A'tolan House Create + Think Design Studio A’tolan is the word meaning, “a place with many rocks”, from the indigenous language of the natives on the east coast of Taiwan. It may also be interpreted as “piling of rocks”, “building wall with rocks”, or “a house made out of rocks.” The site is located on the eastern seaboard of Taiwan, adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. The foundation is of a narrow rectangular shape of approximately 90 meters in length and 30 meters in width, sitting on the north-south axis. Following the coastline, at approximately 60 meters down the axis from the north, the structure turns 130 degrees east. The downward slope from west to east is transformed and represented in three levels. The essence of this project is the use of the traditional native architectural technique of A’tolan. The rocks excavated from the site are then used to build the east-west walls spanning over three levels like rice patty terraces. Top level 28 meters: driveway entrance/front yard Middle level 23 meters: main structure

With a humble posture in front of the majestic sea, the structure extends with a relative low profile along the contour of the coastline, following its bend as if opening itself to the sea at an angle of 130. The steel frame is cladded with the native rocks and the living roof with various herbs serves as walkway on a plateau. Utilizing the natural background to hide the handmade elements, the wide stone stairway descends from the plateau to the open-air foyer of the building.
Page 7 - Archetech
Surrounded by the serene beauty of mother nature, we have chosen a least invasive design that satisfies the basic shelter and food preparation needs. Hence, the interior consists only of cooking areas and sleeping quarters. The spaces are defined by accordion glass doors, allowing light and air to flow freely throughout. One can be awed simultaneously by the immensity of the ocean or the stoicism of the rock wall.
Archetech - Page 8
A few areas symbiotically enhance the egalitarian function of the interior, such as the skylight covered shower and the
outdoor bathtub just outside the sleeping areas, the al fresco dining area with the long table to the side of the foyer, and the multi-purpose area in front of the structure that can be a yoga platform or a stargazing theatre. Through a carefully constructed symbiosis with the surrounding nature, the minimal footprint structure contains within itself endless possibilities. Tree house, lawn, Formosa black bear, and an infinity pool with an opening of an angle of 130 to embrace the sea.

ARCHITECTURAL PLATINUM SPEAKERS PUT HIGH-END SOUND IN-WALL PLATINUM IN-WALL II Monitor Audio’s new Platinum In-Wall II model offers flagship build quality and performance with a super-discreet style.

ustom installers are turning to architectural solutions as a way to reduce the impact of multiple speakers on space and room design. While this is aesthetically desirable, sound quality is often compromised. To end this compromise, Monitor Audio has taken the quality and performance of its flagship Platinum II freestanding hi-fi speakers for discreet in-wall applications. The innovative new Platinum In-Wall II design offers integrators a no-compromise option, combining the audiophile accuracy, bandwidth and dynamics of the hi-fi speakers with the luxury of flush-withthe- surface installation. The Platinum In-Wall II is a threeway reference architectural speaker system, perfect for custom home theatre projects where lifelike scale and dynamics are demanded. Equipped with an adjustable mid/high frequency driver array, the In-Wall is able to deliver pin-point audio imaging and consistency from both vertical or horizontal positions. By rotating the array though 90 degrees at the
centre of a LCR configuration for instance, a soundstage of three Platinum In-Wall IIs will generate the seamless tonal integrity of the finest boxed systems from a stealthy in-wall location.
Audiophile In-Wall In keeping with the rigour of Platinum II design, the In-Wall’s cabinet is as free of mechanical resonance as possible. Its heavily damped and cross-braced composite structure of steel back plate and 25mm (1 inch) MDF joins a front baffle made of AntiResonance CompositeTM (ARC) material, designed to provide an optimally rigid and stable foundation for the state-ofthe-art Platinum II drivers. Twin 6.5” RDT®II bass drivers are positioned astride a centre pairing of Platinum II’s Micro Pleated Diaphragm (MPD) High Frequency Transducer and 4” RDT II mid-range. The MPD transducer has a surface area around eight times that of a conventional dome, allowing for much greater efficiency and lower distortion. Bonded to the diaphragm’s surface, the driver coil takes
the form of a conductive track, which is extremely light and able to reproduce low-level nuances with higher definition. In tandem with lower native distortion, the absence of diaphragm breakup modes ensures that high frequencies are accurate and faithful to the original recording. Precision-engineered to partner the tweeter’s impressive fidelity, the midrange driver uses an innovative RDT II (Rigid Diaphragm Technology generation II) cone, comprising ultra-thin skins of C-CAM and woven carbonfibre, bonded to a honeycomb Nomex® core. Developed specifically for Platinum II, this extraordinarily light and rigid structure features the lowest distortion cone technology in Monitor Audio’s history. The In-Wall’s lightning-fast RDT II mid-driver dovetails with its MPD tweeter in a damped and sealed enclosure to generate a naturally lucid and expressive sonic quality from 300Hz to over 100kHz. Below 300Hz, dual, dished, 6.5” RDT II bass drivers, optimised for sealed box operation, are designed for high excursions with extremely low signal distortion.
For more information, please visit: www.monitoraudio.co.uk
As part of the exacting Platinum II design regimen, the crossovers have been refined using the finest hand-picked metallised polypropylene film capacitors and air-core inductors in the shortest signal path for maximum signal transfer and power handling. A ‘stealthy’ matt-black baffle allows the Platinum In-Wall II to be used behind a screen in a blacked-out custom theatre setting. Alternatively, its ultraslim flat mesh grille can be painted to match room décor. Invisible magnetic grille fixings provide a neat and easy way to fix and remove the grilles during installation or servicing. The In-Wall has been designed for simple retro-fit installation through Monitor Audio’s easy and secure Tri-GripTM dog leg fixings. Additional roomtuning is available through baffle-mounted mid and high frequency level controls (+1/0/1 dB). The new Platinum In-Wall II is a true wide-bandwidth speaker system optimised for in-wall applications and capable of accurate audio reproduction from 52Hz to 100 KHz for the ultimate in discreet high performance multichannel sound.

A Striking And Unusual Facade Manufactured From RMIG Precision Perforated Aluminium Panels Helps Take This Modern School Building In A New Direction
When embarking on the challenging project of constructing a secondary school building, Lyngdal Municipality wanted to go in a new direction. The goal of the project was to create a progressive and innovative school building, with the emphasis on high quality and functional solutions. The facade on the new school building is both simple and complex in its design and has been created with the use of RMIG round hole perforation combined with RMIG ImagePerf.
The core of the building is constructed in concrete and steel and the elegant effect of the perforated aluminium panels serves as a striking contrast and gives the school building a lighter character. Due to the varying distance between the cladding and the walls, the appearance of this unusual and attractive facade changes according to the light, bringing depth to the images. www.city-emotion.com email: info.uk@rmig.com

Selectaglaze secondary glazing brings peace
Secondary glazing is fitted to the room side
and quiet to affluent luxury apartments, in a Grade II Listed building in the heart of London’s West End. 5-6 Connaught Place has been converted by Redrow London, into exclusive luxurious apartments. Located in the heart of London, overlooking Hyde Park, these beautiful Grade II Listed properties have the opulent shopping districts of Bond Street and Savile Row nearby.
of the existing primary windows and is the most effective way of reducing unwanted noise. A total of 69 units were installed including curved units. Each secondary glazed unit is tailor made to ensure the closest fit. As secondary glazing is a discreet and reversible adaptation, it is ideal for Listed properties and is widely accepted by most heritage bodies.
Initially built as townhouses in the early 19th century the properties were converted into office space after the Second World War, and have now been restored to their original purpose - luxury homes fit for modern living. John Sisk & Sons Ltd sought advice from Selectaglaze to assist in reducing the external noise levels.
Established in 1966, and Royal Warrant Holders since 2004 Selectaglaze has a wealth of experience with working on all building types. Selectaglaze will be presenting their RIBA approved CPD at Vision London, Olympia. Stand No: 22, the 7-8th June.

