FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR FRIENDS,

Over 20 years ago, I came to Archbishop Spalding as a teacher with little experience but a strong desire to serve others. Guided by educational leaders such as Kathy Mahar, who was the first to ever observe me in the classroom, I developed a passion and appreciation for a welcoming Catholic school community. While life has taken me many places, I am thrilled to answer the call to serve as the new President of Archbishop Spalding High School.

With that in mind, I offer my sincere gratitude to those who have invested their time, talent, and/or treasure to build Spalding’s success. Through your generous partnership, tuition assistance can be offered; capital projects in fine arts and engineering are now complete; and programs to support our faculty, staff, and students are strengthened. Your investment is a sign of your faith in our future. With that in mind, let us build on our success.

Our Catholic faith teaches us that we are all members of the body of Christ. As one Spalding community we, the students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, friends, and benefactors are many parts but we are all one. We are…One in Christ.

Archbishop Spalding’s mission has been to commit ourselves to serving students in a Catholic, caring environment for almost 60 years. With our proud history, we now look to the future, one that brings 1300 students to our campus each day. These students will be challenged to grow spiritually, academically, physically, and emotionally. Whether in a classroom, the chapel, an engineering lab, athletic field, art studio or a stage, we must do what we can to provide our students with the best Spalding experience possible.

I am blessed to serve, I have faith in our future, and I am excited to support our Spalding family. I wish you many blessings and all good things; and may you always remain One in Christ.

All the best,

1
With our proud history, we now look to the future, one that brings 1300 students to our campus each day.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN

It is a joy and privilege to serve as the new chaplain to the Archbishop Spalding High School community. I want to express my gratitude to Father Tom Ryan for his many years of service and extend my best wishes upon his retirement. I was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore on August 22, 2020, and assigned as associate pastor at St. John the Evangelist Church in Severna Park, where I continue to serve alongside my new role at Spalding. I grew up in Mount Airy, MD (I attended the same public high school as Mr. Bill Weber!). I enjoy music, playing the bass, sports (especially baseball), native plant gardening, birding, reading, writing, and traveling. But enough about me.

I’ve been asked to share a few thoughts about “faith in our future.” I assume “ours” means Spalding’s, but I also invite us to imagine how the Spalding community is called to look beyond itself and to see our faith serving the future of our families, our neighborhoods, our cities, our church, and our world. This is what we mean by becoming, “One in Christ”. The future belongs to all of us—every human being—and each of us is responsible for what we choose to make of it with our God-given time, talent, and treasures.

Faith is how God gives us a future. This is the meaning and power of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without faith, our future is dominated by fear (a “fight or flight” mentality), which only keeps us locked in the past. While honoring our history, we are called to be God’s faithful witnesses to a future that’s bigger and brighter than the past. Faith opens new doors to greater holiness, unity, and peace.

• Faith in our future looks like our engineering program and robotics team imagining solutions today for tomorrow’s problems.

• Faith in our future looks like classes in social studies and government, our Model United Nations club, studying the way of diplomacy and public service in a world addicted to division and war (Isaiah 2:4).

• Faith in our future looks like our environmental club stewarding creation by planting the seeds of a more abundant, sustainable planet, and pursuing what Pope Francis calls “integral ecology” (cf. Laudato Si’).

• Faith in our future looks like our fine arts, music, and drama productions generating authentic human culture through sharing God’s spiritual gift of beauty (Eph 2:10).

• Faith in our future looks like coaches passing on lessons to our student-athletes about teamwork, perseverance, and humility that serve a purpose bigger than even sports (2 Tim 4:7-8).

• Faith in our future looks like our English and foreign languages department, our creative writing club and student newspaper, forming effective communicators of truth in the likeness of God who creates and redeems the world with words (Gen 1:3; Jn 1:1).

• Of course, our theology department and campus ministry show “faith in our future” by handing on “a future of faith” as they inspire disciples, future theologians, and missionaries to do the will of God. And if I may, I pray our future includes more vocations to the priesthood and religious life from the Spalding community!

