If there’s a passion common to people, I would say that it’s the love for travel.

Most, if not all, of us have an innate fondness to exploring new places, enjoying new sights, learning new cultures, and trying new things. That’s why this month’s issue of Arabian Woman is special – because it speaks of a topic close to the heart.

Flick through the pages, and we bring you to the fashion capitals of the world – Paris, Milan, London and New York – as we relish the runway shows that presented the Fall/Winter 2013 collections. We also give you tips on what beauty items are essential for travel.

Halle Berry has joined Michael Kors to help fight global hunger. Working together, they aim to raise awareness as well as funds for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The Michael Kors brand recently announced a long-term partnership with WFP to raise millions of dollars to help end hunger.

The first project for the pair will be the launch of two specially designed styles of Michael Kors’ best-selling Runway watch as part of the brand’s WATCH HUNGER STOP campaign. For each watch sold, 100 meals will be provided to hungry children through WFP. Berry and Kors are planning a site visit with WFP in the next year to experience firsthand the work done by the organisation and to highlight the ongoing need to end hunger that exists in countries around the globe.

Central Asian Art Exhibition Where: Alif Art Gallery Date: Till May 22 This is the second Central Asia exhibition at Alif Art Gallery, reinforcing its mission to bring more awareness to Central Asian art and culture.

Rimma Gagloeva was born and raised in a tribal village in the former USSR. Since childhood, she viewed & absorbed a deliberate and sustained rhythm of village life, with its sort of ritual and poetic verse of work and holidays. The beautiful Ossetian mountains and landscapes she grew up with from her childhood remained the main subject matter of her work for a lifetime. They are full of visible energy and power.

Over the past three decades, Gagloeva’s style of landscape painting has undergone fundamental changes. It appeared on her canvas as a reflection of the changes undergone in the relation between man and nature. Nature itself has always been a reflection of harmony and beauty for Gagloeva. For her, the mountains are not just a Grande collection of stones or a unique exotic creation of underground forces, but a native and sincere natural habitat. This is why her work often features small tribal villages tagged in the mountains, and human figures in the fields.

Students’ Exhibition at DIAC The Dubai International Art Centre (DIAC) is hosting an exclusive exhibition of paintings, mixed media and sculptures by a select group of six students from May 1-11.

The exhibition is an annual event where highly imaginative students attending classes at DIAC display their work and win superb prizes. The participants this year are prize winners from the last students’ exhibition and include Alexandra Williams, Rawya Al Malik, Richa Singh, Lieve Hommelen, Tracy Turner and Marie Noujaim.

Ayesha Chen McKeever, Chairwoman, DIAC, said, “All our courses are researched, structured and focused on developing one or more aspects of a student’s skills. We are well aware that each student has different capabilities, needs and expectations and hence blend the fun of imagination with the learning required for advancement.”

Diplomacy of Art – Teresa Emanuele Held as part of BMG Foundation’s Diplomacy of Art initiative, the exhibition

by Teresa Emanuele, QVod Vides, TotVm, opens at the Alaan Art Space in Riyadh.

Emanuele has participated in photography

festivals as far afield as Moscow and held solo exhibitions in Rome and Venice. She has also exhibited at the premier art event worldwide at the Roman pavilion of the 54th Venice Biennale. The second edition of QVod Vides, TotVm (All That Is Seen)

will showcase an exclusive body of elegant and thought provoking work: 19 works of art in total including two kinetic installations and one video work.

Emanuele’s monochromatic images of nature are carefully conceived and painstakingly captured. She is known for marrying sophisticated images and conceptual thought with contemporary media. Emanuele prints on acrylic glass, a material that lends richness to an otherwise flat image by means of the shadows cast by the image itself adding a powerful three dimensional quality to what would otherwise be a traditional photograph.

Emanuele also exhibits her signature kinetic installations known as shadowboxes where the shadows become animated by a simple, delicate mechanism hidden in the frame.

A Journey into Islamic Patterns A new gallery in town

Gallery One has unveiled the prestigious new addition to its rapidly expanding empire. The new 85sqm Gallery One outlet is located in The Avenues at Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai.

As part of the Anantara Art Series, the dedicated Art Space at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa will see two separate and equally indigenous experience,s starting with ‘Journey into Islamic Pattern Design’, a unique workshop experience followed by an exhibition as part of Green Abu Dhabi, showcasing the talent of emerging artist George Lewis.

of Bayt Al Qindeel, which means ‘house of light’ in Arabic, it will bring together three artists from the UK specialising in geometry and Arabesque design, and introduce this classical art form to art enthusiasts in the capital.

The three facilitating artists include Richard Henry, an artist and teacher specialising in Islamic geometric pattern, Adam Williamson, a stone and wood carver, and Lateefa Spiker, an artist specialising in painting.

The gallery will act as a showcase for contemporary, stylish and collectable artwork from a wide variety of artists and photographers, with an array of high-quality and innovative souvenirs and gifts. Key pieces from Gallery One’s Spring collection will comprise the debut exhibition, including works from world-renowned artists Rosha Nutt, well known for her unique pop art style, quirky anonymous photographer Mr Kuu, stylish artworks from Claridge & Lilius, as well as an extended range from Gallery One owner and photographer Gregg Sedgwick.

Walking the Talk...

With the desire to take the concept of physical activity and global travel adventures to a higher level, Emirati social consultant Hala Kazim started Journey through Change. Saadiya Ahmad met with the founder to find out more about her unique program and what makes it work...

The Essence “My passion in life is to help others, and Journey through Change (JTC) is simply a natural expression of what I love to do most. Actually it was both my mother and my father who contributed a great deal to this passion I have as I believe it is vital to be of service and help one’s community since this is the only way societies develop and improve. When I started the program, I was looking for a line of work that complemented the passion I have for helping people. I discovered that the combination of walking/hiking and talking is very therapeutic. I found that this type of therapy helps overcome a lot of obstacles that we find in life. And since I also love to travel and explore new places, the idea of combining both of these developed organically. The program I conduct essentially allows the women to have ‘me time’ away from the daily pressures of life to assist them improve their lives in a very positive way. This is achieved by hiking as well as workshops/ counselling during these trips outside the UAE. We also provide specialised retreats, counselling and energy re-balancing

The Women “I have been doing this as a business for two years while I have been doing it myself for three years with nine trips so far. Most of the women who have come to my group are extremely intellectual and open-minded. When I say openminded, I don’t mean taking off your abaya or sheila but more of an attitude. I have had all age levels of women in the group; from girls in their 20s to women in their 30’s, 40’s, and even 50’s. And this year I am very excited to be having a 62-year-old Emirati woman! I never really thought I could reach out to this age or generation and I am really proud of her for taking the initiative. The women that participate come from all over the UAE and include doctors, teachers, housewives and businesswomen. But overall, we have mostly working women in our group.

