Letter from the

President

Friends, As I write this note, the first COVID-19 vaccination is being administered in the United States. Staring into the dark months of winter, we now see a speck of light and hope at the end of that proverbial tunnel. I am pleased to share Archbishop Spalding High School’s Annual Report for 2019-2020. The support and generosity of friends and strangers offered not only hope during this unprecedented time, but also enabled Archbishop Spalding to convert challenges into opportunities. We completed the ClearEdge Innovation Center in time for the opening of this school year despite COVID-19. The opportunities and advantages that this teaching/learning environment offers our students will only further differentiate their skill sets. The Center houses the Project Lead the Way engineering and cybersecurity programs, and the Edward St. John Foundation Maker Space outfitted with every kind of 3D printer, band saw, and laser cutter. The school’s nationally recognized FIRST Robotics team is ready for the 2021 build challenge and prepared to work collaboratively and physically distanced! During the spring and summer months, Spalding’s COVID Reopening Committee worked nonstop to ensure that we could safely welcome students to campus. Spaces were reimagined and repurposed. Ventilation throughout the building was improved and cleaning protocols were upgraded. Teachers collaborated on what had worked during the sudden spring transition to distance learning and what had not. The planning efforts involved to return over 1200 students to campus in a hybrid model were daunting. Despite the hurdles faced during the first weeks of school, our doors are still open, and yesterday, there were students and staff walking around as elves, Santa and Mrs. Claus and quite a few reindeer! This community we call Archbishop Spalding High School is a special place. The school’s motto, “One in Christ”, is lived every single day. Teachers supporting students, students supporting each other, colleagues supporting colleagues and parents lending a helping hand wherever needed. We are blessed and incredibly grateful. COVID-19 will end. We will, eventually, resume daily activities and return to whatever normal may resemble. Until then, let’s hold on to each other through faith, kindness, and prayer. Last Spring, 292 seniors graduated from Archbishop Spalding thanks to your support. They did not have a graduation ceremony at the Cathedral of Mary our Queen, nor did they have some of the other traditional senior events. They learned to adapt, kept their heads raised high and are now onto the next chapter of their lives. We know they will make us proud as they continue to grow and learn.

Service

A requirement for graduation is 60 hours of community service, with a minimum of 25 outreach hours. Service is an important part of a student’s journey at Spalding. We ask our students to enter into charity and emerge with questions, and hopefully solutions, for a just and better world. Even though a lot of service opportunities were restricted by COVID-19, that didn’t stop members of the Class of 2020 from surpassing their goal. The class as a whole served 29,456 hours. 76 of them served over 100 hours, 35 served over 200 hours, 5 served over 300 hours, 2 served over 400 hours and 1 served over 800 hours!

How to Make Your Gift to Archbishop Spalding Parents, alumni and friends often ask how they can support The Spalding Fund and how their contributions benefit the students. A wide range of giving options with possible tax benefits are available. Gifts may be tailored to express the donor’s interest. The Office of Advancement is available to discuss these possibilities with you.

Appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds can be donated to Spalding and may be deducted at full market value on the date of transfer.

Gifts of cash may be made in a single payment or pledged with multiple payments throughout the school’s fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. Cash gifts may be paid by either personal check or charging the contribution through your Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover card.

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. To find out if your company matches, you may use the search tool available on our website. Then simply follow the set procedure that your company provides, and Archbishop Spalding High School will be happy to assist. The impact of your gift may be doubled or even tripled. Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

Planned Gifts One easy and effective way to have a big impact on Spalding’s future, without feeling the big impact on your checkbook NOW is to consider making a planned gift. The most common type of planned gift is one made through your will or trust. Like all forms of planned gifts, these can be unrestricted or designated to the program/department of your choice. Other opportunities to support Spalding include retirement planned gifts made by naming us as a beneficiary in your 401(k), 403(b) or IRA, life insurance gifts made by listing us as a beneficiary on your existing or new policy, and gifts of real estate via a direct donation of your property or retained life estate which allows you to continue residing on the property through you and your spouse’s lifetime. Charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts are two more options that can provide you with great tax benefits and generate additional income for you.

