Background Research Penn State Behrend campus is located just east of Erie, PA. The campus is 854 acres, with 50plus buildings. Currently there are 9 different housing options all located on the southern side of campus. The existing Ohio and Almy halls were originally part of a three building housing group planned for the west edge of the campus. Trippe Hall is now considered to be to be the third building in the grouping.

These are 2 options for bedroom layout. We wanted to keep Dobbins Hallthe flooring natural and warm so we picked hardwood flooring. It is also easier for those in wheelchairs.

Structural Analysis

Dobbins Hall

Since Penn State Behrend is looking for getting the TRIPPLE Hall project ready by the next school year, steel structural system with shear walls for the stairs and the elevators is preferred for this project because it’s more sustainable than concrete, cheaper, and faster to build. The main reason that the steel structural system will be more sustainable and cheaper to ship to the site, is the fact that there are a lot of steel fabricators around the area in comparison to only one concrete fabricator which is specified only in the side walks and driveways work more than an entire structural system (as shown in the map above).

System Integration

Dobbins Hall

The mechanical system used for this project is a geothermal system, which was preferred with the intentions to save money. Another reason for choosing this system is to take an advantage of the geothermal wells that are already in place within the site itself. In terms of distribution, VAV boxes will be attached with reheat coil in order to be able to provide part loads.

Lighting Design

The South faรงade requires the most attention in terms of shading systems because of the large amount of daylight that is penetrating.

Diffused light from the sky enters the building through skylights and windows surrounding the building, while keeping out direct light from the sun to prevent heat gain and glare. To help minimize this solar heat gain, large overhangs and low-e glass material are added to provide both an architectural aesthetic element and a solar heat presentation component.

Site Logistics

Adequate pedestrian flow and traffic flow are a main concern. Designing our entrance to the north for high pedestrian flow. Inviting oncoming pedestrian into our central fireplace. While allowing smooth progression of vehicles around our building.

Detailed Cost Analysis The Initial cost analysis began at just over 15.5 million dollars. As we added a multitude of other required amenities the price increased over the 25 million dollar budget shown below. The price increased over budget due to the stone façade, exterior curtain wall sections, and the doubling of 2 layers of 5/8â€? gypsum wall board along the interior partition walls.

Spring 2016

Summary Throughout this semester, the design of our building has evolved. Being inspired with the ski lodge concept we thought about focusing on interior finishes and ‌ One of the biggest chanllenges we faced as a team was trying to sell the hallways to the client through renderings and explanaitions we tried to show that opening up the hallways was worth spending money on it, the extra structure and mechanical desing as well. We were successful in showing how the hallways bring in natural light to the building throughout the day and in showing how it breaks up the boring feeling of the long normal hallways by introducing a small study area and seating for the residents to enjoy the view of the forest and have a close by space to relax in. With all of this being said, we did end up happy with the final design.