Recently, I took a group of 10 Emirati women to the North of Spain to hike the Camino De Santiago route. They walked every day between 18 to 22 kilometres and sometimes 25 kilometres per day.

They covered 110 kilometres in six days.

The women often come with a purpose; sometimes they come specifically to explore or discover themselves or to learn something new or to overcome a problem. Many of my clients approach me through word of mouth via other women who have been on previous JTC hiking trips but I also effectively use other mediums of communication including radio, TV shows, magazine interviews, newspaper articles, Twitter

The Challenges “The challenges I have faced with the group are essentially two-fold; first I have to find exactly the right place and the right country which is safe and not too challenging because as you know, it’s a new idea so I have to really go into looking for just the right area. And the second element is that some people have the challenge of convincing their families.

I don’t want this to sound negative but it is a new idea and needs to be explained.

Therefore I try my best to bring the idea to them in a very clear way because no matter what you try to narrate to them about the trips and despite seeing the photos of the actual experience, the fact is, it’s not the same as actually doing it.

You really don’t know; sometimes it is going to be difficult and sometimes it will be tiring so you just basically have to get the idea out to them first and foremost.

Initially perceptions were an issue I faced when I started the program but now most people understand the need to take some time out for your own well-being.”

“As with all obstacles and challenges, I had to work through them carefully and diligently but my family has been extremely supportive of the program.

Being a woman in the UAE has not held me back in any way. On the contrary, the majority of people and institutions have been most helpful – The Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid establishment has been extremely supportive of JTC and has assisted me in areas since I established

cover story ultimately look at the things differently afterwards. During our trips, my clients are relaxed since they are walking or hiking in pleasant countryside and fields.

The scenery and fresh air are energising and invigorating. In fact, I have found that the concept of ‘walking and talking’ has generally been well received in the UAE. Also, we don’t climb, we hike. I really want to focus on the fact that I am not a walking company or a hiking company but this is a program with daily workshops included with walking which boosts the emotional and psychological aspects of the individual. After we finish walking, we have group sessions and also a discussion group every night where we talk about the challenges we face as women, how to get rid of stress, and many other subjects... and while the group is open to anyone, I mostly have Emirati women. I feel also that one relates automatically with the members of their own community as there are shared similarities in culture and religion. As an Emirati woman, JTC is ideally positioned to communicate effectively with local women on a whole range of topics.”

Planning “My advice for anyone who is keen to start something similar is not to rush and to plan diligently. I personally believe in realistic dreams. You can have any kind of dream but when it boils down to reality, you may actually be in for a rude awakening. The reality is that dreams need proper planning and for me, it took a lot of planning to make this company.

It took me one year before we had a pilot where we just tried it out. The younger

Seeing my clients challenge themselves and go through their own change process. The positive feedback I get from the group is an immensely powerful sense of reinforcement for me. rom teaching Math, Science, Arabic and Religion for eight years, Madiya Bin Hadi found herself following an opportunity that allowed her to fulfill her passion for travel. Back in 1998, then a management trainee programme for Emiratis at Arabian Adventures, 50

marked the beginning of a career that she enjoys now.

Currently holding the post of Operations Manager, Madiya plays a vital role in Arabian Adventures, part of Emirates Airline and the region’s leading destination management company (DMC), providing professional, high quality, destination management

services to the world’s foremost tour operators, incentive houses, meeting organisers, local corporate businesses and cruise lines.

Madiya shares with AW the details of her job, the challenges she faces, and, of course, the perks that come from working in a travelrelated company.

profile Have you always dreamt about landing a career in the travel/ tourism industry? What made you decide to enter this industry?

I enjoyed teaching, but travelling is something I love. I like to see other countries and learn about other cultures – I like to discover other worlds.

What key responsibilities do you hold as an Operations Manager of Arabian Adventures?

Although I am part of the operations team with Arabian Adventures, I actually work with all departments.

Basically I assist in governmentrelated issues, interacting with government officials from DTCM, RTA, Municipality, Dubai Airports, Immigration, etc., all of which have become our partners. Additionally, I am involved in updating our tours and safaris, product development,

handling suppliers, and assisting with the group’s programmes. Managing the operations Reservation Team, I also work with Congress Solutions International team – working with them in handling conferences.

What do you love most about your job? What do you consider as the perks of your job?

What I love most about my job is the exposure to different cultures, and playing a role in promoting and representing my country which I am proud of. Dubai is growing in the tourism industry and becoming one of the top destinations. I am proud to be part of this growth.

Most tourists who come here do not have the opportunity to meet locals – but who better to show them what this place is all about than the locals themselves.

I can’t express how proud I am to be an Arab woman, which would fill pages and pages. I just want to say that there is no other place that I want to be than here.

the fast growth of Dubai and we have to keep up with new developments.

We need to be aware of new regulations or changes in rules. And because I deal with government officials, it is also a challenge when a new official is appointed. This means that I have to establish and build a relationship based on trust and respect all over again. But I have been very fortunate because the people I have met in the course of my work have been supportive and have given me the push to do well. I get my confidence from them.

In my personal opinion, what should be done to get more Emiratis involved in the industry, is to start

from school. In the secondary level, a course or subject on tourism should be introduced so that the Emirati youth can better understand the industry and open their eyes to possibilities of pursuing a career in the industry.

Can you describe to us your typical day?

I wake up early for the morning prayer and then I go for a one-hour run.

I then get ready and go to work. At work there is no typical day. Everyday is a new day with different challenges.

Daily, there are always new issues to be handled in the morning on an urgent basis. The rest of the day is spent on answering emails and attending internal planned meetings.

Since travel is the nature of your industry, what do you love about it, and what do you hate?

