Curator’s Statement
SquaredAlumni 2020 brings together six of the most popular alumni from previous FourSquared exhibitions at Arc. Each artist will be exhibiting four works. The exhibition is a reflection of the Arc partners’ strong and abiding interest in supporting San Francisco Bay Area art, artists and community. During fundraisers and special events, Arc will be matching donations by collectors to Bay Area Non-Profit organizations with a discount of up to 20% on all artwork purchased. Curator: Michael Yochum is the co-founder of Arc Gallery & Studios, along with partners, Priscilla Otani and Stephen Wagner. He is also the managing partner for Arc Fine Arts Consulting, which has a singular focus of connecting local businesses and collectors with SF Bay Area artists.

Audrey Heller Linger - Rose Garden Through my Linger series I try to convey the feeling of sea, sky, and mountains – breathing deeply, listening to wind and waves, allowing myself to get lost in the vastness of nature. But these last months, my world has been confined. With travel forbidden, parks closed, and “lingering” on the beach frowned upon, I was feeling claustrophobic. I covered the same ground, a small radius from my house, over and over again. At first, the Berkeley Rose Garden was just a destination. It made a decent target to walk up the hill and back. I rarely went in. I wasn’t a fan of roses. I thought they were too cliché and they made me sneeze. But one day a particular bud on the “Peace” rose caught my attention. I started visiting it as it grew round and color started peeking out. I imagined that it was a sign that the tide of the epidemic was turning. It wasn’t. The rose bloomed anyway, faded, dried and dropped. By then there was another bud to focus on, and then another. And I found that by slowing down, tracking tiny changes, watching the growth, and rooting for flowers, I had lingered long enough to find the vastness that I need, close to home.

Social Distancing: Then and Now Today’s uncertain times leave us with a sense of isolation. In this age of Pandemic, as in the post war times of my canvasses, many children may feel alone and separated from their friends. In their questioning and curiosity for some understanding, their young spirit allows them to adapt to the changes around them, and they seem to look at the world with a vibrant sense of hope and resilience.

Howard Hersh Apart. Not Alone. While I specifically made this piece for the SquaredAlumni exhibit, the event coincided with the oncoming pandemic. As it has affected our lives so dramatically, it’s no surprise that my piece would reflect our current situation. Accordingly, its title is Apart. Not Alone.

Alan Mazzetti Shadow Play These paintings were created in the last three months for this exhibition. They combine my favorite subject – The City – with one of the most elemental themes in Art: the passage of time. The continuous transition and often frenetic pace of city life is evident when we see new next to old, when offices become homes, when institutions expand. By depicting shadows on these spaces where so many people live, work and play, I was able to slow that down, reminding us that life is lived day by day, hour by hour.

Silvia Poloto Invented Identities These pieces evoke classic paintings. They are transformed by printing them on aluminum which gives them a massive and ancestral feel, even at this small scale. They transcend classics to become dream daguerreotypes. We relate to these women and their invented identities as if they are images of women we knew, our creative grandmothers.

Marcia Stuermer In Corona Times - Lightness From The Dark I’m a San Francisco mixed media artist that uses translucent resin as my primary medium in combination with unexpected elements to sample moments in time. I’m constantly experimenting with alchemic transformations of the resin to convert the commonplace to the sublime; create surprise, wonder, and unforeseen beauty; and instill environmental and societal concerns as impassioned subtexts. Aesthetically and/or conceptually, my work is driven by my fascination with scientific inquiry related to the natural, chemical, technological and biological worlds; the underpinnings of which I feel have a poignant relevance to our contemporary milieu. In this new series, created during and colored by the Covid19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests and the hugely divisive sociopolitical environment, I’ve used inky black, highly polished hand-cast resin with botanical embedments and ethereal surface drawings to contrast the mood of the times with hopes for the future.
