CHANGING HATS
PROJECT BY CHAD HAYDENThe hat represents authority and power. Because it covers the head, the hat contains thought; therefore, if it is changed, an opinion is changed.
Changing Hats seeks to offer a new solution to an increasingly bleak housing situation for the next generation of homeowners. Finding solace in ideas around collective living reframed to suit a hyper individualist American mindset. This is done by offering a plinth with collective spaces for eating and living which holds up and supports individualist bedchamber volumes above. Simple geometric volumes (hats) reflect the personality and hobbies of the inhabitant within. If the user changes the hat changes or if the hat fits wear it.
RESPONSE 01. The house was designed specifically for three brothers who each have their own personality types and hobbies. Collectively they need spaces to come together, a space for chance encounters, while also requiring individual making spaces to isolate and focus on their own personal desires.
RESPONSE 02. Mattrix drawing (above) shows the three brother’s bedchambers, one desinged as a factory for making art, one as a machine for growing plants, and the last as a tool for training. Mattrix drawing (below) displays different plinth options for the collective space.
