Arizona Residential Architects
Ten Reasons to Hire an Architect
1. An Architect can help you create and focus your dream house into a built reality. Architects see the big picture. A skilled architect can help you develop and integrate your list of requirements with the other complex factors to create a unique Arizona home just for you by prioritizing your needs.
2. An Architect is a licensed professional. Architects are educated, trained, and tested in a large range of areas, including aesthetic design, ergonomics, sociology, ecology, law, building codes, construction materials and technology. This breadth of knowledge allows foresight when evaluating competing requirements and restrictions.
3. An Architect will solve your problems with creative, elegant solutions. Architects are trained to make buildings both functional and beautiful. An architect will be able to show you alternatives that you might not have considered possible.
4. An Architect is trained in communication. An architect has experience effectively communicating through written word, drawing, and verbally with the key members of the project including clients, contractors, engineers, and authorities in the manner best suited to the situation.
5. An Architect has experience. Most architects consider architecture a passion more than a vocation. They draw on past experience. They are an integral part of the design/construction community with contacts in all the fields.
6. An Architect can make your life easier! Architects can bring pictorial suggestions to the table and assist in decisions for space planning, materials, and finishes transforming your abstract ideas into a form you can visualize.
7. An Architect is cost effective. A well-conceived, designed, and coordinated project is more economical. Changes made on paper in the design phase are much less expensive than those made during construction.
8. Architecture is a good investment. Great design sells from consumer products to cities. A well designed home has a higher resale value.
9. An Architect can make your building project environmentally friendly. Skilled architects work with the environment to create spaces that are sustainable and comply with ever demanding energy performance requirements.
10. An Architect can guide you through an entire project as your advocate. An architect will be able to assist with every aspect of a project from choosing a site, city permitting, design review board submittals to construction administration. Whether you choose to start a project from the ground up or remodel an existing space, an architect will be able to help the project run smoothly during each stage avoiding disruptive surprises.

ARA COMMUNITY
ARA
Arizona Residential Architects
INVITATION TO LAND OWNERS OR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPERS The Arizona Residential Architects (ARA) is a distinguished organization of 15 leading residential architectural firms who would like to provide resources and design talent to land owners, real estate individuals or firms, builders, or residential developers for the purposes of creating a new community, neighborhood, or unique collection of homes. The ideal candidates would be seeking the assistance of the ARA as a creative design and/or development coordination partner to help facilitate new community or neighborhood planning ideas and initiatives. The ARA would bring the talents and experience of 15 uniquely diverse residential architectural firms to the project’s residential design opportunities. In addition, the ARA has developed a network of over 100 trade partners. This network includes residential builders, interior designers, residential product manufacturers or representatives, and trade service provision companies. All this knowledge, product resources and experience can be brought to benefit an identified project. The goal is to identify an opportunity where a parcel of land is between 2ac up to 15ac, or more, wherein the ARA Community Team can design a new inspiring residential neighborhood community that creates awareness and promotes new lifestyle and environmental initiatives incorporating best practices, including recognized platforms for sustainability, such as LEED, and/or Green building practices. The ideal opportunity would allow all 15 members of the ARA to design homes for this model community.

I’m often asked what an architect does. It’s a mystery for sure. The obvious thing we do is create complex drawings with special tools and big pieces of paper, but before all that, before all the sketches and plans... a good architect listens. Yes, being an architect is about hearing a person’s goals and desires. But, most of the time that’s not enough. It’s not enough just to listen. I’ve found that being an architect, an exceptional architect, is about asking the right questions. Questions that release a person’s hidden dreams and secret desires, questions that lead to personal and unique expressions, whatever they may be. I care about your vision, your dream, and your goals. I listen as much for what’s not being said as what is. My team and I would be proud to help you experience that miraculous feeling of living in the home of your dreams.