Donor Spotlight Aaron Hockel ’03 What do you love most about Archbishop Spalding and your involvement here? I love seeing all the success stories about ASHS students. From athletics to the students excelling in robotics, it is great seeing the continued growth of the school. As an alumnus it is a source of pride to be associated with a school garnering recognition on a local, regional, and national level. What advice would you give to a potential donor who is considering investing in ASHS? Remember that every contribution, no matter the size, is impactful. Why do you think giving back is important to the advancement of Spalding and our students? Donors were contributing to the school when I was a student. They were unknown to me, but their generosity helped improve the Spalding experience for my classmates, me and my siblings who all graduated from ASHS. I feel it is important to give back to Spalding to bring that full circle. Spalding’s emphasis on improving facilities in the areas of technology and engineering is also important. These will be the most in-demand skills over the next 20 years and getting experience and exposure at the high school level is incredibly important. Why do you feel it is important for alumni to stay engaged/connected with ASHS? In some way, everyone who attends and graduates from ASHS benefits from the generosity of alumni before them. The school cannot grow and continue to evolve without alumni involvement. This does not strictly mean financial support. At our company, we’ve been fortunate to hire and work with many alumni. Where has life taken you since graduating from Spalding? Professional Life: • Graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in U.S. History in 2007 • After working in finance and corporate recruiting, joined AltaVista Strategic Partners in December 2011 as a partner/owner • Grew the company to 24 full time employees - providing marketing services to over 225 commercial and residential contracting businesses with clients in 36 states • Recognized by Inc Magazine as one of the Fastest Growing Private Companies in America 4 straight years (2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) • Recognized by the Baltimore Business Journal as one of the 50 fastest growing companies in Baltimore 3 straight years (2018, 2019, 2020) Personal Life: • Relocated back to Annapolis, MD from Arlington, VA in 2013 • Married my wife Katherine Leigh Hockel (Greenberg) of Suffern, NY in July 2016 in a backyard celebration at her parents’ home in Annapolis • We have 3 children: Harry – Age 3, Henry – Age 2, and Hattie – born 9/23/2020 How did Spalding prepare you to get where you are professionally? Spalding provided me with a strong academic foundation which helped me get into the University of Maryland. There are foundational reading, writing and computer science skills I learned at ASHS that I still use today. These skills have served me well throughout my entire academic and professional career. What advice would you give to students and young alumni? For students, appreciate the chance to attend a school like ASHS. Take advantage of the variety of classes. Once you find something you enjoy doing, run with it. For young alumni, especially those looking for career opportunities, I would recommend connecting with older alumni. Spalding alumni work across almost every industry ranging from the largest companies in the world to small local businesses. Many will give you a few minutes of their time strictly because you are a fellow alum. Take advantage of this! Thank You The 2019-2020 school year was like no other. We were able to host one golf tournament in the fall, but COVID 19 caused other events to be cancelled. The support from our community is greatly appreciated.

