Education DESIGNING SCHOOLS FOR THE FUTURE These are exciting times in the world of education and school design. We are on the cusp of change when it comes to creating new learning environments that support the needs of 21st century learners. Many studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between the building environment and learning achievement. A study of public schools in 2000 showed that the measures of the school facility, such as natural light, air, controllability of environment and educational facility planning explained more of the differences in test performance across schools than did any other factors such as family background, and attendance. Traditional teaching spaces are disappearing and we are exploring ways to interpret any space as a learning space – hallways, cafeterias, libraries, even the grounds outside. Using the ideas behind differentiated learning styles and the understanding that no two students learn the same way, we can begin to create varied learning environments throughout the school and within the instructional spaces that are designed with students’ learning needs in mind. Technology is also changing the way we communicate and learn, yet the fundamental layouts of learning institutions has remained remarkably familiar. A key element in emerging patterns is participatory learning. This includes the many ways that learners use new technologies to participate in virtual communities where they share ideas, comment on one another’s projects, and plan, design, implement, advance, or simply discuss their practices, goals and ideas together. Children are growing up today in a radically different environment than children did even as little as 10 or 15 years ago. They are immersed in technology and have been exposed to it for their entire lives; it is as natural to them as breathing. It is critical for educators and designers to recognize that this digital immersion is changing the way they think. They have an unprecedented level of connectivity, interaction and feedback in their daily lives and as such, we need to provide that type of learning environment for them in their schools. To create a truly successful learning environment, there must be engagement with the entire community. The process of design is in many ways as important as the design itself. Through an integrated collaborative design process we explore the new trends in educational design and create schools that truly respond to the needs of 21st century learners.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Learning isn’t confined to the classroom. Informal and formal learning will occur throughout the school and, with the appropriate design, a school can provide opportunities for students to grow intellectually, socially and emotionally. Accordingly, every square foot of the school should be considered a setting for learning. As students move through the school, displays can engage their imaginations, seating areas can provide a place to linger with a friend for a moment, and interactions with eduators can reinforce classroom activity. Circulation space also can be reconceived as an active extension of the classroom, providing breakout space for small group work, reading groups, and projects. Active use of circulation space is fostered by transparency between the circulation space and the classroom, enabling the educators to observe and engage. Optimizing the school extends outdoors, as well. Micro-climates can be created; for example creating a sheltered south facing courtyard, that invites use in all seasons. Site design amenities including gardens, amphitheaters, loggias, and plazas further enhance the possibilities.

SUSTAINABILITY All buildings are about the future especially education facilities which are responsible for preparing the next generation to meet the challenges of our collective future. Sustainability is ‘a given’ in school buildings, with strategies for energy efficiency, healthy indoor environments, daylighting and “LEED” achievement now commonplace. But successful and enduring sustainability is unique to each school, each neighborhood, and each community. Fundamental questions about how we learn best and in what kind of environment will always outnumber the answers, but we keep asking them. What is a classroom? What happens if students start travelling in driverless vehicles? Where will they eat – and what? Should the building be carbon neutral? Does the pencil have a future? Will the architecture inspire the broader community to consider our fragile blue planet? These are the kinds of questions we ask in delivering innovative, sustainable, on budget school buildings-buildings that people love.

The financial aspect of spectator facilities, and in particular the operating costs, is becoming a major focus in the design process. Our experience has given us the tools to understand and utilize important metrics – from the number of washrooms required, points of sales per capita for food and beverage vending, to the potential revenue per seat based on the size and type of venue we are designing. We were the first architectural firm to bring private suites and other premium seating types to the mid-size spectator facility, creating a lucrative additional revenue stream for the facility and the home team.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Recreation and spectator facilities can be energy-intensive buildings and present unique challenges in design. More and more, communities and operators are seeing the benefits of a sustainable design process – to reduce initial building and ongoing operational costs and to improve energy efficiency over the life of a facility. Architecture49 designed the first LEED Gold certified recreation facility in Canada, the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ontario, and were involved in the design of the first LEED Gold certified events centre in the United States, the Kent Events Center in Kent, Washington. Whatever the size of the facility, we work with our clients to develop innovative and sustainable design solutions. This takes into consideration interdisciplinary factors ranging from energy and indoor environmental quality to site design and materials selection. Implementation of such strategies offers direct benefits to the project that include capital cost reduction and life cycle cost effectiveness.

