Super Spider: The Ferrari 296 GTS
Ferrari’s first-ever rear-wheel-drive hybrid 296 GTS is one of the most agile Ferraris we have driven on the roads of Bahrain. Starting from the stunning grounds of Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa, Ishaq Madan cruised along rather silently on the west coast of the island. The convertible provides an incredibly powerful driving experience, packing a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, AKA “La piccolo v12” (“the small v12”).
It is without a doubt that Ferrari has produced a supercar that makes you feel like a super driver. The 14-second roof activation while driving puts you at the centre of attention. The V6 can produce 654 bhp. Add the electric motor, and the Spider produces a maximum of 516 lb-ft of torque, rocketing from zero to 100 kph in just 2.9 seconds. n
Six Ways to a Healthy Ramadan
Ditch the addictions
An effective way to deal with addictions is to start early and prepare your body for the month of fasting. Withdrawal can be a daunting experience. However, mindfulness practices like breathing and light physical exercise are some ways to maintain distance from addictions. Get creative and keep your mind occupied. Before the month of fasting begins, reduce your coffee consumption and have your first cup long after you wake up. The same rules apply to nicotine addiction.
Move often
Feeling drained of energy comes with the long hours of fasting. With temperatures soaring throughout the month, staying focused and active is difficult. Moving for a bit every hour improves blood circulation, giving you micro boosts to keep yourself going throughout the day. Take a walk around the office or stretch at your desk. But ensure you don’t engage in exhausting exercise, lest you get thirsty.
Stay hydrated
Did you know you could stay hydrated without having a drop to drink all day? Yes, you guessed right - consuming fruits rich in Vitamin C while breaking your fast can ensure your body has the reserves to keep you hydrated while fasting. It’s also imperative to reach out for water instead of sodas and coffee - they don’t really quench your thirst.
Eat foods that take longer to digest
Include complex carbohydrates and slow-digesting
vegetables like peas, carrots, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers in your meal, especially at Suhoor (predawn). Make brown rice and rolled oats part of your meals as well. Fasting all day can deplete your energy reserves; it’s good to have the nutrients stay in the system for as long as possible. The idea is to supply bite-sized energy to your body to keep you going through the day.
Consume nutrient-rich foods
Having an extra helping of certain foods can ensure a high nutrient count in your system. Magnesium is essential in breaking down glucose into energy. Almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, whole grains, and fish are rich sources of magnesium.
Iron helps you stay energetic by carrying more oxygen throughout your body. Add bananas, apples, and spinach to your meals.
Good fats, such as Omega-3s and HDL fats, are good to include in your diet as they assist your body in absorbing other nutrients—for example, fish, nuts, coconut oil, and avocado.
Eat consciously
Regular meals become huge feasts during the month of Ramadan. When hunger pangs soar, it’s only natural to feel like eating much more than your body really needs. If you’re going to eat to your heart’s fill, you might want to consider foods that are good for your heart. Avoid deep-fried foods, and limit your consumption of salt. n

Staying Motivated During Ramadan
Working during Ramadan is rewarding, but it is not without challenges. Feeling uninspired and less productive during the month of fasting can take its toll on your overall well-being and daily activities. In order to maintain your endurance during the month, self-care is of the utmost importance. Consider some (or a combination of all) of these practices to help you improve your motivation throughout the Holy month.
Consume an adequate suhoor meal
Remember, you don’t have to overeat when you are trying to break your fast during suhoor. Instead, eat a moderate portion because overeating will leave you exhausted and unenergised.
Avoid Caffeine
Caffeine could help you feel alert on a regular basis, especially if you are sleepy. Caffeine, on the other hand, should be avoided during the fasting month because it can upset your stomach and make you sick.
Modify your sleep schedule
Establish two sleep schedules: one at night and one
during the day. If you have a terrible bedtime ritual late, make sure you break it. Lack of quality sleep can affect your energy levels. Fall asleep early because you will need to get up earlier than usual during Ramadan. After suhoor and morning prayers, the second schedule begins.
Limit screen time
Thanks to our advanced smartphones and gadgets, it is easier to set screen time regulations and take a break from the digital world. The amount of information we are privy to these days can be overwhelming. Make some time for creative activities instead - writing, painting, photography. Spending some quality time with your family is also a great way to improve your overall well-being.
The bottom line…
So, there you have it – the four tips for staying motivated while fasting. By combining them, you can increase your chances of success. Determine what works best for you and put it into practice. n
Working Out During Ramadan
You’ve set your fitness goals for the year and taking a break during the month of Ramadan may seem to set you back. Exercising with caution is important especially when you’re fasting. However, picking the right time to work out, eating right, and choosing the right mode of exercise make it possible for you to keep up with your goals and maintain your fasting schedule undeterred. Feeling stuck? Let some of these tips help you out.
Timing
The best times for a workout regime during Ramadan are right after breaking your fast or before your main Iftar meal. If you’re an early riser, consider training just before Suhoor. Make sure to check in on your hydration levels if you’re planning to exercise before breaking your fast.
What to Eat?
To replenish your energy stores before and after training, it's recommended to consume carbohydrates. Opt for healthy choices like vegetables and whole grains instead of pasta and rice. For muscle repair, lean meats, beans, lentils or protein shakes are good options. It's also important to stay hydrated during non-fasting hours.
