Fall House /

Fougeron Architecture

This three-bedroom home, on Big Sur’s spectacular south coast, is anchored in the natural beauty and power of this California landscape. Our design strategy embeds the building within the land, creating a structure inseparable from its context. The site offers dramatic views: a 250-foot drop to the Pacific Ocean both along the bluff and the western exposure. Yet it demands a form more complex than a giant picture window. The long, thin volume conforms and deforms to the natural contours of the land and the geometries of the bluff,

much like the banana slug native to the region’s seaside forests. In this way, the complex structural system applies and defies natural forms to accommodate the siting. The house is cantilevered 12 feet back from the bluff, both to protect the cliff’s delicate ecosystem and to ensure the structure’s integrity and safety. The interior is a shelter, a refuge in contrast with the roughness and immense scale of the ocean and cliff. The house also shields the southern outdoor spaces from the powerful winds that blow from the northwest.

Archetech - Issue 22 [Page 8]

The main body of the house is composed of two rectangular boxes connected by an all-glass library/den. The main entry is located at the top of the upper volume with the living spaces unfolding from the most public to the most private. The living room kitchen and dining room are an open plan with subtle changes in levels and roof planes to differentiate the various functions. The lower volume, a double-cantilevered master bedroom suite, acts as a promontory above the ocean, offering breath-taking views from its floor-toceiling windows. The link between these two volumes is the glass library/den; it is the hearth of the house, a room that

unites the house inside and out both with its geometry and its transparency. A one-story concrete wing perpendicular to the house includes a ground-floor bedroom, building services and a green roof; it is the boulder locking the house to the land. The house has two main facades, the south one is clad in copper which wraps up the wall and over on the roof. Copper clad roof overhangs protect windows and the front door from the sun and the wind of the ocean. The faรงade to the north is made all glass; clear expanses of glass open the house to the view.

Natural daylight in all rooms including bathrooms is tailored to solar orientation and reduces power loads from artificial lighting. Primary daylight is indirect and comes from the north while southern light limited and mitigated by automatic shading system.

Low E, solar control glazing is insulated and set into a thermally broken custom steel frame. This high performance glazing reduces solar gain, improves winter comfort, and offers superior thermal performance without sacrificing views.

Radiant hydronic heat eliminates ductwork and allows lower operating temperatures and higher occupant comfort levels. Energy usage is significantly lower and more efficient than traditional forced air systems.

Stack ventilation is naturally facilitated by the building layout. The open floor plan is connected on multiple levels from the lower master bedroom suite to the entry at a higher elevation. Automatically controlled operable glazing at the lowest level is coordinated with an exhaust transfer grille at the highest elevation. The pressure and height differential allows the exhaustion of hot air and intake of cool fresh air.

Drought resistant and native vegetation is specifically intended reduce soil erosion and facilitates new habitats for local wildlife. A vegetated roof reduces the aerial visual footprint of the building and provides added thermal mass / insulation for the occupied space below.

On-site wastewater treatment through a septic system paired with efficient plumbing fixtures reduces loads to municipal sewer systems and differentiates black and grey water. Conversely, fresh water is garnered from an on-site stream that is also not dependent on municipal systems.

Low VOC & sustainable finishes were primary considerations to ensure the highest interior air quality and responsible use of finish materials. The interior paint and other interior finishes are all low VOC. Wall and ceiling insulation is formaldehyde free denim.

Uppgrenna Nature House / Tailor Made arkitekter

A maximum ecofriendly meetingplace with cafe, conferencerooms ang therapytreatments. A spa and conference building in Uppgrenna, Sweden. An existing red barn was demolished and replaced by a modern building with ground floor partly submerged in the slope. The upper entrance level consists of an insulated building partly surrounded by an unheated greenhouse that extend over the entire roof. The greenhouse contain room for plant beds and shelter terraces with expansive views of Lake V채ttern and a climate similar to Northern Italy. The Nature House Concept The Nature House concept (or Naturhus in Swedish) was developed by Swedish architect Bengt Warne in the 1970s.

The exterior is portrayed with inspiration from traditional Swedish barn houses, with its simple ports and shutters. All windows and doors fitted with shutters in a red wooden panel wall. It creates dynamism to the faรงade and reduces heat radiation when the house is not used. Sewage Recycling System The greenhouse allows for a closed local loop of recycling sewage waste. Large plant beds cleanse and take up nutrients in the wastewater and converts it to fruit and vegetables. The house does not require connection to the municipal sewer. Living in a greenhouse encourages a sustainable and non-toxic lifestyle. It becomes very clear why you should not emit pollutants in the environment, it turns back in to your own recycling system.

The houses consists of a core - a living area, that is surrounded by a shell of glass - a greenhouse. The greenhouse sets the insulated inner core in a warmer climate and provides sheltered "outdoor space" from the cold northern winter. It gives you the possibility to grow plants from warmer climate zones and preheats air for ventilation. The vision is to make a self sustainable house that produce food, instead of waste. Houses that generate energy, instead of only consuming it and, ultimately, living spaces that induce reflection and learning thus influencing the behavior of inhabitants towards sustainability. It is important to note that BIM is not just about buildings, but in its wildest context is being applied to facility, building, road, railway, and infrastructure projects. It is also now very much impacting organisations throughout the supply chain including manufacturers, fabricators and interior designers. The word ‘building’ in itself also doesn’t necessarily describe the full scope of a project – it doesn’t cover policies, assumptions, strategic decisions, supply chain, specification, user assessment, regulation and recycling sustainability. All are key parts of the projects ‘information model’ and should be included in the creation of the facility or asset information as the project progresses. BIM covers all aspects of the project lifecycle and is being driven by UK Government, to ensure that all public sector projects are under-pinned by the creation, collation and exchange or shared 3D models and intelligent

structured data that is attached to them. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016, which defines a series of domain models and the provision of a single electronic environment to store shared data and information. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016. Making the right choices to begin your BIM journey and maximise the return on your investment is critical. Man and Machine offer a variety of solutions and services to help you understand the impact of BIM and the market opportunity that it presents throughout the supply chain. The solutions and services include BIM-based products, modelling and measurement solutions, BIM deployment programs, training and consultancy. X-Float / Agaligo Studio

Aside from the lush, mountainous landscape and famous River Kwai Bridge, Karnchanaburi is well known for its floating houses and rafts. Floating on the river, these distinctive structures greatly differentiate Karnchanaburi from any other provinces in Thailand. X-Float is a creation that enhances the fascination of the River Kwai’s floating houses with a different paradigm of design and comfort. The unique accommodation is designed in addition to the Project X2 River Kwai Resort. X-Float’s design resembles a volumetric evolution of a raft, a primitive man-made floating platform, from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional – to a livable unit. This makes X-Float a crossbreed of vernacular and modern architecture. During construction, to completely eliminate disturbances to guests who were residing in the already operating X2 Resort, X-Float’s floating units were built offsite and only towed for installation once completed. Situated at the river bend, all units are oriented such that their river views are maximized and such that they are as much as possible shielded from the harsh, tropical afternoon sunlight.

