Curator’s Statement

FourSquared 2017 is a unique exploration of the works of sixteen Bay Area artists. Each of the artists has produced sixteen small works, presented in sixteen clusters giving the audience the experience of sixteen micro solo exhibitions. All works are priced under $500. This 8th annual exhibition is a reflection of the co-curators’ strong and abiding interest in local, affordable art represented here by some of our most talented local artists. Curators: Michael Yochum is the author of SF Art News, which writes about artists and openings in the San Francisco Bay Area. Matthew Frederick is founder of Art Farm, an artist collective in the Mission, where he maintains his studio. Michael and Matthew are co-founders of Arc Gallery, Arc Fine Arts Consulting & Arc Studios, along with Stephen C. Wagner and Priscilla Otani.

Conspicuous Consumption With each pallet knife load of beautiful pigment, my eyes take in the fresh paint as it sticks to the smooth surface. It isn’t only the thick paint that intrigues and inspires my work; it is the endless possibilities of color and my emotional reaction to it. It seems as my style evolves, my consumption of paint continues to grow. My love of impasto paint is evident across all my work and especially in this series. When developing these 16 pieces I pondered what people consume a lot of, and after observing 100’s of people in Sausalito, ice-cream was it! My studio is located in Sausalito, where visitors come from every part of the world. Everyone seems to be conspicuously consuming ice-cream and sometimes… my art.

The Algorithm Project This project is a concept-based grouping of paintings made specifically for the FourSquared exhibition. The work explores inter-personal relationships in the information age and the influence of social mediabased algorithms on the way we transmit and receive information. I began by asking Facebook followers to send me “selfies” and then used the images I received as the source material for the work. This “crowd-sourcing” of the images took the role of the artist-as-selector out of my hands. The photos were then run through a visual algorithmic process that I designed in a graphics program. Every photo had the same graphic processes applied equally regardless of the quality of the source image. The resulting “algorithmic portraits” were then painted in oil on panels by hand.

Strange Fruit Strange Fruit is based on the facial angle studies of Petrus Camper. An 18th century Dutch physician, anatomist, physiologist, anthropologist, paleontologist and naturalist who stated that African features were the furthest away from the standards of “classical beauty. For this project I have appropriated his examples of African features as subjects to speak for the African American men, women, and children that have perished at the hands of state sponsored violence. Each board represents a specific individual such as Tamir Rice, or Sandra Bland. The text on each board is taken from the language that is generated from Google image searches of each person. Many of the descriptions overlap and align with each other to create an unfortunate and ongoing narrative for a community that is often under siege.

Synchronicity

Growing up in rural western Turkey, I spent my days running between fields, climbing olive trees, and catching free rides by hanging on the backs of horse carts. Rows of cherries in wooden boxes, lines of an old olive tree trunk, shapely fig leaves between the thin branches—these images caught my attention early. Now, as a full-time artist, I still look at the world with the curious eyes of the girl from the village. A self-taught photographer, I employ camera shake, multiple exposures, and other unconventional techniques to transform familiar objects into abstract compositions. This series, Synchronicity, explores Carl Jung’s concept of "meaningful coincidences”—events that occur with no causal relationship yet seem to be meaningfully related. Shot in busy public spaces, anonymous figures pass each other at a frenetic pace, blending into each other, and creating ambiguous new shapes. Past, present, and future overlap. Ghosts appear in the crowd. Patterns emerge from chaos. These images were captured using multiple exposures, and encased in thick acrylic blocks. They can be displayed individually, or in “meaningful” clusters of several images.

Tracy Taylor Grubbs Ablution Series III In art and in life, I seem to be searching for ways to let the static experience of a single view give way to the ecstatic possibilities of the ephemeral. Most of my works are visual metaphors that expand or deepen my understanding of the world. I draw inspiration from the power of art’s silence and stillness to convey knowledge. A sink is an object at once empty and full of possibilities, a reminder of the sacred in the guise of the everyday. It can be a baptismal font, a place to stack the dishes, a place to wash our hands. I have been working with images of sinks for several years now. Over time, these forms have taken on new meaning as portals to the flow of life and the fragility of the human body. For this latest iteration of the Ablution Series, I let the resistance of the material I was painting over and my own memory work together to conjure a series of forms and their ever-present emptiness.

Sanctuary Bay Sanctuary Bay is a collection of new oil paintings inspired by living in San Francisco, a true sanctuary city, vibrant with color and life, protected by lush forests and a deep sea. To find oasis at a journey’s end, one holds vision, intention & surrenders to bring stillness and peace to both our outside and inner worlds. In these challenging times, finding sanctuary is more important than ever. Aondrea’s work continues to be a modern interpretation of the natural world. The theme chosen for this collection came from her great appreciation for a life lived near the ocean with its infinite capacity to soothe and nourish her soul. Each painting is an abstracted exploration of atmospheric elements of nature where the visual poetry of color, texture and light form an emotionally evocative experience filled with a quiet reverence for living in such a beautiful place. As a whole, these paintings tell a story about finding safe havens midst life’s unknowns, rich with gestural mark making to express life’s mysterious dance between chance and intention. Individually, each piece allows numerous and ever-changing memories to arise, resulting in feelings of calm, transcendent hope and an expanded sense of place and belonging in our natural world.

