Spalding Winter 2021

2020 – 2021 Annual Report

Letter from the

President

Friends, Welcome to Archbishop Spalding High School’s 2020-2021 Annual Report. It is with pride and a great deal of gratitude and humility that we share this issue that highlights the generous support of our donors, a snapshot of Spalding’s finances, alumni spotlights, class notes and more. A mere thank you, though heartfelt, cannot express our appreciation for the people in our lives who stepped up in the midst of COVID-19 economic uncertainty with continued financial support. Current and past parents, alumni, current students, faculty and staff - you’ll see them all throughout this publication. Our alumni continue to bring pride to the red and white. In the pages to follow you will learn about an alumna who invested in her alma mater to ensure that the ClearEdge Innovation Center became a reality. And you’ll read about a member of the Class of 2015 whose gift for conversation and sheer determination have helped him launch a career in broadcast journalism. Go Cavs! Last but certainly not least, I want to thank the Spalding families who have trusted us with your daughters and sons especially over the last year and a half. Thank you for believing in us and our Catholic mission. And on behalf of the faculty and staff, I wish you a joyful Christmas with a new year filled with God’s abundant blessings.

One in Christ, Kathleen K. Mahar President

The impact of your gifts was celebrated in May when 300 students graduated from Archbishop Spalding. The ceremony was held on campus at Whittles Field with families, friends, faculty and staff in attendance. As each graduate proudly walked across the stage to receive their diploma, we were reminded that a Spalding education has the potential to transform lives. We thank you for believing in them and investing in them. We continue to watch the Class of 2021 grow and learn as they make their goals and dreams a reality.

Service

Service is an important part of a student’s journey at Spalding. We ask our students to enter into charity and emerge with questions, and hopefully solutions, for a just and better world. Last school year service hours were waived due to difficulties posed by COVID-19. That, however, did not stop the Class of 2021 from continuing to do good for others. The class as a whole served 19,855 hours, 8,825 of those hours were in outreach settings.

Donor Spotlight Christine Dixon Puglisi ‘85 has made a tremendous impact at Archbishop Spalding High School. Many know of our new, impressive, ClearEdge Innovation Center, named after her company, but few know the story behind the name. Christy graduated from Martin Spalding High School in 1985, at a time when our academics were drastically different than they are now. She remarks that her experience was “good”, and while she learned a lot, she did not participate in Honors courses, extracurriculars, or anything beyond her very traditional course load. Christy remembers taking keyboarding and the very first computer course offered at Spalding. Upon graduation, Christy enrolled at Loyola University and began a new parttime job at the local Fort Meade Government Agency. She learned of the work opportunity through an ad in the local paper. After a few months of balancing both opportunities, Christy felt she was getting more out of the hands-on learning she was receiving in the workplace, and decided to go full-time. She went the path of certifications, just-in-time training and self-taught continuing education so that she could continue gaining that real world experience at work.

Pictured with Christy (center) is her son Anthony ‘20 and PLTW Department Chair, Amy Brunner

“Being a younger female, and not having traditional college degrees, it seemed overwhelming to open my own business within the Intelligence Community. Instead, I worked my way up through the ranks in smaller companies,” remarked Christy. Several men in the industry asked her to partner up, as the lack of women-owned businesses became more of a focus in the community. Christy had a business partnership, but as her fears of what she could NOT do as a female in the industry went away, she decided to forge her own path. ClearEdge IT Solutions was born in August 2002, shortly after the birth of her son Anthony (who graduated from Spalding in 2020). The company grew to 10 employees in its first year and has at one point reached 109 employees servicing government contracts in software engineering, big data, cloud, data analytics, and data science solutions and services. After founding the Fort Meade Small Business Park as a place for fellow small business owners to have their first offices, Christy realized the company had outgrown their first office space and went on to acquire a large office building in Jessup in 2009. When Christy was reintroduced to Spalding 7 years ago, it was through a business associate and fellow Spalding alum. From her first time returning to campus, she was blown away by the difference she saw, “to have been gone from Spalding for so long, I came back without a huge connection and I could see from the second I walked in that the caliber of the students and faculty are something special.” Through Christy’s re-engagement she saw the need for continued improvements at Spalding, noting that it is difficult for private schools to keep up with their public school counterparts, especially in the area of technology. After touring the campus, she was amazed by what the Project Lead the Way Engineering teachers were able to accomplish in their old space, and was impassioned to enhance their capabilities. In 2017, Christy and ClearEdge IT Solutions pledged to give $1 million to make the new STEM center a reality! “There is a tremendous excitement I get in seeing the type of education that Spalding students are receiving now. It is hands-on and engaging, and is truly preparing them for what they will experience in college or in the workplace at companies like ClearEdge.” Christy invites other community members and her intelligence community peers to visit the Innovation Center and learn more. It is her sincere hope that other local employers will help bring their own mark to this thriving program at Spalding. 11