Old Post Office Idea Exchange RDH Architects (RDHA) Architectural Review Future Project Awards
Archetech - Page 18
RDH Architects (RDHA) and the City of Cambridge received international recognition this week for their Old Post Office Idea Exchange project, receiving a commendation in the “Old and New” category at the 2016 Architectural Review MIPIM Future Projects Awards in Cannes, France. “We’re thrilled to be receiving international attention on a local project that is so important to our community,” said Mayor Doug Craig. “Not only will the new digital library be an exciting community space, but also a culturally significant addition to one of our downtown cores.”
The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards recognize planned or incomplete projects across 12 categories. The “Old and New” category features projects where a new building is being placed alongside an existing historic building or in a historically significant setting. The awards were assessed by an international jury chaired this year by Paul Finch, editorial director of The Architectural Review and The Architects’ Journal. “We are extremely pleased to have received such a great honour for the Old Post Office Idea Exchange project,” remarked Tyler Sharp, principal and design director for RDH Architects (RDHA).
“This level of international recognition is the result of a great synergy between the rigour of our design process and the great ambitions of the City of Cambridge and Idea Exchange.” The post office project will see a complete restoration of the existing historic building along with new glass additions that will increase usable space and improve accessibility. Combining glass structures with the heritage building will allow the historic elements to remain on display while still providing a space suited to modern use.
“This is an exciting community project and a breakthrough opportunity for heritage and the future to intersect,” said Idea Exchange CEO Helen Kelly. “The building is magnificent and the revitalization will provide a dynamic space for makers, learners and readers of all ages to gather and explore.”
The new digital library will offer programs and services for all ages. From 3D printers to recording suites to a teen creative space and onsite restaurant, the renovated historic post office building will be an entrepreneurial hub in Cambridge; a place for all members of the community to engage, collaborate and innovate.
RDH Architects (RDHA) RDHA is a full service architectural design studio located in Toronto. Originally founded in 1919, RDHA is one of Canada’s oldest practices. Over the last century, the firm has produced a wide range of work, from turn of the century residences and corporate headquarters, to industrial facilities, academic buildings and libraries. The core of our current work is dedicated to the public realm, and although we do not restrict the nature of the projects we take on, we have become first and foremost public architects.
Page 19 - Archetech
RDHA is led by a unique intergenerational partnership of four principals: Tyler Sharp, Bob Goyeche, Robert Boyko and Geoffrey Miller. While the firm is one of the oldest practices in Canada, the current partners have transformed the firm over the last decade, redefining the office structure, the creative design process and the mission to produce Architecture of the highest caliber.
Trotec Laser:
Providing Precision to your Prototype Trotec is internationally recognised as the leading manufacturer of computercontrolled laser machines for laser engraving, laser cutting and laser marking. Laser technology offers the highest level of precision when creating architectural models. With the ability to mark details as fine as 1 pt, a Trotec Laser aids in replicating even the most intricate of details. Filigree designs and the most detailed geometric shapes can be created to the nearest tenth of a millimetre due to the lasers ultra-fine beam, allowing you to work to the highest level of accuracy. Unlimited possibilities A Trotec Laser can process with ease the wide range of materials used in the construction of architectural models including acrylic, laminates, wood, textiles, cardboard, foam, polystyrene, films and many more. The patented flexx series of Trotec lasers enables the user to also mark metal by incorporating both fiber and CO2 laser sources in one job without the need to physically interchange tubes. The user friendly software, JobControl, enables the user to identify which sections are suited to fiber or CO2 simply by colour coding, saving both time and money.
A multitude of benefits over traditional tools A Trotec laser offers a wide range of benefits over traditional cutting and engraving methods such as milling, plotting and sawing. As the laser evaporates the material, no swarf or shavings are produced, reducing disposal costs. The beam remains 'laser sharp' and can process a range of materials in varying thicknesses and shapes without the requirement for many different tool heads. Thus reducing production time and eradicates sharpening costs. A Trotec laser allows contactless material processing. No pressure is exerted on the material, reducing preparation time and the risk of damage, which is present when clamping material during milling. Laser cutting also produces crystal clear edges when handling acrylic, removing the requirement for manual flame polishing. Customers confirm that when cutting individual components using a Trotec laser, production times can be reduced by up to 80% compared to manual production methods. "The speed, quality of the finished product and efficiency are all far superior" explains customer Phoebe Nickols, Architectural Assistant at Liddicoat & Goldhill.
Arrange a demonstration at one of Trotec's seven regional showrooms throughout the UK and Ireland to experience the capabilities of a Trotec laser and find the system is as simple to operate as a printer. Visit www.troteclaser.co.uk or call 0191 580 1182. A wide range of materials including laminates, wood and acrylic are also available from Trotec's new engraving materials range at www.engraving-supplies.co.uk

TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION UNIQUE INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO CONSTRUCTION Danilith brings a unique and innovative approach to any self build or development project. Bespoke design, traditional appearance, quality materials and hand finishing combine with solid insulated walls and floors, excellent air tightness, and high thermal mass to ensure an efficient, comfortable environment throughout the year.
Archetech - Page 22
Danilith Delmulle has built over 15,000 bespoke homes in Belgium and neighbouring European Countries. This unique factory built system is available in the UK. The innovative method of construction creates brick faced insulated panels, with external windows and doors fitted during manufacture resulting in a fast accurate build with low air leakage and good thermal mass. Self builders can benefit from the quick erection time allowing internal work to commence in a dry envelope in a very short time. With construction costs similar to that of traditional dwellings the reduced build times translate into time and cost savings.
SPEED COMBINED WITH QUALITY
BESPOKE DESIGN
A typical dwelling can be completed to a weathertight structure within three weeks including foundations all internal & external walls, floors, and a felted weathertight roof.
Because of the way our buildings are constructed virtually any design can be created using the Danilith system. The standard brick finish can be omitted to accommodate any combination of render, timber or composite cladding and bluestone detailing added to windows and doors.
Factory built construction allows a greater control of quality and consistency than traditional build. Using a unique approach, brick faced insulated concrete panels are assembled in computer controlled factory conditions. Windows and doors are built in during manufacture ensuring superior air tightness. Solid internal walls & floors and high levels of insulation all combine to produce superior robust dwellings, with improved SAP ratings, better sound attenuation and balanced thermal characteristics. Creating traditional finishes in a controlled environment ensures a high quality product. Bricks are selected and mixed by hand, then robotically placed to give a consistent appearance to all elevations. Pointing and finishes are then carried out by hand to give a traditional appearance.
THERMAL MASS EFFECT Heat energy is stored more efficiently in high density structures such as concrete than in low density structures such as timber frame. Thermal Mass will regulate the internal temperature so while outside temperatures may vary considerably between day and night or through the seasons, the internal temperature remains stable thus reducing the need for energy to heat and preventing overheating. Keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Optimal benefits from a Danilith dwelling can be achieved by the use of under floor heating systems and a smart ventilation system, improving air quality and removing excess moisture.

Novellini History '60s 1966
Novellini began as a small artisan company which Specialised in using wrought iron and aluminium to produce doors and windows. Barbara Novellini, now CEO, was born the year the company started.
2016
After 50 years, Novellini continues to take care of your well-being. In addition to a quality product, we now offer the ability to choose the product solution that is just right for you on our very useful and effective website. We also provide advice and inspiration using social media.
'10s
'70s
2011
1967
In 2011, the company's technological resources were enriched by a new, important shower customisation project. The use of digital printing on glass allowed the creation of the IN ART collection. This technology allows printing any high resolution image on glass, thus creating endless possibilities for customising products.
Gianfranco Novellini's entrepreneurial talent first emerged when he designed "Mary," the original folding mosquito net, named after his mother.
1974
The creation of the first shower enclosure. The first shower enclosure was created the year Marco Novellini, also a current CEO, was born and thus, bears his name.
2007
Elysium, a range of high-quality products, was founded in 2007 and is designed to fit into the TOP Design Furnishings Market.
'80s 1980
Shower enclosure production proved profitable. With it, Novellini achieved success in the European market. The aesthetic evolution of the product and the growth of the range led to the insertion of new materials, new technologies. In order to increase product safety, Novellini integrated the annealing of glass into the production process. Metal external finishes and toughened glass form the technical foundation of the shower.
2000
The new millennium also represented an important change in the IT systems for Novellini with the introduction of SAP software and web technologies, and setting up a new Technology Warehouse. In the last decade, the focus on 'simple' products, like shower enclosures, has continually increased. Demands for customisation have multiplied and the company has had an increasingly direct relationship with the end-user.
1986
Creation of Novellini's "Coloratissimi"
'00s 2000
At the beginning of the new millennium, the Novellini Group began its most important investment programme to date, involving the redesign of production layouts, logistics and sales organisation. A number of things were added to the production departments including: a "smart" warehouse; a new, completely automated, final assembly department; and new glassware.
1988
The company grew. In addition to the production site and facilities in Mantua, the first Novellini warehouses were established in Italy and Europe to greatly improve distribution and service.
'90s 1990
In the 1990s, the product range expanded to include whirlpools. The Novellini Group, strengthened by its industrial, technical and commercial capacity, gained a manufacturing facility for producing acrylic baths and launched new products.
1995
The second half of the 1990s saw the start of a reorganisation process to facilitate integrated production in all its operations. The departments in charge of processing of raw materials expanded significantly.

Mermaid Panels
Mermaid Panels, the leading brand of waterproof wall panel systems in the UK, has been established for over 30 years and they believe they have created the ultimate waterproof panel systems, products that fulfils all the requirements of tiles, but with none of the stress. Mermaid’s panel systems are not just for the home and the bathroom - they are ideal for a number of architectural and commercial applications and are commonly used as part of office shower and changing areas.
Archetech - Page 28
The key benefits of the product compared to ceramic tiles are simple: Saving - on average laminated panels will be 25% cheaper than installing tiles. This is mainly because Mermaid panels do not require a specialist tile fitter. As an addition to this Mermaid panels last much longer than tiles further saving on the full life cost. No Mould - There’s no grout used with Mermaid panels, so in the long run that means no mould. This makes the panels easier to clean, and keeps them looking great for years to come.
Beautiful Crafted Surfaces
Speed - Again because no grout is used, Mermaid panels are much quicker to fit than tiles. Clean & Safe - A large selection of panels are now available with a Microban Coating. Mermaid are the only panel suppler to incorporate this specialist element into the panel during the production process, which means that once bacteria comes into contact with the surface, the bacteria perish. Watertight Guarantee - The Mermaid panel system is guaranteed to remain watertight and waterproof for ten years from date of purchase. Glass Panels Mermaid’s glass panels are produced in 6mm toughened glass in a range of over 40 standard colours, with further colours available by special request. After the special painting process the back of the panels are protected using a vinyl film to both prevent damage and stop light transition through the panel.
Acrylic Panels Acrylic panels provide an excellent alternative to glass in a broad range of standard colours ex-stock, but can also be supplied in our colour match RAL system, or digital image selector.