I’ve always dreamt of travelling around the world. Now the world is coming to us and this is what I love about my job. There is nothing to hate about it, there are only challenges in the tourism industry which we all face but we simply need to be proactive and deal with it in a better way.

Away from work, what are your other passions and interests?

Every weekend we gather at my mother’s house where all the generations meet to talk, catch up on the week and enjoy a traditional home cooked meal – typically of nakhi which is white chick peas boiled with water and salt, blaleet, which is sweet noodles with egg, and chebab, which is similar to a pancake.

Food is a big part of family life and the whole family is involved in the cooking. I am one of six sisters and we all have four to six children each, some with children of their own, so it is a very large family affair.

If you were to tour friends and families in Dubai, what are your top 5 must-do for them?

For culture, I usually take them to the Creekside and we take the Abra because you can see both sides of Dubai and how it started. The Dubai City Tour offered by Arabian Adventures takes you through the Bastakiya area to the old Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai Museum and then onto the Creek by Abra to the spice and gold souks. This is great for first time visitors as you are accompanied by a guide who gives you interesting facts and information about this wonderful city.

I would also recommend visitors to see the spice and gold souks, visit Burj Khalifa’s ‘At the Top’’ and do High Tea at Burj Al Arab.

Stay fresh Nowadays, travelling is an essential part of life. It can be business trips, vacations on the beach, or discovering different cultures. Frequent flyers should know how to prepare themselves for flights and how to diminish the effects of dehydration, pressure and jetlag. Here are some tips.

What happens to our skin when we fly?

The air-conditioned air in the cabin has no humidity (apparently it’s only 10 to 20 per cent humidity compared to an average of 80 per cent humidity in general). This evaporates any moisture that the skin has due to osmotic pressure. Wearing makeup on the flight can lead to breakouts and clogged pores, so freshen up your skin with a non-alcoholic wipe and moisturise it well before the flight.

Having clean skin is essential and a plane is not the place for make-up.

How to keep your skin healthy?

Hydrate and protect with a deep moisturising serum which contains a high level of actives, followed by a fairly thick moisturiser. Bellefontaine recommends using Silky dew moisture supplement followed by its Multi active essential day cream SPF 15. The moisturising essential treatment line was specially created to keep water in superficial layers of epidermis due to presence Imperata Cylidnrica. Featuring soft glam waves, this look is a natural and effortless style but to create it, having the right products and tools is vital. – Manuel Losada Gomez First of all, I would suggest you use Kerastase Bain Volumactive which will help create volume for your blow dry.

Next use a product to protect the hair from styling – Ciment Thermique from the range of Kerastase texturisers, which is a heat-activated reconstructing milk, would be my personal choice.

Using a round brush that has natural bristles, blowdry the hair completely, starting from the nape and working all the way to the fringe area. Make sure that you smooth the hair out thoroughly to leave it devoid of any frizz which would ruin this sleek look.

4 Next, gently back comb a few sections on the top of the head to create natural volume.

5 Before using the curling tongues, lightly spray the fabulous ‘spray starch 15’ from Redken over the hair. This will protect that hair from the heat of the tongs and also ensure long lasting effects.

6 To create the soft waves, take horizontal sections of hair that are approximately two fingers wide and start curling the entire hair with your curlers.

This is a really feminine and attractive look. To create this style, start by drying the hair so it is smooth. The tools you will need include a tail comb for sectioning, bobby bins and rubber bands. – Marilina Skoulaxinou With a tail comb, separate the hair into a triangle – one side is between the middle of the eyebrows, while the other two sides of the triangle can meet almost in the middle of our crown, about 6 to 7cm from the forehead.

Back comb the hair. The best technique to do this is to choose big horizontal sections, starting from the front. Hold the hair high and tight with the left hand and start back combing with the right hand.

Next, smooth the hair on the top of the head and use band to tie the hair at the top of the triangle.

Before creating the style, the hair has to be dried either by wrap dry or preferably by rollers so we can have a nice natural movement.

Next, divide the hair into three sections by creating one section from the right ear to the parting at the height of the crown and another section from the left ear to the parting at the crown. Be sure to keep these two sections separated.

Doing this will also leave a back section, which is the third section.

At the back section, make a central ponytail. Then put an oval hair sponge just next to the ponytail, either at the right or left side of the ponytail. The size of the sponge you use will depend on the length of your hair. Place bobby pins so that the sponge is as steady next to the ponytail as possible.

Comb the hair from the ponytail, so it is as smooth as possible and using your hands try to cover the sponge with the hair, by placing bobby pins on the other side of the sponge. This is the last step for the back section.

5 Next, take small pieces of hair for the front side area and put bobby pins at the end of the hair piece. Then place the bobby pin inside the sponge so that it is secured, although you can make it as messy as you choose. Repeat this step until all the hair is back to the sponge.

6 To finish, put hair spray on your palm and very softly touch the baby hairs that are loose, but keeping the overall messy feel to the style.

To create this every day look, start by wrap drying the hair and just comb your hair through for added shine.

rench expat in Dubai – Martine, 34 – is a self-admitted tanning junkie. For her, looking good means being a dark shade of brown, whatever the cost.“I have been going to tanning salons since about the age of 17. My mum indulged and so did my two elder sisters; you could say that we were a tanned family! No one ever talked about risks and by then I had already tanned for so many years. I must admit that I do look well past my age. But one of the main reasons I moved here was the yeararound sunshine – I can maintain a nice brown tan all year long!”

The Roots Historically, in the 1800s, an acquired tan was a sign of the labour and lower class, says Dr. Hassan Galadari, Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences in UAE University.“It wasn’t until French designer Coco Chanel sported a tan while vacationing in the French Riviera and then went on to make tanning a global fashion trend,” he says. And these days, getting a tan can be done through sun exposure – the most common method – as well as through tanning booths and UV lamps.“The tanning phenomena is common everywhere and is actually dictated by the media and cultural undertones,” he says. Therefore, the sunkissed look of Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston only further boosts the idea that a sun tan is glamorous and beautiful.

Dying to be dark Celebrities sport tans all year around, spending lazy days at the beach to soak up the sun. The cosmetics industry in the US is jam-packed with fake tanners, quick bronzers and darker foundations, all formulated to give a natural healthy brown tan. But is it really possible to become addicted to tanning? Experts say yes and the term tanorexia, explains Dr. Galadari is a term for tanning addiction, coined in 2005 after researchers found evidence that frequent tanners experienced similar symptoms as smokers and alcoholics.

