ABOUT ME

My name is Andrew, I am an energetic, adventurous, ambitious and imaginative young designer, graduating from Cal Poly Pomona with a Bachelors degree in Architecture in June of 2016. I am looking for a full-time position to launch my career. I have had the early opportunity to work in several valuable experience settings, and I wish to enhance the great education which I have received thus far. I seek a mentor company to build outstanding relationships and projects. MEDIASTARY

__________________________________________ PRIOR TO BEGINNING MY CULMINATING SENIOR PROJECT, I UNDERTOOK A STUDIO COURSE TO CHALLENGE THE WAY I THINK ABOUT DESIGN. UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF GUEST STUDIO INSTRUCTOR FRANK CLEMENTI, WE GRAFTED NEW FUNCTIONS AND NEW MEANINGS TO ESTABLISHED MONUMENTS AROUND THE WORLD. HERE, TIMES SQUARE IS DEFINED AS A MONUMENT TO A CONNECTED WORLD. A MONASTERY IS PROPOSED TO CO-OPT MESSAGES ABOUT THE CONTROL OF KNOWLEDGE AMONG THE LANDSCAPE OF MEDIA. THE MONKS CREATE A SUSPENDED SANCTUARY AT THE CROSSROADS OF THE WORLD.

MEDIASTARY Focused as the crossroads of consumer media Times Square is a stage for positive cohabitation of media and message. The consistent holders of information, monks script messages for literate and illiterate, operating cooperatively on a media landscape. The media monks construct their monastery in the sky, creating messages for those below. Their form , pixels , cells are canvas for co-opting manuscripts for the masses. Arranged by multiple perspective opportunities pixel grids flock to programmatic elements of the media monastery. Projecting, drawing and expanding images in public view, monks string this new landscape high above the city floor, seeking to transcend material media.

AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR A BLIGHTED AREA OF NORTH WESTERN LOS ANGELES. IN A STUDIO INTEGRATED WITH STRUCTURES AND ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS, THIS SCHOOL CONTESTS A TYPICALLY PROGRAMMED INSTITUTION. LOOKING AT SCHOOLS IN COPENHAGEN AND JAPAN AS CASE STUDIES, EMPHASIS ON NON TRADITIONAL TEACHING, INCLUDING OUTDOOR LESSONS ARE PROGRAMMED INTO THE ARCHITECTURE. CENTERED IN AN AREA WITH LITTLE COMMUNITY SPACE, DEDICATIONS OF SPACE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC , AND AN ARCHITECTURE WITH LARGE PRESENCE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD SEEK TO CREATE A COMMUNAL NODE.

15 RESIDENTIAL UNITS ACCOMPANIED BY OPEN GROUND FLOOR OFFICE SPACE. COMMUNAL PEDESTRIAN STREET AND UNDERGROUND PARKING ENLIVEN A LIVE AND WORK COMMUNITY. GEARED TOWARD A GROWING POPULATION IN THE SILVERLAKE NEIGHBORHOOD THIS PROPOSAL PROVIDES PRIVATE OPEN TERRACE SPACE AT EACH RESIDENCE. FACING INWARD, THE OUTDOOR SPACE BREAKS THE CIRCULATION FROM LIVING SPACE TO WORK SPACE. THE IDEA THAT WORK SPACE IS CLOSE BUT SEPARATE FROM THE LIVING SPACE, PRESCRIBES A MENTAL DISCONNECT BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL AND PRIVATE.

FINAL PRESENTATION MODEL, BEHIND THE SCREEN FRAMING MODEL, BUILT AND CALCULATED FOR INTEGRATED STRUCTURES COURSE STUDY MODEL

WILDLIFE OBSERVATION STATION _________________________________________________________ THIS OUTPOST ENGAGES VISITORS WITH A NEWLY CREATED WILDLIFE SANCTUARY. THE FORM, A SIMPLE BAR IS DIVIDED BY LIGHT, BY SPACE AND DIRECTIONALITY. PROVIDING SCIENTIFIC AND LEISURELY PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES. MULTIPLE PLATFORMS TRANSECT THE FORMAL ARRANGEMENT. THE PROJECT IS A FORMAL EXPERIMENT WITH NOVEL FEATURES WHICH SEEK TO MERGE THE FORM AND THE LANDSCAPE.

//39

THE FACADE EXPLORED IN THIS BAR SCHEME IS INTENDED TO VISUALIZE A BLURRING OF HARD EDGES NORMALLY OBSERVED IN A RECTANGULAR FORM. WHILE INTERIOR SPACES ARE DIVERSIFIED BY INTERPLAYS OF LIGHT THE WHITE FACADE IS INTENDED TO BE BROKEN DOWN BY TRANSPARENCIES AND MOIRE EFFECT OF A MULTILAYER SCREEN WHICH COULD BE REOCCUPIED BY NATIVE VEGETATION AND WILDLIFE.

THIS PROJECT IS AN EXPLORATION IN THE DIVISION OF A BAR PARTI. PROGRAMMATIC REQUIREMENTS BECOME NESTED WITHIN THE BAR, WHILE BEING DISSECTED BY LIGHT. SOUTHERLY OPENINGS ON THE ROOF AS WELL AS ALONG EACH FACADE CREATE DRAMATICALLY LIT INTERIOR SPACES. AS A RURAL OUTPOST, HARD SCAPE AND LANDSCAPE ARE MINIMIZED TO ENHANCE THE DIRECT INTERPLAY OF THE ALMOST UNTOUCHED LAND SURROUNDING THE PROJECT.

THE BOARDWALK MEETS THE WATER, THE COMMUNITY MEETS THE SEA. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS OVERLAY SCHEME IS GOVERNED BY A GRID WHICH HAS TWO LEVELS OF COMPLEXITY. SITE SCORING AND A DETAIL OVERLAY. THIS ALLOWS FOR A HUMAN SCALE AND CONTEXTUAL SCALE EXPERIENCE. THIS GIRD GOVERNS MATERIAL SELECTION MASS AND FORM. THE ARTICULATIONS SUPPORT A PROGRAM WHERE VISITORS WITH DIFFERENT COMFORT LEVELS WITH OCEAN AND SEA LIFE CHOOSE THEIR PATH AND RELATIONSHIP WITH THE WATERS EDGE. FORM AND CIRCULATION REINFORCE THE IDEA OF CHOICE AND PROVIDE A COMMUNITY MEETING AREA AND SMALL LAB. 0’