Page 33 - Archetech

The balance in load, air, and water is the critical underlying principle that keeps X-Float afloat and steady enough for guests to enjoy their stay without getting motion sickness. The main structure of X-Float is made out of lightweight steel framing, cladded with fiber cement siding and plywood. Wastewater and sewage are properly treated before being released into the natural river. To facilitate water filtration and reinforce the surrounding ecosystem, aquatic plants such as reed, papyrus, and pondweed are replanted around the site. Architects

The versatile choice for architectural design RMIG Expanded Metal is a light, versatile and attractive choice for building applications because of its aesthetic qualities and the creative freedom it offers. Expanded metal from RMIG has become increasingly popular among architects for its wide spectrum of aesthetic and functional advantages, and is often the ideal choice when working with materials such as concrete, steel and glass. It can be used for both practical and decorative purposes and it offers architects a new level of creative freedom when designing applications such as facade cladding, sun screens, ceilings, fencing and protective screening. The high strength and anti-skid qualities also make expanded metal the best choice for walkways, platforms and similar applications. RMIG Expanded Metal has a modern yet timeless look, and creates the possibility of designing unique and eye-catching shapes and expressions – yet another reason why architects favour this versatile product. RMIG has its own production facilities for expanded metal where sheets are manufactured from, for example, aluminium or steel. The expansion of the metal takes place in one efficient production process. Expanded metal is made in one piece without joints or welds, which makes it ideal for forming, pressing and cutting. There is no metal lost in the process and, as expanded metal is also virtually maintenance-free, this increases the costeffectiveness of the material. Combined with its high strength and outstanding anti-skid qualities, there are many valid reasons for using expanded metal. Visit www.city-emotion.com or email info.uk@rmig.com

THE WHITWORTH

A MASTERPIECE IN BRICK AND GLASS Archetech - Page 36

Since its reopening in February 2015, Manchester’s Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, has ‘wowed’ the architectural world with its new extension and renovation. Already the £15 million redevelopment has received a list of accolades, including the BDA Brick Awards 2015 ‘Supreme Award’ and ‘Best Public and Education Building’, The Art Fund Prize of ‘Museum of the Year’ and the RIBA National Award 2015. The building was also amongst six elite projects shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize.

According to Whitworth Director Maria Balshaw CBE, the expansion project has "unlocked the potential" of the building leading to a record number of visitors to the gallery. Founded in 1889 as the first English gallery in a park, the Whitworth has undergone several stages of

development and refurbishments over the last 126 years in its journey from private residence to public art gallery. This had resulted in the somewhat inefficient and muddled use of interior space and the previously blank west end of building facing the park being unresolved and of lesser quality.

The Design Brief In 2009 an open architectural competition to remodel the Whitworth was launched. The design brief was to make the gallery’s internationally important collection of fine art, textiles and wallpaper more accessible to a wider range of visitors, to make better use of the existing gallery spaces and to establish a relationship with the surrounding grounds and park. McInnes Usher McKnight Architects (MUMA), who won the competition (over 138 other entries) have certainly achieved that. Their acclaimed design has re-ordered the existing gallery spaces and also expanded the building by one third whilst doubling the publically accessible space and creating a new entrance that connects the gallery with the surrounding park. At the heart of this physical transformation is the creation of an elegant glass, stainless steel and brick extension, including two new wings, which extend into the park from the back of the existing building. The two wings are connected by a glass promenade gallery, which wraps the existing exhibition galleries providing a vantage point from which to view the art garden and park beyond. To the south is the transparent slender café wing, a cantilevered glass structure, which houses the café and Learning Studio and is designed to sit along the trees of Whitworth Park overlooking the newly designed Art Garden. To the north the taller solid brick built form of the Landscape Gallery, with its grand high-level window and ground floor Study Centre, provides an urban edge as well as a visual and acoustic buffer, which counterbalances the lighter structure of the transparent glass café and promenade with its slender stainless steel mullions.

Extraordinary Brickwork

Working closely with the architects, Northcot produced several sample blends and brick panels to finalise the bespoke ‘Whitworth Blend’.

The new brick was based on existing smooth faced blends (Avon Smooth and Victorian Mellow), which were then darkened with re-cycled Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) and the use of special ‘setting patterns’ in the kiln. Traditional firing in one of the last remaining coal-fired kilns in the country ensured a natural subtlety of tone throughout. “Reflecting the craftsmanship evident in Beaumont’s galleries, the extension combines modern construction techniques with contemporary craftsmanship throughout, manifest in the brickwork patterns and handmade special bricks.” write MUMA. “As MUMA expect the very highest standards, we knew we had to get the tone and texture of both the machine made bricks and handmade specials absolutely spot on,” said Northcot works manager Dale Moss.

Page 37 - Archetech

Integral to the redevelopment is the impressive red brickwork of the expansive north wing and the lower ground levels, which comprises approximately 90,000 smooth machine made bricks, giving continuity to the extension from the original Beaumont building and an important visual link to the city’s industrial past.

The imposing north façade features an intricate ‘slash and stich’ brickwork pattern, which draws inspiration from fabrics within the gallery’s extensive textile collection. This is made from a variety of handmade ‘special’ bricks, which link together to give the impression of interwoven textile threads and torn fabric, which has been stitched back together. Northcot Brick, a manufacturer known for its advanced colour-matching expertise and traditional bench-mould techniques that have hardly changed over the centuries, was invited to create a bespoke blend to complement the original dark red bricks of the Edwardian building.

A total of twenty-three different nonstandard brick types and special shapes were created from architectural drawings, ranging from bespoke piers, to the angled doglegs which make up much the slash and stitch-work on the north wing. “Each special shape and design required bespoke wooden moulds and a high level of craftsmanship, which was delivered by our most experienced master brickmakers and skilled handthrowers, each with over twenty years of experience,” said Dale.

Outstanding structure The result is an outstanding building, which is not only a testament to MUMA’s remarkable design, vision and originality, but to the standards of craftsmanship involved in its construction. “We believe that this exciting redevelopment is one of the most influential and inspiring architectural projects of this decade, which will enable the Whitworth to remain one of the UK’s foremost art galleries for many years to come,” said Jo Beggs, the Whitworth’s Head of Development.

Lower level, Higher living Focusing on all aspects of basement construction, including structural calculations production, Glatthaar Fertigkeller prides itself on working meticulously hard to complete approximately 3,200 basement builds a year. The country’s leading industry specialist was founded more than three decades ago by the enterprising Joachim Glatthaar and holds its headquarters in South West Germany. The brand has come a long way since its inception over thirty years back. It has developed from a one man company to the number one basement builder in Europe operating with 528 employees. We have facilities spanning Germany, England, Austria and Switzerland and our clients come from anywhere from Moscow to London.

Glatthaar create pre-fabricated basements for new build and extension purposes, glatthaar build's completely watertight cellars and are renowned in the industry for the speed of their construction. Glatthaar is the only basement building company in England that provides a basement system compared to using third party components, and as all work is done in-house, there are no contractors involved.

The team works effectively by combining the most technologically advanced offsite manufacturing process with well-organised on-site installation techniques. Their computer controlled, partially automated factories produce a quality product. The Glatthaar Fertigkeller package is full-ranging; it includes all working/ installation drawings and structural calculations ready for Building Control approval, and a project manager is assigned to individual projects for increased efficiency. Although basements are conventionally considered to be rooms concealed under the ground, this isn’t actually always the case, a basement does not have to be fully underground, for example,

if you are planning a new build in an area that is liable to flooding, you could plan the basement to be partially above ground level giving you the security that up to this height your basement/ ground floor is watertight. If you would like any more information on this exceptional brand then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Glatthaar Fertigkeller. The team are contactable via the mediums below or can be found promoting their services at various industry-specific trade shows – we regularly attending Ecobuild at the ExCeL London and the Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC in Birmingham and Sandown Park in Surrey.

Eco-Modern Coupdeville specialise in high end new build residences, in a changing climate and to meet the growing need for sustainability and energy efficiency in the building industry, combined with shortened build times, SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) is an ideal medium for matching these requirements. The standard concept by which SIPS are used is for mass produced generic looking buildings that follow a traditional look. Coupdeville’s ethos of making individual, bespoke houses that respond to the clients needs, the brief and the surroundings in a unique manner has been blended with

a prefabricated means of construction to make the unique residences displayed in this article. Our experience & detailing allows for the solidly and quality feel of masonry construction with ecological credentials to complete the package, at a cost effective price.