When it comes to cork, few are as ingenious as Granorte and the manufacturer is continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this incredibly versatile and sustainable material.
recognised with the iF Design Award 2015, the Green Good Design Award 2015 and has been shortlisted for the German Design Awards 2016.
Yet few would imagine that cork could be used as the material in a range of sanitary ware, but that is exactly what Granorte has done with NuSpa baths and sink units, recognised as a truly innovative concept at three international design awards.
“NuSpa has broken new ground, creating large-scale forms that bring fresh possibilities for this sustainable raw material,” comments Paulo Rocha, R&D, Granorte. “The potential for the technology means that we can consider cork as a material that can be sculpted into forms and shapes that were simply not possible before.
Honed by CAM from a solid block of agglomerated cork, NuSpa has been
It is great to receive recognition of this significant advance in material
technology from internationally recognised awards. We hope that NuSpa represents the first step in a new era of cork products that prove the material is as versatile as an object as it has proved to be as a surface,” concludes Paulo. Cork is bestowed with superb natural properties that help NuSpa to maintain water temperature, make it safer in impact and more comfortable in use; the ultimate in luxurious bathing. The Granorte NuSpa Freestanding Bathtub is priced from £6,250, with Washbasins starting from £500. For further information, www.granorte.co.uk.
Helpful new information for the Metal Fabrication sector from tesa® According to the Office of National Statistics the metal fabrication sector in the UK accounts for around 10% of all manufacturing jobs and roughly the same percentage of gross added value. Many of the participants in this industry are small or medium sized businesses which need constantly to look for process improvements and cost efficiencies to sustain margins and guarantee future development. As part of its tesacohesion policy of customer service, leading adhesive tape supplier tesa has produced a useful range overview listing its most popular products, which can contribute towards these goals. Analysis on the use of double-sided tapes throughout many of the major industrial sectors – Automotive, Aerospace, Construction, Paint and Manufacturing, for example – shows why they are now the solution of first choice. Apart from their ease of storage and use, tesa tapes often improve the speed and efficiency of the manufacturing process. In terms of end results, the use of double-sided tapes offers distinct aesthetic benefits, with no weld marks and heat spots or unsightly mechanical fixings such as screws or rivets. So far as performance is concerned, tapes are dependable and offer excellent stress distribution across the surface of bonded parts with no weak points.
The tesa Metal Fabrication Assortment Overview is available to download online at tesa. co.uk/metalfabrication.

tesa’s new overview of its tapes for the metal fabrication market includes their filmic, high density and general purpose foam tapes, together with a range of masking tapes and other general purpose grades. The most recent additions are from its ACXplus offering, a high resistance product, tesa ACXplus 707x which has been developed with demanding outdoor applications in mind, able to resist temperatures up to 220˚C and cold shock down to -40˚C. Also tesa ACXplus 706x, designed for use on hard-to-bond materials such as powder coated or plastic parts, and able to compensate for the varying thermal expansion of different substrates.

Connect with SketchUp 2016
Archetech - Page 34
With the latest release of SketchUp 2016 we’re integrating Trimble Connect directly into SketchUp. As a refresher, Connect is Trimble’s platform for storing, syncing, referencing, sharing, and collaborating on design/build projects. Sign up for a free account, then start uploading .skp, .pdf, .dxf, .ifc. files. With this integration, we’re packaging the current Trimble Connect Extension into the installer. The TC integration is accessible from the File menu, and will allow users to upload, pull down, and update SKP’s from Trimble Connect project folders. As you’re modelling you can even pull in and update reference SketchUp models as if they were locally hosted components. Learn more about Trimble Connect... In SketchUp 2016, a context click on a component gives you the opportunity to reload (or swap out) a new component directly from 3D Warehouse. This action will reload every instance of that component in your model (similar to the same action in the Components Browser),
so it’s a helpful method for working with proxy models. And if your component was downloaded from 3D Warehouse, you can also use the context-click to quickly access its 3DWH details page. With this release, LayOut’s reference objects are now web friendly. That means your LayOut projects can reference and update files that are stored and synced with services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Trimble Connect Sync. When you reference a file from any of these services (.skp or otherwise), LayOut will notify you when an update is available for your ‘web reference.’ Say goodbye to missing references when different people are working on the same .layout document within a cloud sync folder that also contains the referenced files. We’re proud to announce our first step towards an extension ecosystem for LayOut. Using this new API, developers can now create and customize .layout files from SketchUp models. Practically, this means that
other applications can import or export the *.layout file format using the C API. (This includes creating a .layout file from SketchUp.). We have several sample scripts for developers to try out at release, along with a blog post where they can learn more. Learning and utilising SketchUp’s inference engine makes for fast and precise modelling. In this release, we’ve oiled that engine to provide slicker inferencing and locking across the board. This improvement is actually an entire set of smart tweaks we’ve made to inferencing and locking. You can download SketchUp Pro 2016 for free on a 30 day trial. After this time, the software will revert to SketchUp Make. Elmtec is the distribution partner for SketchUp in the UK. Time Cost Conscious Comar
Archetech - Page 38
As a leading British firm with systems designed for the British commercial fenestration market, Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems has been in business for thirty years. Comar is 100% British and privately owned meaning that Comar face the same constraints and worries as their approved fabricator network in the current prevailing economic climate. However, Comar are enjoying unprecedented success and having survived several UK recessions, here, Comar talk about how their systems and business practices are securing record levels of work for their approved fabricator network. Costs associated with time are rarely quantified in a busy business, dealing with poor suppliers who have unreliable lead times becomes part of then norm and these subsequent costs are swallowed as day-to-day running costs. Companies will invest in machine tools to minimise production costs, but rarely look at the efficiency of their suppliers as this involves the short-term pain of changing over to a new unknown, supplier.
Comar invest in stock so that their fabricators don’t have to, thus freeing up valuable financial resources. For polyester powder coating and dual colour Comar have invested in another facility next door to the industry renowned Barley Chalu, ensuring coating commences as soon as the order arrives. Here stocks of mill finish ready to be powder coated speed up coating leadtimes to the best in the aluminium industry. Comar carry most profiles in a standard white finish at their head offices so white materials can be delivered to fabricators on their next weekly delivery. As Comar own and control their own logistics fleet, this means that fabricators who have large orders can rely on flexibility of delivery when demanded. Intrinsically, all Comar systems are multifunction profiles and accessories: profiles have been designed so they can be used in a variety of systems and applications. This means fabricator knowledge of the profile range is quickly assimilated and wastage is reduced because profiles can be used on the next project. In summary Comar is British by Design.
This not only means aluminium facades for curtain walling, windows, doors and ground floor treatment that provide longevity and legacy it means a British designed infrastructure to deliver to the uniquely demanding, time-critical British construction market. www.comar-alu.co.uk - 0208 685 9685 projects@parksidegroup.co.uk

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell.
Archetech - Page 40
In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods
which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

