The artist duo, BLECHMEKI (a portmanteau of their last names, Blechman and Umeki), takes mass-produced American pottery from the 1930’s through the 1980’s, and uses them to create their photographic tableaux. These pottery pieces were once common in homes all over the U.S. Sitting on mantels, book shelves and end tables, they were silent observers of everyday American household moments. And many now remain unseen in attics and storerooms as well, collecting dust. For many years, BLECHMEKI gathered these objects to photograph them by arranging the pieces together for the first time, thereby creating a new artful way of looking at them.