Fairfax - Strawberry Hill. Coupdeville created this substantial family home of 5,000 square feet split over three storeys and a basement. The design was conceived as a series of stepped, framed boxes. The interaction of the forms provides a series of terraces and overhangs, which breaks up its massing and adds articulation to the elevations. The clerestories between the ground and first floors add to this feeling of spatial interplay and allows daylight to penetrate deeper into the space. From the street this series of step backs draw the eye up the building to a pavilion-like second floor master suite which is set back on all sides.

Archetech - Page 40

Timber louvres set into the frames providing shade and privacy, and also mediate the transition between the solid walls and the floor to ceiling glazing. Planting on the front facade also serves to soften its appearance while providing screening in selected areas.

Hilltop The contemporary scheme was conceived as two stacked, offset, L-shaped volumes that taper. The upper volume of the house extends and retracts over the ground floor, the intersection between these two levels creates dynamic cantilevers and setbacks that seek to open up the views from the property and provide subtle private enclosures to rooms within. This relationship is further emphasised by the contrast of external finishes of light render and dark porcelain. These hung facades conceal the services and rainwater pipes within, creating a cleaner external appearance. Large projecting glazed openings overlook the courtyard and garden; these are boldy framed with pressed metal and are louvred in red cedar. The projections to the front and back are separated with a frameless glass box detail that returns at roof level, this lets light flood in and makes a visual separation between the framed elements composing a balance in its overall feel and appearance.

YORK HANDMADE BUILDS STRONG FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE The York Handmade Brick Company, one of the leading independent brickmakers in the country, has celebrated a tremendous 2015 – and is now looking forward to an equally successful year this year. York Handmade, based in the beautiful Vale of York in North Yorkshire, recorded a 11 per cent increase in turnover last year and won a major prize in the prestigious 2015 Brick Awards.

Archetech - Page 42

David Armitage, chairman of York Handmade, commented: “2015 was one of our most successful years since our foundation in 1988. We had a turnover of £2.5 million, an increase of 11 per cent on the previous year, and we now employ 30 staff. That is our highest level of staffing since pre-recession days. “This success has been built on a number of flagship, high-quality jobs across the country. These include Highgate School in north London, a new control and office room at Turweston Flight Centre in Northamptonshire and the redevelopment of London Bridge Station in the shadow of the iconic Shard (which also boasts our bricks). “We also played a pivotal role in the construction of four new luxury homes just outside Cambridge. In addition we are also involved in the development of the new Halifax Central Library, which

includes restoration of part of the church adjacent to Piece Hall in the town, and the regeneration of the famous Westgate Shopping Centre in Oxford. “It is no coincidence that many of our most high-profile projects are being done with Maxima our popular and distinctive linear brick, which is gaining an increasing amount of interest as it represents the new style of brickwork. It is an exciting breakthrough aesthetically for the brick industry,” said Mr Armitage. Meanwhile the company’s work at Dumfries House in Scotland won the Best Outdoor Space category in the 2015 Brick Awards for its “magnificent achievement” in restoring the Belvedere and Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden at Dumfries House in Scotland, a pioneering restoration project masterminded by Prince Charles. In addition the Belvedere was shortlisted in the Craftsmanship and Best Refurbishment Project categories, while York Handmade was also nominated for its work on Carmelite House on London’s Victoria Embankment.

The Brick Awards’ judges commented: “This project could be considered a winner over several categories. It is absolutely stunning, a magnificent achievement. The five-acre walled garden was derelict and within a twelve-month period the garden has been transformed into one of the most interesting walled gardens in this country.” York Handmade has a tremendous track record in the Brick Awards, winning a hat-trick of categories in 2012. The buildings which won the awards were: Four Oaks in Little Bedwyn, Wilts (Best Single House); Tupgill Cellar, near Middleham, North Yorkshire (Best Craftsmanship); and Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester (Specialist Brickwork Contractor). TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION UNIQUE INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO CONSTRUCTION

reduced build times translate into time and cost savings.

Danilith brings a unique and innovative approach to any self build or development project.

NO HOLD-UPS FOR WEATHER

Bespoke design, traditional appearance, quality materials and hand finishing combine with solid insulated walls and floors, excellent air tightness, and high thermal mass to ensure an efficient, comfortable environment throughout the year. Danilith Delmulle has built over 15,000 bespoke homes in Belgium and neighbouring European Countries. Now through Danilith UK this unique factory built traditional construction system is available in the UK. Danilith’s unique method of construction creates brick faced insulated panels, with external windows and doors fitted with bespoke bluestone detailing. This results in a fast accurate build with low air leakage and good thermal mass.

SPEED COMBINED WITH QUALITY Factory built construction allows a greater control of quality and consistency than traditional build. Using a unique approach, brick faced insulated concrete panels are assembled in computer controlled factory conditions. Solid walls & floors and high levels of insulation produce superior robust dwellings with improved SAP ratings, better sound attenuation, excellent air tightness and balanced thermal characteristics. Windows and doors are built into the panels during manufacture ensuring great air tightness. Creating traditional finishes in a controlled environment ensures a high quality product. Bricks are selected and mixed by hand, then robotically placed to give a consistent appearance to all

Because of the bespoke way our buildings are constructed virtually any design can be created using the Danilith system. The standard brick finish can be omitted to accommodate any combination of render, timber or composite cladding.

THERMAL MASS EFFECT Heat energy is stored more efficiently in high density structures such as concrete than in low density structures such as timber frame. Thermal Mass will regulate the internal temperature so while outside temperatures may vary considerably between day and night or through the seasons, the internal temperature remains stable thus reducing the need for energy to heat and preventing overheating. Keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Optimal benefits from a Danilith dwelling can be achieved by the use of under floor heating systems and a smart ventilation system, improving air quality and removing excess moisture.

JIS Europe Ltd are proud to present the Sussex Range of Stainless Steel Towel Rails. We first introduced the Sussex Range to the market in 1998 and at that time although there were ladder rails on the market we were unique in that the rails were manufactured from 100% Stainless Steel. Where we led, others followed, however being the forerunners has given us the experience and ultimately quality control over this exceptional material. Stainless steel is 100% recyclable and manufactured from over 90% recyclable material. It will not rust, flake or corrode. It is the ecological, durable choice and can be used in all systems including open systems. We offer three formats of rail throughout our Range: Electric, dual fuel and central heating only. We are also able to offer both polished and satin finishes thereby giving you the ultimate flexibility

within your heating as well as visual requirements. The cornerstones of our business are quality, stock holding and ultimately, customer service. The three work hand in hand. We offer an extensive range of sizes and accessories, and constantly strive to bring new and interesting product to the market, whilst always marrying practicality and durability with design aesthetic. We have always maintained a policy of stockholding and all orders are dispatched for next day delivery when ordered before midday. This added to our extensive product range, only goes to further improve the service we are able to offer. Our staff are first and foremost friendly, polite and efficient. Furthermore they are knowledgeable and able to deal with

your queries. We do not operate call waiting systems and there will always be a willing and friendly person on the other end of the line ready to assist you. We have a large selection of gallery shots, showing the visual diversity of our rails, on our website www.sussexrange.co.uk. Comfortable in both a modern and contemporary bathroom as well as the traditional. We think you will be impressed by the diversity of the images shown. Please do visit. We are confident you will be happy with your purchase and are pleased to offer a 25 year guarantee. Should you wish any further details, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01444 831200 or info@jiseurope.co.uk

NeoLith Latest News Neolith’s Sintered Compact Surface Available in 14 Full-Body Colors and 30 Digital Designs Neolith, a brand of all-natural, premium sintered compact surfaces for kitchen and bathroom worktops, flooring, interior wall cladding applications and exterior facades, has extended its Collections to include 30 stone, wood and metal decors enhanced with Neolith Digital Design (NDD) printing. Together with 14 full-body colours Neolith provides architects and designers with a comprehensive offering of ontrend designs combined with the inherent strength of sintered compact surfaces.