Cavalier Open On October 14, 2019 we hosted our 13th Annual Cavalier Open Golf Tournament. Giving Back The Spalding community is constantly finding ways of giving back because it connects us with others while making a positive difference in the world. Acts of generosity have a significant impact on people. As we donate, collect items and do other acts of kindness, we help spread positivity and hope which is truly contagious. Throughout this process, we enrich our own lives for the better. We choose to donate resources to other causes instead of using our resources to only help ourselves. This creates an environment of respect, caring and concern. In October, our Campus Ministry department began #CavsCare with simple ways to spread joy and respond to community needs. Our students and faculty have answered by making toiletry kits, fun care packages, and dropping thank you notes to their favorite educators. Each month, there will be at least four service options - these options will range from a single act that can be done in 5 minutes, to simple projects that support individuals’ most basic, but significant, needs. Examples are: • Spread Warmth: Donate to Spalding’s Blanket Drive. • Warm Hearts Warming Hands: Consider donating new or very gently used gloves or mittens to the West Annapolis POP Up Pantry. Drop off to Campus Ministry. • Provide Basic Needs: Get with a few friends and organize a Thanksgiving Basket for families in Bello Machre’s Group Home Program, Sarah’s House, and the Marian House. Recommended items (canned cranberry sauce, canned corn, canned green beans, canned sweet potatoes/boxed mashed potatoes, boxed macaroni and cheese, boxed cornbread/dinner roll mix, boxed stuffing mix, gravy, brownie/cake mix/graham cracker pie crust and pie filling, $25 Grocery Store Gift Card for Turkey). Drop off to Campus Ministry. • Give Gratitude: Drop some baked goods off to local first responders with a note of gratitude. • Pray: This month, choose someone you are extremely grateful for and pray for them daily. Heroes Work Here Teachers face a new set of challenges caused by the pandemic and have had to prepare for an unprecedented school year. Archbishop Spalding educators are doing what they’ve always done - making sure our students get the best educational experience possible. They are working all hours, figuring out how to make that happen, keeping the learning alive. Education continues to evolve. Teachers are reminded on a daily basis, the importance of flexibility. Every day, they are adapting, becoming more efficient and implementing new methods. Now is the time to not only be a teacher, it’s a time to be a motivator, a counselor and a great mentor. Our educators are committed to their students, to reach, inspire and teach, even from a distance. They have turned challenges into opportunities, while helping keep their students connected, motivated and focused. Making a difference in the lives of students, past and present, impacting them beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Taking a Forensic Science class outside so they can remain physically distanced while investigating their “crime scene”. They are the inspiring heroes that offer comfort and hope through their enthusiasm and can-do attitude.