Individuals appear to have a physical and psychological dependency to sunbathing and the use of tanning beds. A study performed by Fox Chase Cancer Centre examined this phenomena and discovered that 25 per cent of those surveyed reported symptoms of tanning dependence, including symptoms similar to alcohol and drugaddicted individuals. The survey measured items such as tolerance to tanning, withdrawal symptoms and difficulty controlling tanning behaviour in spite of the

knowledge of its negative consequences.

The study investigated the participants’ level of intentional and incidental sun exposure, tanning booth use, and chemical sunless tanner usage as well as other health related habits like smoking and exercise.

Most intriguing is that those found to be dependent on tanning were more likely to be either thin or smokers, suggesting probable links to risk-taking behaviours.

The Dangers Studies have shown a strong correlation between sun tanning and skin cancer.

More and more people are being diagnosed with the disease and Dr. Galadari points out that tanning is, in essence, the skin’s reaction to damage already done, and a defensive attempt to protect itself from further harm. “Such radiation causes a breakdown of DNA in the cells,” he says and repeated damage may lead to mutation and ultimately cancer. The body’s response is to produce melanin to protect it from the effects of such radiation, hence a defence mechanism is not a good thing, he tells.

In addition to skin cancer, Dr. Galadari indicates that the sun can lead to other problems such as burns, allergic reactions and can make some conditions such as psoriasis and eczema even worse. “Tanning beds and sun lamps are highly dangerous as they often produce UVA and penetrates the deepest into the skin surface,” he says and the US has actually banned the use of

tanning beds for minors under the age of 18.

Understanding UV Essentially, two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB, negatively affect the skin by deeply penetrating our skin and potentially damage gene composition. UVA rays Vita Liberata Tinted Gel are the predominant type and tend to cause skin cancer after prolonged periods of time.

Sunburn and the redness associated with sun exposure result from UVB rays, which are also a strong risk factor for skin cancer.

Safety There is no such thing as a healthy tan and Dr. Galadari reiterates that the best way to have a ‘healthy’ glow is to use sunless tanning creams, sprays or lotions.“These materials cause ‘browning’ of the skin and not actually tanning in the molecular sense,” he says, but if you are being exposed to the sun, use a sunscreen.“I think it is important for people to accept who they are and their complexion and not be swayed by the media,” he notes.

Sunblocks and sunscreens: Sunscreens chemically absorb UV rays, sun blocks physically deflect them. New ingredients such as octylcrylene and the benzophenones have improved sunscreen’s defenses against shorter UVA rays, and the revolutionary chemical avobenzone (Parsol 1789) works against all UVA wavelengths.

SPF (sun protection factor): This measures the length of time a product protects against skin reddening from UVB, compared to how long the skin takes to redden without protection. If it takes 20 minutes without protection to begin reddening, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer -- about five hours.

Broad Spectrum Protection: This refers to protection over the full range of UVA and UVB waves. Originally, sunscreens were designed to protect against UVB rays, which cause sunburn but only account for a small portion of the full UV spectrum. UVB rays were once thought to be the only rays that could cause harm. We now know that UVA rays may contribute to premature skin ageing and some forms of skin cancer.

rom fly-away hair to oily skin, being on holiday does not mean you have to forego your beauty routine. According to Ruksher Malik, Partner at Pastels Salon, travelling can be troublesome for the skin. “Being on a plane can cause skin to become dehydrated, and also, other changes in climate can create many challenges,” she says.

“It is just as important to maintain a good skincare regime on vacation as it is at home, and be aware of the fact that you may need to adjust your routine slightly to accommodate temperature changes.”

} Basics There is no need to buy travel specific products, points out Malik. “In fact, with some products, it’s best not to make a sudden swap,” she tells, especially with your trusty cleanser. “This is one item you should stick with no matter where you travel as an abrupt change in cleansers can disrupt skin’s acid balance and cause a vacation breakout.”

Instead, she recommends

that you transfer your daily products into travel-sized bottles for easy travel. Hair can also change when travelling and may become drier or oilier depending on the weather. “Change in climate can unbalance the scalp’s natural defenses so if you notice changes, then use a scalp rebalancing shampoo to counteract these effects,” says Malik. } Hair Tailoring your hair regime to the needs of the hair on holiday/travel is important.

“If you are going on a beach holiday, then a sun protection range would be appropriate, or a moisturising range if the climate you are visiting is cold/dry,” she says. “If you don’t have time to wash your hair and your travel schedule is hectic, then pack a dry shampoo to revive the hair in-between washes as this will absorb oil to extend the life of a blow dry and will instantly refresh any style on the go.”

As I lay on the bed, I recalled the first time I covered myself in the same mud, at the Dead Sea itself, where people were watching and you were basically scooping the mud out of a bucket, alongside other semi-naked bodies. Compared to that, this experience, while a lot less authentic, was a lot more calming, and more importantly, guaranteed the same results.

he brochure read ‘Saray Spa, a haven of calm that transports you to a relaxing realm of quiet luxury. From Arabic rituals and style to modern wellness treatments, Saray Spa is your go-to place for some tranquil peace.’ So, searching for tranquil peace, I booked myself in for a session, specifically, the Saray Signature Dead Sea Journey.

Located on the same floor as the fitness centre of the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, the spa covers quite a big area, with 16 treatment rooms and Couple’s Suites, extensive Hydro facilities, Laconium, Swedish Dry Sauna, Steam Sauna, Circulation Shower, Dead Sea Floatation pool, Jacuzzi and Heated Stone Treatment tables. Despite that, there’s a feeling of nakedness to the place, though I realise that nakedness to me might be some sort of zen minimalism to others. Nevertheless, the setting is tranquil and seeing that that

was exactly what I was after, it seemed promising. Soothing piped-in music, coupled with the mesmerising flow and gentle sound of the centerpiece fountain, immediately puts you at ease and in a relaxed state.

The session for a Saray Signature Dead Sea Journey takes place in the private suite, complete with its own shower. After slipping into those ‘I-can’t-believe-I’m actually-gonna-wear-these’ disposable undies, and then lying on the treatment table, the therapist quickly explains what the session entails.

