Ten Reasons to Hire an Architect

1. An Architect can help you create and focus your dream house into a built reality. Architects see the big picture. A skilled architect can help you develop and integrate your list of requirements with the other complex factors to create a unique Arizona home just for you by prioritizing your needs.

2. An Architect is a licensed professional. Architects are educated, trained, and tested in a large range of areas, including aesthetic design, ergonomics, sociology, ecology, law, building codes, construction materials and technology. This breadth of knowledge allows foresight when evaluating competing requirements and restrictions.

3. An Architect will solve your problems with creative, elegant solutions. Architects are trained to make buildings both functional and beautiful. An architect will be able to show you alternatives that you might not have considered possible.

4. An Architect is trained in communication. An architect has experience effectively communicating through written word, drawing, and verbally with the key members of the project including clients, contractors, engineers, and authorities in the manner best suited to the situation.

5. An Architect has experience. Most architects consider architecture a passion more than a vocation. They draw on past experience. They are an integral part of the design/construction community with contacts in all the fields.

6. An Architect can make your life easier! Architects can bring pictorial suggestions to the table and assist in decisions for space planning, materials, and finishes transforming your abstract ideas into a form you can visualize.

7. An Architect is cost effective. A well-conceived, designed, and coordinated project is more economical. Changes made on paper in the design phase are much less expensive than those made during construction.

8. Architecture is a good investment. Great design sells from consumer products to cities. A well designed home has a higher resale value.

9. An Architect can make your building project environmentally friendly. Skilled architects work with the environment to create spaces that are sustainable and comply with ever demanding energy performance requirements.

10. An Architect can guide you through an entire project as your advocate. An architect will be able to assist with every aspect of a project from choosing a site, city permitting, design review board submittals to construction administration. Whether you choose to start a project from the ground up or remodel an existing space, an architect will be able to help the project run smoothly during each stage avoiding disruptive surprises.

ARA COMMUNITY

ARA

Arizona Residential Architects

INVITATION TO LAND OWNERS OR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPERS The Arizona Residential Architects (ARA) is a distinguished organization of 15 leading residential architectural firms who would like to provide resources and design talent to land owners, real estate individuals or firms, builders, or residential developers for the purposes of creating a new community, neighborhood, or unique collection of homes. The ideal candidates would be seeking the assistance of the ARA as a creative design and/or development coordination partner to help facilitate new community or neighborhood planning ideas and initiatives. The ARA would bring the talents and experience of 15 uniquely diverse residential architectural firms to the project’s residential design opportunities. In addition, the ARA has developed a network of over 100 trade partners. This network includes residential builders, interior designers, residential product manufacturers or representatives, and trade service provision companies. All this knowledge, product resources and experience can be brought to benefit an identified project. The goal is to identify an opportunity where a parcel of land is between 2ac up to 15ac, or more, wherein the ARA Community Team can design a new inspiring residential neighborhood community that creates awareness and promotes new lifestyle and environmental initiatives incorporating best practices, including recognized platforms for sustainability, such as LEED, and/or Green building practices. The ideal opportunity would allow all 15 members of the ARA to design homes for this model community.

Contact Dale Gardon at (480) 948-9666 to make an appointment to meet with the ARA Community Design Team to discuss your potential opportunity.

BRISSETTE ARCHITECTS Ron Brissette RA, NCARB, Partner Jeff Kamtz, Partner 10229 North Scottsdale Road, Suite F Scottsdale, Arizona 85253 ron@brissettearchitects.com www.brissettearchitects.com 480.596.3882

Ron Brissette was an English Literature major at the University of Connecticut who spent most of his time in the scene shop at the school theater. After college he spent a few years in the professional theater as a technical director, scene and lighting designer. It was a great experience where a passion for design and technical excellence were born, but there had to be something else of permanence where culture, function, and physical environment could come together in an artful way. It had to be Architecture. At 27 he entered the Frank Lloyd Wright School. There he met Jeff, who later after some 15 years of separate career paths, would become his partner. Jeff came from a family construction background starting at a young age working during school breaks and summers. He developed a passion for art and drawing and a desire to study architecture. At 18 entered the Frank Lloyd Wright School. The rest is history with a portfolio of great clients and signature projects realized in many styles and places. A distinguishing feature is their commitment to remaining small and giving principal attention to all aspects of a project. This gives their clients the highest level of personal service and professionalism with the goal of providing unique and practical results for them at every turn of the process.

