11th Annual August 22 - October 10, 2020
Curator’s Statement
FourSquared 2020 is a unique exploration of the works of sixteen Bay Area artists. Each of the artists has produced sixteen small works, presented in sixteen clusters giving the audience the experience of sixteen micro solo exhibitions. All works are priced under $600. This 11th annual exhibition is a continuing reflection of the curator's strong and abiding interest in affordable art represented here by some of our most talented local artists.
Curator: Michael Yochum is founding partner of Arc Gallery & Studios. He has been active in the Bay Area art community for over 30 years and is a past chairman of ArtSpan. While his current day job is in the finance industry, his academic background, both undergraduate and graduate, is art history. The other partners, Priscilla Otani and Stephen Wagner, have also been involved in the curation of this iconic annual exhibition at Arc Gallery. Previous partner, Matthew Frederick, co-curated the first eight FourSquared exhibitions.

Mark Bauer HEADWAY Does mother nature care if humanity survives? Is it possible that our privileged human intellect can be used to save us yet, or will we continue to exploit our natural world to the point of no return? My art of using characterization facilitates a way for me to use humor and sarcasm to express my concerns for these thoughts. I personally avoid obvious direct comments or solutions but use images and titles to engage the viewer to question what it is about as it relates to our shared survival.

BLECHMEKI
Photo Tableaux The artist duo, BLECHMEKI (a portmanteau of their last names, Blechman and Umeki), takes mass-produced American pottery from the 1930’s through the 1980’s, and uses them to create their photographic tableaux. These pottery pieces were once common in homes all over the U.S. Sitting on mantels, book shelves and end tables, they were silent observers of everyday American household moments. And many now remain unseen in attics and storerooms as well, collecting dust. For many years, BLECHMEKI gathered these objects to photograph them by arranging the pieces together for the first time, thereby creating a new artful way of looking at them. At first glance, individual pieces of pottery, such as vases or figurines, look the same, but each piece is subtly different, not only in shapes and colors, but also in their provenance. By applying geometric composition protocols, the results transcend the commonplace to achieve a rare artistic simplicity. Even though all the photographs in this exhibition appear to be in black and white, they are actually shot in color — the pottery is in varying shades of white, off-white, cream, etc. Most other BLECHMEKI works are in the usual color-wheel spectrum.

Johnny Botts Happy, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise Imagine you’re on a space ship, looking out through a porthole from your protected surroundings as you explore different worlds. What would you like to see? This year, to take care of ourselves and improve our lives, my husband and I have adopted the mantra Happy, Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise, focusing on one of these words each week. These pieces illustrate what those concepts mean to me. My porthole series began with paintings on recycled commercial washer and dryer doors. I have expanded the series by adding circular portholes of different types and sizes.

I paint my signature-style robots focusing on themes of space, science, and play. With my art, I hope to get people in touch with their child-like wonder about the world. In my previous career, I was a “Rocket Scientist” designing equipment for space, which has
It is important to me that my art contains positive, uplifting imagery as a deliberate response to the surplus of negativity around us. I believe that what we pay attention to will grow, so I want to give people art that surrounds them with color, life, and joy.

Lexie Bouwsma Emotional Cereals There is something inherently personal about pouring oneself a bowl of cereal. It’s the first meal we prepared for ourselves. And cereal boxes scream at me, pulsating energy from the shelf. As a child, they kept me engaged with bright colors, wondrous creatures, and puzzles. As an adult, they offer me a sensible matte finish and the promise of a long and meditative life. Marketing plays subtly upon our aspirations and insecurities. This series imagines a sort of endgame marketing strategy where they finally say the quiet part loud. What would it mean to see your emotional world commodifed? What happens when our fear, embarrassment, and anxiety are sold back to us in sugar-frosted bites? My Emotional Cereals play with that idea, delving into and exploiting the built-up angst of their consumer.

Robin Denevan Local Shores The “shelter in place” restrictions have allowed significant, uninterrupted studio time. Because all commissions, exhibitions, fairs and studio visits are on hold I’ve had ample time to explore a new body of work. Though times are difficult and uncertain, it’s been a rare opportunity to delve into themes and techniques I’ve been practicing for two decades and create something entirely new. I started by revisiting images from my career, studying the effects of texture and atmosphere. With parks and borders closed, repurposing finished works reconnected me to nature and travels past. I recreated the textures of my decanted paintings by acid etching into steel and laser etching into birch. The wood provided an organic substrate that beautifully replicated the intricate reliefs I had created with decanted oil. I wanted the surfaces to be integral to their original images so I applied wax as thinly as possible to allow the images to be unadulterated. The wax in this case is not traditional encaustic but simply a means to soften the edges and prime the wood for oil. Ultimately these pieces branched into a greater exploration into color and oil techniques bringing me back to those early, joyful days of learning to paint.