Archetech - Page 58

Neolith comes in 14 full-body colours, which carry the colour and pattern through the entire thickness of the slab. From bright orange, green and blue, to deep browns and stone-inspired grays, such models are ideal for thin worktops with no stylistic need for mitering. Neolith slabs created with NDD are a great option for creating elaborated details and sleek designs. NDD is Neolith’s innovative digital decoration technology that prints intricate designs onto the Neolith product, allowing for previously unseen design possibilities and new finishes. The design options are endless, ranging from the industrial shine of the Iron collection to the detailed woodgrain design of Timber, and are virtually indistinguishable from their natural counterparts. Also used for the Classtone collection, NDD gives Neolith’s signature slabs the aesthetic quality and realistic look of marble with the added strength and dependability of a sintered compact surface. A large selection of the NEOLITH product range in 12 and 6mm thicknesses are available through their UK South of England distributor QF Distribution Ltd. www.qfdistribution.co.uk www.neolith.com

Leading bathroom solutions provider, Ideal Standard, has launched its revolutionary AquaBlade toilet system, with superior flushing performance, even at low water volumes. Its innovative ‘Microslot’ technology creates a cascading wall of water from the top of the toilet bowl, with two powerful plumes to energise the flush, with optimum water flow keeping the bowl immaculately clean.

It is surprisingly quiet because all the flows are streamlined with the bowl surfaces, reducing turbulence. Its beautifully smooth design greatly reduces splashing, with fewer bacteria particles released into the air upon flushing – and with no overhanging rim, all surfaces are exposed, making it easier to clean.

Keith Boad, Ideal Standard’s Managing Director, said: “AquaBlade not only offers best in class flushing performance, but outstanding aesthetics – it embodies everything we stand for.” Ideal Standard’s exclusive and patented AquaBlade technology is available across close-coupled, wall-hung and back-to-wall WCs. www.ideal-standard.co.uk

Integrating cutting-edge technology with modern industrial design

Studio Octopi, the architect firm leading the C-Space development, has praised Electric String’s creativity.

Blending stunning aesthetics with the latest technology is one of the biggest challenges facing interior designers today.

“Throughout the process Electric String was creative in suggesting kit that was both appropriate to the project’s aesthetic and innovative. Production of information and attendance on site were all exemplary. We would have no hesitation in putting them forward for future projects with the practice.”

When global marketing agency MullenLowe Group moved into its new headquarters at the C-Space building - a converted carpet factory in the heart of East London’s Tech City - it required an audio visual solution that not only delivered cutting-edge technology but integrated with the office’s modern industrial design. Electric String, the Yorkshire and Londonbased integrator of bespoke audio visual systems, provided a fully integrated solution that not only exceeded the needs and expectations of MullenLowe Group – which counts Unilever and the Post Office as its clients - but resulted in a top industry award for the project. Teaming up with technical partner Crestron, Electric String provided a system

that would improve audio and video quality, streamline the process of editing interactive content and enhance working practices, all within a very challenging time frame. It includes a fully-scalable audio distribution system (Crestron SWAMPI24X) that delivers high-output audiophile sound quality to every room with reduced cabling, low power consumption, advanced DSP and integrator-friendly setup, and a 32x32 Crestron DigitalMedia Switcher, offering ultra-fast digital video and audio switching, and lossless HD multiroom signal distribution, for all types of AV sources. Other features included SAROS pendants for speakers with the central control achieved with a PRO3 processor, full control of lighting and blinds within the boardroom from a mini iPad located on a desk mounted launch port charging cradle and Cameo keypads in meeting spaces.

Chris Romer-Lee, director & co-founder of Studio Octopi, said: “Studio Octopi worked with client Mullen Lowe Group on a sixmonth programme to deliver a 46,000sqft CAT B fit-out on time and budget. The AV installation was extensive and complicated because of the various agencies all coming together in one building.”

Electric String was presented with the Best Corporate Installation Award in the annual Crestron Integration Awards, a celebration of amazing projects featuring Crestron technology at the 13th annual Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) show in Amsterdam in February 2016. www.electric-string.com info@electric-string.com 0148 232 0338

A Disappearing Act From the very outset, Eclisse has believed in a systematic commitment to ongoing product improvement and innovation and the Syntesis Collection速 is a testament to that ethos. The Eclisse Syntesis range of frameless hinged doors, frameless pocket doors, frameless riser doors and an ingenious skirting board frame that leaves the skirting flush with the walls creates the perfect minimalist contemporary interior. The Syntesis hinged doors are hollow core construction, so light yet strong, with double thickness stiles and rails for greater rigidity. A tensioner rod on the hinged doors ensures the door fits down to the millimetre and the 3 concealed hinges per door are adjustable through 3 axes for a perfect fit. The frames are made from high strength extruded aluminium 2kg/m and are suitable for use with solid or stud walls, and are phosphate treated to avoid any oxidisation and are primed and ready to paint. A crucial component in the Eclisse system are the extruded aluminium edges to the frame, which are extremely rigid and can be plastered into. So the complete wall and, in the case of the pocket, the return also is created in plaster, giving an even and consistent surface. The Syntesis pocket door range has a running gear that has been independently tested to more than 100,000 open and close cycles (over 25 years of normal use) and the track system is also fully extractable without ever having to break into the wall.

Fall in love with your windowS... “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful" - William Morris -1834 A poignant quote by the celebrated textile designer of the Victorian age, a time of prolific house building resulting in the many millions of properties that still very much makes up a large part of Greater London’s charm and character. We appreciate the quality of craftsmanship of these houses, the high ceilings, ornate plasterwork, detailed staircases and unusual features, such as stained glass.

Archetech - Page 78

An integral and essential element to these properties are their large Box Sash windows, allowing wonderful light & colours into the home, the vertical operation allows shutters & blinds to operate unimpeded and when open a little at both top and bottom they provide unrivalled convection ventilation.

As in all things that are 100+ years old many of these windows have been severely neglected over time resulting in a hatred of the poor fit, draughts, cold and decay associated with them. To add insult to injury the vast majority of these houses are now situated in designated Conservation Areas where there are strict rules on the materials and design of replacements, usually requiring dimensional copies in timber to preserve the character and appearance of the original. A desire for modern living comforts coupled with a moral obligation to conserve energy combine with the above to create a particularly difficult set of issues to overcome. Fortunately help is nearby, Established in 1992 Refurb-a Sash has a wealth of experience and is able to provide a range of solutions to these all too common problems. Based in Isleworth, TW7 they are perfectly located to service West

London and the surrounding area. The services range from comprehensive overhauls & concealed draught proofing of existing windows, part renewals including discreet integrated double glazing, through to full replacement or reinstatement of an entire window. All products are bespoke and handmade in house by their own craftsmen. The company will be delighted to show you around their workshops and showroom without obligation. Glazing options include safety, security, heat retention and acoustic, which all dramatically improve performance whilst retaining the authenticity and appearance of the original windows. Their ‘concept to completion’ principle has resulted in a loyal customer base who appreciate the personal service and fastidious attention to detail to which even William Morris would surely approve.

Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), New York Main contractor: Besix Group NV, Brussels Structural engineer: Werner Sobek, Stuttgart Developer: Signature Hotels Management Company SPC, Bahrain Fabricator: Jungbluth Alu Partners, Herstal (BE) Reynaers systems: bespoke solution based on CW 86-EF and CW 50-SC, CP 96, CS 77-F6

Waleed Alabbas, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain

Bespoke solution from Reynaers for iconic waterfront hotel When architect practice Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) was tasked with designing an iconic waterfront hotel for the prestigious Four Seasons, it turned to Reynaers to make its visionary glass façade a reality. Situated on a 12-acre private island in the capital city of Manama, Bahrain, the hotel was an ambitious project: a 68-storey ‘city gateway’. A strong composition of glass, concrete piers and suspended volumes, the newly-completed building combines an urban resort aesthetic with intimate spaces. It’s said to be a statement of the city’s potential – a kick-starter for regional development and an inspiration for what can be achieved. Working with SOM and contractor Jungbluth Alu Partners, Reynaers stepped in to bring a quality focus to a bespoke solution. Based on its CW 86-EF, CW 50-SC, CP 96 and CS 77-FP systems across full-height windows, doors and curtain walling, Reynaers shaped a custom glass and aluminium façade that added to the hotel’s striking appearance, while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.

