and in the opportunity to shape urban infrastructure to Canadian principles of honesty, diversity, practicality and regionalism. With offices from coast to coast across Canada, Architecture49 boasts a history spanning over half a century of profoundly significant contributions. Our collective of regional offices and our array of specializations and experiences will continue to be in harmony with the Canadian landscape.

From St. John’s to Vancouver, we navigate urban and rural contexts. Some cities enjoy a wealth of heritage properties, and benefit from a mindful approach to blending contemporary glass with two-hundred-year-old stonework. Other regions experience unique weather—high winds, frequent storms, or low winter temperatures— and require local expertise to craft gathering places built to withstand those conditions with longevity and relevance.
Whether it’s the heart of old Quebec, or the vast prairies of Manitoba, our work celebrates the cultural and geographic mosaic of Canada. We endeavour to define the essence of a project not only to meet client needs, but to design with a vocabulary that will enrich that region and provide a meaningful sense of place for years to come.

Sports & Entertainment Architecture49 is a national leader in sports and entertainment architecture with over 45 years of experience designing for this sector. We understand the distinct requirements for community recreation centres, elite athletic facilities, as well as multi-purpose sports and entertainment venues. Our architects take pride in the fact that the buildings we design engage users and enhance quality of life, while being sensitive to designing spaces that satisfy community needs within budgetary requirements. We are committed to an open and collaborative design process that focuses on the flexibility of accommodating the widest possible spectrum of programs, events and facility users of all ages, abilities and aptitudes. A well-designed recreation facility or multi-events venue has the opportunity to be an iconic beacon or landmark for a community. By understanding how people interact within these spaces and by engaging in a collaborative design process, we create facilities that add to the longevity and quality of life and vitality of the members of the communities they serve. We are passionate about and are committed to the development of sports, recreation and entertainment facilities because they contribute to the well-being of residents and users by enhancing their physical, mental and social development by providing the opportunity for participation in physical activities, social interaction and enjoyment of cultural and community events. Architecture49 has completed over 75 recreation facilities, which include ice arenas, aquatic centres, gymnasia, sports fields, fitness centres and libraries. We have also designed over 30 spectator and entertainment venues (adding up to over 350,000 spectator seats) some of which are home to professional sports teams, have featured notable entertainment acts and have even hosted Olympic events.

SPECTATOR & ENTERTAINMENT FACILITIES A multi-purpose spectator building is a complex and dynamic venue which should successfully accommodate a wide range of events and functions, through appropriately designed facilities and well integrated amenity spaces. The more event types a building can accommodate, the more it will be supported by the community and the more viable the economic model becomes.

The financial aspect of spectator facilities, and in particular the operating costs, is becoming a major focus in the design process. Our experience has given us the tools to understand and utilize important metrics – from the number of washrooms required, points of sales per capita for food and beverage vending, to the potential revenue per seat based on the size and type of venue we are designing. We were the first architectural firm to bring private suites and other premium seating types to the mid-size spectator facility, creating a lucrative additional revenue stream for the facility and the home team.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Recreation and spectator facilities can be energy-intensive buildings and present unique challenges in design. More and more, communities and operators are seeing the benefits of a sustainable design process – to reduce initial building and ongoing operational costs and to improve energy efficiency over the life of a facility. Architecture49 designed the first LEED Gold certified recreation facility in Canada, the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ontario, and were involved in the design of the first LEED Gold certified events centre in the United States, the Kent Events Center in Kent, Washington. Whatever the size of the facility, we work with our clients to develop innovative and sustainable design solutions. This takes into consideration interdisciplinary factors ranging from energy and indoor environmental quality to site design and materials selection. Implementation of such strategies offers direct benefits to the project that include capital cost reduction and life cycle cost effectiveness.
Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, Oakville, ON LEED Gold Certified First quad pad arena in Canada to achieve LEED Gold certification. Project highlights include a 42% energy cost reduction compared to a conventional arena building, reduced heat island effects, light pollution reduction, stormwater management, water efficient fixtures, and recycled and lowemitting materials.