As Pope Francis loves to say, “Let us dream.”
My message to our students: Our school, our Church, our world, wants—needs—your hopes and dreams. Faith in our future is about an adventure waiting to be had, and it all begins with a big heart and imagination open to God.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

DEAR FRIENDS OF ARCHBISHOP SPALDING,

We have Faith in Our Future because we can look to Archbishop Spalding’s rich past. This remarkable institution has been educating young people on New Cut Road for more than a half-century and we’ve been growing and improving every year.

Our new strategic plan embraces this Faith in Our Future. It’s called Building on Success with good reason. Our campus has never been better and a joyful spirit infuses our students and teachers. They are filled with an energy that comes from being back together after the pandemic.

We got to this place through the leadership of President Emerita Kathy Mahar, and our new President, Brian Kohler, is the perfect leader to, yes, build on that success. Having been mentored by Mrs. Mahar, he is firmly rooted in Spalding’s values. As Mr. Kohler begins his

tenure, he and the faculty and staff are not resting on past achievements. Instead, with guidance and oversight from the board of directors, they are making those successes the foundation on which they will build momentum in pursuit of a never-ending goal: making Spalding better each year than it was the year before.

On behalf of the board of directors, I ask for your support, your time, and your prayers as we build on our successes with a deep Faith in Our Future.

One in Christ, Daniel LeDuc

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

the sicker that their patients were, and they sought to fix that problem. Part of their goal is to support a healthcare model that rewards performance instead of volume, and to create A.I. technology that physicians trust to spot adverse health events before they happen.

Whether they are in the fields of medicine, science, education or the arts, we are proud of the legacy that our Spalding alumni are creating across the globe. Take for example, Andrew Eye ‘97…. A successful entrepreneur who’s most recent venture is changing the way we tackle healthcare.

Andrew has quite an impressive resume. Upon graduating Summa Cum Laude from Virginia Tech in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology, he dreamed big. After just five short years of working as a developer, engineer or consultant for other firms, he created his own business, The Bodkin Group. His entrepreneurial spirit enabled him to continue forming (and selling) software companies that were meeting real world demands. In 2007, he co-founded Ciphent which was named to the prestigious Inc. 500 List, of the fastest growing private companies in the United States.

While these businesses created change in the tech space, Andrew’s current business, ClosedLoop, is creating quite a shift in the healthcare industry. The prospect of using his start-up skills in the healthcare industry was not something Andrew had ever considered. Yet in 2017, he was approached with an inspiring idea.

“If you think about it…. We only use Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) technology in one market - and that is advertising. You have ads following you around social media all day long. Why don’t we use this same concept and transition it to other industries? A.I. is a powerful technology, and it is time we are using it for good.”

ClosedLoop’s mission is to support value based care by providing the ability for healthcare providers to make accurate, explainable, and actionable predictions of individual-level health risks. Andrew and his team found it alarming that hospitals’ profitability had been enhanced by

“We should all be upset that there is this amazing technology out there that could be used to better healthcare and better patient outcomes. ClosedLoop is working to predict the future, so healthcare providers can change it.”

While the company is still relatively young, they estimate that 1-2% of Americans are touched by the ClosedLoop solutions already. When asked what Andrew is most proud of with their success thus far he remarked that while there is still so much to do, there is one patient success story that he thinks of each and every day. One of ClosedLoop’s current contracts is with a Medicaid provider in Chicago, to flag some of their many chronic care patients. The standard technology used to monitor their patient pool had not yet identified one at-risk patient the ClosedLoop technology did. It was a 15-year old child who had been struggling with mental health issues for years. With their technology, the boy was properly diagnosed and able to receive the care that he desperately needed, in a system that would have otherwise marked him as not-atrisk due to his age. It can be tough to quantify the impact they are having, but Andrew finds comfort and motivation in stories like these.

Andrew acknowledges that his Catholic education inspired him to strive for success, surrounding him with a peer group that had high expectations and goals. He also credits Spalding, and teachers like Mr. Kiessling and Mrs. Pachence for providing him with the framework and guidance he needed to think about the impact his teenage years would have on his future and career.

ASHS is beyond proud of Andrew and his unwavering commitment to enabling a healthier future for all!

