supervising-editor@azherinfo.ae

It is the time of the year when we come back to traditions – and scorching heat. Yet as it appears, Ramadan in Summer is not the best of combinations, AW has tried to pull out our creativity and our resources in order to come up with a consistent and theme-appropriate content for your reading pleasure. As you are aware, this combined issue of July and August is mainly an ode to the Summer fun. That’s why we bring you a host of packages from our favourite hotels and outlets. We’d say the luxurious offer from Burj Al Arab is tempting, very tempting, for a UAE resident.

Also, something you should not miss in this issue is the fashion shoot we again had with the amazing photographer Jef Anog. His sharp skills and eye for beauty helped us deliver fthe abulous haute couture section. Meanwhile, you should also pay attention to our events pages, fashion news, calendar listing, artsy facts and movie buzz as we dish a dose of info on the latest and the who’s who. Our Ramadan supplement, on one hand, is a beautiful collection of relevant features, iftar offers and gift ideas that are perfect for the occasion. Since this is the time to celebrate with family and friends the longlived traditions as well as to reflect and put a check on spirituality, our well-written articles on working Muslim women and the common mistakes during Ramadan are indeed mustreads. Last but not least, on our cover, you’d find an image from the Ramadan collection by Al-Ain based label Keswah. It stood out as it depicts the essence of being a Muslim woman during this Holy Month, and at the same time also defines the fashion trends that this hot season is buzzing with. Summer fashion meets Ramadan tradition – that is what our cover conveys, and that is what this special issue is all about. Ramadan Kareem!

The film attempts to understand a catastrophic loss that was deemed a sure victory and explores through the darkness of disgrace Singh’s redemption and catharsis that came when he confronted his past. This iridescent tale winds through the plagues of a bloody civil war where Singh’s family were brutally killed during the violent and tumultuous India-Pakistan Partition era resulting in a lost childhood, homelessness, to a life of petty crime and victories hard won and easily lost. The young Singh builds his character by enlisting in the Indian Army, and through his teacher, learns some of life’s most precious lessons, that being to build his human spirit with perseverance, hard work and discipline. Art of the month

VICTIMS OF WAR is a showcase of selected photographic artworks by Australian TV News Anchor in the Middle East, Hermoine Macura, who has spent over a decade covering the Arab world both in front and behind the camera. Some of the images captured document refugees and their tales of hardship, sorrow, torture and some persecution. She explains, “The brutal reality of the civil war in Syria continues to affect not only those trapped in the conflict but also the thousands of refugees now housed in makeshift camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The Arab diaspora and the international community continue to watch in horror as crimes against humanity unfold every day. This was one of my hardest projects in the Middle East.”

Introducing: Abdullaziz Bin Ali His muse and meditative element is Mother Nature and has been so since childhood. Deeply penetrated in the landscape of photography, Emirati photographer Abdullaziz Bin Ali would not hesitate to perpetually be in a state of wanderlust. After dabbling in several fields, his heart was set on photography and all he wished to do was dive deeper, in order to explore the hidden world through his lenses. From capturing the indescribable perfection of the morning dew, radiant sunrise, mystical sunset and much more of the natural environment, he captures some of the most stunning and picturesque images of the world he lives in and presents the same with his signature. The charms of the natural world lies at the core of his photography and his works have been exhibited and appreciated across Singapore, New Zealand, USA, Japan, Germany, Italy and France. “I spent days, sometimes months in difficult terrains to click nature at her most amazing essence. I really work hard to capture images in areas where mountaineers know the difficulty of reaching such a location. My love for nature is immense and I work with unique angles to capture the subject.”

24

According to the UNHCR, up to 5 million people have been displaced since the conflict began in Syria with a sharp increase in 2013 as former safe havens become affected by military operations. The VICTIMS OF WAR exhibition aims to provide visitors with information and images that reflect the reality of what really happens to people caught in the conflict, while also raising awareness about the horrors of war. Macura explains why her work features mostly children and the elderly. “The most vulnerable groups in war zones and civil conflicts are women, the elderly and children – they often suffer the most.”

Where Colour Inspires both Fashion And Art

Full Spectrum is a showcase of the collaboration of the works of Hong Kong-based handbag designer, Piecco Pang and New Yorkbased painter, Antoinette Wysocki. Pang first met Wysocki at her Art opening in Hong Kong and a strong creative connection was formed. Deciding to hone in on their love for fashion, function and art, they agreed to collaborate their visions of colliding art and fashion creating limited edition handbags, designed by Pang, that feature abstract paintings created by Wysocki. ‘Full Spectrum’ is a brilliant platform that debuts the collaboration between the two artists who come together to show their art and to create ready to wear art pieces in the form of evening clutches, which are one of kind pieces just like the painting they were birthed from. From the Article of the “Financial Times” (May 10, 2013) ‘Does Art really sell product?’ from Vanessa Friedman, the collaboration between Pang and Wysocki is given as an example, where there are many famous collaborations between Luxury Firms and Artists such as the corporate Vuitton / Yayoi Kusama collaboration. Art has even inspired Art fashion: Yves Saint Laurent had that Mondrian Collection, Elsa Schiaparelli worked with Salvador Dali… Everybody remembers the Vuitton/ Takashi Murakami collaboration. This collaboration recently ran at Pro Art Gallery, in Dubai.

‘Down the rabbit hole’ In Amina Benbouchta’s work, a necessary distance exists with reality, a distance that leaves free field to the imagination and poetry. This distance is that which the Moroccan artist gets hold in her series of photographs ‘Down the rabbit hole’, which transports to her pictorial universe where we can find traps, lamp screens, beds, black hearts, animals and mirrors that form part of the personal iconography, also present in her paintings, of the Moroccan artist. This exhibition is included in the program of PhotoEspana2013.