GEZE UK Creates Uplifting Entrance For Spitfire-Shaped Building
Archetech - Page 42
The Wing, an eye-catching building designed to echo the shape and uplift of a Spitfire’s wings, features an expansive curved glass viewing platform on the first floor. So, it naturally needed an entrance that would reflect the style of the building and GEZE UK, renowned for its curved automatic sliding door systems, was top of the list. To echo the lines of the viewing platform, GEZE installed two of its popular Slimdrive SCR all-glass circular lobbies to create two impressive entrances to the Wing, which houses a new visitor and education centre for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust at Capel-le-Ferne in Kent. The first provides access from the car park to the building and the second,
directly opposite, provides access to the memorial outside. Situated on top of the white cliffs, between Dover and Folkestone, the award-winning building is truly open to the elements. It was therefore important to choose the right automatic door system because prevailing winds can affect the operation of some doors. Furthermore, the creation of a lobby helps to limit heat loss contributing to a building’s environmental credentials and prevents blasts of hot or cold air which are uncomfortable for staff and visitors. Each circular lobby features two sets of automatic bi-parting curved sliding glass doors to create an accessible, draughtfree entrance.
The doors are powered by GEZE’s Slimdrive SCR drive which has an operating height of just 7cm, making the installation almost invisible and enhancing the all-glass effect. Installing curved doors can increase the size of the entrance by up to 40 per cent compared to sliding doors, making them ideal for lobbies that experience high levels of footfall.
The Wing is home to The Scramble Experience, a hands-on attraction that allows visitors to learn more about what it was like for ‘the Few’ during the summer and early autumn of 1940.
It has already received more than 55,000 visitors since it was opened by Her Majesty the Queen accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in March 2015.
Andy Howland, sales director of GEZE UK, said: “It’s often said that a building’s design is unique, but in the case of the Wing, which has been designed to remind visitors of WWII’s most iconic aircraft, the Spitfire, it truly is.
The Slimdrive SCR is simple to operate and like all of GEZE’s Slimdrive range, it has been designed and tested to meet the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including Building Bulletin 93, Approved Documents B and M. It also assists with the vigorous demands of the Equality Act. The Wing is just the latest in a long line of high profile tourist attractions that
GEZE UK has created entrance solutions for. Other projects include the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre, Blenheim Palace and the Theatre Royal Glasgow, to name but a few. “The Wing is an eye-catching, high quality building that was designed to make a statement while at the same time respecting its surroundings and not detracting from the Memorial itself. The Trust is delighted with the design, the quality of the building and the reaction from visitors,” said Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, Richard Hunting CBE.
We are always delighted to have the opportunity to work on such high profile projects and the Wing is no exception. The circular lobby created by the Slimdrive SCR, reflects the cockpit-style viewing platform and has been designed to allow the building’s many visitors to enter quickly and easily.”
‘Aluprof's BIM Library - Level 2 Ready’ The importance of having a complete library of BIM objects to hand and in the right format is a crucial step forward in order to meet the construction industrys' planned strategy efficiency targets for 2025, these include a 50% reduction in programme and a 33% reduction in overall construction costs. Aluprof are at the forefront of BIM technology and are already compliant with Revitt level 2 models, which is ahead of this years April deadline set by the government for public sector asset procurement. Part of the BIM Toolkit project, Aluprof’s systems have been implemented under Uniclass 2015, a single unified classification system for any type of building construction or infrastructure project. For specifiers and fabrication customers of Aluprof, BIM models are available for immediate download from the company website www.aluprof.eu/en. Aluprof are currently looking at BIM Level 3 compliance, currently scheduled for adoption in 2019, this level suggests using a single source, shared project model held in a central location, such as a cloud server. By being accessible by all parties involved in the project, they should be able to work on and construct the same electronic model. Currently known as ‘OpenBIM’, BIM Level 3 is the first model which will fully connect the supply and data chain from start to finish creating end to end efficiencies throughout the construction life cycle. Aluprof systems are increasingly being specified on a wide range of residential and commercial projects across the UK. Systems are designed, fabricated and installed by selected, specially trained companies, to ensure each fabricated product meets the Aluprof exacting standards. www.aluprof.eu 161 941 4005.

Cathedral Of Créteil Extension In 2009, on the initiative of Bishop Santier, the diocesan association of Créteil, supported by the Chantiers du Cardinal, opted for an ambitious project to expand the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Créteil. Conceived by Charles-Gustave Stoskopf, holder of the Prix de Rome, this architecture is typical of the 1970s when “the theology of blending-in” prevailed at the time. It is part of the contemporary heritage of the City of Créteil.
Archetech - Page 48
The commission was to double the capacity of the cathedral and to enhance its visibility towards the city. More than a renovation, this project involved a major redevelopment of the cathedral, giving it a new architectural lease on life from a symbolic and pastoral point of view. The new cathedral is anchored in a multicultural city, which includes five Catholic churches, ten synagogues, a mosque, a Protestant church, four Evangelical churches, a Buddhist temple and a Bahai assembly. A dialogue between two different architectural styles, yet consistent, is established. The dome pointing skywards is based on the footprint of the original cathedral. The silhouette of the entrance, on a human scale, is now joined with the monumental proportions of the new project, focusing on the nave of the cathedral that extends from two spherical wood-clad hulls, like two hands joined in prayer that meet above the altar.
Large gatherings can be held in this new space. The existing sanctuary has been remodeled and the benches are placed in a broad semicircle. In daylight, the stained-glass window located at the junction of the two hulls shed a colored light onto the sanctuary, while at night, illuminated from inside, they become the symbol of a living Christian community. The steeple, detached from the building on the corner of the forecourt, marks the cathedral entrance with its slender silhouette, punctuated by three bells from the old campanile. It restores the building urban scale and become a sign in the city beside the large residential buildings of the neighborhood. The view onto the cathedral forecourt is freed by opening the curtain of trees. The new square, built by the city on the opposite side, is an amenity for local residents, and an extension of parish life.
in place of the former garden. It is marked by the presence of the baptistry. We decided that this axis, which would be the route of solemn processions in the cathedral, would become the standard for arranging all the structures: thus the supporting arches of the shells are all drawn in parallel to this liturgical axis. This unique and particular architectural expansion is defined by the liturgical axis. The geometric complexity of the design – each arch is unique, mirrored on either side of the axis – creates a space under tension, at once static and dynamic. Each mouvement becomes a particular experience, especially through the “accelerations” of transparencies and opacities created by the progress of the arches on the spherical curve of the hulls. This architecture in motion is illustrated by the steady arch of the hanged platform at the centre of the cathedral, thus creating a long travelling.
A Space Structured By The Liturgy Having thus determined the architectural element of the project, we still had to determine the specifics. The new spatial organisation of the cathedral provided us with the framework we needed. The two cylindrical concrete walls that support a horizontal terrace situated about 5 metres high from the ground, become two tridimensional wooden hulls that converge at 20 metres above the altar. The liturgical axis was born from the creation of a chapel facing the sanctuary,
The Warmth Of Wood The white architecture of Stoskopf serves as the setting for the new cathedral, clad all in wood, inside and out. This unity of material refers back to the ancient cathedrals, where the mass of these stone vessels was cut and chiseled by the light. This allows a straightforward reading of the two layers of the building, but most importantly, stands for unity and simplicity.
The repetition of spruce arches gives rhythm to the interior decorative style of the hulls. The intention here is not to offer an optimal structure, calculated to the finest degree, nor to display any technical prowess, but to characterise the density of a sacramental space. There are as many arches as intertwinning possibilities at the top of the dome. The boat of Peter, fisher of souls, is also suggested here. Outside, the cladding of the hull and the steeple are also handled in wood, following the same parallel geometry of the arches. The wooden strips of Douglas fir are pre-shaded to ensure an aesthetically uniform ageing. Wood is a natural, living material, at once humble and noble. It lends itself perfectly to the design of the building’s curves. Its warmth also serves as a pattern of a fraternal community, united in the celebration of the sacraments of the Church. And By The Light Another mouvement, another axis, perpendicular to the previous one, crosses the space of the cathedral. This axis is the one of the stained glass, whose colored light encircles the space from its zenith. There is also an ascending path that rises to the source of this light: a mouvement from the altar to the two access steps to the gallery, which is
extended by the curve of the stained glass. A path of light hangs vertically from the altar, climax of the composition of the Udo Zembok’s magnificent stained glass. The cross thus signs this space in three Dimensions, a space that vibrates to the rhythm of day and seasons, the orientation of the cathedral on the points of the compass — give or take a few degrees — and the positioning of the stained glass at the head of the southern hull, allowing the building to receive sunlight throughout the day.
crosssection wooden ribs interrupt the continuous ribbon of glass. Our artistic response to the given architectural shape is based on the idea that the incident sunlight artistically metamorphoses and thus should enter equally „sublimated“ into the sacred space. Paradoxically, however, light itself is invisible, because it is only perceptible to our senses when it reflects on material or flows through filters. The simplicity of the concept and composition opens up a range of different levels of understanding for the observant visitor. The spectrum ranges from our delight in chromatic filtered colours and their effects on the interior architecture of the cathedral, to the concept of the three primary colours of light, their spatial positions and the symbolism of the Holy Trinity. The Cultural Centre
The architectural concept of two intersecting shellshaped spatial forms celebrate a space which unfolds like a border along the interface of the two volumes. This space, designed as a glass arch, is the field of play for this commission. Spatially, the semicircular arc opens up from east to west. As the only source of natural light the arc culminates at the zenith, vertically centred over the altar. At regular intervals,
The extension of the cathedral included the creation of a cultural centre intended to offer cultural and artistic events to the Val-de-Marne’s inhabitants. A conference room and a small auditorium occupy the space originally dedicated to two multipurpose rooms. These spaces are accessible through an exhibition gallery that connects the two entrance narthexes. At its centre, a skylight allows a glimpse of the cross on the steeple. The sunlight goes trough a skylight and illuminates the entrance to each room. Near the large narthex, a bookstore café creates a friendly space at the entrance of the cathedral. Structure And Support
Page 49 - Archetech
The main structure of the timber framing is composed of approximately 130 glue-laminated arches (16x75cm) ; the longest extrados arch is 26.5 metres and the smallest bending radius is 6 metres. The arches are arranged in a system of parallel beams placed 56cm from one another. The arches are jointed on the bottom by fittings, bolts and a metal axis. The coupling on the top of the two hulls is achieved by assembling alternately the northern and southern arches resting on a connecting laminated glued beam with fittings, bolts and nails. The roof deck batten is then attached directly to the main structure; the cross-laying of battens allows them to bending on the glued laminated arches.