The Union of Dwelling and Land Clint Miller’s childhood home was nestled in the hills of Southern California, where large expanses of living room windows framed landscaping, where honest, load-bearing wood beams both supported the home’s structure and adorned its interior. As a youngster, Clint felt a kinship with these simple structures and their textures and proportions, and to the views that revealed the surrounding environment. These early experiences helped shape Clint’s architectural quest to understand the intricate balance required to create a home that forges a natural relationship of dwelling and environment. For more than two decades now, Architect Clint Miller has striven to design homes that form a union with their site ... whether integrating into lush urban communities or growing organically from the surrounding desert flora. Miller’s body of work balances delicate detail and bold composition, melding traditional techniques and materials with sensitive design and application. Each home expresses an organic relationship between site and design; each home respects and embraces its site. Clint’s residential projects have been featured in AIA Home Tours, honored in an AIA Homes of the Year competition, and recognized in an AIA Historical Preservation Exhibit. In March of 2010 he was honored as a Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden magazine and has been featured several times on that publication’s cover.

Kendle Design Collaborative designs homes that speak to your heart and soul, homes that are inspired by the natural beauty of the land, be it forest, waterfront, prairie or desert. We strive to design homes where visual delight awaits around every corner and in every detail, often changing with the passing of the sun or the changing of the seasons. This we believe is living architecture, an ever-changing natural tapestry that celebrates the many joys of living. As an architect, I feel my primary responsibility is to clearly understand my client’s priorities, their values, and aspirations, but most importantly to understand what brings them joy. Then and only then can we carefully craft the design and details of their new home such that it enhances their daily living, bringing them joy in their quietest moments as well as times of celebration. I hope that you will consider us for your next home design. We would be honored to work with you, where together we can design a home that brings you joy.

Brent Kendle WHAT SETS KENDLE DESIGN COLLABORATIVE APART?
In a word AUTHENTICITY. What we practice is Regional Modernism. It’s not a “style”. It’s what we are passionate about, it’s what we believe in, it’s what is in our soul. When you look Tuscan or French Country. It’s not who we are. The homes we design are in harmony with nature; they celebrate their context WHY? Because when you design in this manner you transcend Style, you give the home roots, a reason for being what and where it is – you create timeless living architecture.

Having recovered from the typo anxiety of Issue 13, I continue our ongoing conversation. Jones Studio fully exploits digital technology for the benefit of our buildings and their occupants. The shapes and efficiencies made possible through advanced computer software is unlike any other in the history of construction. Yet, I still draw. I draw because the act of making a slow line brings me joy. I must think about each line and its relationship to every other line. The drawing is the emergence of an idea from blank paper. Once expressed in graphite, color and ink, it becomes part of the universe. Sometimes, I reconsider a line. It can be erased but its history is remembered by its predictable embossed paper impression. I use many kinds of lines... heavy, thick, curved and straight. I use light lines drawn with a pencil point as sharp as the tip of a nail. These lines guide other, more decisive lines. As my hand moves across the paper, I frequently produce the smeared line. These important marks are respected as much as the ones on the front lines of communication. It is a hand drawing... an art quickly disappearing from architects’ studios. Yet, I still draw.

For me, Frank Lloyd Wright is about building timelessly. He taught us how to open livable space into any size your family desires by using nonbearing walls. He also carefully framed views and blended the building with its topography. And, he was sensitive to airflow, sun angles and rain (greywater) flow.
Jon Bernhard, AIA ►
Frank Lloyd Wright became an influence after beginning my career 30 years ago with Vern Swaback. Vern had the rare opportunity to apprentice with Mr. Wright. The influence on Vern from this opportunity has resulted in uncompromised respect and admiration in Mr. Wright and his design principles. Hardly a day goes by in the studio that Mr. Wright’s name isn’t dropped in the context of enhancing design. Subsequently, after three decades, these principles are deeply rooted in Swaback Partners’ culture and in my designs. Because this exposure started early in my career, I imagine the influence is greater than I comprehend. Physical design is only a small part of this influence: open floor plans, regional design characteristics to incorporate natural opportunities. These design features, incorporated by Mr. Wright long ago, are now referred to as new, responsible and “sustainable” design.
4
Beyond physical design, exposure to Mr. Wright’s work, coupled with my design experience - including the opportunity to live in my own creations –– has led to accepting architecture’s significant influence

