JANUARY 2017 DESIGN PROJECTS

QALAMOUN GARDEN PROJECT

We launched our newest design project, in partnership with LOYAC Lebanon, as part of their international program Homes. A selected team of members will be designing the renovation of the Qalamoun Public Garden, north Lebanon.

GOETHE INSTITUT MEDIA LOUNGE & LIBRARY

For the past 6 months, a team of members has been designing the new media lounge and library at the Goethe Institut in Beirut, as part of the renovation of their new space. The project is currently under execution, where the team is following up on the last touches between production and construction. The new space is scheduled to open to the public in May 2017. The space will serve as a public social and cultural destination at the heart of the busy city in Gemmayze.

BEYOND BEIRUT

VISITING CAIRO, EGYPT Funded by Mideast Creatives Mobility Grant

As part of our international visits, our first visit for 2017 was to Cairo, Egypt. Architects for Change’s Director Abbas Sbeity visited Megawra [the built environment collective]. During the visit, Abbas met with Megawra’s team to learn more about what they do and develop potential ideas for collaborations. The visit ended with a talk about community participation in the design process. In addition, Abbas met various organizations during his stay in Cairo, including the regional representative of Open Architecture aCollaborative in Cairo Hebatuallah Hendawy.

EUROPEAN FORUM SHADOW VISITS EUROPEAN FORUM BY MITOST

As part of the European Forum by MITOST, we welcomed this month two fellows from the program: Cedric Bischetti & Giulia Maci. Cedric Bischetti, is the founder of Makers of Change, based in Strasbourg, France. Giulia Maci is the co-founder of Urbego, the international platform for urban planners, based in Copenhagen. During their visits, both guests had the chance to meet with various local organizations to explore the potential for future collaboration.

During SenseCamp Lebanon, organized by Make Sense, Abbas Sbeity and Cedric Bshetti from Makers for Change, participated in the panel discussion on breakig barrienrs between communities as social entrepreneurs. The other panelists were Sally Hammoud, director of Loyac Lebanon, and Moussa Darwish, co-founder of Multiverse.

In collaboration with Nahnoo, we hosted Giulia Maci from Urbego Copenhagen, during her visit to Beirut. Giulia introduced Urbego’s project approach. She discussed a series of international projects where they have applied the Urbego approach, and reflected on the relevance of the Urbego platform.

BDW2017 THEME LAUNCH: #ISDESIGNANEED?

GUILLAUME CREDOZ TALK & BOOK LAUNCH

Architects for Change members were invited to the Beirut Design Week Theme Launch for the upcoming edition next May. Doreen Toutikian, Director of BDW, launched the theme and the BDW2016 documentary. We are looking to answering this question soon!

Architects for Change members attended the talk and book launch of ‘Efficient Fiction’ by Giullaume Credoz at Sursock Museum. Efficient Fictions presents a synthesis of design strategies linking design, art, and architecture.

KICKING OFF THE 2017 PROGRAMS

As part of our membership program PATH, members get the chance to get involved in organizing, managing, and leading a variety of educational and cultural projects during 2017. 9 teams were formed and started planning for the 2017 programs. and events.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

As part of our membership program PATH, we link our active members to respected design practices and organizations, to provide them with a summer internship opportunity in order to learn and grow in a professional environment. 6 meetings were already held in January.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT INDEX

In partnership with Nahnoo, LOYAC Lebanon, & Urbego, we started the planning for our newest project ‘Youth Engagement Index’, a methodology developed by Urbego, and that will be implemented in Beirut during 2017 to assess the youth participation in the city affairs.

IDEA CAMP MADRID

Part of Discover Lebanon Program Sunday, February 6.

Abbas Sbeity will be visiting Berlin, Germany, from February 12 to 19, for the final phase of the European Forum for Active Citizenship by MITOST.

Abbas Sbeity will be participating in the European Cultural Foundation Idea Camp in Madrid, Spain, from February 28 to March 3.

MEMBERS’ ACHIEVEMENTS KATIA ZAHWI SELECTED TO SHE-ENTREPRENEURS PROGRAM

LARA ABI SABER WON THE SECOND PLACE IN THE LOGI COMPETITION

Founding member and Program Manager Katia Zahwi was selected to take part in the Swedish Institute program ‘She Entrepreneurs’ in Stockholm in April 2017.

JENNYFER HARB & ALINE TASHJIAN SELECTED FOR BDW2017 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

MARC BOU ASSAF & THEODORA SAADE WON 1ST PRIZE IN ESPACE MELANIE FREIHA COMPETITION

Both members Jennyfer Harb & Aline Tashjian were selected to be part of Beirut Design Week 2017 Internship Program.

Both members Marc Bou Assaf & Theodora Saade won the first prize in the Espace Melanie Freiha Competition for their projects.
