ARC182: Representaon II Alphabets

Exercise 01A Aparajita Rao

STEP 1A INVOLVES EXTRACTING THE GEOMETRIC LOGIC OF THE HELVETICA ALPHABET THROUGH A SET OF PRECISE DRAWINGS. THE FIRST SET OF DRAWINGS IS THE RESULT OF THE EXTRACTION--A NETWORK OF GUIDELINES THAT ALIGN WITH THE MAJOR MOMENTS OF EACH CHARACTER. THE SECOND SET OF DRAWINGS IS A PRECISE TRACING OF THE HELVETICA CHARACTERS J AND N, WITH THE GUIDELINES UNDERLAID, AND CORNERS AND CRITICAL POINTS EXTRACTED FROM THESE TRACINGS. THE THIRD SET OF DRAWINGS IS A RECREATION OF THE ORIGINAL CHARACTERS USING ONLY THE EXTRACTED POINTS AND GUIDELINES. IT CONSTITUTES A NEW FONT THAT FOLLOWS THE GEOMETRIC LOGIC OF HELVETICA.

PHASE 2

STEP 2A INVOLVES CREATING A THREE-DIMENSIONAL OBJECT FROM THE COMPOUND LETTER. THE FIRST OBJECT USES THE LETTER AS A TRACK, AND FORMS A CIRCULAR PIPE ALONG THE TRACK. THE HEMISHPHERIC CAPS COMPLETE THE PIPED APPEARANCE. THE SECOND OBJECT RECONSTRUCTS A SINGLE-AXIS EXTRUSION OF THE LETTER USING ONLY ONE-DEGREE CURVATURE. THESE ONE-DEGREE CURVES MEET AT THE CRITICAL POINTS AND CORNERS OF THE ORIGINAL LETTER, AND FORM A NETWORK OF TRIANGULAR PLANES THAT COMPRISES THE SOLID. THE THIRD OBJECT USES TWO-DEGREE CURVATURE TO CONNECT THE CORNERS AND BYPASS THE ORIGINAL CURVATURE, CREATING AN ORGANIC NETWORK OF NODES THAT COMPRISES AN INFLATED-LOOKING SOLID.

STEP 2B

ISTEP 2B INVOLVES PRODUCING VARIATIONS OF ALPAHBET FORMS THAT FALL INTO THREE “FAMILIES.” THE FIRST FAMILY IS THE BLOCK REARRANGEMENT. EACH BLOCK REARRANGEMENT COMPRISES A SET OF BLOCKS CUT FROM SINGLE-AXIS EXTRUSIONS OF LETTER PROFILES. ONE REARRANGEMENT LIMITS THE AXIS OF ROTATION TO THE Z-AXIS, THE SECOND LIMITS IT TO THE X- AND Y-AXES, AND THE THIRD ROTATES BLOCKS ON ALL AXES. THE SECOND FAMILY IS THE SWEPT PROFILES OBJECT. EACH OBJECT COMPRISES A SET OF PIECES MADE FROM TWO DIFFERENT LETTER PROFILES, AND TWO DIFFERENT PARABOLIC ARCS THAT GUIDE THE CROSS-SECTIONAL TRANSITION BETWEEN LETTERS. THE FIRST TWO OBJECTS USE TWO OF THESE PIECES, WHILE THE THIRD USES THREE PIECES. THE THIRD FAMILY IS THE BOOLEAN PROFILE. EACH PROFILE IS THE RESULT OF A BOOLEAN INTERSECTION BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT LETTER PROFILES, MADE THREE-DIMENSIONAL IN ONE OF TWO WAYS. THE FIRST IS THE RESULT OF AN INTERSECTION BETWEEN TWO PROFILES REVOLVED ABOUT THEIR INTERSECTIONS WITH THE SURROUNDING GRID. THE SECOND IS THE RESULT OF AN INTERSECTION BETWEEN TWO PROFILES EXTRUDED IN PERPENDICULAR AXES. THE THIRD IS AN INTERSECTION BETWEEN ONE EXTRUDED PROFILE, AND ONE REVOLVED PROFILE.

FEB 17 - MAR 03

THE FINAL STEP OF PHASE 2 IS A SET OF ANALYTICAL DRAWINGS DETAILING THE FABRICATION LOGICS OF THE THREE OBJECTS. THE BOOLEAN PROFILE IS SPLIT INTO NINE SECTION DRAWINGS. THE SWEPT PROFILES OBJECT IS DRAWN AS A NETWORK OF CONTOUR LINES IN THE XY AND XZ PLANES, AND A MULTI-AXIS WIREFRAME OUTLINE. THE BLOCK REARRANGEMENT IS DRAWN EXPLODED INTO A KIT OF PARTS, EXPOSING ITS ASSEMBLY PROCESS, AND ALSO DRAWN UNFOLDED, WHICH INFORMED THE NEXT PHASE OF THE LETTER’S DEVELOPMENT.

PHASE 3 OF 4

THE THIRD PHASE ADDRESSES THE REQUIREMENTS OF FABRICATION AND ASSEMBLY OF THE OBJECTS AS TANGIBLE ENTITIES. STEP 3A OPTIMIZES THE OBJECTS FOR THREE CONSTRUCTION STRATEGIES-STACKING CUTOUTS OF THE OBJECT’S CONTOURS, A DOUBLE-AXIS JUNCTION OF THE OBJECT’S CONTOUR CUTOUTS AT THE PLACES WHERE THE PLANES INTERSECT, AKIN TO A LATTICE OR EGG CRATE, AND AN UNFOLDING OF ALL OF THE OBJECT’S SURFACES. STEP 3B USES THE LAST OF THESE DRAWINGS AS A CUTTING TEMPLATE, AND REALIZES THE BLOCK REARRANGEMENT AS A 6” X 6” X 6” HAND-SCORED AND FOLDED MODEL MADE FROM MUSEUM BOARD.

THE FINAL STEP REALIZES THE COCOON-LIKE CONTAINER AND ITS CONTENTS BY WAY OF THE IMAGE. THE COCOON IS DRESSED UP WITH CUSTOM MATERIALS AND INTRICATE LIGHTING SYSTEMS AS A FORM OF COSMETICS. THE FIRST RENDERED IMAGE OF THE COCOON IS A PHOTOREALISTIC ONE THAT PLACES IT IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, MONTANA, AND DRESSES IT UP LIKE AN OVERSIZED MALACOSOMA LARVA NEST. THE SECOND RENDERED IMAGE IS AN ABSTRACT ONE, MEANT TO HIGHLIGHT SIMULTANEOUSLY THE TRANSLUCENCY AND SHAPE OF THE SKIN BY USING A SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION OF A KNOWN TRANSLUCENT MATERIAL, FRESH WATER, ON THE OUTSIDE, AND A PLAYFUL CHOICE OF POOL TILE ON THE INSIDE TO CREATE A COHESIVE AESTHETIC. THE DEFORMATION OF THE LOW-OPACITY WATER TEXTURE REVEALS THE SHAPE OF THE COCOON.