on one’s well-being. Among Mr. Wright’s quotes, one that I believe represents this design influence is “...[A]rchitecture seeks superior sense of comfort, expressed in organic simplicity.”
Ron Brissette, RA, NCARB ►
There was a bigger-than-life black-and-white photo of Mr. Wright looming over my student desk in the studio at Taliesin West. Needless to say, I felt he was watching. At the Frank Lloyd Wright School there, we learned about the practice of Organic Architecture. Its tenets and principles are as timeless and appropriate today as they were then. Brissette Architects has strived over the years to establish a practice based upon these principles, in which such ideas as honest expression of structure and materials, blurred lines of indoor/outdoor relationships and the use of simple dynamic forms inspired by nature have been key to our practice.

We learned to be holistic in approach where the parts relate to the whole and built environment was subordinate to the nature. These have hopefully stuck and become part of our work. I am a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright and what he did for the world ◄ Mark Candelaria, AIA of architecture, not so much for his style and philosophy but for his ability to make the mainstream appreciate and become aware of the profession and value of good architecture. His personality and flamboyance were widely known, yet his constant work ethic, creativity, and his prolific body of work defined him. Those aspects I fully embrace. I love to work, produce and promote architecture and the value of good design.
6
My favorite Frank Lloyd Wright project and the one that inspires ◄ Andrew Carson III me the most is the Frederick C. Robie House in Chicago, Illinois. Frank Lloyd Wright was a master at scale and proportion, and this house is a great example of how those elements come together to create an amazing space that feels larger than it really is. He also was a master of natural light and maintaining privacy while maximizing the views from the house. These are all principles we use today in my firm and my design philosophy.
7
I grew up in Buffalo, New York, and therefore had an awareness ◄ Dale Gardon, AIA, LEED AP of Frank Lloyd Wright at an early age. I don’t remember how old I was when it was first time I visited the Darwin Martin house, but the organization of the plan and the design of the windows certainly were etched in my brain, and I felt the intense desire to want to create architecture like that.
Gonzales Home Photo: David M. Brown
When I relocated to Arizona in the mid 1980s and saw Taliesin West, it made me feel like I was following the route he took to find such a
8
magnetic place as the Sonoran Desert. I have been at home here ever since and enjoy living and creating in this beautiful place. Our design work has not really tried to emulate his work. We have just revered what he had accomplished in the time period he did. I’ve always liked the way Wright used materials –– sometimes ◄ James Hann, AIA local stone from the site –– and the proportions and massing that characterized his work, particularly his residential projects. He also sited them quite well. For example, if his site was on a ridge or top of a hill, he almost never located the project at the top of the ridge or hill; he would locate it just under the crest to make it “fit in” better with the site.

Frank Lloyd Wright has influenced my practice and my lifestyle in
several ways. My first exposure to him was going to performances in the Gammage Theater at ASU. I was fascinated by the building. It was directly across the street from my father’s office where he was a professor for more than twenty years. My father challenged me to find a surface that did not have some kind of curvature to it. He told me that the building celebrated the circle, and this started my love and fascination with architecture. He used a lot of detail in his work, often very inventive forms inspired by nature. I continually try and provide this level of detail in my own 10
work which I feel separates good architecture from great architecture. I have also always loved his use of decoration apparent in his “textile” concrete block homes. He was also a consultant for the Biltmore Hotel here in Phoenix with the architect, his former employee, Albert Chase McArthur. Although he did not do the building, he was not beneath acting as a design consultant with another architect, which I think is very admirable. My design, the Seguin Home in The Biltmore Mountain Estates, was patterned after the concrete block home that Frank Lloyd Wright Designed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for Richard Lloyd Jones. It was also inspired by the Biltmore Hotel that Wright consulted on in the
11
mid-1920s. The home’s copper roof mimics the hotel’s, and the concrete block is present in its raw natural state on the interior and exterior.
Jessica Hutchison-Rough, AIA, LEED AP ►
Even though I grew up with an architect as a father (Lee) and just down the street from Taliesin West, I cannot exactly remember the first time I heard about Frank Lloyd Wright or experienced one of his buildings. He was just always there. His lessons about scale, proportion and entry experience were in the background of my built environment. I do, however, remember the first time I was awed by a Frank Lloyd Wright building. I was 10 and on a family reunion trip in Ohio. Fallingwater was half day in a car away, so my dad and I packed up and took off before the sun, or anyone else, was up. My first impression at that young age was it was like living in a tree
12
house, one with nature for all the good and bad.
ARA14 121
Frank Lloyd Wright (cont.) Wright’s integration of site and structure, as I experienced at Fallingwater, was unparalleled. One of his quotes that sticks with me is “I believe in God, only I spell it Nature.” He had great respect