Candelaria Design With more than 30 years of experience in custom residential architecture, both new build and renovations, as well as boutique commercial projects, Candelaria Design takes inspiring living to a whole new level. Through their creative ideas and thoughtful designs, Candelaria Design, and the man who started it all, Mark Candelaria, AIA, are truly an inspiration to clients and industry peers alike. Mark formed Candelaria Design Associates in 1999 with the belief that the architectural design process should be creative and fun, not tedious and uninspiring. Mark’s talent of sketching by hand and his expertise in spatial design earned him the prestigious title of Master of the Southwest in 2005 by Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine. He was also named as one of the top 125 architects in the Western United States by Western Interiors Magazine. Candelaria Design has been ranked as the No. 1 Residential Architecture Firm in Arizona repeatedly by Arizona Business Magazine. Some of the firm’s most prestigious honors include the Pacific Coast Builders Gold Nugget Award for custom homes over 6,500 square feet and the first LEED-certified home, The Zona Verde Home located in Paradise Valley, and the architect chosen to design the HGTV Smart Home located in Scottsdale in 2017.

Candelaria Team In the age of technology and rapid, impersonal communications, it is comforting to have the ability to instantly take an idea or concept from a client and manifest the notion with pen to paper. Candelaria’s hand-selected team of talented architects and project managers follow a careful and deliberate process in each custom luxury home or boutique commercial design. The firm’s philosophy is rooted in the initial human connection and enhanced with the latest technology that allows the team to produce designs that encompass a spirit and custom craftsmanship unlike any other offered today. Candelaria Lifestyle Candelaria Design has taken the notion of ‘inspiring living’ and expanded it to encompass annual self-guided European travel tours and custom luxury home furnishings designed with these world travels in mind. Currently, they offer tours of Italy and Spain. Both tours immerse guests in European ancient architecture, sweeping views of the land, culinary cooking classes, fine dining on local cuisine, antique shopping treasures and endless fun. Mark’s love of traveling, cooking and design has also inspired his own line of home accessories including a custom-designed Pasta Maker available in ‘race car red.’ For more information on Candelaria Design, we invite you to visit candelariadesign.com.

From concept to reality, Dale takes the vision each client has for their home and makes it a reality. Located directly off Market Street in DC Ranch, the award winning studio office looks more like a residence than a commercial building. Warm rich earth tones greet you at the door, and there is comfortable atmosphere that embraces you. Dale has designed homes ranging from 1,800 s.f to over 15,000 s.f. with budgets that span from $45 to over $1,200 p.s.f. Each custom residence is designed, crafted and personalized to the needs and desires of each client. Design distinction is what makes the difference in their homes, incorporating indoor/outdoor living environments, pool grottos, and other special features or spaces. They blend those unique characteristics into a cohesive design composition in the architectural style desired by the client. Careful consideration is given to the site and orientation of the home, integrating the site topography, solar orientation, and views to the best advantage to create the finest living experience. From traditional to contemporary styles, each residence design that is created by the firm embraces a sense of comfort, and has the uniquely individual design elements that make it truly a custom home.

Although Architecture is a technical discipline, to him, it is still an art form on a human scale. Licensed in several states, with over 35 years of experience, he strives to create design work as both sculpture and a functional living environment. Every commission is unique and must meet certain criteria to satisfy a client. The process of design involves effective communication and being a good listener. "Understanding and meeting our clients' needs is probably the single most important factor in achieving success with a project. Architectural design is a very personal process ... from concept to completion." While many Architects' design work occurs within a fairly narrow design range, Hann prefers to be known for his creative solutions involving a fairly wide range of design styles. His strength is in the diversity of his work and his ability to interpret his clients' needs without stylistic parameters. James Hann Design, AIA is "Art as Architecture where the greatest satisfaction is realizing his clients' dreams."