Tiffany toasts the

Jazz Age

Named after New York’s legendary Ziegfeld Theatre, a model of Art Deco architecture that opened in 1927, the jewellery Ziegfeld Collection captures the period’s cool elegance with freshwater cultured pearls, black onyx and sterling silver. Ropes of luxurious pearls were signature of 1920s fashion. Tiffany emulates it with an elongated tassel necklace and drop earrings of luminous pearls that move with the ease of a white satin gown. A sterling silver pendant features a daisy motif, centered with cushion-cut black onyx, and is suspended from a chain accented with black onyx beads and pearls. More of these perfectly matched gems circle black onyx in a generously contoured ring. In addition, Tiffany creates a heart-shaped locket of sterling silver embellished with a daisy, a romantic symbol of the period.

Seems like fashion print brands are finding their ways to expanding in hospitality. The recent opening of Vogue Café at The Dubai Mall was a sensational hit. Now, another Conde Nast Restaurant is confirmed to be receiving guests at its home in JW Marriott Marquis in October 2013. Excited much? Set across two floors, GQ Bar will offer lunch and dinner, serving contemporary cuisine of the finest quality, with the menu created by Condé Nast International Restaurants’ Chef and Deputy Director, Gary Robinson. GQ Bar Dubai will be the third international outlet for the brand after Moscow and Istanbul. Condé Nast International Restaurants also license VOGUE Café and TATLER Club in Moscow, and will soon launch VOGUE Club Bangkok and VOGUE Club in Singapore.

Hot on Haute This just in: haute couture sizzled this summer in Paris. Always the time to celebrate the ingenuity of top fashion houses, the critical eyes of aficionados had recently seen the magnificent collections for Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013-2014. Filled with stunning frocks, heart-stopping shows and celebrity attendances, the runway in the city of lights was certainly under the fashion radar all over the world. Here, AW brings you the highlights of this vogue summer affair.

Chanel A splashing of iconic Chanel tweeds was witnessed inside the dilapidated theatre that became the venue for the latest masterpiece collection of Karl Lagerfeld. With his previous hints of focus on India, China and Russia as inspirations, this Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013-2014 collection was his ode to Arabia, according to fashion journalist Max Sortino. The classic signature of the fashion house was felt around the whole collection, with offering of precious and sophisticated pieces in tulle, chiffon, embroidered flowers, sequins and bead in mosaic patterns towards the end. Rihanna and Kristen Stewart were just a couple of A-listers spotted in another legendary Chanel fashion show.

Atelier Versace Noemi Campbell’s comeback on the catwalk may have been the talk-of-the-town when in reference to the Atelier Versace show, yet still the fashion focused on cuts, draping, deep necklines and exposed shoulders were what delighted the amused crowd. Marked with the Versace stamp, the collection was alive with feminine sensuality and swaggering confidence. Colours were in the lines of ruby red, emerald green, deep blue, black, sapphire blue, purple and gray. 42

RUNWAY

Christian Dior Indeed, Christian Dior had moved on from the drama that unfolded years ago when John Galliano was still the master of the house. Now in Raf Simons’ creative hands, the atelier saw innovative cuts and playfulness in its selections but still firmly rooted in the house’s signature couture DNA. This time around, the floor-length ball gowns dazzled in black, red, green, light blue and pink, even.

Elie Saab Once again, we’ve fallen in love with Elie Saab. His creations – definitely thinking of the Middle Eastern women’s love for embellishments and precious fabrics – were totally evoking sophistication, elegance and femininity altogether. Proud of his Arab roots, the Lebanese designer presented long mermaid and column evening gowns in rich stone colours such as ruby, emerald and sapphire and covered them with precious Swarovski crystals, strass, matching crystals and tinted quartz.

Armani Prive Haute couture is a collection that is supposed to make clients dream. In this collection of Armani Prive, it was totally spot on in realising this goal. The collection was perfect beyond any critique: one colour only – nude; one starting material only – ribbon crinoline, one goal – make the clients dream. In short: the collection was light where the crinoline was embellished with crystals, almost hidden by tulle and organdie and becomes one with the body revealing a sophisticated nude look. The shimmery of Swaroswski crystals lighted up see-through dresses in black tulle from underneath, add movement to the flounces of ball gowns and enhance the brilliance of maxi skirts fashioned using 47 metres of fabrics.

45

RUNWAY

Valentino Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli did not disappoint, and in fact, amazed the fashion world with their unique and breathtaking pieces up on the Paris’ catwalk during the haute couture week. The collection was lightweight yet skillfully constructed, with hints of fierceness and elegance at the same time. With materials such as silk, tweed, satin, cashmere, tulle, feathers, sequins, rhinestone, lace and gold thread, mixed in palette of brown, beige, camel, red, gold, silver and black, the collection was utterly heart-stopping fashion. 46

Zuhair Murad Calling his collection the ‘Enchanted Forest’, Zuhair Murad showed off his creative ensembles in thoroughly decorated gowns that were all wonderfully embellished according to his inspirations. The green beading of a long-sleeved cocktail dress perfectly telegraphed the moss that collects on tree trunks, and embroidered vines and branches stretched across more than a few gowns. Undeniably glamorous and sophisticated, the collection was a fantastic addition to the most-awaited fashion event in summer in Paris.

The sweetness of

faith Ramadan: Islam’s holiest month. For some, it holds a much deeper meaning, for to them, the religion is more than just a way of life, it is the opportunity for a new start.