Training the Right Way
When fasting, the body may use stored carbs and proteins for energy, leading to a decrease in muscle mass. To prevent this, it is recommended to do resistance training such as bodyweight exercises such as squats, lunges, push-ups or weighted exercises such as deadlifts, shoulder presses, chest presses, and rows to maintain muscle mass.
To avoid using protein for energy during fasting, it's recommended to keep cardio exercises to a minimum. High-intensity cardio can deplete glycogen stores and lead your body to tap into its protein reserves. If you still want to engage in cardio, taking a walk before Iftar can be a safe way to burn some calories.
Consult Your Doctor
Consult with your doctor before starting or continuing an exercise routine during Ramadan, especially if you have underlying health concerns. Listen to your body and take breaks if you experience any signs or symptoms of fatigue or dehydration. Exercise can promote physical and mental well-being during this holy month if done safely and effectively. n
The Return of Khaimat al Khaleej at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain
In an island like Bahrain, the sense of community and togetherness is strong and vital to the culture and people. Ramadan, as much as it is a month of reflection and devotion, it’s also a time for communities to spend time together.
One of the biggest locations on the island for social gatherings to happen during the month of Ramadan is the Khaimat Al Khaleej tent. Perched on the grounds of The Gulf Hotel Bahrain, Khaimat al Khaleej (meaning The Gulf Tent) accommodates over 400 guests gathering for Iftar and Ghabga during Ramadan.
An additional buffet tent joins the main dining venue to amplify the spread of food and beverages, featuring a variety of cuisines and live cooking stations.
Khaimat al Khaleej will house a bread oven, live carving and barbecue along with food and delights from Lebanese, Bahraini, Persian, Mediterranean, Indian, Japanese, and Egyptian cuisines every night.
Ramadan favourites such as manakish, local quozi mufata, roasted chicken-sirloin-ribeye, Argentinean grill, teppanyaki, sushi, tempura, shawarma, sheesh kebab, sheesh tawok, jujeh and koobideh kebab are lined up to offer diners a range of delicacies to choose from.
Spend your Ramadan evenings at Khaimat al Khaleej with live music and a traditional ambience reflecting Bahrain’s Ramadan fervour. Iftar at the tent is priced at BD 22 and Ghabga at BD 20 on weekdays and BD 22 on weekends (subject to taxes). Ladies dine at BD 15 Net per person every Tuesday. n

Date Shops in Bahrain
Think Middle East and one of the first things that spring to mind are dates. The high-fibre, sweet fruits are popular additions to the dining table. More so, during the month of Ramadan.
While it is traditional practice to have dates when you fast, the fruit comes loaded with health benefits such as its stabilising effect on blood sugar levels. The potassium and magnesium in dates help sustain the body during long hours of fasting.
Whether you’re a date lover or are gifting a box to your loved ones, we think some collections are worth checking out. Here are some places in Bahrain you can buy quality dates from this Ramadan.

Creating Culinary Marvels at The Merchant House Bahrain
Executive Chef Nirmal Pant
If you’re exploring the bustling Manama, take a break and walk through the doors of The Merchant House, Bahrain’s first five-star boutique hotel. With an impressive art collection, books curated by The Ultimate Library of Oxford, and a charming vibe within its lively interiors, The Merchant House is a different world in the middle of the ever-busy streets of the island’s capital.
Leading the culinary team at the boutique hotel is Executive Chef Nirmal Pant. He oversees food and beverage offerings, and in-room dining for the hotel’s 46 suites. With nearly 20 years of experience under his belt, Chef Pant is a sustainability champion in the kitchen, known for his imaginative take on fine dining.
With roots in India, Chef Nirmal’s approach to food is inspired by the farmto-table practices of his family. Whether it was using fresh milk, to make cheese, yoghurt, and clarified butter (ghee) from scratch or preparing dishes in a way that retains their organic value, Chef Nirmal brings a wealth of knowledge to the TMH kitchen, informed by his own experiences with food.
“My parents grew vegetables in their house garden. We would prepare seasonal dishes with minimal cooking methods –they were blanched and lightly sauteed to preserve the natural flavours of the produce,” recalls Chef Nirmal. This form of wholesome cooking and sustainable living inspires his seasonal menu at the hotel’s FAB Brunches every Friday and Saturday.
In the run-up to Ramadan, we were keen on finding out more about what’s happening at The Merchant House during the month. “We invite the citizens and residents of Bahrain to experience Ramadan in the hotel’s artistic surroundings. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a special set menu and a High Tea experience that includes Turkish Coffee and a selection of finger foods, featuring some of the month’s most cherished delights,” says Chef Nirmal. During Ramadan Nights, guests will be treated to a six-course meal that offers a variety of dishes such as cold and hot mezze, salads, soup, Australian Lamb Chop, TMH Butter Chicken, Stuffed French Corn-fed Chicken Breast, and Australian Rib Eye. The Merchant House will reflect the spirit of the month with live entertainment to accompany the meal and enhance the Ramadan experience,” he adds.
His concepts such as the “B-lated Breakfast” programme which allows guests to enjoy breakfast options all day and, “Afternoon T” with refreshing tea blends, sandwiches, and pastries have added to the many culinary options available to guests at the hotel.
Recently, The Merchant House launched “ChocoLAB” in partnership with Auro Chocolates to serve a range of chocolate desserts and drinks and promote sustainable farming practices. At ChocoLAB, you will find Chef Nirmal preparing some decadent treats such as fondue, choux pastry, or iced chocolate with organic ingredients – cardamom, mint, and wild orange. P.S. We have tried some of these chocolate delights and they definitely are a must-try
Combining his two popular concepts –ChocoLAB and Afternoon T, the hotel has launched “Chocolate Afternoon T” to give guests the chance to enjoy some of the best chocolate desserts, and pastries, along with tea or chocolate beverages.