For 57 years Spalding has produced alumni who are building successful futures for themselves and enhancing the future for those around them.

RECENT GRAD SPOTLIGHT

CATCHER SALAZAR ’22

What are your thoughts about Spalding?

Talk about your time here.

One of the best things about Spalding is the community. You always hear schools, universities, and institutions touting their ‘community’, describing it as strong and vibrant, supportive and helpful, and so on. That’s not always a reality, but it definitely is at Spalding. Spalding’s community of teachers, students, and administrators feels close to an extended family at times and makes school an enjoyable place to be.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in at Spalding? Anything outside of Spalding?

The most worthwhile extracurricular I participated in at Spalding was the Cavs Science Club, which I founded in my sophomore year. I started with only about 6 or 7 other students, and in the past years we have doubled that number, hosted numerous guest speakers including professors and a National Medal of Science recipient, and weathered a virtual transition. I also joined the Cyberpatriot club in my sophomore year and moved up to become president in my senior year.

Have there been any defining moments of your high school career?

In the beginning of my sophomore year, I started an internship at Johns Hopkins University. I researched crossing-over in meiosis, a process involved in the generation of sex cells and associated with age-related infertility, Down Syndrome, and miscarriages. I did various experiments using the model organism C. elegans, a microscopic groundworm, and was included as a co-author for a research preprint. Ultimately the paper was published online and seeing that felt like the culmination of many, many hours of effort.

of 2022

Do you feel prepared for college?

While I don’t feel prepared to move across the country quite yet, I do feel academically and socially prepared for college. I know that there will be plenty of challenges, but I know that my experiences in the past years have prepared me to face and overcome these challenges—and if I can’t overcome them, then to bounce right back up.

How would you like to be remembered at Spalding?

I hope my science club lives on. That could be my legacy at Spalding, one that will hopefully inspire more students to better Spalding’s science department, and in doing so, provide opportunities for future Spalding students to explore the possibility of a life in science (and delve deeper along the way).

Any favorite Spalding memories you’d like to share?

The Merrill Lynch-sponsored trip to the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting was unforgettable. My AP Macroeconomics teacher, Mr. McGrain, three fellow students, and I traveled to Omaha, Nebraska for a weekend. Hearing Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger speak in-person was something freshman-me never expected my Spalding education to bring. A weekend surrounded by individuals with a similar interest in business and investing (which includes my friends from Spalding) will be a formative experience going forward. And lastly, while I won’t share too much about them, the memories I made on senior retreat will always have a place in my heart.

Top: Catcher is currently completing his first semester at the University of Southern California where he is on a Presidential Scholarship, majoring in Biochemistry. Right: Catcher attended the Berkshire Hathaway shareholder’s meeting in April.
Prior to graduation we had the chance to catch up with Catcher Salazar about his time at Spalding. We are confident that Catcher, and all members of the Class
have bright futures ahead and we cannot wait to see what is in store for them!

STUDENT PROFILES

Additionally, I also want to study theology. Learning about my faith will help me in whatever my vocation or occupation is. For example, an important part of married life is the passing on of our faith to the next generation. The study of theology is also useful in personal growth, evangelization, and learning to become a well rounded Catholic in any field of work.

I’m excited for life post-Spalding as I continue to discern my vocation and God’s will for my life!

How has Spalding prepared you or helped to guide you in this direction?

What are your plans for life post-Spalding?

Honestly, I have no idea where I’ll end up after Spalding! What I do know is that God has put in me a desire to be a missionary. I’m applying and discerning to be a missionary with NET ministries (“national evangelization teams” that are across the country helping other young people encounter Jesus).

But being a missionary isn’t just about joining a program like NET. As Catholics, we are all called to be missionaries wherever in the world God has placed us. I know after I graduate, wherever I end up, I’ll be a missionary, whether that be in my family life, or with my peers at college, or in my job. I plan to live the missionary life wherever I go because I want everyone to know and experience the love of Jesus.