U

mm Abdullah was born in Southern Europe to a traditional middle class family. Raised in an area where the Muslim population accounts for only 1.3 per cent of the population, there was not much exposure to Islam. But that all changed after she moved to Dubai. “I started to learn about Islam in January 2009 in Dubai. The main reason was to learn basic information about Islam since I didn’t know much about it.” Self-questioning became the catalyst for self-improvement.“I always asked myself why I need to be good person and more importantly, how to be good person. By attending different classes at the Jumaira Islamic Learning Centre (JILC), I got my answers which dragged me to study even more.” It did not take Umm Abdullah long to see where her future would lie.“Despite it being only 2-3 months since I started to attend the courses at JILC, and despite me taking

66

a more academic approach to Islam, by the end of March, I was convinced that this is it.” Islam has entered her heart. And just like that, the world seemed clearer and the direction she was heading to, straighter.“It was amazing because I felt that a completely new horizon opened in front of me. I was learning about things that I have never had a chance to hear before and whatever I read made lots of sense to me since I was searching for inner peace. I wanted to know what is the criteria for being a good person, how to be good person, why I need to be a good person. I was very happy when I attended a course on Hadith of Jibril, where I got my answers in the very first class.” After her conversion, the task of changing her lifestyle came to fore. Umm Abdullah took it slow but never a step back.“Regarding the transition, it was gradually done so I had enough time to transform my way of thinking.”And as with all Muslim women, the hijab beckons.“Wearing the hijab was the

only thing which took a long time, almost a year. I had a fear of what people might say in my country, but when I realised that I am accountable for my deeds and that I will answer to Allah only, it was very easy to start wearing the hijab.” For many converts, or more appropriately, reverts, embracing Islam came at a cost, and Umm Abdullah experienced the heartache of losing some friends. However, her newfound faith kept her strong and steadfast.“It definitely became easier for me, finally I had Allah to rely on.” Ramadan Like many people outside of Islam, fasting during Ramadan is an intriguing prospect, one which many are willing to try out simply for the sake of it. Umm Abdullah was no different.“My first experience with Ramadan was in 2008 when I came to Dubai. I had no understanding of the Oneness of Allah, I didn’t know how to pray nor did I know how to fast, but I wanted to try. After 15 days, I burnt out, I was tired and extremely

feature exhausted so I was struggling a lot, but I still believed that Allah guided me.”

Eid-ul-fitr, one of only two days that is prescribed in Islam as a day of celebration.

After embracing Islam, the rituals became much easier as the understanding seeped in.“After learning about Islam, and in depth about Allah, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and how to pray and fast, my second try at Ramadan was very simple, though very lonely since I was living in Abu Dhabi at that time. I was staying in Abu Dhabi for 10-11 months. Eid prayer was simple too, I went to the local masjid and after the Eid prayer, I went to my room. That was it.”While she had achieved success in some ways, the lack of company did not allow her to fully appreciate the fruits of her labour and miss celebrating

Fortunately, things changed the following year.“My third Ramadan was amazing; it was completely different, I was more confident about praying and fasting, understood completely what is expected and I started to enjoy the spirit of Ramadan. I was back in Dubai and friends made a big difference and Eid was different too. I went with friends to an open musalla for Eid prayer, after which we had a breakfast and I spent all day with them having a nice and simple time

together.” Having tasted the sweetness of faith, especially in the holy month of Ramadan, Umm Abdullah has this advice for new reverts.“Read, read and read some more! Get books about Islam, and attend classes and lectures on different topics about Islam. But the most important thing is to just ‘dive in’ completely without hesitation. It is an amazing feeling and you will benefit a lot from an intellectual, spiritual, even physical aspect. Accepting Islam was the best decision in my life.”

I had a fear of what people might say in my country, but when I realised that I am accountable for my deeds and that I will answer to Allah only, it was very easy to start wearing the hijab...

SOUNDBITES

ALL THE FESTIVITIES

They say that there’s no place like home, but the reality is, home is where you make of it. We hear from people who share their different experiences of Ramadan and Eid, wherever they may be.

In Dubai, we are very preoccupied with attending Ramadan tents and spending the night away smoking shisha and just relaxing in one of the many majlis that are scattered around. In Iran, everything is family-centric; there are no tents and so, all affairs are done within the homes of your loved ones. This makes it more personal and at the same time, and also more importantly, strengthen the family ties. It’s the same with Eid where the visiting continues. What I really do miss are the authentic Iranian Ramadan and Eid dishes like Ash Reshteh, Zoolbia bamieh and Kaleh-Pacheh. – Shirin, Iran

I’ve been a Muslimah for about 3 years and Eid is still very new to me. As a single Muslimah without any Muslim family, I try to make the most of it by travelling to other Muslim countries. Last year I spent a wonderful Eid in Zanzibar, sourrounded by lots of happy children and welcoming hosts. I am looking forward to spending Eid one day with my own family, inshaAllah. However, as a Muslim, you are never alone, you always have amazing brothers and sisters around the globe, who are more than happy to open their doors for you. Priceless. – Britta, Zanzibar

In Cebu, because it’s a very Catholic country, Ramadan is almost non-existent and Eid is just a holiday. Only around 1/8th of the population in Cebu are Muslims and we only have one big mosque. People don’t even know what Eid was up till a few years ago, when the government declared it a public holiday. It’s so different here in Dubai; I love the feeling of being at peace, the adhan during maghrib, so serene.. the roads are mostly empty, and if there are cars, they’re rushing home (I’d like to think that it’s so they can break fast with their family, friends and loved ones). I feel like a part of something here and not just an isolated Muslim like I did in Cebu. – Alia, Philippines

68

SOUNDBITES I miss the vibe. Yes we’re in a Muslim country here but it feels like Muslims here take it for granted and don’t appreciate Ramadan as much as we do back home. They’re too busy doing shisha all night in Ramadan tents. In London, the community is much smaller but despite being in a nonMuslim country, everyone comes together and unites for the sake of Allah. Yes fasting is easier here – restaurants are closed during the day, no one can eat in public, working hours are shorter, etc. But the vibe’s definitely missing. – Sara, UK

I think the difference is that in Singapore, it’s much more challenging because you can see people eating everywhere. However, that does make your fasting more meaningful. Also, during Ramadan, there will be bazaars selling all kinds of food and clothes and whathaveyounots to help you during the month as well as for your preparation towards Eid. I miss those stalls where you can buy food for iftar; not only the food but the feeling of it, and the fact that thousands of Muslims converge there. The big difference between Eid in Singapore and even Malaysia, as compared to may other countries, is that we celebrate it for the whole month of Shawwal. We will visit everyone in the family and then we ask for forgiveness from one another, for the wrongs we’ve committed towards one another the past year. It’s as if the ‘old book’ has closed and a new fresh chapter begins. And the visiting is not confined to relatives only; it’s normal to see kids roaming the streets and just visiting any Muslim house, all in the hopes of getting some Eid goodies and money. – Siti, Singapore

