Introduction

The idea of this project is to provide a new flexible housing typology that is able to adapt with the business/ entrepreneurship basic requirement. Considering business/entrepreneurship as among the core activities of Kampung Baru, the housing scheme will provide a platform for the entrepreneurs that is integrated with living space especially for the young generation and kickstarter. Mainly focused is on Kampung Baru-base entrepreneurial typology i.e. foodies, services, and handycraft products. The design will be based on the need of space to accomodate these requirements. The housing scheme will allow customization to the units within certain restriction which only capable to serve the SMEs space requirements. The restriction purposely targeted to control the cost for the implementation. It is because personalization has always been associated with extra cost and can potentially increase the housing price (Barlow et al., 2003; Gann, 1996). Since this scheme will be categorised under medium cost housing, certain control and restriction need to be applied.

Problem Statement

Current entrepreneurial acitivities growth in Kampung Baru lead to improper built environment management i.e. extended houses into setback area, blocking public facilities maintenance etc. because of demand on the entrepreneurial space. Housing preferences and personalization have become widespread and the needs for individuation because of changes in lifestyle has increased recently (Hentschke, Formoso, Rocha, & Echeveste, 2014). Either provided or not, the resident might do the modification by themself to suit their requirement and it is better to introduce a housing typology that allow them to customize their space according to their needs

Aim

The design intention is to demonstrate flexible vertical entrepreneur social housing typology for Kampung Baru bussines nature i.e. retails, foods, and SME.

Kampong Baru Urban Context

The river and city context of Kampong Baru is physically an advantage and a great potential to Kampong Baru butbeing disconnected by the elevated highway. However, the existence of this elevated highway can also become part of its potential by having a development that can integrate the urban character of Kampong Baru and the elevated structure. This study will discussed on the potential of having an integrated development that can benefits both elevated highway concession together with social and economic aspect of Kampong Baru. This barrier has been blocking and become passive edge to Kampong Baru since the completion of AKLEH on 2001. Besides, Jalan Raja Abdullah, a main spine of Kampong Baru connecting to most of its nodes to be rejuvenated into a pedestrian friendly zone with aim to increase the reachability of Kampung Baru by pedestrianization and improve the surrounding commercial and entrepreneurial potential. p.march | 25

Hypothesis

Towards the pedestrianization, transition of vehicles into pedestrian is crucial. AKLEH with its vehicular users and elevated structure is not directly connected to Kampong Baru, hence a building with certain programs is required to blend these contrast. Thus, to support the concept of pedestrianization, a catchment point from AKLEH, an elevated highway will be introduced for vehicles to be channeled into Kampung Baru but filtered into pedestrians. The programs will act as vehicles’ catchment which will be a drive-thru building offering the products from Kampong Baru with new prospect of promotion and marketing tools for Kampong Baru.