Above all, the relationships I’ve had with my teachers at Spalding have helped me grow in knowledge of myself and of God and helped me discern my future. My religion teachers have played a huge role in guiding my development as a student and a person. I also look to the example of my other teachers who use the unique talents of their various subject fields to serve God. I look up to my science and math teachers who pray before class and comment on how the love of our Father and Creator can be seen in the natural world and in the beauty and complexity of mathematics.

Overall, my teachers have shown me that God has a unique plan for each of us and have taught me to think freely and creatively about where my future could take me.

How excited are you for your future and how would you best answer - what gives you faith in your future??

I have faith in my future because I know that God will provide for me wherever I end up. I know he has a unique plan for me. I know it probably won’t be what I expect, and that He might send me down a crazy path, but that I can trust Him and lean on Him in every moment.

MADISON WRIGHT & MIA SMITH
7
MADISON WRIGHT ’23

What are your plans for life post-Spalding?

Although I haven’t chosen a college just yet, I plan to attend a four year university to study a major in the creative arts field. I aspire to major in graphic design, digital art and/or creative technology which pairs several art forms with computer science principles. I’m currently an intern at a design firm and my hope is to keep that position throughout college. Who knows, maybe I’ll stay at the design firm (if they’ll have me!), work at Disney as an animator, or secure a career at a huge video game company as a creator! No matter what the future holds, I’m ready to face the challenges and explore the possibilities!

How has Spalding prepared you or helped to guide you in this direction?

Spalding has not only given me an opportunity to take interesting and challenging classes but more importantly, Spalding gifted me with a balance of

educational and spiritual support that was needed more than ever during the unprecedented shift to virtual learning. I am grateful to the administration and the teachers for their devotion to their students, and constantly going the extra mile to show that they want the best for you. I also appreciate my peers for challenging my ideas, allowing me to grow as a person alongside them and accepting aspects of me that allowed me to be my authentic self! Spalding has made me confident that I can try just about anything and succeed. Confident that I will make the right decisions, pursue my dreams vigorously, advocate for change and continue to challenge myself to be multifaceted, true, and a good citizen to the world!

How excited are you for your future and how would you best answer - what gives you faith in your future??

Faith is defined as exhibiting confidence in someone or something. You can only have faith if you can be confident in your beliefs and that everything will happen just as it should. I believe wholeheartedly that my four year experience at Spalding has prepared me for the next chapter. I have grown so much over the past couple of years confident that the Spalding community always had my back. Our class has been through a lot, but it was how we emerged from those challenges that made me realize that we can conquer just about anything the world throws at us!

That’s why I have faith in my future. Looking back at my past and seeing the progress after facing adversity, makes me even more excited for my future! Experience is what makes life worth living. Having the confidence that I will experience, gives me faith. The future is full of uncertainty, but I’m beyond excited to see what it holds for me and the rest of my class! So, keep experiencing, class of 2023.

Two Spalding seniors, Mia Smith and Madison Wright, have unique perspectives on what gives them faith in their future. While both ladies have different paths in mind, they are undoubtedly prepared and excited for what is to come.

WHY SUPPORT SPALDING?

We are thankful for the many ways our alumni, current parents, past parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends contribute to Spalding. Your contributions help us provide funding for a wide breadth of academic, athletic and co-curricular programming; for tuition assistance and merit-based scholarships; for faculty and staff professional development and for campus improvements. Your continued support enables faculty and staff to continue to provide the Spalding tradition of excellence for our students.

LEAVING A LEGACY

ASHS invites you to become a member of the Trinity Society, established to recognize and honor those who have included Spalding in their wills, trusts, insurance policies or estate plans. The members of the Trinity Society demonstrate their commitment to the mission of Archbishop Spalding High School and the education of tomorrow’s leaders.

Members of the Trinity Society receive a custom gift, invitations to exclusive school events, periodic communications from President Brian Kohler, and inclusion in our Annual Report in perpetuity. Please notify us if you have made, or wish to make a planned gift to ASHS by contacting Jennifer Weissmueller at 410-969-9105 *1242 or weissmuellerj@spaldinghs.org.

WAYS TO GIVE

Charitable support to Archbishop Spalding High School enhances the many programs, equipment, and facilities throughout the campus.

