John Arbuckle The Meaning of Flowers The FourSquared exhibition has given me the opportunity to express the many symbols that flowers have represented for centuries in 16 paintings. Throughout time flowers have had a significant meaning spiritually and emotionally to all cultures. With watercolor and gouache in a realist style, I’ve chosen to paint passion, purity, joy, hope, love, wisdom, innocence and more. Through this series, I hope bring the optimistic human experience alive.

Lisa Congdon Planet Hunters 1 I am an artist who is has always been interested in the shapes of the things I paint and the relationship of those shapes to other shapes and to the negative space on the canvas. This collection of small abstract paintings explores tension in space. In literal “outer space fiery balls play with and against each other to create energy and movement through gravitational pull. Regularly planets blow up because they cannot handle the pull of their suns. The planet PH1 (an acryonym for Planet Hunters 1) is an exception. It has so many different gravitational pulls swirling around it that scientists are still amazed it hasn’t imploded. PH1 is helping scientists understand how planets form and find stable orbits even in hostile environments. This series of sixteen small paintings is my own attempt to create dynamic and stable energy in space.

Monica and Robin Denevan Body and Steel Body and Steel is a collaboration between painter Robin Denevan, known for his luminous, encaustic landscapes and photographer Monica Denevan, whose black and white prints of Burma and China have been exhibited internationally. The theme of this project is The Elusive Figure. Using Monica’s diverse negatives of dancers from SF Ballet, fitness instructors, and fishermen from Burma, this series celebrates the universal quality of the strong, expressive figure. These one of-a-kind, non-digital pieces use light-sensitive emulsion and traditional darkroom processes, and are printed into 20 gage, etched steel with incredible effect. Robin prepares and distresses the metal, and applies nuanced glazes of oil to accentuate the timeless nature of the subject. The plates are coated with resin to protect the surface and transform the image into a tangible object: part painting, part photograph, part sculpture. All sixteen works are mounted magnetically and can be interchanged. Rebecca Fox Surface Studies This series is an exploration of textures and repeated shapes and patterns that are slightly skewed and altered from one micro study to the next. My goal was to create a cohesive series where each piece stands on its own, but overall has a sense of unity and connection to the other pieces. At first glance, the viewer can identify the connections between the sixteen pieces because of the material, the shape, and how one piece plays off the other, with the carefully repeated patterns and forms. Then, the pieces invite the viewer to come closer, to really examine and inspect all the little intricacies involved. The circle, which can be found in most of my work, suggests thoughts of continuity and continuousness. In my work I push boundaries of the material by changing how metal is typically viewed as a hard heavy material and translate it into a lighter more delicate appearing material.

Joseph Kowalczyk Beside the Mask We Make When I was a child around the age of 6 or so, I remember one day my father began repainting the interior walls of our home. Upon starting my room with paint roller in hand, he jokingly painted a great big smiley face on my wall… directly over my bed. It terrified me! I’m not sure why it scared me so much. The smiley face had no personality, no portrayal of maliciousness; it was just two rectangles above a simple smile. After seeing how I felt, my father immediately painted over it, but STILL I was scared. I knew that although the face was covered, that giant smile was still there, hiding underneath this new layer of paint. Over 20 years later I still remember the event vividly, and I find it fascinating. The fear obviously wasn’t based on any legitimate threat. The fear was completely inside my head. I can’t help but to consider the fears I hold today and how they might influence my decisions. It brings me to question, which fears are legitimate, and which ones are just smiley faces. And furthermore, how did they get there?” “Wearing a mask to impress others. - If the face you always show the world is a mask, someday there will be nothing beneath it. Because if you spend too much time focusing on other people’s perception of you, or who everyone else expects you to be, you can eventually forget who you really are. So don’t fear the judgments of others; you don’t have to be perfect to impress and inspire people. Strive to be who you are and what’s true to you. We all have imperfections; inspiration and awe will come from how you deal with those flaws.” 30 May, 2014, “The Mind Unleashed” FM Studios 483 25th Street Oakland, CA. 94612 510-601-5053 studiojoko@gmail.com http://www.joko.us