Stacey is the National Practice Leader for Architecture49’s Education Sector with over 20 years of design experience. Stacey is passionate about school design. As such, she regularly attends conferences to stay current with new trends in education design. She has recently completed her advanced certificate in educational facility planning through San Diego State University and this course of study fosters the notion that architecture can support and enhance student learning and achievement through varied learning environments. Stacey is very interested in the idea that every space is a learning space and how the architecture and design can create spaces for informal meetings, spontaneous conversations, or small group learning that engages many outside of the traditional learning environments. When we create spaces that address the varied learning styles of all students, we are creating opportunities for success. Stacey recently started sharing her knowledge of education facility design at Dalhousie University (Faculty of Architecture) through a Master’s level humanities course on education facility design. Through this course, students will enter a design studio phase that will see them produce school designs utilizing the theories of 21st century learning concepts.

The school was developed around a simple cruciform shape which maximizes the ability to maintain safe, secure academic space while also offering the public/private zoning that is necessary for after-hours and public use of the school’s facilities. She was an important team member the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool and the design development for the Chedabuto Lifestyle Centre. École Secondaire du Sommet is an exciting, unique, landmark school and community centre in Bedford South that serves 300+ students in grades 6-12 as well as the vibrant French-speaking community. The school was developed around a simple cruciform shape which maximizes the ability to maintain safe, secure academic space while also offering the public/private zoning that is necessary for after-hours and public use of the school’s facilities. A two-storey circulation avenue featuring a clerestory links the multi-function and community spaces, floods the area with natural light, and enlivens key spaces in the building. The building features a daycare that is made available to the entire French community. Respect for the culture of the school community directed many design elements, such as the glazing colours, which were taken from the Acadian flag, and the sloped roof lines that recall the facets of the Acadian Star. This project is targeting LEED silver featuring rainwater reuse technology and a green roof. Designed as a joint use facility for the community, high goals were set for the use of recycled materials, regional materials and certified wood. Special attention was paid to creating a sustainable site such as conserving open space and avoiding sensitive areas.

Surrounded by community recreation facilities and just a short walk from Lunenburg’s UNESCO World Heritage zone, the Bluenose Academy draws on the town’s rich architectural language in providing a contemporary, state of the art educational facility for over 500 students. The design offers views to the harbour and historic Lunenburg Academy from many significant vantage points in its three-storey academic wing. A sawtooth configuration in plan gives a domestic scale to the building and reinvents corridors as learning space opportunities. Aspiring to LEED Gold, the building has a high performance envelope and incorporates solar air, solar thermal and solar PV technology. Locally manufactured wood pellets, a renewable resource, will provide much of the space heating. A green roof will harvest rainwater, and low flow fixtures will help reduce water consumption. Much of the building will be built from regionally sourced materials.

The new Charles P. Allen (C.P. Allen) High School accommodates both academic and community uses and is designed for 1200 students. A large exterior courtyard, promoting the use of exterior green space, is the primary inspirational area. It is encircled by the creative heart of the school – drama, art, music, cafetorium, visual arts, etc. Spaces dedicated to creative thought curriculum (art, technology production and collaborative/project-based learning) are also positioned adjacent to the courtyard. The community space features exercise and activity rooms, meeting rooms, a daycare space and a full size gymnasium. The school is targeting LEED Gold as part of the CaGBC rating system. Some of the design initiatives are an R-wall using spray foam insulation and an R-roof. The exterior spray foam insulation is made with soy oil and recycled plastic bottles. Preference was given to regional products and products with a high recycled content.

Therefore, special consideration was given to situating the school’s sporting and performance spaces to allow for optimum academic and public use of the space. As such, the school is organized around a continuous circulation route with a two-storey, glazed atrium connecting many of the important academic and shared public spaces. The project is targeting LEED Gold, and a high priority was placed on using materials that were chosen for their low environmental impacts and indoor air quality. A green and reflective roof combined with native plant landscaping reduces energy and water requirements for the building as well as enhances green space.

A49 was awarded the first prize in an international competition for the design of a housing complex in Shenzhen, China.

SIZE Site: 25 acres

The 1600 units of this high end project are distributed in several towers ranging between 30 and 55 stories in height, for a total of residential built area of 400.000 square meters. The areas of the apartment units vary between 220 and 440 square meters. The project also includes a commercial area of 35.000 m². The project creates a high density development within a park setting where residents live in luxury while enjoying the natural beauty of the site and its surroundings.

SHENYANG BAITA PROJECT SHENYANG, CHINA (WITH Provencher_Roy)

A49 was awarded a prize in an international competition for the design of a housing complex in Shenyang, China. The 972 unit project consists of forty six 6-storey buildings (664 units), seven 11-storey buildings (308 units), as well as commercial space, a school, a library and a community cultural center. The design of the complex provides comfort and security to the residents. By locating the parking and vehicular circulation below grade, the gardens and pedestrian pathways flow between the buildings uninterrupted by vehicular circulation patterns. In planning the units, certain Chinese traditions, such as room orientations were respected. For example, the living rooms and master bedrooms were always given a southerly orientation.