“It’s not very often that you design the masterplan and then get to build on it. And there aren’t many standalone hotel projects either,” said project architect Thomas Behr. “We are building a relationship with the city and

powdercoated aluminium-ceilinged portico, which continues into the lobby.

SOM designed its first project in Bahrain, the United Gulf Bank, nearly 30 years ago. At the Four Seasons Hotel, the stakes were particularly high – to design an iconic waterfront hotel on a prominent 432,000m2 plot, known as Bahrain Bay, that didn’t yet exist.

The impact of the 200m tall tower is softened by a series of pavilions for the spa and conference facilities on either side, as well as a Mediterranean-style garden planted with olive trees and wild flowers.

Commissioned by Signature Hotels Management Company SPC, the project began in 2004 with a masterplan for reclaimed land arranged from the mainland in concentric circles – with the Four Seasons Hotel at the heart of the plan. It’s situated on its own private 12-acre island accessible by bridge or boat. Behr explained: “The building’s design is informed by the need to make it striking on an urban scale, yet intimate for guests so it feels like a resort. “It is a very strong design when you look at it in the Bahrain skyline because it is so simple. The concrete clad piers and walls are very dominant. It makes a statement, it’s a kind of gateway to the city,” said Behr. With a skypod restaurant suspended at the top of the building, the guest bedrooms in the middle and the lobby at the bottom, the tower’s base feels the most resort-like thanks to clever landscaping. Interesting textures and patterning on the concrete walls, as well as the limestone-clad podium, create an earthy, natural finish. The entrance appears more futuristic through the addition of an external bronze

Each bedroom has full-height windows overlooking the bays, while aluminium panels throughout the building visually connect the disparate levels. In all, as Behr explained, The Four Seasons Hotel was a very important project to get built: “With all the difficulties Bahrain went through as a result of the global economic crisis, many projects got cancelled. This is the first major project since, and has kickstarted a new wave of development.” Lead engineer Roland Jungbluth, from façade contractor Jungbluth Alu Partners (JAP), selected Reynaers’ aluminium systems because “the company has a long-standing good relationship with Reynaers and the service is very proactive”. JAP is a specialist façade company that provides technical solutions for the external building envelope in the fields of design, engineering, work management and construction. It is known for its cost-effective and flexible methods, including erecting onsite factories for each project. The company has completed projects all over the world including the 300m Aspire Tower in Doha, the Qatar National Convention Centre and Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, all in partnership with Reynaers. www.reynaers.co.uk

SOM’s 273-bedroom hotel opens up a new world of luxury in Manama and is already being heralded as one of the most iconic buildings to punctuate its changing skyline. By using Reynaers’ quality systems, the Four Seasons Hotel will not only inspire a new age of development in Bahrain, but will also stand the test of time.

we hope this project is part of the legacy, and that it leads to other projects like it.”

In all forms of new and refurbished building construction, Specifiers today are seeking to reduce window frame sight lines to increase light transmittance. Aluprof, one of Europe's leading systems companies, have designed a system with the slimmest of sight lines, the new 'MB Slimline' system. With a fixed light and opening light aluminium face width of just 32.5mm Aluprof’s new ‘MB Slimline’ window offers both good looks and high thermal performance - something steel window systems cannot offer. U values of below 1.00 are achievable, as the new system will accept both double and triple glazing options coupled with aluminium profiles which use wide polyamide thermal break. With a wide range of profiles available, the ‘MB Slimline’ system can offer high inertia ratings and slim, deep profiles, offering the specifier the ability to use the system in any large, or small, window spaces. Ideally suited to both new and replacement projects, in both residential and commercial environments, where slim lines are crucial to the aesthetic appearance of the building, the ‘MB Slimline’ system offers a complete solution. ‘MB Slimline’ is further proof of Aluprof’s innovative approach to fenestration solutions, establishing itself as one of Europe's leading systems companies. The new system joins a wide portfolio of aluminium systems which includes curtain wall systems, doors windows and high performance aluminium fire rated systems. Aluprof UK head office and extensive distribution centre is located in Altrincham, Cheshire. Aluprof systems increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets Aluprof exacting standards. Further information is available on our company’s website at www.aluprof.eu and specialist advice is available directly from Aluprof on 0161 941 4005.

With a Boon Edam Heater it’s a Breeze!

During periods of cold and windy weather, why allow the temperature in your lobby to drop? On occasions when the weather is windy, cold air can become trapped within the compartments of the revolving door and subsequently forced into an internal area, normally the reception area. By combining a Boon Edam heater with a revolving door system this cold air is negated and prevented from entering the building.

When installed, the heater creates a warm barrier around the inner opening of the doorway which counteracts any cold air infiltrating through the door. With the option to add a Boon Edam heater either from new or as a retrofit, we can ensure that your lobby area is kept at a comfortable climate at all times whilst not impacting on the aesthetics of your entry point. At Boon Edam, we are proud to offer a range of air curtains which can be made bespoke for all commercial, corporate or industrial requirements.

GroundTherm have worked in the renewable energy industry since 1999, designing and installing GSHP, ASHP, Under Floor Heating, Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) and Solar Thermal systems.

Is your renewable energy installation in pole position?

GroundTherm specialise in providing comprehensive solutions for architects - taking care of renewable energy installations from start to finish, managing the process completely and liaising closely in partnership with all parties to achieve optimal results. Here GroundTherm’s Andrew Louth explains that he and architects have more in common than you may think - as the key to effective application is design.

Design is key When designing a building, efficiency, visual appeal and liveability are all front of mind. When focusing on energy efficiency, it’s useful to think of a property as a Formula One car – requiring a perfect blend of design and functionality. A performance car needs meticulous attention to detail for each element to work well to produce overall success - and the same applies for renewable heating. Although renewable energy systems and innovative design don’t appear to go hand-in-hand on the outset, they are in fact intrinsically linked, with the success of the installation depending on both being properly executed. Their symbiotic relationship allows architects to achieve green objectives whilst maintaining aesthetic appeal and keeping to project deadlines. Together the two work cohesively, just as performance cars need streamlined design with a powerful engine to excel.

The devil’s in the detail For a renewable heating system incorporating ground or air source to work optimally, the design of the installation needs to be meticulously planned and executed in line with the overall goals desired. The sizing of the heat pump, buffer tank and hot water cylinder are the key to the capacity of the system - especially the duty cycling of the heat pump, as insufficient capacity will affect the absorber and ground temperatures resulting in higher electricity bills. Newly-built, highly-efficient buildings are based on w/m2 and kw/h running time – meaning the sizing of the absorber is dependent on the thermal conductivity.

Ground source heat is derived from the earlier concept of refrigeration – effectively the same process in reverse. With this in mind it’s inevitable that the fabric of the building and heat losses also become important considerations when calculating of the volumetric capacity of the absorber, ensuring it is sized to the peak loading of heating and hot water demand. This is dependent on the external temperatures and ground temperature – so it’s also necessary to confirm the geology of the ground with a British Geological Survey carried out by a trained Geologist.

Get it right – first time We always accurately size and design the system using heat loss calculations, thermal bridging, and thermo-geology for the absorber sizing to perfectly suit the client’s needs as part of our process. Working closely with architects, developers, project managers and clients to get best of the system has many benefits for all involved – and often brings down the cost of materials though forward planning - just like a Formula One team mechanic works with the engineers, designers and driver to achieve optimum results. Some of our work involves repairing and re-designing installed systems - normally though insurance companies or direct clients who have high electricity bills – intervention is often needed due to poor design and installation. Remedial work can be disruptive and costly – which is why getting it right is so very important.