CASH

Gifts of all sizes made by check, credit card, or electronic payment provide immediate support. Gifts can be made outright or pledged over a period of time. A gift of cash is the most common gift, often online or by check.

STOCK

A gift of stock may be transferred to Archbishop Spalding, thereby helping you to avoid capital gains tax. The Advancement Office will be happy to send you the information needed to gift stock.

PROPERTY

There are several options available when donating real estate. An outright gift of a house, land or vacation property avoids capital gains taxes and entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the full value of the gift. There are also options that allow the donor to give property and retain the use of it for his/her lifetime.

MATCHING GIFT

Many companies participate in matching gift programs. Your gift can have double the impact because of your employer’s matching gift program.

BEQUESTS

This is a gift made by a provision in one’s will naming Archbishop Spalding as a beneficiary.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

This gift allows the donor to receive benefits for his/her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive especially when one has highly appreciated assets.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS

This form of support transfers assets to a trustee who in turn manages the trust and pays an income back to the donor for life or for a specific time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to the school. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction.

LIFE INSURANCE

If Archbishop Spalding is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy premiums become eligible as a tax-deductible gift.

ACADEMIC RECAP

At Archbishop Spalding High School, like many schools, we have faith in our future because our teachers, in all subjects, are helping our students acquire lifelong learning habits. What sets the Spalding educational experience apart from other schools is that becoming a lifelong learner is not simply a transaction-becoming a lifelong learner here is transformational.

opportunity to dive into engineering or computer science and solve real-world problems in collaboration with their peers. Students choose between a rigorous engineering curriculum that includes: Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, Engineering Design & Development or a computer science curriculum that includes: Computer Science Essentials, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A, and Cybersecurity.

Students are transformed as they complete the International Baccalaureate Diploma program or take any of the nine different IB courses we offer. In an IB class, students will learn to understand complexity, communicate clearly, and understand what gives language its power to change minds, and the world.

Students are transformed as they participate in Project Lead the Way (PLTW). PLTW is a 4-year program that gives students the

The arts transform students, and the arts transform our community. Students create music, whether, in band or chorus, guitar or music technology, and they create beautiful works of art in classes like photography, film, drawing painting, or visual arts.

Our students are transformed because they know that they are loved and that they belong. Because of this, our students go out into the world as principled, knowledgeable thinkers, open-minded, caring risk-takers, and faithful loving disciples. It is my great hope that inspired by this knowledge and their many different experiences, our students will be able to, in the words of Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ “Inch ourselves closer to creating a community of kinship such that God might recognize it.”

“The illiterate of the 21st century won’t be those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. Therefore it is vital that schools develop students that are lifelong learners that are constantly seeking new knowledge.”

SERVICE RECAP

As we find ourselves in the midst of this hopeful season, the familiar words of Jesus, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” linger at the forefront of our hearts and minds. Always, at this time of year, we feel called to give of ourselves more fully to our coveted relationships and to relationships beyond our immediate circlesthose in great need. Those with whom Jesus spent almost all of his days.

We are fortunate at Spalding to offer our students theology classes, retreats, worship experiences, and opportunities to engage in service ministry. Each of these seeks to help our young men and women grow spiritually, to connect them to the divine, and to let them love as Christ loved. This call to serve is conveyed through the prayer of one of our beloved Catholic saints,

“Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, have that of knowing that I do your will.”

At the core of Spalding’s mission is the forming of our young people to be, first, true to the mission and joy of the Gospel, and then, to themselves. God has ultimately created us – not to give Him what is left, but to give to Him first. Our faith tells

us God will ask, How well have you loved and how well did you take care of those in need?

Time and time again, this question prods us outside the walls of the red and white and into the places where ministry of presence can transform the lives of our students, and the lives of those in need. With this transformation comes faith in what our Cavaliers will do next, who they will become, and how they will thrive as apostolic people - giving us an undeniable faith in our future.