With no specific requirements on my part, I left my tense body at the mercy of Head Therapist, Mr. Made. He began by scrubbing my body with Dead Sea salt, imported directly from the salt lake of Jordan and Israel. There was no excessive feelings of coarseness, rather a similar sensation to a rough loofah. After getting all salty, I was

The deep tub has lights that changes colour and with the gentle swaying of the water, it feels like you’re neck deep in the Northern Lights. After soaking for about 15 minutes, it was time for the full body massage using nourishing body oil, a choice between Soothing Rose or Stimulating Herbal Citrus.

This is why there is no particular massage protocol for the Saray Signature Dead Sea Journey but rather, the massage is tailored to whatever your body requires. For me, it was the extremely tense back. Working his way from the right lower body and then the left, he progressed to work on my arms and my back, loosening all the tight knots tangled up in there. The pressure was at times a little too hard, but his experience showed as just when I was about to tell him sto stop, he instinctively moved on to a new area. Tough love.

Throughout the massage, your whole body feels relaxed and it is absolutely astounding that he can keep the same consistent pressure for over an hour. With my eyes covered by a towel, all my senses focused on the massage itself. At times almost falling asleep, I knew then that tranquil peace of a bodily kind had indeed been delivered.

Two hours 15 minutes after it began, the session ends, leaving you relieved of tense muscles, a refreshed and rejuvenated outlook, and a body slicked in scented oil.

aryam has been married for two years to Ali but says her marriage has been tough from the onset.

“While we knew each other well before marriage, Ali had been promoted after we got married. Much of his work is now based overseas while I am based in Dubai. He is constantly travelling for long stretches at a time and I can’t accompany him because I am working. Life has become very lonely for me and whenever I broach the subject to him, he gets mad and claims I don’t want to see him progress in his career. Slowly, we have drifting apart to the point that even when he is here now, we rarely have a good conversation. Family and friends have advised me to leave him but I’m just not sure. Maybe he will change...” she rues.

Signs Not alone, Maryam is caught between wanting to stay with her husband in hopes it will all work out and between moving on and starting afresh. According to Dr. Tara Wyne, Clinical Psychologist/ Clinical Director at The LightHouse

Arabia, Community Psychology Clinic, signs of a relationship heading nowhere include high levels of conflict involving toxic interchanges, and high levels of anger with innocuous triggers that flare up into huge battles.“Also, other signs of a problem brewing are when you cannot contain the negativity and lose control and quarrel publicly, a lack of communication, have lost feelings of attachment/ empathy for your partner, a breakdown of physical intimacy, hopelessness, no energy or commitment to repair the relationship, feeling of being devalued by your partner and also very little shared time/activity and incompatible life goals,” she says.

Travel and Distance Despite the adage, ‘travel makes the heart grow fonder’, Dr. Wyne asserts that the backbone of most relationships is companionship and togetherness.

“Distance challenges attachment because we cannot share our day-to-day lives, from the minute to the more significant,” she says, and this forces us to prioritise what we tell one another and simply share the highlights.“We often have to find substitutes in our lives to fill the gap and that can lead to having less space and need for your partner,” she says.“In fact, many people can become very insecure when apart from their partners, they worry more about how valued they are,

how important they are and they often measure the strength of their partner’s feelings by the amount and quality of contact.” Differing expectations regarding amount of contact can lead to a great deal of friction. Business or work travel can often involve meeting and working closely with new people and this, she says, can be a challenge in relationships as it can easily test the trust factor in any partnership.“Distance can be a recipe for marital disaster if the couple have existing problems, an insecure attachment style and distrust,” she says.

Yet if travelling is just a part of the individual’s lifestyle and career, Dr. Wyne has advice,:“Good communication, managing expectations about the amount of contact and keeping our partner a priority in our lives are ways of overcoming distance. We should constantly review how the distance is affecting us as individuals and as an ‘us’.

Don’t be afraid to discuss the negatives and express uncomfortable feelings about the distance, it can be a great relief to know our partner has the same fears and insecurities and can bring us closer.”

Triggers At what point does a woman need to step back and decide if the relationship is right for her? Dr. Wyne suggests that if your inner voice is communicating unhappiness, discontentment, or emotional pain constantly when you are in a relationship, you must not ignore

this.“This voice is your compass which is meant to keep you safe by guiding and steering you towards what you need and away from what is harmful,” she says, as typically women only step back when they feel lonely and dejected and emotionally unsafe in a relationship.

However if she finds herself constantly embattled and dreads interactions with her partner and tries to avoid them, then Dr. Wyne says that this is far too late for action.“By this time a woman will be incredibly hurt and affected and may have stopped functioning normally,” she says.

“Sometimes the breakdown is too deep,

special FEATURE the personalities too incompatible, the damage too wide ranging and there is no desire for repair,” she explains and in order to heal relationships, both parties have to be willing to commit to an often demanding process of exploring the problems, developing a shared understanding of the relationship pathology, making a commitment to changing oneself and the relationship interactions. Partners have to be willing to experience uncertainty and loss of normality and develop accountability to each other to have a hope of repairing their relationship.“In my experience working with couples, it feels very unsafe to try to heal a relationship by yourself,” she says as partners can find negotiating their issues impossible without conflict which ends up doing more harm.“I believe couples counselling or marital therapy is often the safest route to repair,” she says.

Children Many couples reconsider ending their relationship because they want their children to get through a tough developmental stage or they believe a broken home will jeopardise their future, says Dr. Wyne.“Some couples remain resolute that if they remain unhappily together, that it will inevitably overspill onto their children because they will be modelled unhealthy patterns of relating messages

that a poor relationship and distress is acceptable,” she says, yet clearly with children, adults have a more complex process to experience because the variables to be considered in their decision become more numerous and the parents have to weigh up the importance of their personal happiness versus the stability and potential vulnerability of their children.

Closure The main way to get closure is to give yourself time to process the ending, what it means, and to allow yourself to grieve the relationship even if it ended badly, because there were still good times and hopes of a committed life which have to be grieved.“I think that a woman has to explore and establish what role she played in the demise of the relationship; she has to process her emotions, ranging from sadness, disappointment, to anger and self-loathing,” says Dr. Wyne, and she has to learn how to accept her role and forgive herself in order to truly move on.“We invest a great deal of ourselves in relationships and we can feel intense loss and a sense of waste. It is important to try to acknowledge both the good and the bad we took from the relationship,” she says, and in order to get closure, we have to integrate this failed relationship into our life story, but not let ourselves get stuck there.