Typically during the month of Ramadan, there is more family engagement and unity. During the day, we attend Islamic lectures together, visit each other and help out in any way possible as well as having time aside to focus on individual acts of worship. Iftar time is never spent alone! It usually is rotated and each day some family members host Iftar at their house, inviting the others to attend. A portion of food is kept aside for those who are poor and needy and they usually come around during Iftar time to take their portion. Eid back home is a beautiful experience, one that revolves around family. On Eid day, after the Eid Prayer, it’s become tradition that everyone proceeds to our family house to greet our grandparents, have breakfast and generally extend well wishes and catch up with those visiting from afar. On some occasions, but more commonly in the Eid ul Adha, we make a trip down to our hometown which is about an hour away. A parade usually takes place there and the Emir comes out on his horse in a convoy with all his guards. The whole street is closed and they perform and entertain using various methods. Lots of people gather and children are especially delighted as some of them are given the chance to ride on the horses and engage in the parade. Overall I would say what I miss most if being around family. Having people around and the joy it brings. Over here as an expat its hard to find that here, the concept of family and belonging is hard to come by. – Rukaiya, Nigeria

Get Rid of the Bad this

Ramadan From over-eating to smoking, 30-days of fasting in Ramadan is an optimal way to give the body and mind a chance to detoxify. Saadiya Ahmad takes a closer look at how fasting in Ramadan can do all of this and more.... Maria Khan says that her biggest problem in Ramadan is not hunger but caffeine withdrawal.“I drink a few cups of coffee a day on a normal basis. My habit is so addictive that the first week of Ramadan is a problem. I have severe headaches, mood swings and even my blood sugar levels drop. In the middle of Ramadan I get used to it and actually feel much better.” Overview of Ramadan Essentially Ramadan commemorates the revelation of the Quran, the holy scripture of Muslims. During this month, Muslims fast from pre-dawn until sunset, forgoing eating and drinking during the sunlight hours. The purpose of the fast is to grow in God-consciousness and moral excellence. The difference between Ramadan and

70

total fasting is the meal timings as during Ramadan, Muslims basically miss lunch and consume an early breakfast and do not eat until dusk. Detoxification Complete abstinence from food and water during the entire daylight hours in Ramadan helps the body detoxify of illnesses. But one ought to be careful with food choices made during the early dawn (Suhour) and after sunset (Iftar) meals, especially during the long days in summer. Overeating during Suhour is just as bad to the body as overwhelming an empty stomach with empty calories and foods high in fat and excess sugar during Iftar. The process of detoxification, explains Dubai-based licensed dietician Lovely

Ranganath, decreases the negative impact of toxins on the body.“The human body is somewhat protected from xenobiotics by its natural barriers, which include the gastrointestinal system, the lungs, and the skin, however, foreign bodies that do cross these natural barriers are shuttled to the body’s detoxification systems, which help to decrease the negative impact of xenobiotics,” she says.“There are two major detoxification pathways in the body; one is the immune tissue in the gut and secondly the detoxification enzyme systems in the liver.” Optimal Use of Good Foods To gain the maximum benefits of fasting in Ramadan, Ranganath says that it is paramount to avoid foods with excessive

feature

71

feature

fats, sugars, salts and caffeine.“Also ensure fresh food is available and aim for a lowfat menu,” she says, and try to select fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible. Certain foods, especially those high in specific phytochemicals, provide key nutrients that support these detoxification pathways, tells Ranganath.“Helpful foods include broccoli, cauliflower, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, garlic, onions, shallots, and leeks amongst others,.”And include foods which contain dietary fibre and FOS (fructooligosaccharides) which are present in natural honey, onions, asparagus, rye, artichokes, bananas, oats, and Chinese chives.“Consume more probiotics which are microbial foods or supplements which can be used to change or improve intestinal bacterial balance to improve health of the host,” she says, and these include fermented dairy products – such as live-culture yogurts, commercial biotic preparations and miso. Physical Benefits Besides cleansing and detoxifying the body, Ranganath reports that studies indicate that

fasting may help health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and acute illnesses such as colon disorders and allergies. Even obesity may respond to fasting. During the first 24 hours of a fast, the body is able to utilise its stored carbohydrates – in the form of glycogen – to fuel essential body processes. When glycogen reserves are depleted, fat becomes the preferred energy source. Through the practice of fasting, the digestive system also gets a break from combating the toxins that enter the body in the form of highly processed foods that make up the majority of our modern diets. Since the body is not expending energy in the digestive process, this energy can be used for other purposes such as allowing the body to heal itself. Also, abstinence from water for 8 to 10 hours is not necessarily bad for health and in fact, causes concentration of all fluids within the body, producing slight dehydration. The body has its own water conservation mechanism and it has been shown that slight dehydration and water conservation, at least in plant life, improves their longevity.

Psychological Through fasting in Ramadan, there is not only a physical detox but a mental and spiritual renewal through the encouragement of praying, mindfulness, reading Quran and of course, not focusing on food and mealtimes. There is a peace and tranquillity for those who fast during this month. Fasting in Ramadan is not only useful as it has a restraining power over daily bad habits, especially smoking, and overeating, but also a time where gossiping and generally wasting of time is strongly discouraged. The person fasting most often reports attaining mental and psychological rest, refrains from all that disturbs the integrity of his fasting, and maintains the proper behaviour controls, all which reflect positively on the general community. In fact, an Islamic hadith (saying of The Prophet, PBUH) cites, “Fasting is restraining. When anyone of you is fasting, he should refrain from obscene language or any acts of ignorance. And if anyone slanders him or quarrels with him, he should say; ‘I am fasting, I am fasting.” Several studies have revealed that the crime rates in Islamic countries decreases during Ramadan. What It All Means The bottomline, points out Ranganath, is to focus on maintaining optimal health by using foods, especially plant-based foods and their constituents (phytonutrients), to optimise the functions of the natural human detoxification systems, namely the digestive system, the liver and the immune system. “Following the above guidelines and including natural nutrient rich foods is easier said than done,” she says, pointing out, “Too little time for food planning, meal patterns that rely heavily on processed foods, takeout foods, restaurant-prepared meals all contribute to food choices and patterns that lead to steady weight gain and also the probability of developing a chronic disease.” What to Avoid in Ramadan: • Fried and fatty foods. • Foods containing too much sugar. • Over-eating especially at Suhour. • Too much tea/coffee: Before Ramadan, aim to cut back on caffeine to avoid withdrawal. Even during Ramadan, avoid excessive tea and coffee at Suhour and Iftar times. • Smoking cigarettes: If you cannot give up smoking, cut down gradually starting a few weeks before Ramadan.

