FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,

For almost 60 years, Archbishop Spalding High School has been igniting the potential in each and every Spalding student who has graced our hallowed halls. Nearly 1300 students arrive every day, stepping into a faith-filled, caring environment that creates a warm and welcoming home for all who are One In Christ. In this environment, students are not just educated, but they are also inspired to explore knowledge and interests in all aspects of our well-rounded educational experience.

In providing such a well-rounded educational experience, we ignite the sparks in our students that lead to a passionate embrace of their God-given talents. Students ignite their faith and find themselves shepherding others as members of the clergy. Students ignite their interest in engineering in our classrooms and then find themselves working for SpaceX. Students ignite their interest in biology and life sciences and find themselves studying marine Biology in Australia. Students ignite their interest in the arts and music and find themselves in recording studios and owning their own art galleries.

Throughout this edition of the Spalding magazine, you will be inspired by just a few of our distinguished alumni. Alums such as Aaron Weibe, Megan (Fortman) Gotto, Keith Colon, and Lauren Schene ignited their potential during their time at Spalding and now inspire others with their passion for the arts. Contributions of alums like these have set the world on fire and shown our community that there are no limits to what a Cavalier can accomplish.

All of this is possible thanks to your time, talent, and treasure, which have made our community a beacon of hope for all. From the careful guidance of our dedicated faculty, staff, and coaches to the love from a Spalding parent and the generous contributions of our benefactors, our students are provided with an experience that ignites their potential and sets the world on fire! This is the very thing Christ called us to do, and it remains true to this day. It is what keeps us One Spalding that forever remains One In Christ.

Sincerely,

MY FIRST YEAR

When the school year began, I wasn’t sure how the students and teachers were going to respond to my offering the Sacrament of Confession on Monday afternoons immediately after school. You can imagine the thoughts and questions that were going through my mind before sitting down in the school confessional for the first time... However, to my pleasant surprise, as the weeks went by, what started with ten minutes of confessions turned into a full half hour, and to my amazement, there were some Mondays when I was hearing confessions for an entire hour! What an answered prayer. I continue giving thanks even now for the number of times absolution was given to so many penitents who were thankful to have their sins forgiven.

Hearing confessions after school, however, was just one of the several initiatives that I wanted to begin as a newly ordained, first-year Catholic priest. I also wanted to offer a daily Mass for the school around once a week. If the Eucharist truly is the source and summit of the whole of the Christian life and moral life, I wanted to make it more accessible to the Spalding community. So, in collaboration with Campus Ministry and the Theology Department, a daily Mass began being offered regularly during the school day for anyone who wanted to attend. Teachers would bring their classes to these Masses throughout the year, and outside of Mass, I would find classes visiting the chapel for a few minutes to spend time with our Lord in the Eucharist. What better way is there to ignite hearts and enkindle a living friendship with Jesus?

What was chaplaincy like between the times the sacraments were being offered? It was a joy walking through the school and talking with students, faculty, and staff. I’ll admit, that the first few months of the year were a little challenging. The students didn’t know me, and nobody really talked to me and barely acknowledged my existence. Now, I walk through the halls giving fist bumps, receiving smiles, and hearing “Hey Father!” all throughout the school. I have loved attending sporting events, theater productions, retreats, a robotics competition, a field trip to a seminary, and other events throughout this past year.

One of my greatest joys from this past year was after a daily Mass when one student in the senior class told me that he applied (and was later accepted) to seminary to begin formation for the priesthood. In the coming years, I’m looking forward to having more students share with me that they are pursuing a vocation to the priesthood and religious life. I’m looking forward to celebrating many weddings for future alumni, and one day, many years from now, baptizing their future children. The Lord Jesus has many great things in store for Archbishop Spalding High School in the years to come, and I’m thankful to be a part of it.

LAUREN SCHENE ‘10

Navigating the Path Less Taken

In the ever-changing landscape of career choices, sometimes the road less traveled leads to unexpected and fulfilling destinations. Such is the narrative of Lauren Schene, a Spalding alumna whose journey took her from psychology to theatre and, in an unexpected twist, to the tech industry.

Following her time at Spalding, Lauren ventured to Catholic University in DC, where she intended to major in psychology. However, a detour quickly presented itself when she realized the statistics classes didn’t align with her passions. After conversations with her parents, Lauren switched to theater. This decision was met with unconditional support by her family and close friends.

After graduating from Catholic, Lauren embarked on a unique adventure with the Disney College Program before finding her niche in the world of tech startups. Serendipitously, she landed a position at a company founded by Spalding alum Jody Presti ‘92, laying the groundwork for her current cybersecurity firm Zero Fox role.