A look at some of the ways in which our students are steering us to a future filled with hope:

In December of 2021, our Water Polo Team donated and delivered toys to local families in need. Shortly thereafter, in February of 2022, Spalding’s Comfort Cases Club put together over 175 backpacks filled with personal care items for children entering the foster care system. The Make Every Day Count Club donated baby blankets to the Linus Foundation, which provides love, security and comfort to children who are seriously ill or otherwise in need. Traveling a bit further, over the summer, nine of our students and two faculty, participated in a week-long immersion experience in Camden, New Jersey, exploring social justice issues and providing direct service to the underserved.

More recently, our long time partnership and monthly dinner service with Sarah’s House, led

27

to our receipt of the Catholic Charities’ Anne Lindsey Otenasek Youth Service Award, granted to individuals and organizations who share in Ann Lindsey’s spirit and personal commitment to helping others. This was a first time honor for us at Spalding, recognizing the significance of longtime community partnerships.

LOVING AS JESUS LOVED

While many of our ministries and partnerships are woven into the fabric of our community, our students also jump to respond to immediate needs. In October, with the support of our families, students raised $7,145 in just one week to send to the Diocese of Venice, Southwest Florida. This money will help to build and restore Catholic schools and parishes that were destroyed in the most recent hurricane. This impromptu response was entirely faculty and student led.

We also began this school year with our Annual Food Drive, collecting over 6,025 food items to support the Anne Arundel County Food Bank and Little Sisters of the Poor. Our Blanket Drive culminated in November, collecting over 685 blankets to support Happy Helpers for the Homeless, which serves people who are homeless in both Baltimore City and Anne Arundel County. On a monthly basis, our students decorate and pack lunch bags to also support Happy Helpers. Another exciting partnership is the one we share with St. Vincent DePaul. After school, our students gather to create and paint bowls that are sent to “Empty Bowls”St. Vincent’s yearly fundraiser, which netted over $90,000 to support their hunger services programs.

Each of these acts of generosity and loving partnerships began with a decision. A simple decision to give of oneself to another. These simple decisions, by countless students, advance the mission of Spalding, advance the mission of the Gospel, and advance the mission to love as Christ loved. To be human is to have a heart that is moved by stories of people in need, and to understand that the impact on our lives can be just as valuable. It is our hope and prayer that our Cavaliers continue to shape our future, guided by their faith and purpose to transform themselves and the world.

ATHLETICS RECAP

Teams include traditional sports, such as football and baseball, and atypical high school sports in the region such as ice hockey and water polo.

With all of the student-athletes on Spalding’s campus, programs have been extraordinarily competitive within the Maryland Independent Athletic Association (MIAA) and the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM). During the 2021-22 athletic campaign, 18 of Spalding’s varsity teams made the postseason, nine making the finals, and five winning a championship.

FINE ARTS HALL OF FAME

In April, after a long hiatus due to Covid, we were thrilled to induct our newest class to the Fine Arts Hall of Fame. We honor Stephanie, Gary, Dan, Greg, RJ and Katie, and thank them for their many contributions to Spalding’s performing arts.

STEPHANIE HUESGEN

Stephanie Huesgen was a faculty member of the Music Department for 32 years at Archbishop Spalding High School. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a major in flute and piano.

Her professional career began in her hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania. Upon moving to Maryland, in the fall of 1987, she excitedly accepted a teaching position with ASHS. Stephanie was the only music teacher, instructing the band, chorus, guitar, general music, and music theory. Over the years, the music program has expanded to a total of four teachers in the department, twelve different performance ensembles and an enrollment of over three hundred students. The department has attended Music Festivals, both at the County and Regional level for over twenty years, receiving Superior Ratings.

Stephanie also had the pleasure of teaching her two children, Chris (’07) and Alexis (’09). Both were four-year members of her bands. Stephanie takes great pride in the development and achievements of the ASHS Music Program. She has found no greater reward than working with her gifted colleagues in the Music Department and the talented and hardworking students at Spalding.

GARY PHILLIPS P ’10

Gary began assisting with the Spalding performing arts groups when his daughter Carly was a freshman in 2006, and has served as a technical advisor on many plays, concerts, and Variety Shows since then. He enjoys helping the students on the technical crews develop their skills and prepare them for working in the performing arts at the college level and beyond. Gary is hoping to be useful to the Spalding educators, students, and staff for a few more years.