Technology gives us the ability to swiftly collect seemingly endless amounts of data with little incentive to edit. What we trade for this ease is any sense of deep understanding or memory. Using the visual language of digital source material (lens flare, odd colors, fringing, dust on the sensor) as a familiar reference point, I paint scenes plucked from the vast stream of quickly captured images. By combining highly specific photorealistic imagery with the relatively imprecise and unpredictable qualities of oil paint applied to a hand built canvas, I intend to return a sense of weight and permanence to the moments we’ve overlooked and lost. If we can become more grounded in the present, we have the ability to make a stronger connection to our changing environment. Sixteen Views of Yosemite Falls is a record of my travels to Yosemite Valley and the amazing variability of its iconic waterfall through the hours of the day and changes of season.

John McRae Wings of Change

A Self-Portrait in Sixteen Pieces To me, art is a vehicle for transformation, and Wings of Change is about the transformations I’ve made as an artist. The sixteen pieces merge to make a single self-portrait, yet I’m just as happy to see them fly off in different directions. My artistic career began in 1970s Fresno, helping my stepfather upholster home bars, shaggin’ wagons, and other icons of the decade. I later joined the Great American Grape Tray Company, refurbishing and decoupaging the vintage grape drying trays ubiquitous in the San Joaquin Valley. I was good at observing and picking up techniques, and these early jobs gave me a sense of color, composition, precision, and finish. Throughout the ’80s I built a career as a landscaper, creating living environments for corporations and private clients. During this period I discovered the art of retail merchandising. Intriguingly, the principles of outdoor design applied to indoor retail as well. Vintage Christmas decor especially appealed to me for its use of “real” elements — wire, glass, velvet, and wood. My partner and I opened a Christmas shop, Every Day’s a Holiday, in San Francisco in the late ’90s. I began recreating vintage ornaments, and my works were licensed worldwide, helping establish a dedicated following. In 2004 I joined Castle in the Air, in Berkeley, as an in-store artist and teacher of forgotten crafting techniques. Here I have truly been able to embrace the process of artistic transformation, working in many mediums and scales. My recent work includes the merging of gemstones and decorative German foil paper into highly prized baroque jewelry.

Miwako Nishizawa Sixteen Views of Golden Gate Bridge My work has focused in a broad sense is on my personal reactions to the colors, shapes, and moods of the American landscape. I seek to bring a fresh and somewhat unique perspective to the familiar. My primary medium is Japanese Woodblock. Working on a smaller scale allows me to enjoy the full range of technical possibilities that the Japanese woodblock process offers. I am able to re-use blocks and re-cast scenes across the seasons and times of day with subtle additions and variation. While my work is intended for all, I feel this series will feel personal for Bay Area residents. Having set my roots here, I feel a deep connection to the community and to its unique love for the natural beauty of the Bay Area.

Derek Nunn Rare Earth Elements Stones are usually lumped with sticks as just the detritus of the world, but get away from the city out to where the earth is itself, and you’ll see an entire language of geology murmuring away in every landscape. Slowed to the limit, gnarled in time, these forms appear permanent only because we have no idea what it really means to endure, to last, to be cycling at the grandest possible scale. Each is a story, an exertion, a lapse, a resurgence, an improvisation on the theme of creation. While we flash in an out of existence, barely blinking, they watch us come and they watch us go. These Rare Earth Elements are the timeless face of this old world.

Daniel Phill Springsummer Made in the spring and summer of 2017, this Springsummer series of paintings are abstracted interpretations of the natural world. This is an evolution of my reimagining of vegetation, flowers, and the landscape. Springsummer was painted together as a group, meant to hang as a whole or be viewed individually. Using color and emotional content, I wanted a sense of continuity to exist in this series. The gestures and marks found throughout my work are the result of a journey revealed in many layers. My images blend and melt into each other through the application of broad strokes and swaths of wet-into-wet paint. I aim to create paintings that are organic and unfolding, playing between the boundaries of abstraction and representation. My style has been said to have an “anarchic manner” and described as “unrehearsed expressionism.” Bill Scott, in Art in America Magazine, writes "Phill’s style in his current series of floral paintings owe a great debt to abstract expressionism's fluidity and improvisational process. Not a trace of angst or elegiac feeling is to be found in these calmly sinuous paintings. Phill composes his paintings at the same time that he tries to dissolve the representational element of his images to create what could be called premier-coup abstraction.”