Lomax Builders Ltd breathes new life into Victorian School Thanks to Minus7’s award-winning hybrid technology, Lomax Builders Ltd blends stylish, subtle design with efficient eco-friendly innovation in their refurbishment of a beautiful Victorian School House. “With so many choices on the market, it’s hard to know what you’re getting” said David Lomax “but Minus7 have been really good. When people ask me, would you use them again? I say Yes!” Zero net carbon; zero net running costs by design.
Archetech - Page 52
Using the best of solar thermal, photovoltaic, heat pump and energy storage technologies in one simple aesthetically pleasing building-integrated solution, Minus7 enables the ownerlandlord of the School House to charge a reduced price for heat to tenants, creating an additional revenue stream alongside the rental income. “The theory behind Minus7 is mindblowing; it just makes so much sense” The system is comprised of three parts – a roof, a Solar Energy Processor and thermal stores, fulfilling the heating and hot water needs of happy tenants who control the system via traditional thermostats and timers.
Working with conventional roof construction methods, Minus7 bespoke roof tile planks blend in seamlessly without need for unsightly bolt on panels. Weighing 27kilos per square metre – the equivalent of Welsh slate - two areas of St Mark’s Boys School House roof have been replaced with Minus7 tileplanks in slate grey. Quietly and discretely, they absorb energy day and night, down to temperatures of minus 7 degrees Celsius. This energy is then stored in three thermal stores, completely hidden under an area of decking in the courtyard, allowing the distinctive Victorian character of this beautiful building to be retained. The solar energy processor further ensures Minus7 meets its bespoke contractual annual heat provision performance guarantee, provided with every Minus7 project.
Appealingly simple Lomax Builders Ltd has been so impressed with Minus7’s performance and customer care that they are now starting their third large development utilising Minus7 technology. Minus7’s in-house design and installation team provides creative suggestions appropriate for each project’s aesthetic and innovative needs. Remote monitoring services provides complete transparency of the energy generated, used and stored, allowing the Minus7 after-care service team to proactively ensure the system is working as efficiently as possible, without disrupting its occupants.

Consistorial De Constituci贸n / PLAN Arquitectos Constituci贸n Town Hall building was conceived not only because of the need to unify all local government offices in one building but also as part of the reconstruction of the city, which was devastated by an earthquake in 2010. The building is located in the civic center and adjacent to Current Town Hall building, which should be remodel. The city has a particularity compared to other medium-sized cities in central Chile,
because, in front of its "main square", it has an equal sized site, open and walkable, called "The Civic Center ", which is transformed into a complex of two connected spaces visually unified.
The virtue of this is that an open place originates and, therefore, drivable and observable from many points of view, being a noninvasive project to the current morphology of the place.
In this "Civic Center", our project is defined a separate series of volumes and shapes isolated among themselves, where the existing building is located.
A number of circulations unify these volumes, including the existing building, allowing access to the town hall departments from different locations, resulting in a better versatility and approaching to the building by users.
On the other side, we had a technicall difficulty on the foundation system, due to the presence of one meter depth underneath water, which surrounded the building by all sides on the underground parking level. We opted for a foundation slab with a one meter outside ballast, opposed to the water uplifting pressure.
This solution was combined with a continuous waterproof membrane that prevents water ingress to the lower level. The advantage of this solution lies in respecting the levels of groundwater flows, which is environmentally friendly, also achieving energy savings by this procedure.
Page 57 - Archetech
The heights of the project are determined by volumes in context, maintaining two floor levels on the edge, same as the existing building, and three floor levels in the inner part of the project, matching the height of the already demolished ancient theater and its new replacement building.
Vertical Glass House Atelier FCJZ Vertical Glass House was designed by Yung Ho Chang as an entry to the annual Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition organized by the Japan Architect magazine in 1991. Chang received an Honorable Mention award for the project. Twenty-two years later in 2013, the West Bund Biennale of Architecture and Contemporary Art in Shanghai decided to build it as one of its permanent pavilions. Vertical Glass House is an urban housing prototype and discusses the notion of transparency in verticality while serving as a critic of Modernist transparency in horizontality or a glass house that always opens to landscape and provides no privacy. While turning the classic glass house 90 degrees, Vertical Glass House is on one hand spiritual: With enclosed walls and transparent floors as well as roof, the house opens to the sky and the earth, positions the inhabitant right in the middle, and creates a place for meditation. On the other hand, Vertical Glass House is material: Vertical transparency visually connects all the utilities, ductworks, furniture pieces on different levels, as well as the staircase, into a system of domesticity and provides another reading of the modern theory of “Architecture as living machine.

The Mellier Behind this handsome Beaux-Arts facade in the heart of Mayfair, The Mellier includes five voluminous lateral modern apartments and one extraordinary penthouse overlooking the rooftops of London. Formerly a Buick car showroom in 1930s, the building has been refurbished in 2015 by Eric Parry Architects with Studio Mackereth appointed as Interior
Designer and Creative Director for each of the apartments and the lobby - this includes sourcing all fabrics, rugs, lamps, contemporary as well as vintage furniture and works of art. A free-standing folding walnut screen ‘Albemarle’ has been designed especially for this project.
These lateral apartments benefit from a real sense of scale with spectacular ceiling heights, elegant proportions and dramatic use of light. The client’s brief was to make a brave step away from the usual bland beige formulaic interiors of most speculative residential property developments.
In response, our approach was to create luxurious apartment interiors that epitomize Modern Mayfair: bold colourful spaces that flow, settings that are dramatic without being overly formal, effortlessly stylish and unashamedly contemporary homes. “It was important that the prospective buyers walk in and can immediately imagine themselves living here. In order to create this sense of ‘home’ we sourced vintage as well as contemporary pieces from all over Europe to create a story, as if the home had evolved over time rather than the bling-yet-lifeless look of most speculative show-homes. We carefully curated a library and also briefed a florist on our overall vision so as to reinforce this sense of a real home” says Sally Mackereth.

Don’t Be A Victim Of Daylight Robbery Daylight is one of the most import aspects to the success of any internal space, ranking alongside factors like thermal efficiency and weather proofing and yet it is often compromised, or even overlooked. Daylight affects every aspect of us as human beings; our health, our sense of well-being, our ability to concentrate, our mood.
On the roof, clear domes house a patented lens system to ensure that the maximum amount of daylight is harvested, regardless of the exterior weather conditions. The light is then transmitted down the 99.7% reflected tubing to a ceiling diffuser to ensure that the daylight is distributed evenly, without any glare, in the space below.
Just because there is no opportunity to use a window, or the window that can be fitted is too small or north-facing, doesn’t mean that a natural lighting solution is not available and the area should be ignored and left totally reliant on artificial light sources.
The daylight capture domes are installed into the roof using a range of seamless, leak-proof flashings that are available to suit virtually any roof type. This allows for Solarspot systems to be employed to deliver light into any internal space that has direct access to the roof, such as a flat roof, via the attic area, or even ducted though the floor above.
Solarspot tubular daylight systems employ the world’s most reflective tubing material to duct in daylight from above.
Using this technology architects and building designers are able to deliver natural night into areas that would traditionally be left as dark spaces like internal bathrooms, corridors and stairwells. They can also be used to supplement the daylight levels in rooms with deep recesses or where windows are over-shadowed. Systems are available in a range of sizes with smaller units that can be used singularly in spaces like en suites or with larger units that can be used in multiples for larger residential or commercial areas. For more information, daylight design and product support call the Solarspot technical team on 01908 299117, email: Solarspot@syneco.co.uk or visit www.solarspot.co.uk
Banish dark and gloomy interiors with the world’s brightest sun tube system. Delivers more daylight than either Solatube or Sunpipe* Solarspot® daylight tubes are independently tested and proven to deliver more natural light than any other solar tube system. Patented dome lens systems combine with the world’s most reflective tube material to deliver more daylight from roof to room. Our one-piece, leak-proof flashings suit virtually every roof type and our unrivalled range of adjustable angles and and superreflective extensions make installation easy, even in the most complicated roof spaces. Solarspot systems can be employed singularly in windowless internal spaces like bathrooms and corridors or used in multiples to bring natural light deep into the heart of dark buildings where the daylight from windows is not enough.
‘...the Solarspot, with a transmittance of factor of 0.57, was 33% more effective than the Sunpipe at transmitting light and 44% more efficient than the Solatube.’ Systems tested: Solarspot D-38, Sunpipe 450 & Solatube 290DS *Taken from BRE report 280962

A CHANGE IN THE LAW How the Sudden 2016 Copyright Law Affects Businesses and Buyers London, 7th March – The UK Government has unexpectedly fast-tracked the 2020 deadline for businesses to stop selling replica furniture to April 2016. While the initial five years could have been sufficient for most people to make changes to their business and stock, the new deadline is likely to harm businesses and create further job losses. A Change in the Law The UK Government announced the repeal of Section 52 of the copyright, Designs & Patents Act in 2014: the copyright on furniture designs would be extended from 25 to 70 years after a designer’s death. The change in law will mean that most of the replica designs businesses are selling will become illegal. “It’s a sad time for design lovers everywhere. By abiding to the wishes of the furniture giants to hand over all the designs that were trade@cultfurniture.com

initially meant to be affordable, functional and beautiful for everyone, we’re losing more than just a legal battle. We’ll be completely out of touch with the visions of those (designers) before us “ (Fiaz Iqbal, CEO of Cult Furniture) One Businesses Fight While many businesses struggle to find ways to adapt and innovate within the new timeframe, the most logical step for Cult Furniture was to establish itself as a design studio. After learning about the possible law changes in 2014, Fiaz Iqbal put together his own in-house product design team to create Cult Designs: furniture inspired by iconic designs but with contemporary twists. “We firmly believe that everyone should have access to good design…. We hope to provide an alternative, to keep the vision of Eames alive: that good design should be affordable and for everyone, not just the rich and famous” Fiaz Iqbal, CEO of Cult Furniture