for the natural environment and its forces. My dad has also instilled this in me, about architecture and life in general. In the formative years of my late 1960s architectural education, ◄ Eddie Jones, AIA there was an unspoken, academic expectation to choose between one of the three 20th-century titans: Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe or Le Corbusier. My choice was easy. Through books and the drawings, Wright had been speaking to me loud and clear since boyhood. His lessons in composition, natural materials, site planning and exploration of form have never left me. He is one of the few heroes whose architecture can still bring me to tears. Inevitably, I grew beyond the infatuation and opened my mind to endless possibility as evidenced by current Jones Studio examples spanning a widening spectrum of architectural response and theory.
13
Fortunately, I learned quickly all the great and not-so-famous architects have important things to say. The common denominator shared by my heroes is an unrelenting stand for a personal ideal. My introduction to Frank Lloyd Wright was around age 10 in ◄ Brent Kendle AIA, LEED AP Chicago, when my mother showed me a book she had in college, Frank Lloyd Wright, An American Architecture by Edgar Kaufmann. The original copy that inspired me to become an architect, purchased by her in the 1940s or 50s, is torn and tattered from my years of early use. Probably what really inspired me, what spoke so clearly to me as
14
soon as I opened the book, was that Nature (which Wright always capitalized) was the underlying law: the root or form, engineering, the spirit of his architecture. That summer, and many summers following, I spent countless hours designing buildings, bridges, homes and anything else that inspired me, sitting in our living room using several reams of paper my father brought home from the office. Later, I graduated to my mother’s design studio using an actual drafting table to draw up my fantasy designs and eventually helping her with some of her presentation drawings.

I shared my mother’s enthusiasm for architecture, and we spent weekends driving and touring every Wright structure we could find. The memory of my first time touring his home and studio in Oak Park still gives me chills. Entering through a low, compressed entryway, as was one of his signature moves, I was overcome by emotion, feeling
“Nature was the underlying law: the root or form, engineering, the spirit of his architecture.” - Brent Kendle AIA
like I was in God’s house, or at least an architectural God to me. I still feel the same way upon entering any of his designs. That emotional power, that ability to impact one’s senses, actually impact and change one’s life for the better, simply by the genius manipulation of space, form, materials and light, is what still drives me today.
Clint Miller, AIA ►
I have long been enamored with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. I especially love the long and low, stretched Usonian homes. The form usually consists of a narrow long rectangle with a smaller overlapping rectangle turned in the opposite direction. This overlapping form incorporates a set of clerestory windows which provides a subtle vertical emphasis. This form is ideal for hillside applications. I recently employed this form for a project in DC Ranch. The home is on a hill rising above a golf fairway and connected with its native landscape. The narrow form follows the hillsides contours. This arrangement requires the least amount of cut into the hill for the home’s footprint and makes the height of retaining walls more manageable. The end result is a home well connected to its site,
16