“Architects spend an entire life with the unreasonable idea that you can fight against gravity.” - Renzo Piano The current cliché, “thinking out of the box,” was hijacked from the equally overused architectural phrase, “breaking the box.” Safe to say, it is a late 20th Century notion and one usually associated with economics. As with any risk having great potential it brings an amplified possibility of failure. So what? Who has not literally dreamed of flapping their arms, taking off and effortlessly soaring? As an architect, I feel it is my professional responsibility to ensure my clients soar. Architecture has not surpassed the three great structural systems. The mighty arch (the first) eventually enabled the post and beam (the second). Both systems still remain inherently defined by compression. Then came the cantilever (the ultimate third system) and good bye to the box and welcome to tension with no visible means of support. “If I weren’t an optimist, it would be impossible for me to be an architect.” - Norman Foster

Valley Legacy Architects Ralph Haver: Neighborhoods to Haverhoods By Frank Aazami and David M. Brown Gonzales Home Photo: David M. Brown

1

Ralph Haver (1915-1987), AIA, helped build post-war Phoenix — and its demand for innovative contemporary architecture. As an architect and builder, he designed tract and custom homes, military

and

multifamily

housing,

neighborhoods,

churches,

schools, banks, municipal buildings and malls in Phoenix, Tucson, New Mexico and Colorado. He was first mentored by and later worked at a firm with Valley architect Ed Varney. He frequently partnered with builders Del Webb, Fred Woodward, David 1

Friedman and Del Trailor. Haver pioneered the new Phoenix following World War II, as GIs returned home to start families, and Easterners and Midwesterners found warm climate and new opportunities in a wide-open but air-conditioned Southwest. As many as 20,000 homes in the West are attributed to Haver. Initially starter level to meet the demand for affordable postwar housing, Haver-designed homes now have name-dropping panache and attract higher value because of their more progressive designs than many others of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. North Phoenix neighborhoods with Haver homes, such as Canal North (1946), Marlen Grove (1953), Windemere (1955), and Scottsdale’s Town & Country III (1963) are gentrifying, as young families and older professionals renew the half-century-plus-old

homes as contemporary havens. “Ralph Haver was a master of cost containment and was able to deliver inspiring and modestly elegant residential designs on a massive scale, improving the quality of life for tens of thousands of

families in the Southwest,” says Alison King, Phoenix designer and historian

who

Ralph Haver (cont.) “His charisma, good humor, big heart and ability to connect with the right partners and clients helped him build one of Arizona’s largest and most successful architecture firms. He was a servant to the public not only through his pursuit of civic work but through his involvement in Boy Scouts, AIA and mentoring the next generation of architects at ASU,” adds King, who also wrote the authorized Haver biography (RalphHaver.com). King

and

husband

Matthew

bought

their

double-wythe-brick Haver home 12 years ago and are continuing a spirited renovation. Mature trees and palms provide shade and an established aura consistent with the history of the home, 6

originally deeded in 1946. The couple are just the third owners. Their home is next door to Haver’s own, built for wife Millie and their son Ralph Haver Jr., “Bucky,” with help from his brother, Robert, a contractor. While developing their home, the Haver family immediately built the one next door, now the Kings’, which came to be known as the Hopkins House. “Dr. Doris Hopkins, an allergist, lived there with her Persian cats,” King explains. Hopkins purchased the home for $7,500; the one on the other side of the Kings’ home sold to the

7

Billings family for $5,000.

While many Havers, residential and commercial, are standing, others have been bulldozed, some by those unaware of and others simply insensitive toward his legacy. These include the largely demolished Coronado High School (1960), the landmark Kon Tiki motel (1961) on Van Buren Street and, perhaps most lamentably, the Cine Capri Theater (1964) on Camelback Road (with Henry G. Greene), which was fought valiantly for in the 1990s by the community.