AEROPAC from SIEGENIA - removing the barriers to residential ventilation

Archetech - Page 98

As thermal insulation and air-tightness improve thanks to housing projects which focus on driving up energy efficiency, the need for effective ventilation solutions has never been greater. This is especially the case when you consider how many of Britain’s homes are located in noisy urban areas where windows often remain closed in a bid to cut down noise pollution. With current legislation, controlled ventilation ordinarily means extract fans in bathrooms and kitchens and trickle vents on windows. However this is insufficient given the high standard of air tightness in modern homes. Centralised ventilation systems are technically excellent, but deploying these on a wide scale would prove much more of a challenge. Smart thinking holds the key SIEGENIA’s AEROPAC wall-mounted ventilator offers a convenient, costeffective alternative. The easy-to-fit, stand-alone ventilation units can be

installed in as little as 45 minutes with just an 80mm hole through the wall and an electrical connection. This simple installation process makes the unit suitable both for new build and retrofit markets. The AEROPAC offers multiple benefits for end users: most notably, improving air quality on a 24-hour constant timer thus eliminates the security risk of leaving windows open and maintains a quiet environment. It does this by incorporating a clever sound insulation barrier to offer an ‘acoustic vent’, making this an attractive proposition for properties set in noisy environments, such as near flight paths or train lines. Moreover, its sound absorption and low inherent noise (LPA = 24 dB (A)) mean it is suitable for use in bedrooms and can be kept on overnight without disturbing the user’s sleep. The air throughput of the AEROPAC can be conveniently set at different levels via the LCD display on the front. There is no compromise on energy efficiency

either, with the units using just 5W at 60 m3/h. Allergy sufferers also benefit as the AEROPAC’s filter can be upgraded to a 99% pollen-free filter for greater comfort during high pollen months. Finally, there are no major maintenance headaches further down the line as these stand-alone units require no ducting nor any of the costly cleaning associated with this. The only maintenance required is a change of filter when the unit’s LCD display indicates to do so. The front panel of the ventilator can be opened by hand and the use of filter cassettes means that the filter can be changed quickly and conveniently without any tools. The great thing for UK specifiers is that, whilst these ventilation units may be relatively new to the UK, they have already proved themselves in more than 100,000 installations across Europe. That means risk-free specification. To find out more visit www.siegenia.com.

The Herman Miller Collection For many, the company Herman Miller is synonymous with the office – in particular the ground-breaking Aeron chair which changed the face of office seating when it was launched in 1994, and continues to roll off the production line at a rate of one every 17 seconds. While Aeron was unique in many ways, the approach to its design was far from revolutionary. The ground work began with the first Director of Design for Herman Miller, George Nelson who held the position from 1946 to 1972. During his tenure, George Nelson defined a set of principles that have guided the company ever since: what we make is important; design is an integral part of the business; the product must be honest; we decide what we make; there is a market for good design.

Archetech - Page 110

Putting this philosophy into action, Nelson launched the Herman Miller

Collection in 1948 which he described as ‘a permanent collection designed to meet fully the requirements for modern living.’ The Herman Miller Collection has been through various iterations since its inception, but a key element is the continual showcase of designers who share the company’s values and attitudes. With that in mind the current Collection presents updated archival pieces alongside new designs from today’s top talent – bridging Herman Miller’s past, present and future. You’ll find designs from the 1940s onwards juxtaposed with pieces from the present day – seen together in every environment, these designs, whether they are by Isamu Noguchi, Ward Bennett or BassamFellows, all speak the same language, and all reflect those design principles set out by George Nelson.

Each piece in the Herman Miller Collection requires a delicate balance between craft and industrial process. The Collection uses the latest technology and newest materials available, but it remains grounded in the quality and value produced by the thoughtfulness, and individual human touches of the workers who assemble many of its pieces by hand. Alongside this are the materials used for each product. State-of-the-art textiles build on decades of learning and investigation, with carefully chosen materials that use new processes or embrace the ties to our design heritage. Whether it is the designer, production or materials, each offering serves the product and the user while also innovatively exemplifying the Collection’s DNA: practical beauty. www.hermanmiller.co.uk/collection

At Herman Miller, we believe there is a market for good design. It is what has compelled us to create inventive, design-driven solutions to life’s everyday problems for over a century, and it continues to drive us in creating products that are as purposeful as they are beautiful.

Fusiontables launch the new VINTAGE Collection. "Be Out of Time" The New Vintage collection is marked by a unique and easily recognisable style. A perfect mix between reclaimed wood timbers and a post-industrial metal frame. Sober and original, yet reverent and groundbreaking, the Vintage dining pool table provides class to any space through its perfect blend of chic and tradition. Old oak wooden floors have been sourced in rural Spain and recycled into beautiful vintage panels which are then married with old powder blue Iwan Simonis cloth. The result is stunning, inviting you to breathe the air of an old Brooklyn workplace or a typical 80's English pub without leaving your dining room.

Well known for their creativity, flexibility and know-how, Belgium-based Saluc is a world leader in the production and marketing of high quality billiard balls and associated products since 1923. 5 years ago Saluc decided that it was time for a new pool table concept, and working with the unusual mantra ‘something my wife will accept in the living room’, the Fusiontable was born. The Fusiontable is naturally based on the shape and dimensions of a traditional American pool table but offers it as a combination of a pool table and a very modern dining table. The sleek and light looking design of the Fusiontable creates a zen, elegant and lounge atmosphere through the combination of fun and socialisation, something that has never been said about a pool table before.

The ground-breaking tables also tackle the question of differentiated heights between pool tables and dining tables thanks to a patent pending Easy Lift System which enables users to raise the table within five seconds. And finally, you won’t need to sacrifice one room to house the table either. It won’t be tucked away in an unused corner or down in the dark basement, but it will become the centrepiece of your living room, an imperative feature in your family and your life. The bigger, the better.

At The London Tile and Mosaic Company, large format tiles have become the norm over the last decade. For all of us here, requests for a 90x90cm or 1mx1m size is nothing out of the ordinary. With the progression to 3mx1.5m sizes, what is out of the ordinary is the necessity to ascertain what a building's corridors are like, what width and height a stairwell or lift might be or whether there is a roof crane available before we can continue with a client's enquiry.

pictured: Folios Nero/Arazzo Nero

Once logistical hurdles are overcome, large surface areas are quickly covered by these marvellous feats of innovation, from our largest 3x1.5m size, to the more manageable 1.5x1.5m or 1.2x1.2m for those without a roof crane. With creativity utilising technological advancement in this way, we believe it is now safe to say that the best things do not necessarily come in small packages. londontileandmosaic.com Tel. 0207 403 3190

Lighting Your Imagination Cornice wall lighting The growing trend for alternative room illumination is the popular use of uplighting cornice troughs. Fitted with LED bars in either a low or high lumen option (or dimmer switch), this is now an easy way to add that special mood lighting effect, whether in a cinema room or main living area. But illuminating the ceiling is only one way of using these products. Many profiles can be reversed to use as a downlighter or combined with a sister profile to create a lighting ‘band’ along a wall length. Other uses are as architrave to light up a door frame. Davuka now market the largest UK range of lighting profiles of varying sizes and styles including the prestigious Red-Dot award design ref C364. They also have a huge range of mouldings for both internal and external use from flexible coving to columns and entrance canopies.

Portsoy Boatshed / Brown + Brown Architects The scheme is a community boatbuilding centre for a charity (Scottish Traditional Boat Festival), located in Portsoy on the North coast of Aberdeenshire. The building replaces 2 derelict stores, and was partially funded by Aberdeenshire Council, Historic Scotland, and the Aberdeen European Fisheries Fund. Architects - Brown + Brown Architects www.brownandbrownarchitects.com Photographs - Nigel Rigden www.nigrig.com

The job essentially comprises a modern timber building, which has been slipped inside a reconstructed stone skin. Due to the setting of an historic harbour, no new openings were permitted in the stone walls, resulting in most of the natural light coming via a ridge rooflight, which runs the length of the building.