forming a natural union of home and landscape. Cantilevers! When I first looked at photos of Fallingwater, I was amazed at how Wright cantilevered the balconies and roof of this iconic home. When you take into consideration when the home was conceived and how it was sited, well, it’s an incredible and ambitious endeavor. Let alone how fast Wright designed the home. I interned at a firm in Northern California and I frequently visited the Marin County Civic Center to submit plans and was amazed at how Wright used sunlight to filter into almost every space. I always looked forward to visiting that building; I would find a new detail every visit. I think the Robie house is his best example of the Prairie Architecture. I would recommend a tour of this home to everyone.
17
ARA14 123
Frank Lloyd Wright (cont.) Frank Lloyd Wright, over any other architect, has influenced my ◄ Nick Tsontakis, AIA, NCARB, MRAIC work and love for architecture. As a first-year architecture student, I read everything about him that I could get my hands on. I couldn’t wait for the summer break to visit his projects in the Midwest. In July of 1975, I spent 25 days along with two of my classmates visiting and photographing Wright’s buildings in 11 states. We developed and printed over 2,000 images! Most of his homes at that time were still in original condition except for the Thomas House in Oak Park, Illinois, which was undergoing restoration. We even took a two-day detour to visit Fallingwater.
18
I like the boldness, the open layouts, extreme cantilevers, integration of buildings to their sites, view-oriented designs, intricate detailing and use of materials. This “Victorian” architect was strong enough to reinvent himself even in his later years. It seemed that he never slowed down, and that’s one of his most admirable qualities. He moved forward and continued creating until the end.
“It seemed that he never slowed down, and that’s one of his most admirable qualities. He moved forward and continued creating until the end.” - Nick Tsontakis AIA, NCARB, MRAIC
Ah, Fallingwater! FLW grabbed my attention early on in my ◄ Christy Wareing, AIA architectural studies with this design. Who would think simple rectangular boxes cascading down a complex site could so amazingly portray a Japanese-inspired water fountain and be a house at the same time? FLW’s notion of organic architecture is ironically best expressed with this work. I mean, rectangular boxes do not exactly conjure up the image of organic, yet, in this work, they connect the interior spaces with the outside, open up the light and view, fit into the form of the site without overpowering it: all principles of his organic theory. I feel as though FLW truly outdid himself with that one. His inspiring use of concrete and glass, simple materials expressed with simple forms, inspire me to keep my designs classic and original. To this day, that project is still relevant;

if created yesterday, it would still be just as awe-inspiring. As a child, I was fortunate enough to live near one of Mr. Wright’s ◄ Craig Wickersham, AIA homes in California, the Della Walker House in Carmel by the Sea. This inspired me to read about him and to read his books. Going further, I was accepted by Mrs. Wright and attended school at Taliesin West until her death. Frank Lloyd Wright has inspired so many architects, designers, artists and writers. He is definitely one of America’s great geniuses.

Victor Sidy, AIA LEED AP ►
For me, Wright’s work can be viewed on several levels. At the surface, it is easy to be seduced by the rich geometric patterns of his early work, the monumental massing of his mid-career projects or the streamlined hovering roofs of his late career. More deeply, one can understand his work as serving as a rhetorical device to communicate his ideas about a number of themes, including the balance between man and the nature, our human relationship with advancing technology and the importance of an American culture free of European shackles.

“At the core, [Frank Lloyd Wright’s] work is a search of an architecture that uplifts the human spirit.” - Victor Sidy AIA, LEED AP In his significant projects, he explores these themes in stone, concrete, steel, wood, glass and other materials. And he composes these materials in dramatically contrasting ways: heavy desert masonry and light canvas roofs at Taliesin West, the rough stone and smooth plaster at Fallingwater, brick and glass in the Johnson Wax Administration building. He asks of himself and his students to “eliminate the insignificant,” an exercise that, particularly in his later work, stripped away decoration and encouraged the activity within the building to organize its form. The Guggenheim Museum can be understood in this way. Wright’s own struggle against bureaucratic ways and stultifying traditions is part of his personal story. To me as an architect, I’m equally fascinated by his attempts to defy the forces of gravity, water,
sun,
and
time
through

with

technological advances (electric lighting, plate glass, reinforced concrete, mass production techniques and plastics, for example). At the core, however, his work is a search of an architecture that uplifts the human spirit: an architecture that humanizes its environment, surrounds us with joy and makes us aware of the remarkable place and time we inhabit.

The Garden House
1st Prize - $5000
Dash Bernhard - ASU, 4th Year
ARA Student Housing Competition
When first getting into the design of the house, I began arranging the various floor plan elements around by making a bubble diagram. One of the first things I noticed about the lot was that the east border was faced with a rather un-favorable view of a CMU wall, which rooms along side it would have to look straight at. My solution to this was to design the house around this wall to create a sort of courtyard, which would house a garden, screening views of the wall while also creating a pleasant and more secluded outdoor area for residents to retreat to.