How to survive business travel Being constantly up in the air for business can be gruelling. To avoid feeling grumpy over the perils of travel, here are some general tips we found to help you smoothly handle business on the road…

1. If you travel often, always keep a bag semi-packed with travel-sized toiletries and work basics (like chargers, notepads and pens) to keep pre-travel preparation to a minimum.

Also, keep an envelope in your bag for all of your travel receipts.

2. Speaking of packing, always keep it to a minimum. The fewer bags you have, the easier your trip will be. If you can keep it to carry-ons (and avoid the risk of a checked bag mysteriously not making it to your destination), all the better. And, do

not forget the golden rule: roll your clothes instead of folding.

3. For clothing, pick simple, matching business basics (like a matching blazer and slacks) that you can wear multiple times. If possible, take dark clothing that is versatile.

But remember to bring something comfortable for you to use on a casual day or night out.

4. Check in online, whether through a computer or a phone app. You’ll skip the long check-in lines, which means you can spend more time getting

business done.

5. Get your Internet access in order before you go. If you’re hoping to get any business done, you’re probably going to need the Internet. Check with your hotel or conference center to make sure WiFi is available and verify the cost. You may also want to rent a portable WiFi device.

6. Fly direct. If your company is paying your way, they might pick a flight with three layovers in order to cut costs, but long transit times can wreak havoc on your productivity.

See if you can get a direct flight to save time, even if you have to front the difference.

7. Get yourself into your airline’s lounge at the airport, even if you have to pay a day fee. You’ll gain access to Internet, refreshments, and most importantly, peace and quiet to get work done.

8. Order room service or takeout from a local restaurant to eat in your room.

You’ll save the hour or so it takes to dine out, leaving more time to catch up on projects or prepare for the next day’s meetings.

9. Use travel as an opportunity to grow your network, whether you’re making high-level contacts at a conference or making small talk about your business with neighbours in the screening line.

10. Sign up for frequent flier and other travel programs so you can turn your business trips into rewards later on.

11. Drink lots of water while flying and throughout your business trip.

12. If you can, take a short break from work to see a site or two while you’re at your destination.

Away from the roads, 69 per cent of parents consider accidents related to children falling from heights such as balconies as a high cause of concern. Burns, electric hazards and cuts due to household accidents came second with 60 per cent of respondents.

Incidentally not all vaccinations are given by injection. Vaccinations against the most common cause of vomiting and diarrhoea are given by mouth.

However, the course of 3 shots of 6 vaccines in 1 injection-hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, haemophilus influenza and polio-given in the first 6 months is very important. Diphtheria and polio which can kill or maim have been eradicated from most of the world, but if there is a let up in vaccination they will return. Haemophilus influenza can cause severe respiratory illness in children and even meningitis. Serious side effects are rare-most commonly mild fever soon after although fever and occasional rash may occur about a week after MMR (Measles, mumps & rubella) vaccination.

There are few contraindications to giving the vaccines. A vaccination can be postponed if the child has an acute illness with fever. If there is a rare serious reaction to 1 vaccine the same vaccine should not be repeated. Severe immunologically depressed children should not be given live vaccines.

When talking specifically about travel vaccinations, the good news about is that there is very little mandatory vaccination. Yellow fever is needed for parts of South America, Africa and Asia. Hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for many countries – hepatitis A, two weeks, and typhoid, 10 days, before travel and the protection lasts for 10 years and 1 year respectively.

Travellers would also be advised that they should check that they have been vaccinated against diphtheria ,tetanus and polio. If not sure a booster for these can be given as a single jab. Meningococcal ACWY vaccine should be given to pilgrims performing Hajj in KSA.

An Intimate Indulgence

Here’s the recount of a remarkable weekend spent at The Cove Rotana Resort in Ras Al Khaimah

quick breather from the city hustle led us driving to the Northern Emirates, and settled in a breathtaking spot at the heart of Ras Al Khaimah. What we found was a divine oasis of enchanting architectural landscape, scenic inlet of stunning turquoise water and, surprisingly, an irresistible food affair at The Cove Rotana Resort, Ras Al Khaimah.

Getting there was a breeze as the Emirates Road, now better known as Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, was unknowingly an easy drive of about 45 minutes from Dubai.

Yet, we took twice to turn into the driveway of the resort as it was a bit confusing for first-timers like us. But the minimal hurdle was put aside as we entered the resort, greeted with friendly smiles by the valet and a warm welcome at the reception.

The resort’s basics After the initial check-in, we were ushered into the buggy, with the driver also helping us understand the basics of the resort while we marvelled at the idyllic Mediterranean beauty as we drove down to our designated one-bedroom villa.

The Cove Rotana Resort is a massive charming property, constructed on an elevation, which leaves no restraints of the panoramic vision. The villas are uniquely built in the middle of the water lagoons, promising guests with intimate vision of nature and extreme moments of privacy.

We were told that guests at the Resort can choose from a wide variety of Food & Beverage venues, from the lobby lounge – Breeze, Breakers beach bar, and the relaxing Lugana Bay and Sunset poolside bars, to the casual and lively Cinnamon, the all day dining restaurant, and Basilico, where skilled chefs serve up an array of many traditional and modern dishes from all over the Mediterranean with an Italian emphasis.

It was also mentioned that the resort has the signature Rotana hotels’ Bodylines leisure and fitness club that includes a fully equipped gymnasium with advanced resistance training and cardio equipment, Jacuzzi, steam and sauna rooms, and seven exquisitely designed massage rooms. The accommodation Upon reaching the villa, we knew we found our home amidst the marvellous views of the Resort as well as of the Arabian Gulf and hajjars in Northern Emirates that are visible from the villa’s private balconies. The homey atmosphere was filled with Arabian splendour in the design touches yet still distinct with modern amenities such as multi channel TV, tea & coffee making facilities, IDD telephone, mini-bar and personal in-room safe box.

The massive two-storey one-bedroom villa would be perfect for families or group of friends, but was also a fitting haven for couples or singles that look for intimacy, comfort and exclusivity all at the same time. With 204 hotel rooms and 79 one, two and three bedroom villas, the resort can accommodate, individuals, couples, or groups, and special considerations, such as double rooms with queen beds, cater to families.

