design by award-winning architect I.M. Pei was heavily influenced by ancient Islamic architecture and draws its inspiration from the Mosque of Ibn Tulun in Cairo. Moulay Ismail Mausoleum Location: Meknès, Morocco The mausoleum is the final resting place of Moulay Ismail Ibn Sharif, a sultan of Meknès in the 17th Century and one of Morocco’s greatest rulers. Open to non-Muslim visitors, the building’s beautiful courtyards and inner shrine are stunning examples of Moroccan craftsmanship.

Moscow School of Management Location: Skolkovo, Russia

Designed by Tanzanian-born architect David Adjaye, the Moscow School of Management, or SKOLKOVO, is the largest private business school in Russia. The building was designed to function as an entirely independent community to protect its residents from the country’s harsh winters. José Vasconcelos Library Location: Mexico City, Mexico Named after José Vasconcelos, the philosopher and former president of the National Library of Mexico, this building is both a library and a botanical garden. The steel, concrete and glass building is offset by its natural surroundings of water and gardens. But it is the stunning interior of this building that secures its inclusion on this list.

Summer-proof Your Ride!

A few tips on how to keep your car in good condition this season. Car maintenance is something we all know about but tend to ignore. Like any machine, your car needs to be used well and taken care off especially during the hot months. Summers in Bahrain can be merciless and so here are a few pointers that promise to offer you a smooth drive throughout!

• Keep car’s interior cool while parked: Parking your car in the hot sun can damage the interior – brittle dashboards, discoloured seat covers etc. It can also cause the engine to heat up. Consider putting a sun shade in the windshield while the car is parked.

• Park in the shade: Let’s say it’s easier to find a polar bear in the dessert than parking (let alone parking in the shade). But try to do so whenever possible. • Check the battery: Make sure your battery is in good shape to keep your car starting in high temperatures. Don’t forget to keep glancing at the gauge while you’re driving lest the engine heats up. • Check the coolant: Coolant helps prevent your engine from overheating. As high temperatures move in, make sure your coolant is properly filled.

Don’t forget to keep glancing at the gauge while you’re driving lest the engine heats up. 104 Bahrain Confidential July-Summer Edition 2015

• If you can, avoid the heat: If the temperatures are expected to be really high, and you’re worried about your car’s performance, try to avoid driving during the hottest times of the day. Instead, try to run errands and travel during the morning or evening hours.

Letter From Bahrain John Ridley reminisces good times with his pet, Poppy.

R

egular readers will know of Poppy and our life with her. Patrick, my son, was just three years old when my wife lifted him over the barn gate; almost immediately, a beautiful black and white puppy walked over to meet him - it was love at first sight. That evening she came home with us, beginning a fourteen-year loving relationship between Poppy and the rest of the family. Living with Jasper, the cat, could present a few challenges; there was a respect for each other, but also a rivalry - especially in the kitchen; on winter’s evenings, there could be a struggle to lie next to the log fire. Much to Poppy’s annoyance, Jasper would often join us on walks across the farm fields; and occasionally he’d take Poppy’s bed, whilst she would never drive him, she would reclaim the bed as soon as we intervened. Paddling and bathing in the sea were one of her favoured pastimes; she loved the coolness of the water on her chest and the smell of the salty wind blowing in her face. During summer walks in the fields, she was sure to lie down in the grass, waiting for a tummy tickle - which she always had. At home, my office is in an old farm building overlooking the garden and often Poppy would lie under my desk; otherwise, she’d lie in the cool grass outside - never more than a few feet from me. For a long time, we proudly displayed her rosette - won for coming second place in a dog show “sausage race”. This endurance challenge required her to walk 50 metres with a sausage - without eating it; she almost completed the course! Over the last couple of years she lost her hearing, very quickly we all learned a sign language, she understood everything. Sadly she became increasingly frail, arthritis left her unable to walk; today, whilst in the garden, she passed away peacefully in our arms. Naturally, we are heartbroken, but we have been privileged to share our lives, and a true and deep love with her. Some may doubt that dogs have emotions similar to us; those of us who have spent a lifetime with them will be in no doubt - dog and man can share a deep, unconditional love; we certainly did, and will never forget our life with Poppy.

ARABIAN CAMELS BY NADINE COMPTON

Just off the Janabiyah Highway there are hundreds of camels. You can find big camels, baby camels, and camels sitting, standing, eating, and rolling around in the sand trying to scratch their back or, err hump.