Peter Tonningsen and Lisa Levine Counterpoint Drawing inspiration from a musical notion in which two voices that sound and move independently coalesce to create a more elaborate and harmonious music, Counterpoint is a collaborative photo-based project pushing the limitations of a singular vision towards a more fluid and complex perspective by interweaving two creative voices. This project is essentially a visual conversation intended to redefine the boundaries of authorship and the photographic document while creating a novel approach to defining landscape that moves beyond what either artist can do individually. Beginning with a single roll of film, one artist photographs various scenes throughout a specific landscape. The film is then rewound, exchanged with the other artist to duplicate this process, with this exchange repeated multiple times, eventually creating a surprising and complexly layered document of that place. The multiple exposed films are scanned in sections of consecutive frames, the artists digitally extract discrete scenes from these sections, and then those scenes are reworked to accentuate selected formal and contextual components. This unique synthesis between digital and analog technologies relies on the distinctive characteristics and possibilities of each, yet also unites them into an aesthetically imaginative and innovative form. Opposing the singularity and clarity of conventional direct photographic representation, and embracing the serendipitous wonder of this atypical process, the resulting photographs are visually rich and highly complex compositions that describe a creative interchange composed of fragments of information, time, and space. Such interpretive photographs are no longer picture perfect portals into reality, but now depict a multidimensional perspective that expands our notions of the photographic instant and reorders the appearance of photographic space. This approach allows the artists to convey a blending of visions where the individual and editorial narrative is replaced by a vitality and intricately textural expression commensurate with musical counterpoint.

Saundra U. McPherson Trace The work of San Francisco painter Saundra McPherson is driven by a fascination with the processes that shape both the natural and human environment. Her work is process driven, working with the physicality and immediacy of her materials and applying dozens of layers of semi-transparent pigments and mediums. The process is intuitive and allows for unanticipated outcomes. Taking shape over time, the work is built, in a balance between intention and surprise, order and chaos. Surface is an all-important element, revealing a history of materials and forces visible beneath the finished one. Trace was inspired by daily urban walks, where she found marks left by the human hand: skateboard, spills, bicycle or car tire. Marks were everywhere, unintentionally made and left by human interaction with the urban environment: curbs, buildings, walls, bus stops, freeway barriers, tollbooths. She began to reconsider the hand in her work: why it is not present, and why and how it might appear. Looking to Cy Twombly’s history of work and interviews for insight, gesture found its way into the work, the marks revealing, raw, energetic, refined and coarse. These marks represent the hand of the artist returning to a body of work. The Trace paintings are a glance at a life, or an urban wall, in any given moment, a snapshot of that narrative captured in time. The marks have a rhythm, a pattern, where they join to form pattern or fly off the canvas. They are smears, scars, streaks dragged, scraped, sometimes arcing across a surface – marks coloring an urban canvas. These gestures are largely allowed to happen, to gather in groups or stand alone, to be sanded back or glazed over. As are the marks left inadvertently in the urban landscape. What’s left is Trace: a narrative of marks, lives, left behind. http://sumcpherson.com/

Howard Munson Compositions These collages are from my experimenting with one large collage and searching out interesting possibilities for compositions in form, color and texture. Then, those areas were removed as completed works. For the past ten years I have used the book structure for my art. Prior to that I was a printmaker for twenty years. Those were the years of abstract works and conceptual art which led me into the book format to express my ideas. My inspiration for artist books and collage work comes from my frequent visits to Japan and Mexico. I continue to work with collage, sumi ink, photography and now pursuing video art.

Miwako Nishizawa 16 Views of Mt. Tam Rendering a landscape is for me a rendering of a time rather than a place. With “FourSquared, I chose 4 different Mt. Tamalpais vantage points views from Berkeley, from Oakland, from San Anselmo and from Fairfax. Then, I created 4 different versions of each of those views. Mt. Tam is a gift, providing me with an endlessly rich vocabulary. English is my second language and it can be an awkward tool for dialogue. Japanese woodblock is the language that I prefer to employ. It is a more comfortable way for me to share my thoughts. It requires patience and precision while, at the same time, it demands decisiveness and boldness. The technique is difficult to master. But once you are comfortable with the process, there is an endlessly rich vocabulary at your disposal.

Sawyer Rose Hothouse California is big and bold. Our rugged landscape is home to a profusion of native plants whose forms are both brash and beautiful. The works in this series are a tribute to the grandeur-- even, extravagance-- of the species that share these lands with us. The exuberant beauties in this hothouse aren’t content to sit still. Captured in a fleeting moment of calm, their glowing auras remain in motion. Asking these bold forms to sit nicely on a square panel was out of the question. Silvery, textured, radiant—these California natives shine with all the vitality of the majestic West.