Soad A. Kader Inner Worlds, Vibrant The works of Inner Worlds, Vibrant use color, texture and shape to reveal qualities of inner life as a call to see ourselves and each other more deeply, beyond our profiles. The more I wonder, the more I love. ~Alice Walker I make collages with cutouts from the printed profile photographs I capture including a multitude of different people’s hair, clothes and backgrounds. I photograph and edit my collage then print on wood to incorporate the natural grain of the wood panel in the final artwork. My process uses a combination of both analog and digital technologies that peek into a layered and textured topography of our interior lives. Artworks hung together with some similar collaged pieces show that while we are each unique, we are also interconnected. The choice to love is a choice to connect--- to find ourselves in the other. ~bell hooks

I always want to be by the window. I love looking out - seeing and feeling different types of space, especially the change of perspective looking down, like when I am on a rooftop or in an airplane. The surprise, mystery, or wonder at what I am observing intrigues me, peaks my curiosity. It isn’t always important to know what it is I am looking at at first. I enjoy that time in between, the ambiguity and call to look more closely to delight in the details and abstract qualities and to being present. Noticing colors, textures, lines, shapes, character of light or movement allows me to linger in wonder. With layered acrylic inks and marks and textures made with pen, pencil, paper, textile, I explore changing points of view to express that connection, pleasure and learning we can take in the everyday experience of looking and seeing or listening and hearing anew. I grew up with my Egyptian Muslim father and with my Basque-Italian-American Catholic mother, first in Egypt, and then in California. The mix they created in coming together continues to inform my identity and influence my explorations and perspectives. I wanted to change my name to Susan when I was eight so I could blend in more easily in my new home. My parents said no. I am now proud of my multi-mixed heritage and experiences and am grateful for that no. Living in the in-between and the process of becoming comfortable in my skin and in my being helped me gain confidence to express myself in all my color sharing my unique vantage point and continued pursuit for varied perspectives and deeper understanding. Crystal Kamoroff The Petite Unclassifiables It is certain I have not arrived. I assure you, there is no beginning, and I am not afraid. No absolute, no linear, no successive, no sequential, no. A spiral of unquantifiable beginnings, beginning again and again beginning‌ Divinity, madness, reason, purpose and manipulation of vibrant matter, irrefutable existence. “Godâ€? and the strange places one finds her, in consciousness and exaltation. Reality lying above the given reality, a suspension of distinctions. Brains are dulled by the incurable mania of wanting to make the unknown known, classifiable - Marcel Proust. But the senses connect a person both to the present and past, can span time, time travel. The senses, like a bridge, connect us more fully than ideas. Tearing apart reality and reassembling the pieces into something meaningful. Fragments translating into planes, a sensory, a drawing, an object an atmosphere. I create art to enhance these, the senses and to add sensation to a world brimming with beauty and terror.

Sasinun Kladpetch Wall I think of my installations as a self-portrait and a reflection of how the environment has impressed me. I have been experimenting with materials such as clay, soil, plaster, concrete, plants etc. My works has involved the creation of conceptuality based on natural materials and installation. I decide to use raw materials collaborate with human-made materials to show the coherence of beauty. I would like to engage the audience to think about issues of nature living through my work and hope that the audience will be appreciative the beauty of nature more than they were before.

Linda Larson Portals Falling stars are an obsession with me. It’s also kind of a secret, an enthrallment to be fortunate to see one cross the sky, a magical moment to witness that vestige of light from the stars. Portal continues the exploration of a paintng I completed at the end of 2019 called Path to the Fallen Stars in which I tried to capture this afterlife of the star—its interstitial pathway between dark and light, other worlds and myself. At the time, before any of us had a clue of the darkness of the pandemic ahead, I felt this work to be a positive representation of my wild hopes and possibilities for the year ahead. The process of making that painting and the forces behind it inspired this new series— my way to keep observing a constant creative vigil.

Katja Leibenath Figurative Studies My paintings are figurative abstractions of either the human form or a specific place. I work from my own source material- photographs, sketches and plein air renderings of things I see on my travels. I translate this material into oil paintings over the course of many months in my studio. During the painting process the original object becomes obscured and less important, allowing something new and separate to emerge. The final painting is a record of my relationship to the process of painting itself, and marks the moment where subject becomes object and is ready for connection with the viewer. Originally from Germany with a background in architecture and art, I have been painting in San Francisco since 2006. My work is part of public and private collections internationally and has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Atlanta, in addition to San Francisco.