Major Brands Flock To Manchester This year’s Manchester Furniture Show (17 - 19 July, Manchester Central) has a country fair theme and promises to be a fun interiors show, with serious exhibitors and new designs that will have buyers eager to take in all the attractions. The show is the smaller sister show to the larger January Furniture Show, which is held at the NEC. For over 15 years Laraine Janes, Theresa Raymond and their team have organised this summer show in Manchester. Although not as large as January, with over 130 exhibitors in 100,000 square feet of stylish exhibition space, it is not exactly small. Unlike it’s Birmingham counterpart, it is held in the heart of the city and is a popular destination with buyers looking for something new and different for the autumn trading period. The city’s restaurants and bars are within easy walking distance of the venue and offer the chance to try something different after a day’s buying.
Archetech - Page 70
The main hall for the up-coming 2016 show had a rapid sell out and is now full. The exhibitor list is again full of
some of the leading names in furniture and interior furnishings from the UK and Europe, including Baker, Westbridge, Buoyant, Gallery Direct, Lebus, Nolte, Morris, Buoyant, Rauch, Furmanac and Whitemeadow, all of whom return having had a successful show last year. New exhibitors in furniture for 2016 include Essex based leather and fabric upholstery manufacturer Panacea, whose modern, stylish designs won many fans at this year’s January Furniture Show. Devonshire Pine & Oak from Bideford, who are one of the few remaining cabinet manufacturers in the UK, will display collections from their varied portfolio of painted, waxed and lacquered bedroom and living & dining ranges. In interior furnishings new exhibitors include family business Hookes Interiors, who will bring a wonderful array of their stylish, unique and often alternative decorative items for every room of the home. CIMC, well known for their attention grabbing mix of lamps, mirrors, frames, clocks and decorative items, in styles from Art Deco to swish Manhattan, as well as furniture items will have a large stand in the Main Hall. Also in the Main Hall and crossing the line between furniture and interior furnishings supplier, returning exhibitor Gallery Direct will show a wide variety of their stylish and design led furnishings. Launching both furniture and homeware items at Manchester, their impressive stand is sure to be a big draw for show visitors.
It isn’t just big names that cause a splash at Manchester, smaller companies who are some of the most imaginative furniture and accessory companies in the UK, including DB Mirrors, Flair Rugs, Wire Lamps and Wilde Java are all bringing new designs to tempt buyers. They will be showing everything from rustic furniture hewn from tree stumps to highly styalised individual pieces in silver and antiqued finishes, as well as lamps, mirrors, art, rugs and decorative accessories. Looking forward to this year’s show, Laraine Janes, Show Director said, “The Manchester Furniture Show always has a great buzz about it. We wanted to capture that with the country fair themed marketing and presentation of the show, demonstrating that the very important business side - which has an abundance of new exhibitors, designs and products will be irresistible to buyers, is against the backdrop of a smart and relaxed venue, in a vibrant city”. A WIRELESS HOME AUTOMATION AND MONITORING SYSTEM THAT LETS YOU TAKE COMPLETE CONTROL A new wire-free home automation and monitoring system can now transform any house or apartment into an intelligent home. Ingeny@home brings together domestic electrical systems and devices to help effectively manage and check lighting, heating, CCTV, smoke alarms and leak detection, as well as operating window blinds and multiroom audio solutions. Using the latest wireless technology, it is the most cost-effective system of its kind currently available at just a quarter of the price of a traditional, hardwired home automation solution.
The Ingeny@home app is suitable for a range of smartphones and tablets, combining all home automation needs into a single interface. Simple icons allow one-click monitoring and management of different aspects of the home for added control of everyday life and essential functions. It can be used from any room, or remotely when out, to operate and interact with home electrics or create a command where the system will complete a task automatically. The wide range of functionality includes:
MOTION DETECTORS
HEATING
LIGHTING
Compact and discreet motion sensors not only detect if someone is in the room, they can also determine temperature and lighting levels. These sensors can identify when it is evening and automatically increase brightness of your lighting or raise an alert for any suspicious movement when away. By combining motion and lighting sensors lowlevel safety lighting can be automatically turned on for when residents or guests get up during the night to go to the bathroom, get a drink of water or investigate a noise.
The ambient level of heating can be controlled throughout the home, or alternatively individual schedules by areas or room can be created for different situations, occupation or time of the year. The heating can be turned on and off using a smartphone and tablet, whether at home or away, and remotelymanaged schedules can be set up for hot water, holidays and frozen pipe protection.
Easily switch internal and external lights on or off from a mobile device in or away from the home. In fact, it is possible to create personal lighting moods and scenarios, or even simulate occupancy while out or on holiday. The discreet sensors are fitted hidden from view behind existing light switches, so there is no need to buy any costly smart bulbs or replace fittings.
SMOKE ALARM LEAK DETECTION
&
An aesthetically pleasing and discreet smoke and temperature monitoring sensor can be placed anywhere in the home. If the amount of smoke is not enough to trigger the alarm it can still detect a rapid change of temperature and generate an alert. Meanwhile, the wireless flood sensor provides total peace of mind for your plumbing and white goods, with advanced warning of even the smallest leak. This clever sensor can reach inaccessible or hard to reach areas, so it is possible to react quickly to a problem.

How To Make A Home Accessible – Without Compromising On Style Accessibility of the home is an important consideration in any building project. A home lift provides an easy and stylish solution for those who struggle with the stairs. Your typical self-build client will invest their heart and soul in their project to realise their dream home, so accessibility should be a major consideration to ensure the lifetime value of the project. Design criteria such as Lifetime Homes are growing in importance, helping to ensure that homes are fit for the less mobile.
Archetech - Page 84
There are many considerations; from access into the house, the layout inside, the width of the hallways and doorways and of course, the stairs.
Finding the right home lift for your client’s needs Incorporating a home lift into the original plans will give your clients the means to future proof their dream home, allowing them to stay put well into retirement and add value to their property. But how do you choose the perfect home lift for your project and your client’s needs? Space is an important consideration, and so is the design of the lift and its safety features. The Terry Lifestyle Home Lift is a space-saving, unobtrusive option which provides first-class safety features. Independently tested and certificated by a Fire Research Centre, the Lifestyle Home Lift provides the same fire integrity the house had before the aperture is cut – whether the lift is parked upstairs or downstairs. Designed and manufactured in Britain to the requirements of BS5900:2012, the Lifestyle Home Lift provides the best of comforts in living and is a design element your customer will be proud of.

