SPALDING

GIVES

It’s hard to believe that the first quarter of the 2023-2024 academic year is already behind us. During the first few months of the year, we welcomed over 330 new freshmen and their families to the Spalding community. We celebrated and showcased our students' talents in the classroom, in the Engineering Labs, in our Performing Arts Center, and on our courts and fields. Our students have built bonds of friendships in new and existing clubs and activities, and our parents have been welcomed with numerous fellowship opportunities. October brought the biggest displays of Spalding pride. First, our annual Spirit Week and Homecoming festivities brought our students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni together in a series of events that strengthened our Cavalier community. Thousands of members of our Spalding family celebrated our school’s past, present, and future. Our second key October event, our Open House, followed that same theme as we welcomed over 450 perspective families. Showcasing our students, our alums, and our mission, we called upon all to “Become a Cavalier Forever.” Of course, all of this is made possible because of your continued support. Through your time, your talent, and your treasure, you have helped lead our community throughout these past few months. Your efforts create a successful and strong Cavalier community. It is because of you that we are One Spalding that Remains One In Christ.

SCHOOL NEWS Spirit wEEk 2023 A FRESHMAN STORY - Jackie K. I chose to go to Spalding for high school because I loved my shadow days and they truly showed me the happiness and joy of Spalding, but my first Spirit Week here was beyond anything I thought it would be. Everyone, even the teachers, had so much fun dressing up as characters, wearing school colors, and of course, wearing our class colors. Although the excitement from all the dress-down days was amazing, it all led up to Powder Puff. Powder Puff was so fun and although the freshman class did lose, I still had so much fun connecting with my class and being together as a school. Overall, Spirit Week was one of the most fun times I've had at any school, and I thank everyone at Spalding for making Spirit Week as fun as it is.

A SENIOR STORY - Kaitlyn Z. Spirit Week is the most exciting week of the year for every single student at Archbishop Spalding. It is filled with various activities like the homecoming football game, spirit fair, powderpuff, tug of war, and so much more. Each day of Spirit Week is characterized by a specific theme that allows students to connect over shared interests. Whether it’s jersey day, character day, or class color day, it’s so exciting to walk in each morning and see the carefully planned “final looks” that my classmates wear to school. We all paint our faces, spray colored hairspray, and dump glitter to show our school spirit as we are Cavaliers. This year was different than any year prior, as it will be remembered as my final Spalding Spirit Week. This tradition allows us to unify the upper and underclassmen and come together as a school to fulfill our motto, One in Christ. This week creates some of the best memories that will last a lifetime.

A SENIOR STORY - Claire E. As a Senior I've been doing Spirit Week for 4 years. Even though my first year as a Freshman was during Covid, I still felt the Spalding Spirit and camaraderie. This year's Spirt Week was the best thing I could possibly imagine. My classmates went all out dressing up. So much fun! Powder Puff was unbelievable we had custom jerseys a walkout song and the rest of our classmates chanted and cheered us on. The seniors dominated the power puff field pulling out a victory. This moment helped build community and made our senior class united.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT Since the school year began, the Alumni Engagement Office has been hard at work engaging with our vast alumni network. Chances are you have received an email, invitation, or seen a social media post from our office. Here is a quick summary of some of the things we’ve been working on to bring our Spalding family closer together:

Class Reunions One of the cornerstones of Alumni Engagement is the cherished tradition of Class Reunions. Given the unique challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, some of our beloved reunions had to be postponed. However, the Alumni Engagement team is committed to ensuring that every class can celebrate their milestone reunions. This year, we've successfully organized four reunions and are already planning 11 to 12 more for the upcoming year, especially for those classes whose graduation years end in '4 or '9. It's a wonderful opportunity for alumni to reconnect and relive cherished memories.

Cavaliers Connect is one of our most ambitious initiatives. Instead of expecting alumni to return to Spalding, we're going out to meet them in their communities. We've already had successful alumni gatherings in Boston, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. In the coming months, we're planning visits to Tampa, Houston, Philadelphia, New York City, Charlotte, Charleston, and Ocean City. This program is about connecting Spalding alms, no matter where they are.

Continuing Traditions Spalding has been dedicated to upholding beloved traditions that the community knows and loves. The Homecoming Alumni Tailgate was a resounding success, with over 150 enthusiastic Spalding supporters braving less-than-ideal weather. Another event we continued this year was "Cavs Come Home," which welcomed our newer alumni back to campus just before Christmas. It's a time for them to reconnect with peers, enjoy Spalding's cafeteria food, reunite with their teachers, and share their accomplishments and goings on. One of our most exciting updates is that we've digitized all of our yearbooks. Soon, you'll be able to explore the rich history of Spalding through these digital yearbooks on our website, allowing you to take a nostalgic journey down memory lane. Looking ahead to 2024, we have more exciting events in the pipeline. We're planning a business networking event on campus and a unique Golden Cavalier event for those celebrating their 50th reunion this year. Keep an eye out for more details on these events in the coming months.

For more information on all upcoming events, visit our website at archbishopspalding.org. We encourage all alumni to get involved and stay connected with our growing Spalding family. Together, we're continuing to create a legacy that will be celebrated for years to come.

ADVANCEMENT UPDATES

Spalding Endowment Endowing a scholarship is often the start of a ripple effect of philanthropy, as recipients are very likely to ‘pay it forward’ in their futures. For many donors, the most rewarding part of creating an endowed scholarship is the ability to meet each recipient, often developing lifelong relationships. We currently have 6 endowed scholarships. Please visit our website, for more details https://www.archbishopspalding.org/support/endowment

Event Recap A big thank you to all our guests who attended our first Cavalier Crab Feast. We hope you all enjoyed the amazing crabs and great company! We really enjoyed the crab feast! Events such as this are an important part of bringing parents, alumni, etc together and help instill a sense of community. I was standing in line for crabs next to a guy I didn't know and he remarked that he didn't know what this was a fundraiser for but it must be a good cause. Success will be when people attend not because it is a fundraiser but because they believe in Spalding and want to be a part of the Spalding community. Looking forward to seeing what's next. I attached a photo I took. I call it "these crustations gave their lives for a worthy cause." Karl Eser