Stay healthy this

Ramadan From fried dumplings and rich sweets, most often, Iftars are a gigantic feast, laden with delicious but fattening foods. Yet Saadiya Ahmad learns that by eating healthy foods for Iftar and staying hydrated during Ramadan, you can ensure a healthier fast and boost your health and wellbeing.

S

ara Haseeb, a teacher in Dubai, says that she spends around five hours a day preparing the evening Iftar for her family. “I make two soups, two sweets and lots of fried savouries in addition to the main dinner. Our healthiest dish is the fruit salad. I have admit though that after we eat, all of us just want to doze off. It’s so heavy and by the end of the month, I usually have gained about

two kilos!” Ideal Foods Sara is not alone as most of us are guilty of over-indulging or making up for the day of fasting by gorging on extremely heavy dishes during Iftar time. According to Mohamed el Falahgi, Nutritionist in Dubai’s MedCare Hospital, aim to improve your eating habits so you can maximally enjoy the spirit of the

73

feature month. “Strive to keep Ramadan meal preparation on the healthy side,” he says. “There are several ways to do this – one is to eat more raw foods in the form of fruits and vegetables such as salads, vegetable juices and steamed vegetables.” Also avoid fried foods, avoid a lot of sugar laden drinks, limit sweets such as cookies, cakes, and try to drink fresh juices. In fact, eating healthy, he says, and being physically fit and active prevents certain diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. “Low carbohydrate diets also give you more energy thus making you more likely to want to exercise,” he says. “Low carbohydrate diets are based on the premise that a diet very low in carbohydrate leads to a reduction in the body’s insulin production, resulting in fat and protein (muscle)

74

stores being used as its main energy source.” Iftar One should eat a variety of food using principles of moderation and balance. While breaking the fast, he recommends consuming a few dates to start followed by a nourishing bowl of soup with crackers or a sandwich with one cup of fruit juice. The body’s immediate need at the time of Iftar is to get an easily available energy source in the form of glucose for every living cell, particularly the brain and nerve cells. Dates and juices are good sources of sugars. Dates and juice in the above quantity are sufficient to bring low blood glucose levels to normal levels. Juice and soup help maintain water and mineral balance in the body. An unbalanced diet and too many servings of sherbets and sweets

with added sugar have been found to be unhealthy. “For dinner, rather than heavy foods, start with salad and some protein rich foods such as fish, chicken or beef which should be preferably served boiled or grilled alongside some rice, bread or vegetables,” he says. For dessert, instead of a daily sweet, have fruits like oranges, watermelon, banana, pineapple,

feature

and apples. It is also necessary that observers of this season drink as much water as possible between Iftar and bedtime. Suhour Suhour – or the pre-dawn meal – is one of the main meals in Ramadan. For this meal, high protein foods such as eggs, lean meats, and beans should be consumed along with cheese, yoghurt with bread and a portion of vegetables. This is because it takes the body seven to nine hours to digest these types of foods and this helps to delay the onset of hunger and supplies the body with the required energy throughout the day.

Advice Quantity is also important as Dr. el Falahgi stresses to eat in small quantities – do not stuff yourself. “Some of us have the habit of overeating in a very short duration as we break our fasts,” he says. “As always, check with your physician to ensure that your nutrition plan is appropriate for your body.”Traditional dishes in Ramadan include harees, soups and puddings which can actually be made much healthier with a few simple tips.“ For traditional samboosa, do not fry, bake instead using vegetables, lentils/legumes or low fat cheese to fill them healthily,” he says. For Harees and Jareesh, thick stew soup like dishes using wheat and meat, using lean meat or chicken during cooking and decreasing or avoid adding oil on top of the meal. Likewise for sweets, he says, “Use less sugar and fat, eat a smaller portion and wherever possible, replace sweets with fruits,” he explains. For traditional puddings, use natural fruits and also use less sugar, and prepare puddings with low fat milk. “Also maintain your normal activity routine wherever possible and stay active throughout the day,” he says.

Ramadan Tips at a Glance: Physical Activity If you plan to work out after ‘Iftar’, opt for small food portions that are easily digestible before starting your activities. Do activities at least two hours of breaking your fast. Cut out the caffeine Limit the intake of tea/coffee as it is a diuretic and increases the risk of dehydration – a good alternative is herbal tea. Moderation Avoid large Iftars. As most of us tend to overdo it, it is recommended to ideally break your fast with water and dates first and to eat a light meal after Maghrib prayers. Maintain hydration During the non-fasting period, be sure to drink at least six to eight glasses of water between Iftar and sleep. Also include fluids such as fresh lime juice, unstrained and unsweetened juices, and/or unsweetened ice tea as well as foods with high water content such as green leafy vegetables, oranges, watermelon, and honeydew to maintain the normal hydration level. Be Sure to Nap Experts say you don’t need more than a 15-minute siesta to really refresh you. During your break, find a quiet spot and take a nap. This can help your body adjust to the daily Ramadan schedule that requires waking up early for the Suhoor meal.

Wellness

Looking beautiful, the healthy way

There is enough dust, sand and harmful particles in the air without us putting on any more of it on our faces. If you agree, perhaps it’s time you switch to using organic make-up. The people at the Organic Foods & Café tell us why.

