CASE STUDY BRIEF The case study house must address both the concerns of the past and those that have now become present due to the pandemic. Covid-19 is causing us to reevaluate what it means to design domestic space, as it has been a wake up call reminding us of the value of homelife. Now more than ever, the health and wellbeing of the occupants will play a big part in the ways we address designing the home. It is time that we as designers reinvestigate the needs of people and the factors that make a home. Houses have always been built with family living in mind, but the pandemic is showing that designers should prioritize making adaptable spaces in order to both work in private and spend time with friends and family. An ideal home should reflect the way people live their lives, so the emphasis must be on daily life. People are working at home more than ever before so it is necessary to design homes around the needs of having private working spaces, but also open spaces for gatherings.

The renovated case study house will take these changes into account and adapt the home into better livable working spaces.

Additionally, there has been a greater concern for the environment in these past years that the next case study houses must take into account. For instance, we should be using more environmentally friendly building materials when constructing homes and look at material properties such as biodegradability, carbon costs, mass timber, and prefabricated parts. In this way we can show concern for the nature surrounding homes and throughout the world. These new homes should also take extra caution to include green space and monitor air quality. Overall, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and greater environmental concerns we must readdress the case study house’s designs to meet the current needs.