The Garden House
Dash Bernhard - ASU, 4th Year
ARA Student Housing Competition
As this house was based around a young couple looking to grow their family, I felt this garden area would be an alternative place for children to play outdoors, should the street and front yard seem less safe. I felt that a strong engagement with the street should be established, which is why the more public areas of the house (i.e. living room, kitchen, dining room) were placed along the street. This also encourages a Jane Jacobs approach toward having eyes on the street to reap it’s numerous benefits. This left the more “secluded” rooms (i.e. bedrooms, bathrooms)to border the garden, which still offered pleasant views as well as more privacy.

Garfield Bungalow
2nd Prize - $3000
Zechariah Fung - U of A, 4th Year
ARA Student Housing Competition
The Garfield Bungalow was designed for a young couple looking to start their family. The lot is a Southwest facing corner lot on the intersection of Pierce St. and 9th St in the Garfield Historic District. The site provides an excellent view of the Phoenix skyline yet a demanding heat load. The neighborhood is home to few of the remaining pre-suburb era bungalows. This home’s roof borrows its form from the bungalow. Also, acacommodating change was central to the design. The house is a blank canvas, large wooden CLT trusses with metal brackets provide an opportunity for expansion and inversion. Other features continue along this theme: sliding

The project is designed to create a sense of modern serenity and tranquility all while based in the rich historical south-western architecture that is local to the area. The house, while relatively small, is designed to feel much larger. The linear positioning creates sightlines that allows you to see right through from one end of the project to the other. The nano walls along the eastern wall open the house into the quiet courtyard creating a hybrid of outdoor and indoor, space. The guest house and the master bedroom have a part of the courtyard that can be sectioned off for privacy. The long window spans have movable wood slat shadings creating shade where it is needed and adding articulation along the glass wall. There is no front door, the whole east side of the main house is the entrance; you are welcomed not through a narrow passage way but embraced by the whole entity.

PERFECTLY TAILORED DESIGN FOR YOUR BESPOKE LIFESTYLE
Q:
How do you, as a designer, incorporate both bespoke and eco-friendly elements into your interiors for discerning homeowners?
TANYA SHIVELY, ASID, LEED AP
A:
I utilize local craftsmen and sustainable products to create stylish spaces that suit clients’ lifestyles. Each person's unique vision for their home is brought into reality through careful consideration for custom design and pieces crafted by the hands of the area’s talented artisans using responsible materials. This home office in Desert Mountain was designed for a woman who loves the quiet sanctuary it provides. The soothing grasscloth wallpaper adds a colorful texture and natural vibe to the room. The custom cabinets and desk designed by Sesshu Design were constructed locally. For a COMPLIMENTARY copy of my book “How to Avoid Interior Design Nightmares,” please visit sesshudesign.com/ARAbook

BRISSETTE ARCHITECTS Ron Brissette RA, NCARB, Partner Jeff Kamtz, Partner 10229 North Scottsdale Road, Suite F Scottsdale, Arizona 85253 ron@brissettearchitects.com www.brissettearchitects.com 480.596.3882
Ron Brissette was an English Literature major at the University of Connecticut who spent most of his time in the scene shop at the school theater. After college he spent a few years in the professional theater as a technical director, scene and lighting designer. It was a great experience where a passion for design and technical excellence were born, but there had to be something else of permanence where culture, function, and physical environment could come together in an artful way. It had to be Architecture. At 27 he entered the Frank Lloyd Wright School. There he met Jeff, who later after some 15 years of separate career paths, would become his partner. Jeff came from a family construction background starting at a young age working during school breaks and summers. He developed a passion for art and drawing and a desire to study architecture. At 18 entered the Frank Lloyd Wright School. The rest is history with a portfolio of great clients and signature projects realized in many styles and places. A distinguishing feature is their commitment to remaining small and giving principal attention to all aspects of a project. This gives their clients the highest level of personal service and professionalism with the goal of providing unique and practical results for them at every turn of the process.