‘Everything was designed by Haver, and they were modest and elegant in an easy rustic modern style’ - Alison King

10

“Ralph Haver was instrumental in introducing Mid-Century Modern architecture to post-war Phoenix. His homes were small but efficient and were designed with low maintenance and longlasting materials such as brick, stone and glass,” says Nick Tsontakis, AIA, NCARB, MRAIC, founder of Scottsdale-based Arizona Residential Architects (ARA). “The design of these homes is still relevant today and as fresh as when they were built.” Pasadena to Phoenix and Fame Born in Pasadena, California, Haver trained at USC Pasadena as an architect. After serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in World War II, he came to Phoenix, in theme with California émigré architects such as Fred Weaver, Richard Drover and Cal Straub.

11

Here he worked with brother Robert and their father Harry, a fine brick mason. He made what we now call Uptown Phoenix his

home, then two miles outside city limits — one reason why so many of the early blueprints are not retrievable, King says. She divides Haver’s career into four periods. From 1946–1951, he focused on furniture stores, office buildings, multifamily housing and custom homes developed with his family. He also began tract home developments to meet the postwar housing demand. His early production homes were typically less than 1,000 square feet because of federal mandates for conservation of materials as well as loan requirements.

Ralph Haver (cont.) “Everything was designed by Haver, and they were modest and elegant in an easy rustic modern style,” says King, whose neighborhood is Canal North, originally the Hixon Homes subdivision, south of Camelback Road. “Haver understood the ‘Less is More’ concept of Mies van der Rohe, while also achieving creative, functional and stylish design aesthetics,” says Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group with Russ Lyon|Sotheby’s International Realty, Scottsdale. His characteristic design elements include low-sloped rooflines, clerestory windows, mantel-less chimneys, floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, block construction, angled porch posts, brick patios and clinker bricks in the wainscoting. And, in spirit with the new car-centric culture of the 1950s, front doors open to the carport, as with home next door to the Kings’, Aazami explains. “His works are timeless staples of the Mid-Century Modern homes and buildings in Arizona that created a ripple beyond Arizona.”

Ralph Haver (cont.) The civic boom years follow, 1950–1960, when most of his neighborhoods, now proudly Haverhoods, were built. Haver and family moved from his home to one further north in the new Tonka Vista neighborhood (1955) on Missouri Avenue. During this time, he and business partner Jimmie Nunn designed many schools for Baby Boomers as well as buildings at ASU, such as the Engineering Center (1956, expanded through 1963), and commercial structures, including Lou Regester Furniture (1954), now Copenhagen Imports, and the Friedman office building, now Red Modern Furniture (1954). In the ’50s, Superlite block, made by the eponymous Phoenix company, became a standard building material suited to mass production. “Most of the residential work appears to have been

designed by Haver himself during this period as well,” says King, an associate professor of Graphic Design and History at the Art Institute of Phoenix. Matthew also teaches at the school. From 1960–1970, Haver built multifamily Golden Key homes for Del Trailor and numerous college buildings, most notably Phoenix College (1964–71), led by Nunn, with James Salter designing, as well as the Hilton Hotel at Scottsdale Road and Lincoln Drive (1965), churches, banks and offices. “Spanish style detailing appears to pique consumer interest in the post-modern era,” King says. Long-time Phoenix architect, Edward B. ‘Ned’ Sawyer, AIA, grew up in the Valley in the 1950s and 1960s and worked for and with Mid-Century Modern exponent Al Beadle throughout his lifetime.

8

Although he never worked with Haver, Sawyer celebrates his influence. He grew up with Jim Elmore, the son of James Elmore, then the dean of the architecture school at ASU. Sawyer’s class, following the elder Elmore’s suggestion, studied solutions for once-dry Salt River, later to inspire the Rio Salado Project, Tempe 19

Town Lake and today’s robust development along both shores. “Jim had parties, which often included architects like Haver, Dick Drover and Fred Guirey, so I was aware of his work. From the first, I knew his houses were very different from many that were being built in the Valley at the time: the emphasis on desert light with lots of window space, opening up the inside to the outside, for instance. His influence, 30 years after his passing, is still very strong.” During this time, the firm expanded outside of Arizona with offices in Hawaii and Guam, and won numerous AIA awards, including for the Phoenix Municipal Building in 1963, collaborating with Varney.