T

he human skin wraps and protects our bodies. It constitutes a living, dynamic tissue system. It has the remarkable ability to absorb applied products, partially or completely, into the bloodstream. In fact, up to 60% of the products we use on our skin are absorbed and deposited into the circulatory system. For instance, the average woman absorbs 30 pounds of the ingredients contained in moisturisers over 60 years These new understandings of how the skin functions reveal concerns about the possible long term effects due to the combination of chemicals used in cosmetics, often

76

termed the ‘chemical cocktail effect’. Several chemicals, which are used, in common popular cosmetics are known irritants and carcinogens. Concern stems from the knowledge that most of these ingredients are derived synthetically or from petroleum. Avoiding these substances serve to decrease overall exposure to harmful or irritating cosmetic ingredients. Natural cosmetic products and make-up are safer, healthier alternatives especially when these products are composed of all natural ingredients. A natural product is described as one that contains mostly or completely naturally derived ingredients (Antczak, 2001). It also indicates that the product

is free from, or contains minute amounts of artificial chemical additives. Caution is required when products claim to be natural. For instance, they may contain small amounts of plant extracts, but the bulk of the product is petroleum-based and loaded with fragrances. Instead, consider switching to completely natural products, which perform to the same standard as their nonnatural counterparts. The organic make-up co. offers a wide range of simple, affordable and high quality products. Their cosmetic products are carefully formulated from plant waxes, plant oils, essential oils from flowers, barks and spices, as well as richly coloured mineral pigments. Switching to all-natural cosmetic products and make-up can help you to avoid feeding your skin harmful chemicals. Many skin problems, such as acne, contact dermatitis, irritations and allergies may disappear once petroleum or synthetic ingredients are removed from your skincare regimen. Using fully natural products can contribute to healthy skin and a healthy body in the long term.

Wellness Who should use organic make-up? Everyone! Since we all want to be healthy, our bodies as well as the earth, environment benefit from organic production. In a world full of technology, machines and elements, the only thing protecting our bodies are our skins. Did you know we spend around 6 to 20 per cent of our disposable income on products for our skin? Our skin is important to us and most of us will do anything to preserve its youth and longevity. But do we ever think about what we put on our skin every day? Sure, many products claim to be safe or may even appear to be safe, but beyond the short term benefits of using the cosmetic, there are long term effects from daily absorption of its use. Creams that are supposed to treat dry skin may actually strip the skin of its natural oils, which are useful in preventing dryness. Some contain chemicals which seep through the skin and defat the skin. Whether you’re a makeup artist or esthetician which may use cosmetics every day or a consumer who applies the occasional moisturiser, we may not see any immediate effects from the current products we are using. Even though we are all dying for beautiful skin, keep in mind the healthy alternatives. We only have one skin, so care for it properly. How popular is organic make-up in this region? Is the demand high, and what is the demographic of the organic make-up users? Natural Cosmetics market in the Middle East enjoyed an estimated 20% growth in 2011. UAE market comprises major portion of regional demand. Greater consumer awareness about the potential hazards in the use of chemicals and artificial ingredients in a range of different cosmetic products has led to increasing demand for natural and organic beauty products worldwide. Mounting personal incomes are being increasingly utilised for sophisticated skincare routines and the purchase of premium skincare products. Statistics show women in the UAE spend close to a billion dirhams on beauty products and treatments (Mena Report 2009) in a year.

In Dubai and the Arab world, temperature extremes, and too humid or too dry air can pose unique challenges for skin care. The weather conditions tend to make skin dry. Therefore, it is important for women to maintain a good skin regime at all times. Another common problem for women in the Arab World is dryness of skin. This is caused by excessive exposure to strong sunlight, and the contrast between airconditioned homes and outdoor heat. There are many women who experience dark spots and age spots, largely due to environmental aggressors such as accumulated sun damage. We have noticed that more women are becoming conscious and interested in their skincare regime. Some of the most common requests that come from women in the Arab World when it comes to skincare are ageing solutions and sun protection. SPF is a very important feature, as sun exposure in the region is quite high and can result in faster ageing and other problematic issues, especially for women with sensitive skin. Facial care is very important to women in UAE, a factor that is reflected by an array of targeted products, with facial moisturisers and nourishers/anti-agers dominating, necessitated by the harsh weather. Skin whitening creams form an important basis of Middle Eastern women’s skincare regimes. Whitening products are an important skincare requirement for many consumers with darker skins. Facial and eye make-up trends in Arab region are quite different to other regions in the world. That’s because they find their roots in the region’s culture. Women here prefer full-coverage foundations, strong eye make-up and vibrant lip colours. The look is a lot about kohl-based eye make-up and enhancing the eyelashes. This translates to a strong market for fullcoverage foundations, bright lip colors, trendy eye make-up, kohl eyeliners, mascaras, etc.

Is it guaranteed to be better and healthier than conventional ones? Yes, because you do not get the chemicals in your body. Organic products are certified. Do check the certifications and ingredients to see how natural they really are. The prices for organic make-up are very high when compared to conventional brands. Why is this so, and what could help push the prices lower? The more the demand, the lower prices can get. It all starts with education, informative marketing in media not only on organic products, but also on the background, why etc.! People do want to pay for quality. Look at the big brands like L’oreal, they are selling a lot and have similar or higher prices than organic products. It is about the image people have. Organic is great because it gives you glow and health now and long term, without side effects!