Whether you’re heading to the Indigo Terrace for the weekend FAB Brunch for Chef Nirmal’s Mediterranean cuisine and authentic Asian delicacies or to Cafe Gray for homemade cakes, salads, and sandwiches, you can enjoy his creations while admiring the views of a busy Manama. n
Call +973 16671000 or WhatsApp +973 66655118 to book your table at the hotel.

Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated during Ramadan is essential for maintaining overall health and well-being. While fasting, your body relies on stored energy and water to function properly throughout the day. Hydrating during the nonfasting hours maintains a well-balanced health. Water isn’t the only way to give your body the fluid nutrients it needs. Consider these alternatives instead:
Watermelon
Watermelon is 92% water and 8% fruit, containing essential electrolytes such as salt, calcium, and magnesium, which can effectively replenish the body's fluids after a tiring day. To add some flavour, you can combine watermelon cubes with some feta cheese or a refreshing sprig of mint.
Soup
Soup is a common starting dish at an Iftar table. Opt for a clear soup over a creamy one and begin your meal. This will help increase your water intake and improve your energy levels while keeping your body hydrated and well-nourished.
Smoothies
Blend together fruits with high water content such as oranges, watermelon, apples, pineapples, and peaches to make a refreshing smoothie. Skip the yoghurt or milk and add water and ice instead for a hydrating drink that can be made in a large batch and enjoyed during Suhoor.
Avoid Fried Food
We agree it’s a challenge, but avoiding a diet that contains processed and salty foods is crucial as it can cause dehydration and unnecessary strain on the body. A small daily amount of salt is sufficient and can be sourced naturally from vegetables and select fruits. It is best to avoid fried foods like salty fries and burgers, and opt for healthier alternatives such as coconut water, apple slices, or baby carrots.
Lettuce
Iceberg lettuce is mostly water - 96% to be precise. It's a good addition to salads, especially when combined with cucumbers and tomatoes.
Tea
It's simple: tea is made up of 100% water with added herbs for flavour. To fully reap the benefits, it's best to avoid adding sugar. Opt for herbal teas for optimal hydration. n
A Colour Revolution for Coffee Lovers
If you’re looking to add a pop of colour to your coffee corner, check out Nespresso’s new Vertuo Pop. It’s the most compact machine in Nespresso’s Vertuo range and is made for space-savvy coffee lovers! The machine adds a burst of colour to any coffee corner, no matter how big or small. The six new colourways give interior lovers the freedom to personalise and add a style statement to their space, from classic Liquorice Black or Coconut White to vibrant and playful Spicy Red, Mango Yellow, Aqua Mint or Pacific Blue.
Minimalist is the new monumental, and Vertuo Pop is making a big statement by going small - it’s Nespresso’s smallest and lowest-costing Vertuo machine to date. The compact style means the machine can easily fit into any kitchen or workspace - perfect for first homes, office spaces or the university dorm and pantry. The 136 x 426 x 250 mm machine can begin brewing with a single touch and heats up in 30 seconds. It’s equipped with an automatic coffee pod ejection system.

My Favourite Ramadan Recipes
- By Every Little CrumbBahrain is home to some talented food bloggers. So we got in touch with Farah Abu Maiser, the creator of the Every Little Crumb blog and a lover of Middle Eastern food to share some of her star dishes and recipes for Ramadan. She has prepared a full-course menu for you to show off at your Iftar! Give them a go!
@everylittlecrumbDrink - Karak Chai
This Karak Chai is irresistible. It's creamy and rich, with warm spices and just enough sweetness. The secret is in letting the sugar caramelize before adding the rest of the ingredients. I promise, you make this and you'll never need to go to your favourite chai spot again! This is just how I like to end my meal, with a hot cup of chai, and something sweet to nibble on.
Ingredients
4 tablespoons white sugar (50 g)
4 cups of hot water
2 tablespoons loose black tea or 3 tea bags, like Lipton red label or English breakfast
6 pods of whole cardamom
3 whole cloves
A pinch of (5-6) saffron threads
3 slices of whole ginger root, or a pinch of ginger powder (optional)
2/3 cup evaporated milk (170 g)
Instructions
1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the sugar. Let the sugar melt and caramelize without stirring or disturbing it. Once it has turned a golden caramel, slowly stream in the hot water. (If some parts of the sugar clump and harden, don't worry they'll melt as the water boils).
2. Add the tea, cardamom, cloves, saffron, and ginger. Boil for 5-7 minutes or so until the spices are fragrant, then add the evaporated milk.
3. Lower the heat slightly until the tea is at a steady, low simmer. Simmer for 8-10 minutes until the tea thickens slightly.
4. Transfer the tea to a teapot, using a strainer while pouring so you can separate the tea leaves and spices.
5. Enjoy hot! Utter comfort.
Appetiser - Lentil Soup
No one has made this lentil soup without singing its praises. It's so comforting and thick that it can be a meal in and of itself, but it's my favourite way to break my fast! I like adding potato and carrot to the soup base, which is what makes this so creamy.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 yellow onion, finely diced
1-2 carrots, finely diced
1 peeled potato, finely diced
1 cup red lentils
6 cups water
2 chicken or vegetable stock cubes
1 tablespoon dried mint
1 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt, plus any extra to taste
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 heaped tbsp flour
1 1/2 tablespoon butter
Instructions
1. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over mediumhigh heat. Add the diced onion, carrot and potato. Sautee for about five minutes until onions have softened, stirring occasionally.
