THE NEW FORTUNA THEATRE Leipzig, Germany Culture is a social production. The 1928 structure which housed the Fortuna Cinema was conceived, not by accident, as a representation of both the Classical Temple and the Indwithin society, it is a house for both meaning and making. ustrial Hall. Emblematic of its symbolic function In the 21st century, the traditional relation between audience and actor is blurred. A telephone is a camera; citizens are directors. And yet, theatre has a history and the elements which define the theatre are limited by necessity. However, these elements are ripe for redefinition. What is a stage? Where can a curtain be drawn? When is the act truly over? How can the space of performing arts exceed its conventional limits? Leipzig is a city of rivers and rails: a city formed by convergence. The moving arts are a discipline of choreography. The people are all participants. What brings them together? The renovated Fortuna Theatre will question the framework for participation and performance. The project will define elements, boundaries, stages and their interaction. As well as propose a larger social environment within which the magical moment of ‘Action’ may take on new meaning… The project will be to propose a flexible theatre complex (from classical to experimental theatre productions or ballet) and to focus on new forms of occupancy and transformation of the unused historical building and surrounding left-over plots in conjunction with new spaces for education, culture, work, housing, etc.

History of the building In 1928 the Fortuna opened in the form of a generator building of three years previously disused gasworks for Leipzig east. For a representative effect to the side of the street a powerful stepped gable, art deco facade was added to the bricked left and right facade building. The building was closed for a time and then in 1957 with some renovations and technologies applied, was posible the oppening of the Kino cinema for the youth. The cinema worked for some time but it was closed in I987 and since then, there building have been abandoned.

Slutzky painting analysis “Transparency may be an inherent quality of substance, as in a glass curtain wall; or it may be an inherent quality of organization. One can, for this reason, distinguish between a literal and a phenomenal transparency. In this way, Rowe defines literal transparency as the physical translucence inherent in a material or structure. There is no ambiguity as to the form or that which lies behind the plane of the transparent surface. Conversely, phenomenal transparency exists when a designer deliberately abstracts space, not through the use of overlaying transparent planes, but through the reorganization of multiple spacial grids that would normally define a plane. This painting have different colors, and each color can have a different depness and spacial organization inside this misterious black cube. Also colors are repeated but in different tonalities which in my interpretation can also mean the degradation of the colors affected by the light and depness, for me thats the phenomenal transparency of this painting that was an inspiration for my architectural cocnept.

Concept Projection of the light The main concept of this Project is the projection of the light rasing from the ground to the top of the old facade of the Kino Fortuna as a metaphor of a new beggining that won't forget the old one creating a triangular strong shape with a sloped floor that would allow the visitors to enjoy the building climbing and exploring it through this umpredictable and the same time practical circulation areas. Also the projection of the light gets related to the previous painting analysis. Through the widows the artifitial and natural light give to the Neues Fortuna a spirit, degradating the colors and creating an interesting and unpredictable light show.