Reflecting on her journey, Lauren acknowledges the misconception that a theater major equates solely to a career on Broadway. She emphasizes the many skills gained through theatrical pursuits, from public speaking to teamwork and problem-solving. These skills, often overlooked, have proven invaluable in her professional endeavors.

If you are unfamiliar with Lauren Schene, chances are you are familiar with her work. Since 2019, Lauren has been the Director of Archbishop Spalding’s Theatre Productions. She was so happy to be able to return to Archbishop Spalding and loved that she could share her true passion with the current generation of Spalding students. One of Lauren’s proudest achievements came during her time as Spalding’s Theatre Director when her “The Drowsy Chaperone” production won the 2019 CAPPY for Best Musical. It was a moment of validation and triumph, highlighting the dedication and talent of her students.

Looking back on her Spalding days, Lauren fondly recalls the camaraderie of chorus class, band trips, and musical productions. She found her true passions within these extracurricular activities and forged lifelong friendships. She also credits Mrs. Hough with pushing her during her time as a student and not allowing her to settle, which has turned her into the director she is today.

As a mentor to current Spalding students, Lauren offers sage advice: trust your instincts and pursue what brings you joy. She encourages students to embrace their interests fully, even if they deviate from traditional career paths. Through her journey, she has learned that success is not confined to a singular route but is instead the culmination of passion, determination, and resilience. Lauren underscores the invaluable role Spalding plays in shaping the lives of its students. Lauren’s story inspires us to embrace the journey, follow our passions, and never shy away from the unconventional, for it is in the pursuit of our true calling that we uncover our most significant potential.

CELEBRATING

10 years OF IB

In the fall of 2014, Archbishop Spalding High School embarked on a new educational path by introducing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) courses. This was a bold move, and it was met with equal bravery by the 13 students who chose to be the first to explore this global-centric curriculum. Their journey was marked by enthusiasm and adaptability, setting the stage for a new era of interdisciplinary learning and a commitment to a better, more peaceful world.

As we anticipate the next school year, we proudly celebrate 10 years as an IB World School. We will welcome close to 210 juniors and seniors to IB classrooms, where they will actively develop their skills as inquiry-driven, principled, reflective learners. Among these students, over 15 follow in the footsteps of their siblings or cousins, creating a growing family of determined and curious students. This sense of community and shared commitment makes our IB DP truly special.

Our IB graduates have embarked on diverse and exciting career paths, a testament to the versatility and real-world readiness of the IB programme. They are making their mark in various fields, from education and chemistry to marketing, international relations, government, business, and even the US Coast Guard. We are eager to share their stories and reflections on how their IB experience has shaped their love for learning and influenced their lives.

The heart of the IB DP lies with the teachers who have committed themselves to delivering content and assessments of the highest standard. Spalding’s IB teachers are a community of educators involved in targeted professional development; they are exposed to instructional practices that are culled from a network of educators around the globe. Their steadfast dedication has made a positive difference in the lives of their students.

Join us next year to celebrate all we’ve accomplished as an IB World School, and look forward to the next 10 years!

This incredible opportunity promises to further showcase the talent and dedication of Archbishop Spalding's music program on the international stage.

SERVICE RECAP

Campus Ministry offers our students the opportunity to extend their education and formation through retreats, service, and worship. This wrap-up offers a glimpse into the variety of formational experiences our students participated in this past year. Through these experiences, our students have the opportunity to venture beyond their own perspectives, feel the love of God through communal experiences, form meaningful friendships, and deepen their love of Christ. Our work is inspired by and flows from our educational mission which calls for a dynamic integration of academic excellence, social responsibility, and faith. Campus Ministry is shaped by

students, faculty, and staff who leave pieces of themselves with its people and ministries.

At Freshman Retreat, we began our year by welcoming our newest members into our Cavalier family engaging in talks that explore - What does it mean to be a Cavalier? and What does it mean to be One in Christ? We celebrated Mass with our incoming parents and through prayer, meaningful conversation, and community, over 50 upperclassmen enthusiastically welcomed our Class of 2027.

Our Sophomores continued our long-standing tradition of becoming deeply involved in the issue of hunger

One in Christ

throughout the year, joining regular volunteers at Our Daily Bread and the Franciscan Center. Participating in 17 days of service, our students recall and reflect on the truth that the line between “us” and “them” is so slight. Volunteering at these sites gives our students the ability to immerse themselves and look at the world around them, acknowledging social issues and seeking out moments that allow for transformation. Regular volunteers also joined us in our monthly Happy Helpers for the Homeless Sandwich Making and dinners at Sarah’s House, and Bowl Painting for St. Vincent DePaul. Our Cavaliers completed a total of 55,681 service hours just this year. In a device-driven world, those hours translate into time spent with and for people. To further connect our students with over 26 organizations, in April, we held a Community Service Fair offering a pathway to connection and solidarity with those who are most vulnerable in our communities.