2. Rinse the lentils well, removing any debris. Add to the saucepan, and saute for three minutes, stirring constantly so they don't stick to the bottom of the pan.
3. Add the six cups of water, the stock cubes, and all the dried herbs plus the salt and pepper. (The dried mint all the way through to black pepper). Let the soup come to a boil, stirring occasionally, then reduce heat to medium and let the mixture cook uncovered for 2530 minutes, or until lentils and vegetables are cooked through.
4. In a separate small skillet, add the butter and let it melt over medium heat, then add the flour, and whisk constantly until the mixture bubbles and thickens slightly. Add this to the lentil soup pot.
5. Once the soup is totally cooked through, use an immersion blender or a normal blender and blend the soup (in batches) to desired consistency. I like it creamy and smooth but with a few chunks of veggies.
6. Serve hot, with a slice of lemon, and green olives on the side.
Main Course - Lebanese Chicken and Rice
This is Hashweh rice - a spiced rice pilaf with ground beef and peas, topped with shredded chicken and lots of toasted nuts. A comfort dish that hits the spot!
Ingredients
For the chicken
1 chicken or 4 chicken breasts or assorted chicken pieces see notes
1 onion, cut into wedges
2 bay leaves
1 cinnamon stick, or a pinch of cinnamon powder
A big pinch each of salt and pepper
For the spiced meat
2 teaspoon olive oil
2 small red onions, diced small
3 cloves garlic, crushed
500 g ground beef or lamb* 1 lb
1 teaspoon all-spice or seven spices
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
1/2-1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper to taste
For the rice
2 cups basmati rice
3.5 cups water or chicken stock from cooking the chicken
200 g frozen peas
A pinch each of salt, pepper, and seven spices/all spices
For the garnish
Toasted pine nuts and slivered almonds
Fresh chopped parsley
Instructions
For the minced meat
1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the diced onions and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened, stirring continuously
2. Add the crushed garlic, and cook for a further minute or so, then add the minced lamb.
3 Cook for a minute, breaking apart any clumps of meat with a wooden spoon, then add all the spices (seven spices or allspice, cinnamon, salt and black pepper). Continue cooking, for a good 6-8 minutes until the lamb is all cooked through and brown with no pink bits remaining. Keep stirring and breaking apart clumps of meat throughout - you can even use a potato masher to break the meat apart a little.
4. If desired, drain any extra fat. Taste the mince and adjust for seasoning.
For the chicken
1. Place the chicken in a large saucepan. Add the onion wedges, bay leaves, cinnamon stick, salt and pepper. Cover with water until chicken is submerged.
2. Bring to a boil, then scoop off any foam that forms on the surface. Boil uncovered for 20 minutes or so until the chicken is cooked through. Turn off the heat, and transfer the chicken to a plate. Keep the stock to use in the rice.
3. Once the chicken has cooled enough to handle, use your fingers to shred the chicken evenly. Set aside.
For the rice
1. Soak the basmati rice for 15-20 minutes, then drain and rinse with water until water runs clear
2. To a large saucepan, add the minced meat (I don't always use all of it, I usually use around 300 grams or so), plus the drained basmati rice, the frozen peas, and 3.5 cups of water. Sprinkle with a big pinch of salt, pepper, and some additional all-spice or seven spices. Stir to combine.
3. Bring the contents of the saucepan to a boil, uncovered, then cover with a tight-fitting lid, reduce heat to a low simmer, and simmer for 20 minutes or until water is all absorbed. Remove pan from heat but let it sit covered for an additional 10 minutes, then uncover and fluff with a fork.
4. Gar nish with toasted pine nuts/almonds and chopped parsley, if desired.
Dessert - Berry trifle
One of the most popular desserts I make - layers of ready-made pound cake, cream, and lots of fresh berries. SO easy and a showstopper!
Ingredients
2 containers thick cream or table cream 8 oz or 250 g each
1 sachet dream whip powder 1.3 oz or 28 g
1 sachet creme caramel, powder only (not syrup) 2 oz or 50 g
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream 120 ml
3 tablespoons milk
7 oz sweetened condensed milk 200 g, 1/2 large can
For assembling
1 pack strawberries, halved 227 g, 8 oz
1 pack raspberries 6 oz, 170 g
1 pack of blueberries 6 oz, 170 g
1 pack of blackberries 6 oz, 170 g
1 Sara Lee vanilla pound cake, thawed 10.75 oz (300 g)
For the garnish
Whole strawberries
Mint leaves (optional)
Instructions
1. In an electric mixer, add the thick cream, dream whip, creme caramel, heavy cream, milk, and condensed milk. Beat until thick and fluffy, with soft peaks, for about 3 minutes or so.
2. Gently rinse the berries and pat dry, and cut the pound cake into large cubes.
3. Layer a trifle dish like so: 1 layer of pound cake cubes, 1/2 the cream, and half the berries (a mix of all the berries). Repeat with the second half of the pound cake cubes and the second half of the cream and top with the remaining berries. Optionally, add whole strawberries and mint leaves to garnish.