Nadine Compton

Arabian Camels

W

e all know that camels were once used, and in some places still are, by the Bedouin and other nomadic peoples as beasts of burden because of how well they are adapted to surviving in the desert. Just what the Royal Camel Farm is for is a bit more of a mystery. Websites claim that it was established by a sheikh and exists to maintain a camel population in Bahrain. A man who tended to the camels at the farm told us a different story. In fact the whole visit was an experience of contradictions, I guess something not too surprising when you live in this part of the world. At the entrance, a sign stated “Stop! Private Property,” but we were waved on in and there were tourists milling about. A

notice board put up by security asked visitors to please keep a safe distance from the camels, but you could see people petting them and attempting to take selfies. (Camelfies anyone? No?) As my friend and I walked between the chained male camels on one side of the farm and the calves and mothers on the other, we came across a farm worker sitting down with a couple camels who were munching away at alfalfa. And even though security warned against feeding them, he said it was fine if we did. I asked him if all these camels were for racing and he said, “No, they are for eating.” I asked him to explain and he said that the camels were slaughtered for consumption on special occasions such as Eid. How lovely. Why couldn’t there be signs warning visitors from making emotional attachments? My friend went on enthusiastically

reminding me how great he thought camel milk is because it cleans out your system, but all I could think about were the camels eating feed a stall over that dropped food on each other’s heads as they bent down to eat their feed. So innocent! But hey, one man’s camel is another man’s turkey. Next Thanksgiving, I’ll just have to think about baby turkeys and their mothers and contemplate going vegetarian. You can reach the Royal Camel Farm from Saudi Arabia by taking the first exit off the King Fahd Causeway. You will merge onto the 101 and come to Wali Al Ahd Highway. Turn right on to Janabiyah Highway. Turn left at the first intersection to come to the farm. Admission is free. The farm is open all day, every day.

WHITE BAHRAINI PRAWNS & TOMATO PASTA Serves 4 to 6

Ingredients: • 500gms of your favourite pasta (I love rigatoni!) • 24 large, local prawns peeled and deveined • 2tbsp olive oil • 1tbsp lemon juice • 2tbsp chopped red onions • 2tsp finely chopped garlic • ½ tsp chopped green chilli (optional) • 2 cups chopped ripe, local tomatoes • 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil leaves • Salt & pepper to taste

Method:

“Light and fragrant, this dish is a full meal on one plate. Easily digestible seafood proteins, vegetables and carbs make it an ideal summer lunch or dinner. The best part - you can cook it in the same time that it takes to cook the pasta itself!” 108 Bahrain Confidential July-Summer Edition 2015

• Bring a large pot (up to 6 litres) of salted water to a roaring boil and throw in the pasta - follow the packet recommendations for cooking time. • `In the meantime, heat the olive oil in a large sauté pan and add the onions and basil. • Cook for 2 minutes or until the onions are translucent and light golden in colour. • Add the garlic and stir well, paying attention not to burn it (no more than 1 minute). • Add the prawns, toss well and immediately after that add the tomatoes & chillies. • Increase the heat to maximum and cook for further 3 to 4 minutes. • Adjust salt and pepper, and remove from heat (we don’t want to overcook the prawns). • At this point pasta should be ready. Drain and reserve a cup of the cooking water. • Add the pasta to the sauce (or vice versa) and toss well. • Cook for 1 minute more, adding a little bit of the water only if the sauce seems too dry. • Serve immediately!

We love the Adliya branch of David’s Stir Fry because it is just a couple of minutes away from our office. Hop, skip and jump! So the restaurant has a welcoming ambience, which is only the beginning of what’s in store of impressing you. This Chinese restaurant prides itself in serving only the freshest items of the day. If you are craving genuine, fresh and tasty Chinese and Vietnamese food re-created, this should be your destination. A few of our favourite dishes are the Roast Peking Duck, which is hand carved and served with hand rolled pancakes, fresh cucumber, scallion and the David’s Stir Fry special sauce. Let’s not forget the Mongolian beef, the dumplings, the lettuce wraps with crisp chicken, and scorpion prawns. And it never is nice leave a restaurant without having dessert, which is why we recommend the Fried Bananas with ice cream. It is one of the most loved restaurants in Bahrain, which is why they were awarded this year, the Certificate of Excellence by tripadvisor. It’s a top notch Chinese restaurant a must eatery. Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