What are some of the organic make-up musthaves specifically for this region? Dr.Hauschka from Germany: This is our most renowned brand. Their holistic

Working Muslim Women While stereotypically there are misconceptions that Muslim women are not encouraged to work, the reality is that many Muslim women do, and Saadiya Ahmad meets some of these hard-working dynamos to discover how they manage a work-life balance. Dedra Stevenson, author of The Hakima’s Tale, is also a screen writer and an adjunct professor at Zayed University. Her key to balance is spending some ‘silly’ time with her kids every day as well as maintaining a strong spiritual connection with God. She narrates,“I do face some problems being a Muslim woman, especially here in the UAE, when most events related to my work are held in places that serve alcohol. I end up feeling like I’m the only one in the room with an Abaya and a Shayla on, and often times, I’m the only one who does not have a ‘drink’ in my hand. And most people in the entertainment industry are single or men, which means they don’t have a family to juggle around in order to attend functions and relevant events. I’ve had a pretty hard time juggling family with work actually. For example, when I took up teaching, I could only opt for a part-time post as I must leave by 2pm each day to be there for my children in the afternoon. My son is autistic and goes to the Al Thiqa club for the Handicapped each afternoon between 5 to 8pm, so if I were to come home after 5, I would literally not see him at all until the late evening. It’s a hard choice to make, as I’d love to be a full-time professor, but I must put my kids first. And as Muslim women, we mustn’t put our families in jeopardy at any time, but work extra hard to balance both, to make our families and our country proud of us.”

Mathilde Lujayne Montel is a PR Consultant who says that Muslim women can choose to either work or to be a housewife just as they please, however every woman should contribute to society in some way. She tells,“Being a Muslim means that I am careful with what I promote as it becomes a responsibility. Therefore I stick to my ethics. When I became a Muslim, I suppose there was an adjusting phase where I learnt how to accommodate new changes like praying five times a day and adjusting to fasting while living my normal, regular life. In Islam, women are encouraged to learn and to have an education; they are empowered contrary to popular belief. It is a personal choice we can all make and personally, working brings me a sense of fulfilment. I find it very rewarding. My key to balance is to stay true to myself and to the education my parents have given me, to stay close and connected with my family who are extremely supportive, exercise and to continue to learn about our Creator. I find that family and prayers keep me the most balanced and serene in the equation. Prayers are very powerful and also a great remedy to stress and to stay grounded and I see it as a form of yoga. My advice to women is that it all begins with willpower, as well as a supportive family and partner who will encourage and inspire you during difficult times. These can truly make a difference.”

feature Mona Mirza is a Medical Aesthetician, Laser Specialist and CEO of Biolite Aesthetic clinic and says that while the world perceives women in ‘hijab’ as weak or oppressed, that stereotype needs to end. She explains,“Most women have chosen to wear hijab themselves and in no way does that impact our intelligence or limit our ability to be forerunners of any industry. In my industry, many female plastic surgeons, dermatologists and aestheticians are entering the aesthetics market. I have never felt the need to assert myself to gain acceptance. Generally most of my clients prefer to come to a clinic led by a female. Wearing a hijab hasn’t made me less professional or limited me in any way though in the beauty industry, the hijab may seem limiting to some. It’s given me boundless confidence especially as clients have been extremely complimentary. In fact, being a Muslim woman in the region is always an advantage especially as the laws are Sharia-based. One may consider this as a disadvantage too but it’s how you perceive it. To help me rejuvenate, I like to paint, read and tend to my garden. I also like to meditate 10 minutes every morning with one of Allah’s 99 names which keeps my daily spirits high. Education, working and self-development are the pillars for a successful nation, be it a woman or a man. We leave legacies and history behind and real lessons for our children. Women, by and large, are capable multi-taskers who can manage home and work effectively; so why not work and give back.”

Ally El-Sayed owns and manages MEA Communications – a public relations and marketing firm – and explains her family has always encouraged her to pursue her dreams. She elaborates, “My mother has always told me that I could be anything and anyone I wanted to be. And I will never forget when my father looked me straight in the eye and said with the conviction only a proud father could possess – I was the sharpest person he knew – so I worked hard and hope that I live up to the promise they have seen in me; in fact, the letters in our company’s name each represent the first initial of each of our names. I have faced a number of obstacles being a woman – here and in Canada. I’ve had to fight for equal pay and benefits or finding myself having to defend an opinion or a sound marketing or PR strategy that would not have been questioned had it been offered by a male colleague. There is also the issue of finding that balance between being seen as aggressive versus assertive. I sometimes shoot from the hip or can be very gung-ho which is immediately labelled as aggressive but I believe I have a responsibility and I am required to set an example. If you search the texts of the Quran and the hadith, one of the main themes is equality between men and women. Working gives you financial independence which gives you choice. Choice gives you power. A woman can only pass on these lessons of the principles of positive change if she’s integrated the lesson of financial independence into her experience.”

feature Dr. Saliha Afridi is a Clinical Psychologist and Managing Director of LightHouse Arabia; Community Psychology Clinic, and says that the key to balance is to take out time for yourself as too often, working women give to everyone and never have any time ‘left’ for us. She tells, “I have found it a doable challenge to juggle family and my job. Perhaps it is because during my education and first few years I had two critical ingredients, namely a supportive family and husband and secondly, a Spartan discipline. I never felt my religion had a preference for me working or not; however culturally, women from my cultural background are generally not encouraged to work as it will take away from the family. I also believe that I should not compromise my home/ children life for a work life which is why I wanted to get into a career which allowed flexibility. I prefer to work the hours when my children are at school. I like to be home soon after they arrive home from school. But there are days I come home very tired from an exhausting day at work, and although I am physically present, I am not emotionally available as much as I would like to be. I believe it is important for my children to see their mother as a contributing member of her society; I never tell my children I am working for money but because I have a social responsibility to give back to my community. ‘Balance and unwinding’ should be done as a preventative measure, rather than waiting to deplete completely and then energising...”

Sahar Davodi is the Founder and Managing Partner of H2O Pure Blue, a business she has been running for four years. She says that coming from an Iranian family, she was always taught that a woman has to be intelligent, hard working, and be able to take care of herself. She elaborates, “Often times, women, especially Muslim women, are stereotyped as weak and submissive. If you were to ask someone to describe me, those are the last two words that would come to mind. Today, more women are empowering themselves and no longer depending on men to support them financially. There is an ever growing number of women running companies all over the world, whether they are family owned or a Fortune 500 company. Although we are not a multinational conglomerate, I’d still like to think that I am one of them. As 99 per cent of my professional life has been spent in Dubai, I have never really been faced with any issues regarding my religion, and in fact sometimes it is an added value as we are in a Muslim country. Even though running your own business is a 24/7 job, we try to keep weekends free for unwinding with friends at the beach or nice dinners. We especially love going to the movies for what we call our ‘popcorn past-time’. Additionally I do love Bikram yoga so try and fit in a class whenever we can. Women are the foundation of society, wherever you are in the world, and it is our duty to be stewards of positive change in whatever way we can.”