4. Let the trifle set for a few hours or over night before enjoying it!

Recognising the Region’s Culinary Scene
MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants
On the evening of 30 January 2023, culinary stars of the restaurant world converged at Conrad, Abu Dhabi for the second edition of the Middle East & North Africa`s 50 Best Restaurants Awards ceremony. 14 cities across the region were represented on the list of 50, including three restaurants from Bahrain. For a region which over the years has gained tremendous prominence as a centre of global gastronomy, the MENA 50 Best puts talented chefs and restaurants in the spotlight.
Bahrain Confidential was invited to attend the awards ceremony and meet the culinary geniuses behind them to find out what makes these establishments stand out. It was a oneof-a-kind experience to watch restaurants in the region get recognised on a platform tied closely to the World 50 Best.
Orfali Bros Bistro was declared the best restaurant in the region. An unlicensed gastronomic bistro and test kitchen located in Dubai, Orfali Bros Bistro was founded in 2021 by three brothers originally from Syria: Mohammad, Wassim and Omar Orfali. The menu features dishes with a core Middle Eastern theme paying homage to the brothers’ Aleppian roots while capturing the multiculturalism of Dubai.
The fine-dining Indian restaurant Trèsind Studio in The Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, headed by chef Himanshu Saini, claimed the second spot on the list; followed by Manama’s Fusions by Tala on No. 3 (also named Bahrain’s Best Restaurant). In 2022, Tala Bashmi, a Bahraini chef was named Middle East & North Africa’s Best Female Chef. Her dining space, Fusions by Tala, in Manama’s iconic fivestar Gulf Hotel Bahrain, marked a record climb of 36 spots since last year, also earning it the Highest Climber Award in 2023.
Two other Bahrain-based restaurants found themselves on the list of 50. CUT by Wolfgang Puck at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay emerged as No. 25. One of eight CUT by Wolfgang Puck restaurants worldwide, the restaurant was a new entry to this year's MENA 50 Best. Philadelphia-born Brian Becher is at the helm of the award-winning restaurant which serves a wide selection of steakhouse classics, from prime dry and wet-aged beef to premium shellfish.

Bahrain Confidential Attends the MENA 50 Best Awards
By Charlie CookseyWhile speaking to one of the Jordanian chefs ahead of the Awards Night, I was reminded that not long ago, the region was not particularly known for its culinary offerings. Over the years, as cuisines from around the world gained popularity, the Gordon Ramsays of the MENA region began to emerge. Perhaps much credit goes to a platform like the MENA 50 Best Restaurants to highlight the region’s culinary scene through a spectacularly organised event.
Over the course of three days, I was able to visit some of the restaurants and speak to the chefs. At the awards ceremony, I cheered with a glint of pride for our Bahrainbased restaurants who shared the stage with big talents from the region. While in the UAE, attending the festivities of the MENA 50 Best, I visited Zuma Dubai, a standout fine-dining spot in the heart of Dubai with a unique take on the traditional Japanese Izakaya style of informal dining. I enjoyed some contemporary Japanese dishes like the sashimi omakase from the sushi counter, a southern rock lobster with Dungeness crab, monkfish liver, oscetra caviar, and tuna belly.
I also stopped by one of my favourite Dubai dining spotsBait Maryam. I’ve witnessed Chef Salam Dakkak’s success as a chef-owner over the years. Her beautiful Levantine restaurant, a dedication to her mother and a reflection of her home, has a rich story behind it. Later, at the awards ceremony, it was heartwarming to see her receive the special Best Female Chef in MENA award.
The 50 Best Talks at the event featured some fascinating stories from industry professionals - their beginnings, their journey, and their success stories. I cannot state enough the importance of a platform like the MENA 50 Best in bringing top talent in the region to the forefront and encouraging more chefs to create, innovate, and be the best at what they do. It will definitely be the cherry on the icing to see some of these restaurants featured in the World 50 Best list this year with the awards ceremony set to take place in Spain.
Discovering The Taste of Africa at Kula
In Bahrain, there’s plenty to explore when it comes to international cuisines. But it’s not every day that we visit a restaurant and come back feeling at one with the culture, traditions, and energy of the land it represents. When we were invited to experience the Taste of Africa at Bahrain’s newest fine dining spot, Kula, we weren’t just trying new cuisine but exploring a whole new world.
“Kula” in Swahili means “eat” and it is the restaurant’s vision to introduce the length and breadth of Africa to the multicultural community in Bahrain through food. The vibe of the restaurant transports you to the continent.
Be it the Mount Kilimanjaro section on its top floor, Great Zimbabwe - its outdoor terrace, the indoor Mabira (named after the largest Ugandan bamboo forest), Mzansi which reflects South Africa, or The Lodge, inspired by safari lodges. Stepping into Kula is like getting a glimpse into the world of Africa, the culture, the energy, and yes, most importantly the food.
We were greeted by some of the friendliest staff we’ve met who beat their drums in a very cheerful manner as we entered the restaurant - an action that repeats every time a diner walks through the door. Not breaking from the overall theme of the restaurant, the staff was dressed in the attires, colours, and patterns of Africa. Each section of the restaurant has a different decor.
We chose the Mzansi section, a colourful dining area representing South Africa. From the staff, the decor, the plates and cups to the presentation of the dishes, you are bound to explore the taste of Africa in every interaction you have at Kula.
Coming to the food - if you haven’t tried African cuisine yet, you’re in for an
adventure that won’t let you down! We must give you a heads up, though, that the portions served at Kula are rather large so it would make sense to visit as a group (or have an extremely large appetite!).
