About the Juror Jen Tough, Jen Tough Gallery, Benicia, CA Jen Tough is the owner and Director of Jen Tough Gallery in the historic Benicia Arsenal in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Jen Tough Gallery programs includes emerging and mid-career artists, focusing primarily on abstraction and/or experimental mediums, both accessible and intellectually provocative. Jen has a BFA (honors) in fine arts from The Ohio State University, attended The Art Academy of Cincinnati for fine art foundation, and Parsons School of Design/The New School program in West Africa. Originally from Ohio, but for over 20 years based primarily in Los Angeles, Jen worked as an award-winning graphic designer and art director. She was the Art Director for Warner Bros Records, Urban Outfitters (Philadelphia), Hollywood Records (Disney) and numerous national magazines where her design style earned her several awards and the title of "one to watch" for the 2000's. Her extensive freelance work included dozens of projects for comedian Drew Carey over a span of 20 years, as well as being a creative consultant for Nike, where she art directed retail focused campaigns for new product launches. https://jentough.gallery

Juror Statement The show's theme, "fragments", has been running through my mind since I was asked to be the juror for this show. Given the current state of affairs that terrify many of us daily, and on the eve of the election with a pandemic and fires raging in the west, I struggle to look at the theme "fragments" through an optimistic lens. Fragments speak of something broken, discarded, or apart from the whole. And I can think of no better metaphor for how so many of us have been feeling the last few years. So it was no surprise that many of the submissions had similar associations, with work that reflected our fractured political and cultural climate. But alongside this work, was an undercurrent of wanting to fix or repair, as reflected in the multiple references to Kintsugi—the ancient Japanese art of repairing objects using gold. Perhaps this is the silver lining (or line of gold) to embrace amongst the fragments. We can hope to be re-assembled. More beautiful and stronger than before.