Archetech - Page 134

Spaces are provided in the building for the construction of traditional boats, and the teaching of these skills to local school children. The volunteers from the charity played a large part of the project, and partially constructed the building themselves.

modern “Watervilla the Omval” that they designed a little further downstream on the river Amstel. They also wanted to build a modern watervilla in which the relationship between the living area and water would be maximized. The result is a modern watervilla which is characterized on the waterside by a film frame-like glass façade. The pontoon principle has the benefit that you can use it in shallow water, compared to the hollow concrete box it has less stability and should be very light.

Both floating constructions are connected with a flexible connection to the quay, so the construction can rise with the water when the tide changes. When needed the floating system can be moved elsewhere at short notice without leaving any scar to the environment. Instead a new house can be placed in to the old situation which makes it the most sustainable and durable way to build. The floating houses shown by +31architects are based on the hollow concrete box.

Thatched Roof – Fire Protection Thatching Advisory Services (TAS) - Overview Statistically homes with thatched roofs are no more likely to catch fire than those with conventional roofs if the owner is made aware of and understands the risk of thatch fire. However, if a thatched roof does ignite and is allowed to develop it’s almost impossible to control and the results can be devastating. Every thatched fire will vary due to factors such as weather conditions, location of property, thickness of the thatch etc. For over 40 years TAS has unrivalled expertise in the protection of thatched buildings and offer advice on the preventative and protective options available. We are often the first port of call for architects, home-owners, local authority building control departments and thatchers.

The key objective of any fire barrier is to buy more time. A fire barrier will dramatically increase the chance of saving the majority of the building.

Fire Retardant Sprays

A survey into the cause of thatch fires revealed ejected embers and sparks as the main cause and all included the use of wood burning or multi-fuel stoves. Investigations showed that fires were reported within 30 minutes of a fire being lit or being re- fuelled.

Fire retardant sprays should be applied by trained personnel using high-pressure specialist equipment to treat not only the thatch surface but also the thatch stems to ensure a degree of protection for a number of years.

Several issues can increase the risk of the effects from ejected embers or sparks, these include: •

Spark arrestors – If not cleaned at least once a year they can clog up and will catch fire in their own right, which in turn could cause a thatch fire. Chimney height – The risk of a thatch fire is further increased when the chimney height has been reduced following many years of recoating works, this is more common with thatching materials such as long straw.

The application should be carried out at a certain pressure using a specific tip spraying upwards into the thatch coat work at the angle of the roof ensuring penetration of between 50mm and 75mm. This will ensure the fire retardant is applied to both the surface and thatch stems. Thatch fire retardants should be a water-based solution of fire retardant and intumescent chemicals specifically formulated for the protection of thatch roofing. They should not contain any borates or borate-based additives. They must be environmentally friendly with no detrimental effect to plants or animals and of course have no adverse reaction to the thatch. TAS Thatchsayf Fire Retardant Spray can be applied as a standalone product or in addition to having a physical fire barrier system installed and should be reapplied every five years.

Page 141 - Archetech

Over the years we have forged close working relationships with many of the leading insurance companies, test houses and product manufacturers whilst further developing our range of fire barriers.

Fire - Causes

Archetech - Page 142

A treated roof will offer protection from a number of fire risks, including sparks, ejected embers, bonfires, Chinese lanterns, fireworks and barbecues. On exposure to these risks, Thatchsayf will intumesce and form a carbonised char, which binds the thatch stems together, cutting off the supply of oxygen to the fire, delaying the spread of flame and lowering the radiated heat output.

Chimneys Chimneys are often an area of concern and the integrity of a chimney stack should be checked if homeowners are

planning to use a wood burning or multifuel stove or even an open fire. In the UK, if a new appliance is installed it has to comply with current building regulations as detailed in Approval Document J. A suitable liner is a must for any operational chimney in a thatched property, especially when a wood burning or multi-fuel stove is being used. We always recommend that homeowners seek advice from the Solid Fuel Association or HETAS. Many chimneys may not be correctly lined. For example, if a flexi-liner is

installed incorrectly and is in contact with the side of the chimney it could result in a ‘hot spot’ which could accelerate the process of heat transfer. Bricks may also be missing. It is impossible to fully check the condition of the chimney at the point that it passes through the thatch, useless the thatch is removed or a CCTV survey is carried out.

Heat Transfer Wood burners and multi-fuel stoves can generate very high flue gas temperatures; this in turn can be transferred through

Chimney Heat Monitors

Heat transfer is generally caused by faulty chimneys, poorly or incorrectly fitted liners and the addition of high flue gas temperatures being generated by these efficient stoves. The thatch is at a much greater risk of the effects of heat transfer if the chimney is not lined.

TAS-33 Thatch Alert Chimney Monitor Systems can be installed to monitor the temperature of the chimney brickwork (heat transfer) at the point where it meets the thatch. In the event of high temperatures being recorded, the system will trigger an audible alarm allowing the homeowner to take action.

Heat transfer is further increased at the point where the thatch meets the chimney. This is due to the insulating properties of the thatching material. The heat transfer process can cause thatch to smoulder and ignite if temperatures in excess of 200oC are reached.

Fire Barriers Physical fire barriers for thatched roofs are designed to create a separation between the thatch and the rest of the building. The principle being, in the event of a fire the thatch is seen as sacrificial.

In terms of fire resistance either a fireboard or firewall membrane can be used to achieve the required fire resistance (integrity) and a noncombustible Thatchbatt速 for further fire protection as well as acoustic and insulation values. Both TAS100 fireboards and TAS firewall membranes are designed to resist spread of flame and penetration as set out in BS476: Part 3: 2004 & CEN/TS 1187: 2012, test 4. Both products are water resistant and will reduce the potential water damage that can be generated as part of the firefighting process. The TAS100 fireboards are normally used for new builds, extensions or

Page 143 - Archetech

the brickwork of the chimney to the thatch, this is known as heat transfer.

totally refurbished buildings where the roof timbers are straight enough to take a rigid board. When used with our Thatchbatt® as part of a system, the fireboard will meet the criteria of the ‘Dorset Model’. The TAS firewall membranes are normally used on existing roofs that are not straight enough to accept the rigid fireboard system.

Archetech - Page 144

Our high density non-combustible Thatchbatts® are designed to be friction fitted between the roof timbers, which will give greater protection by reducing the thermal transfer around the roof timbers reducing the risk of secondary fires starting and potential roof collapse.

Modern living under thatch has dramatically changed with the introduction of modern central heating, double glazing, power showers and many more people wanting fully vaulted ceilings. Additionally the requirements and associated recommendations from Building Control and insurance companies see the requirement for fire barriers and increased levels of insulation to be installed within the roof structure. It is widely accepted in the construction industry that in addition to sufficient levels of insulation, vapour control layers are required to control vapour and reduce the risk of condensation. There are many vapour control products available,

however, it is important to install the correct product that best suits each individual building.

Summary Prevention is the best solution. In the event of a fire, a physical fire barrier or system will buy crucial time, dramatically help reduce the amount of damage and also create a safer working environment for Fire & Rescue Services. Tesco’s Timber-Clad Envelope Sets An Example For Sustainable Supermarkets Timber as a building material is one of the most efficient, safest and cheapest forms of carbon capture and storage available to architects and engineers as a building material, making it an ideal solution for the increasingly eco-conscious retail industry. Bedford based Multi-Disciplinary Architects, Engineers and Development Consultants Woods Hardwick were tasked with turning Tesco’s outlet in Corby, Northamptonshire, into an Eco Store. This brief brought with it its own challenges, as the

structure was to be built on a brownfield site. The land had been contaminated through its association with the Corby Steel Works, which required the construction team to work closely with the Environment Agency. From the ground up, all environmental criteria were addressed at the site to incorporate the most effective treatments. The envelope, building fabric, structural components and composition had a crucial role to play.