We first tried the African Hand Pies, inspired by the street food found in most parts of the continent. The flaky pastries are slow-cooked with potatoes and vegetables and come with a thyme-infused beef dipping sauce and a curry. From there, it was just one delicious dish after another.
Next, we tried the Nigerian Jollof with Chicken, a spiced rice dish with tomatoes, roasted bell peppers, and fried plantain, served with wood-fired rotisserie chicken. We’ve been waiting to try a Jollof dish for a while and this hit the right mark! The flavourful rice in itself was a treat, but along with the juicy, perfectly charred chicken, and all the accompaniments, it definitely made it to the very top of our list of dishes to try at Kula.
Next came the African Seven Colours - a plate with seven different mouth-watering dishes coming together in a colourful blend. The dish includes a delicious beef stew with roasted potatoes, a sweet and hearty pumpkin cinnamon mash, a healthy pasta salad, yellow rice, chakalaka - which is beans in a thick spicy tomato gravy, and beetroot.
If you aren’t a lover of eggplant, consider Mama Congo Aubergine to initiate you into the versatile flavours of the vegetable. This plate comes with sauteed bell peppers, onions, and baby spinach stuffed in eggplant. We tried it, we loved it! Finally, a big shoutout goes to the mocktail bar where we tried Ruby Bubbles AKA “liquid candy” (we named it so). This special blend of pomegranate, lychee, and rose foam hits you with a refreshing burst of flavour that’s not too sweet and yet, just sweet enough.
A follow-up visit to Kula is bound to happen sooner or later for us, as we crave the Taste of Africa more. Being one of the few dining spots to serve authentic African dishes, well adapted to the multicultural tastes of Bahrain, we’re thrilled to have explored this new fine dining gem on the island! n
Kula is now open at the RUW Corner in Riffa. Call +973 17273337 to reserve a table.

Palazzo Versace Dubai
A Take on Italian Renaissance Luxury
By Charlie CookseyAn offspring of the Italian luxury fashion brand Versace, this Dubai hotel will enchant you with its Neoclassical design that combines subtle traces of Arabic architecture – all with a sense of Versace luxe.
Palazzo Versace Dubai is a luxurious oasis on Dubai Creek just outside the bustling city, where opulence and sophistication blend seamlessly to create a wonderful stay and experience for guests. The hotel's stunning architecture and exquisite interiors are inspired by classic Italian Renaissance palaces, while modern amenities and world-class service ensure the utmost comfort and convenience.
Let me paint the picture. From the moment I stepped into the grand lobby, I was transported to a world of refined luxury. Marble floors, intricately carved
pillars, and a crystal chandelier skirted with a 1.5 million-piece mosaic of Medusa all create a sense of grandeur and elegance, while the warm and welcoming staff make you feel like royalty. Plus, there’s this intoxicating scent, an adaptation of one of Versace's signature fragrances. It wafts through the hotel, adding another layer of indulgence to the experience. I should make an effort to find this fragrance for my home!
The rooms and suites at this luxury hotel in Dubai are spacious and royally designed, with sumptuous Versace linen, king-sized beds, separate living rooms, walk-in showers plus spa baths, and floor-to-ceiling windows or balconies that offer stunning views of the city’s iconic skyline or tranquil Dubai Creek. I had the opportunity to stay in one of the Grand Suites, which offered more space than I could ever need on a combined business and pleasure trip. There was even a delicious Versace welcome cake waiting for me in my room, a nice surprise and warm welcome.
Palazzo Versace Dubai is also home to some of the city's most exquisite dining experiences, from the Italian-inspired cuisine at Vanitas to the seafood delights at Enigma. However, I really enjoyed the evening buffet dinners and extensive breakfasts at the vibrantly-designed Giardino. The staff provided truly impeccable service. Each morning they even remembered how I took my coffee, along with a glass of freshly squeezed OJ.
Of course, as a luxury hotel in Dubai, there’s a plethora of amenities. There’s the boutique spa on the West Wing to indulge in massages, jacuzzi tubs, saunas, and a Moroccan hammam sanctuary. There’s also a fantastic gym, a waterfront outdoor swimming pool, and a beautiful garden with palm trees and fountains.
Then, whether I was returning to the hotel, heading out for meetings or checking out the evening nightlife, there was often a glamorous pianist playing delightful music in the hotel lobby.
This property has all the fine details for a truly excellent hotel, with attention to detail in every aspect from design, service, quality and atmosphere. Easily, this is one of the most luxurious hotels in Dubai. I mean being Versace, how can it not be?!
Palazzo Versace Dubai is a luxurious oasis on Dubai Creek just outside the bustling city.
Dubai is a city enriched with thousands of hotels many of which pack the wow factor. I have stayed and visited many and it can be difficult for hotels to be unique and stand out from the rest.
Palazzo Versace truly does stand out, and I would most define that it stands out with its beautiful classical European design. Something that is missed and not much seen in the Gulf, with most hotels being ultra-modern and futuristic.
The opulent decor and ultra-luxurious sense you feel just walking through the doors kickstart an amazing stay; combined with the amenities and staff, this hotel exceeds all expectations.