M3M GOLF ESTATE GARGAON, INDIA

The project consists in the design of a new residential development on 75 acres of land in a prestigious sector of Gurgaon, adjacent to New Delhi, India. Once all phases are complete 1, 800 residential units will be constructed and will house an expected population of just under 10,000 persons. The residential unit mix consist of a variety of unit types ranging from 2 bedrooms to 5 bedrooms as well as one level units and two level individual units all focused on a family clientele. This project is designed to introduce a new standard for high density urban living while avoiding the claustrophobic feeling of developments of similar scale. All units have been designed to accommodate natural cross ventilation, views in multiple directions as well as the primary view, from living dinning spaces, towards landscaped courts and golf course areas as well sun screen on west facing elevations. This residential development will be dotted with 6 distinct towers, most raised on stilts to make use of the space at grade, below the buildings, for recreational and social purposes. Its architectural expression acts as a unifying force that creates visual delight as well as introducing a distinct identity which differentiates this development from the standard expression of adjacent constructions. The architectural expression is unique within the massive and somewhat monotonous rapid urbanisation presently ongoing through India.

JAYPEE GREENS

GREATER NOIDA, INDIA (WITH ARCOP INDIA)

A golf-oriented real estate development, the project consists of a mix of residential bungalows, town houses and a large variety of mid to highrise apartment buildings. The golf course is designed by Greg Norman. The project boasts a 250 room resort with restaurants, banquet halls and marriage plaza situated on the golf course. There is, adjacent to the resort, a Six Senses Spa. In one corner of the site sits of India’s largest integrated sports complexes with indoor basketball, badminton, health spa, Olympic sized swimming pool and 12 tennis courts. A 60 acre park with canals, water bodies and large tree areas is open to both residents and the public. A primary school and town center, with shops, guest houses, party rooms, etc., was built for the convenience of the residents.

Design and construction of a 340,000 square meter, 2, 259 unit residential complex located in Gurgaon, India. Overlaid by a sequence of sheltering, living and residential terraces that are articulated by their characteristic sky-sighted balconies, the Great Park stretches across its vast spread of green enclaves and enclosures. Four thematic Greens – accommodating Play, Relaxation, Social activity and Sports – are defined by the Residences. A system of shaded walks and pathways joins Courts, Lobbies and Greens with the surrounding lawns and the Club. The Club’s pool complex and party areas open to two of the adjacent Greens, offering additional capacity for special events, when needed.

A49 and WSP provided integrated, multi-disciplinary design services for this new multi-use recreation centre, attached to the existing Quinte Sports Centre in Belleville. The 170,000ft2 design-build, addition includes 2 NHL arenas, an aquatics facility, gymnasium, fitness centre, running track, multi-use community space, retail space and administration offices. A main design feature of the building is that all facilities are grouped around a main two-storey atrium, or “pedestrian spine”. The atrium is the primary circulation route and the principal organizing feature of the building connecting the new structure with the existing facility. This atrium with clerestory windows is designed as the focal point for visitor circulation through the Centre, while encouraging interaction with the new arenas, pool, gymnasium and the cafes which are all visually open to the atrium.

Queens Place Emera Centre is a modern recreation facility for the communities of Queens County. The facility includes a 1000-seat arena, fitness centre, multi-purpose spaces, and walking track. The building’s exterior of translucent cladding with bands of vision glass allow for natural lighting within the facility during daylight hours, and at night the lights from within shine outward, giving the building a beacon-like quality for visitors and passersby. Inside, the lobby area is designed as a community gathering space, and all major elements of the building are visible from this area. The transparency and connectedness of the plan represents that of community life, one rooted in the spirit of health and wellness which will provide cultural and recreational amenity for current and future generations of Queens County residents.

Credit Union Place is a two-phased, innovative community recreation centre constructed for the City of Summerside, PE as part of its overall municipal downtown revitalization strategy. Phase One is a 4000 m2 aquatics facility complete with six lane 25m lap pool, leisure pool with water slide, water umbrella and hot tub, sauna and steam room facilities. On the second floor, overlooking the pool, are the fitness/weight room, squash courts, and convention facilities, including a 400-seat meeting hall and smaller meeting rooms. Phase Two features a 4000-spectator arena that can also be used for musical performances and other events. The arena has luxury mezzanine level “skyboxes”, practice rink, walking track, an eight lane bowling alley, and retail space. Sustainable features include geothermal wells, heat transfer technology, and a high efficiency building envelope.
