LOST IN IMMERSION RESTORING THE COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE FALL 2014 - SPRING 2015
The early theatres of the 1920s established a relationship between the audience, actor and screen. As time progressed audience members desired a more immersive and interactive experience with the actors and the screen. Methods such as 3D glasses began to pull actors from the screen and closer to the audience. Imax theatres expanded and curved their screens, and raised their seating to provide a closer and more immersive relationship with the actors on the screen. Today screens are located in every home, found in every pocket as audience members have replaced traditional theatres with personal televisions and cellphone devices. What was once considered a collective social experience of attending the theatre has eventually been replaced by the individuals desire to be entirely immersed in another dimension. Devices like the Oculus Rift create a virtual environment where audience becomes actor in an entirely individual experience void of any social interaction.

The Academy ratio is an aspect ratio of a frame of 35mm film when used with 4-perf pulldown. In 1932 It was declared the standard film aspect ration was standardized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Cinerama’s aspect ratio of 2.77 was acheived by simultaneously projecting images from three scyncronized 35mm projectors onto a deeply curved 146 degree screen.
Cinemascope achieved its widescreen aspect ratio through the use of an anamorphic lense. An anamorpic lens can film a widescreen image on a standard 35mm film. When the film is projected it is stretched out resulting in a widescreen format.
Vistavison was not as wide as previous aspect ratios, however the quality did improve. Paramount decided to turn the 35mm film sideways in order to film more than four perforations high. Instead, Vistavision was filmed at eight perforations long.
The standard 35 mm film was replaced with a larger 65mm film and Super Panovion used used spherical lenses to create a final aspect ratio of 2.20.
MGM 65 cameras used anamorphic camera lenses to compress the image 1.25 times and as a result produced an extremely wide aspect ratio. This method eventually replaced the Cinerama’s method of three syncronized projectors.

Isolation
The collective social experience can be restored while still being immersive through relationships established by the early theatres. By recording and projecting active audience members on a delay you can establish a relationship where the roles of actor and audience become interchangeable. By extending the delay of the recording you begin to incorporate other audience members and actors that inhabit that space at different times. Audience and actors become voyeur and exhibitioner depending on whether they interact with the actors on the screen. By setting up multiple cameras set at different time delays you begin to include more actors and increase the collective experience. What was once considered a method of control, this experience of surveillance becomes an activity of active participation in which a social experience is restored.

MOTT HAVEN CONCEPT PLAN FOR MOTT HAVEN, BRONX, NEW YORK SPRING 2014
“This report is the result of the fourth in a series of design studios held at the University of Michigan’s A. Alfred Taubman Collegeof Architecture and Urban Planning (TCAUP) focused on New York City Public Housing Authority (NYCHA) projects and their neighborhoods. Prior studios looked at NYCHA properties in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Astoria in Queens and Brooklyn’s Brownsville. The studio presented here makes proposals for Mott Haven, the Bronx, location of several NYCHA campuses. Like its predecessors it is exploratory rather than definitive, presenting ideas for discussion by NYCHA and its residents as well as the larger Mott Haven community as they plan for the future.” - Roy Strickland STUDENTS INVOLVED: Joe Cernugel Yuva Chang Matthew Joniec Mark Knutson Eldo Mathew Dustin Murphy Carmen Petersen Xutao Wang Jaclyn Zaborski Alexandra Ziemba Jody Zimmer VIEW FULL REPORT: https://issuu.com/jodyzimmer4/docs/motthaven_-_university_of_ michigan

Community Buildings Community building programs and sites are scattered in and

VERTICAL UNIVERSITY
Lincoln Hospital is a tremendous asset to the Mott Haven area. Not only does it provide health services and awareness for local residents, but it also provides employment for hundreds of people. The health services provided to the community continue along 148th street towards the Hub. Mott Haven has also become a popular location for satellite campuses like The New College of Rochelle, and the Metropolitan College of New York. Both colleges offer programs in nursing with opportunities to work at the local hospital. Phase one of this project begins with removing a row of parking to allow for a wider boulevard that would connect Lincoln Hospital to St. Mary’s park. A defined bike lane will allow commuters to travel back and forth from home to school, as well as easy access to public transportation. The site adjacent to John Peter Zenger High School provides a great location to inject a vertical university. The building would allow for student services at the ground floors, classrooms and labs above, faculty offices and administration space higher up, and student housing at the top. A plaza located both north and south of the building provides space to gather and allow for a multitude of activities. The space also helps define the notion of a campus environment. Phase two introduces mixed-use housing north of the vertical university. Retail and restaurants located at the base of the building create a safe environment for anyone leaving the hospital at late hours.