With its unparalleled blend of luxury, style, and hospitality, Palazzo Versace Dubai is the perfect hotel in Dubai for anyone seeking a truly inspirational and unforgettable travel experience in one of the world’s greatest cities. n

On the Right Track: A Recap of the Bahrain Grand Prix 2023
Nearly 100,000 people gathered at Sakhir’s Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) earlier in March to witness the Formula One Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix 2023. In its 19-year history, BIC, fondly known as the “Home of Motorsports in the Middle East” broke its own records with a completely sold-out weekend and the highest single-day attendance on race day. An unprecedented turnout of nearly 100,000 spectators bore witness to the high-energy, high-speed racing weekend.
It’s no wonder that the Bahrain Grand Prix is perhaps the biggest event on the Kingdom’s calendar every year. Racing fans from all over the world make their annual trips to the island to witness the opening race of the season, which sets the tone for the yearround racing action. They were the first to witness the new cars, new driver line-ups and the anticipation that the first race of a new season brings.
The atmosphere was festive, with fans getting to see their favourite racing drivers up close, enjoy a huge lineup of roaming live performances, stand in queues to enter a haunted house, and battle it out in teams with race car simulators.
For VIPs with access to the exclusive Paddock Club, there was a chance to walk up and down the pitlane watching the team engineers and technicians practice their pit stops (an interval during the race to change the car’s tyres). The paddock was electric with the who’s-who of Bahrain making their appearance at team garages and wishing their favourite drivers the best for the race.
HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa was seen in his element, driving his buggy around the paddock and engaging with team principals before the race strted.
The 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix gave the Red Bull Racing team a reason to celebrate as Max Verstappen, the reigning two-time world champion grabbed his first victory in Bahrain after starting from the pole position. His teammate, Sergio Perez came second giving the team a much-needed boost after their double early retirements in the 2022 season opener here.
Last year’s Bahrain winner, Charles Leclerc on the other hand was left without any points at the end of the race as engine issues forced him back to the Ferrari garage mid-race. His teammate, Carlos Sainz, who took second place in 2022, managed to finish the race with points but missed out on a chance at the podium. However, the unlikely star of the weekend was Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, driving his first race with the team this year. In his 22nd year as a Formula One driver, the two-time world champion was on everyone’s radar after taking the lead

in the practice sessions and finally fixing his spot on the podium with a third-place finish.
It was in 2004 that the circuit witnessed its first-ever Formula One race where Ferrari emerged as the winner and Michael Schumacher took the victory stand. Since then, not only has the sport evolved to accommodate regulations, faster cars, and intense racing action, but its carnival-like atmosphere has also become a hallmark of the sport itself.
The popularity of Formula One across the world has been growing in recent years, especially with a new generation of fans emerging in the Middle East. With four races on this year’s calendar (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar), F1 is attracting a heavy footfall of tourists and motorsport fans to the region.
Anticipation for the 2024 Formula One Grand Prix in Bahrain has already skyrocketed. Bahrain International Circuit will also be celebrating its 20th anniversary coinciding with the race. With tickets selling out completely this year, it is an exciting time for the island to see what the 2024 season brings with it. n
Racing, Camaraderie, and Beyond
An Interview with Mark Webber
As the Formula One preseason testing got underway before the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, we visited the Porsche Center to meet legendary Australian racing driver, Mark Webber. The nine-time Formula One Grand Prix winner, FIA World Endurance Champion, television personality, and Porsche ambassador reflected on his illustrious career, his passion for Porsche cars, and his take on the 2023 Formula One season while in conversation with Bahrain Confidential.
How do you like being back in Bahrain and how are you spending your time here?
Good memories here in Bahrain. I’ve been coming here for nearly 20 years, first as part of Formula One and then again with the World Endurance Championship. I’m very lucky to receive a car from Porsche here - the Panera GTS is awesome to drive around from the hotel to the track and do a little sightseeing in Bahrain.
You've been in the game for a long time before you retired in 2017. What's the one thing you miss and one thing you don't miss about racing?
I miss the camaraderie that comes with working with a big team. It's always good fun to work towards big goals and trying to achieve success together. I don't miss the diet and the huge amount of travel. I'm still travelling a lot now, but not as much as I probably did when I was racing. It allows me to balance between family and professional life a little more, which is something I'm certainly enjoying.
What do you remember about your race during the first Bahrain
Grand Prix in 2004 and your last one here in 2013?
In 2004, I was driving the Jaguar and I think we had pretty high degradation during the race. We did finish the race, however. My last one here with Red Bull was in 2013 and it was a challenging result for me. Unfortunately, I never made it to the podium here in Bahrain - one of the only tracks where I didn't finish in the top three. Perhaps, in another lifetime, I finally get there. Nevertheless, I always enjoyed coming here, even thought the results weren't overly strong for me at this venue.
Your first World Endurance Championship (WEC) title was set here back in 2015 while driving the Porsche 919. Is there anything you remember about that particular race?
Absolutely, I won't forget that race. It was a very challenging one. We had some issues that we needed to manage with the car. Timo and Brendan, my two teammates and I had to work pretty hard to get that victory. The mechanics did an amazing job during the six-hour race. We kept ourselves in the fight and finished the

race to get the world championship on our terms. It was a hard race and it ended in a nice celebration that night.
What led you to become a driver manager and a TV personality since your retirement?
Landing into TV was funny because I never thought I would when I stopped racing. When I made a small appearance on TV, I quite enjoyed it. Obviously, I work with really good people, so it's fun. I've got other partners in Formula One that I work with on TV as well, so it works out pretty well that I get to do a little bit of media, go to some races, and stay involved in the business.
drastically increases from junior categories where you have a team of probably 15-20 people. In Formula One, you have 80 or 90 people traveling with you. The expectation and just how you operate as a professional is very different.