The verdict Normally, when we do weekend getaways, we would be staying inside the room, and relishing an active introvert lifestyle – watching movies, lounging by the terrace, sleeping and bathing for long hours. But at The Cove Rotana Resort, we found ourselves doing all that we usually do on weekend breaks but with lots of pluses. We went around the resort, walking in its wonderfully Mediterraneanstyled outskirts, enjoying the scenery, posing for pictures we gladly posted on Instagram and Facebook, and staying for long hours by the beach.

And, of course, we would not forget the experience of First Gourmet Club we had at Basilico. It was both a sinful and divine encounter with food where the chefs certainly deserved the accolades the guests provided them at the end of the three-hour dinner. Yet again, the Friday Brunch at Cinnamon was also a delectable feast offering a multitude of international dishes. We could not stop hovering over from the sushi section to the ice cream corner. The brunch activity for kids was also a perfect come-on for families who wanted their children try a different way of eating at brunch.

After spending the weekend at The Cove Rotana Resort, we now know why it’s always fully booked no matter the time of year. The resort has what it takes to charm its guests, may it be with their amazing pool of service staff, delectable food selections, beautiful and massive rooms and villas, or simply with its splendid Mediterranean allure that captures eyes (and hearts) in an instant.

In a land where the obsession to be the best in everything has become a sort of national sport, it was only a matter of time before Dubai adds another title holder. Cue the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, the world’s tallest hotel.

nywhere else in the world and the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai would almost certainly dominate the skyline.

At 355m from ground level to the top of its mast, the hotel is a mere 26m shorter than the Empire State Building in New York. Unfortunately, the world’s tallest building looms in the background and inevitably, takes all the plaudits and attention. Nevertheless, with its twin towers overlooking Dubai’s main artery, the Sheikh Zayed Road, the hotel still looks pretty majestic.

Located near the Business Bay, the hotel is 20 minutes from the Dubai International Airport. However, with the area still littered with construction work, getting to the hotel isn’t a very pretty sight.

Step into the lobby though and you quickly forget about the not-too-pleasing neighbourhood. A high-ceilinged lobby offers a sense of welcoming space, which

is a good thing as the hotel lobby seems to be always abuzz with people. This is perhaps due to the fact that the hotel prides itself as Dubai’s first world-class convention and business destination hotel.

Whatever the claim, there’s no denying the constant comings and goings of people, mostly in business suits.

By the looks of it The JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai is made up primarily of of two identical towers, Tower A and Tower B. Only Tower A is in operation at this point in time, with Tower B planned for full opening in 2014. Despite only having one tower opened, the hotel is already employing 1100 associates. That’s a big team, but that means that every small detail would not go unnoticed. More importantly, with the associates coming from 65 different countries, chances are, someone from the hotel will be able to speak your local language, a feeling of assurance that would

be much appreciated by the globe-trotting community.

If you feel like you need a rest before you traverse through the maze of walkways around the hotel, The Lounge is the perfect place for you. With comfortable seating areas, you can delight in drinks and light snacks that are offered throughout the day, while in the afternoon, traditional or Arabic tea are served. But the highlight of this lounge must be the 1326 rainbow-coloured bottles stacked eye-catchingly up to the ceiling.

The first six floors of the hotel are dedicated to its top-notch amenities, restaurants, a spa and other standard facilities that one would expect from a 5-star establishment, including the huge main ballroom, which can host more than 1000 people. On the flipside, you find the pool relatively small. Only the surrounding tanning decks, drinks station and poolside cafe jack up the opulence factor of the slightly underwhelming pool. Meanwhile, the gym is of considerable size. Not only is it well spaced out, ensuring that sweaty people don’t get in each other’s faces, but it’s also equipped with some of the best equipment around, all powered by Technogym. Further plus points include free earphones – to make your workouts a little more enjoyable –, the well laid out changing rooms and the fact that it’s open round the clock. The view though, leaves much to be desired; it faces a depressing empty outdoor space in the foreground and the creek’s edge at the back.

Going up…

The rooms start from the 7th floor upwards, with each floor only housing 14 rooms, a number purposely kept low to ensure a feeling of exclusivity. The rooms are further separated into two pathways, with a suite

hotel Review at each end. The dividing space between the pathways is where the service elevator is located. This ensures the ethos to keep guests’ disturbances to a minimum.

The suites, complete with a living room and a bedroom, can be connected to the twin or deluxe standard rooms if extra space is required. Some of the more outstanding common features of all rooms include the lush bathtub as well as the handheld control panel. Many of the rooms do have balconies but unfortunately, in accordance to the laws stipulated by the Dubai Municipality, all the balconies have to be locked. The lack of access is a shame, since some of the balconies offer spectacular sweeping views.

Do note that there are two sets of elevators, one which goes from ground to the 35th floor and then another which bypasses the lower floors and goes from ground straight to the 36th floor and above. This can cause a little delay in your plans if you’re not vigilant, a trait displayed by many visitors who inadvertently take the wrong elevators.

If anyone is up for some exploration around Dubai, the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai offers shuttle services to Dubai Mall.

This is crucial given the inaccessibility of the hotel at this given time. But if you’re too lazy to get out of the hotel, there’s a planned entertainment space that should be up and running soon. At the moment the only shop there is W.H Smith. Sadly though, there are no ATMs nearby so make sure you have plenty of cash before you reach the hotel.

Culinary wonderland And what would a 5-star hotel be without the 5-star restaurants to complement it?

At the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, you can have your pick of about 12 quality eateries, from casual lounges to full-on Asian and Western cuisines, your tummy will not have a chance to complain.

Prime 68, at the highest floor of the hotel, is a boutique steakhouse, offering a selection of Australian Blackmore Fullblood Wagyu Beef, US Creekstone Farms Natural Premium Black Angus Beef and Aberdeen Angus, prepared on a charcoal grill and served with expertly crafted sauces.

Complementing the food is the absolutely breathtaking view.

Feel like having some Indian food? Head down to Rang Mahal by Atul Kochhar, the first ever Indian chef to be awarded a Michelin star. If that’s not enough of an

excuse to try it, we don’t know what is.

