Architecture49 is a national leader in the integrated design and delivery of Canada’s most important buildings and environments. Across the country, we create inspiring spaces that elevate the health, social vitality and sustainability of our communities. We also have a depth of experience in designing complex, highprofile projects. A49 is united in the belief that communities are enriched by a broader, more enlivened collaboration between clients, builders, architects, engineers, interior designers, landscape architects and urban planners. We believe in the strength of a multi-disciplinary view,

and in the opportunity to shape urban infrastructure to Canadian principles of honesty, diversity, practicality and regionalism. With offices from coast to coast across Canada, Architecture49 boasts a history spanning over half a century of profoundly significant contributions. Our collective of regional offices and our array of specializations and experiences will continue to be in harmony with the Canadian landscape.

From St. John’s to Vancouver, we navigate urban and rural contexts. Some cities enjoy a wealth of heritage properties, and benefit from a mindful approach to blending contemporary glass with two-hundred-year-old stonework. Other regions experience unique weather—high winds, frequent storms, or low winter temperatures— and require local expertise to craft gathering places built to withstand those conditions with longevity and relevance.

Whether it’s the heart of old Quebec, or the vast prairies of Manitoba, our work celebrates the cultural and geographic mosaic of Canada. We endeavour to define the essence of a project not only to meet client needs, but to design with a vocabulary that will enrich that region and provide a meaningful sense of place for years to come.

Science & Technology As the world leader in the design and engineering of specialty laboratories, we have developed unsurpassed expertise in creating specialized and unique facilities required by government and academia for research, testing and evaluation for the most stringent requirements. Over the last 30 years, our team has developed some of the world’s most complex research environments, many of which remain as benchmarks within their class. We have pioneered and integrated many advanced architectural and engineering concepts and technologies now in-place in facilities around the globe—the kind of sophisticated infrastructure that helps fuel scientific achievement.

DEEP UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE Our clients come to us because of our in-depth understanding of the way modern science is done. We understand that there is no single approach to laboratory design. Each of our clients has a unique set of scientific goals, and we help them articulate these aspirations in the development of a functional modern laboratory setting. We understand the difference between a teaching lab and a diagnostic space, a research laboratory space and a biocontainment facility, and have executed designs that make the most of each of these spaces. Science is becoming increasingly collaborative and interdisciplinary. In recent years there has been a movement towards laboratory design that respects human usage patterns, and accommodates the need for flexibility within the laboratory environment. Flexible laboratory spaces can extend the life of a lab facility, allowing different programs and researchers to use the same spaces without extensive and expensive retrofits.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN A typical laboratory can use as much as five times the energy and water per square foot as a typical office building. Because of the unique requirements for a laboratory space, and the heightened requirements of health and safety codes, traditional measures of sustainability may not be adequate to quantify the requirements of sustainability in the laboratory setting. Our experience helps our clients maximize efficiency both in terms of energy usage and initial building cost. We push to make sure our projects acknowledge the energy usage required to meet knowledge goals, while seeking the best solution for energy consumption. We have implemented strategies to effectively organize mechanical and electrical services, streamlining the distribution of lab services such as water, HVAC, and lab gases in a way that simplifies construction and reduces construction cost. We have worked to Canadian LEED standards, but have also implemented LABS21 standards, designed specifically to accommodate the energy requirements of the lab setting.

SUPPORTING CANADA’S KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY Recently, there has been an increase in awareness of the importance of science and technology to Canada’s economic prosperity. There is a desire to put Canada, and our research centres, on the map. The challenge for investigators, is that much of Canada’s research infrastructure is aging and in need of upgrades to meet the needs of modern science. Architecture49 has worked on a number of retrofits of existing laboratories to fit new programs and initiatives. By creating compelling work environments, Architecture49 is helping Canada attract and retain the best and brightest minds in today’s scientific field.

MAPPING THE FUTURE Certification and compliance are important components to a successful science project. Our team has developed project work that complies with the most restrictive Canadian and international standards. We do this by structuring our understanding of the regulatory requirements at the beginning of the project, and then moving forward toward a designed and built solution.