9

Haver’s final full decade, 1970–1980, are the corporate/industrial years, in which he and his partner Nunn took on the more projects such as Intel Deer Valley Facility (1981), the Salt River Project Administration Building (1981) and the landmark North Phoenix Baptist Church (1980). Custom homes remained a focus for Haver. After Haver retired in the early 1980s, the firm continued from its new office building on North 16th Street at Glendale Avenue (1982). After Haver’s death in 1987 and partner George Collamer’s in 1993, the firm closed. “Many of Haver’s drawings, renderings and records 18

20

ended up in a dumpster,” says King, who has worked diligently for years to recover much of the information that was lost. Jimmie Ray Nunn, 90, the last surviving partner, lives in a Flagstaff home he built in view of Arizona’s highest point, Humphrey’s Peak. Two Home Stories and the Next Haver Chapter Developer Jon Kitchell, son of the founder of Phoenix-based Kitchell Contractors, grew up in the 1950s with his four siblings in a Haver

10

home on the north side of Mummy Mountain.

‘The materials were simple and few, but the quality of the light in the home was exceptional and plentiful.’ - Jon Kitchell “The materials were simple and few, but the quality of the light in the home was exceptional and plentiful. The floors were buffed brown concrete and the fireplace and chimney, the patios and the retaining walls were built of stone from the site,” recalls Kitchell, co-principal of Phoenix-based Venue Projects, which focuses on community-building and place-making through the creation of gathering spaces that celebrate the history of Phoenix and the Valley. “The north views were through floor-to-ceiling glass with vistas to Pinnacle Peak and beyond,” he adds. “It looked and felt like it was a part of the desert.”

Ralph Haver (cont.) Tiffany Mason and her family live in a 1952 Haver home in the revivifying Marlen Grove neighborhood, Bethany Home Road to Montebello Avenue, 10th to 11th streets. Although renovated in the 1970s, their home still retained the Haver character 14 years ago when they purchased. “It still had its original low sloping roof line, exposed interior beams block walls that had not been stuccoed over and all of its clerestory windows,” she says. But, “it was a mess,” including the original cast-iron underground plumbing, so the couple hired an architect and replaced all of the plumbing, gas and electrical lines. “We peeled away some of the

18

modifications of the past and accentuated the simple and beautiful lines of our little ’50s tract house and created indoor and outdoor living spaces that reflect our lives and our sources of inspiration: nature and art,” she says. They highlighted the sloping roof line and added floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide into a steel pocket to create a contemporary indoor/outdoor dining and entertaining area. Steel structural elements were added in three spots to open up some of the interior spaces; they clad two of them with the original-size wood beams.

12

The palette is basic: white walls and large charcoal colored porcelain tile floors. “The light, wood, trees, plants and art objects are what give it its spirit and expression, but the character is pure Haver,” Mason explains. “I think Ralph Haver would have liked that we highlighted all of his main design elements in our neighborhood and created an earthy and Zenlike sanctuary that is so special to us that it is like a member of our family,” she says. For her, tract house developments suggest ubiquity and minimal

19

creativity. “However, because of Haver’s choice of materials, attention to lines, and the play of light, the homes in our neighborhood have been valued over the years, as people could see that they were not ordinary tract houses; rather they create a beautiful backdrop and opportunity for self-expression.”

13

So, too, she believes that a Haver home conduces to community: Haverhoods are engaging neighborhoods. “The spacing of the homes, the open carports and the fact that so many of the homes have front patios means that you see your neighbors a lot and have many natural opportunities to form relationships and friendships,” she says. Our technological overconnectedness produces personal and community disconnects, and Haver helps. “It is a true gift to live in a community where you know all of your neighbors, their dogs, how 12.Mason-Lopez Haver Home - before photo Photo: Tiffany Mason-Lopez 13.Mason-Lopez Haver Home - aer photo Photo: Tiffany Mason-Lopez

their family is doing,” she says. “Now, maybe more than ever, we 20

need more designs that consider true and authentic human connection –– places where we think of others, places that value empathy over the material.” For more information, see RalphHaver.com

Kendle Design Collaborative designs homes that speak to your heart and soul, homes that are inspired by the natural beauty of the land that you call home, be it forest, waterfront, prairie or desert. We strive to design homes where a unique visual delight may be found around every corner and in every detail, often changing with the passing of the sun or the changing of the seasons. This we believe is living architecture, an ever changing natural tapestry that celebrates the many joys of living. As an architect, I feel my primary responsibility is to clearly understand my client’s priorities, their values, and aspirations, but most importantly to understand what brings them joy. Then and only then can I carefully craft the design and details of their new home such that it enhances their daily living, bringing them joy in their quietest moments as well as times of celebration. I hope that you will consider us for your next home design. We would be honored to work with you, where together we can design a home that brings you joy.