If you crave seafood, then Izakaya is your go-to place. A truly authentic sushi bar with teppanyaki counters, the restaurant also offers two traditionally styled private dining areas complete with the floor-seated arrangements. Just to further reiterate the quality of the Japanese cuisine, the head chef has the license to serve blowfish. While the potentially deadly dish is not served at the restaurant, the chef’s credentials certainly up the prestige of the restaurant.

And then there’s Tong Thai. Where do we begin? Right from the entrance, to the main eating hall, you can feel yourself transported to a different place; red mood lighting, giant bells, big pillars, hand-made ceiling lamps, etc. As for the food, while many other establishments do offer standard Thai cuisine, what separates Tong Thai is its truly authentic food and service (all the staff are from Thailand) and the offerings of lesser known Thai delicacies. Take for instance the steamed tapioca chicken dumplings, a dish which apparently takes a lot of skill to produce, which makes sense given that it was once served only exclusively to the royal family. Or the slow-dried beef for that matter. Even the beverages are local fare,

with one particular one jumping to mind: a wake-me-up concoction created from a mixture of sweet juices with slices of chillies.

And to round your dinner off, you can have a choice of Thai desserts like sago with jackfruit slices or three-flavoured ice-creams on a bed of sticky rice.

For your morning nutrition, Kitchen 6 beckons. Featuring six Live Cooking stations, thus the name, this is an international buffet and a la carte restaurant featuring Asian woks, Middle Eastern Grills, European Breads and Indian Tandoors glowing through glass walls.

After all’s been said and done, what do we think of the hotel? Well, what it lacks in charm, the hotel certainly makes up for it with new age swankiness. The JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai, a mouthful to say, but also a mouth-watering experience.

PH tourism registers visitor growth from the Middle East Tourist traffic to the Philippines from the Middle East continues to show steady growth as visitor arrivals for the first three months of the year totaled 16,423 for a 22.10 per cent increase over the previous year’s figures during the same period. KSA remains the largest Middle Eastern visitor market, followed by the UAE. Both markets registered positive gains at 37.56 per cent and 15.91 per cent, respectively.

During the first quarter of 2013, average occupancy in Jumeirah’s portfolio of hotels has increased by 9 per cent globally, compared to the same period in 2012. In the same period the average daily rate rose by 9 er cent and the revenue per available room, an industry standard for measuring performance, rose by 22 per cent. The performance data is based on hotels that had more than 18 months of operations.

The top five source markets for Jumeirah’s properties in the UAE continue to be Russia, the United Kingdom, the GCC, Germany and the US. For Jumeirah’s six properties in Europe, including London, Frankfurt, Mallorca and Rome, the top five markets were the UK, UAE, the US, Germany and KSA; while the Asian hotels in China and the Maldives enjoyed strong flows of business from

New Madinat Jumeirah Hotel Starts over the Summer In November 2012, approval was given for the construction of a fourth hotel within the Madinat Jumeirah resort in Dubai, complementing the existing properties – Mina A’ Salam, Al Qasr and Dar Al Masyaf. It has now been confirmed that preparatory works on the site of the new 430-room hotel, which sits between Mina A’ Salam and the Wild Wadi Waterpark, will start during the summer of 2013 and that construction is expected to complete by the end of 2015.

The Choose Wisely campaign will be implemented into five Hyatt-branded hotels in the UAE, including Park Hyatt Dubai, Grand Hyatt Dubai, Hyatt Regency Dubai, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, and Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi. The hotels’ restaurants will create special sustainable fish dishes using sustainable-listed local fish as defined by the Choose Wisely consumer guide.

Studies conducted by the EWS –WWF have shown that overfishing is a significant

problem in the UAE, and the overall number of commercial fish in the country has declined by 80 per cent in the last 30 years. In the UAE, 60 per cent of the total catch is made up of species that are fished beyond sustainable levels, and eight of the most valuable commercial fish are being overexploited including Shaari, Farsh and Kanaad.

Hamour, otherwise known as Orange-spotted Grouper, is fished at over seven times the sustainable level and is the most overfished species in the country.

Throughout 2013, Hyatt hotels in the UAE will also be supporting the efforts of EWSWWF by encouraging wider education to school children as part of workshops and training venues, as well as introducing hotel guests and Hyatt Gold Passport members to the Choose Wisely campaign and the overall education and conservation projects by EWSWWF.

ore than an hour’s drive along Emirates Road during rush hour on a Thursday night would have been a nightmare. Thanks to Gourmet Club Dinner, the troubles of heavy traffic to Ras Al Khaimah disappeared into thin air.

winter truffle, which we found quite difficult to dive our forks into as it’s too beautiful to be eaten. The next course, ravioli filled with oxtail and spinach, was not really a favourite but the palette refresher cinnamon and ginger scented lime sorbet was among our top three must-tastes.

The moment we were greeted by the friendly staff of Basilico – the pride of The Cove Rotana Resort where skilled chefs serve up an array of many traditional and modern dishes from all over the Mediterranean with an Italian emphasis – and ushered us into our seats, we felt the warm assurance that we’re up for a lovely night. And when, after tasting our welcome drinks, the host initiated the start of the dinner while a number of attentive and well-informed staff served the first course, we knew our night would be far from lovely – it would be exceptional.

Moving onto the main courses, we started with monk fish wrapped in veal bacon served with pumpkin puree and spinach essence. Then, the delight of appetising cocoa and black pepper crusted wagyu rump, offered with tasty bites of baby carrots and purple chateau potato. Cooked to perfection, the wagyu was one of the best we’ve ever had. As if the feast could not get better, we got to finish off the heavenly dinner with the exquisite blue cheese soufflé paired with balsamic strawberries and nut spring rolls.

The wondrous banquet began with a plateful of various scallops, with sun dried tomato and avocado on the side.

While our eyes feasted on the foods that were beautifully decorated, our taste buds received a mouthwatering kickoff, allowing us to excitedly anticipate the courses that follow. And indeed, the next ones did not disappoint.

Beetroot lovers we are not, yet the smoked venison carpaccio had been a delectable interpretation, making us appreciate its flavour. After a while, we got to savour the caramelised mango served with pan-fried foie gras and black

Fully sated and overly satisfied, we found a divine interaction with food at the Basilico’s Gourmet Club Dinner at The Cove Rotana Resort.
