Under One Umbrella

Recognising that traditional schooling methods repeatedly fail neurodivergent pupils through rigid curriculum and insensitive architectural design, this project proposes an alternative approach. Questioning how accommodating a space truly is if it does not consider all users, redefined functionality aims to focus on a marginalised demographic in order that the end result is an increasingly inclusive environment.

Designed around the sensory experience, the plan provides a plethora of working conditions, granting each child the opportunity to learn in a setting best suited to their needs. Increased flexibility within the proposed spatial arrangement and teaching style support a broad programme, enabling the school to open its doors to the wider community outside of teaching hours - working to also challenge the efficiency of the built environment in line with 15-Minute CIty principles.

Designed with both neurotypical and neurodiverse individuals of all age ranges in mind, the primary aim of this project is to bring everybody together, under one umbrella.

Rhythmic arrangement of service & activity spaces, following angles dictated by existing urban form.

Dividing activity spaces into piazzas, atelier & mini-atelier.

Locating quiet, independent & group learning spaces within the service blocks.

Varying the height of each block creates a visible hierarchy of spaces.

Ceiling height influences pace of movement & noise. Activity spaces are in taller blocks, & study spaces in shorter blocks.

To emphasise spatial hierarchy & allow for increased pace of movement, widths of spaces are adapted.

Weaving external courtyards into the plan ensures the relationship with nature is maintained throughout.

Mezzanine levels or balconies within the social space help to mimic an outdoor piazza & create interaction.

Roof form is used to control the way that sunlight interacts with the space to avoid over-stimulation & overheating.