How to Make Your Gift to Archbishop Spalding Parents, alumni and friends often ask how they can support The Spalding Fund and how their contributions benefit the students. A wide range of giving options with possible tax benefits are available. Gifts may be tailored to express the donor’s interest. The Office of Advancement is available to discuss these possibilities with you.

Spalding Fund Giving Opportunities Cash

Matching Gifts

Securities

Cash gifts are immediately available for use by the school.

More than 10,000 employers will match gifts to Spalding.

Cash gifts may be unrestricted or restricted to special projects as agreed to by the school and the donor.

Your gift will have greater impact if your employer provides matching funds for charitable giving. This is a great way to double your support for the school.

Appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds can be donated to Spalding and may be deducted at full market value on the date of transfer.

This type of gift allows you to avoid payment of capital gains tax on the appreciated security.

Gifts of cash may be made in a single payment or pledged with multiple payments throughout the school’s fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. Cash gifts may be paid by either personal check or charging the contribution through your Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover card.

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match charitable contributions made by their employees. To find out if your company matches, you may use the search tool available on our website. Then simply follow the set procedure that your company provides, and Archbishop Spalding High School will be happy to assist. The impact of your gift may be doubled or even tripled. Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

If you are interested in making this kind of contribution, please contact your broker and the Advancement Office for instructions.

Planned Gifts One easy and effective way to have a big impact on Spalding’s future, without feeling the big impact on your checkbook NOW is to consider making a planned gift. The most common type of planned gift is one made through your will or trust. Like all forms of planned gifts, these can be unrestricted or designated to the program/department of your choice. Other opportunities to support Spalding include retirement planned gifts made by naming us as a beneficiary in your 401(k), 403(b) or IRA, life insurance gifts made by listing us as a beneficiary on your existing or new policy, and gifts of real estate via a direct donation of your property or retained life estate which allows you to continue residing on the property through you and your spouse’s lifetime. Charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts are two more options that can provide you with great tax benefits and generate additional income for you.

Donor Advised Funds If you/your family have an existing donor advised fund, a giving vehicle established at a public charity, please consider supporting the Spalding Fund by recommending us as one of your grant recipients. The Advancement Office welcomes the opportunity to share how your generosity can have an immediate impact on our school and our students. Please contact us to learn more about our current initiatives.

For further information on these types of giving opportunities, it is recommended you consult your attorney or tax advisor on any legal matter. This information is not intended as specific legal advice. Also, it is important to note, when making a capital or deferred gift, we encourage donors to begin by first communicating their intentions to the school. 22

Thank You Volunteerism is important in cultivating our vibrant community of learners. Contributions of time and talent enable our school to thrive. Your generosity supports the people and programs that make our school so special.

Cavalier Open & Love/Graziano Golf Tournaments

Archbishop Spalding hosts two golf tournaments – the Cavalier Open, held each fall to support Spalding Athletics, and the Love/Graziano Golf Tournament, held each summer to fund the Lt. James Love Memorial Scholarship and the Captain John Graziano Memorial Scholarship. Both events are full of fun and fellowship while providing critical funds that the school relies upon. The parent and alumni volunteers listed helped to organize the successful tournaments last year.

Robotics Team

The FIRST Robotics competition has been an increasingly popular extracurricular for Spalding students. Student participants are given the opportunity to combine the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology when they are tasked to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors while under strict time constraints. An important component to this process is the volunteer professional mentors who lend their time and talents to guide each team.

Spalding Gala

The largest fundraiser that Spalding hosts is our annual Gala. The event, held in March, features a live and silent auction, games of chance, and equally important, an opportunity for parents, alumni, and friends of Spalding to celebrate our school and show their support. The Gala committee devotes many hours to make sure the event runs smoothly from start to finish and accomplishes the overarching goal of enhancing the programs and facilities at Spalding.

