and in the opportunity to shape urban infrastructure to Canadian principles of honesty, diversity, practicality and regionalism. With offices from coast to coast across Canada, Architecture49 boasts a history spanning over half a century of profoundly significant contributions. Our collective of regional offices and our array of specializations and experiences will continue to be in harmony with the Canadian landscape.

Manitoba Hydro Place, Winnipeg, MB (with KPMB Architects)

From St. John’s to Vancouver, we navigate urban and rural contexts. Some cities enjoy a wealth of heritage properties, and benefit from a mindful approach to blending contemporary glass with two-hundred-year-old stonework. Other regions experience unique weather—high winds, frequent storms, or low winter temperatures— and require local expertise to craft gathering places built to withstand those conditions with longevity and relevance.

Whether it’s the heart of old Quebec, or the vast prairies of Manitoba, our work celebrates the cultural and geographic mosaic of Canada. We endeavour to define the essence of a project not only to meet client needs, but to design with a vocabulary that will enrich that region and provide a meaningful sense of place for years to come.

We are committed to bringing our experience and best practice to all the work we do - big or small, complex or straightforward, local or national. We are focused on six key areas of expertise.

National Sectors Healthcare Hospitality Science & Technology Security & Defence Sports & Entertainment Transportation

The demands of an increasingly competitive landscape compelled us to structure an organization that addresses our clients’ needs for design excellence, depth of expertise and local relationships. The formal joining together of our six legacy firms provides us the base from which to focus on national centres of expertise yet still remain actively engaged in the communities that matter to us.

SECTOR

Healthcare Our Healthcare practice is a leader in the planning, design and delivery of diagnostic treatment and critical care environments for the Canadian healthcare sector. DENNIS RAMSAY National Sector Leader

Great healthcare environments are based first and foremost on the comfort and well-being of the patients and their families. However, they also must address the needs of the researchers, clinicians and staff that support the goals of the institution. These environments, whether outpatient facilities, acute care hospitals, clinical research or long term care facilities, must be universally welcoming and therapeutic; culturally and demographically appropriate. They must integrate the natural environment, facilitate collaboration, and provide a sense of human scale that reinforces comfort and reduces stress.

SECTOR

Hospitality Our hospitality practice is a Canadian leader in the integrated design and delivery of high profile urban and resort hotels and conference centres for owners, developers, and franchisees. ROBERT LAPIERRE National Sector Leader

To emphasize quality is to emphasize the best of the human experience. From the distinguished to the theatrical, attention to detail in hospitality design is about the richness of the guest experience—and the architectural elements that host that experience. In designing hotels, convention centres, casinos, recreational and health and spa spaces, we design shape and form that inspires. Architecture49 has over 30 years experience working with the hospitality industry. From feasibility studies, programming, and conceptual design to detailed construction guidance, our hospitality practice group understands the imagination and reward of wellmade guest experiences, and have helped to stage those experiences across Canada, the United States, China, the Middle East, Pacific Asia and the Caribbean.

Science & Technology Our Science and Technology practice is a world leader in the planning, design and engineering of specialty laboratories including containment, research, and diagnostic facilities for government and academia. KEVIN HUMENIUK National Sector Leader

Science is becoming increasingly collaborative and interdisciplinary and, as such, we understand that there is no single approach to laboratory design. Each of our clients has a unique set of scientific goals, and we help them articulate these aspirations in the development of a functional modern laboratory setting. In recent years there has been a movement towards laboratory design that respects human usage patterns, and the resulting need for flexibility within the laboratory and support environments. We design spaces that allow for collaboration between investigators within and outside a given discipline or research area, fueling scientific achievement.

SECTOR

Sports & Entertainment Our Sports and Entertainment practice is a North American leader in the planning, design and delivery of midsize, multi-use spectator and recreation facilities for public, private and academic clients. ALBERT PAQUETTE National Sector Leader

A well-designed recreation facility has the potential to be the heart of a community. Our innovative designs create spaces that accommodate not only arenas or swimming pools, but provide opportunities for the vital social interaction that foster civic pride and improve economic development. In the past ten years there has been an evolution in the ways in which we use recreational facilities. The new buildings generation must provide spaces that allow users to maximize the time they spend in the facility creating a hub where generations come together in space that is welcoming and engaging.

A multi-use spectator building is a complex and dynamic venue which, when successful, accommodates a wide range of events and functions, through appropriately designed facilities and well integrated amenity spaces. The more types of events a building can accommodate, the more it will be supported by the community and in turn the more viable the economic model becomes. These diverse requirements drive a comprehensive pre-design analysis that considers not only physical infrastructure but financial metrics – from the number of washrooms required, the points of sales per capita for food and beverage vending, to the potential revenue per seat based on the size and type of venue.

of infrastructure and flow to make communities more vibrant. Effective transportation has the potential to increase the sustainability – and livability – of a community. More than just thoroughfares, these spaces represent a welcoming place for citizens, an investment for governments, and a gateway to opportunity for business.

Canada Line Rapid Transit System, Bridgeport Elevated Station, Vancouver, BC

Transportation routes and networks have shaped the civilized world. Town and cities have been built around ports and rail stations. The cars and the roads they use have impacted much of the built environment of North America. Our awareness of this impact, and the responsibility to create transportation systems that serve not only the needs, but also the vision of the future world, is what drives our team.

At A49, we believe that architecture serves a broader purpose as a social influencer, often in very regionally distinct ways. Economic conditions, climate, terrain, and the cultural makeup of an urban or rural setting varies significantly as one moves across Canada and further abroad. We have made a conscious decision to stay firmly engaged in our local communities and are committed to bringing the best solutions to our clients no matter what the location. This approach allows us to continue to develop the expertise required to design the best environments to support our clients’ objectives. Working in partnership with a broad team, our clients benefit from a nationally informed perspective that is delivered in a regionally responsive manner.