The University recognizes outstanding educators who shape young minds in meaningful ways - thoughtfully approaching instruction, sharing an infectious love for learning, and caring for students both inside and outside the classroom. Each year, newly admitted University of Chicago students have the opportunity to reflect on their time in high school and nominate an educator who played a significant role in their education, made a positive impact in their lives, and whose influence has brought them to where they are today. We started our first company in 2011, our next company in 2015, and now a new company here in 2020. Why? Great question! The answer is the same as it’s always been, it’s almost inevitable at this point…passion. That passion gave us the confidence to bet on ourselves and start Foreword Films. Foreword started as a small business storytelling platform, merging our passion for both small businesses and storytelling into one company dedicated to using our experiences to grow and develop our clients and ourselves. Throughout the last 5 years, we’ve been based in Los Angeles, CA, working nationally and globally for clients like Nike, Red Bull and the NFL as well as local businesses, start-ups and nonprofits aiming to change the world through their business. Over the last few months, we’ve watched the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic slowly but surely infect almost every aspect of our lives and business. We slowed down dramatically, cancelled trips, postponed a wedding, and fell into financial uncertainty almost daily. We watched the communities we serve and the businesses we help stumble and fall. But we realized nothing was going to happen by sitting around and waiting. So one morning over coffee, we started blabbering about all the experiences we’d had over the last 10 years. We talked about the good times, we talked about the not so good times and what we’ve learned along the way. We had an incredible realization: we know a lot more than we think. We all do, those are the experiences we have and the memories we store deep in our minds and tap into when we need them. We realized throughout the course of our business and our lives that we had gained insights that could potentially help others. And keeping our small business passion in mind, we knew we could employ those insights to get small businesses off the ground. So we decided, once again, to bet on ourselves. From that long conversation, we launched our new company, The Moving Foreword Company, which created our first product, The Small Business Playbook. The Moving Foreword Co. is a small business consulting platform aimed to help good people like you and your business idea move forward through supporting services and a digital community. While Connor remains in Los Angeles to manage the company on the West Coast, Andrew has made the move back east to foster and grow our new venture where it first began. We are determined to rise from this pandemic to create a better world using the same passion we’ve always had. Because if you have passion, you can do anything. And this story is our Foreword. When we started our first company, we had absolutely no idea what we were doing…Does anybody?!? But it’s not about what you know when you start, it’s about what you learn along the way. It’s about what you learn by putting every last ounce of energy into that ONE thing that you love more than anything in the world; that is how you thrive. Rachel Prucnal ‘16 Rachel graduated from the University of Maryland in May 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering and a minor in Engineering Leadership Development. Do you feel that Spalding prepared you for college? Spalding prepared me in ways that I only realize now that I have graduated college. On an academic level, the classes at Spalding provided me with a foundation to tackle the difficult courses I took as an engineering student, but beyond that, I developed more confidence in myself as a student and learned how to balance my time with extracurricular activities. College was challenging but I left Spalding with the tools and the support system to succeed even when I was unsure myself. Was there any class and/or teacher at Spalding that had an impact on you? I am a proud graduate of Project Lead the Way so I want to give a shout out to Mrs. Brunner and Mrs. DiGiulian for helping me discover engineering and supporting me throughout that program and beyond. Also, taking classes like AP Biology with Mr. Kulkarni and Human Anatomy and Physiology with Dr. Singleton sparked my love for biology. The impact of these classes and the support of my teachers are why I chose to study bioengineering! Two more fantastic teachers that left an impact on me are Mr. Shephard in Photography and Mrs. Postlethwaite in AP Literature and Language. The faculty at Spalding are more than educators; they are mentors and motivators, and the care they put into their students extends beyond the classroom curriculum. What is your job title now? Formulation Associate Scientist Can you explain a bit about what you do? I work for the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Disease, specifically, in the Vaccine Production Program Laboratory. The goal of the Program is to facilitate the development of vaccines for human infectious disease and outbreak by translating candidate research vaccines into materials for clinical trials. As part of the Formulation and Stabilization Sciences department, my role involves designing and executing studies to develop stable formulations for vaccine candidates. It also involves developing and executing assays to characterize and test the stability of recombinant proteinbased vaccines, proteinaceous nanoparticles, and virus-like particles. Are you pursuing an advanced degree? If so, in what field? I am not currently pursuing an advanced degree but I am considering graduate school after I work for a few years and decide on what I want to study. What do you do to relax? After being on Spalding’s sailing team I continued to sail and race competitively at the University of Maryland and today! I have also found camping and hiking to be perfect socially distant activities in the midst of the pandemic. Is there anything else you’d like to say about your experience at Spalding? I’m grateful for the opportunity to create meaningful connections that have lasted beyond my high school years. 32

Christine Nairn helped the Houston Dash win the NWSL Challenge Cup in July. Christine is the league’s mosttenured player and was a 2013 first-round pick by the Seattle Reign in the NWSL’s inaugural season.

Kelly Ryan received the Virginia A. Pomeroy Scholarship through the Association for Women Lawyers Foundation. Kelly is a third year law student at Marquette University School of Law. She is committed to service, having volunteered in two of Marquette’s pro bono clinics. Upon graduation, Kelly plans to combine her legal education and experience to continue to serve others and contribute to her community as an effective advocate.

Stefan Morusiewicz married Samantha Rodriguez on June 7, 2020 with just immediate family in attendance at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Catonsville. They had an original date of April 24, 2020, but rescheduled because of COVID 19. The happy couple celebrated with a reception on July 31, 2020 at Rolling Hills Mansion in Catonsville. Stefan is working as an ICU nurse at The University of Maryland BaltimoreWashington Medical Center in Glen Burnie.

Ryan Tomoff was awarded the Temesgen Gomacho Award through Dr. Aziza Shad’s Aslan Project. Ryan was honored because of his volunteer efforts with Special Love and Camp Fantastic. Ryan was first diagnosed with cancer at the age of 2 and is now a fivetime cancer survivor.