British Lighting Manufacturer Original BTC Launches New Collections For SS16 Established in 1990, Original BTC manufactures relaxed, familiar lighting for domestic and contract interiors. Hand-assembled in Oxford from the finest aluminium, chrome and bone china, the essential collection of table, floor, wall and pendant lights is instantly comfortable, unassumingly elegant and accessibly priced. One of the forerunners of industrial style, founder Peter Bowles’ updated classics and original designs are inspired by traditional factory fittings and iconic 1940s design. Four UK production facilities – all owned by Original BTC - are dedicated to constructing the beautifully unprocessed lights. Aluminium shades and bases are handspun from sheet metal in the heart of the country’s metal-working industry, glass shades are mouth-blown in Birmingham while bone china shades and ceiling roses are hand-cast in Stoke-on-Trent.
blown glass pendants marked a new direction for Original BTC. The brand’s first in-house manufactured glass collection, Globe pendants are free-blown at its Birmingham-based glassworks using artisanal techniques first developed in the twelfth century. Capturing Original BTC’s simple elegance and attention to detail, each pendant features a chrome or brass fitting with a matching chrome or brass wire suspension and bulb holder, plus trademark braided cable.
Archetech - Page 88
Quality, detail and mix of materials is key: metallic painted, glass or china shades are paired with polished, satin or chromed bases, offset by matching cotton braided flex. Functional and practical, stems can be raised and lowered and shades angled to create the perfect ambience. Classic ranges include the iconic bone china Hector, available as a table, pendant, wall and floor light. Launched twenty five years ago, the simple yet effective dome-shaped Hector is a British design classic. Further key ranges include the industrial styleTitan pendant, available in polished aluminium and a range of powder-coated colours, as well as the Taskcollection of table, floor, wall and pendant lights. More recently, the Stanley collection of pendants, available in brass, nickel, copper and black nickel, has become one of the brand’s most popular designs. The Globecollection of mouth-
New for 2016 Launched at Maison et Objet this year, Hatton is Original BTC’s largest and most technically challenging collection yet. With the aim of pushing bone china to its very limits, the Hatton collection uses highly skilled, labour-intensive processes to create multi-faceted forms which explore, maximise and celebrate the material’s translucency, luminosity and versatility. “From the designing and making of the mould to the complicated production process of the shades
themselves, we’ve taken bone china to its absolute limit in size and form. It’s a tremendous accomplishment for all involved and we’re proud to show how technically brilliant British manufacturing can be,” says Bowles, recent winner of a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in honour of his international success. Also launched for 2016, the 1960s inspired Walterexudes retro glamour. With a striking combination of brushed satin copper or brass and a choice of anthracite or opal glass, the clean-lined table light features a beautifully integrated on-off switch and twistable dimmer, while the glass shade sits on copper or brass gallery screws, secured to the base with matching copper finials. The new Christie Rise & Fall pendant, hand slip-cast at Original BTC’s Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory, features a moulded, fluted shade which creates hypnotic shadow-play, each organic fold echoing the movement and flow found in nature, from the rise and fall of ocean waves and rolling hills to the gentle corrugation of washed-out shells. The Christie offers perfect solution for combined eating, cooking and entertaining spaces; simply lower to create intimate, atmospheric dining zones and raise for a broad spread of shadow-free task lighting for food preparation and daytime meals. Effortless and elegant, the delicate bone china pendant will soften the clean lines of contemporary kitchens while blending beautifully with more traditional schemes. Repairs, Refurbishment And Water Ingress By The Sea Stuart Hicks, from cold liquid-applied waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, discusses how a change of membrane addressed failing waterproofing at a luxury residential development in Saltdean, near Brighton.
Archetech - Page 90
The Grand Ocean Hotel in Saltdean, near Brighton, epitomises a bygone era of glamourous seaside elegance. First opened in 1938, the Grade II listed building’s crescent-shaped white façade makes it a classic of Art Deco architectural design. Once a popular honeymoon destination owned by Billy Butlin it is now the central building from which a development of luxury apartments takes its name. The scheme has seen the refurbishment of the original structure and construction of four new build blocks designed in keeping with the former hotel.
Problems with the integrity of the waterproofing system that was originally specified for the project became apparent even before the scheme was completed, leading to a change of both roofing contractor and, eventually, roofing system.
The majority of the problems with the roofing material were around the upstands. While repairs using the same membrane seemed to address the issue briefly, the same issues recurred following the repairs. Inverted Refurbishment
Integrity Issues Both the existing hotel building and the new builds have flat roofs and architect, Rolfe Judd, had specified a liquid waterproofing membrane. Unfortunately, the system selected was not robust enough to adhere seamlessly to the roof substrate and the assumption was made that the issue lay with the quality of installation rather than the suitability of the membrane. A new roofing contractor, Cawston Roofing, was brought in to carry out repairs to the membrane but, as the existing roof build up was still under warranty, Cawston Roofing was required to carry out repairs using the same product.
Having used Kemper Systems’ Kemperol membranes on a wide variety of construction projects in the past, Cawston Roofing was confident in recommending Kemperol V210, a cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane. The originally-specified membrane had been installed beneath the insulation as an inverted roof build up for the new apartment blocks. Cawston Roofing removed the paving slabs and green roof medium along with the insulation and, where possible, this was stored for re-use.
The company then prepared and cleaned the roof surface and, in the areas around the upstands where the failed membrane had not bonded, the team pulled off the damaged membrane.
New insulation had to be cut to size and shape and this was done while the Kemperol V210 membrane was being installed so that the balconies could be completed as quickly as possible.
The existing insulation, slabs and green roof medium were then reinstated to complete the roof.
The team then moved onto the 8,500m2 former hotel roof, which comprises five ‘fingers’ with a central core.
Hotel Roof
Water ingress around the roof outlets meant that the recently installed warm roof insulation was already sodden and the roof had to be stripped back to the vapour barrier.
The damage caused by the failed waterproofing membrane on the roof and balconies of the former hotel building was even more significant because the original roof build-up was not inverted.
Having completed the strip out, Cawston Roofing allowed the concrete substrate to dry on each balcony and the decision was taken to reinstate the build-up for each balcony as an inverted warm roof.
When weather conditions did improve, the Kempertherm sections were fixed to the substrate and joint sealed before application of the Kemperol V210 membrane began.
Thanks to the replacement of the originally-specified waterproofing system with Kemperol V210, the building not only provides a stylish address on the coast that is warm and dry for residents but also protects a slice of the UK’s holidaymaking heritage and an iconic listed building.
Page 91 - Archetech
The balconies were tackled first, with strip out of the entire roof build-up. Here, not only had the originally-specified membrane failed, but the insulation below it had begun to rot too.
To aid water run-off in the future, Kemper System designed a tapered Kempertherm insulation scheme, introducing a slight pitch to each section of roof. Cawston Roofing pre-primed each piece of board in an on-site workshop during the winter months to aid faster installation once the weather improved.

Lining Systems The importance of Fabrication By R D Mantle FIoR Managing Director of Ampteam Limited Sometimes a spark of clarity will result in a “eureka” or “light bulb” moment and an idea will evolve into a unique product. I don’t know how many people get such moments but it is certainly not uncommon as it is one of the things that makes us Human, our inventiveness! Such was the case many years ago when the idea for the Unifold® hinge was born, only I called it my “beer mat” moment, because at the time I was bending a beer mat and you can probably guess where I was when I was doing it! Since those early days of trials, tests, disappointments and triumphs, Unifold® has become a complete system and this has been achieved through an evolutionary process more by necessity than design, most often encountering a problem on site and returning to the factory and solving it in the workshop, employing fabrication techniques and whatever tests were necessary to prove the solution. Most of the fabricated components which are vital to the Unifold® system were designed in the early years of product development and we had many “light bulb” moments in that process along the way, such as the patented Clip Joint used for difficult and narrow applications. We learned the use of our hinge principle in so many ways to aid the fabrication process and to produce components which would be impossible any other way. From the outset this produced fabricated components fit for purpose and of exemplary quality.
We also realised early on that site working inside a gutter cavity could often be very difficult and to expect site operatives to “cut and carve” and then effectively seal a lining system was too much to ask, so our intention was and has been throughout for us to provide all fabrication, factory manufactured with simple gutter joints so the installation is constant and repetitive and as easy as we can make it. We became a “single product company” concentrating on providing product and service excellence. The system has proven to be entirely versatile with the ability to correctly line almost any existing system whether it is a level gutter or laid to falls. Some of our fabricated components are corners, tees, side boxes, sumps and expansion joints and these are just a few! In fact there are solutions for any circumstances however difficult or complex. For quite some time now we have insisted that anyone who installs Unifold must be trained to install the system. This is to ensure conformity and continuity of the system quality on site. This supports our 25 year comprehensive guarantee that includes the installation as well as quality of materials and manufacture. An industry first in gutter lining applications. It is also without doubt that Unifold® is a technical product which the following photographs clearly demonstrate.
This first photograph shows part of a fabrication that was probably one of our most complex and certainly one of our largest.
This is a two piece corner detail with an intruding pier section.
And this is the complete fabrication in situ, 18 pieces in total! And five gutters entering a single space! Not easy, and not a common occurrence, but if you are going to “set your stall” to line gutters then the ability to cope with such circumstances is elemental and vital. This photograph shows a sump unit with two coned outlets and demonstrating that each end is a gutter section for ease of installation. Can you imagine attempting the manufacture of this on site?
The message is clear, any lining system must be able to cope with whatever the site conditions dictate and if a 25 year guarantee is offered then this must warranty that the system is going to work, without leaking, for that period of time and beyond. Our quality and fabrication expertise means we are content with our promises. www.gutterliners.com
It takes a long time to create perfection.
Once in a while a product comes along and changes everything, from the way it’s crafted to the way it works. Products are often copied and many are great ideas that never really see true success in their application. Many years are spent searching for a product that will ultimately surpass expectations, stand the test of time and become recognised as the leader in its field. We created one of those successful products nearly two decades ago and still today it has never been equalled. Why? Because we have never compromised on quality.

SIKA PROVIDES TOTAL CORROSION MANAGEMENT AT £12.9M FOUR SQUARES RESTORATION required to safeguard the refurbishment and repair of any reinforced concrete structure – whether it’s for an entire building or a specific problem area.
Over the past four years, Southwark Council has invested £326 million into ensuring every one of its homes is warm, dry and safe (WDS) by 2016. At the Four Squares Estate in Bermondsey, South London, Sika has supplied a Total Corrosion Management solution – including over 60,000m2 of Sika Ferrogard 903+ corrosion inhibitor – during the £12.9 million regeneration of four housing blocks providing homes to almost 700 families.
Sika is the global leader in concrete repair and protection, corrosion inhibition and structural strengthening systems. Bringing together these combined resources from a single source supplier, all of Sika‘s Total Corrosion Management solutions are supported with the expert guidance
Page 99 - Archetech
Built between 1971 and 1975, the Four Squares Estate features 691 homes across four near-identical seven-storey blocks – New Place Square, Lockwood Square, Marden Square and Layard Square. Following a structural inspection by consulting engineers Arup, all Four Squares housing blocks were deemed to be structurally sound but large areas of previously uncoated concrete were exhibiting reinforcement corrosion.
Working closely with clients Keepmoat and Southwark Council, specialist contractor Barwin and Sika carried out on-site trials using Sika Ferrogard 903+ to demonstrate its ability to penetrate the concrete, reach the steel and restore it to a state of passivity. With the tests showing the system successfully encapsulated and protected the reinforcement, the corrosion inhibitor was included in Sika’s comprehensive Total Corrosion Management specification that also comprised repair mortars and protective coatings.
Suitable for a wide range of concrete repair applications from bridges to social housing, car parks to commercial buildings, all products are backed up by a highly experienced technical team who offer expert specification advice and support. With a comprehensive range of repair solutions, Sika has helped to restore all Four Squares Estate buildings to make them warm, dry and safe for many years to come.