ROOF MAKER - AT THE LEADING EDGE OF BRITISH DESIGN Roof Maker’s range of super-slim contemporary and energy efficient roof windows and bi-fold doors open up the potential for natural daylighting and creating a brighter, more spacious and welcoming living space. With our newly launched showroom in Leicestershire, architects, designers and homeowners can see for themselves our latest design features, high performance glazing and market leading innovations.

Inspirational designs Roof Maker’s triple glazed fixed and opening roof windows can be combined to create a striking glazed feature for extensions and attic conversions or to simply lighten darker areas such as hallways or stairwells.

Archetech - Page 148

Ideal for properties with a roof garden or terrace, toughened walk-on rooflights are a creative way to let in natural light or to transform a basement into a more comfortable living space. With their spectacular raised pyramid shape, roof lanterns can make a bold statement as they are structurally designed to bring natural light flooding into the home in a dramatic and visually appealing way.

Stunningly contemporary bifold doors Homeowners and designers can now create a completely streamlined look with our super-slim triple glazed aluminium folding sliding door systems, which complement our skylights and roof windows. For a more minimalistic look, frameless glass units are also available, which are flush-glazed without any external handles creating a stunning ‘wall of glass’ appearance.

Market leading energy performance All Roof Maker’s glazed products come with high performance triple glazing as standard. With U Values as low as 0.5W/ m2k, they are up to 60% more energy efficient than the very best ‘A rated’ double-glazing, which helps keep rooms warmer in the winter whilst remaining cool in the summer. Furthermore, with new Heat Mirror© Insulated Glass Units, which weigh up to 33% less than comparably sized triple glazed units, even larger glazed areas can be created without compromising energy efficiency.

Amazing glazing options! At Roof Maker we offer a whole host of glazing features from standard clear glass to opaque and tinted glass. We are the first UK company to introduce ‘Sun-Tint’, revolutionary new smart glass, which automatically self-tints to reduce the glare and heat when the sun is too bright and then reverts to transparent glass when the sun goes in. To help keep roof windows and bifold doors clean all year round, we even offer ‘easy clean’ glass as standard across the range.

One-stop-shop service A ‘one-stop-shop’ for both manufacturing and installation, all our products are manufactured to exceed current building standards and come with a 20-year unit seal warranty. Roof Maker will be on stand B580 in the Grand Designs Build Hall at ExCeL London April 30th - May 8th. Our showroom is open weekdays 8am 6pm, Saturdays 9am - 5pm at at: 1 Pinfold Road, Thurmaston, Leicester LE4 8AS. Tel: 0116 269 6297. Email: sales@roof-maker.co.uk Web: www.roof-maker.co.uk

One of the biggest tasks faced in ensuring good health and safety practice is the communication of information. It is vital that everyone concerned understands risks and how they should be dealt with. For this reason, the proper signage in a building, is essential, as it is one of the main points of reference and contact for staff, customers or inhabitants. For instance signs should be located anywhere in which a potential hazard might be found, and the aim is to clearly indicate the danger so that it may be avoided and /or appropriate action taken. We produce good quality signage at reasonable prices (mainly due to our in-house capabilities and skill to manufacture on our own substrates here in the UK). SignsforSafety adhere firmly to legislative requirements, including BS ISO 3864 and BS EN ISO 7010, which are the benchmarks of our industry.

Unlike most other signage suppliers, SignsforSafety carry extensive stock to meet nationwide delivery requirements, as well as having a department dedicated to bespoke signage and projects. Our material range includes Photoluminescent Vinyl and Rigid, White Vinyl/Rigid, Foamex, Aluminium, Perspex, Vynalast, Stainless Steel/Brass and many more on request. Our Photoluminescent material TelglowTM, properly energized, will provide illumination for up to 18 hours and creates a new vision of direction and spatial awareness to improve safety way guidance systems in darkness and smoky conditions. The material is self-charging from ambient light, requires no installation wiring, reducing the need for emergency lighting and has little or no maintenance.

Our main range for statutory health & safety signage, alongside our information, community and commissioned signage/ posters cover various categories, subsequently each sector is catered for. These signs can convey a variety of meanings, because in many cases, the simple warning of danger is not adequate. The very best health and safety systems use a complete set of signs that not only help to prevent dangerous situations, but instruct people what to do in the event of an emergency. Having the proper signage in your place of work, building or residence can significantly reduce accidents, and with most countries adhering to international standards, signage is a legal requirement. Compliance is therefore both beneficial and essential.

Our SignsforSafety brochure is an invaluable guide, enabling our clients to make informed choices concerning their signage. The book gives clear guidance to the responsible person(s) for the building/organisation. The book is available f.o.c from our website. Web: www.signsforsafety.co.uk

Nebula “HPWM” is an innovative, best value, fire protection solution designed to allow open plan layouts to comply with current UK building regulations (BS 8458:2015). Building and housing regulations have traditionally encouraged the creation of fire resistant compartments in homes as to limit the spread of fire, an approach that consumers find increasingly frustrating as they seek open, light spaces to live in. Today however, LACoRS guide, approved Document B, British Standard_8458 and the Scottish Building Regulations all recognise the need for flexibility of layout and all allow open-plan designs as long as some additional features, including fire suppression, are provided. For architects and developers, Nebula “HPWM” allows the modern, open-plan layouts that clients increasingly expect to comply with Building Regulations. For landlords, Nebula “HPWM” can create a safe escape route in an existing open plan house or flat with no impact on rentable space.

Long Rake Spar Increases Decorative Aggregate Range for 2016

Pools for special purposes Rescue and water training hall at Bremerhaven

Long Rake Spar, a leading supplier of decorative aggregates into multiple sectors, have just expanded their product range to include 4 new products for 2016. Following on from the popularity of their Ice Blue decorative chippings, they have launched both Ice Blue Pebbles 20-50mm and Ice Blue Cobbles 4080mm. These light grey-blue materials have natural light reflecting properties, perfect to brighten up dark/shady areas in general landscaping projects. The introduction of an additional Slate Mulch in a Black Charcoal colour, which is available in a 40 and 20mm size, will undoubtedly reach similar sales potential as the existing blue, plum and green.

Usually, swimming baths are used for sport, recreation and relaxation. At Bremerhaven, however, a building with two indoor swimming pools for very specific purposes was realized: they serve for the special training of the flying personnel of the German Navy. This very unusual utilization also influenced the choice of the materials used, which have to be particularly robust, as “heavy equipment“ such as rescue apparatuses, oxygen cylinders etc. is being handled during the training. Thanks to the comprehensive concept of the architects and the tile solutions of the well-known architectural ceramics brand Agrob Buchtal, which can be individually combined, the result is convincing not only by highest functionality but also by attractive design.

The key to creating durable decking and cladding structures in timber

Thermowood D decking and cladding from Howarth Timber

Durable, fit for purpose timber decking and cladding starts with the Timber Decking and Cladding Association. In addition to website resources dedicated to decking and cladding, the association also offers a free materials sourcing service which furnishes you with a list of companies ready and able to meet your specific requirements. Janet Sycamore, director of operations explains ‘Sourcing suitable products and obtaining quotations can be time consuming but we help lighten that load. One of our enquirers even asked us to source structural grade hardwood to be used in the recreation of a 1920’s wooden roller coaster. One of our members came up trumps with some Opepe timber’. TDCA members consist of material manufactures including timber, fixings, timber protection, coatings and other accessories as well as the best that industry can offer by way of professional installers. Members are DeckMark or CladMark accredited which means they meet the stringent requirements of these two TDCA quality schemes. For more information visit www.tda.org.uk or call 01977 558147.