The Union of Dwelling and Land Clint Miller’s childhood home was nestled in the hills of Southern California, where large expanses of living room windows framed landscaping, where honest, load-bearing wood beams both supported the home’s structure and adorned its interior. As a youngster, Clint felt a kinship with these simple structures and their textures and proportions, and to the views that revealed the surrounding environment. These early experiences helped shape Clint’s architectural quest to understand the intricate balance required to create a home that forges a natural relationship of dwelling and environment. For more than two decades now, Architect Clint Miller has striven to design homes that form a union with their site ... whether integrating into lush urban communities or growing organically from the surrounding desert flora. Miller’s body of work balances delicate detail and bold composition, melding traditional techniques and materials with sensitive design and application. Each home expresses an organic relationship between site and design; each home respects and embraces its site. Clint’s residential projects have been featured in AIA Home Tours, honored in an AIA Homes of the Year competition, and recognized in an AIA Historical Preservation Exhibit. In March of 2010 he was honored as a Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden magazine and has been featured several times on that publication’s cover.

Designing and building custom homes requires a very personal and dedicated connection to the client and their wishes. Every architect in the ARA understands this connection and excels in achieving signature design and thus, real value for their clients. I have been fortunate enough to participate in the roles of client, architect, designer and builder over the years having built several homes for myself. I understand the process from each perspective which gives me insight to address any unique requirement. I utilize progressive technologies which allow me to present, convey and interact with a client or team member regardless of location. Designing and building a custom home is the ultimate reward and reflection on a lifetime of success. I understand the importance of conveying the correct statement my clients wish to make about their new home. I enjoy working with great clients wanting to create a great piece of architecture regardless of scale.

Christine Wareing AIA Principal Architect

PO Box 25486 Scottsdale, Arizona 85255 christy@christyandco.com www.christyandco.com 480.483.0713 Christy & Company Architecture specializes in high-end custom residential projects, and have had the pleasure of working with great clients and sites for many years. We are team players, and enjoy working through the process with the design team, usually consisting of the interior designer, builder, engineers, landscape architect, lighting designer, automation (a/v) specialist, custom craftsmen and trades, and of course, the client. Christy & Company is dedicated to providing our clients with not just talented design, but with enjoying the best experience possible throughout the process of any project. We have embraced the mantra ‘Where Sanctuary is Sculpture’ which explains the company’s direction and focus, all of which is the culmination of Christy’s southwest upbringing and education, coupled with her innate sensibilities of design, that compliment clients’ diverse cultures and lifestyles with their high-end southwest properties. We believe our surroundings give us an experience that has a powerful effect on our quality of life. This concept is a notion that Christy became aware of at an early age and it has carried through in her work ever since. She founded the boutique firm over 10 years ago, even though her residential experience working on prestigious properties began several years earlier. Christy holds a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University and a Masters of Architecture from the University of New Mexico. She has been a registered Architect in Arizona since 1999.

I’m often asked what an architect does. It’s a mystery for sure. The obvious thing we do is create complex drawings with special tools and big pieces of paper, but before all that, before all the sketches and plans... a good architect listens. Yes, being an architect is about hearing a person’s goals and desires. But, most of the time that’s not enough. It’s not enough just to listen. I’ve found that being an architect, an exceptional architect, is about asking the right questions. Questions that release a person’s hidden dreams and secret desires, questions that lead to personal and unique expressions, whatever they may be. I care about your vision, your dream, and your goals. I listen as much for what’s not being said as what is. My team and I would be proud to help you experience that miraculous feeling of living in the home of your dreams.
