and in the opportunity to shape urban infrastructure to Canadian principles of honesty, diversity, practicality and regionalism. With offices from coast to coast across Canada, Architecture49 boasts a history spanning over half a century of profoundly significant contributions. Our collective of regional offices and our array of specializations and experiences will continue to be in harmony with the Canadian landscape.
Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, West Vancouver, BC
From St. John’s to Vancouver, we navigate urban and rural contexts. Some cities enjoy a wealth of heritage properties, and benefit from a mindful approach to blending contemporary glass with two-hundred-year-old stonework. Other regions experience unique weather—high winds, frequent storms, or low winter temperatures— and require local expertise to craft gathering places built to withstand those conditions with longevity and relevance.
Whether it’s the heart of old Quebec, or the vast prairies of Manitoba, our work celebrates the cultural and geographic mosaic of Canada. We endeavour to define the essence of a project not only to meet client needs, but to design with a vocabulary that will enrich that region and provide a meaningful sense of place for years to come.

Transportation Effective transportation networks are the life blood of our world’s urban development and economic prosperity. Transportation systems impact the flow of goods and raw materials, the accessibility of talent and human resources to work places, and the quality and sustainability of our urban, suburban and rural environments. Architecture49’s transportation practice specializes in multi-use corridors, gathering places and intersections that accommodate everyone, from pedestrians and motorists to buses, ferries, planes and freight. We integrate high-technology systems and environmental sustainability with architecture and urban planning, taking a holistic view of infrastructure and flow to make communities more vibrant. Well-designed transportation systems not only deliver people and products efficiently to their desired destinations, but they enhance and enrich the journeys. We have a passion for and core belief in sustainable cities and living environments and are committed to careful, responsive and creative design of the transportation systems which serve them and their inhabitants.

AIR Airport terminal facilities, whether they are for international airports, airline operations, fixed base of operations or airside support, are one of the world’s most complex projects types. Successful airport terminal design also embraces the essence of place, the moments of arrival and discovery, the points of departure and goodbyes. As such, they are as much people places with significant civic design character as they are goods and passenger processing facilities. Our airport experts thrive on designing these experiential features as well as the technological complexities of airports. We work closely with our aviation planning and engineering partners to ensure that the long list of requirements and advanced security and technology are met, resulting in functional facilities as well as memorable destinations.

LAND - RAPID TRANSIT, LIGHT RAPID TRANSIT, BUS TRANSIT Ground transit and road systems shape our towns and cities and provide the opportunity for growth and improved environments. Passenger stations provide simple to navigate routes and safe, comfortable waiting areas which encourage ridership and system usage. Stations, terminals and other fixed facilities are design opportunities for positive community markers and civic identification. Architecture49 is committed to well-designed rapid transit - its effective and non-intrusive integration into streetscapes and neighbourhoods, and its ability to fundamentally support the reduction of air pollution and vehicular congestion.

WATER - PORTS & FERRY TERMINALS We understand the critical nature of marine site functional planning, vehicular circulation, security and control, and the often around-the-clock operations of ports and ferry terminals. The network of pedestrian routes, service vehicles, transport trucks and rail cars, passenger vehicles combined with the efficient loading and unloading of people and goods, is critical to port and ferry operations.

PARKING From below grade parking garages with parks above them to multi-storey buildings with integrated commercial and retail frontages, our designs include architectural features intended to soften otherwise engineering focused solutions. Our parkade designs focus on incorporating an urban presence and qualities of architecture, detail and civic character into well-thought-out, efficient and organized structures.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Architecture49 believes that the design and planning of effective transportation networks and infrastructure helps reduce motor vehicle use, traffic congestion and air pollution in urban and suburban environments, making it fundamental to the creation of sustainable, liveable cities. To enhance this core principle, we create sustainable buildings which support global transportation networks by using energy reducing and efficient systems, long lasting, durable materials that are fabricated from renewable resources whenever possible, and timeless architecture that often exceeds LEED requirements. We lead and support our clients in their quest to provide cost conscious and efficient transportation services in a broadly sustainable manner whether for road, rail or air passengers or for the shipping of goods globally.

Heavy Equipment Transportation Centre, Red River College, Winnipeg, MB LEED Silver Certified Maintaining a high quality indoor environment was a central goal for this project. Low VOC materials and finishes, along with a policy on using low-impact cleaning products, helped to minimize students’ exposure to chemicals. Providing a traditional industrial windowless shop environment was not an option, so wherever possible, spaces were sunlit by clerestory windows and large expanses of curtain wall.