Alumni Spotlight

Joseph Olmo ‘15 Where has life taken you since graduating from Spalding? It’s been a roller coaster. I graduated from Spalding in 2015. Fresh out of high school, I had my eyes set on being a broadcast journalist, but had no idea where to start. Anne Arundel Community College seemed like a step in the right direction. Fast forward to 2018 -- I was accepted into the Catholic University of America (CUA), packed my bags up, and said farewell to Annapolis; the city I had called “home” for 21 years. It just so happens, though, that Washington D.C., with its combination of national politics and local news is the perfect place for an aspiring reporter to be. I graduated CUA in December 2020, with a major in Media and Communications Studies.

Explain how you got into broadcasting and what you’re doing now. NBC Nightly News and WBAL were appointment-viewing in the Olmo household. I remember eating dinner or doing homework at the kitchen table and listening to Brian Williams’ crisp voice in the background or hearing the latest DMV news from a WBAL newscast. It immediately sparked an interest, to the point where my mother would come home, and it wouldn’t be out of the norm to find her son dressed up in a suit and reading headlines from a newspaper. That desire to do TV news stuck with me all the way through my time at Spalding. Every time I got a small taste of what it was like to be a reporter, I only wanted it more. So, in 2018, I got started. I reached out to the editor of a Facebook page called The Arundel Patriot. While scrolling through social media, I saw they were conducting interviews with candidates running in the Midterm Elections. I met with Vicky Bruce, the editor of that page, and not long after, started interviewing candidates ranging from school board, all the way up to governor. While out on assignment, I met a producer for Central America TV (CATV), a network that broadcasts content for America’s Hispanic population. Shortly after, I started freelancing for CATV, and was eventually sent to San Salvador, El Salvador in 2019 to cover the inauguration of then-President-Elect, Nayib Bukele. Later on in 2019, I started freelancing for a health and wellness show, Tu Salud Tu Familia, which airs on 27

Telemundo 44 (WZDC-TV). And in 2020, I landed the job that I have right now. After lots of networking, and some pretty lucky breaks, I was hired as evening news co-anchor of WDVM 25. Our station broadcasts in parts of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and D.C. I anchor our nightly newscasts from 5pm-11:30pm, and also step out of the studio every couple of weeks to report on location.

What do you like most about your job? I thoroughly enjoy storytelling. My favorite part about being a journalist is the fact that you’re in charge of how a story gets told (that same component, though, carries a lot of responsibility to portray both sides, especially when reporting on something as polarizing as politics). There’s something incredibly special about researching a story, writing questions, shooting an interview, and (my all-time favorite) crafting the final product by editing the story. It doesn’t matter whether your audience is five thousand people, or five million. What truly matters is the impact that your story can have on those who watch it. I want all of our viewers to (at the very least) feel like they learned something new when they watch, and it’s an even greater honor when the story results in some sort of action from the audience.

Was there a person/teacher/class that had an influence on you? Spalding’s diverse curriculum undoubtedly molded me into a well-rounded student. With that being said, the Foreign Language Department holds a special place in my heart. Ms. Dando, Mrs. Shockley, and Mrs. Esposito are all teachers who I credit with implementing something in me that still carries on to this day: the desire to fluently speak another language. I cannot stress enough just how important being able to read, write, and speak Spanish has been in both my professional and personal life, and I credit my former Spanish teachers at Spalding with instilling in me the importance of learning a second language.

Do you feel that Spalding prepared you for college? Yes, and I am so grateful to Mr. Calderone in the college counseling department for helping me in the CUA application process even after I had graduated from Spalding.

What advice would you give to students? The best way to get ahead in life is to get STARTED! Give praise to the Lord, not just in the bad times, but in the good, too. And remember: not a single thing on the face of this planet is unachievable when you firmly establish your goals, outline your game plan, and follow through with consistency, determination, and humility.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What is free time?! Whenever I get a breather, I enjoy golfing, reading, and most importantly, spending time with family and friends. Making memories. Every moment that passes is a moment you’ll never get back. Use your time wisely. When I’m able to take off for a more extended period of time, you’ll almost always find me escaping to Latin America, especially to El Salvador or Colombia.
