and in the opportunity to shape urban infrastructure to Canadian principles of honesty, diversity, practicality and regionalism. With offices from coast to coast across Canada, Architecture49 boasts a history spanning over half a century of profoundly significant contributions. Our collective of regional offices and our array of specializations and experiences will continue to be in harmony with the Canadian landscape.

Diamond Peninsula Hotel Complex, Dongguan, China (with PR+A)

From St. John’s to Vancouver, we navigate urban and rural contexts. Some cities enjoy a wealth of heritage properties, and benefit from a mindful approach to blending contemporary glass with two-hundred-year-old stonework. Other regions experience unique weather—high winds, frequent storms, or low winter temperatures— and require local expertise to craft gathering places built to withstand those conditions with longevity and relevance.

Whether it’s the heart of old Quebec, or the vast prairies of Manitoba, our work celebrates the cultural and geographic mosaic of Canada. We endeavour to define the essence of a project not only to meet client needs, but to design with a vocabulary that will enrich that region and provide a meaningful sense of place for years to come.

SECTOR

Hospitality Our hospitality practice is a Canadian leader in the integrated design and delivery of high profile urban hotels, resorts, and conference centres. To emphasize quality is to emphasize the best of the human experience. From the distinguished to the theatrical, attention to detail in hospitality design is about the richness of the guest experience—and the architectural elements that host that experience. In designing hotels, convention centres, casinos, recreational and health & spa centres, we design, shape and form spaces that inspire. Architecture49 has over 30 years experience working with the hospitality industry. Our experience and expertise – and our attention to emerging trends within the industry – has made us a valued partner to developers, owners and operators. From feasibility studies, programming, and conceptual design, to detailed construction guidance, our hospitality practice group understands guest experience and have helped to stage tailored projects across Canada, the United States, China, the Middle East, Pacific Asia and the Caribbean.

A SENSE OF PLACE Innovative hotel design is reflective of international standards and local cultures. We have had the opportunity to work with clients around the world, on projects ranging from eco-resort hotels in Tobago, to smaller boutique hotels, as well as much bigger branded hotels located in urban settings. Today’s guests want to experience a sense of place. They expect to feel that they are experiencing a culture, while enjoying the amenities and facilities they have come to expect from a modern hotel. Quality project design results from being sensitive to regional culture, context, and prioritizing respect for the environment. We work to understand climate impacts like sun, wind, snow and humidity and design to reflect these specific challenges. We strive to use local materials and skills. To innovate is to reinterpret traditional approaches for today’s realities, in a way that is sustainable, and respectful. This approach is universal and is applied to all of our projects.

UNDERSTANDING GUEST EXPERIENCE Our clients come to us because we speak the language of hospitality. We have our fingers on the pulse of market trends as well as the new, heightened expectations of today’s guest. Guests are looking for an enhanced experience – from a lobby space that engages and energizes to conference facilities that reflect the innovative technology demanded by business. We recognize that quality hotel design emphasizes lifestyle, and not simply utility. At the outset of each project, we seek to understand who will be using the hotel; whether it is intended for business travellers, vacationers or as a stopping place on a longer journey. We consider how guests will use the facilities – from gyms to restaurants, how they will arrive at the hotel, and whether they will arrive in groups, as families, or individually. We consider how we will make every guest feel welcome, whatever their needs or expectations. We’ve worked with international hoteliers, and diverse hotel brands to understand the increasingly segmented and demanding marketplace. We work with our clients to provide the amenities and surroundings that guests have come to expect – and we work to exceed those expectations.

AN EYE FOR DETAIL Our expertise comes from a deep understanding of the hospitality industry – the unique market, operations, and economics of a new development. Our experience tells us the basic formulas that make a development succeed – from international travel ratings and the size of each guest suite, to the efficient back-of-house planning and the number of rooms per floor for maximum efficiency. We know that each development is unique. We work with developers, governments, operators, and franchisees to understand the complex needs of each, and then use this to inform our design process.