Colourful Cladding For The STM
We finally can admire the new STM Stinson Transport Centre located in Montreal’s St-Laurent district. The Centre’s design project was given to Lemay, an architectural firm whose objective was to integrate this new building in its residential surroundings without raising both visual and air pollution. Ceragres collaborated with the architects to find the best exterior cladding for the building that accommodates 300 buses and up to 800 STM employees.
A Colourful Footbridge The building is easily recognizable by its long bright yellow footbridge, a colour that is true to the STM identity. Dedicated to the company’s administration offices, this footbridge is covered in ceramic ventilated cladding, an innovative product distributed by Ceragres. The infinite colour range was a very important first argument for the architectural firm, which worked very hard to make the building appealing and distinctive.
The ceramic panels are offered in more than 150 colours that will never be subject to discolouration and will keep their brightness even when in direct contact with UV rays. Durable Brightness In addition to offering a vast colour selection, ceramic ventilated cladding is known for its durability and versatility. In fact, one of the most important factors to consider is a building’s resistance to climate variations.
Architects: Lemay Exterior cladding: Ceragres Photo credits: StĂŠphane Groleau www.ceragres.ca/en/ www.lemayonline.com/en/
Dirt does not stick to the cladding, so it can be easily cleaned with water. Therefore, rain works as a natural cleaner, allowing owners to significantly save on energy and maintenance costs.
An Environmentally Friendly Cladding The use of ventilated cladding for a transport centre is even more interesting when the material contributes to the improvement of surrounding air quality. When exposed to light, a catalyst featured in the enamel gets activated and cleans the surrounding air. Polluting molecules such as nitrous oxide emanating from the buses naturally deposit on the ceramic surface.
Activated by sunlight, the catalyst uses surrounding oxygen to transform these polluting elements into harmless components such as mineral salts, which will then be released into the air. This is the result of HT Technology, technology that cleans and deodorizes air simultaneously. This action is the equivalent of planting trees around the building. The Stinson Transport Centre received LEED Gold certification for its contribution to the highest standards of sustainability.
Page 101 - Archetech
The manufacturing and elements of ceramic cladding make it perfectly suited for harsh Quebec winters. The ceramic panels used for the exterior cladding go through a hydrophilic treatment that provides surprising self-cleaning and antibacterial properties.

From the Met Office to the Governor of the Bank of England, we are constantly being warned about the potential consequences of Climate Change and the risk of more frequent extreme weather events but are offered few lasting solutions other than “cutting carbon emissions” – which is why Dallmer has introduced its high capacity ‘Red’ Drain. The unit’s red colour identifies it as a separate system from the conventional flat roof drainage and is intended to provide overflow when the main outlets are being overwhelmed. Crucially, the versatile design can be connected to chutes or to pipework in gravity or siphonic systems. This clears excess storm-water quickly before it can find vulnerable joints (typically where the waterproofing meets upstands) or exert excess structural loads.

With less than 400 PassivHaus certified properties so far completed across the UK, the ultra-low energy standard from Germany can still be viewed as nascent in this country, though there are many compliant components and technologies available to assist in these designs. The highly efficient Passive house certified CA550 heat recover unit (HRU) has in fact just been installed as a crucial element to the building services within a private residential property under construction near Tiverton in Devon. 30 TONNES OF WEIGHT REMOVED FROM HISTORIC FOOTBRIDGE IN RESTORATION PROJECT The life of an historic footbridge in Bristol has been extended after a repair and restoration project removed 30 tonnes of weight. Bristol City Council appointed anti-slip flooring company Polydeck to provide the solution for St Anne’s pedestrian footbridge that crosses the River Avon. A routine inspection showed that the steel structure was showing signs of corrosion and the bridge was in need of significant repair. The council decided that to reduce the self-weight and prolong the life of the bridge, the decks of the main span and access ramps should be converted from reinforced concrete to a lighter weight and longer lasting Glass Reinforced Polyester construction. In the past, glazed doors required addon features such as heavy curtains or pleated screens to ensure homeowners could live comfortably. But now they can control sunlight, insects and privacy with screens and shades that are built into the doorjamb. These screens and shades retract out of sight when not in use so the original design intent of the space is assured.
Knife safety is thrown into sharp relief with the retractable safety knife, cord and karabiner from leading physical security product supplier, Securikey. Ideal for warehouse and distribution centre use, the 90cm cord and karabiner fixing allows for hands-free work whilst still keeping the knife within easy reach, making it one of the most reliable and convenient safety tools on the market.

Gaia heats Hektor’s house… or rather his barn
PENDOCK’S COLUMNS TAKE OFF AT THE O2
Fermacell flags up its flooring credentials
When somebody books a beautiful historic timber-framed barn as a wedding venue, they want to see the mellow oak beams in their natural glory; they do not want to see unsightly steel radiators bolted to them. That is why landowner and developer, Hektor Rous, chose Gaia’s wet underfloor heating system in the renovation of the Grade II listed barn at the family seat, Henham Park, in Suffolk.
The Hub, which was formed in 2005 as a Specialist Fit-out Contractor to the Museums & Heritage Sector and has since built an enviable reputation within the industry, has specified decorative column casings from Pendock for its latest project carried out in Greenwich’s most prominent landmark.
A new brochure on its range of flooring systems has been published by Fermacell.
The Rous family has lived at Henham Park since the 16th Century and, when Hektor took over the daunting task of running the estate in 2004, he set about making the park and its various buildings earn their keep. Events such as the Grand Henham Steam Rally and the first-ever Latitude Festival, soon started bringing in sorely-needed funds. W: www.gaia.co.uk
Virgin Atlantic Airways and Delta Air Lines, the official airline partners of The O2, launched the glamorous NY-LON Lounge Bar during the summer: having the capacity for up to 300 guests within the Turbine Lounge - a large bar and seating area - while an additional “Secret Meeting room” can cater for meetings, private dining or other events in an intimate setting. Open up shopping spaces with sliding and stacking walls from D R Services
INTERFLOOR’S REVAMPED GRIPPERRODS RANGE IS BEST OF BRITISH
RED SOURCE
OPPOSITES ATTRACT: ALNOATTRACT - A KITCHEN FOR THE FUTURE
Within covered shopping arcades, the specification of moveable glazed walls for shop fronts is a highly practical solution. They open up the retail space so that there is no obvious boundary between inside and outside, while also maximising floor space and removing dead areas. There is a wide choice of styles, shapes and colours available as well as automatic systems to cope with installations where manual handling is not an option. For architects and designers, there are no hindrances at all regarding style – the only major constraint that might be faced with moveable walls is whether or not they will physically fit within the confines of the building.
Leading flooring manufacturer Interfloor has revamped its Gripperrods® carpet gripper range to give retailers a highly competitively priced Britishmade quality product that stands out from the competition.

Bond Bryan’s Vision Of Factory 2050 Becomes Reality
Factory 2050, also dubbed the reconfigurable factory, reached its completion this month.
Archetech - Page 112
Around half a mile from the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Factory 2050 is the first project on the planned 50 acre University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Campus 2 at Sheffield Business Park, and will be the UK’s first fully reconfigurable assembly and component manufacturing facility for collaborative research, capable of rapidly switching production between different high-value components and one-off parts.
Bond Bryan Architects have long become industry experts in designing and delivering Advanced Manufacturing Research Centres nationally, so when the firm won this project in summer 2013 the brief and dream was to design a circular factory; a concept first created for the AMRC in 2005, but not achievable at that time due to budget and programme restraints. Bond Bryan proved that re-configurability and flexibility do not need to rely on traditional building form and layout. This project creatively demonstrates how form is no longer an inhibitor to functionality of an advanced manufacturing environment. Principal designer and Director at Bond Bryan, Darren Southgate commented: ”This is a special moment for me personally seeing a visionary building developed in my mind’s eye over ten years now become a reality. The idea of linking the core visually, without walls and being part of the ‘workspace donut’ were always leading design principles. It is a human need to be associated or close to activities that link thinking and doing; the days of disappearing into cellular offices away from the production environment have been replaced by
hands on doing and reporting; them and us is no longer. The need for quiet space hasn’t gone but it is shared through multifunctional collaborative spaces.” With its fully glazed elevations and circular plan the building features a core of open plan working, meeting rooms, lifts and stairs at its heart.Clever design elements include single staircase access from the core accommodation with under-workshop floor tunnel egress, removing the need for an awkward second staircase and providing 100% uninterrupted research floor space. The mechanical and electrical installation is centralised in the core with perimetertrenched services to get vital air, water,
power and data to machines. Carefully co-ordinated services around the building and mostly hidden from view under covers, mean the space will feel uncluttered, a design prerequisite. The 360 degree, eight metre high glazed external elevation is free spanning from ground to roof using a Schuco steel curtain walling system. Using 3m by 1m glazed modules the façade develops a module predominately with a horizontal quality. The brise soleil around the top one third of the glazing to reduce highlevel glare and overheating; a system of circular profiles run perfectly around the perimeter supported off the curtain walling. Out board of the main façade is a unique ‘V’ system of circular tubes to brace the principle structure in a very expressionistic way.
Page 113 - Archetech
Andrew Fallon, Head of Estates Development at the University of Sheffield, said of Bond Bryan Architects, “I was very impressed with their emphasis on aesthetics as well as sustainability with a design which meets the project brief but which also, in the spirit of excellence, exceeds my expectations.”