Golbanou Moghaddas The Hoopoe's Diligence Over the past two years I’ve been developing a body of miniature etchings inspired by Persian Literature and Poetry. The compositions and imagery are inspired by the manuscripts of the 17th century Safavid Dynasty in Iran. For this exhibition I’ve created sixteen etchings corresponding to Attar’s 11th century The Conference of the Birds. Hoopoe, a significant leading bird from Attar’s book, is a reoccurring figure in most my images. The Hoopoe enticed all the birds to embark on a journey to meet Simorgh, a fantastical bird representing perfection. Hoopoe and the birds became one along the way, realizing that what they were searching for was unity. I’m calling on Hoopoe to make a comeback and offer its leadership in the unstable world of today. While some animals are randomly picked, others were seen around my studio in Marin Headlands. Each piece is framed off-centered to emphasize the unconventional layout of the authentic miniatures. There’s an indisputable perfection in the execution of the manuscripts. My effort in the transplantation of the patterns, poetry and imagery aims to create an interweaving conversation between all of the pieces that traditionally stand alone in the manuscript.

Sean O’ Donnell Seduced by Syncopation “Music is not the notes, but the silence between.” Claude Debussy The rhythmic sound of a metronome might remind some of after school piano lessons on a hard wood piano bench. My childhood memories are of being hypnotized by the elegant simplicity of a wind-up device that could make so many different tempos. My goal in creating these sculptures, was to pair a metronome and the material it’s mounted on so that each piece produced a unique sound. For example, the hollow resonance of a violin body is acoustically distinct from the soulful echo of a brass cymbal. Our Bay Area flea markets provided me with all the instruments and metronomes used in this series. I have restored the metronome springs and gears giving them a renewed voice so once again, they can make their magic sounds and get our toes-a-tapping.

Sean O’Donnell is a San Francisco-based assemblage artist and sculptor. The found objects used in his art evoke melancholy and impermanence that upon a closer look, may reveal a hint of an unknown past. Rik Olson Bugs and Birds An Artist takes an idea, a concept, a landscape, a fleeting thought or glimpse of an inspiration and attempts to convert it to a visual tangible form that can be shared. That final visual form is filtered through the artist’s training, lifetime skills, inner vision and unique experiences. Sometimes it pulls together and sometimes it blows apart. But we are driven to keep trying, to give it content and form. From my first art award in the third grade to graduating from CCAC, to living, studying and teaching in Europe and the USA, I have tried to further develop my skills and vision. My subject can go from whimsical to serious. Sometimes it is hard to reign it in.

Carrie Ann Plank
Deconstructed GIF Single Cell Series The major focus of my work deals with visual portrayals of information systems. The work considers reinterpreting and reorganizing visual information systems and how context shifts meaning. I've always been fascinated by how principal and equation can be visually rendered and how this translation impacts the comprehension of data - be it obfuscation or clarification. I work with many layers of data visualization, from charting to mathematical equations to scientific principles. Mapping, numerical sequences, fractals, wave patterns, sound sources, magnetic field variations and other systems of scientific observation, overlay one another to create a pastiche of information visualization. I'm interested in the resulting noise of these visual systems, be it organically or theoretically derived, and how they interact. Layers overlap and interfere while creating abstraction from the concrete.

Mark D. Powers Gallery Nocturnes This series is both figurative and architectural, and continues my newly embarked realism-painting journey. In late 2019 I began photographing dozens of gallery openings, focusing on the essence of spaces and the energy of crowds. The 2020 Pandemic hit the world and many would-be openings were cancelled. So, this series includes a couple of galleries with no people, and a borrowed indoor image from a favorite gallery. These are businesses I adore, places with cool energy, or galleries where I can envision my work on display, enticing new collectors.

While he was still a young military officer in 1991, self-taught artist Mark D. Powers showed (and sold) his first work at a Washington DC gallery. He continued to show and sell work throughout the 1990s. While living in Detroit, Mark was a member and officer of Artist’s Cooperative (ACT), a decade’s old non-profit artist group that operated a gallery space and hosted the annual International Detroit Salon Show. A career in real estate development brought Mark to the SF Bay Area. He ultimately retired from that industry, and for nearly a decade made art and helped produce adult films. Since 2018 Mark has produced paintings, drawings, and assemblage full-time from his studio in San Francisco. Victoria Veedell Paths and Waterways Places have a memory, a history, a feel that we connect with. These memories, like faint echoes, are revealed as light moves across the landscape, transforming the color and texture of a place. It is these moments and experiences that I capture in my atmospheric landscape paintings. For this series, I wanted to stay close to home taking note of the beauty while on my daily walks through the city parks or around my favorite coastal spots. These paintings trace the effect light has on a location, how it leaves its mark on the landscape, how it illuminates the essence of nature -creating different moods, transforming a scene, drawing us in, focusing our gaze, changing the temperature physically and emotionally, and capturing movement. Combined, these elements seek to communicate the feeling and memories of a place. My paintings are a snapshot of a particular moment in time. Recording these moments is an act of resistance documenting places that are threatened by increased urbanization and catastrophic climate change. They are a call to preserve these places and a reminder of the important symbiotic relationship that we have with nature.