33

DAN RYAN ’08

Dan Ryan is a Baltimore-based composer and guitarist who is known for his versatility across genres. A staple of the Baltimore jazz scene, Dan is as comfortable improvising as he is writing pop hooks. Over the years Dan has taken his training and cultivated a career in professional music.

He is a co-frontperson for Super City, a rock band who tours the country regularly and has opened for such acts as Robert Randolph, Parquet Courts, and Bombino. Super City was featured on Maryland Public Television for their performance at WTMD’s First Thursday Festival and has received numerous accolades from the radio station including album of the year for “Sanctuary” in 2019. Dan continues to support his local scene performing with area bands like Outcalls, $100 Girlfriend (as drummer and co-writer), Talking Points, Frenemies, Baltimore Afro-Beat Society, and several others.

GREG WELLHAM ’08

Greg Wellham is a Baltimore-based multi-instrumentalist and composer who has been perfecting his craft since 2004. After graduating from Archbishop Spalding in 2008, he went on to study classical and jazz guitar at Towson University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in music. While at Towson, he was the recipient of the Small Jazz Ensemble Competition Scholarship for his compositions with fellow alum Ines Nassara. He also had the pleasure of performing with prominent jazz musicians such as Ellery Eskelin and Matt Wilson.

Throughout his college years Greg performed with and wrote music for the groups Monteclair and Lush Life. In 2013 he formed Super City as co-frontperson and writer with Spalding graduate and friend Dan Ryan. Shortly after, their debut song “Find You” was featured on NPR’s World Cafe. Since their formation, they have released two albums.

Greg has been teaching professionally since 2012. He has taught a variety of styles to students of all ages, both privately and at Music and Arts. Although he loves teaching, Greg’s true passion is writing, recording and performing his own music.

RJ PAVEL ’09

Between the music and drama program, and the art studio, Rj’s time at Spalding holds some of his favorite memories. After graduation in 2009, Rj moved to Philadelphia and received a BFA in Musical Theatre from The University of the Arts. There, he got his start in photography with various theater photographers in the Philly area and trained as a puppeteer with Enchantment Theatre Co. In 2013, he moved to Florida to puppeteer and perform at Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Busch Gardens. Rj hopped between New York, Orlando, and DC for five years, but for now, has settled in DC. Rj is happy to have recently worked with Constellation Theatre Co. puppeteering in Avenue Q and Little Shop of Horrors, Riverside Center as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, and with Mosaic Theatre Co., where he workshopped and performed in a new play, Les Deux Noirs, which is currently nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for best new work. He has photographed for Monumental Theatre Co, and The Keegan Theatre, and currently shoots marketing content for restaurants and small businesses, as well as larger brands including FlyWheel Sports and WeWork. Much love to Mrs. Hough and Mrs. Tobin!

KATIE REY BOGDAN ’13

Katie Rey Bogdan ‘13 is a performer, director, and dramaturg currently working in the DC area. During her time at Spalding, she performed in 8 productions with Spalding Theatre and sang in three of the choruses under the direction of Mrs. Beth Hough. She graduated in 2017 with her Bachelor’s of Music in Musical Theatre from The Catholic University of America, where she is currently pursuing her Master’s in Theatre History and Criticism. She has performed at The Kennedy Center, DAR Constitution Hall, Round House Theatre, and many other venues in the Baltimore/DC area. She credits the Spalding arts programs with her decision to pursue theatre as a career and is so thankful for the discipline, drive, and passion instilled in her during her 4 years there.

As Archbishop Spalding High School nears our 60th Anniversary in just a few years, we are incredibly fortunate and excited to welcome so many second and third generations of Cavaliers.

Presently we have just shy of 50 students whose parents are alumni, and a handful whose parents AND grandparents are alumni.

Terra Dzambo plays basketball for Marymount University where they were regular season champions. She was named to the Atlantic East Coast Conference 2nd Team.

If your student is a second or third generation Cavalier, please email your photo to weissmuellerj@spaldinghs.org to be included in future updates.