Charles Stinson Devices of Dubious Utility

from the Museum of Post-Truth Artifacts These Devices of Dubious Utility are darkly whimsical observations about efforts (& non-efforts) to negotiate a world that demands yet refuses summarization in bite-sized slogans and media snippets. This ‘instant-on’ world of accelerating change flings aside its discards: Old tools, jobs they performed, people who used them -- all referenced in these assemblages cobbled together of found objects plus bamboo, wood, wire, hemp, paint and glue. The bases appear multi-layered and time-worn, as though each bears a fusty, future relic. ‘Distressed’ labels declare “Device for . . . “ some odd purpose; on backs are artist-signed certificates with title, ID number, “instructions” for use, and impressed logos of the fictitious “Museum of Post-Truth Artifacts.” The titles of these ‘future artifacts’ reference willfully twisted political disruptions of meaning, thought, and language: Spectacle trumps truth, and resulting turmoil distracts from vital, tenuously-sustained matters of nourishing food, clean air, water, health, peace, and respectful social discourse. In a sense, these Devices are my responses to an inner chorus of Dr. Seuss, Lewis Carroll, and George Orwell urging “think six dozen Alternative Facts each day before breakfast” – an essential tonic before the daily dose of confusion spun out by dysfunctional leaders of our body politic. Related prior works riffed on random tweaks of the near mathematical growth patterns of bamboo (Bamboo, 2015), on vision-memories of South Africa (Bamboo.2: Neo-Tribal Fetish Objects, 2016), and on contemplations of language with functional and nonfunctional handmade bamboo brushes (Brushes with Meaning, 2017). website: http://charlesstinson.com/ email: charlesstinson@me.com studio: 1890 Bryant St., Ste. 300, San Franciso CA 94110

Roadways, Tributaries, and Branches

With a background in scientific illustration, Melissa Wagner's work uses a variety of methods and media to engage the natural world. Melissa playfully composes her vision of a world that harnesses natural subjects to construct new models where art, earth, science, and wonder intersect. Melissa draws her inspiration from her love of nature and extensive local and global travels.

Roadways, Tributaries, and Branches overlays the mystery and magic of everyday images with texts and cartography, that invoke the act of looking forward: letting the lines and paths lead, taking a moment to observe and create one’s own narrative. - dedicated to Kathleen Shannon Sullivan Douglass

Polyps The primary focus of my work has been an investigation of form in the Natural World. My intensive explorations with porcelain clay have aspired to lend a clarity and beauty to the subtle complexities found in the process of life forms, with relationship to the cycles of existence. My continued interest in ecology and biological form has lent me to an investigation of Coral Reefs and the millions of tiny colonies of Polyps that make up these vast underwater landscapes. Coral Reefs are one of the wonders of the natural world. Protecting thousands of miles of shoreline from erosion, these intricate structures support biodiversity essential to the balance of the worlds ecosystems. They are one of Nature’s most significant and ancient infrastructures. Global warming and our overuse of the reefs is causing untold damage to these beautiful yet fragile formations. Through the use of Porcelain clay, and the inspiration of the tiny Polyps that slowly grow and lay down the supporting skeleton of the Coral Reefs, I have created a series of sculptural forms. These have developed and evolved in relation to one another, and portray both subtle and extreme changes in form and structure. Each of the sculptures tiny vessel forms are open as well as connected to one another to signify the hope and possibility of the process of rebuilding and growth.

In Plane Sight My work investigates pattern and its transformation through surface manipulation. Influenced by travel, architecture, the aesthetic traditions from Japan and the Arts and Crafts movement, my textile constructions showcase materiality using a variety of substrates and structural form created through a process of continual manipulation. The printed surface is where the manipulation starts. Photography plays an essential yet subtle role in my work. I capture imagery from daily life, various cultures and architecture to create my digitally manipulated textiles. Using techniques normally associated with fashion, such a pleating and smocking, I work meticulously by hand to create structure, which starts to morph the custom-made textile into new iterations. Once, again, I turn to the photographic process to rework the patterns and print the transformed textiles onto cloth before finally pleating and smocking into my textile constructions. The work in FourSquared has been inspired by flying, watching colors meld together into a blanket of tones as you rise higher above the earth. I set about creating abstract paintings, in a limited color palette to illustrate this patchwork. Once photographed I had the paintings digitally printed onto cloth, but these felt to busy for a collection. I revisited the paintings and honed in on my favorite areas of line and texture and created repeating patterns. Again these were all digitally printed onto cloth ready for manipulation with smocking. The Mizuhiki strings (Japanese paper ties) are something I like to use in my work to add depth and texture, for me they are a simple gesture like a drawn line. In each piece I’ve tried to give a sense of the different landscapes through shape, color and texture.