Tim Svenonius Four Movements In this series, I aimed to capture the essence of remembered images, which through erosion or dissolution become unfixed from place or time. Each cycle shows a passage of figures through a landscape, rendered indistinctly as if through a haze of distance and time, belonging to no particular place or century. While landscape paintings may purport to show something timeless or eternal, figures in the landscape point to vanishing moments in time. I wanted to render the landscape as fluid, ebbing in imperceptibly slow waves. Against this backdrop of geological time are the ripples of human habitation, a perpetual crisscrossing of the world’s surfaces in endless migratory waves. The background of each painting was built up over time, layer upon layer, much like geological strata; The figures appeared late in the process, as though fleeting and impermanent. Four Movements reflects on an intersection between these distinct scales of time: the age of the earth; the age of humankind; and time as we experience it, through the lens of memory. The motif of figures crossing a landscape is one I return to again and again, for reasons mysterious even to me. The grid format presented a unique challenge to construct these scenes unfolding across multiple panels. I took it as an opportunity to create constellations of figures and forms to play against one another, much like variations on a theme in music. I divided the grid into four registers, like staves; and just as a musical composition can tap into our emotions directly, bypassing meaning and narrative, these paintings give themselves more to feeling than deciphering.

Kirsten Tradowsky Intersections Walking the Bay Area city streets, historic theaters and buildings glow. Around every corner, new faces and movements in passing. Across the bay, ships and rooftops prance in shifting shades. I’m constantly inspired by these intersections of ever-changing moments. To mimic the dynamic landscape of this symphonic cityscape, the paintings in my series can be switched around and rearranged, or taken to stand on their own.

Truong Tran An Imperfect World On days when I am not working as a poet and teacher, I try to wake up early. I empty my oversized messenger bag of books and papers and the previous day’s half-eaten lunch. I place the strap over my left shoulder, with the bag firmly secured to my back. I begin to walk. I walk for as long as it takes to fill the bag with stuff: branches, findings from the local thrift stores, choice items left in boxes on sidewalks and, if I’m lucky, something I’ve never seen before. Once the bag is filled, I return to my studio, empty the contents from the bag, creating mounds of what some might consider piles of junk. I see them as source materials and the beginnings to my art making process. I am committed to using these recycled materials as an environmentally conscious artist but also as an artist who strives to make art accessible through both its practice and use of materials. Quite frankly, I get a kick out of forcing these disparate objects to come together, compromising and accommodating one another in their process of becoming something new, something beautiful. I refer to what I do as art making because I do not paint, draw or sculpt in a traditional or learned consideration of artistic craft. My craft is founded in the doing. I glue things together. I make things fit. I cut. I build. I weave. I think. I stare at things in hopes that these things will talk back to me. This is what I do. It makes me happy. It allows me to lose myself in the process of doing. It makes me sad. It allows me to find myself in the process of seeing.

Heather Wilcoxon Memories Over the years I have filled numerous books with hundreds of drawings that reflect how I see and feel about the world around me. These sixteen mix medium pieces are an assemblage of these visual dairies. I picked the images randomly and re-worked by adding more layers to their visual impact. This colorful cast of characters comments on our concerns, fears, worries as well as our brutality towards one another. I view the world as a dangerous place. However, I am seasoned enough to see the absurdity of it all. My cartoon figures capture both comedy and the tragedy of humanity in my childlike iconography. These characters embody a sense of innocent playfulness. Yet, in their monstrous rendering, a dark humor is reflected. The pleasing colors, pretty surfaces, and childlike imagery lure the viewer into a disjointed narrative that quickly turns ugly, mean and nasty.

Jan Wurm Keeping Score FourSquared is a system, it forms a neat package. And just as this order is imposed, these men on their squared off panels are busy ordering things: a progression from T-ing off to the final putt, from shuffling the deck to the last card dealt, from the first cast to the last catch reeled in, even from the first draft to the dregs. Everything is counted, measured, ranked. How we keep score in sport or war is a numbers game that tallies with our views of conquest and mastering. It also permeates our relationship to food and drink and even sexual conquest. Somehow we are always keeping score and trying to find order in our lives. Through all these routines, the men, however, remain isolated and alone on their circumscribed square.