THE TOP

mistakes people make in Ramadan Most of us embark on our fasting and praying during the month of Ramadan with gusto only to find we are making mistakes without being aware of it. Saadiya Ahmad discloses the top 10 key mistakes to ensure a more fruitful Ramadan experience.

Mistake 2: Skipping Suhour Some of us also may snack all night long only to fall asleep in the middle of the night or else not wake up for Suhour intentionally as we dislike eating so early in the morning. However, Dr. Wyne notes that Suhour is a true representation of the spirit of Ramadan. “ We are altering our rhythms of sleeping and eating for the sake of Allah; if we observe Suhour, we are most likely to be observing the dawn prayer,” she says, and in the dead of night, when we awaken for Suhour, we embrace the purpose of Ramadan to develop discipline and alter our behaviour – not because it makes sense – but because we are serving Allah.

Mistake 1: Too much emphasis on food and drink For some of us, Ramadan marks a time of developing a near obsession for Iftar and what we are going to eat, from the starter to the main and even dessert. According to Dr. Tara Wyne, Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Director at Lighthouse Arabia, it is perfectly natural to over-focus on food when we know we cannot have it as our interest and cravings seem to become magnified. “ However in Ramadan, we are attempting to re-train our habits and values,” she says, and eating modestly when we open our fast is both physically and psychologically healthier. If we look at the meaning of Ramadan and act accordingly, Dr. Wyne reinforces that we remain congruent physically, psychologically and also spiritually.

2

3

Mistake 3: Fasting but not giving up other vices or sins From backbiting about your friends and family to using expletives to pepper your language, Dr. Wyne points out that literally speaking, fasting without behavioural or mental change is simply a hunger test and means that we are not using Ramadan to our advantage to develop more empathy with others in deprived states.“ We are not aspiring to have more self-control, we are not cleansing our bodies, hearts, mind and soul; it’s a pretty empty exercise if you are not willing to give anything up,” she says.

83

FEATURE

4

Mistake 5: Spending exorbitantly on Iftar parties Some of us break our budgets trying to out-do our friends with the vast number of dishes served in an elaborate Iftar party. According to Dr. Wyne, if Ramadan is a chance to re-train our habits, then surely spending appropriately is relevant. “ We should avoid being lavish and profligate as these behaviours do not demonstrate we are living the spirit of Ramadan,” she says. “ If we were to give exorbitantly to charity, then we are observing the spirit of Ramadan, but to be greedy and spendthrift and simply go from one expensive Iftar buffet to another where we overeat seems to defeat the purpose and Ramadan becomes another empty experience.”

Mistake 4: Wasting time Mindlessly surfing the net or watching unlimited amounts of TV – Dr. Wyne explains that when we fritter away time to quickly get to the end of our fast, we are not mindful of the experience, we are not connecting with the spirit of Ramadan and it defeats the purpose of it. “ Ramadan is a time of multiplied reward, we prevent ourselves from accessing any of these by wasting the whole experience down to passing time,” she says.

5

6 Mistake 6: Spending all day cooking Another problem some of us face is pulling out old cookbooks and googling new recipes to experiment with. Some of us spend more than half the day preparing one meal and Dr. Wyne says that when we do this, we give ourselves and others the message that Ramadan is a contradiction when we starve all day and over-indulge all night. “ We can utilise the precious time and the state of Ramadan with reflection, prayer, reading, all of which serve to feed the spirit and psyche and reinforces that we don’t need to always serve the physical desires or our worldly pursuits in order to be satisfied,” she says.

84

FEATURE Mistake 7: Not fasting if you miss Suhour And there are some of us who may inadvertently miss Suhour and decide we will skip the fast that day because of this. Dr. Wyne reinforces that Ramadan isn’t supposed to be easy or convenient and to miss fasts is compromising our promise to Allah; we are not fulfilling this spiritual test.“ We are conveniently picking and choosing the parts we find easiest,” she says. “ If we miss Suhour and still fast it will perhaps help to strengthen our resolve not to miss it again, because we will be hungrier and feel guilty about perhaps missing the critical dawn prayer.”

Mistake 8: Fasting but not praying Fasting in Ramadan is not a way to lose some weight. In fact, during Ramadan, Dr. Wyne explains we need to remind ourselves of the meaning and purpose of fasting.“ It is essentially a test of faith from Allah and we are essentially enduring hardship for the purpose of submitting ourselves to the will of Allah,” she says. “ Prayer is our commitment to our God so fasting and prayer together serves the core purposes of self-improvement and spiritual strengthening.”

9 10

7 8

Mistake 9: Mixing fasting and dieting In Ramadan, Dr. Wyne points out that we can reap the greatest reward if our intention is to serve Allah and to attempt to cleanse our body and soul throughout Ramadan.“ If we use Ramadan as a glorified diet, we actually change the raison d’etre for fasting and make it a worldly enterprise where we are serving our vanity and divert from the spiritual aspect,” she says. Not to mention that this can also be physically harmful as after the daylong fasting, if we are dieting, we may continue to restrict our food, and in this climate, we can really damage our bodies.

Mistake 10: Sleeping in excess Some individuals switch timings to accommodate the day of fasting and instead of using their valuable time during the day, simply switch off the fast by snoozing. Sleeping away the fasting hours is an avoidance of the trials of Ramadan and reduces the whole month to a test of coping with hunger, points out Dr. Wyne. “ It is supposed to be a far richer experience where we strip away all our normal physical and worldly pursuits and use the space created to improve ourselves,” she says. And when we actually mindfully experience Ramadan, its spiritual rewards help us to manage the physical hardship. Sleeping, she adds, does not permit any of this evolution in our mindful coping.