It was similar in our day as well. The biggest difference is that some of the cars back then were probably more advanced. The competition gap was bigger. Now, they've levelled the field with regulations and manage the cars more in terms of the software and the strategies employed by the teams. The first year of any Formula One driver is perhaps the most important and special - one that every new driver looks forward to.
Which teams do you see rising to the top ranks this Formula One season? And who would be a driver to watch (apart from Oscar, of course)?
Red Bull still is the clear favorite. The team is looking very strong. Ferrari also looks pretty handy. It is going to be interesting to see the upper midfield (third and fourth positions) with Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Alpine getting into a good battle. With young talents coming in this year, of course everyone has their eyes on Oscar (McLaren), but Max (Red Bull) is still someone that we all look at in awe. He’s on top of his driving game and there aren’t many chinks in his armor. He has some phenomenal strengths.
Have you noticed any changes to the audience of Formula One as a sport since the Netflix series began airing?
The management side of things worked out with Oscar (Piastri) rising through the junior categories. He has had tremendous success in the last three or four years and we have been supporting him through his junior career. The support continues as he makes his Formula One season debut this year with McLaren.
What do you think are the challenges to drivers graduating from junior racing categories to F1 today? How was it when you were making your way into F1?
Formula One is always the biggest step. Of course, the travel is a lot more intense. The media, marketing, and commercial side of the sport is very different from the junior categories. Someone moving from there to Formula One has got to get used to a lot while managing their performance. The team size
The way that the sport is positioned out there today has changed massively. There’s no question that a new generation of young viewers are being attracted to the sport. However, never before have we had more females watch the sport, which is a big trend. The digital component with online streaming of the shows and the races has allowed everyone the opportunity to watch and gravitate to some of the racing heroes, no matter who they are. We should be very proud of how a sport can be pushed to different audiences and create an awareness about it. Some of it is a little bit cringeworthy, but it’s an easy way to consume content.
What is your favorite Porsche model and your favorite place to drive it in and why?
I love the GT3 RS four-liter 997. It's a beautiful car, probably my favorite 911 of all time. I enjoyed driving it in the Alps in France. It's always nice to have a mixture of motorway and nice open country roads where you've got some good elevation changes and a great view. n

An Exclusive Interview with Colin Sattar, General Manager of Bentley and Lamborghini Bahrain.
With over two decades in the automotive industry, including nearly 10 years at Porsche Bahrain, Colin Sattar was recently appointed General Manager of the Bentley and Lamborghini dealerships in Bahrain. In his last stint, Porsche Bahrain was recognised as the top dealership in the GCC for its customer service.
We caught up with the automotive veteran to talk about his experiences, his plans for the dealerships and some of his favourite cars.
As the new GM, what are the top priorities on your “to-do list” for Bentley and Lamborghini in Bahrain?
I’m aiming for Bentley and Lamborghini to exceed customers’ expectations. Over the last 10 years that I’ve been in Bahrain, I learned that if one customer isn’t looked after, none are. Word travels fast when someone’s bought a car and soon the next person comes in looking for the same. I believe it’s important to offer great service and not just a great price. A month into my new role, we’ve put together a
roadmap for both dealerships – Bentley and Lamborghini. We’ve got some exciting events coming up so I would urge the readers to stay tuned and come along to engage with the two brands.
You’ve headed Porsche Bahrain for nearly a decade. What have been your biggest highlights in that role and in Bahrain?
My biggest accomplishment over the last decade is growing Porsche’s sales and exceeding customers’ expectations year after year. We always found a way

to outperform ourselves each year and Porsche Bahrain has certainly been the top dealership in the GCC for delivering outstanding customer service. Spending almost a decade in the GCC, had I known I was going to spend all this time here, I’d have probably learned a little more than functional Arabic. However, it hasn’t held me back; being in the multicultural society that is Bahrain, I’ve always found the people and the place to be welcoming.
Both “top luxury” brands are in many ways opposites. How does this influence your marketing and general management of the
Personally, what is your favourite model from the two brands and why?
For Bentley, it’s the Continental GT. When it comes to an everyday drive, it just ticks all the boxes for me – a great family luxury car, similar in style to the Bentayga. For Lamborghini, it’s the Urus. Again, it’s an everyday car I can drive on the track, off the track, and makes for a great weekend drive, when I’m heading out to golf, driving on empty roads with the sea view on either side. I’m spoiled with choices from both the brands – Bentley and Lamborghini.
division? In what ways do the customers of the two brands differ from each other?
Bentley and Lamborghini have separate locations and customers. However, the same customer may drive different cars. The world has changed in the last 10 years and so have customer profiles. Never judge a customer when they come into the showroom. Apart from focusing on new customers, I believe in valuing and nurturing the existing relationship we have with them. In the decade I’ve spent at Porsche, knowing my customers and keeping my doors open were key to a lasting relationship with them. I intend to continue doing this now with the two brands as well.
How do you ensure your team’s growth while building a successful dealership?
I believe in mentoring and coaching to help the staff deliver the best. It’s not about putting pressure on them but expecting certain energy about them when they come into work. The focus is always on having a stable team and successors within the business who are ready to take on management roles. In doing so, we make sure that customers always have familiar faces to assist them over the years and experience good customer service. n
