LOCATION

San Miguel, Mexico

AREA

2750 m2

Architecture is not only aim to merely satisfy the basic functional needs but also can change and enhance humans’ life. The client of the residence is a couple of American artist with 2 children. The residence could provide the family with spaces and platforms to merge into local culture and society.

The site of the residence is located in the central historical preservation zone of San Miguel. The west of the site is an one-way street and the west side of the site is a public parking lot. The total area if the site is 407.82 m2. (Approximate 4388.14 SF)

1st Floor Plan

The context is generated by the surrounding buildings with enclosed yards and well ordered arrangement. So we introduce yards in to the design to match the texture of the city. What’s more, the yards would improve the ventilation of the building.

LOCATION

Historical Downtown of Jinan

AREA

Architecture can never been isolated from its specific context. As to this library design, an interaction between architecture and urban space is generated from texture, materials, proportion and scale, so the dialogue between architecture and the city could be established.

Urban Spaces in Architecture

Shandong Province

As the capital city of the hometown of Confucius, Jinan owns abundant historical culture and there is a strong atmosphere of Confucian and traditional Chinese culture in this city. Meanwhile, the unique geological construction allows this city to develop with the distribution of spring.

Jinan

Old Downtown Area

The exterior spaces of the building inherit the proportion and scale of the one of the traditional downtown area. So it would be familiar to native residents when they walk through the library.

The texture of the traditional down town area is generated by the courtyard which is enclosed by residence and the organized combination with order. Meanwhile, the contexts of the site are all traditional residence with small scale. So the design break the large volume of libraries to generate streets, courtyards and square to match the spaces and texture of the city.

The site is located in a new area of the city. The large scale urban planning makes the city lose the basic images of city. The boundaries among architecture, landscape and urban spaces are broken in this complex to create the spaces with city image for public activities.

Shandong Province, China

Zhanhua is located in the north part of China. It account the significant position of the delta of Yellow River and the coast of Bohai.

SITE

The original planning create urban spaces with large scale; however, it is not a humanized space for public. There is no space for people to stay for relaxing and to organize public cultural activities.

SITE

The design proposal starts from the images of cities. The texture of floor planning is inspired by the form of salt pan. The buildings expand from the square in the center and are connected with canopy, street and yards.

Taken the context in to consideration, the stadium was set on the east of the site and there is an open space as the main entrance to extend the landscape. So the buildings are uniformed with urban spaces.

The sports building are designed as a whole union, so some functional spaces can be shared and it will be cost-effective on spaces.

The cultural buildings are arranged along the south side of the site to generate a rhythmic facade for urban spaces.

The elements of native architecture are merged into the design.

As to a building with small scale, the special character of local residence are taken consideration into the design to adapt the local climate.

The proportion and scale of lanes are also taken as the reference in

Based on the hot weather in day time, gray spaces, which is the transition between exterior spaces and interior spaces, are introduced into design to create relative cooler space for outdoor activities.

The native material such as bricks, woods and white paint are applied on the building.

We engaged in allowing the building to be a part of native culture and social life. The form of the windows are inspired by the form of local residence and would be easily recognized by native residents. White in Islam represent elegant and beautiful stuff. So this color are applied on the facade of the building to convey a positive social life attitude to public.

The local climate changes a lot from day to night. In daytime, it is very hot; however, it is also very cold in winter. The abundant solar energy is taken advantage by solar house. The solar house prevent the heat to go into room in day time and also to lower the heat and cooling exchange to preserve heat in night. It would extremely enhance the interior condition for using.