Juniors and Seniors participated in their respective retreats this year. At the very heart of Spalding retreats is the truth that we are all created and loved by God - that the world is a better place because we are part of his divine purpose. Our students explore the realities of their lives through the lens of faith, find peace and freedom in reconciliation, and create lasting

memories born out of a commitment to loving one another through those days. Faculty and staff support these formative experiences, offering silence, the holy Eucharist, spiritual conversation, and meaningful prayer. Leaders emerge and memories are made that last a lifetime.

The life of a Spalding Cavalier is full. Through all that fullness, it is vital for us to offer our students moments of peace. It is impossible to love our neighbor fully or find growth without moments of prayer. In the Chapel, together, we prayed the Examen, spent time in Adoration, and attended Masses with our theology classes. We transformed the PAC into a tiny Cathedral celebrating schoolwide Masses and Reconciliation Services. With their discipleship, our Senior Extraordinary Ministers, altar servers, gift bearers, and lectors guided and supported those ministries. Mr. Heming’s Liturgical Choir brought us together in vibrant song! Our Campus Ministry Student Team also held prayerful gatherings that offered fellowship centering on gratitude, the saints, and lenten reflections. Through all of these touchstones of prayer, our students come to know that God has immeasurable space for them to feel centered, and loved and find a home.

The Cavaliers then rattled off six straight conference wins to earn the opportunity to defend their ‘A’ Conference title. In the Championship Game, Spalding cruised passed McDonogh 40-7.

Boys’ Ice Hockey

The Ice Cavs combined two second quarter power play goals with a solid defensive effort to claim its seventh ‘A’ Conference title since 2012 and second consecutive. Having competed against Calvert Hall multiple times in the regular season, the Cavaliers simplified the game plan and fought through an early stalemate to emerge victorious.

Girls’ Tennis

Tennis jumped out to early season success, posting a 10-1 conference record before the tournament. Led by strong doubles results in the conference tournament, the Cavaliers shared the ‘B’ Conference title with Park School for their second championship in the last three years.

Rugby

Rugby completed the perfect season, 9-0 by defeating Calvert Hall in the championship match in extra kicks. Their late season success was credited to the training and competition they experienced earlier in the year on a training trip to Ireland.

Student Athlete Commits

WHAT’S NEW?

Archbishop Spalding High School Introduces The Golden Cavalier Pinning Ceremony

On Sunday morning, May 19th, Archbishop Spalding introduced a new tradition: The Golden Cavalier Society and Pinning Ceremony. The festivities began with a luncheon celebrating the 50th reunion of the Class of 1974, held at Spalding. Following the luncheon, 110 alumni from the Classes of 1964 to 1974 gathered in the Performing Arts Center for the Golden Cavalier Pinning Ceremony, honoring the legacy and contributions of our earliest graduates. The event concluded with light refreshments and tours of the school. The Performing Arts Center and lobby were filled with smiles, laughter, and countless photos as old friends and classmates enjoyed reconnecting. Thank you to all who attended—it was wonderful to spend the day with you. We eagerly anticipate next year’s event, where all Golden Cavaliers are invited to help us welcome the Class of 1975 to the Golden Cavalier Society.

IN MEMORIAM

Father Thomas E. Ryan left an indelible mark on Archbishop Spalding High School during his tenure as chaplain, serving for nearly 22 years before retiring in 2022. Known for his compassionate and dedicated service, Father Ryan was beloved by students, faculty, and the broader community. Father Ryan passed peacefully after a prolonged illness on January 2nd.

Father Ryan’s approach to ministry at Spalding was profoundly personal and engaging. He was renowned for his inspiring homilies, often ending with the uplifting phrase, “There you go, saints, there you go.” His ability to connect with students personally made him a trusted advisor and mentor. His dedication went beyond the classroom and the chapel, often participating in school activities and being a constant supportive presence in the lives of the students and their families.

One of Father Ryan’s notable contributions was his advocacy for social justice. He actively organized and led campaigns for racial equality, economic justice, and environmental sustainability within the school community. His encouragement for students to consider religious vocations, much like the influences he experienced during his own education, was another significant aspect of his work. His efforts in these areas left a lasting impact on the school’s culture and the personal development of many students.

His legacy at Spalding is commemorated through the Father Thomas E. Ryan Endowed Scholarship Fund. This fund, established in his honor, has provided financial support to numerous students, enabling them to pursue their educational dreams. By ensuring that his influence will continue to benefit future generations of Spalding students , the fund stands as a testament to Father Ryan’s commitment to education and service.

Father Ryan’s life and work exemplified faith, service, and community values, making him a cherished figure in the Archbishop Spalding community and beyond. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he touched and through the ongoing scholarship fund established in his name.
